Katy Pridemore began playing lacrosse in Georgia when she was 12 years old, but her game reached a new level during the two-plus years she spent in Maryland, competing against the best in a lacrosse hotbed. This year, the Vero Beach High School junior midfielder shined like never before. During her second season with the Fighting Indians, Pridemore guided the team to an eighth straight state championship win, scoring 92 goals, 29 assists and playing her best against top competition. Pridemore, a two-time first-team All-American who also led the team in ground balls, is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Player of the Year. “Anytime you play Vero Beach High School, you know you have to key in on her,” Vero Beach coach Shannon Dean said. “She was guarded by the other teams’ best defender all the time, no matter where she was on the field. To put up the numbers and lead this team like she did, while being keyed on by other teams, says a lot about her talent level. “If she’s not in the game, you see a big difference.” A natural lacrosse talent seems to run in Pridemore’s family. Pridemore’s older brother, Ben, is headed to Notre Dame for lacrosse after finishing his career at Boys’ Latin, a boarding school in Maryland that spent most of the season as the unanimous No. 1 team in the Nike/U.S. Lacrosse Top 25. Her sister, Hannah, is a sophomore starter at Vero Beach; younger brother Ross played varsity at St. Edward’s as a seventh-grader; and fifth-grader Lydia also is a likely future player at Vero Beach as well. “Neither of my parents played, but we got into it when we lived

Vero Beach, 11th year This season: Guided Vero Beach to a 20-4 finish and eighth straight state championship victory. The Fighting Indians went 3-4 against tough out-of-state competition with a marquee win over No. 3 St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), and they extended their in-state win streak to 111 games by going 17-0 against Florida competition this year. The Indians finished No. 13 in the Nike/ U.S. Lacrosse Top 25 and No. 2 in the South Region. Dean is 224-23-1 during his tenure at Vero Beach. Quotable: “This season, with the schedule we created, was very challenging to me as a coach. It is great to be a part of a program with high expectations year in and year out. We knew we had the ability to compete with the top teams in the nation, but sometimes the ball doesn’t roll your way. That’s what made it fun and challenging. Even though we had some peaks and valleys, it all came together for St. Anthony’s and that was a springboard for our postseason.”

Vero Beach junior midfielder Statistics: 92 goals, 29 assists, 39 draw controls, 35 ground balls Coach Shannon Dean: “Katy is a game-changer. She has power, she’s aggressive, and she can make things happen on the field. Katy is such a dominant player in all aspects of the game — draws, offense or defense. She is our best ground-baller. She’s unbelievable. Players like that don’t come around too often.”

in Georgia, after my older brother started to play,” Pridemore said. “He had played two or three years before I picked up a stick (at age 12). I used to be a year-round swimmer, but I decided to try and it stuck.” Pridemore had only been playing a couple years when she moved to Maryland, but she credited that experience for helping her grow as a player. After spending her freshman year at Notre Dame Prep in Baltimore — but missing the season with an injury — she and her family moved to Vero Beach in December 2011, a month before she committed to the University of Florida. “It (the level of play in Maryland) was a shock at first, but after a while, I loved it,” Pridemore said. “The competition was awesome. It made me want to get better because there were so many good high school players, and I wanted to be like that. I just practiced all the time and kept working at it. All my best friends I met through lacrosse, so we would go play on the weekends and after school — it was a lot of fun. “It definitely helped me improve because you get better playing with better competition.” Pridemore’s top efforts came in Vero Beach’s biggest games. Among the highlights was an eight-goal,

three-ground ball effort in an upset win over then No. 3 St. Anthony’s (N.Y.). She also scored six goals in outof-state games against Archbishop Carroll (Pa.), No. 5 Georgetown Visitation (D.C.) and No. 11 Milton (Ga.). Vero Beach finished No. 13 nationally. “We played a tough schedule this year and we hung in there against all of them, but couldn’t finish some of those teams off,” Pridemore said. “It just motivates us to show everyone next year we can beat them.”
