PORT ST. LUCIE — Treasure Coast High School sprinter Justin Williams was determined to do two things this season — improve his takeoff in the 100meter dash and stay healthy. He was able to do both. Williams, a senior, won the 100 and 200 at the District 8-4A meet, finished second in Region 2-4A in the 100 and was able to run in the state meet for the first time in his three-year career. Williams is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. “This was an important year for me,” Williams said. “I always got hurt at regionals before. I was stretching way more than I ever did before, and it was good to actually make it to states. Even though it didn’t go the way I wanted it to, just to make it was a good thing for me.” A 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, Williams was dominant in both the 100 and 200 meters. Until the regional meet, Williams went undefeated in the 200 — which he considers his stronger race — and lost only once during the regular season in the 100. “He is a real rare find,” Treasure Coast coach Anthony Prince said. “Here’s a kid who comes along and in three years of high school, he really only lost once (during regular season meets). It’s really just phenomenal. We limited him to what he was running and we had him do some extra jumping events to keep

his body healthy. “He just put in more time. We spent less time worrying about how he finishes — because he finishes so strong — and focused on his start time and what he needed to fix.” The biggest concern for Williams was the first 20 yards of the 100. He worked hard at being able to power quickly out of the starting blocks and get in front quickly. In the 200, Williams was able to catch up to anyone who got in front of him. “In the 100, the takeoff is everything,” Williams said. “The key to a good takeoff is listening to the gun, timing and exploding. Some of it is just the aggressiveness that comes

Treasure Coast, third year This season: Treasure Coast struggled during Prince’s first two seasons, but had a breakout season in 2013. Treasure Coast won its first St. Lucie County Championship as well as the Fort Pierce Cobra Relays and the John Carroll/Fort Pierce Central Invitational. The Titans finished second in District 8-4A and 12th in Region 2-4A. Treasure Coast was the lone area team to have athletes qualify for the Class 4A state meet. Quotable: “This year, we had an extremely good, young group of kids. They followed the leadership with Justin Williams and Chris McAllister and Diqwon Harris. They came to practice every day and the young kids bought in to working hard. They spent more time in the weight room and on the track than previous years.”

out of you. I had a lot of power on my first step. Before, I didn’t get a full extended step and I didn’t explode. This year, I had a lot more power.” Williams signed with Michigan State as a defensive back and also hopes to compete in both indoor and outdoor track for the Spartans.
