When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, he shared the views of the other founders that our rights originated in “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” He continued, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Our founding fathers did not believe that rights are bestowed by governments. Rather, they understood that our rights are given by God our Creator, and that “to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men…” In other words, our God-given rights are to be protected by our government. Our rulers are not to take the place of God but are to protect our inherent rights which are bestowed by “the Supreme Judge of the world,” as Jefferson referred to Him.

The American and French Revolutionaries differed greatly in their views of the ultimate source of rights. While both believed in natural rights of a sort, the Americans acknowledged “Nature’s God,” who endowed humans with their rights. The French made no such appeal. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1793 states, “All men are equal by nature and before the law,” without reference to a Creator. We all know that the outcomes were very different, as the French Revolution and its guillotine degenerated into The Terror and led to the dictatorship of Napoleon. Dostoyevsky was right when he wrote, “If there is no God, then all things are permissible.” Many of the ruling elites today ignore our history. They acknowledge no higher authority than the politicians and judges in power. They feel that only they can determine which rights we may enjoy, and which rights we must surrender for our own “safety and security” or for the

“good” of society. It is not their place to determine which of our God-given rights we may enjoy. They need to recall these words by Jefferson: “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure if we have removed their only firm basis: a conviction in the minds of men that these liberties are the gift of God?” As we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, let us take time to reflect on the source of our rights. Remember the sacrifices of the heroes and patriots who signed the Declaration with these concluding words: “…with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Let us thank our Creator for our rights and be grateful for those who have defended those rights. May we also follow their example and pledge to defend our rights today against over-bearing government with our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.

Julie Ayers, Managing Editor Americans celebrate the Fourth of July in various ways: picnicking with family, boating on the lake, playing a friendly neighborhood game of baseball, cheering at parades, and watching spectacular fireworks displays. In the midst of all the activities, do we ever stop and think about what we are celebrating? Do we ponder the significance of this important holiday? How many of us take the time on July 4th to laud the sacrifices our forefathers made to obtain independence and those who fought to protect it? For many Americans July 4th is just a day to picnic, parade and play. The true meaning is lost on the celebrants who are absorbed in their holiday festivities, ignorantly unaware of the connection to

visioned for this great land and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for liberty and freedom. It’s honoring this great country which is like no other because of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. On behalf of our dedicated staff, we thank you and wish you and yours a happy 4th of July!

the day our country declared its freedom from tyranny. I challenge all Americans this July to set aside time with their family and friends, to demonstrate their appreciation of this magnificent day. We should honor our forefathers by fighting for liberty today. Tyranny is afoot in our own government. Should we just ignore it and allow all that our predecessors fought for to have been in vain? Should we let our government continue to violate our constitutional rights? At times we may feel fatigued by the overwhelming effort required to stand up to the tyrants who would destroy our country, but we cannot admit defeat. Our forefathers faced more demanding circumstances than us, but they did not give up; neither should we.

The Constitutionalist Today provides a voice for freedom-loving Americans and urges them to action. Our aim is to educate citizens about our nation’s founding documents and to analyze current events based on their principles. We do not offer investigative, in-depth reporting. While we share many common values, our opinions sometimes differ. This paper’s staff and writers possess a range of worldviews from Biblical to secular and from conservative to libertarian. A diverse group, our Founding Fathers also had their differences. However, those who established the greatest free nation on earth were united in their love of liberty and resistance to tyranny. All Things to All Constitutionalists Teddy M. Otero IV, Creative Director/Internet Manager Just six months old, The Constitutionalist Today has turned up the volume of “We the People” across Colorado. In print and online, TCT has joined the resurgent conservative chorus nationwide. To say that the TCT staff has learned a few things over the past six months would be a gross understatement. Indeed, assembling and publishing each issue has challenged and rewarded us in ways we could never have imagined! One of the rewards has been the thrill of helping people engage with the Constitution and grapple with the issues on a level not seen in our lifetimes; one of the challenges has been the misconceived reactions of the very people we are striving to unite. TCT emerged from the same political primordial that spawned grassroots liberty groups in every state, and is apparently subject to the same factional power grabs. If the loudest voices were to be believed, TCT is somehow too conservative for libertarians, yet too liberal for conservatives; TCT is a Republican mouthpiece according to third parties, yet written by grassroots riffraff according to the “establishment;” TCT reads too lightly for intellectuals yet is too opinionated for news-seekers. In fact, our only consistent portrayal is by liberals, as hateful, ignorant and conspiratorial. Irony comes full circle in our publishing model: as a paper by and for “We the People,” TCT is written by the very factions

who take issue with our content! Liberty group leaders contribute regularly to ensure that TCT reflects the movement, and conservative Republican politicians write a handful of articles as well. (Our editorial stance at present, both confirmed and challenged by history, is that conservatism’s most likely vessel for success in the near future is the GOP.) Our submissions are rounded out by concerned Constitution-loving citizens, conservative and libertarian both. With respect to the types of articles that appear, it should be noted that TCT is a monthly opinion journal and constitutional primer—not a daily newspaper. Currently hashing out pre-primary disagreements, our movement will put aside differences after the primaries and engage the real enemies of liberty in the arena of ideas. The battle will be fierce, the stakes could not be higher, and The Constitutionalist Today will fight beside you, every step of the way.

Tired of Disrespect A woman stumping for Jane Norton came to my home this week. Soon after beginning her pitch, she commented about the reception Ms. Norton got at the caucuses in Loveland. She said she was disgusted with the lack of respect shown by Buck supporters, and if for no other reason, I should vote for Jane to return civility to politics. When I was able to get a word in, I told her that supporters of Weins, Tidwell and those undecided also were upset at Jane and that from my point of view, any candidate getting into a race in this political climate had better be ready for anything. To not expect passion and heated disagreement was naïve. I also told her that I, too, think we don’t have enough civility in the world but I see booing and angry shouting at my grandson’s basketball games. Shouldn’t happen, but it’s the reaction that counts. The kids don’t whine about it, they move on. I told her that our new senator is going to be under fire every day—angry e-mails, phone calls, upset voters. It’s not a job for the thin-skinned or faint of heart and I said Ms. Norton can’t rely on her staff to shield her from criticism. America is angry and we’re tired of being disrespected, too. In a less than civil tone, my visitor said, “You should have told me you’re a Buck supporter when you opened the door.” To that I replied, “I wasn’t when I opened the door, but I am now.” -Mannis Gerard Stawser, Colorado Springs

Dan Maes’ Comments Criticized Dan Maes made some recent comments in the Grand Junction Sentinel about itemized bills from businesses and utility companies. He was quoted as saying, “It would be wiser for them just to build it into the

cost of doing business rather than itemizing it as a separate fee.” When discussing his reasoning behind this statement he said, “If I itemize it separately, it’s an annoyance.” These statements come from the candidate who touts transparency in government. If I am not mistaken itemized billing allows for customers to see the transparency in fees that they are being billed. As a businessman, Maes should know that customers want a detailed bill, so they are able to see exactly the reasons they are being charged. Moreover, on a utility bill people want to know their usage amount and the price they are charged for that usage. Giving a customer a lump sum bill would cause a lot of havoc for utility companies customer service representatives, because they would be inundated with calls by people wanting to know what they were charged. Sorry, if it is an annoyance to you Dan, but I want to see why I am being charged. -Brenden Andrizzi It appears that my Republican opponent is so desperate for positive press that the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel felt the need to misrepresent some of my comments regarding the issues of taxes and fees on public utility bills. In an interview that started with the discussion of three tax initiatives that lead to a discussion on the ELIMINATION of taxes and fees on telephone bills the writer evolved the conversation into the discussion of taxes and fees on private business service bills. What my opinion is as to how I manage taxes and fees on a private business bill and what that policy would be regarding public utility bills, are two completely different subjects. The writer, whether intentional or unintentional, made the assumption that how I manage my business invoices would be the same as how I would handle public utility bills. This could not be further from the truth and my supporters should have 100% confidence that I will bring the state of Colorado to a higher level of transparency than has ever been seen before. Anyone who has followed my campaign knows that my calendar is open to the public contrary to my opponent’s as is every penny that we receive and every penny that is spent. In the future, I hope that the Grand Junction Sentinel and I can avoid this confusion. -Dan Maes, candidate for governor

Focus on the Fight We need to remember our goal and not let human nature distract us. It’s the same story you’ve probably heard hundreds of times: I’ve never been involved in politics but during the last presidential election, found myself feeling angry, helpless and disenfranchised. Instead of being a victim, I joined and become very active with my local tea party. Many hours were spent working on projects and rallies. Then human nature took its course. As I’m beginning to see with other groups, egos take over and the directions change. I’m just as much to blame as the others. There was a falling out amongst the steering committee and a group segregated off on a journey of their own agenda. But in its wake, it poisoned the original group and the inner workings morphed into something I didn’t like. So, I left. It would have been easy to go back to spending time on my own business and letting others do the grassroots work. However, I can no longer depend on others. It is my duty as a citizen to do all that I can to protect our nation. I truly love my country and do not want to see it decimated by the current stench that is in D.C. I began looking at other groups (this newspaper is great in informing us of all

the groups) and I am settling into a new assembly of peeps. My concern is that there are so many people that were involved and are now once again feeling disinterested in ‘doing something’ because of the distractions. And, there are so many distractions. We need to remember to stay strong and keep our eye on the goal. Now is the time, we cannot leave it to others to fix. It is up to us to save this great country…if we love it, we have no other choice. We need to stay vigilant and be involved. We need to keep our neighbors and friends engaged. We need to motivate. Negative Tactics Cause Damage I have noticed an unsettling and unpleasant trend in the race for the Republican U.S. Senate seat. Having listened to both camp’s messages, views, “facts,” and attacks, I, and others, have become increasingly concerned. This is reflective of what I see as a broader, largely unspoken conservative view. It’s my belief that our movement is being weakened by the ongoing attacks, both benign and intentional, and we allow them at the peril of our cause. We all agree that voters must know their candidates. They should fundamentally understand all candidates’ records, beliefs, actions, and how they will vote. What may seem to simply be exposing facts and truths about one’s opponent may truly be twisting these contextual facts and statements, making their tone negative and foul with a malicious intention. We must recognize the fine line between genuine, beneficial muckraking to expose a candidate for who he or she is, and the downright nasty proposition of combative, destructive campaigning in order to deal a candidate a grave political wound. We must refuse to lower ourselves to the petty tactics of attacking those with whom we agree on so much. We must refute the charges and policies of the Democrats, without personally attacking them or their records. We must regroup, now and after August 10, united, to defeat the liberals. This principled idealism may seem trivial, but if we approach the November elections as a divided faction, our electoral and governance goals will be equally trivial. Please understand that I seek not to reprimand anyone but rather to recommend a kinder, more constructive kind of campaigning. This is the best interest of our cause and our great state. Debate Season I attended the last “debate” at the Stargazers Theater advertised by The Constitutionalist Today as being between Maes and McInnis. I am on the fence about which one I would vote for, but was terribly disappointed when McInnis didn’t show. While that was irritating to me I was also delighted to hear and see Maes field questions and speak on a variety of issues without interruption from an opposing candidate for almost two hours. Maes also took audience questions, so I know I heard unscripted answers. He seems to have a clear direction in mind for Colorado, and although I questioned a few of his answers, anything would be better than job-killing Ritter. At the El Paso County Tea Party on Saturday, McInnis used a debate with Hickenlooper in Denver to explain his absence; that’s a debate I didn’t hear about! He may have attended a meeting with Hickenlooper that day, but nothing of substance was “debated.” Was there a meeting? A debate? Is McInnis playing fast and loose with political terminology? At the rally, McInnis also said he has “debated” Maes 6-7 times already, yet the only one I know of was at Mr Biggs a few months ago; and that was a forum, not a debate! What’s going on here? Does McInnis need us to define DEBATE, FORUM, and MEETING for him? -H.M. I know TCT has put on many debates and am curious why we have not heard any mention of a debate between these two. I believe it is in the best interest of the people that we be allowed to attend these debates, and hear the candidates converse on the issues so that we can make informed decisions. It is the deliberate government propaganda that America’s most dangerous enemies are overseas. They tell us that the main threat to our freedoms and our way of life comes from other countries. Preying upon our fears, our leaders are free to strip us of our liberty and property while our eyes are fixed on the latest war. Our men and women in uniform serve brilliantly and bravely. We owe them honor for their service each and every time. For the rest of us to be constantly on our guard to make certain that they are only sent to fight wars that are essential to our national security does not slight their service; it is in fact our part of the patriotic equation. The “gold star moms” that I have toured with on the Tea Party Express routinely tell the crowds, “If we let liberty die here on our watch, then my son died in vain.” My own son in the Army National Guard has not yet been deployed, but I share this same concern. We must do our part to preserve our freedoms here at home. A major part of that is ensuring that our wars are always essential, righteous and Constitutional.

Our most dangerous and capable enemy is, and long has been, our very own government. But since America surely has real enemies, foreign as well as domestic, how should the thoughtful patriot approach this great subject of war and peace, of wars and rumors of wars? I believe that we ought to consider the wisdom of our Founders who fought the war that secured our independence. They recommended a foreign policy of free trade with all, treaties with very few, and as far as possible, wars with none. Perhaps nobody under-

and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” Even George Orwell did not foresee the future more clearly. Another admonition was to preserve the Constitution as sacred. He urged elected officials “to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of the powers of one department to encroach upon another.” He warned further that, “The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one, and thus to create, whatever the form of government, a real despotism.” Today the three branches of the federal government vie for power and overlap considerably, each of them exercising vastly more power than the Constitution permits. Nowhere is this more evident than the power wielded by the President to wage war. Washington went on to discuss foreign relations. “Observe good faith and justice towards all nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all.” “Nothing is more essential than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated.” Where such a policy has not been followed, “The peace often, sometimes perhaps the liberty, of nations, has been the victim.” “Such attachments” he added should be “particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent

How should the thoughtful patriot approach this great subject of war and peace, of wars and rumors of wars? stood war, peace and liberty better than our first president, George Washington. If the Declaration of Independence is one pillar or bookend of the Constitution, then I suggest that George Washington’s farewell speech deserves to be the other. In the opening paragraphs, the “father of our country” who spent 45 years in true public service, declined a third term as President. After stepping down at the zenith of his popularity from the nation’s highest office, he went on to issue several very wise and thoughtful warnings. The first was against the factious nature of political parties, calling them “combinations and associations, under whatever plausible character” and “artful and enterprising minorities.” He alerted us that they could become “potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people

patriot.” In this same vein he warned that “real patriots are liable to become suspected and odious” but that “tools and dupes” might win “the applause and confidence of the people.” “The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible.” Trade freely, but avoid entanglements. Our geography offers us unique advantages. “Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. … we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.” Today, overreaching officials have violated every maxim offered by our first and greatest leader. As patriots, we need to challenge their overreaching at every turn, and especially when it comes to putting our sons in harms way. In every military conflict we must ask at minimum if the engagement is Constitutional, whether it directly defends our nation or true allies, and whether it could have been prevented by fewer entanglements and freer trade. We may become “suspects” in the minds of some, while the populists gain “the applause and confidence of the people.” But we owe nothing less to our country, our Founders, our men and women in uniform, and to freedom itself. What does the Fourth of July mean to you? There is a poster on my office wall of a tiny pine tree; it grows from a rocky crevice in Bryce National Park. In the background are spires of rock towers framing the evergreen boughs. Our nation’s birth and this tree share a similar struggle, illustrated by the words on the poster, “DETERMINATION: The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” That little tree, struggling to survive in a hostile environment, symbolizes the determination our forefathers needed to build this great Republic. Seeds of liberty were also planted in rocky soil, but grew despite destructive forces. Courageous, creative people would rather earn the right to selfdetermination than be seduced by the caretaker tyranny of a Master Gardener. And those who preferred “softer soil” mocked them: “Why bother? You fight a losing battle!” Yet they persevered, knowing that roots grow stronger through a foundation of rock solid principles. As Abraham Lincoln said, “...You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.” It takes character and courage to defend natural laws and protect America’s miracle. Each effort to pry us loose from where we’ve been planted only serves to strengthen our hold and increase our commitment! Happy Independence Day! The choice was to cower before a tyranny that subjected their souls to defilement…or to stand up to it. This July 4th I will close my eyes and travel back in time and place to be in that hall. In my own heart and mind I will choose to stand up to the tyranny presently creeping into our nation. I will drop-by-drop squeeze the slave from myself and embrace the impossible demands that may come my way. Compiled by Cindy Lyons, Senior Staff Writer TCT: The writers and signers of the Declaration of Independence were men of courage, honor and had deep devotion to their new country. What do you think motivated and inspired them to write/sign the Declaration? Do you think there are men today who could compare to them? Who are they and how would they compare? Richard: After a couple of hundred years we have put these men on such pedestals that it would be hard for me to name a single person that I would say, ‘Yep, that’s on

time he was going to be president. He was worried about the years after he was going to be president. Do I see a lot of people like the Founding Fathers in terms of courage and that sort of vision? I frankly don’t. Jarred: I think it was a thirst and a respect for the freedoms they enjoyed. People may not know that the colonists where under British rule for years and didn’t really care until someone decided they were going to try to levy some more taxes. The freedoms that were enjoyed for 30 or more years were worth fighting for. If Britain had taken a hands off approach, we might be like Canada where you do your own thing but you still have a queen. But they said, “We have experienced this taste of freedom and liberty in the new world. We like it and we want to keep it.” That is the message to keep on Independence Day.

Do I see a lot of people like the Founding Fathers in terms of courage and that sort of vision? I frankly don’t. the level of a Thomas Jefferson or a George Washington or any of our Founding Fathers.’ I think the beauty of our Founding Fathers is that they didn’t just look at the next four years and the next election. They didn’t just look at their little career. They were really looking at forming a foundation for a country. President Bush saw the bigger picture. An example would be that they were talking about his personal ratings that were down. I don’t think he cared about his personal ratings. He cared about doing a good job in that position and preparing the United States for a long term war on terrorism. Did that mean that some other issues that he should have paid attention to didn’t get as much attention? Yes. He was concerned about more than just the

Richard: I think the McCullough book 1776 does a good job of explaining the British motivation when it came to taxation on the colonies. They needed the money. The government had grown too big to fund itself. They looked at the colonies as a funding source. The colonists eventually said, “Nope too much!” There comes a breaking point and I think that breaking point is in America now. We get that we have to pay taxes. We want services from the federal government, from state and local government. It’s not that we are some sort of militia folks in a hut

where we say we want anarchy and services without taxation. Jarred: But it is that lack of representation. We hear it on the shows all the time that their representatives in Congress do no such thing. Richard: Even if they do a good job in representing them there comes a time where they say, “I just can’t afford this any longer.” The example I would give is the recent Mill Levy. There were a lot of people who could have afforded a Mill Levy. I think the reason so many people voted against it was that there was a certain group of people when hard economic times were hitting they said, “Now is not the time to do this.” Beyond that if you are going to do this as an emergency measure put a sunset period on it so we know that it goes away when times get better. TCT: What dangers did these brave men face then and what are the dangers now? Richard: The dangers now are nothing to what they faced. I see brave individuals in the Tea Party movement and in politics. I don’t think we have seen that kind of individual sacrifice in their life and in their families’ lives. The closest are those that are in the military. It sure isn’t politicians. Jarred: The danger then was war and a physical disruption of the way of life they enjoyed. The danger now is the creep of European-style socialism. It wouldn’t be as disruptive as musket balls, TNT, etc., but would be just as degenerative to the

way of life that we have enjoyed for the last 60 to 150 more years. Liberals want us to go back to European-style socialism. Acquiring knowledge used to be important to me. I’ve always loved to learn and reading was often one of my favorite pastimes. As I’ve grown older though, I’ve come to realize that learning is pretty useless if not accompanied by wisdom–making use of that knowledge in the best possible way. There are many people whose heads are full of knowledge but they know nothing of wisdom. I don’t want to be like them, especially not now. These are difficult days, there’s so much coming at us from every direction, so much to discern and to act upon, and without wisdom, there’s no real way to know how to rightly respond to any of it. Life in our country today resembles the times when Thomas Paine wrote: “These are the times that try men’s souls.” These are trying times, no matter how you look at it. What is happening in our country is disconcerting to say the least. If we want to maintain our freedom, if we want to continue to live in the greatest nation (flaws and all) that ever existed, it will require action not just words. What action though, is the question for which wisdom alone has the answer. Wisdom does not dictate that only one response is the correct one to any crisis or troubled times but it does say that there are wise responses or solutions to the seemingly insurmountable issues we are facing today, if we choose to seek them out. When I decided that I could no longer justify sitting on the sidelines and just complain about the circumstances I was doing nothing about, I joined the local 9-12 group in Colorado Springs, now called the Pikes Peak Patriots. I chose them because of the 9 principles and the 12 values which were the foundation upon which they based all of their decisions and actions. I loved the idea of having time-tested, non-negotiable values and principles upon which to build a course of action in order to achieve common goals. With the foundation of principles and values in place, it may now be time to take this to another level, using the wisdom of the ants, the badger, the locusts and the lizard. In the book of Proverbs, chapter 30, verse 24 of the New Living Translation it says, “There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise,”

New Energy Policies Triple Threat to Colorado Economy Jeff Crank, Featured Writer

Sometimes it feels like government just doesn’t know how or when to stop “helping” our economic recovery. All we need to do is look at the triple threat to our energy affordability— advanced under the guise of job creation—posed by Congress, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Denver legislators to see this is true. In Congress, energy taxes are back on the agenda, this time in the form of the Kerry-Lieberman cap-and-trade bill. Kerry-Lieberman breaks with proposals that seek an economy-wide cap, instead treating

inal author, Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), warned the regulations threaten to visit “a glorious mess” on the U.S. economy. The EPA regulations aim to control cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, planes, trains, ships, boats, tractors, mining equipment, RVs, lawn mowers, forklifts and just about everything else with a motor. And even some things that don’t, like warehouses, schools, large churches and commercial kitchens that use natural gas and eventually even large, single-family homes. There are myriad forces at work trying to pull the EPA back from the edge, but if they succeed in extending their regulatory control over such an important part of the economy Colorado is sure to feel the pinch. The third layer of price increases that we will have to deal with is a new Colorado law that requires investor-owned utilities to buy 30 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020, making us the state with the second highest such standard in the country. Governor Ritter tried to claim that this subsidy would somehow create 100,000 jobs. As is always the case with proponents of the latest government subsidy program, Ritter’s claim neglects to consider the other jobs that will either be destroyed or never created because of the increased costs of electricity. America is not the first country to try to sell its citizens on the myth of government-supported green jobs. A study by Professor Gabriel Calzada Alverez found that Spain’s trip down this rabbit hole cost them 2.2 jobs for every one subsidized green job. Additionally, because of the gossamer nature of green jobs, only one in ten of the green jobs were permanent. Colorado, and other states hooked on government jobs, is in danger of repeating the Spanish experience. The triple threat posed by federal, state and regulatory price hikes is endangering Colorado’s economic recovery. However, Americans for Prosperity has launched a project called November is Coming to let lawmakers know that if they insist on policies that centralize economic decisions, ignore their constituents’ day-today concerns in favor of special interests and threaten our well-being, we will not support them in the next election. America is not the first country to try to sell its citizens on the myth of government-supported green jobs. different sectors of the economy differently in the hopes of obfuscating the economic damage and buying political support. However, the bill still contains the same old tired cap-and-trade program the country has soundly rejected, threatens green tariffs on countries that don’t self-impose carbon austerity measures and subsidizes less efficient but politically-popular renewable energy. It’s possible, but unlikely, that the disaster in the Gulf will quiet enough critics of central energy planning for Kerry-Lieberman to pick up steam. What will Kerry-Lieberman mean for Colorado? According to the Institute for Energy Research, Colorado gets more than 90 percent of its electricity from dependable and affordable traditional fuels, which means we will be particularly hard hit by cap-and-trade. An analysis of the cap-and-trade bill that passed the U.S. House last year—and is the model for the current Kerry-Lieberman bill in the Senate—found Coloradoans’ electricity prices would increase up to 60 percent, gasoline would increase by 27 percent and natural gas up to 78 percent, all by 2030. These prices increases are not statistical abstracts that occur in a vacuum, which is the way we are often tempted to consider them. Colorado residents on fixed incomes will struggle to make ends meet. Families will have to skimp on food budgets, delay summer vacations or forego much needed school supplies in order to pay higher gasoline and electric bills. Energy policies impact every corner of lives, and we should not ever forget that. Unfortunately, these cap-and-trade price hikes would be piled on top of onerous new regulations the Environmental Protection Agency is promulgating. The EPA wants to regulate greenhouse gases under the 1970 Clean Air Act, something it was never designed to do. The Act’s orig-

Amendment 61 Stops Deficit Spending Natalie Menten, Guest Writer

If someone stole your wallet, you’d yell, “Stop, thief!” If that thief got away with your wallet and began running up credit card debt, you would cancel the cards. Theft of credit is what politicians are doing to you now. Amendment 61 strives to end their unlimited access to your credit card by requiring balanced state budgets. Refuse to be a victim any longer – vote for Amendment 61. Do you know how much your state and local debt burden totals? No one does. Governments don’t publish those figures. They also vary the names of their many forms of debt. Taxpayers must repay with interest every dollar politicians squander. The total of payments over the life of these

debts is billions of dollars. All that interest buys us…nothing. Our original U.S. Constitution from 1876 says the state shall be debt-free and “shall not contract any debt by loan in any form.” Liberal politicians and judges have evaded that clear ban. caused by borrowed money that could not be repaid—huge debts by Wall Street, federal agencies, banks, corporations, and mortgage borrowers. We are in a deep hole and it’s time we stopped digging. We must restore a firm financial foundation for economic recovery. Some wish our state constitution was shorter, but certain rules belong there. An effective limit on government debt is one of them. Politicians won’t restrain themselves when they can instead choose to spend money now and let your children repay it later. That tactic of buying shortterm votes and passing the buck is politically appealing, but immoral. It happens, but it shouldn’t. Total state government spending is now $19.6 billion yearly. Despite false cries of “cuts,” it has risen every year for three decades. Amendment 61 simply says state government can’t spend money it doesn’t have; that’s just common sense. Amendment 61 also reduces the length of the Colorado State Constitution. It adds 309 words, but repeals 664 words of obsolete language—a net reduction of 355 words. Want to streamline the state constitution? Vote “yes” to Amendment 61. Special interest groups have raised over one million dollars so far to defeat Amendment 61. They live off big government’s wasteful spending. Four groups alone have given $620,000, and 99.8% of opposition funds come from groups, not individuals. They don’t want to help you, they want to enslave you. Remember, debts are called “bonds” because they put you in bondage to creditors like our opponents. Article Defines “Medical Marijuana” Kyle Getchey, Contributing Writer Under Article XVIII, §14 of the Colorado Constitution, the medical use of marijuana is legal for persons suffering from defined debilitating conditions upon the certification of a licensed physician. Enacted into law through the initiative process by the voters of Colorado in November 2000, the article sketches an outline by which a “patient” may qualify for a “registry identification card.” It contemplates the role of a “primary care-giver,” who is a person other than the patient that “has significant responsibility for managing the well-being of a patient who has a debilitating medical condition.” No mention of medical marijuana dispensaries is made in the article. In The People of the State of Colorado v. Clendenin (2009), the Colorado Court of Appeals held that “to qualify as a “primary care-giver” a person must do more than merely supply a patient who has a debilitating medical condition with marijuana.” Because the article defines a “primary caregiver” as “a person, other than the patient and the patient’s physician, who is 18 years of age or older and has a significant responsibility for managing the well-being of a patient who has a debilitating medical condition,” the court reasoned that “an individual must do more than simply supply a patient with medical marijuana to qualify as a “primary care-giver.” In the wake of the decision by the Colorado Court of Appeals, the legislature passed S-109 and HB-1284, which Governor Bill Ritter signed into law June 7, 2010.

Under S-109, patients must have a “bona fide” relationship with the doctors who recommend marijuana to them. Accordingly, a doctor must complete a full assessment of a patient’s medical history; consult with the patient with respect to his debilitating condition before the patient applies for a registry identification card; be available to provide follow-up care and treatment to the patient to determine the efficacy of the use of medical marijuana as a treatment of the patient’s debilitating medical condition; and the physician cannot have any financial relationship with a medical marijuana dispensary. Under HB-1284, a one-year moratorium is placed on the opening of new medical marijuana dispensaries as of July 1, 2010, but allows current medical marijuana dispensaries to operate for a year before becoming licensed. Also, the law requires that medical marijuana dispensaries must pay a state licensing fee, shall be located no closer than 1,000 feet from a school or daycare, and operators of dispensaries must oversee the cultivation of at least 70% of the marijuana dispensed at their facility. Additionally, HB-1284 grants local municipalities the authority to prohibit the establishment of dispensaries in their community, however, “primary care-givers” are legally permitted to provide marijuana for up to five patients in those cities that choose to formally ban medical marijuana dispensaries. Thus, the new law makes a distinction between medical marijuana dispensaries and “primary care-givers,” who receive elevated protection under the article of the state constitution.

Clear the Bench Colorado Focus Shifts to Mullarkey’s Replacement Kyle Getchey, Contributing Writer Matt Arnold’s organization Clear the Bench Colorado has created a lot of turmoil for some Colorado Supreme Court justices who are up for their once in a decade retention election this year. Originally occupied with excusing four of the Supremes, Arnold’s focus has now shifted to three, following Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey’s recent decision to retire in view of rising unpopularity and a likely dethroning from her seat at the head of the bench. Interestingly, the “apolitical” Mullarkey opted to set her retirement date for November 30. This means that the judicial nominating committee will have to submit a list of nominees to equally objectionable Democrat Governor Bill Ritter, who will then appoint Mullarkey’s successor before resigning his seat. Coincidentally, Ritter and Mullarkey have identical reasons for retiring; neither one now seeks re-election because each would like to spend more time with their family. Huh, go figure. Serving as the impetus for Arnold’s one-man campaign to make voters aware of their once in a decade opportunity to refuse the retention of the three remaining justices on the ballot (Michael Bender, Alex Martinez, and Nancy Rice) are five constitutionally abhorrent decisions handed down by Colorado’s high court in the last several years. Although the majority of the court afforded deference to legislation passed by the Democrat-controlled legislature in the most recent of these de-

cisions, it at the same time violated the express language of Colorado’s Constitution, and ultimately the will of Colorado taxpayers. In Mesa County Board of County Commissioners v. State of Colorado (2009), the Colorado Supreme Court held that amendment SB-199 to the School Finance Act, adopted by the Colorado General As-

The court reasoned that even though amendment SB-199 resulted in a net increase of tax revenue of $117,838,000 to Colorado’s general fund in 2007 alone, and despite the finding of the district court that insufficient notification had been given to Colorado voters to authorize the net increase in taxation created by SB-199 (as per TABOR), the amendment to the School Finance Act did not violate Colorado’s Constitution. In the opinion issued by Chief Justice Mullarkey, the court took care of both the concerns over the net increase in revenue to the state and the lack of voter notification and approval in one fell swoop. Acknowledging that subsection (4)(a) of TABOR stipulates that “districts must have voter approval in advance for…a tax policy change directly causing a net tax

revenue gain to any district,” the court nevertheless found that: …to understand the language “tax policy change” in any real sense, it cannot be applied to any policy modifications that may have a de minimis (minimal) impact on a district’s revenues. To apply the limit in such a broad manner would make any legislative action in the revenue arena nearly impossible and cripple the government’s ability to function. In some cases, the cost of the election could exceed the additional revenue obtained, an absurd result that the voters could not have intended when they passed [TABOR].

Hmm. So, let me see if I have this straight: in order to understand clearly written express terms in a real sense, Colorado’s Supreme Court found that the unequivocal language of TABOR does not apply in the imaginary scenario where $117,838,000 has a minimal impact on Colorado’s general fund. Also, because the cost of the election could exceed the additional revenue obtained, Colorado’s Constitution does not apply since the voters could not possibly have intended to produce such an absurd result. These would allow school districts to circumvent the dictates of TABOR, and thus the Colorado Constitution. So much for judicial ethics, popular sovereignty, and the rule of law.

The Deeper Problem with the “Dirty Dozen” Tax Increases

Increasing taxes during a recession is never a way to get the economy back on track. At a time when local businesses are struggling just to maintain the jobs they currently provide for our community, increasing the cost of doing business will only exacerbate a weak jobs market. While it is clear that the Democrats in control of our government would flunk an Economics 101 class at Palmer High, it is even clearer that they have undermined our state Constitution and convinced themselves that they are “leaders”. What has set our great nation apart in both the modern world and the historical world is that we are a nation of laws and not of people (this saying may be overused, but only because it is true). Being a nation of laws means that we are committed to rules for social order written on paper—documented to prevent their abuse by those who hold the reins of power. One of these laws is written into our state Constitution, commonly known as the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, or TaBoR. TaBoR prevents the state government from increasing taxes without a vote of the people of Colorado. This year, with the effects of the recession hitting our state budgets, our Legislators were confronted with more than a $1 billion shortfall. In such a situation, TaBoR and other Constitutional limitations makes it very difficult for our representatives to balance the budget. Unfortunately, the solution our Democratic leadership found was to bypass the intent of our Constitution and repeal a dozen tax exemptions. While it may have been critical to increase the revenue into our state coffers to continue to pay based on prior obligations, this increase came

at the expense of what is the very heart of our great nation—that is, it came at the expense of our nation of laws. In this shift away from a nation of laws, we have become more a nation of people, or rather a nation of power politicians. These politicians have decided that it is their job to solve problems regardless of a few words on a Constitution. Even if it was for a good end, such an approach to governing is a repudiation of all that is American. For politicians who can ignore laws for ends they deem good can ignore laws for any reason. The tragedy of the last decade of politics in our state, culminating with the arrogance of the Democrat control these last four years, is that said politicians are genuinely convinced that they are have been leaders. But true leaders, the stateswomen and statesmen we long for, would have honored the Constitution. They would have done this not because it was easy, but because it was right. Real leaders would have looked the people in the eye and articulated the problem within our budget and affirmed their commitment to solve it in a Constitutional way. We have not had leadership, we have had power politics. Any time that power subverts laws, we sacrifice our freedom. As Benjamin Franklin is reported to have said, “A nation that would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety and will lose both.” The deeper problem with the dirty dozen tax increases is that our Democrat majority has sacrificed our freedom for some financial safety and pats themselves on the back, deluded that it was leadership.

The Consequences of Not Letting a Serious Crisis go to Waste Col Jimmie H. Butler, USAF Ret Contributing Writer

From Day 1, the Obama administration has been All Politics, All the Time. The radical ideologues ignore the dangers to America of approaching every issue/problem with the question: What decision will benefit this administration the most? Obama Chief of Staff, Rahm Emmanuel, set the tone in late 2008: “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” For eighteen months, at least, President Obama has followed this Chicago-style political advice, and America is the lesser for it. Major crises aren’t resolved. They are extended until this administration and its allies can benefit politically, and in many cases financially at the expense of America’s taxpayers. The President childishly blames every crisis—unemployment, housing, health care, overspending, foreign policy, inadequate oversight—on George Bush instead of on the partisan, wasteful spending and policies of the Reid-Pelosi Congress that took over in 2006. Using the radical leftist tactic of big lies told repeatedly, Obama keeps pushing forward his agenda to change America forever. Although many of his lock-step followers in Congress have won their last reelection for some time to come, a fawning press has kept him above it all—until now. The administration’s incompetent response to Gulf oil spill disaster cannot be hidden and gives insight into how badly we’re being governed throughout the executive branch. America is reaping the consequences of the colossal mistake of electing a President who has been trained

as an agitator instead of one who has been trained as a leader. Ask yourself: On Day 1, would the Obama Administration have stopped the oil spill if that had been possible? I say the answer is No. On Day 1 the oil spill seemed a serious crisis made to order for further restricting American energy production and ushering in crippling energy taxes. Both goals are high on the radical liberal agenda for transforming America. By Day 50, however, serious flaws have surfaced in the Emmanuel Doctrine of Crisis Mismanagement. Now they desperately wish they could have plugged the hole on Day 1. Let’s compare great leaders and agitators. Leaders work hard to solve problems. Agitators increase problems and hope to gain from added difficulties inflicted upon their opponents. The military offers great training and experience in problem solving. Law school doesn’t compare. Real leaders quickly recognize the problem and muster people and resources to solve it. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Coast Guard was in on Day 1 pulling people off roofs while city and state politicians dithered. When this President finally was prodded into showing some kind of federal response after the explosion on the Deep Water Horizon, his first publicized reaction was to send in Justice Department lawyers. Obviously the President’s first priority was not to solve the problem and stop the gushing leak. Real leaders recognize there is a time and a place for ac-

countability, but in a crisis, fixing blame and accountability comes after the problem is solved. Secretary of Interior Salazar showed his own brand of leadership by declaring defi-

When only one person/entity has the expertise and equipment required to solve the problem, any real leader knows a boot on the neck isn’t the answer. Salazar is just one more ineffective player in an administration characterized by lots of talk and few effective solutions. Real leaders call on experts to help solve the problem, not to determine whose “ass to kick.” That adolescent attempt to sound like a tough, in-charge leader came across more like a line out of a “Revenge of the Nerds” script. Obviously this President needs better writers who aren’t as lacking in basic leadership skills as he is. Obviously America needs a better President who

has been trained as a leader and whose governing skills aren’t totally overshadowed by his ideology. Instead of 2010 being a year of recovery and growing employment—in the civilian sector where real jobs produce real prosperity—we face a growing domestic crisis of epic proportions. And that says nothing about the international failures ushered in by an apologetic foreign policy that also reflects an unquestionable lack of Presidential leadership. These serious crises result from an unprecedented radical liberal power grab aimed at undermining the Constitution and its protections for average American citizens. Emmanuel’s policies have finally gotten this administration into serious trouble, and the American voters must not let this serious crisis go to waste. We must rally in the November elections in 2010 and 2012 to deal a crushing blow to radical liberalism, so decades will pass before those corrupt and self-serving politicians can again threaten the liberties, prosperity, and freedom of ourselves and our children, so help us God. Leah Hotchkiss, Senior Staff Writer Independence Day has always held a special place in the hearts of Americans. This year, as our elected government carouses in a drunken stupor of ill-gained power, we the people should look to the foundations and history of our Republic to find guidance and wisdom in our struggle to restore our Constitutional Republic. George Washington delivered an address on September 17, 1796 and his words are especially poignant this July Fourth. He speaks directly to the issues of Freedom and Liberty in a way seldom heard today. In his speech, we can hear the humble voice of wisdom warning us and giving guidance. We now have few options left to us with which to forestall the eventual destruction of Public Liberty, but Mr. Wash-

If we are to keep factions and parties from proving fatal to our Republic, we must restore the voice of the individual citizen as the guide in political discourse. Washington expands upon the dangers of parties and factions within the state. He explains that the “spirit of party” is human nature and will always exist, but it is a danger that “is itself a frightful despotism” that will, at length, lead to a “more formal and permanent despotism.” This “spirit of party,” culminating in a chaotic partisan struggle, worms its way into the minds of a free people and changes them. “The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security, and repose in the absolute power of the individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.” Washington suggests that this kind of despotism, however far away it may seem, must be taken to heart and we would be “wise to discourage and refrain” from allowing factions and partisanship to dominate. Unfortunately, it may be too late to reduce their influence today, but Americans are starting to reject the ideas of partisan politics, and to fight for a return to our founding principles based on individual liberty. Washington also reminds us that although we may be vigilant in the guarding of the Constitution as a whole, we must remember that, “One method of assault may be to effect in the forms of the constitution, alterations which will impair the energy of the system, and thus to undermine what cannot be directly overthrown.” Today’s real danger lies in the interpretation of, and sometimes a complete disregard for, the Constitution by the government itself. Our current government most certainly changes the Constitution by small twists in order to undermine it. This must end, and if we achieve the goals of restoring the people’s voice to the public policy debate, rejecting the ideas of party victories at all costs, we will have come a long way to restoring our Public Liberty and safeguarding the Constitution. This Independence Day we would be wise to commit to the task of restoring the true ideas of freedom and liberty to America. I will leave you with the words of this great statesman so that one day, when our work is done, we too can say: “I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat, in which I promise myself to realize, without alloy, the sweet enjoyment of partaking, in the midst of my fellow citizens, the benign influence of good laws under a free government—the ever favorite object of my heart, and the happy reward, as I trust, of our mutual cares, labours and dangers.”

Have You Read the Law? Sid Huston, Contributing Writer

Eric Holder, Attorney General of the United States, was recently asked by Arizona Senator John McCain if he had read a law. The law in question was Arizona’s Immigration law S.B. 1070. Mr. Holder responded that he had heard much about it, had even commented on it, but, regretfully, had not read it. To the delight of conservatives, the embarrassing episode was replayed on news channels for days. Holder had spoken out against the law and even threatened to attack it legally—without having ever read it himself! Inherent in the Attorney General’s duty to enforce the law is to know the law, and Holder should be ashamed of his irresponsibility.

History records that the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution all refer to our country as being “under God.” Our founders established our country not as a mob-ruled democracy but as a “republic” ruled by laws based upon God’s law. Revisionism has steadily eroded this truth, and it is no longer taught in public schools. God shined on our founders as they affirmed Rutherford’s insight and embraced the principles stated in God’s Law. Derived from this sacred law are the concept of separation of powers and the pursuit of happiness, now woven into our national fabric. With wisdom, our founders established the law as king in our country, protecting us from would-be dictators and enabling us to live with the opportunities and joy that come with living Lex Rex. When our leaders shamefully confess that they haven’t read S.B. 1070, they are behaving in a Rex Lex fashion, making themselves the “king,” above the law. This arrogant behavior demonstrates nothing but disrespect toward our founders and disdain for God’s Law. After the English restoration, authorities burned Rutherford’s Lex Rex and cited him with high treason. Rutherford was rejected by the Church, lost his office, and his death only prevented his public execution. Samuel Rutherford was a man of God and a lover of freedom. Of him, England’s greatest preacher Charles Spurgeon wrote, “when we are dead and gone let the world know that Spurgeon held Rutherford’s letters to be the nearest thing to inspiration which can be found among the writings of men.” Who would have thought that Lex Rex would remain so relevant after four hundred years? Have you read the Law? No, not S.B. 1070—I am asking about God’s Law. Have you read the Law that leads men to real freedom? How many of the Ten Commandments can you list? Do you know where to find them in the Bible?* Do you know how God’s Law protects us and provide for us? Do you know who it leads us to? It is good to be in the company of Samuel Rutherford.

When our leaders shamefully confess that they haven’t read S.B. 1070, they are behaving in a Rex Lex fashion… Unfortunately, Mr. Holder was not the only appointed or elected leader who had been speaking out against the law when, asked point blank if he had read it, had to admit that he had not. S.B. 1070 is not an unreadable law; any ordinary citizen can find it online and read through its seventeen pages. In the seventeenth century, the world was blessed with a Scottish Minister and author named Samuel Rutherford, a Presbyterian theologian who would lead with his heart and ask the powers that be if they had “read the Law.” Of course, the Law of which he spoke was the Law of God. Rex Lex, or, “the King is the law,” was England’s philosophy of the day and didn’t sit well with Rutherford. His now-famous work, Lex Rex, or “the Law of God is the King,” refuted conventional wisdom and was a precursor to our U.S. Constitution. Lex Rex suggested that freedom could be acquired and maintained if people were ruled by law instead of by men. We should all be concerned about illegal aliens voting in the U.S. Voting is one of our greatest privileges of being an American. It is our given right to vote to elect our representatives and pass laws that control our day-to-day activities. Imagine illegals who have committed a crime being allowed to vote and play a part in molding our society. The word going around is that some politicians are pushing to give amnesty to illegals so that they can have their votes. By law they cannot vote until they become Americans, about five years. These politicians are not acting in the interest of America. Political correctness has become political madness. Whenever a group loses an argument they immediately cry “racial bias.” Whenever a person from a minority is stopped by the police it becomes “racial profiling.” Our country has given its citizens more rights than any other country. We have evolved in the belief that all men and women were created equal. This has been our hallmark. If intelligence was obtained that a person of Chinese origin was entering the U.S. to assemble of a weapon of mass destruction, would we not have our authorities check every Chinese person entering our country to capture the potential terrorist and protect the public? We know that most terrorists are Arabic Muslims. Is this racial profiling, or protection of us all?

The cost of illegal aliens in our country is $346 billion, according to the National Research Council. The cost of illegal aliens in Arizona is over $3 billion: $1.6 billion for education, $695 million for health care, $340 million for law enforcement and court costs, $86 million in welfare costs and $155 million in other costs. California spends $10 billion a year for the same support costs. These costs will not be reduced until the illegals are returned home. Many are rationalizing this situation because they believe we cannot deport 9 to12 million illegal aliens. So we have to live with it. Not so fast. We Americans can achieve anything we want to tackle and

Our guest workers program is designed to allow Americans to bring in temporary workers with specific skills where we have labor shortages. The workers come in, do the job, then return home. Companies are doing it legally today. We need to have a plan to resolve our immigration policy and have the 9 to 12 million illegal aliens returned to their countries, in a humane manner. We need a plan that encourages them to leave

America because of possible opportunities in the future. This should be tackled in two parts and each must be tackled now and not wait for a comprehensive plan. Each of these issues can readily be achieved by both parties because they need to be done now. These are detailed on the web site and future issues. The administrative part concerns our laws and representatives. The second part deals with the immigrants. An important aspect of this issue that our representatives must realize is that 70% of Americans including Democrats, Republicans, and Independents are in favor of immigration reform to include deportation. Our representatives must heed our expectations and come to grips with this issue that will bankrupt us if not dealt with quickly. There is much for all of us to absorb and evaluate. According to Senator Chris Dodd, the reason for the financial reform bill soon to be signed into law is “to create a sound economic foundation to grow jobs, protect consumers, rein in Wall Street, end ‘Too Big to Fail’, [and] prevent another financial crisis.” It will, in fact, do none of these. The real agenda is to strengthen the federal government’s control over what’s left

Protecting Consumers Many remember the television advertisements paid for by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce showing a butcher with his hands folded, standing in front of a big pile of meat. The voice-over said, “The economy has made it tough on this local butcher’s customers. So he lets some of them run a tab and pay the bill over time to make ends meet. But now Washington [in the name of consumer protection] wants to make it tougher [for him to offer such assistance because he is now in the “finance” business]. What this part of the bill does is allow the new agency (to be housed inside the Federal Reserve) to impose a welter of new burdens on all businesses that offer credit of one sort or another, including installment plans and layaways. President Obama supported this new agency with these soothing words from Big Brother: “From now on, every consumer will be empowered with the clear and concise information that you need to make financial decisions that are best for you.”

Connecticut, the richest state in the Union, recently saw its credit rating dropped from AA+ to AA. For those of you unfamiliar with the government’s credit rating, it is no different than a personal credit rating. The

If this all sounds familiar, it’s the same Congressional logic which brought about sub-prime mortgages and low document requirements that led to the current financial crisis when all the bad mortgage loans went belly-up. All thanks to the Community Reinvestment Act and Congress’ great wisdom in standing up for the consumer.

The state regulates daily life so much that my uncle, who owns a liquor store, cannot close his store for a family emergency without state approval. Vehicles are taxed as personal property each year in addition to registration and emissions fees. A state which once had no income tax, and prospered, has become one that taxes everything and everyone. If our states and those who run them thought of the government like a business, they would apply what I like to call the “Wal-Mart Principle” to their budgets. The first thing Connecticut should consider is that they are right next door to one of the most highly-taxed cities in the country, New York City. being financially broken by the taxes that New York state and the city charge. If Connecticut cut taxes, it would create an incentive to those in New York to move over the state line. Some businesses located in New York City now might even migrate to Connecticut. Undercut the competition and you will have an influx that you cannot contain. What all states, cities, and our federal government should learn from this situation is that citizens do not mind paying their fair share of taxes; but each time taxes are increased, revenue goes down because the people either find ways around the tax, give up what is being taxed, or move away (which avoids the tax completely). Every time the government adds or ups a tax, it is manipulating a market in a way that ultimately has dire consequences. Connecticut had pretty much the same deficit two years in a row, in spite of the implemented increases in taxes and fees. Why do the government bureaucrats not get this? Cut taxes, cut spending, and roll back some of the ridiculous welfare programs out there, and each state (and the country at large) will be better off. The lessons of the “richest” state in the country should be a warning sign to the rest of us that our government has gotten too big and is not responsive to the public at large.

Your free checking account might become a thing of the past. In the unfailing wisdom of Congress, another bill is gaining steam on Capitol Hill under the guise of “consumer protection” which will not benefit consumers in general but only those who exhibit bad behavior. You always thought banks gave you a free checking account because you are a good person whom the banks care for? Well, they do want your business, and the good ones work hard to serve you well, giving you the incentive to remain a loyal customer. But then you messed up one time on your checking account balance and you paid a big overdraft charge. You became angry at first, and then you realized you were the one who screwed up. But then you became angry again because your spouse saw the charge. Then you called the bank in a huff all hot and bothered by this “outrageous” fee. What you didn’t take into account is that you made a bargain with the bank: Keep your account balanced and set up direct deposit on your payroll, and, in return, the bank will not charge you any fees on your checking. The fees are covered by those who do not keep their account properly balanced. Why would anyone consider this unreasonable? If you screw up, you should pay a penalty. It’s a basic need for all human beings to work through the ups and downs in life which we create for ourselves. If we

Government, as one of our Founding Fathers said, is at best a necessary evil. It keeps civilization, well, civil, and prevents its self-destruction. At worst it is a malicious force that dehumanizes its citizens and strips them of their God-given rights as human beings. While we don’t live in a country that has completely fallen prey to its government, we are certainly losing our precious liberties one chip at a time. Imagine a time, say 500 years ago, when a man named Christopher Columbus departed the old world in search of a new world on the other side of the earth. The journey was surely a logistical challenge of epic proportions. The bravery required to embark on such a journey was indeed remarkable. The expense to fund such an excursion was no doubt a monumental undertaking.

This administration represents the fourth great attempt of the progressive movement in the last 100 years. Preceded by Presidents Wilson, Roosevelt (FDR), and Johnson, the Obama administration is attempting to recreate the country in their image, against the will of the people and against the intent of the Constitution. The federal government grew explosively after the 1920s and added many new organizations to consume the taxpayer’s dollar. The newly proposed organizations of the government are sadly too many to list here, but make the last 90 years look like child’s play. Total control of how you live your life is the agenda; a government employee to aid you in every chapter and verse of your life. Where would we be if we had maintained the integrity and intent of our Founding Fathers? We have slowly allowed human weakness to dictate how we are governed. This country was originally intended to be a land free from tyranny and oppression by an overbearing government. We truly deserve the leaders that we get and evil men will continue to thrive if good men choose to sit idly by and watch the destruction of mankind’s last best hope. Become educated, get involved and save your country.

So what was Columbus spared from? Imagine again if Columbus had to contend with modern-day bureaucracy and red tape. The Department of Transportation would certainly have to be involved. Who else would provide the rules and regulations necessary for a safe journey to the other side of the globe? A research team from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would have to conduct an environmental impact study to see how sailing ships would affect the ocean and the marine life in the path of the boat. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) would most certainly have to enforce quotas of different races and ethnicities to ensure a politically correct and fair mix of people, regardless of their ability to sail and navigate. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would need to have every corner and edge of the ship marked in reflective safety tape and emergency eye wash sinks, not to mention a list of hazardous materials and proper handling of such material. The above historical example shows what can happen when a country flirts with amnesty while struggling with economic, cultural, and military problems. despite the evidence that amnesty is not a wise policy, our government is already paving the way for its passage. Illegal immigrants today receive benefits that would astound most American citizens. They receive welfare payments, and often have children simply so that they can exploit the “anchor-baby” laws and remain in the country while collecting even larger welfare payments. On top of that mess, illegal immigrants’ income is seldom taxed. Illegal immigrants are not subject to assimilation as legal immigrants were throughout our nation’s history. Our country caters to them by offering services in their native language, instead of requiring them to learn English. They do not respect our laws concerning immigration, much less those concerning drugs, violence, and identity theft. Last session, the Colorado legislature even considered, once again, allowing children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition rates for college. “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” or amnesty, would instantly grant citizenship to all the illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States. While something needs to be done about illegal immigration, our overtaxed system simply cannot handle such an action. We must heed the fate of the Romans, who granted citizenship to barbarian immigrants without ensuring that they would be loyal to the Roman Empire. We must not grant citizenship to those who do not respect our country and do not consider themselves Americans, even though they want to have what our system provides. President Obama recently spoke of a “country without borders.” Unfortunately, our president seems to forget that this concept has been attempted in the past, and has failed miserably. The argument is, America is a land made up of immigrants, and that is true. However, those who came between 1850-1930 came here legally. Many, who come here today often are illegal. Here are stories of two immigrant families. They present a contrast in what, why, and how the 14th Amendment should be interpreted. Giovanni Battista Grosso was born on an American ship sailing from France to the United States in 1888. His family was from Luserna San Giovanni, east and south of Torino (Turin) Italy and they came legally. They were sponsored

auspices of the California Social Services Assistance office. They became housekeepers for wealthy women in Palos Verdes, Ca. and never continued their education beyond the six years they had received in their home country. Giovanni was not considered a citizen nor granted citizenship until he reached the age of 21. He had to study for and apply to be a citizen. He had to speak English and take a test. Lucy and her sister, however, didn’t want to be citizens. All they wanted were jobs and money to send home to support the family left behind in Guatemala where they wanted to return eventually. They also wanted enough money to bring two nephews illegally to the US. They were successful in the latter. A “coyote” brought the nephews through and made about twelve thousand dollars. Giovanni’s father, Francesco, like all Italians at the time donated a certain portion of their weekly salaries to a fund for use by members of the Italian American society. Francesco called upon the society in 1899 when he applied for funds to return to Italy to die. He had malignant miner’s black lung disease. The mining company would not pay for his return. His family eventually was expected to pay the society back, which they did. When Lucy’s husband injured himself by shooting paint through his hand with a paint gun, taxpayers took care of him. He paid $9.00 out of the ten thousand it took to make his hand whole, and that is all. According to the 14th Amendment Organization, www.14thamendment.us, the amendment is currently misinterpreted to give citizenship to children born in the United States of illegal alien parents. These “anchor babies” as they are called, can, when old enough, bring their extended family into the U.S. in order to obtain citizenship, or to work. Although some experts believe that a constitutional amendment would be necessary to remedy the misinterpretation, many believe that congressional action would be sufficient. You can make citizenship something to work for and cherish. Write your congress member demanding a return to the true intent of the mighty 14th Amendment.

Here are stories of two immigrant families that present a contrast in what, why, and how the 14th Amendment should be interpreted. by a mining company which offered jobs, housing and travel expenses. They went to live in Clear Creek, Co. in a two-room where the Italian community lived. Lucy Martinez and her sister, Rosa, from Guatemala, paid a “coyote” to sneak them across the border into Tijuana, Mexico. From there, they blithely rode across the US /Mexican border in a taxi as they had forged papers. They went to live in a house with eight other families. The girls shared a room in an eight-room house with one bath and 26 other ollegals. They didn’t have jobs or a sponsor but they got financial aid and Medi-Cal almost immediately from the state of California. Giovanni started working in the mines at age 6. He would lead the donkeys who hauled the oar wagons up and down the narrow paths that the miners used to walk into the depths of the mine. It was while he was leading a coal train that he stumbled and fell. The lead donkey stepped on his arm, breaking it. Doctors were hard to come by at the time, and those who would treat a dirty “wop” as they were called back then, were located closer to Denver. Francesco, his father, did the best he could for Giovanni with a stick and strips of torn bandages. The arm never healed correctly—a nerve had been damaged—and without medical treatment, Giovanni had no use of it for the rest of his life. However, Lucy got free health care through Medi-Cal and other state services when she broke her arm. Useless to his family as a wage earner, Giovanni was sent to school in the town of Cripple Creek and through education eventually became a real estate broker. Lucy and her sister found jobs under the

BP: Big Polluter Being Punished and Being Politicized Chuck Graybill, Contributing Writer BP: Big Polluter Already Convicted BP, formerly known as British Petroleum, formerly marketed as Beyond Petroleum, now infamous as Big Polluter is Being Punished and Being Politicized for apparently drilling for oil in compliance with and the permission of the United States government. Federal inspectors had recently cleared the drilling rig, its equipment, policies and procedures and its operators to continue drilling the Mississippi Canyon 252 well. According to the American Petroleum Institute, U.S. Outer Continental Shelf Oil Operations MUST comply with all local, state and federal regulations, including those of the U.S. Coast Guard and Mineral Management Service by obtaining 17 major federal permits and in compliance with 90 sets of federal and state regulations. However, BP is no choir boy when it comes to safety and playing by all the rules. In 2005, BP’s Texas refinery (acquired in its merger with Amoco) experienced a fire and explosion that killed 15 and injured 170. Numerous operating, work rule and safety issues were cited as contributing to the disaster. In BP’s defense, many were cited prior to its acquisition of the refinery, but to its detriment, BP obviously did not rectify previously cited problems once it acquired the refinery. In 2006, corroded BP pipeline led to the worst oil spill on Alaska’s North Slope. Now, before you call for the heads of BP officials as Obama has done, oil spills occur with great regularity in getting oil out of the ground and to market. Fourteen thousand tonnes (circa 280bpd) was spilled by the Shell/Nigeria JV last year with no mention by the international media. Similarly, an unnamed source said 100,000bpd spilled for a week in Nigeria, with no media scrutiny at all, but Exxon-Mobil was forced to

declare force majeure, relieving itself of its contractual obligations on its exports of Bonny Light, Nigeria’s benchmark crude. BP’s “bad luck” was a spill in U.S. territorial waters under the scrutiny of a hostile media and a self-aggrandizing Administration more concerned with affixing blame than fixing the problem. There is lots of money to be made funding clean-up efforts with no end in sight.

BP needs assistance, not bullying and grandstanding. It needs the red tape cut, not bureaucrats impeding attempts at progress Now is not the time to be puffing-out their proverbial chest in a show of false superiority and expertise for media consumption, but rather for partnering with a befuddled group of oil officials setting precedent every minute and with every failed attempt, in literally and figuratively, uncharted waters. Nothing like this has ever occurred in waters this deep, so there are no industry standard practices to follow. After this there will be, but for now there is only trial and error and documentation of lessons learned. BP needs assistance, not bullying and grandstanding. BP needs the “greeniacs” who are up-in-arms and demanding revenge to focus their ire on Washington for forcing oil industry drilling into the dangerous and unwieldy deep seas instead of on land in ANWR and the American West, where drilling is much safer but the government owns and controls all the resource rich land, by design and recent buying sprees. As with Three Mile Island we will not use this disaster as one of Obama’s famous teaching moments, but rather to impede or destroy true progress toward energy in-

dependence and a comprehensive energy policy. Work on thirty three drilling rigs was stopped with the six month moratorium on deep-sea drilling. What will be the fate of the remainder of the approximately 30% of our energy needs met via Gulf oil production? Has anyone stopped to consider if and when this oil spill will soon affect the world economy? With our government bashing BP at every opportunity, and its share price plummeting, what will happen to the pension funds and value of most British retirement accounts, since BP is a majority holding for most UK stock indexes? The British sovereign is already stressed and stretched beyond the fiscal woes of Greece. What if this becomes Britain’s tipping point? Can we be far behind? There will be a winner in this ecotastrophe; a major beneficiary will be all the litigators as they extract their usual pound of flesh in recompense for capitalizing on the woes and misfortune of others, while driving up the cost of everything in their wake. There is one other certain outcome of this disaster -- more regulations and laws, more bureaucrats to get in the way, more taxes to pay for laws which cannot legislate against human errors, poor judgment or equipment failure despite the best efforts of mere mortals. To err is human; to really screw things up takes a politician and our government! This Administration has proven it views every crisis as a means to score political points, not prove its worth or competence. As with Katrina, our government has proven itself incapable of handling the simplest logistical tasks, of making timely decisions, of accepting responsibility and of marshaling the forces necessary to defeat a pipeline rupture. How can we expect it to lead us and the world? How inadequate we must seem to our detractors. How embarrassing and demoralizing this must be for our allies, those that used to look up to us and rely on our assistance and leadership. How inept and aloof

we must seem while we attend fundraisers, always on the campaign trail instead of facing down the enemy deep beneath the surface of the sea. The world watches us flounder, unable to conquer a problem we and BP should have been prepared to resolve. But our unbridled arrogance and self-absorption told us this could never happen on our watch because we, BP and our government, were above the flaws, foibles and mistakes of mere mortals. How sad to hear talking points, rhetoric and propaganda, the same old song, when what we need is an anthem full of answers, faith, hope and charity, and change we can truly believe.

BP’s Oil Spill and Obama’s Blame Game Would the BP oil spill have occurred if oil companies could drill in coastal waters or on land? Probably not, but, if it did it would have been stopped by now. So, yes, I am blaming the federal government and greeniacs who forced oil companies into deep sea drilling as the only viable means of plying their trade in the USA. We have the technological know-how and experience to deal with shallow water and land-based calamities in oilfields. Deep sea drilling had a stellar safety and operations history prior to April 20. Americans grew complacent and then apathetic and allowed this President and Congress to be elected. Similarly BP got comfortable and complacent and failed to have plans and equipment at the ready to deal with disaster nearly a mile beneath the sea.

Shame on BP, but worse, shame on us for allowing this administration and its disgraceful media partners to use another crisis to sell its politburo politics and continue to destroy the free market. This administration cared more about saving face and receiving good press than it did about plugging the leak, otherwise it would not have forced its agenda and timetable.

Why do we keep listening to his uncaring, pompous and feeble attempts to grow into a job for which he has already proven to be totally ill-equipped to perform? He is not a leader and never will possess the skills and insight necessary to fulfill that role. As he feels no compulsion to listen to and respect our will or that of one of our staunchest allies (can you say Israel), we should feel no compulsion to entertain his lies, double-talk and distortions of current events, history and the Constitution. Does he despise Israel as much as us because it is another shining example of capitalism, or because Israel and its freedom-loving, unwavering people stand between Obama and his stated goal of forging an unbreakable bond with the Muslim world? Or is it because the Israelis are onto Obama’s game and are not buying one shekel’s worth of what he is trying to sell the rest of us and the world? It is very easy to blame BP, Bush and Cheney. It is very easy to blame conservatives for standing-up for the Constitution, inalienable rights and equal, not social justice, but it is not at all Presidential for Obama to absolve himself of any and all responsibility and accountability. We must now ask who is pulling Obama’s strings; who is his puppet-master. We see right through his blame game. Obama and the majority in Congress are to blame for practicing Chicagostyle thug politics against the express will of the majority of Americans. We want our Constitutional republic restored. We do not want any part of international treaties or sharia law. We do not want the United Nations, European Union or International Monetary Fund dictating our futures. We must convince them we will not acquiesce nor surrender control of our rights, freedoms and liberties to a global panel of any kind, or to global mandates and initiatives. We have watched Washington trample our Constitution for months. We have watched our freedoms disappear with each bill passed. We have bowed our heads in shame as our elected representatives abdicated their legislative responsibilities to God only knows who wrote those abominations (or should I say Obamanations) they call bills that none of them read or knew the contents thereof. Their abdication is tantamount to treason. Who will they blame for that?

Unspoken heros are speaking about their experiences as POW’s in World War II through an exhibit at the Colorado Springs Pioneers

Museum. The museum is hosting a World War II Prisoner of War (POW) touch screen exhibit. The opening date is July 17 at 10 a.m. It will run for 10 months. Expected at the premier of this exhibit will be some of the POW’s highlighted in the video vignettes. The museum hopes the exhibit will grow beyond anticipated special events with outreach panels that will bring in veterans, special ceremonies, programs, and hallway exhibits. Uniforms, pieces of equipment, and photos from WWII will be displayed at the beginning of the exhibit. Visitors are sure to enjoy rarely seen snapshots from cameras smuggled into the prison camps in Red Cross packages. The final exhibit will have a large flat panel TV with touch screen capability mounted on the wall where visitors can select from 10 or more short videos. Independent filmmaker Steve Mack is excited about this project as is Leah Witherow, the museum’s solo archivist. “This project is a great opportunity for civilians to get a clearer picture of the true sacrifice our men and women in uniform have made on behalf of our country,” Mack said. Rhonda Wootton, museum public programs coordinator, is putting together the special programs for the exhibit. The project’s subject is a rare look into what these brave men and women endured while in enemy captivity. Also included are some of the wives’ experiences. All veterans in this project are Colorado residents. Mack said one story highlighted is from a paratrooper who describes the end of the war when the Russians were advancing just after the Japanese surrendered. “Our OSS (Office of Strategic Services) had sent para-

troopers into Manchuria to rescue our high level officers who were POW’s” he said. This was done to prevent sensitive knowledge from being obtained by the Russians. Mack interviewed Jim Fore an Air Force pilot who spent several months in Buchenwald Concentration Camp until a German officer had him and the rest of the 170 Airmen moved to a POW camp. “Had word gotten out that a concentration camp was housing allied military it would have emboldened all our military to fight until death if you knew that was where your fate was,” Mack said. Other interviewees include a Battle of the Bulge veteran and one who helped dig the tunnels for “The Great Escape” from which a movie of the same name was made. “What got them through the mental anguish of being a POW was so often the positive thought that I am going to get out of here and go home. So many have this ‘positiveness’ and it is so infectious. Most lost half their body weight and were starving when rescued,” Mack said. “Imagine the fear of not knowing if you’ll live when you see your colleagues being shot right in front of you and you’re being told you’re also going to be shot. Then you’re brought out the next day and you’re not [shot]. These guys have post traumatic stress... severely,” Thousands of men didn’t wait for the U.S. entrance into the war on December 7, 1941. A large number of Americans joined the Canadian Air Force to the point that it was loosely considered the “North American Air Force.” “To be able to recognize a lot of these sacrifices is for me, an honor,” Mack said. Hometown Hero Henry “Duke” Boswell Brad Kerstetter, Senior Staff Writer The 82nd Airborne jumped into the unknown over France on June 6, 1944, putting their lives on the line to slip behind enemy lines. They fought knowing that Allied troops landing at Normandy were depending on them to keep German reinforcements from reaching the beach. Among those brave soldiers was Henry “Duke” Boswell, a member of the 505th Parachute regiment. The 505th jumped at 0100 hours, five and a half hours before the troops where scheduled the land on the beach. At 0430 they liberated the town of Sainte-MereEglise, the first village to be liberated on the continent. According to Boswell, “our job was to grab the bridges and crossroads and keep German reinforcements from getting to the beach.” The 505th fought from the time they landed until the next day when troops from the beach finally arrived at Sainte-Mere-Eglise. “When they did reach us, we joined the front and kept going,” Boswell recalled, “we fought for 33 days without relief.” Boswell considered himself a veteran by the time he jumped on D-day. He joined the army when he was 16, and soon after signed up for the airborne because he could make $50 a month, significantly more than the average soldier. His first combat jump was into Sicily, where his regiment led the

assault. He also took part in the invasion of Italy in 1943. After leading the charge on D-day, Boswell’s regiment had a short reprieve in England while they picked up new men and supplies before being flown 60 miles behind enemy lines in Holland. All told, Boswell made four combat jumps, the last one into Holland. “The 505th was the only regiment that made four combat jumps in Europe,” Boswell pointed out. Boswell did not jump out of a plane for the remainder of the war. “We jumped off a truck at The Battle of the Bulge,” he said, smiling. After participating in The Battle of the Bulge, The 505th crossed into Germany. “We fought until we met the Russians, and then the war was over.” Five years later, Boswell found himself in Korea. While serving there he was hit by a mortar shell, which cost him several fingers and broke both his legs and arms. “I came out with solid casts on both arms and both legs,” he said. He spent the next eight months in the hospital. Boswell remained on active duty and served at Fort Benning, Georgia at the infantry school, in Hawaii for three years and at Fort Carson for five more before retiring from the service. He spent the next 20 years as a teacher. “I asked for combat pay a couple of times but they would not give it to me,” Boswell joked.

Vets Commemorate D-Day Brad Kerstetter, Senior Staff Writer

Veterans from World War II and Korea gathered together at the Peak Grill in Colorado Springs June 7th to commemorate the DDay invasion, the anniversary of which was the day before. The gathering took place as a monthly activity for veterans in the Colorado Springs area. Every second Tuesday of the month, veterans are invited to join their brothers in arms and share stories about their experiences. “We are all brothers, everyone is a friend that you meet and we all had some of the

A veteran who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor was also present at the event. Bill Browning was a sailor on a United States cargo ship when the Japanese attacked the harbor. His ship would have been inside the harbor during the attack if it had not been running behind schedule. As it turned out, Browning’s ship was only hit by machinegun fire from several strafing runs. Chicago Shootings and McDonald v. City of Chicago Bob Adelmann, Featured Writer

When it was learned that more than 50 people were shot, some fatally, over Fathers Day weekend in the poorer sections of Chicago, it didn’t even make the front page of Chicago newspapers. As ABC News put it, “Most of the weekend shootings took place in poor neighborhoods on the city’s south and west sides. Those areas are away from downtown and tourist attractions, perhaps one reason much of the city seemed to shrug its shoulders at the violence.” Jim O’Shea, editor of Chicago News Cooperative, said, “I think people just say, ‘Ah, it’s a bunch of gang bangers shooting each other.’” Police and other officials put the blame on gangs and easy access to guns despite one of the strictest bans on handguns in the country. It is that very ban that is being challenged in a Supreme Court case, McDonald v. City of Chicago, with a decision to be announced very soon. Alan Gottlieb, executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, one of the plaintiffs in the case, was quick to make the point that: Chicago has become a slaughterhouse where defenseless victims are terrorized by armed thugs who have taken full advantage of an unarmed populace. Responding to questions about the level of violence in Chicago, police say that violent crime in Chicago is down 11 percent so far this year, despite the weekend rampage. And Mayor Daley remains adamant that his gun controls work to reduce crime. Daley’s recent crude remarks to a reporter questioning the effectiveness of the city’s gun ban earned him few credibility points. After those remarks, Daley said, “To me, any gun taken off [the street] saves thousands of lives in America. I really believe that. I don’t care what you tell me.” Even among his supporters, Daley’s noisy and rude remarks are causing some to question his effectiveness in his war

Alinsky-Style Hipocrisy Fifth in a series on Saul Alinksy’s Rules for Radicals An American Patriot, Contributing Writer Have you noticed as civility has decreased and lying has increased, American politics Alinsky-style seems characterized by hypocrisy, as well? That could be a normal consequence of America having made poor choices in selecting Alinsky-ite politicians for whom truth is “relative and changing.” However, such hypocrisy is rampant as well in journalism, academia, and the legal system. All are American institutions targeted for infiltration by Alinsky as he transformed his Chicago-area community agitation into a nationwide quest for power. To counter such hypocrisy, we need to understand where it comes from and how it is used against America and the American people. Alinsky’s 4th Rule in his Tactics chapter is: “Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.” I suspect Alinsky found delight in this rule. He further explains: “You can kill them with this one, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.” We are a nation of laws, and we can imagine the chaos if everyone chose to disobey red lights that make driving safer for all. So there is merit in a civil society where people abide by reasonable rules/laws set by democratically elected governments. However, Alinsky doesn’t call for making everyone live up to the rules. Only his enemies. Thus he has set the Alinsky-ite foundation for the overwhelming hypocrisy average Americans are fed up with. Our constitutionally guaranteed free press is our first line of defense against lying politicians and the hypocrisy of what has become a self-perpetuating, elitist ruling class. Expose the self–serving liars for who and what they are, and shame them into not pursuing policies bad for America. Unfortunately much of America’s traditional media has become enablers of the hypocrites by slanting news to favor radical Alinsky-ites. When the powerful chairman of an important tax-writing committee obviously has been evading taxes, his colleagues demand no rush to judgment. Members of the media hardly report the story and somehow fail to associate his name with the D that identifies his political party. If such a violator has an R with his or her name, these same people will immediately declare the person guilty, demand he/she be removed from office, and pound the story day-after-day to inflict the maximum damage to the person and party. If you have that magic D by your name, you can keep tens of thousands of dollars in brib-

ery cash in your freezer—perhaps even using National Guard troops to help you retrieve such loot after Hurricane Katrina floods your neighborhood—and Madam Speaker will tolerate your presence in the House of Representatives until the justice system finally throws you in jail. Remember Speaker Pelosi’s pledge to clean up corruption in the House of Representatives? Powerful liberal politicians make deriding, sexist comments to or about women— conservative women in particular—and the mainstream media tries hard not to take notice. The National Organization for Women shows no concern about such affronts to women, just as they were never concerned about the flagrant abuse of women in countries American forces fought to liberate over the last couple of decades. The race of a perpetrator of a hate crime is reported only if it advances the radical agenda. Tea Party rallies are characterized as violence ready to happen while Alinsky-ite violence on America’s streets has gone under-reported for decades. The concept of political correctness tries to expand the rules Alinsky-ites want to force their enemies to live up to. Hypocrisy is the PC movement’s foundation. Political correctness seems one step short of George Orwell’s Thought Police in 1984. The concept should be ridiculed routinely in the press. Instead reporters and columnists often parrot PC hypocrisy. Our judicial system is our last line of defense against hypocrisy that repeatedly attempts to undermine freedoms and liberties established in our Constitution. Alinsky-ites can’t thrive and overthrow our way of life directly through a frontal assault on the Constitution, so they’ve worked hard to infiltrate the judicial system. After all, the Constitution isn’t really what the nine top jurists in the land say it is. It’s what only five decide it is. Thus, Alinsky-ites continually press for reinterpretations of what the Bill of Rights declares on such clearly stated issues as citizens’ rights to bear arms and the limitations on the government’s right to make laws limiting freedom of religion. So Alinsky-ites keep pressure on Americans to live up to our Constitutionallybased book of rules—while they work hard to rewrite that book of rules. And within their framework of hypocrisy and lies, Alinsky-ites have no compulsion to live up to those same Constitutional rules when such rules slow their continued push to change America forever. The Alinsky-ites must be stopped!

An excellent example of informed, vigilant citizenship is seen in a man by the name of Horatio Bunce. Bunce was a farmer in the congressional district of Tennessee represented by Davy Crockett (who served in Congress from 1827 to 1831). Crockett tells the following story: While he was preparing for reelection, the two men met, whereupon Bunce announced that he could not vote for him again because Crockett had voted for a “bill to appropriate $20,000 to some sufferers by a fire in Georgetown.” Bunce felt strongly that Congress had no constitutional authority to appropriate public money for charity. Bunce continued, “It is not the amount, colonel, that I complain of; it is the principle…If you had the right to give anything, you had as much right to give $20,000,000 as $20,000. If you have the right to give to one, you have the right to give to all… You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other. No, colonel, Congress has no right to give to charity.” Interestingly, Crockett was “fully convinced” that Bunce was right, and he vowed to never vote for another unconstitutional law. The time came when Crockett had an opportunity to keep his promise. A bill was taken up in the House of Representatives to appropriate money “for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer.” This time, Crockett arose: “Mr. Speaker…I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it. We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as

we please; but as members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money.” The bill was defeated. The story of Horatio Bunce is inspiring because it shows the important effect that informed, vigilant citizenship can have. We need to call upon the Horatio in ourselves. But as inspiring as it is, that was then, only 53 years after the Revolution, when the Constitution was still held in high regard and it was reasonable to attempt to preserve liberty by holding elected officials to its constraints. This is now, 181 years after Bunce, when the Constitution is not held in such high regard by those sworn to defend it and in fact is seen as a serious obstacle to the progressive march toward statism. At a recent panel discussion at the University of Denver, talk-show host Dennis Prager said that the greatest threat facing America today is that we have not passed on to this generation what it means to be an American—we have not been taught

Even if the Supreme Court decides in favor of McDonald, “a great pitfall threatens [the case]…for the court could end up deciding that, although “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” does apply to the States, it is merely a so-called ‘individual’ right…and therefore subject to whatever ‘regulations’ of State and local

He said that this “goes back 100 years, to John Dewey, to the importation of European professors, and to our universities.” This means that today’s social environment is very different from our historical past. We must reclaim our history and our schools. Our task of vigilance today is one not of just preserving freedom, but of restoring what has been lost. While it is possible that the American Experiment may yet fail, it is encouraging that after generations of having been asleep at the wheel of vigilance, the Horatio within us is rising up. Hayek, the economic primer used extensively by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, is again exploding in popularity after a brief TV pitch by Glenn Beck. Amazon.com (now forced out of Colorado by partisan Democrat tax policies) reported that they have a three month backorder, and kindly requested that Glenn provide at least a little warning before he suggests that his viewers add another political classic to their reading libraries. Imagine! Conservatives actually reading an economic history written by a Nobel Laureate other than Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, or Yasser Arafat. In our post-cognitive world, we must be truly reactionary to draw our history from a time when Hayek’s brilliant scholarship and reason merged to discern

Hayek showed that the natural path of socialism, since the redistribution of wealth and the elimination of the middle class don’t work, is to attempt to apply it more and more forcefully. Most liberals in Germany during Hayek’s time became revolted at the anti-liberal agenda of National Socialism’s central control and police state regimentation, pervasive and terrifying intrusion into privacy and every social and political aspect of society, takeovers of private enterprise, rationing of goods and services, and a culture of death as a political solution. Although too late to save the Germans, Hayek saw an opportunity for the citizens of Britain to take warning, and reverse their dangerous parallel course. Now faced with some of those familiar trends in America, we should heed Hayek’s warnings too. American liberals should watch for the warning signs that their movement has reached a new edge, and might not be as liberal as they once thought. Would a liberal government dictate the means of production and the allocation of every major resource of your family budget; your house (96% of loans are controlled by the failing government-controlled Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac); your car (through government-controlled takeovers of Detroit auto companies); your medical care (through Obama-Control of medicine); your jobs (through government activism to pander to illegal aliens rather than enforce the law to protect American jobs); your education (through union-dominated federal bureaucrats); and your energy bills (through unconstitutional presidential declarations over oil and gas production, the creation of carbon taxes, and the fraudulent scare tactics of global warming)? Would a liberal government continue to shift more power to highlypaid centralized bureaucrats (federal employees now make almost twice as much as their private counterparts) through confiscatory taxes and deficit spending, while unemployment and private job losses continue to soar? Would a liberal government side against Israel to appease the agenda of Middle Eastern extremists, or say that Jews should return to Germany as one famous liberal reporter recently suggested? A Black Power advocate of the 1960’s once said to America, “You better watch out if anyone continues to violate the rights of black Americans!” Certainly on that point he was right. American liberals should watch for the warning signs that their movement has reached a new edge, and might not be as liberal as they once thought. and define the true nature and danger of Nazi Germany, and to warn against the same trends in the British socialist movement. Their false label of “liberal” was so overused that by the 1940’s even Hayek admitted that it was useless and unsalvageable as an accurate term for almost anything. Since then, conservative, progressive, liberty, the common good, and many other fine political terms have been hijacked into marketing labels to mask totally false agenda. Even science and art have been redefined to mask leftist political agenda on the destructive and fraudulent agenda of global warming and anything-goes pornographic freedom. Today, even liberalism isn’t leftist enough for most socialists to claim as their home turf. Progressive is the latest term of abuse. On July 4, 1776, 56 courageous and audacious men initiated a conflagration that illuminated the whole world in a kaleidoscope of pyrotechnic, iridescent colors. This unprecedented event meant that, for the first time in recorded history, men declared their right to separate themselves from a government that did not acknowledge nor defend the unalienable rights they possessed as individual human beings. These rights included the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. These men further stated “…That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed.” The signing of this Declaration of Independence from Great Britain was indeed the culmination of mankind’s elusive quest for liberty. The Tree of Liberty first took root in the Greco/Roman world of antiquity. The monotheistic values of individual responsibility from Jud e o / C h r i s t i an ethics provided the fecund soil. It was seeded, however, as far back as the time of the Hammurabi Code and the Epic of Gilgamesh of ancient Babylon approximately 3,800 years ago. This coincided with man’s first recorded stirrings of interest in justice and the rule of law. The code actually provided for state-enforced and guaranteed contracts between citizens. Early governments were authoritarian and most of the residents were slaves. Historians writing of those early years believe the Greeks of 2,500 years ago developed the beginning concepts of individual rights. The Greek philosopher Aristotle stands as a colossus of western intellectual tradition. The influence of his rational and exhaustive study of nature and human society exceeds his contemporaries and was largely responsible for the European periods of great creativity: the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Specifically, through his writings, he taught the Founders of the many facets of democracy and constitutional government. Cicero, a Roman stoic of 2,100 years ago and familiar to the learned signers, advocated public virtue, honor and justice in a Republican form of government. It was too late for him. Despite his eminent oratorical and writing skills, he was addressing himself to a world descending into a vortex of iniquity, corruption and totalitarianism and was assassinated as a threat to that new order. These early ideas of liberty were lost to the West until Thomas Aquinas, who reintroduced them to a Church-dominated medieval Europe around the 13th century. During this time the thoughts of Aristotle, Virgil the Roman epic poet, Cicero and others were exposed to the scholars of the era. The British Magna Charta of 1215 forced a king to respect the inherent rights of his realm’s nobles. Over 400 years later,

the Crown made further concessions to its citizens: the Petition of Right (1628), the Habeas Corpus Act (1679), and the British Bill of Rights (1689). From these concessions the colonists concluded that Englishmen had certain rights to be respected anywhere in the world. These included trial by jury, legal due process, no taxation without representation, and the right to be secure in one’s home from unlawful entry by the State. Along the way were exceptional thinkers. Algernon Sydney was executed as a traitor for attacking the idea of absolute monarchy and defending republican assumptions in his Discourses Concerning Government (1698). Other thinkers, writers, and commentators of British law at that time included Edward Coke; William Blackstone, known for his Commentaries on the Laws of England; and John Locke, for his breakthrough ideas on liberty in his Two Treatises of Government. Locke believed that all men by nature were free and equal,

After 3,600 years, the Founders’ intellectual and moral palette was at last complete. Celebrate and ask the question: are we still the people who would not tolerate a government refusing to secure our unalienable rights? Instead, we have been offered a diabolical exchange: surrender and compromise these inherent individual rights for faux “social” rights like housing, education, jobs, and healthcare defined, packaged, and granted by our leaders; our self-appointed “betters.” Do we even recognize the difference? Are we willing to study, labor, and fight to ensure our unique legacy? The answer to those questions is the same one that Benjamin Franklin gave a woman who asked, as he left the Constitutional Convention in 1787, “What kind of government have you given us?” He answered, “a Republic, if you can keep it.” Whether we can remains an open question. As a child of Portuguese immigrants with limited formal education and means, Richard perceived in them a strong work ethic plus a deep and abiding love of this country and its incomparable opportunities. In addition to a love of classical music, he became strongly drawn to the ethics of fair play and honorable competition in sports. He has been intensely interested in politics and economics for many years, finding the current state of affairs cause for concern.

Al Maurer, Featured Writer July 4th: The most American of all holidays, our national day, the day we celebrate our liberty and independence. Before we started celebrating Independence Day, nations did not have national days on which they celebrated their founding. The United Kingdom still does not—they celebrate the queen’s birthday. This year, July 4th makes me think about our national colors in the context of the Revolution of 1776 and the revolution going on today. In 1776, the British were known as the “Redcoats” for their red uniforms. The Patriots on the other hand wore whatever they could get; blue and brown predominated. The blue came from the fact that when the Americans were first organized into units to fight for the British in the French and Indian War, they were given blue uniforms. Not good enough to be clothed like the British regulars, you see. When the French joined the revolution on our side, they wore predominately white uniforms. There you have it: a struggle involving the red, white and blue. The blue and white prevailed and we gained our independence. Following the French revolution of 1789, it was again the blue and white aligned against the red of England (and others). The old French Army that had helped us, still wearing white, was distrusted by the revolutionaries, wearing the blue of the National Guards. Yet they needed each other to save their country from the coalition of European powers arrayed against them. The steadiness and training of the whites was combined with the élan of the blues. France was saved. Today those colors have been reversed. Although I was told by RedState’s Eric Erickson that the Associated Press originally assigned the colors blue and red based simply on whether a party was incumbent or challenging, respectively. From 2000 on, red has been associated with the GOP and blue with the Democrats. That’s

odd considering the lurch to the left by the Democrats and the association of red with Communist revolutionaries: it ought to be the other way around. (That’s one of the reasons I named my blog Reclaim the Blue.) What happened to the white? We sometimes use purple to indicate a state that is neither clearly red nor blue and we use green to represent environmentalists. Hardly ever do we hear white mentioned, so let me coin a use “White for Independents.” White because it signifies lack of color—perhaps mostly lack of commitment to a party. Even in the American Revolution, there was a portion of the population—perhaps one – third—who favored neither the king nor the Patriots. It would be a mistake to think that Independents today don’t have strongly-held beliefs—it’s just that they don’t align those beliefs with a party. There’s another thing about color going around that needs to be said. There are those on the left who seek to divide us not by the color of our party or our convictions, but by the color of our skin. They try to link race and color to the way we vote or to force us to vote in ways that support them. They know they can’t win on their Marxist ideology so they try to make the conversation about race and class. They seek to divide us. Our national motto is “E Pluribus Unum: Out of many, one.” We must remain united. Today we are in the midst of another great revolution—one as significant as 1776 or 1860. We need the adherents of all of our colors—red, white and blue—to unite as one and, thereby, eliminate the distinction. Only by doing so will we preserve our liberty for ourselves and for the future. Abraham Lincoln closed the Gettysburg Address with a call to action that applies today. We must unite red, white and blue under the banner of liberty “… that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom— and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

There are times and events in the affairs of men that so profoundly mark the destinies of those involved that only the most ardent deniers fail see the hand of Divine Providence. July 9, 1755 was such a time, and young Colonel George Washington, aide to Major General Braddock, was such a man. The battle for Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War bears the indelible and undeniable mark of God’s hand upon the one who would be used mightily in the birth of America. (The following details and observations on the battle for Fort Duquesne are from The Real George Washington, National Center for Constitutional Studies, pp. 44-49.) The battle itself was a disastrous defeat for the British, yet one bright star shined resolutely through the darkness. Even as many British regulars dropped their weapons and fled, and most of the other officers lay wounded, including Braddock, Colonel Washington rode all over the battlefield, barking out orders in a valiant attempt to rally the troops. By the time the battle was over, the enemy had shot two horses out from under Colonel Washington, and his hat and coat bore the evidence of four bullet holes. Yet, Washington, himself, was untouched. Upon later reflection, Washington concluded that he had remained unscathed only by “the miraculous care of Providence, that protected me beyond all human expectation.” He was not the only one who drew this conclusion. Fifteen years later, an indian chief who had witnessed the battle made this amazing observation and prediction: “The Great Spirit protects that man, and guides his destinies—he will become the chief of nations, and a people yet unborn will hail him as the founder of a mighty empire.” The rest, as they say, is history. General Washington would later lead the colonial forces to one of the most improbable victories in history, as America gained its independence from arguably the most powerful empire that ever ruled on earth. Later still, the founders forged the miracle of the Constitution, and the birth of America as a free republic was complete. No one during those years of birth pangs could legitimately deny the hand of God in the process, as Benjamin Franklin put it so eloquently while addressing the Constitutional Convention of 1787: “In

the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. … God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” So to what end has the Lord built this house? Has any good come from those divinely-governed affairs of the late 1700s? Sadly, all too many in high levels of government and education say “no.” These deniers try to use some of the dark times in our history, and there were dark times, to negate any good accomplished by America. And more diabolical yet, these deniers seek to turn the hearts of our children from the truth of America’s goodness. As we celebrate our 234th birthday, let’s entertain no doubt that America has been used mightily for the righteous cause of liberty. There are no greater examples of

Who can deny that, apart from America’s involvement, the outcomes would have been far different? Evil defeated, and the world made safe for democracy, as Woodrow Wilson put it. Yet there was a far more profound outcome at the hand of God—the rebirth of Israel. Great evil gave birth to even greater good. World War I secured the land, and World War II secured the hearts of the Western world for the Jewish people (at least for a time). Space prohibits a detailed account of Israel’s miraculous rebirth, but that tiny nation’s continued existence, despite overwhelming odds, is undeniable evidence for Divine Providence. In these tumultuous times, we should remember God’s promise to Abraham, Israel’s founding father: “I will bless them that bless you, and curse him that curses you.” America has, indeed, been blessed and will do well to stand faithfully with our “brother,” the only true democracy in that region. Even more importantly, Americans must again gratefully acknowledge the hand of God in our affairs. Not one of the 56 men who signed their names to the Declaration of Independence could begin to comprehend the impact of this action. Nor could they surmise what the future held for them, their families and the new nation they had birthed, except for one prominent and verifiable truth: all of the signers committed the reprehensible act of treason against their mother country England and King George. They were quite aware that the British would attempt to use all means possible to capture them, possibly torture them, and most certainly put them to death for being traitors. The signers knew that they had picked a fight with the most powerful empire in the world.

South Carolinian Thomas Lynch was arrested in 1780 and held on board a British prison ship for over a year. While imprisoned, his home and plantation were sacked and his slaves were stolen and reportedly sold to plantations in Jamaica. Twelve other signers also had their homes ransacked and burned, most because of the “scorched earth” policy adopted by the British in the South, an effort to gain the support of southern loyalists. John Hart left his ill wife’s bedside with the British approaching his home, and their 13 children fled for their lives as his fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. Hart spent over a year hiding in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children gone. A few weeks later he died of exhaustion and, some say, a broken heart. Signers Morris, Livingston and Lewis suffered similar fates. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, lost his ships at sea to the British Navy. After making several bad investments, he was forced to sell his home and properties to pay his debts. Colonel Thomas McKean of Delaware, serving in the Continental Congress without pay, was continuously hounded by the British and was forced to constantly move his family. Two of Abraham Clark’s sons were captured by the British during the war, and John Witherspoon’s son was killed at the Battle of Germantown. The signers were the ordinary men of their time: merchants, lawyers, farmers, planters and slave owners. Some were highly-educated, some were respected leaders in their communities, but all were willing to lose everything, including their lives, to preserve liberty and protect the country they loved. As we celebrate Independence Day this July 4th, please think of the signers and how they suffered hardships and made sacrifices in an effort to bring forth a new Republic, the United States of America. In addition, ask yourself what you would be willing to sacrifice today to keep and preserve liberty in America.

All were willing to lose everything, including their lives, to preserve liberty and protect the country they loved. Prior to signing the Declaration, Benjamin Franklin reportedly said, “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.” As the ink quickly dried on the virtuous document that Americans now hold so dear, the signers’ fates were sealed to gain liberty for the Colonies at all cost. Numerous historical accounts gathered from biographies of those who signed the Declaration of Independence paint a vivid picture of the sacrifices they made for the price of liberty and freedom. Seventeen signers fought in the Revolutionary War: Thomas Nelson was a colonel in the Second Virginia Regiment and William Whipple served with the New Hampshire militia; Oliver Wolcott fought with Connecticut regiments and commanded a brigade of militia; Caesar Rodney and John Hancock were Major Generals in the Delaware and Massachusetts militias, respectively. Five signers were captured and imprisoned by the British: Richard Stockton of New Jersey is said to have been imprisoned solely for having signed the Declaration of Independence and died within a year of his release; Colonel George Walton was wounded and captured at the Battle of Savannah and then exchanged for a British naval captain; Captains Edward Rutledge, Thomas Heyward, and Arthur Middleton were all captured during the siege of Charleston in 1780 and exchanged a year later. Their properties were looted while they were imprisoned, as was the case for many patriots and other signers such as Clymer, Walton, Hooper and Gwinnett.

Our National Anthem is Born “Thomas Paine,” Contributing Writer One thousand soldiers and Maryland militia members huddled behind the earthen and brick walls of Ft. McHenry, situated on the Chesapeake Bay to protect Baltimore’s harbor. It was a cool September morning in 1814, and the dark clouds threatened rain. Every soldier, whether regular or militia, knew they were about to face off against the greatest military power in the world. Tension mounted as ships flying the British flag entered the harbor. The United States, a country barely thirty years old, had been fighting for over two years in a second war with her former mother country during the War of 1812. The performance of the U.S. Army had been rather dismal up to that point, having suffered a series of defeats. The British had captured the fledgling nation’s capital, Washington, DC and burned the newlybuilt White House almost to the ground. Although Washington itself was of no strategic significance, the sacking of the capital was an embarrassment to the nation and greatly demoralized the troops. President James Madison, his cabinet, members of Congress and the Supreme Court had fled the city and were trying to run the country—and the war—while scattered throughout the region. Adding to the magnitude of their situation was the knowledge that the British had defeated the French in a war they had been fighting simultaneously with their war against America. Now the British were able to divert all their attention—including soldiers, ships, weapons, cannons, supplies, and other resources— against the Americans. Baltimore was a lucrative target for the British, because it was an unofficial naval

station, the site of naval ship construction, and home to numerous privateers who had been harassing British sea commerce. To capture Baltimore, the British and their American counterparts knew they would have to capture Ft. McHenry first because of its strategic placement.

The British planned a two-pronged attack: one over land against the city, and one by sea against Ft. McHenry. Once the fort was seized, the British fleet would move into the harbor and support the land attack against Baltimore by firing on the city and the troops defending it. Major George Armistead commanded the troops at Ft. McHenry. Knowing an attack on the fort was impending, Armistead ordered a new American flag from a local Baltimore woman, Mary Pickersgill. He specified the flag should be, “So large that the British would have no difficulty seeing it from a distance.” Mary and several others sewed the flag for weeks, resulting in a fifteen star, fifteen stripe banner. In 1814 the flag had one star and one stripe for each state in the union, of which there were fifteen at that time. The finished flag measured 30 feet by 42 feet, and once the battle commenced

it became – and remains – the largest flag ever flown in battle by an American force. The British would certainly “have no difficulty seeing it from a distance.” Current law specifies military garrison flags be much smaller. The British fleet sailed into Baltimore Harbor and began bombarding the fort with Congreve rockets and mortars. Congreve rockets looked like very large modern-day bottle rockets. They proved to be very inaccurate, but the British tactic was to fire very large numbers of them against closely-packed infantry formations or a stationary fort. The mass effect could be devastating. Major Armistead and his men endured the bombardment for twenty-five hours, firing back with their own cannons whenever a British ship ventured within range. Some estimates say that between 1500 and 1800 rockets and mortar bombs were fired, but damage was light because Major Armistead had upgraded the fortifications beforehand. After nightfall the bombardment continued, and the British attempted to land troops under cover of darkness. Their mission was to sneak past Ft. McHenry and attack Baltimore, thereby drawing the city’s defenders away from the main ground attack. Astute cannoneers under Major Armistead spotted the landing craft and opened fire. Their heavy cannon fire caused the British to retreat back to their ships, thus stopping an additional threat to the defenders in Baltimore. At sunrise, the British saw the large banner flying over Ft. McHenry, and realized their attack had been a failure. They

left the harbor without having seized Baltimore or the fort. An American also saw the banner flying that morning. Lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key was being held on a British ship in the harbor. He had witnessed the entire battle from the British perspective, and when he awoke to Major Armistead’s flag flying over Ft. McHenry he was inspired to write a poem entitled, “The Defense of Fort McHenry.” It was later set to the tune of a popular drinking song and renamed “The Star Spangled Banner.” Although immediately popular, it was not adopted as our national anthem until 1931. For those who do not know the story behind the words, Key’s poem now makes sense: Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there

Those few lines make it clear our anthem was born in battle. It is vital to our nation’s survival to remember the cost these men paid for our freedom, and that now we have men and women in two war zones doing the same. For the first time in human history—acknowledging the historical antecedents in Greek democracy and the Roman Republic, but nonetheless a radical departure from all that had come before—a nation

Are we, then, arrived at the need for a new Declaration of Independence against our grasping, grabbing, ever-growing government? Nay, say I, for we do still maintain the Right, and the power as Citizens to bring our out-of-control government back to heel. We The People have allowed our government—through inattention and inactivity—to ignore the limits we have set for its power and authority. Those limits are specified in another exceptional founding document—the U.S. Constitution—which lists (“enumerates”) the “just Powers” of our Federal government, just as our respective state Constitutions list the powers and authority of the state governments. Government transgressions against the Constitution (at either the Federal or state levels) are an assault on the liberties and individual rights of the citizens. As citizens, we must not—we cannot—tolerate such assaults, or we shall inevitably be deprived of our status as citizens, and instead become subjects—the ruled, not the rulers. Stand as a citizen this year—refuse to become a subject. Restore constitutional limits to the powers of government, and hold government officials at all levels, in all three branches—accountable to the law. Remember, the Constitution is our law, limiting government power; don’t let it be taken from you, along with your rights. In Colorado, we have a unique opportunity this year to hold not just our elected officials (our legislators and executivebranch officeholders) accountable, but the appointed officials in our judiciary as well—those who should be the guardians of our constitutional rights, but instead have acted repeatedly to weaken and undermine our constitutional rights. We will not have another such opportunity for 10 years to hold a majority of our state Supreme Court accountable—we must not waste it. Our form of government—a constitutionally limited “Republic, if you can keep it”—is worthy of our best efforts in its defense. This unique experiment in human governance, that has lasted more than two centuries, this “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not [MUST NOT!] perish from the earth.”

There is some discussion on the web about the authenticity of that quote but it does not matter too much in the end: in Stalin’s Soviet Union voting was mandatory and there was only one choice on the ballot. Voting was a civic duty enforced by party activists. Voting proved one’s loyalty to the system and not voting was viewed as disloyalty and an act of rebellion. Participation was routinely reported as 99%. This, by the way, is what concerns me about leftist Democrats advocating national voter IDs, a national voter registration database and the like. It can be another step on the road to tyranny. Unfortunately, we don’t have to go to Stalin for quotes about vote fraud: right here in 19th century New York City, Boss Tweed is reported to have remarked, “As long as I count the votes, what are you going to do about it?” Theodore Roosevelt cleaned up the corruption surrounding Tammany Hall around the turn of the 20th century but voting fraud and corruption remains alive and well in America today. Stealing Elections by Wall Street Journal writer John Fund was a real eye-opener for me. I have always voted: carefully marked my ballot and turned it in thinking that once in the ballot box or placed in the U.S. mail it was safe. Was I ever wrong! There are many ways to commit vote fraud and charlatans have figured them all out. John Fund exposes them. The first edition was published in September, 2004; I read the updated 2008 edition. The first question one might want to ask is who really won the contested 2000 Florida presidential election. The answer is clearly George W. Bush, and Fund cites numerous post-election independent studies to prove that. It is not the central theme of the book, however. The central theme is how lax election laws and weak or nonexistent enforcement make fraud possible. Following Thomas Sowell, Fund says that there are two competing visions of fair elections in America. Republicans, he says, generally focus on fair elections by which they mean that entitled citizens should vote and that votes are counted accurately. They focus on process. Democrats, on the other hand, want to ensure that as many

people as possible actually do vote. They focus on voter turnout. Seem like two sides of the same coin, doesn’t it? It does to me, but in practice it results in bitter disagreements. Democrats strongly oppose voter ID systems, claiming it limits who can vote. Republicans, on the other hand, favor state-level voter IDs because it ensures only eligible people can vote. Fund has an engaging style that makes this a fast and interesting read. His examples go back to when LBJ was elected in 1948 by what is now recognized as a stolen election.2 And it is not always the Rs versus the Ds in fraud. There are examples of fraud in Democratic primaries, of Democrats suppressing Republican voters as well as stuffing the ballot boxes, losing and “finding” ballots, voter registration lists larger than the voting population and more. Both parties at different times and in different places are culpable. These types of vote fraud fall into two major categories: voter identity theft and creating false ballots. In the first type, someone votes for a registered voter who is not likely to show up at the polls. It is only discovered if the real voter does show up. A lack of voter ID requirements makes this kind of fraud possible; if the real voter does show up, no one can know who the imposter was or which ballot was his. Creating false ballots is also not hard, as the case of ACORN registering the Dallas Cowboys in Las Vegas—although not mentioned in the book—clearly shows. Americans’ confidence in the election process is at an all-time low, he writes. We must restore confidence in the system and the last chapter of the book details some of Fund’s suggestions for doing that. When Barack Obama won by six million votes in 2008, I thought: a convincing victory. ACORN could not have manufactured more than two million. But now, after reading of all the ways that vote fraud can occur, I’m not so sure. Highly recommended. Five stars. This is not a book for the faint-hearted or for those who hold the “accidentalist” view of history. It is nearly 600 pages long, and covers an immense amount of history relating to the capture of the American economy by international central bankers. Having said that, it is immensely readable. Although Griffin acknowledges, “Thick books can be intimidating. We tend to put off reading them.” he makes his book easy to read with a brief preview and summary of each chapter. The serious student is then free to investigate the proofs backing up his conclusions. For those remaining skeptical, the biography is extensive with many highly regarded authors supporting his conclusions At the end, Griffin reiterates his position about the Fed: 1. It is incapable of accomplishing its stated objectives. 2. It is a cartel operating against the public interest. 3. It is the supreme instrument of usury. 4. It generates our most unfair tax. 5. It encourages war. 6. It destabilizes the economy. 7. It is an instrument of totalitarianism.

It will be hard for even the most jaundiced eye to reject these conclusions, even if it has been immersed in politically correct history up until now. The only bone to pick is his series of suggestions to reverse the course the Fed has placed the country upon for nearly 100 years. He makes no mention of the Tea Party influence, naturally, as he finished the third edition in 1998. But his lack of references to educational organizations such as The John Birch Society (which heavily promoted his book in the early years) with its long track record of successfully reaching, teaching, and turning students of history into activists was troubling. Why wouldn’t he be pleased to refer his readers to organizations that have been involved in the freedom fight for years rather than inviting them to create one on their own? That is picking nits. It’s a wonderful book and an earth-shattering experience for those who know little about real history and the powers behind the establishment fakers and statists. The Bush Dynasty, America’s Secret Government, and the Hidden History of the last Fifty Years by Russ Baker Reviewed by Mike McKinney, Guest Writer John F. Kennedy’s assassination on a bright day in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 is “… one of the most tragically memorable days in the lives of those who lived through it,” as Russ Baker puts it in Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Secret Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years, (p.49). Indeed, adults at the time tell me of how they remember with near picture perfect precision exactly what they were doing when they heard the news. However, President George H.W. Bush’s only recalls being “somewhere in Texas,” (p. 44). Baker notes that journalists who go near the JFK assassination are written off as “’conspiracy nuts,’” but he plunges forward. Indeed, Baker has a better grasp of former President George H. Bush’s whereabouts on that day than Bush himself. An F.B.I. memo states that Bush called that day, saying he wanted it to be “kept confidential,” but he had heard assassination talk from James Parrot who worked for the Republicans. Parrot was interviewed by the F.B.I. who quickly dismissed Bush’s hot tip. Nonetheless, the information established that Bush was in Tyler, Texas on that date and not in faraway Dallas. Then there’s Bush’s relationship with a man who squired Oswald and his wife around for months before the assassination. George de Mohrenschildt “guided every step of (Oswald’s) life,” helping him “find jobs and apartments,” (p. 67). Soon after de Mohrenschildt wrote a letter in the 1970’s asking Bush for help to “remove this net around us” with respect to renewed interest in the case, de Mohrenschildt was given shock treatment at the hospital J.F.K. was

taken to. Months later he was found dead of a gunshot through his mouth. If this isn’t enough to make your blood boil, Baker’s tale of Bush’s involvement in the Nixon Administration and Watergate should do the job. Due to “a sense of indebtedness” to the Bush family, (p. 164) Nixon appointed a young, inexperienced George “Poppy” Bush to be his representative at the U.N., even giving him a seat on his cabinet. As people familiar with Nixon’s Watergate collapse know, Bob Woodward was the central figure in bringing Nixon down. Author Russ Baker provides intriguing evidence suggesting that Woodward worked for the C.I.A.. Why would the C.I.A. want Nixon out? Well, Nixon was a curious man and requested C.I.A. files on the J.F.K. assassination, which was, as it remains today, a big, “No, No!” Indeed, Baker goes on to show how John Dean, the supposed hero of Watergate who was lionized by the left for turning on Nixon, actually recruited people to do a walkthrough of the Watergate hotel. He also encouraged G. Gordon Liddy to establish a “really first-class intelligence operation, instigated Watergate, and offered E. Howard Hunt the hush money that really made Nixon look bad (pp. 227-228). In the end, Watergate was a set-up that Nixon knew nothing about. And who provided Nixon with the final friendly nudge to step down? You guessed it, George H.W. Bush. One of the best things about Baker’s book is that it’s a page-turner. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, and is, most importantly, true, with well over 1,000 footnotes of documentation.

Wipe That Smirk Off Your Bumper Obama Diehards Think it’s Still ‘08 Jay Cadillac, Contributing Writer They’re like an out-of-season wood tick you find crawling around in your chest hairs. “How long have you been there, you ugly lyme-disease-spreading little parasite? You were supposed to have crawled back into the woods from where you came a long time ago.” Sometimes they’re just a blue blur in your peripheral vision. At other times, they jump out dead ahead when you least expect, jarring you, reminding you that, oh yeah, he’s our president, isn’t he?

I am well aware that 53% of voters put Barack Obama into office, many for what they thought at the time were good reasons: They were mad at Bush and the Republicans. They were frightened by the economy’s collapse and desperate to try anything. They wanted hope and change. They wanted to prove that Archie Bunker is dead. And for the child voters (those under 30 and those baby boomers still stuck in the 1960s), they wanted the nation’s top politician to be hip and cool. But, 18 months later, how’s President Cool doing? Oh, the Harvard smirk is still there, mostly. He proudly rammed through Obamacare, even though two-thirds of Americans didn’t want it. He scolded Arizona, even though two-thirds of Americans like its anti-illegal-immigration law. He scowled at Israel, although most Americans say it is justified in defending itself. He probably sincerely thinks his country, and more importantly, the world, is a safer and happier place since he’s put a stop to the strutting imperialism of the Bush years. I suspect he still believes the ayatollahs in Iran will soon stick their nuclear reactors in the crusher and buy the world a Coke and sing with him in perfect harmony. Those are a lot of accomplishments in a year and a half, enough to make any man feel entitled to a smile, perhaps even a smirk. After all, Barack Obama was not elected simply to be a one or two-term caretaker president, satisfied on his watch to keep safe from its enemies the Great Experiment of the most remarkably success-

I will drive out of my way, figuring the extra carbon footprint my SUV is making will be forgiven on Judgment Day, to avoid certain neighborhoods where I’m sure to be assaulted by the rear end of a Prius with a bright and gleaming (don’t they ever fade?) red, white, and blue (mostly blue) “Obama ’08” bumper sticker. Streets around Colorado College seem to be especially infested. I can only imagine a trip to Boulder. I want to scream at these drivers. If it’s a parked car and nobody’s inside, I want to grab a chisel and scrape off the sticker. Is it just my hypersensitivity or does the little red squiggle at the top of some of those ’08 stickers look an awful lot like a smirk? I’ve despised smirkers since I was a kid. Even when they’re not at the moment smirking I know smirkers are thinking a smirk.

Not even an oil-spattered Gulf of Mexico seems to stymie President Cool. He’s instinctively seized on the heartbreaking pictures of oil-soaked pelicans and sea turtles to push for “cap and trade” and spread massive new subsidies to solar and wind farms. He won’t entertain the notion that oil companies were forced to drill in miledeep waters because enviros chased them away from safer, shallower waters (where “top kill” would likely have readily worked) and can’t even consider operating in the Arctic wasteland of northern Alaska. After all, Barack Obama is smarter than most of us. He was educated at Harvard and Columbia. Oprah loves him. Paul McCartney does too. Chris Matthews has a man-crush on him. The hippest and most

beautiful people of Hollywood adore him. The New York Times worships him. He reads only the right books (such as “The Post-American World”). You’d never find him clinging to his guns and religion or wearing a U.S. flag lapel pin or putting his hand over his heart when the National Anthem is played. Heck, this year he refused to continue that parochial Memorial Day tradition of placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington. Poll numbers that have tumbled from the high 60s to the low 40s, you would think, would maybe humble a man, would remind him that America is a republic with carefully crafted checks on power. But America has never before put a man quite like Barack Obama into the White House. We’re stuck with him, for awhile longer. And I guess we’re stuck with his bumper stickers and their infuriating little smirks. But wouldn’t it be fun, at the next Tea Party, to give everyone there a bundle of “Change It Back” stickers, along with a pot of Gorilla Glue, and assign them to paste them over any and all leftover “Obama ’08” stickers they can find? A Conversation with Founder Ben Franklin Ellis Posey, Featured Writer As Independence Day approached, it was time to see if Madame Lazonga could contact the nation’s founding fathers. The fortune teller and medium to the dear departed was waiting. Madame Lazonga greeted me, “As you approached, Bunky, I dialed old Ben Franklin. He’s on the line. Just talk into my crystal ball.” “An honor,” I said. “Can I ask you a question, Mr. Franklin?” A hollow voice from the great beyond said, “Of course. And call me Ben, please.” What a nice guy, I thought. “One thing that bothers a lot of people these days is what’s happening on our southwestern border. Illegal immigrants stream into the country by the millions, and the federal government does little or nothing to stop it. Most of us want to secure the borders and to stop the unlawful traffic. Others say we are a nation of immigrants and should welcome those who want a better life here. Any thoughts that might clarify the matter from the viewpoint of an original signer of the Constitution?” “Once I said, ‘Love your Neighbour; yet don’t pull down your Hedge.’ Does that fit your dilemma?” “You betcha,” I said. “Another big issue today is the Tea Party movement. Not new, I know, but are you familiar with the modern version? And what advice would you give its followers?” “What my friend Samuel Adams said fits your question. I’ll quote Sam: ‘It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds.’”

“Right on the money,” I said. “Now another question. A lot of people are talking about the United States Constitution and what the founders intended. Can you give me some insight into your thinking during the 1776 Constitutional Convention?” “Well, let me see,” he pondered. “I can tell you what I thought once it was done, written on parchment and signed by all. A letter I wrote to Jean Baptiste Leroy in 1789 says it pretty well: ‘Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in the world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes.’” “Wow, you really hit that last part about death and taxes on the head,” I said. “But the part about the Constitution has an appearance of permanence kind of bothers me. Doesn’t sound very permanent.” “Then consider this: ‘Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.’ Does that give you any more insight, young man?” Young man? I really like this guy. “One last thing,” I said. “There are some today who question what kind of government the founding fathers intended.” There was a smile in old Ben’s voice. “Once a woman asked me, ‘Well, Doctor, what have we got, a Republic or a Monarchy?’ I told her, “A Republic, if you can keep it.” With that timely advice Ben Franklin’s voice faded away.
