COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION DR. NANCY B. MOODY

PRESIDENT 2ND YEAR • EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY, 1972 Dr. Nancy B. Moody is the 27th President of Tusculum College, Tennessee’s oldest College and is the first female president. She officially assumed the role on April 27, 2009. “Dr. Moody is a strong advocate of our civic arts curriculum and is well-known and respected in our region. We feel fortunate to have a�racted someone of her caliber, and we are truly op�mis�c about the future of Tusculum College under her leadership,” said Ken Bowman, chairman of the Tusculum College Board of Trustees and of the selec�on commi�ee. “Dr. Moody is a proven, successful college president with an especially impressive record of preparing students to be ac�ve ci�zens and successful in the careers they choose.” Bowman added that Dr. Moody has demonstrated a commitment to Tusculum College’s mission of providing a strong civic arts curriculum for all graduates and to con�nuing to grow the College in that tradi�on for both residen�al and Graduate and Professional Studies students. Dr. Moody was previously President of South Atlan�c Conference member Lincoln Memorial University since 2002. “I am excited to have the opportunity to serve Tusculum College. I am extremely impressed with the people of Tusculum College - the students, faculty, staff, administra�ve personnel and members of the Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Moody. “Without excep�on, there is a sense of enthusiasm and pride for the mission of the College, which has a wonderful legacy as the oldest ins�tu�on of higher educa�on in the state of Tennessee.” She added, “As a first-genera�on college graduate, I have always valued all levels of educa�on with a par�cular interest in the higher educa�on of tradi�onal aged college students and adults of all ages. Achieving the knowledge and skills necessary to func�on in society through a college educa�on is one of the best ways to s�mulate the local economy and posi�vely impact local communi�es and the lives of others. Dr. Moody received associate and baccalaureate degrees in nursing from Eastern Kentucky University, a master’s of science in nursing from Texas Woman’s University and a doctorate of science in nursing from the University of Alabama’s School of Nursing at Birmingham. Her professional career in higher educa�on began at LMU as an instructor of nursing. She subsequently served in several roles at LMU, culmina�ng in her appointment as the dean of LMU’s School of Professional Studies before joining the faculty at East Tennessee State University where she was tenured and served as department chair. She would go on to become an associate professor at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, while also serving as the execu�ve director of the Tennessee Center of Nursing. Dr. Moody currently chairs the execu�ve commi�ee for the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universi�es Associa�on and serves on the Tennessee Student Assistance Corpora�on Board of Directors. She is a member of the NCAA Division II President’s Council and an ac�ve par�cipant on the boards of the Appalachian Colleges Associa�on and the Tennessee Center for Nursing, Inc. She is married to Tom Moody, a self-employed public accountant in Knoxville. She and Tom are proud parents of grown children, daughter, Mykel, and son, Adam.

FRANKIE DEBUSK

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS 4TH YEAR • FURMAN UNIVERSITY, 1991 Frankie DeBusk is entering his fourth year as athle�c director at Tusculum College. He was named interim director of athle�cs in August, 2007 and was promoted to the full-�me post later that year. DeBusk is also beginning his 13th season at the helm of the Pioneer football program. DeBusk oversees the day-to-day opera�ons of the Tusculum athle�c department and the 14 sports that the College sponsors. In his first three years at the helm of the Pioneer Athle�c Department, DeBusk has guided Tusculum to outstanding seasons. In the last three years, TC has captured nine South Atlan�c Conference championships, five SAC Tournament �tles and 14 NCAA Division II postseason appearances. Tusculum has finished fourth or be�er for the Doug Echols SAC Athle�c Excellence Award, including second in his first two years as athle�c director. With its outstanding na�onal postseason success during the 2008-09 campaign, Tusculum was the top league school in the NACDA Director’s Cup, finishing 58th of 272 Division II programs in the country. Tusculum student-athletes and coaches have garnered numerous individual accomplishments during DeBusk’s brief watch. In the last three years, 122 student-athletes have earned All-South Atlan�c Conference honors, including 55 AllRegion picks and 24 All-Americans. Twelve (12) have been selected as SAC Players of the Year, including four as Region Players of the Year. Three have also garnered Conference Freshman of the Year accolades. DeBusk has also stressed academic excellence in the department, resul�ng in 272 SAC Commissioner Honor Roll recipients over the last three years, including and a school record 26 named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team. Thirteen (13) Pioneers have earned the pres�gious South Atlan�c Conference Scholar Athlete Award for their respec�ve sports, including six ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans®, including Dus�n Morrow (baseball - 2008), Nicole Ferris (women’s soccer - 2008), Jarrell NeSmith (football - 2008, 2009), Simon Holzapfel (men’s cross country - 2008) and Chase Carroll (men’s golf 2009). Three TC head coaches were either named Conference or Region Coach of the Year during the 2007-08 season. Tommy Arne� (men’s tennis) and Bre� Teach (men’s soccer) were named SAC Coaches of the Year, while Missy Tiber was selected as the Region Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associa�on (WBCA). DeBusk has overseen numerous athle�c facility enhancements during his tenure as both football coach and athle�c director at Tusculum. In 2007-08, championship banners were installed in Pioneer Arena, honoring the success of Tusculum athle�cs, both past and present. The Pioneer Arena playing surface was redesigned and refinished during the summer of 2008, while historic Rankin Hall, which houses the TC athle�c department, experienced renova�ons to its main lobby area. The Pioneer football locker room also experience a major renova�on with the installa�on of new lockers and floor. DeBusk, the winningest football coach in Tusculum history, has built the Pioneers into year in and year out contenders in NCAA II, resul�ng in seven winning seasons in the last nine years. Over the past 10 seasons, TC has posted a 64-44 mark including a 9-4 tally sheet in 2008, while claiming the program’s second South Atlan�c Conference Championship and earning the school’s first berth to the NCAA II Football Playoffs. For his efforts, he was named Conference and AFCA Region Coach of the Year. His 71 victories on the Pioneer sidelines makes DeBusk the winningest gridrion coach in Tusculum history. His victory tally is the fourth most in SAC history, while his 37 league wins are the seventh most in the conference record book. In 2008, DeBusk’s team achieved success both on and off the field. The nine wins �ed a school single-season record, including victories in four of its last five games. DeBusk, a 1991 Furman University graduate, established 11 school records at quarterback for the Paladins, while compiling an impressive 31-6 record. In 1988, DeBusk led Furman to a 13-2 mark while capturing the NCAA Division I-AA Na�onal Championship. His collegiate career also included three Southern Conference �tles and three trips to the NCAA I-AA playoffs. He is not the first member of the DeBusk family to garner the TC black and orange. His brother, Doug, was a Tusculum Hall of Fame point guard for the Pioneer basketball team from 1991-95. In 2003, DeBusk was the recipient of the pres�gious Art Argauer Award, which is presented to the Tusculum coach of the year as selected by his peers. He was the co-recipient of the Argauer Award again in the 2008-09 year. Frankie DeBusk is married to the former Jennifer Coffey of Bristol, Tenn. and they have one son, Ty.


HEAD COACH MICHAEL ROBINSON Michael Robinson is entering his third season at the helm of the Tusculum College volleyball program. Robinson took over the program in spring of 2008, becoming the seventh head coach in the history of volleyball at Tennessee’s oldest college. Robinson’s first year was a successful one as the Pioneers posted a 22-11 record, while earning the program its first NCAA Division II regional ranking. He mentored one All-South Atlan�c Conference performer (Ka�e Luebke), while two of his rookies were selected to the SAC All-Freshman Team (Carly Swisher, Peyton Colclough). In his inaugural season as head coach, the Pioneers opened winning six of their first eight matches, including Robinson’s first-ever collegiate victory against Belmont Abbey College on Aug. 30, 2008. He led TC to a seven-match winning streak as the squad finished fourth in the conference. He posted his second straight winning season for the Pioneers in 2009 with an 18-15 record as he guided Tusculum to the program’s first-ever NCAA II Tournament appearance. He mentored All-SAC honoree Gina Coffaro and SAC All-Freshman standouts Sam Underwood and Bailee Price. His 40-26 record gives him a .606 winning percentage, which is the fi�h-best in school history. Prior to assuming the head coaching du�es, Robinson served the previous three years as an assistant at Tusculum. From 2006-07, Robinson helped the program to a 48-20 record, including a 20-8 mark in the South Atlan�c Conference. In 2006, TC posted a 23-10 showing, a 14-win improvement from the previous season. TC also went 9-5 in SAC play to finish fourth in the league. But it was in 2007 that the Pioneers showed the most improvement going 25-10, while establishing a new school record for SAC wins in a season (11). Tusculum went 11-3 in league play, while finishing second in the conference, its best ever finish since joining the SAC in 1998. TC ranked second in the na�on in blocks per game and ninth in team hi�ng percentage. That squad boasted the 2007 SAC Player of the Year in Vivian Lacy, who became the first Tusculum volleyball player to garner NCAA Division II All-America dis�nc�on. Lacy was named the SAC Player of the Year, while Alexis Rowles was tabbed the SAC Scholar Athlete for volleyball. On the 2007 squad alone, four players earned All-SAC recogni�on, including: Lacy, Kelsey Hayden, Ka�e Luebke and Mariana Rezende. While at Tusculum, Robinson’s teams have excelled off the volleyball court, earning the American Volleyball Coaches Associa�on Team Academic Award. Robinson, a na�ve of Green Mountain, N.C., came to the Greeneville campus a�er serving as head volleyball coach at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, N.C. in 2004. Prior to 2004, Robinson coached six years at South Atlan�c Conference member Mars Hill College. He served as a student assistant with the Lady Lions from 1998-2000 and as an assistant coach from 2001-03. During his tenure, Mars Hill boasted six AllConference honorees, including 1998 SAC Player of the Year Nicole Silver and 2001 SAC Freshman of the Year Sarah Nash. While at Mars Hill, he assisted with all opera�ons of the volleyball program, including scou�ng, filming, weight training, condi�oning and prac�ce coordina�on. The 1998 MHC squad posted a 32-6 overall record while capturing the South Atlan�c Conference championship and the SAC Tournament �tle. The team �ed for fi�h in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, while Silver led the na�on in digs, averaging six per game. Robinson is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Associa�on and is ac�ve within the organiza�on, serving on the AVCA Assistant Coaches Commi�ee.

COACHING STAFF ABBI BLACKBURN

ASSISTANT COACH 3RD YEAR • UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA, 2007 Abbi Blackburn is beginning her third season as the assistant volleyball coach at Tusculum College. Coach Blackburn assists in all aspects of the program, including prac�ce planning, recrui�ng, travel coordina�on and game management. In her first year on the Tusculum sideline, Blackburn helped guide the Pioneers to a 22-11 record and a fourth place finish in the South Atlan�c Conference. The Pioneers posted a strong mid-season run to earn the program its first NCAA Division II regional ranking. In 2009, Tusculum posted an 18-15 campaign, which the Pioneers parlayed into the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. Blackburn, a na�ve of New Castle, Ind., played her collegiate volleyball at the University of Alabama from 2003-06. During her career, the Crimson Tide posted a 79-46 record, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2005, 2006). In her sophomore season, Alabama rolled to a 21-9 record, while capturing a share of the 2004 Southeastern Conference Western Division �tle. She played in 42 sets that year, averaging 1.17 digs per set. The following year, the Tide upped its victory total with its 2311 showing and advanced to the championship match of the SEC Tournament. She saw ac�on in 76 sets where she tallied 25 blocks and a dozen service aces. In Alabama’s win over 24th-ranked LSU, Blackburn posted a .438 hi�ng percentage and recorded four blocks. Blackburn excelled in the classroom as she was a three-�me SEC All-Academic Team selec�on (2003, 2004, 2005). Following her playing career with the Tide, she remained in the Tuscaloosa area providing private volleyball lessons and coached the Club Crimson Volleyball Team in 2007. She also served as a counselor at the Alabama Volleyball Camp and with the New Castle Volleyball Camp in Indiana. She also coached the New Castle Middle School Team in 2007. During her prep career, Blackburn earned All-State and All-North Central honors twice at Chrysler High School in Indiana, leading her squad in hi�ng percentage in all four seasons. She led CHS to the State Final Four in 2001 as the team earned a No. 4 na�onal ranking by USA Today and PrepVolleyball.com. From 1997-2003, Blackburn played for the ASICS Munciana Club Team as her squad won two na�onal champions (15-u in 2000 and 17-u in 2002). The team also placed third in 2001 (16-u). Blackburn earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communica�on from Alabama in 2007, while majoring in Adver�sing with a minor in Psychology.

DONNIE VANNOY

ASSISTANT COACH 2ND YEAR • UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, 1993 Donnie Vannoy is beginning his second season as an assistant volleyball coach at Tusculum College. His primary responsibility will be assis�ng with the facilita�on of prac�ce. The Morristown, Tenn. na�ve began his coaching career as the head coach at Morristown Hamblen West High School from 1999-2005. Vannoy led the Lady Trojans to three conference championships, two district championships and mentored two All-State selec�ons. Vannoy was named IMAC Coach of the Year 2001, 2003 and 2004. He con�nued his coaching career at Morristown Hamblen East High School from 20062008, where he help guide the Lady Canes to three conference and district championships, and three sub-state performances, including three All-State honorees. He was also selected by the Tennessee Athle�c Coaches Associa�on as the assistant coach of the 2008 East All Star Volleyball Team. Vannoy has spent the last 12 years working with Lakeway, Tennessee Elite, and Phoenix Rising Volleyball clubs located in Morristown, Knoxville, Johnson City and Kingsport. Vannoy and his wife Robin reside in Morristown with their son, Hobie (sophomore in high school) and daughter, Halie (sophomore at MTSU playing volleyball). Coach Vannoy is a 1993 graduate of the University of Tennessee.

LINDSEY BUTEYN

ASSISTANT COACH 1ST YEAR • UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA, 2009 Lindsey is entering her first season as an assistant volleyball coach at Tusculum College. It is a reunion for the Waupun, Wisc. na�ve with former college teammate and now TC assistant coach Abbi Blackburn. Buteyn and Blackburn played two seasons together at the University of Alabama. During her four-year playing career at Alabama (2005-08), Buteyn led the Crimson Tide to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007). She played in 86 career matches, including 295 sets where she averaged 1.84 kills and 0.69 blocks per set, to go along with a career .264 hi�ng percentage. Her teams never experienced a losing season as the Tide posted a combined 71-52 mark during her collegiate career. In her rookie season, Alabama posted a 23-11 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Bama rolled to to the championship match of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. She played in 73 sets that year and her .284 a�ack percentage was third best on the team. She upped her hi�ng percentage to .378 in 2006 as the Tide posted a 17-13 worksheet and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA postseason. In 2007, Buteyn recorded �me in 104 sets as he tallied 93 total blocks, good enough for second on the team. Alabama finished the season with a 15-15 mark, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament. During her senior campaign (2008), Buteyn was one of only four players on the team to play in all 105 sets (29 matches) as Alabama went 16-13. She �ed for second on the team with a .254 hi�ng percentage, while she was also second with her 59 total blocks. Buteyn also shined off the volleyball court as she was a three-�me member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll (2007, 2008, 2009), earning her undergraduate degree in Communica�ons from Alabama in 2009. A�er gradua�on, she played professional volleyball as a middle blocker with VC-Tirol in Innsbruck, Austria this past year (2009-2010). During her prep career at Waupun (Wisc.) HS, she was a two-�me All-Conference and All-State honoree. She helped guide WHS to back-to-back State Championships and led Waupun to a PrepVolleyball.com na�onal ranking (No. 8) as a junior. She was also named to the State All-Tournament Team, while also lettering in basketball and track & field, where she was a two-�me State qualifier in the 400m run.

AMY BROOKS

ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER 5TH YEAR • APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY, 2004 Amy Brooks is in her fi�h year at Tusculum serving as assistant athle�c trainer and clinical instructor. She serves as the cer�fied athle�c trainer for the sports of volleyball and women’s basketball and is as an assistant professor in Athle�c Training program. Brooks, a product of Hilton Head Island, S.C., came to Tusculum in 2006 a�er serving as a graduate assistant athle�c trainer at Troy University. While at the Troy, Ala. school, she served as the head athle�c trainer for the Trojans rodeo team as well as its cheerleading squad. She also assisted with the athle�c training needs for women’s soccer, and men and women’s tennis. Brooks served as an athle�c training student at Appalachian State University from 2001-04. She worked with the sports of baseball and women’s soccer while at the Boone, N.C. school. In the summer of 2003 and 2004, Brooks served as an athle�c trainer with the Appalachian State Football Elite Camp, Distance Individual Camp and Cross Country Team Camp, all in 2004. In 2003, she worked the ASU Women’s Basketball Camp, Football Individual and Team Camp, Baseball Individual Showcase, Track & Field Camp and Cross Country Team Camp. In 2002-03, she was a volunteer high school athle�c trainer with Orthosport in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Brooks earned her Bachelor’s degree in Athle�c Training from Appalachian State in 2004 and her Master’s degree in Educa�on, concentra�ng in Counseling and Psychology from Troy this past August. She also a�ended Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia in 2002. Brooks holds cer�fica�ons in CPR and First Aid by the American Red Cross and is licensed with the State of Alabama. She is a member of the Southeast Athle�c Trainers’ Associa�on, Alabama Athle�c Trainers Associa�on, American Counseling Associa�on and Na�onal Athle�c Trainers’ Associa�on. She is also a life�me member of the Girl Scouts of USA and was a recipient of the Gold and Silver Awards.

PIONEER ARENA On January 16, 1998, Pioneer Arena at the Niswonger Student Commons opened its doors and has served as the home of Tusculum College volleyball and basketball for the past 12 years. The $10 million, 2,000-seat Pioneer Arena is part of the Sco� M. Niswonger Student Commons, which also houses the Alumni Weight Room. The facility encompasses an athle�c training and treatment center, swimming poop, team locker rooms, as well as a complete renova�on of Pioneer Gymnasium, which served as the home of Tusculum volleyball from 1982-97. Pioneer Arena’s playing surface experienced a makeover in 2007 and is spacious enough for two volleyball and basketball courts. Pioneer Arena has hosted several events, including the Food Lion South Atlan�c Conference Volleyball Tournament four �mes (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009). The facility has hosted numerous quarterfinal round games of the South Atlan�c Conference Basketball Tournament as well as the Tennessee High School basketball postseason tournaments, concerts and other community func�ons. The College’s commencement ceremonies are also held in Pioneer Arena each December and May. The 1,000-square foot Alumni Weight Room features free weights and nau�lus equipment, as well as treadmills, exercise bikes and condi�oning equipment. The installa�on of flatscreen, HD televisions were installed in 2008.
