MONICA POOL
Jensen Beach, fifth year This season: Pool guided the boys to a dominating win in the District 15-3A championship to earn the second district title in school history after putting together a 14-1 record in the regular season. The lone loss was to undefeated Morningside. Jensen Beach won its first regional match, but lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Belen Jesuit in the regional championship to end the season 15-2 overall. Quotable: “Our boys are young and we’re very proud of how they competed. To watch them grow and to see the light in their eyes, ‘OK, there’s next year, we’re not done yet,’ also sets a tone and focus for the program. … They started setting goals as a team for the future and that’s how you develop into a program that is competing at the state level.”
MARCELLO BALDERRAMA
Morningside junior Notable: Balderrama went 11-0 in singles play, including a 9-0 mark at No. 3 singles and a win each at No. 1 and No. 2. He compiled a 10-0 mark in doubles play, mostly at No. 2.

John Carroll junior Notable: Blair came back from illness to put together a 10-1 record at No. 1 singles, winning the District 11-1A title to earn a trip to the state tournament. Blair won his opening round match before bowing out in the semifinals of the state individual tournament.

Elio Livi was so dominant on the tennis court this spring that he didn’t lose a game until his sixth match of the year. The Morningside Academy junior went on to finish with a 10-0 record at No. 1 singles and 9-0 at No. 1 doubles, anchoring the team, which finished undefeated in its first year of play. Livi, who lives at Club Med and trains with its tennis academy, ended up only losing 11 games the entire season. The closest any opponent came to taking a set from Livi was near the end of the regular season when he beat Chris Suchoski of Holy Trinity Episcopal 6-4, 6-1. That is the most points Livi allowed to any one opponent. Although Livi didn’t get to test his ability in the postseason because the FHSAA ruled the team ineligible, his success cannot be ignored. Livi has been named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Boys Tennis Player of the Year. “I was very pleased with the season, but I wasn’t pleased with how the season ended,” Livi said. “I was very pleased with how we all performed. “(The FHSAA ruling) was
ELIO LIVI
Morningside junior Notable: Livi went 10-0 at No.1 singles and 9-0 at No. 2 doubles to lead Morningside to its undefeated season. Livi, who last played scholastic tennis as an eighthgrader at Plantation-American Heritage, was not extended to three sets in any match. Coach Paul Humburg: “I don’t think he lost more than two games in any one match. He was very consistent. He had a good all-around game. He has a good serve, his composure is excellent, but what I loved the most is that he’s a tremendous sportsman. He was very gracious in victory. I stressed that with the whole team this year, knowing we’d have a real good team. He and the rest of kids represented our school very well.”
heartbreaking. We were expecting to go all the way to district, regional, state. Like I said, playing with the team was a lot of fun. To have it end like that was very disappointing for sure.” Livi, who plays tournaments all around the world, moved to Club

Med to focus on advanced tennis. He began attending Morningside as a sophomore. He previously played scholastic tennis at PlantationAmerican Heritage, earning a spot on the varsity in the seventh and eighth grades. “With the intensity and training of the Club Med program, I kind of lost track of school,” he said. “My grades started going down. That wasn’t too pleasing to my parents. “So, I went back to school. That’s when I decided to play high school tennis. I did it more for fun than anything because all my friends were going to be on the team, so we all could have fun … High school tennis is a lot different. In the junior tournaments, it’s all about the individual. But playing for the team, you’re rooting for each other. You have each other’s back. It’s always fun and it’s like having a little support group while you play.” Livi proved his game is sound and, now, so are his grades. “He’s a great, all-around team player and he’s also on the A honor roll,” coach Paul Humburg said. “He has scored well on his college entrance exams. He has some good universities looking at him. He’s very pleasant, respectful. We could not be prouder of him. He’s a nice kid.”
