ST. LUCIE WEST CENTENNIAL EAGLES
FRIDAY NIGHT MEMORIES
2003
10-2

including a 77-6 win over Palm Beach Central. Playmakers: Centennial had a 1,000-yard backfield tandem in Jarvis Drayton (1,430, 16 touchdowns) and Greg Shinego (1,213, 13 TDs). Quarterback Frank Liscio passed for 792 yards and 10 TDs. Kyle Langford caught 25
passes for 461 yards and six TDs. Jamaal Deveaux averaged 10.7 tackles and Jamar Chaney and Colt McDonough averaged 10 apiece. Chaney had 22 tackles for loss, McDonough 19. The defense allowed 74.8 rushing yards per game.

SIZE ON THE LINES/ LINEBACKERS
7:30
Centennial has size on both sides of the line of scrimmage and having a pair of Division I prospects — Jaynard Bostwick and Western Kentucky commit Justin Martinez — certainly helps. The Eagles also return most of their linebackers from last season, allowing them to easily switch between threeman and four-man fronts. Fullback Jonathan Poma (646 yards, eight touchdowns) graduated, but Greg Green, A.J. Villareal and Rashawn Palmer should prove to be capable replacements for the running game.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH
HOBIE HILER/SPECIAL TO TREASURE COAST NEWSPAPERS
Offensive tackle Justin Martinez (center), along with Jaynard Bostwick, Rashawn Palmer and A.J. Villareal give Centennial a power running game the coaches can use to play smash-mouth football.
I like toughness. I like guys who aren’t afraid. I want to shorten the game and be physical.” Ron Parker, St. Lucie West Centennial head coach
Eagles’ biggest asset is their physical strength Special to Treasure Coast Newspapers
PORT ST. LUCIE — St. Lucie West Centennial football coach Ron Parker isn’t trying to surprise anybody. The third-year coach doesn’t get caught up in the newest offensive strategy or formation, and he certainly doesn’t want to reinvent the wheel. What notion has excited him during fall camp? The idea of lining up 296-pound tackle Jaynard Bostwick and 275-pound tackle Justin Martinez on the same side and handing the ball off to 205-pound running back Rashawn Palmer, with 215-pound fullback A.J. Villareal blocking in front of him. “I like toughness,” Parker said. “I like guys who aren’t afraid. I want to shorten the game and be physical. “Be physical, control the line of scrimmage, don’t turn the ball over, play very good defense. That’s what we want to hang our hat on.” That game plan worked well last year as Centennial won its first district title since 2003, so don’t expect the Eagles to get complacent now that they’ve had some success. “Last year is last year,” Parker
JAYNARD BOSTWICK
said. “The saying goes, ‘If you thought you did something yesterday, you haven’t done anything today.’ That’s our mantra here. You have to try to get better every day. Last year was great, but we’re not going to sneak up on people anymore. And that’s a feather in our cap, that hopefully we’re for real.” The strengths of the 2012 team are the offensive and defensive lines, led by Bostwick and Martinez. Bostwick, rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, is one of the top defensive tackles in the nation and has scholarship offers from every SEC school, as well as Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. He is the first defender to play varsity all four years at Centennial since current Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jamar Chaney. Because Bostwick commands so much attention from opposing offenses, he doesn’t have gaudy statistics (74 tackles, two sacks in 2011), but still is a game-changer. “Sometimes you get great defensive players that can really affect what you want to do,” Port St. Lucie coach Hilary Poole said. “Jaynard Bostwick, he is a monster. His stats didn’t say he had a big game against us, but if you look at the game film, yes he did — absolutely. He messed up our
Senior defensive lineman 2011 stats: 74 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery Coach Parker: “He has so much physical strength and relentless effort. (College coaches say) he could play right now. He’s very respectful.”
game plan. “He definitely is one of the best. You don’t have stats for a kid’s getoff or placing his hands perfectly, but he does.” Parker has maintained that no one player is more important than the team, but Bostwick’s presence will create opportunities for the Eagles’ other defenders — especially along the defensive line. “They’re going to run away from him, so we’re going to have to be smart,” Parker said. “We’re going to line him up on every offensive lineman, so they’re going to have to block him. If he plays at end, they can run away. If he plays inside, they can run outside. Whoever’s playing opposite him should take full advantage of that.” While the defensive line is a strength, the secondary is a concern. Safeties Ty Jackson and Dustin Saxon, both three-year starters, graduated, while cornerback Edwin Thomas now is at John Carroll. “I want the guys in the secondary to be aggressive, make plays and not get beat deep,” Parker said. “Hopefully, the safeties won’t make a lot of tackles. “Usually, they do, but hopefully they don’t have to with this defense.”
JUSTIN MARTINEZ
Senior offensive tackle 2011 stats: N/A Coach Parker: “Justin is maturing to be a dominating offensive lineman. He can play tackle, center and a little bit on the defensive line for us.”
KEY GAME OCT. 5: AT TREASURE COAST
Putting it on the line
By Jon Santucci
The skill positions on offense and defense are question marks, if for no other reason than because the players are unproven. Drevion Johns and Tyler Leo will play cornerback, while Ricky Rodriguez most likely will be Centennial’s top receiving threat. Quarterback Kevin Lowe started in the spring, but did not throw a pass last season. Centennial will not ask Lowe to win games with his arm, but rather be an effective manager of a power ground game that could be potent — just like it was in 2011.
The Eagles’ first District 8-8A game is critical. Wins over rival Treasure Coast and Centennial would essentially guarantee their second consecutive playoff appearance. Treasure Coast took a 14-0 lead in last year’s game before Centennial came roaring back. Centennial had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed a field goal in the final minute. Jonathan Poma scored from 10 yards out on Centennial’s first offensive play in overtime for a 20-14 win.
PREDICTION 5-4, 1-1 DISTRICT 8-8A
Centennial’s goal is to win at least one more game than it did in 2011 (five) and go one step further in the playoffs (the Eagles lost in the regional quarterfinals). Road games at Merritt Island and Melbourne won’t be easy and the District 8-8A games will be battles. The final three games — Vero Beach, Fort Pierce Central and Port St. Lucie — all will be emotionally charged, rivalry games.
DEVIN CLEMENTS
Senior Kicker 2011 stats: 5-for-10 field goal attempts, 35 points Coach Parker: “He takes care of all the kicking game for us. He hit the (game-winning) field goal against Vero last year.”
