VERO BEACH — When Alana Hockenhull arrived late to a game against Tallahassee-Chiles, she saw the Vero Beach High School girls soccer team already had a lead and commented to coach Jose Gibert: “Oh my goodness ... you don’t need me.” Gibert knew the impact the sophomore striker had on her team, though, and told her to go in and “make a difference.” She quickly assisted a goal and scored the first of four goals moments later to help the Indians to a 10-2 win. Hockenhull always came through in the clutch this season, scoring a school-record 48 goals, including nine game-winners, and 14 assists. For her contributions to Vero Beach’s perfect regular-season, 21-1 record and regional finalist finish, Hockenhull joins South Fork converted sweeper Laurie Scott as the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Girls Soccer Co-Players of the Year. “I tried to push myself every game to get better and make a difference,” Hockenhull said.

TROPICAL FARMS — For South Fork High School senior Laurie Scott, the soccer season always was about helping her team and representing her school the best she could. To do that, Scott decided to sacrifice a chance to add more goals to her resume. She switched from striker to sweeper to help bolster a defense that had lost most of its starters. As a result, regional semifinalist South Fork (18-2-1) allowed just 0.57 goals a game. Not only was she the “glue to the defense,” according to coach Tony Iannitti, but she also brought value to the team’s offense. In tight games, Scott moved up and often came through with a clutch goal or two, finishing with 12 goals. For her contributions, Scott joins Vero Beach’s recordsetting goal scorer, Alana Hockenhull, as the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers AllArea Girls Soccer Co-Players of the Year. “This season definitely was
Vero Beach sophomore forward Stats: 48 goals, 14 assists, nine game-winning goals Coach Jose Gibert: “Alana is a true finisher. She has outstanding breakaway speed, makes creative runs and finds the back of the net with her right or left foot. She continues to exceed my expectations with another phenomenal recordsetting year.”
Hockenhull, Player of the Year last season, had a school-record 45 goals as a freshman. This season, she wanted to break her own record, calling it something “extra to strive for” beyond team success. She broke it with a hat trick in a 4-3 loss to East Lake in the Region 2-5A championship. “(The record) helped me stay motivated to keep improving,” Hockenhull said. “I guess next year I’ll have to try to break it again.”

JOSE GIBERT
Vero Beach, seventh season This year: Guided the Indians to a regional final and 21-1 finish, including a perfect regular season with wins over eight 2012 district champions; Vero Beach’s 19-player roster included 11 freshmen; the Indians finished 10th nationally in the elitesoccerreport. com rankings Coach’s quote: “I never expected to have a perfect season. I scheduled some very worthy opponents (such as) West Boca, Viera, Merritt Island, Spruce Creek — all teams that reached FHSAA state regional finals in some very tough brackets. I never step on the field expecting to lose, but I honestly did not expect to win them all.”
LAURIE SCOTT
South Fork senior sweeper Stats: 12 goals, 2 assists; anchored defense that allowed 0.57 goals per game with 12 shutouts Coach Tony Iannitti: “When you take a player of that caliber, who scores 24-25 goals a year, and then she steps into a position when you ask her and she comes to you and says ‘I can do this,’ it’s a selfless leadership you don’t see in a lot of athletes.”
one of my biggest accomplishments,” Scott said. “I relied on my teammates a lot, but I think me moving back there made them more confident and that allowed us to go far. “We all worked well together a nd had great communication.” The two goals Scott remembers best is a game-winner against Jupiter and one that sent South Fork to overtime in an eventual regional quarterfinal win over Viera.
