A team from Clemson University’s College of Engineering and Science travels throughout South Carolina each spring to spark the interest of middle- and highschool students and encourage them to consider a career in engineering. One goal of the “EMAGINE” tour is to shatter the misconception that engineering is boring, a field reserved for math-and-science brainiacs. “You also have to be creative. Engineers and scientists have been and always will be the great problem solvers of their time,” says Brad Putman, associate professor in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering and academic lead of the program. “Our hope is that this program will reach students who have never considered engineering and further encourage those who have.” To show how engineering applies to the real world, the Clemson Emagine team leads students through a series of design challenges that include activities in civil, electrical and computer, materials science and mechanical engineering. The middle- and high-school students also hear from current engineering students and faculty about the rigors of an engineering curriculum and what they can do to prepare for college.
