M

oving towards achieving environmental friendly approach is pushing manufacturers and suppliers to look for green solutions on products and technologies that are currently taking the world’s consumer markets by storm. This eco trend is changing the way enterprise and SME do business and interact with their end customers. And most importantly, it is the consumers who are increasingly showing their affinity for companies who practice social and environmental responsibility. TiGiS (Taiwan International Green Industrial Show), commonly known as Green Taiwan, is the largest sustainable event in Taiwan. It is held in conjunction with BuildInG Taiwan (Taiwan Smart Green City Expo) in a four-day trade bonanza at the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei. The latter show, organized by BOFT and implemented by TAITRA and Expo Union Corporation, together with TiGiS, are aimed at promoting green business prospects while displaying the best green achievements of Taiwan. After decades of industry development, Taiwan has become a leader in innovation, competitive pricing, and high quality technology. Taiwan’s information and communications technologies have grown to take over the biggest share of the global market. As such, Taiwan is a leader in green technology and innovation. Ways to a Better Future

A

s sustainable development increases in significance, environmental concerns have become a major focus. In short, sustainable development must be based on the three principles of insular environmental protection, economic development, and social justice. Due to Taiwan's high population density, limited natural resources, and high frequency of natural disasters, Taiwan faces a tougher and more urgent challenge than other nations in the pursuit of sustainable development.

Speakers from Viridity Energy, Environmental Protection Administration ( Taiwan) and US Green Building Council kicked off the keynote plenary session with the topic on Sustainability. Based on past experiences, International Operations of US Green Building Council VP Jennivine Kwan talked about how the US have come to embrace a more ecofriendly environment as a direct result of green building and sustainability. The topic of green energy was also discussed by presenters from top-notch academic institutions in Taiwan, IT firms and government offices. The afternoon session touched on the subject of Green Building & Environment and Green Technology.

Organized by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), Bureau of Energy, Environmental Protection Administration, The American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei, C TCI Foundation, and Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the forum: The forum attracted academics and experts “Sustainable Development Conference – from all corners of the industry as well as Pathways to a Better Future” successfully members of the media in Taiwan. concluded yesterday in Conference Room 504 at the Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei. M

odernization theories in early stage used to hold that the development of science and industrialization can increase economic growth and enhance human well-being. However, under close inspection of the environmental sustainability issues, these theories have encountered serious challenges. In recent years, with the continuously rising of sustainability and environmental awareness, the issue of saving energy, reducing carbon emission and green economy are progressing as rapidly. With the advancement of technology, our life should not only focus on convenience, but should

also take care to reach the goal of environmental protection. Due to the evolvement of information and communication technology, global integration has become a leading trend, and human society has been eventually moving on to a whole new era of globalization. Therefore, in the digital age, the competitive advantage in the 21st century determines the pursuit of speed to elevate service for digital cities and the utilization of communication technology in order to adjust and improve the lapse of failing to take care of the environment during the process of industrialization.

Along with the exhibition, “Smart Green City Forum in Taiwan” with the theme of “Green Thinking, Living Smart!” will be held on the 9th and 11th of October, 2012. Through connecting international forum with professional exhibition, we are inviting world well-known foreign experts to interact with domestic professionals, to construct transnational interflow platform, and to assist suppliers of construction and technology in Taiwan in exploiting innovative opportunities and promoting the theme of “Intelligent and Green City” as the key cornerstone for Taiwan’s international competitiveness.

ydrogen is regarded as one of the most energyefficient green energy, and fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat, and water. Fuel cells are often compared to batteries. Both convert the energy produced by a chemical reaction into usable electric power. However, the fuel cell will produce electricity as long as fuel (hydrogen) is supplied, never losing its charge. All major nations are researching separating energy storage facilities, and Taiwan is putting a lot of efforts to delve into the development of energy storage batteries and fuel cell batteries. This year on Oct. 9, TAITRA, Expo Union Corp. and Taiwan Fuel Cell Partnership invited some well-known energy companies to the Energy Storage Batteries and Fuel Cell Batteries Forum. In the morning section of discussion, keynote speakers from Inventec, ITRI/IEK and Amita Technologies based their topic on recent development of worldwide ESS battery market and the applications of stacking cells in energy storage system (ESS). In the afternoon, chairman of Green Hydrotec Inc., Dr. M.H. Rei talked about the onsite production of fuel cell batteries and its promising market. Dr. M. H. Rei pointed out, “The role of hydrogen fuel is not only be perceived technically but also market ably.” Fuel cells are a promising technology for use as a source of heat and electricity for buildings, and as an electrical power source for electric motors propelling vehicles. Fuel cells operate best on pure hydrogen, which can be supplied by different ways. Outsourcing of high-purity hydrogen is not good to use because it is massive and too money-consuming during the process of obtaining. On-site production of hydrogen fuel from methanol steam reformer can get hydrogen economically and efficiently. Being a hydrogen supplier, Dr. M. H. Rei stressed that developing and marketing smaller onsite hydrogen generator technologies could offer a more modular path to hydrogen infrastructure build out. In terms of the application of hydrogen in people’s daily life. It is strongly recommended that such fuel cell systems can be equipped in remote villages and off-islands, which considerably cuts the cost the electric power and water infrastructure.

DAY 4 / Oct. 12 London Olympics Expert Shares Experience Forum in Taiwan in

Smart Green City

T

he second day of the Smar t Green City Forum concluded yesterday in an event that instilled a true spirit of “Green Thinking, Smart Living.” Speakers at the forum painted a vivid picture of the challenges confronting sustainability and environmental issues. Urban Land Institute (ULI) Europe Chief Executive Sir Joe Montgomery kicked off the topic “Low Carbon Olympic in London” where he explained London’s sustainable credentials across a range of different areas, from low carbon construction to land decontamination techniques deployed in building the Olympic park to minimize the resources whilst ensuring the buildings achieve high standards in energy efficiency. The chief executive described the Olympic experience as two-fold - the success and failure. “Like most cities around the world, London was built around the river Thames,” he said. “The London you see today is an economically-active city fueled by tourism and service sector.” However, Montgomery explained that more than 30 years ago East London, where the Olympic village is currently located, was an industrial-grade wasteland where no Londoners would ever turn to. There were even plans to change people’s views on the East with slogans “Londoners Look East.” “For the last 30 years, there was a strategic alliance in the UK to develop East London. Canary Wharf is the result of that, a success story,” said Montgomery.

In short, five brave developments have since escalated the momentum for growth – London City Airport, Millenium Dome, Excel Centre + Crossrail, Canary Wharf, and 2012 Olympic Games. However, questions regarding how to use the Olympics to help build an urban development future remains to be seen, said Montgomery in his closing speech. He added that London will share its experiences with the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and at the same time reflect on its future endeavors on sustainability. Dynamic City Foundation (DCF) Founder Neville Mars later joined the forum to discuss the topic “Integrated Planning Strategy in Future City - Caofeidian Ecocity.” Based on eight years of experience in China, Mars shared his past and ongoing plans to revitalize existing Chinese cities into eco cities. “We should not build an eco city from scratch but instead tr y and build an existing city into eco one,” he said. “As new cities begin to develop, sprawls will occur.” The solution is micro planning and postplanning. Mars backed up his explanation with an ex a m p l e o f J i n g h u, w h e re c i t y p l a n n e r s originally intended it to turn the city into an eco one from scratch. Instead, sprawls eventually formed several new and existing clusters in and around the rural parts of Jinghu, making it difficult to address issues such as water pollution, industrial wastes, and among others. “Eco cities will need to remediate its

environment (pollution) and micro mapping the existing conditions and understanding the city before any new development,” said Mars. The need to move towards dynamic building codes in clustered rural areas in China is the only guarantee to developing sustainable eco cities. According to Mars, there are currently 498 potential eco hubs in China. The afternoon session included speakers from Taipei City Government and Urban Planning Bureau in New York. A panel discussion on “Smart Nations – Green Blueprint” capped off the forum.

Experts Shed Light on Development and Applications of Smart Grids in Smart Grid Symposium [2012

S

even experts shared their expertise and experiences in smar t grids in the 2012 International Symposium on Smart Grids/ AMI, which was held in conjunction with the Taiwan International Green Show and Taiwan International Smart Green Industry City Expo yesterday. Faced with energy shortage and environmental issues, smart grids are a global trend in power distribution and management, said Wang Yunnming, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Energy, in his opening speech. Smart grids can bring unstable power generated from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, hydro-electric and tidal power, into normal power supply systems and cut down energy waste, Wang added. It is imperative for Taiwan, where 99% of energy is imported, to develop smart grids in order to increase sources of energy for power generation and better manage power distribution and usage, said Ho Wu-chi, Deputy General Director, Green Energy and Environment Lab, Institute of Technology Research Institute (ITRI), in the introductory speech. Therefore, the government of Taiwan has designed a 20-year master plan to develop smart grids to better prepare for the future, he added. The symposium gathered smart grid experts from Japan, Israel, Singapore, Poland and Taiwan to share their smart grid expertise and experiences. Taiwan announced a smart grid master plan last month, which would invest about US$4 billion to enhance the grid infrastructure before 2030. The objectives are to encourage energy conservation and emission reduction and to enhance the use of green energy. ITRI will also cooperate with National Science Council to support Bureau of Energy to develop

the offshore island of Peng-Hu into a smart grid demonstration site, where smart grid technologies and equipment will be evaluated, Liang said. Kobe Yahav, Head of the Smart Grid Program, Israel Electric Institute (IEC), which generates and provides all the electricity in Israel, spoke on Israel’s smart grid roadmap and challenge. He said Israel needs smart grids because the country has very little energy reserve. IEC has several business targets related to smart grids, including encouraging active participation of the customers, accommodating renewable energy, storage and EV for a greener environment, and leveraging the operational and energetic efficiency by optimizing the use of the infrastructure. J.C. Kuo, Chief Exper t of Communication and Power Utilization Company, talked about d e v e l o p m e n t o f C h i n a ’s s m a r t g r i d s a n d semiconductors for smart grids. In 2009, a plan was announced to complete “Rugged Smart Grid” by 2020, Kuo said. Currently, the strategy plan, research project, lab trial and field trial system have already been developed, he said, adding that mass deployment is on going. The higher developed economic zone is located in eastern China, which lacks energy resource, while western China is rich in energy resource, he said. To support the economic development in China, the government is deploying smart grids to utilize the energy resources and improve the performance of power stability and power quality, including enabling the development of renewable energy and power industry technology innovation, he added. Therefore, there is demand for large volume endpoint devices for smart grids, including communication, data

acquisition, metering, digital signal processing, control and security chips, he said. Other speakers include Masahiro Murakawa, Smart System Research Group Leader of National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology of Japan, Cheng Bo-chao, Associate Professor of National Chung-cheng University of Taiwan, Varun Chugh, Technical Solutions Manager of eMeter, and Jim Cherng, CEO of Amita Technologies Inc. They talked about power line communication, smart grid security challenges, demand management systems and lithium battery devices for smart grids respectively.

Japan Brings Green Technology to Taiwan [2012

I

n conjunction with 2012 Taiwan International Green Industry Show (TiGiS; Clean Energy, Green Environment, & Water Technology), Interchange Association, Japan (IAJ) has invited five Japanese enterprises with state of the art green power innovation to exchange new ideas with Taiwan industry. The five companies each have their own patent technologies in different areas. Sensing Laboratory‘s microwave sterilization system can instantly destroy viruses by using microwave output power as low as 20 to 30 w in both water and the air. The efficient decomposition technology for a toxic substance by microwaves can be used in hospitals, swimming pools, or any public areas for disinfection and odor elimination. International Engineered Environmental Solutions has developed an absorbent powder that will draw contaminate or friendly material to itself and hold oil or chemicals in an open cell structure that permit the release of the contaminate only through mechanical compression. The absorbent powder reacts in seconds, does not require heat, can be used many times and actually works best when reapplied. It can be made in different sizes and works in extremely large quantities. Birds

and mammals can be cleaned with the powder and it is environmental friendly. A-WING International produces small and micro wind turbines and generators for residential and commercial use. It is specifically developed for very low wind speed regions, such as Japan, to provide optimal generation levels. Their small wind turbines are designed for use in regions without electricity, or areas where commercial power is difficult to obtain. In combination with solar power, the hybrid systems provide a stable and reliable energy supply. The new technologies that NEC Facilities, Ltd. brought are wastewater treatment and collection facilities. The facilities are catered to industries that discharge a lot of waste water, such as semiconductors, LCD, and machinery part manufactures. Compared to present technologies, not only this new solution is more efficient but also reduces cost by far. Originating from the University of Tsukuba entrepreneurial firms, Sun Care Fuels Corporation has developed machineries that will turn any kind of vegetable or animal based oil into bio-diesel fuel. These meeting opportunities have brought the new green

technologies from Japan and opened up a promising channel for both parties.
