“Time for a change” – PDM candidate Ralph Higgs implores FORMER Director of the Tourists Board and newly-minted political candidate, Ralph Higgs, believes he can be the change that North and Middle Caicos needs to help transform the twin-island constituency into a booming tourism and business hub in the Turks and Caicos. Higgs, who has been a long-time supporter of the Opposition party, the People’s Democratic Movement, said he has now taken the bold step to represent the people of the Islands on a different platform. He was speaking at the announcement of his candidacy as one of the PDM candidates during a midday ceremony at the North and Middle Caicos causeway, tactically placed at the point where the two islands meet. Higgs explained why he picked that location for the announcement: “Having this event here is logistically challenging, but I I I wanted us to be here to send a new symbol, a symbol that your next representative would be the representative for North Caicos and Middle Caicos.” He promises that he will be a representative for the people of both
Islands, and not just one of them. The candidate noted that the two islands have some of the best beaches in the TCI, yet tourists are not given the opportunity to properly enjoy these islands, due to inadequate accommodation and the environmental issues. Speaking about his role in the tourism industry of the TCI, Higgs observed that no one can say that he has not represented the TCI well, adding that sometimes he has been the sole voice speaking up for the TCI. “I remember when the constitution was suspended, we didn’t have any government, we didn’t have a Minister of Tourism, I became the de facto minister of tourism and the tourist board was left with nine million dollars worth of debt, and I was able to pay that debt down fifty cents on the dollar, saving TCIG almost five million dollars.” Higgs added that the country now needs leadership that is mindful of the taxpayers that pay the salaries of the politicians and their lifestyles. “A lot of persons will tell you that every time I spend a dollar, I make

every effort to ensure that I get 100 per cent return. If I am going to spend my money wisely I want to assure you that I will spend your money wisely and get the best return on every dollar.” The candidate called on the residents to vote PDM if they’re tired of not being able to enjoy simple things like a sunset, having to close their homes early, or even having to close schools some days due of the mosquito infestation and sand fly problem on the islands. He emphasized that it is high time for a change: “Right here in the Caribbean, in the Cayman Islands, and in Winnipeg in Canada, they have serious issues with mosquitoes, but they have over the years put systems in place to control those things. “So while I am not speaking to any specific priority orders, I can assure that one of the first things I will do is make every effort to
establish sustainable relationships with institutions in Canada and the Cayman islands. And you will see proper systems put in place to ensure that when our tourists come to visit us, and when our people want to go and explore the beauty of our country, they can do so without fear of being inundated with sand flies and mosquitoes.” Higgs stressed that this is basic caring for the people. He added that as soon as the PDM is sworn into office he will lead an economic summit in the Islands to ensure that young Turks and Caicos Islanders who want to be become entrepreneurs, see a clear pathway to achieving their dreams. Higgs is very determined about boosting business ownership on the two islands, ensuring that everyone should be able to earn a sustainable living. “I want to assure that there is tremendous business opportunities

THE GOVERNMENT needs to be more proactive and transparent in dealing with Zika Virus cases before there is a national outbreak. These sentiments were expressed by the Leader of the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) Oswald Skippings in a media release issued Wednesday, August10. Skippings remarks come days after Leader of the People`s Democratic Movement (PDM) Sharlene Cartwright –Robinson expressed her party`s concern with what seems to be a lack of effort by the Government to seriously deal with the Zika virus. The PDM also noted that there is seemingly a lack of dedication on the part of the Government to actively address the Zika virus in the Turks and Caicos Islands. To date five cases of the dreaded

,not only deprives the public of the opportunity of knowing where to exercise uttermost caution, but it puts pregnant and potentially pregnant women at an unnecessary higher risk of contracting this potentially dangerous virus. He said: “The insensitive and unprofessional approach taken by the Premier speaks to the lack of concern for the wellbeing of our people by him and his PNP administration. It is totally unfair and unacceptable and is an insult to our intelligence.” Skippings emphasized that more must be done to protect and educate the population. “Moreover, it is simply not enough to distribute more mosquito nets and utilize more insecticides, but as I have been stating for the past twelve months, among the measures a PDA administration would take, CONTINUED

Growing crime rate could affect tourism – Governor BY OLIVIA ROSE As the crime rate in the TCI poses a serious threat to the tourism industry, Governor Peter Beckingham, in a recent interview with “The View”, a local television program, said the rising crime rate must be controlled. The Governor admitted that he is under no illusions that the increasing crime rate over the years is worrying to all and needs to be addressed immediately. “It’s a serious problem and it’s something that we`ve got to contain and we have to contain it, both for ourselves and the people who live here and, of course, because our reputation stands or falls internationally with the tourism market on being a place which is safe and secure.” Governor Beckingham, on the subject of domestic security, noted that more work needs to be done. “In terms of domestic security we clearly need to try and get on top of some of the break-ins which are happening. There are too many.
Governor Peter Beckingham
Police Commissioner James Smith
There are various ways we can try to do this; and I`ve had a lot of talks with the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition, and of course, the Commissioner of Police.” He asserted that he had complete confidence in the Commissioner of Police and his ability to effectively curb the crime situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands. “He`s a man of complete integrity,
he`s a man of huge experience, I don`t know how many people realize it, but we`re fortunate to have someone who had a very senior position in the police in London. “He`s worked in a very tough environment of Hong Kong; he`s worked in some pretty tough cities in Scotland, where there are serious levels of crime, and I’m in no doubt that we have a man who is deeply
committed to bringing the crime levels down.” Turning his attention to possible solutions to combat crime, Governor Beckingham pointed out that the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will aid in the fight against crime. He noted that monies have been allocated in the Government`s 2016 /2017 budget for this initiative. “One of the areas that we`re developing to meet the issue of particularly robbery is the use of closed circuit television.” “CCTV will be a significant deterrent; it’s not going to suddenly solve it overnight, but other countries like Antigua have introduc ed it. In the UK we have a huge use of CCTV, Beckingham said.” HEAVY CRITICISMS Despite the Governor`s unwavering support for Police Commissioner James Smith, some local politicians have called for his resignation, saying he is not right for the job. Only recently the Commissioner
came in for heavy criticism from Former Premier Michael Misick, who expressed his frustration at the level of crime and the spate of unsolved murders in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Misick, in a strongly worded statement, said it was quite evident that British-appointed Governors and Commissioners of Police are incapable of managing the crime situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands. “They stand accused of only paying lip-service to crime, and failing to provide the Police Force with adequate and necessary equipment and resources. “By their own admission, crime is rising and the detection rate in this country is extremely low. The Turks and Caicos Islands is now paying a very dear price for the gross incompetence of the Governor and the Commissioner,” he said. Police Commissioner James Smith has since reiterated his commitment to addressing the crime situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
TCI and Cayman launch new civil service partnership BY OLIVIA ROSE THE GOVERNMENT of the Turks and Caicos Islands has launched a new partnership with the Cayman Islands to improve the performance of the civil services of both countries. The new partnership is geared at enhancing training, professional development and performance management in the civil service. On August 8, Deputy Governor’ Anya Williams accompanied by the Director of her office Mr. Tito Lightbourne and Human Resources Director Mr. Mark Greenway visited the Cayman Islands to commence talks with officials in this regard. According to a media release during the course of the visit the Deputy Governor and her team had the opportunity to engage with
Cayman`s Deputy Governor Franz Manderson and his team on areas of mutual interest and how both territories could work to improve the services that their agencies provide to the general public. Commenting on the visit Deputy Governor Manderson said: “It was a privilege and pleasure to welcome the Deputy Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands to the Cayman Islands. “We are working together to improve the performance of our respective civil services so that we can deliver high quality services to our customers and look forward to great successes.” According to the release Deputy Governor Williams was pleased to visit Cayman and to formally launch such a partnership. She stated: “DG Manderson and
Deputy Governor of Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), Anya Williams met with the Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin, MBE, JP during her visit to Cayman
I were appointed during the same period as both our territories have been undergoing a series of reform programs throughout the years, we both have continuously led over the years in delivering presentations
in the UK and elsewhere on the successes of our reform programs. “Following on from the voluntary severance program in the Turks and Caicos we have spent a considerable amount of time during the past few
years in focusing on rebuilding the civil service by ensuring that departments were properly staffed and equipped with the resources needed to carry out their jobs, including improvements in pay and infrastructure and whilst there is still some work to be done in this area, our new vision will focus on rebranding the civil service and on improving our customer service delivery.” She explained that this will be done by continuing to focus on staff training and professional development and by ensuring that proper performance management systems are put in place. The Cayman Islands has been of great assistance to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the past in providing training for social services and in other areas of development.

CCTV FOR PROVO AND GRAND TURK
In an effort to curb the country’s escalating crime, the National Security Council has recommended the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in Providenciales and Grand Turk. What are your thoughts? Will this be effective in the fight against crime?
A stew for trouble
I believe this is long overdue, but will only work if we operate as true professionals as visual information is revealed. What is the point of CCTV if when we see who is committing crime, we back away or stand down because the person acting offensively is our cousin or brother or niece or son! Our small society makes us a wonderful haven for exceptional vacation and family experiences; but it is also a stew for trouble cause all a we is one family! Can we do it? Make that tough call to preserve peace... I have my doubts.
Who is the NSC?
First who / what is the National Security Council & do they have any background in law enforcement? CCTV might be useful if the data is securely managed. Do our police have training in reading, storing & securing this data?
Wind bags?
Sounds like they should be sitting at the U.N.’s high table. Why it is whenever a problem arises here some bright spark always wants to form a committee. Usually comprising vociferouswindbags (with no real knowledge of the matter in hand) and making suitable noises and gestures so as to appease the populace, Simply answered, it doesn’t cost money. The solution is proper funding of appropriately experienced personnel and technical back up, but of course that takes money. Surely this is the bailiwick of the Commissioner of Police alone; not lay politicians and bureaucrats CCTV’s? Giving selfie opportunities to criminals is all very well. If they’re masked it won’t bother them one iota. Assuming they are to be extensively deployed throughout the Islands. We will ask the criminals to their commit offenses where there are cameras; they are sure to oblige as actually they are quite bold here. It’s dubious as to whether they will function as a deterrent. More interesting is whether the monies will be forthcoming. Perhaps enough for one at Governor’s Office; given the parsimonious attitude towards paying for policing here!
Right direction
Yes, Its a step in the right direction and overtime it should help, so the investment is one that should be supported. Our current detection rate is extremely bad. The powers that be also need to make the importing of cameras for private homes more readily available and cheaper for average home owners breaking into private homes is out of hand and its getting worst.
Another system?
The radar system ain’t stopping the illegal boats,so why should we have any confidence in any Camera
system.
Waste of money?
How about more effective policing and border control, instead of just throwing more money at it?
It could help
It could make a difference and would only help if the intelligence gathered is analysed and acted upon by those in authorities. Otherwise it will be another waste of precious resources. Resources are not the issues in the TCI; instead it is the will to do what is required even with limited tools. Enforce, enforce, and enforce the law. I recalled a time passed when calls were made for more resources for the police including vehicles and personnel, they got them. What happened since, we got a spike in more unsolved crimes and lawlessness.
Good idea
The cameras sound like a good idea. If they save one life they will be worth the cost. However they may embarrass the relatives of any criminals identified. In the larger sense honest government which offers opportunities for youth could begin to move our islands back to before we had this crime wave of the last 10 years that seems to be getting worse under the present administration and not better.
Wonderful
This is a more than a welcome wonderful idea. The cctv will catch and deter criminal and criminal activity, possibly solve crime
Tried and true
CCTV cameras is a tried and true crime fighting tool, they need to implement it soon.

Clarence Selver promises “honest and focused” representation “DARING to be a Daniel” is how Clarence Selver captioned his intentions to contest the upcoming general elections. Selver officially launched his bid for office last Saturday (August 6) at the Regent Village conference room in Providenciales, to a diverse crowd of supporters, fellow candidates and members of other political parties. “I am honoured to address you and the wider Turks and Caicos of my decision to take a stand, to dare to be a Daniel, to stand here today because of you, the unrepresented, the ones who feel that their dreams can’t be realised, those students who continue be denied scholarships, the single mothers who are struggling to survive from day to day on minimum wage with no sight of a pay raise and hospitality workers who are denied one hundred per cent of their hard earned service charge.
“I stand for them,” Selver said when he took the podium to reintroduce himself to the country. The candidate promised that he would ensure that representation for the “unrepresented in the country” will be heard, felt and realised in the House of Assembly should he capture enough votes to return him to the House. “I am indeed committed to addressing corruption and the negative impact it is having on our community; this means fighting for legislation that will see a complete shift and deterrent to what is presently going on.” He added that too many families are being affected by unnecessary violence and unsolved crime, and that people need to agitate for change to their leaders. Responding to claims that he is contesting the elections in order to be able to receive a pension, the

include changing the current policy of pumping out or treating settled water in public areas only thereby avoiding private property, employing and training more Turks and Caicos Islanders in the Environmental Health department to effectively cover the entire country and putting in place a structured vector control program nationwide.” Premier Ewing also recently stated that: “The Environmental Health Department and Public Health Disease Surveillance Team of the Ministry of Health has stepped up its surveillance activities and has been working with the persons infected with the Zika virus to ensure that the risk of in-country transmission is reduced.” He urged calm as there is no evidence of in-country transmission at this time, although it remains possible. He emphasized that the Environmental Health Department will continue its fogging activities where necessary and country-wide cleanup campaigns will continue. He noted that: “During the PreJoint Ministerial Council Conference which was hosted here last week I, along with the other UK Overseas Territory Leaders, discussed new and innovative ways to combat the Zika virus by reducing the population of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito population. “We will continue to explore those initiatives which are deemed suitable and applicable in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
“We are particularly asking pregnant women to take extra precaution to avoid mosquito bites and to visit our local public health care providers who are currently issuing mosquito nets and providing educational material. However, on Monday July 25 during the House of Assembly the Premier revealed that the Government is contemplating genetically modified mosquitoes to control the population of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. He told the House that the Government has already engaged companies involved in the manufacture of genetically modified mosquitoes. He said: “If this goes well and good, this is something that we may have to consider using in the future and we will have to sensitize the public about it. “I would like to say that yes, these five cases did not just pop up on Saturday. A number of these cases are some that were once in time suspected and before we even communicated anything, as it relates to the suspected cases; we had to confirm, because we have to be true that we are confirming. “We had to also go further and find out, in addition to whether or not they are imported cases, versus in-country transmission. So lots of works have been going on behind the scenes, Premier Rufus Ewing said.” The Zika virus has since been reported in 20 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean from February 2014 to January 26, 2016.
Clarence Selver
candidate made it clear that he does not need to do so, as he is a former elected member of the Assembly, as such, he is already eligible. “I am not seeking pension as some might be saying. The reason why I am so passionate about winning a seat is to provide that focused honest and timely representation that you have come to expect from me. “My country, the Turks and Caicos Islands need me now, just as much as I was needed before, only now the stakes are higher, but I have been prepared for this time and season. “Turks and Caicos Islanders, this is your time to elect a man who has proven that he can be trusted, who has integrity.
“You won’t hear my name mixed up with SIPT [Special Investigation and Prosecution Team] or the integrity commission, I have a proven track record, a proven ability to make sound decisions on behalf of this country.” Selver also implored his supporters to speak to others on his behalf; that way, the candidate said, he will be able to reach more voters before elections is called, as he is doubtful he will be able to personally get his message out to the entire country before the due date. “If you undertake to speak to ten persons on my behalf and they in turn speak to ten persons I have no doubt that we will be victorious at the polls,” the candidate stated.
Under the tree
Following his presentation, Selver invited questions from the gathering Many wanted to know what the position is with his membership with the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM). Selver stated that to this date, he has not received any word from the party’s leadership or executive about whether he has been expelled or fired from his seat in the House of Assembly as one of the PDM’s appointed members. In spite of the uncertainty, the candidate had previously indicated to the media that he is and will remain a PDM, and that he had wanted to contest the upcoming elections as an all island candidate for the party. However, according to Selver, people within the party establishment did not want him to contest this year and had thwarted his efforts to do so in the 2012 elections. He had said that this time around he is not taking no for an answer as he knows he is capable of adequately and honestly representing the people of the Turks and Caicos. Hence, he struck out on his own. And while, there has been no definitive action taken against the PDM member turned independent candidate from the party, on August 15 the House of Assembly resumes, and the fate of Selver’s seat in the House as an opposition appointed member will likely be known then.

PDM to keep the Government’s feet to the fire on service charge review BY OLIVIA ROSE THE PEOPLE`S Democratic movement (PDM) plans to keep the government on its toes when it comes to ironing out service charge issues in the hospitality industry. The Government announced last month that a review committee has been commissioned to examine information received from owner, worker and employer groups operating within the hospitality industry on the management and distribution practices regarding service charges. The committee, which comprises members from both the private and public sectors, will focus on the hospitality sector as the existing service charge ordinance prescribes operational parameters solely for that sector. For months now, the PDM has been vocal in the House of Assembly about reported discrepancies with service charge practices in the hospitality sector. On Monday, April 19, the Opposition Leader Sharlene
Premier Rufus Ewing
Opposition Leader Sharlene Cartwright -Robinson
Cartwright -Robinson moved a private motion in the House of Assembly to reinstate 100 percent gratuity or service charge to hospitality workers at establishments where it is charged. In moving the motion she stated that the right approach must be taken to ensure that people are not treated unfairly as a result of the amended law. Cartwright –Robinson commenting on the Government commissioning the review committee said: “Several months back, I sponsored a Motion to the House calling for a review of
the treatment of service charge in this country. “I note the establishment of a Service Charge Committee and we are surprised that one has been formed given the trivial reasons members of the Government gave in order not to support the Motion. “I must admit that I am not exactly hopeful that anything will come out of this Committee. We have seen Committees established following Motions brought in the House and the work was treated with very little

or no urgency.” She pointed out that her party will keep the Government’s feet to the fire on this issue. Cartwright-Robinson urged the Government to treat this matter with urgency. According to the Government currently there is a legal requirement for any entity that levies a service charge to hold a register of such payments collected during the month and to distribute the amounts collected in equal shares or using a formula approved by the Minister for Finance to all employees. Most importantly, the legislation obtains that not less than 60% of the total service charges paid by customers or guests is payable to the employees of the collecting establishment. During the months of July and August 2016 a survey will be publicly distributed to obtain anonymous feedback on industry practices. The Service Charge Review Committee also intends to conduct interviews of a representative sample of stakeholders in the industry to gather a wide range of open-ended, qualitative data. “Service Charge is defined in the Service Charges (Hotels and Restaurants) Ordinance as “any amount of money charged over and
above the price of accommodation in a hotel, or the selling price of a meal or intoxicating liquor or beverage purchased by a customer, for service to a guest or customer in a hotel or restaurant, but does not include any tax required to be paid under any Ordinance.” While the Ordinance does not specify a rate, most establishments levy the Service Charge at 10%. Premier Rufus Ewing told the House of Assembly on Wednesday (May 11) that the Government is seeking to proactively address issues facing workers in the hospitality sector especially complaints of reduced service charge (tips, gratuity etc). He said: “We heard the call from the Opposition with regards to the reinstatement of a 100 percent of gratuity, and all of these issues are becoming quite confusing to not only members of this House but also members of the public who are confusing terminologies and what is provided for in legislation.” He explained that the committee has been established to allow the Government to fully understand what is taking place in terms of actual practice in the industry. “Because even if today, we were
The upcoming TCI elections: A prize, or a test? Turks and Caicos Post ... Whenever there are elections in the TCI, we describe the party with the most votes as the winner, and administering the government as the prize, given after a contest. But when a political party wins an election, is it a prize, or a test? This notion is taken up by Dr. Canute Thompson of the UWI in an article in the Jamaica Observer titled, ‘Andrew do the right thing.’ In part, he notes that Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in his swearing in speech mentioned how on election day, an elderly man said to him “Andrew do the right thing.” The Prime Minister then said, that the people of Jamaica expect a government that works for them, and an Opposition that is constructive, and noted that the elected government did not win a prize, instead, the people are giving it a test. I think these are wise words spoken by a competent leader, which we in the TCI need to heed. But what is it to do the right thing in TCI politics? To me, this means governing efficiently by managing effectively the challenges we have to contend with. This sees every citizen is employed, and enjoys protection of life and property. It also means a government that

is just, and without prejudice. This creates a harmonious society, and a government that works. And what about a constructive Opposition? Our Opposition parties have always been active, in calling the government of the day to account. They probe, recommend alternatives, and sit on various committees exposing ills, as a result, contributing to constructive governance. Our opposition leaders are highly experienced, and defend the country’s interests, contributing to a culture of responsible governance. What is most significant in what the Jamaican Prime minister said, is that the elected government did not win a prize, but given a test. For TCI politics, this means a party does not win an election, then stop working and reap. Becoming the government
involves working together to implement a vision of the country we would like. Elected members do not hold special status, because whatever they do is permitted by the people, and can be withdrawn. They are not above anyone, and are not more privileged. Governance is therefore not a prize, but about who will best serve the general will. An elected government does not win a prize, instead it is being tested by the people, and graded on its performance. If it performs to expectations, its term will be renewed, on condition of continued performance. So governance is a constant test of the performance of elected members charged as custodians of the people’s will.

to just go and give a 100 percent service charge to those individuals without fully understanding what is taking place in the industry, it may not be to the good of those particular individuals. “What is taking place behind the scene is still not accounted for, so we really need to understand what systems and mechanisms accounts for service charge from employers to employees. “There’s no doubt within anybody’s mind that gratuities and tips that are collected or paid by customers for the benefit of employees should be given to the employees 100 percent. “The only difference is in situations where these tips are in non-cash form, meaning that they are collected through a system of payment by credit card. “Those credit cards incur

Man pleads guilty to threatening to kill child and pregnant woman TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Evanson Walkin pled guilty to a charge of carrying an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear while he was standing trial for the crime in the Supreme Court this past week. The trial began on Monday (August 8) before Judge Robert Shuster, and by Wednesday the defendant changes his not guilty plea to that of guilty after a number of witnesses had given testimony. As a result of his plea, the judge remanded him to prison to return to court for his sentencing on October 11. The incident for which he was arrested for occurred at about 12AM on September 26, 2015.
On the night of the attack, a nineyear-old male child and his sister were walking home from a store in the Five Cays Providenciales area when they Walkin following them. Upon reaching their home Walkin, who reportedly appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, started behaving aggressively towards the boy and his sister, eventually forcing himself into their home. While inside, the young woman asked Walkin to leave, but he refused to do so. Instead, he grabbed her by the arm, dragged her to the floor and placed a curtain over her head. When the child tried to assist his sister by asking Walkin to stop, the defendant took what appeared to be
an orange flare gun from his waist and placed it on the right eye of the child, threatening to take him outside and kill him. The child got frightened and started screaming as he ran outside crying. Walkin followed him and began beating him, police reported. While doing so, a neighbor saw what was happening asked him to leave the little boy alone. He then pointed the flare gun at the neighbor and told her he would kill her as well, before fleeing the scene. He was arrested the next day by police after a chase and was charged with the two offenses. The aggravated burglary charge was later dismissed.
REAL TALK
Michael Misick is unfit for public office I have written many hardhitting columns over the last two years in this country. It took lot of courage for me to stand up for certain things in a country where the majority of citizens do not want to stand for anything. Nevertheless, my father taught me that I must stand for something or I will fall for anything. Although the content of this may offend many people and make me a public enemy, it is with much prayer, integrity and conviction that I must declare to this country that Michael Eugene Misick is “Unfit for Public Office”. For the record Mike (as we affectionately called him) and I are flesh and blood and descend from the same family tree because his grandmother Alice Gray and my Greatgrandmother Roselyn Gardiner were first cousins. Anyone who knows me, they know I love and value family. But when family is wrong, you must chastise them. For the record Mike used to be a man I admired and look up to. For it was in 1991 as a child when I first saw this passionate, firey and charismatic young politician swoop into North Caicos with 1991 PNP general election campaign proclaiming “PNP All The Way”. As many of you would remember, from 1980 until 1999, my father Salisbury Walkin (Bar-Sal) was a staunch supporter of the PNP and was very instrumental in the election of Stafford Missick, Robert Hall, Washington Misick and Michael Misick to the House of Assembly. For most of my childhood my father thought highly of Mike, believed in him and went on the road campaigning for him
in 1991 and 1995. However, in 1999, my father parted ways with Mike because he found him to be untrustworthy, a user and a promise breaker (in his own words). I was hiding behind the partition when Mike and Lillian Robinson (Been at that time) came to our house in Major Hill pleading with daddy to give Mike a third chance and daddy said no. Mike asked my father “BarSal tell me what I can do to make this up to you” and my father replied “absolutely nothing”. This was the moment that my perception of Mike and who he claimed to be, changed. Having said all that, it is with a spirit of power, love and a sound mind do I declare to this country that based on what we have gone through as a country during Mike’s leadership and administration, and what we require now to recover; Michael Eugene Misick is unfit for public office. It is sad that no political, religious or civic leader has found the courage to tell you this publicly and I guess this is my responsibility to tell this country that you are unfit for public office and should not even be nominated to stand in elections. Mike, when you returned from law school and undermined your brother Washington Misick for the PNP leadership, that was the first sign this country had that you were unfit for public office. If you undermined your own flesh & blood, what wouldn’t you do to undermine this country? In 2003 you campaigned on “Making every Turks & Caicos Islander First”. However, your policy and administration made every other nation besides us first. You are unfit for public office. When you came into office, you met a surplus over 20 million dollars and although your Minister of Finance lied to this country claiming we were broke; you went
9
on a ridiculous spend drift and lived lavishly off tax payer’s dollars. Moreover, your stewardship during your administration turned a 20 million dollar surplus into a 200 plus million dollar debt. You are unfit for public office and should not be allowed to go anywhere near public funds ever again. Your rhetoric does not match your record. Your idea of economic empowerment was based on flipping crown land and giving belongers a check for being at the table while you or one of your minsters took their cut under and above the table. You tried to have money circulating in an attempt to fool the people into believing that having money was power instead of being able to earn money. You are unfit for public office. You championed the policy of reserving certain business categories for belongers to invest in because they could not compete with foreign investors. However, you gave the biggest foreign investor belonger status. Moreover, you did everything you could to give away our birth-right through expedited naturalizations for expats you deemed worthy and for political gain. You are unfit for public office and you need to stand down. I recently listened to you talk about a defence force for TCI, you had the money and you had the opportunity to establish one, why didn’t you? Could it be because your immigration policy was geared towards population expansion in preparation for premature independence? Or is that we did not have an illegal immigration problem because your government legally gave them everything they wanted so they had very little need to come here illegally. You are delusional if you believe my generation would trust you with our immigration

policy again and hence you are unfit for public office and need to stand down. During a 2009 Commission of Inquiry, this country listened to Sir. Robin Auld question you on a number corruption and mal-administration charges and by your own admission you answered yes. You admitted to leasing a private jet to entertain Hollywood friends at the expense of tax payer’s dollars. You admitted to flipping land for money. You admitted to extravagant spending and a wide range of maladministration and stupid decisions. Mike we all felt the gut wrenching feeling of the disaster your administration brought to this country, and Sir. Robin Auld did not have to tell us in 2009 that you were unfit for public office. Subsequently, when you were forced by your Cabinet to finally resign as Premier, and the SIPT team began to do their slow work, you did not stay with your people you claim to love so much. When you captained this ship into treacherous waters and into a reef of disaster you left. When the constitution was suspended and our democracy was taken from us, when the British came and took over our country, where were you? You told my generation that ‘you ain’t never scared’ but you got scared and abandoned your ship. Captain Mike you are unfit for public office. You signed a healthcare deal for the construction of two hospitals
that will cost this country over 2 billion dollars (40-44 million a year for 25 years) at the end of the contract. You are unfit for public office. Since returning to this country, you have never publicly, sincerely nor humbly apologized for the National Disaster you spearheaded in TCI but yet still trying to seek office. You have shown no remorse and no signs of regret and thus you are unfit for public office. There might be some religious and public figures putting foolishness in your head that you deserve a second chance in politics in this country but they are false prophets and just like you; they are unfit for public office. Even if you are able to convince enough people to elect you in this election, you will still be unfit for public office. A few years after my father’s death, he appeared to me in a dream (the only time I ever dreamt about him since his death) and told me not to support you. I break that promise in 2007 and followed a crowd voting for you and because your opponent was likewise unfit for public office. I have paid a heavy price for that decision and breaking my vow. This country cannot afford to pay anymore for your actions and bad decisions. You are unfit for public office and you need to stand down.

THE CAPITAL NOTE HOLY SPIRIT HEALED MY BARRENNESS Dear Bishop Williams: I am now thirty years of age and have been married and trying to have a child for the past six years. I was praying and fasting every day that God will intervene in my situation. Three months ago while in worship service I was filled with and dancing in the Holy Spirit while being on the upper platform. A few minutes later when my dancing and Spirit movement had stopped, I found myself on the lower platform which is about eight feet lower. I asked as to I got on the lower platform, only to be told that I just walked off the upper onto the lower platform without falling or shaking. The noted that the Holy Spirit was with me because I did not stagger. It gave the appearance as if the Holy Spirit lifted me from the upper and gently lowered me onto the lower platform in the presence of the congregation. Yes, Bishop, everyone thought it was a miracle and it was. I am now almost three months pregnant and in good health. Yes, I exercised my faith and now I have received the results, but I have two questions for you: 1. Which category of God’s angels carried me gently to the lower platform? 2. Why God did not tell me that I would get pregnant a forehand? MY FAITH HAS FOUND A RESTING PLACE IN ST. KITTS Dear my faith has found a resting place: Your faith may have found a resting place alright, but your mind is still wondering a bit. Now as to why God did not inform you a forehand relative your prayerful pregnancy, I really don’t know and I don’t want to get all up in God’s business with you. Just continue to be prayerful, thankful and appreciative to God for His rich blessing of the pregnancy. You rightly know that this special and unique gift came directly from God in a marital and stable lifestyle, therefore, you must continue to glorify God. Since He brought you extraordinarily safe so far, His grace in safety will be with you to the end. It was probably Michael, God’s fighting or warrior angel which landed you safely on the lower platform with the whole company of archangels to assist you. I know that you are most thankful. _______________________

although I prayed for one, but God, in His infinite wisdom, did not grant a daughter to me. Our last son is a wayward mischievous boy who loves to come home late at nights. His father warned him repeatedly that he will be locked out one of these day to teach him a lesson. This night, we heard our son’s car arriving at 2 am and my husband jumped out bed and double locked the front door to prevent his entrance. I did not give it much attention. But when I heard my child, our son, calling me, his mother to let him in, I could not take it. I hurriedly jumped over my husband, pushed him aside and went to the front door to open it. My husband tried to prevent me, but I told him, “if my child is outside, then I will be outside”. Our son heard me saying those word and replied, “Mon, I don’t want to cause any trouble with you and dad, I am going somewhere else to sleep”. I shouted out, “oh no, you are not sleeping anywhere else tonight” and proceeded to unlock and open the front door, ran behind my son and brought him back into our home. Bishop, by this time, our son and I were crying. My husband did not prevent him from entering but knew what was going on. We never had the problem anymore with our son because he indicated that his actions almost caused a rift in our marital relationship. But Bishop, the lingering question in my mind is whether I was right in disobeying my husband in the aforementioned situation?” FIRST TIME DISOBEYING MY HUSBAND IN BIMINI Dear First time disobeying my husband: I can see that you took the old English marital vows which indicated that you should love, honour and obey your husband. The obedience refers to matters that are just and right for the benefit of the entire household, with your husband taking the agreed lead. Your mother instincts called out to you and your husband recognized it, therefore, he did not prevent you from opening the door and returning with your son. Now listen carefully, this is what I am recommending: Immediately convene a family love-fest meeting to apologize, appreciate, forgive and embrace each other with words of hope and encouragement. You and your husband must now indicate the way forward relative the relationship and respect for your sons. I see by faith that God is with you and your family and you are strategically
placed for the enrichment of your family both spiritually and naturally. REMEMBER, TO KEEP JESUS AS THE CENTRE OF YOUR FAMILY. _________________________
QUICK ON BORROWING, NEVER ON PAYING BACK Dear Bishop Williams I am an educated man of twentyfive years of age and I am not lying when I tell you that from the time of five years of age, I began to borrow money from others especially my parents and siblings. At the age of about ten, I adapted another mode of borrowing with absolutely no intention of repaying. If it became necessary, I borrowed from Peter to pay Paul. Soon I was a compulsive liar because I kept no records. Bishop, I could make up a plausible story of needs that made everything sounded so real. Of cause, I was caught in lies numerous time, but it had absolutely no effect on me. Bishop, I am now a confirmed pathological liar – living from one lie to another for my daily existence. I don’t want to change. Now tell me, Bishop, what my future looks like? I CAN LIE LIKE THE DEVIL, FROM PROVIDENCIALES Dear I can lie like the devil: You, like the devil, will face full and complete destruction in hell. You will catch hell while you are living on this earth and continue in hell at the second resurrection. You sold yourself out to the lying devil from a child and I am surprised that you did not mention your parent’s role throughout your lying career. Confirmed pathological lairs like you very seldom change but suffer greatly from grievously bodily harm and sometimes death inflected by your victims. You have one of the worst kinds of future to look forward to. ONLY JESUS CAN CHANGE YOU – pursue and receive Him for the sake of your life both in this world and in the world to come. The Traveller’s Tree “AHH , what a good read :)”, was the reaction of one of my four readers to my piece last week, which dealt with that scourge of humanity called racism and how our children are our best hope for a future free of discrimination, of any kind. To illustrate my point I had made reference to a book I recently re-read, “Mine Boy” by Peter Abrahams, and BY TITUS DE BOER to my delight several other Titus de Boer, who originally readers got back to me and moved to the TCI from thanked me for suggesting a Germany in 1989, is a good summer read. While I journalist by training and currently works as an art am always thrilled to hear that promoter and consultant in some people are still capable Grand Turk and internationally. of putting a smart phone, tablet or laptop aside to read a good book, I would hasten to add that “Mine Boy” is not light, summer reading. Far from it. Speaking of putting away gadgets: No sooner had my six year old daughter announced that she had run out of reading material and could I please bring back all the Harry Potter books I could find, I stumbled upon this week’s edition of DER SPIEGEL which in its title story deals with all the gadgets controlling our seemingly busy, modern lives. The title of the story, “Can’t you put that thing away for a minute?”, really says it all. Indeed, look around and truly observe the people around you. Be it in the bank cue, in a restaurant, even at a bar (where not too long ago people just sat around and talked), everywhere people are checking their Facebook posts, likes, friends, chatting on whatsapp, etc. And just to be clear: Do I throw in a quick game or two of Sudoku on my iPhone or attempt to compose 140 witty characters on Twitter, while waiting for my turn in the bank? Of course I do ! But I also still enjoy a good read more often than not and will say categorically that if I had to choose between gadgets and books, the books would be my first choice. Speaking of good reads (and having established that Mr. Abrahams’ masterpiece is perhaps not the best choice for light, summer reading), my current pick would be “The Traveller’s Tree”, by Patrick Leigh Fermor. First published in 1950, this superbly written book is strictly speaking a piece of “travel writing”, although in view of its unique style, humour and the sheer brilliance of the observations, I am enclined to call it (travel) literature at its best. Full stop. At a time when travel through the West Indies was primarily by steamer, sailing ship and occasionally aeroplane, Leigh Fermor’s account of Caribbean islands is limited to most of the islands of the eastern Caribbean, as well as Jamaica and Haiti. Sadly, neither the TCI nor Bahamas were on the itinary. Aside from the author’s accounts of his travels, the book is littered with dozens of local anecdotes, folklore and lyrics of calypso songs of the day which, funny enough, in some cases still appear to be quite relevant. Here, a Trinidadian calypsonian bemoans his governments spending priorities: “Again and again I am forced to comment on what I call our most peculiar government. They said they were unable financially to help the West Indian university. To aid deserving cases they always fail yet they can build a million-dollar jail.” The language and the astute observations are what really make this such a worthwhile read and on that note...”We had travelled through the last two islands with scarcely less speed than that of thought. But the moment we arrived in Haiti this breakneck tempo slowed down to one of almost prehistoric sloth...”

Governor lauds strides in Tourism sector – Food production and financial services still lagging behind BY OLIVIA ROSE GOVERNOR Peter Beckingham has lauded the tourism sector in Turks and Caicos Islands for its enormous strides in making the country one of the top tourism brands in the Caribbean. His extollment comes ahead of the forthcoming ‘Invest TCI Enhancing National Competitiveness’ seminar to be held on September 1. Governor Beckingham in a release said: “I have had plenty of opportunities during my three years in TCI to meet the leaders and drivers of the economy, here and overseas. “At the moment these remain overwhelmingly in the tourism space, and everyone involved in that sector should take a bow for the enormous strides they have helped TCI to achieve.” “We are one of the top Caribbean brands, regarded as a high class resort destination offering quality beaches, sea, security and resorts. “No-one needs me to remind them that it is essential that everyone in TCI works to keep that reputation.
“At the moment these remain overwhelmingly in the tourism space, and everyone involved in that sector should take a bow for the enormous strides they have helped TCI to achieve” - Governor Peter Beckingham
Governor Peter Beckingham
“The risks include degradation of our environment, which on occasions does look fragile, an unacceptable increase in crime, and political instability.” the Governor noted. However, he cautioned that TCI is lagging behind others in the areas of food production and financial services. He emphasized that the upcoming competitiveness conference will also focus on developing new businesses.
He noted that the country is far too dependent on food imports, and its financial services sector is a shadow of Overseas Territory partners and rivals in Bermuda, BVI and Cayman Islands. “I will have a particular interest in hearing what the financial services group recommend TCI look to develop.” He pointed out that with the international focus on Overseas Territories and other countries with perceived tax benefits for investors, TCI will have to peddle very fast to catch its rivals, or over-take them. The Governor welcomed the focus by Invest TCI on co-operation between business and the public sector. He said: “I am pleased that the conference will also be looking at the contribution of the public sector
to growing our economy” “Too often the public service is viewed as a drag on economic development rather than a provider; and again we need to work hard to gain and maintain the confidence of business and the public. “To this end I am particularly pleased that, over the last few months, I have been able to introduce the start of more private sector buyin to improve public service delivery and customer service.” Acknowledging that notable changes will not take place overnight, he encouraged new business owners to seek the advice of seasoned entrepreneurs. Finally the Governor noted that his tenure is coming to an end and he would be leaving TCI in a little over a month’s time. “I will, sadly, be leaving Turks
and Caicos Islands this October after three very happy and, I believe, fruitful years. “The Government has been successful in paring down its debt to a negligible amount, from a colossal $260 million. “Standards and Poor have given us successive Triple B Plus ratings, and our reputation for top end tourism, including notably in villa development, is at an all time high.” He asserted that the formation of Invest TCI is an important and necessary step in building on these achievements. “I look forward to hearing of their conclusions from this Competitiveness seminar, continuing to contribute from overseas to TCI’s successes, and hearing about new investments in the coming months. I’m sure TCI has a great future.”
COMMENTARY
All in the family
My treasured wife Yvette is the oldest girl of 11 children. Ma Charity was a busy lady as head of a large family. Had she not been taken from us by a youth frustrated by promises of wealth unfulfilled we believe she would still be serving as a pillar of Middle Caicos. My mother-in-law represents a period when TCI families were large and overlapping. With the disappointments of the last 13 years, first, second and third generations are leaving TCI. The economic buildup of the 1995-2003 PDM years were hi-jacked by the Mike Misick family for their own benefit. While the legal ramifications of the 2003-2009 administration have yet to play out the Misick family remains in the center of things. In the present PNP government
BY DAVID TAPFER
David is a retired mobile hydraulic engineer and business executive. He has been married to Middle Caicos native Yvette Robinson Tapfer for 25 years and has lived in Conch Bar, Middle Caicos, since 2002. David formerly served as branch chairman of the PDM from 2008 to 2011
we have three ministers with Misick roots. Brother Washington, nephew DonHue and niece Akierra all running for re-election. Mike after being extradited now runs as an independent ! Now comes the Ewing family. Daddy Hilly was first a PNP, then a PDM. When his son Rufus became part of the 2003-2009 messy administration Hilly seemed to slide backwards. A daughter had married PNP Premier for a day Gilly. Now PNP builds on the family genre as
Rufus brings another sister into PNP politics. It looks to those outside the Ewing family that this is a vengeful move against brother Goldray the well spoken Ewing stanchion of PDM principles who easily won the Blue Hills district. The vengeance was obvious as everything sorely needed in Blue Hills, and other PDM districts, were side tracked by Rufus for 4 long years.
The time is coming for Blue Hills voters to choose PDM as winners. It seems obvious that Middle North, and Grand Turk North will easily choose PDM because they and other PNP districts have been simply taken for granted for many long years.
PDM is on a roll and the roll out of election trickery will be needed for any PNP to hold their seat. As Smoky said “PDM may know how to manage government but we (PNP) know how to win elections” . Who will stop them ? Not the new governor, the integrity sleep club, Dudley or the police. It is simply up to the voters to do think for themselves and landslide the country back to where real economic growth occurred and to a government which has a burning desire to serve not be served. Families used to vote along
party lines. The man of the family controlled his wife and children’s vote. Those days are over ! Woman now think for themselves and children make up their own minds. The frustrations of promises made then blown are driving young voters to a change or away from the polls and the territory. Our Haitian voters failed in 2012 to elect their leader who has now aligned himself with those that have suppressed and milked the last dollar from their folks and the country. They will not support the other anti-Haitian “progressive” either. If voters want equal rights they need to get out from under all in the family clique PNP politics and simply choose PDM which has a homogenized cross section of all of the families of the TCI !

Four-wheeled bicycles introduced to the TCI BY DAISY HANDFIELD PARADISE Pedal Cruisers held an official launch last Sunday, where the company introduced an innovative way of riding a bicycle in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The ceremony was held outside of the company’s headquarters in the Salt Mills, in Providenciales. The four wheeled bicycle has multiple seating, powered by the pedalling of the feet. The design of the eco-friendly
pedal vehicles is similar to motor vehicles of the early 1900’s. The two rows of seating include seat belts for passenger safety and is equipped with a wheel for steering, along with a canopy roof for covering from the sun. Co-owner of the Paradise Pedal Cruisers, Jervon Laporte said in an interview that this was a business idea that he had in mind for more than four years. He said: “It is actually something that we saw while we were away four years ago, while taking the kids

social experience; presenting an entirely new way to encounter the streets, byways, and businesses of Providenciales. Guest and locals can rent the cruisers at an hourly rate. They are safe to travel on all roads of the island and are accompanied with a cell phone for emergency
assistance. For more information you can visit the company’s office in the Salt Mills Plaza, unit number 27, in Providenciales. Laporte explained that the store will run from 10 am to 6 pm, and depending on the demand, the store hours might expand.
26 hotel staff receive food handling certificates Woman
fined $1,500 for false police report against man
BY DAISY HANDFIELD MANAGERS, supervisors and chefs from the chain of hotels managed by Waterloo Investments Limited, all received a food handling certification called ServSafe, last Friday. A total of 26 employees from The Alexandra, The Beach House and Blue Haven resort were recipients of certificates, that day, during a brief ceremony at the Blue Haven, in Providenciales. Training and development manager for Waterloo Investments, Wayne Garland, said that it was essential for the chain of staff members to become certified in food handling and to have the proper training, to carry out their designated jobs. “We invest a lot of money and time in training and we want to make sure that those persons working in our Food and Beverage department have the training necessary, for them to be able to carry out their jobs properly. “Food handling is very important and it is something that we take very seriously,” Garland said. Present at the ceremony was hospitality consultant, Jeffrey Rotz, who spoke about the importance of the staff obtaining this certification. “What we have done here for the last few months is we taught them about food safety and the proper handling of food, both front of the house and back of the house staff. “We have a beautiful island with beautiful beaches; we want to make sure we keep our guests safe as soon
Over two dozen hotel staff members receive certification for food handling
as they come here, as far as food goes,” Rotz said. Rotz encouraged other countries to take food handling just as serious. He said: “One thing I am impressed about with the Turks and Caicos is that the Department of Environmental Health is actually
enforcing the rules of food safety. “I have actually travelled to many islands, plus many places in the United States where they have rules, but they just do not enforce them. “By making sure we keep the people safe, we keep the food safe.”
Junior sous chef for the Beach House, Walky Gedeon, said that this was his second time becoming certified in food handling. However, the certificate expires after five years, so after five years employees have tobecome certified again.
A BLUE Hills woman has been fined $1,500 or face ninety days in prison for a report she made to the police and later claimed it was false. On Tuesday (August 9), Sharoona Walkin, 39, the woman who was charged last week with making a false report to the police, pleaded guilty to the offence when she appeared in the Magistrate court. Walkin was charged last Wednesday with wasteful employment of police. The charge stemmed from a police report that Walkin had made at around 8am on Saturday June 25, when she told police that a man known to her had beaten her about her body, pointed a gun at her and made threats to shoot her. As a result of the complaint, police immediately arrested and charged the man. However, shortly after, the woman then told officers that the report she made was false. She was then charged and taken before the Magistrate. As a result of her mitigation (plea for leniency) she was fined $500 less than the law allows. She now has until September 10 to pay the $1,500 fine.

Government making headway with Sovereign Wealth Fund BY OLIVIA ROSE THE GOVERNMENT is making headway in bringing the country`s first Sovereign Wealth fund into fruition. Cabinet on August 3, advised the Attorney General’s Chambers to commence the drafting of the Sovereign Wealth Fund Bill which will bring the fund into effect. The Sovereign Wealth Fund is aimed at creating a mechanism for future budgetary surpluses that will ensure the future economic prosperity of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Government earlier this year announced that model legislation will be laid in the House of Assembly for scrutiny and debate in the third quarter of the financial year. It was noted that the repayment of the UK guaranteed bonds in February saw the Government putting forward its intentions to create a SWF to
safeguard its people and businesses from sudden economic shocks. The framework of a sovereign wealth fund is a valuable tool for achieving certain public policy and macroeconomic goals according to Minister of Finance, Investment and Trade Washington Misick . Misick said the SWF will be established as a savings mechanism for the future. He said: “This consultation will provide individuals, professional bodies, businesses, churches and other stakeholders, with a voice and vital input into how we plan for the future of our country.” Premier Rufus Ewing said at a press conference that after garnering the public’s feedback, it will then inform the necessary policy changes in legislation that will be tabled before the House of Assembly. He noted that the fund will put the Turks and Caicos Islands in an advantageous position in terms of

financial management. “The sovereign wealth fund is an initiative that several countries around the globe have, but very few countries in this region have and most persons would be very familiar with the sinking fund that we’ve created that we’ve worked under for the past three years while in Government.
“And whilst the sinking fund still remains necessary if the Turks and Caicos Islands Government seeks to acquire a loan via some kind of bond, it’s good to have a sinking fund. “But outside of that it’s necessary for this Government to ensure that we can withstand any kind of global economic shock, so that we can have
quick and fast recovery.” He explained that the creation of the sovereign wealth fund will have components to fund infrastructural development on an ongoing basis as well as to provide contingency funding for major catastrophic emergencies such as hurricanes. “In addition to that, to have a prosperity fund is like a heritage fund, so that this generation and generations onward will be able to capitalise on savings that each government will bring into these Islands.” The fund will also support the country’s future credit ratings. Guyana is the latest Caribbean country poised to establish a sovereign wealth fund. The Guyanese government announced on November 25, 2015, that it intends to establish a sovereign wealth fund to enable the country to obtain long-term benefit from its oil and mineral resources.
Former Price Club staff protest for unpaid severance BY DAISY HANDFIELD FORMER staff members of the Price Club Supermarket staged a protest in front of the supermarket this week for being terminated from their jobs, after working with the company for a number of years. They are claiming thousands of dollars in severance payment. Over 40 workers, some who have worked with Price Club for nearly 20 years, were left jobless when the company went out of business this month. A few weeks ago, the store management issued a letter to the staff members, notifying them that the supermarket would close on August 7 and reopen under a new name and under new management. However, former employee, Camilaire Compere confirmed to this reporter that there was no mention of compensation for all of the years that he and other employees have worked for the company. He said: “We will stay here every day until they give us a solution. “Gus [owner of the supermarket] never talks to us about paying us our money; he just closed the store and said nothing to nobody. “We work for many years; we deserve our money.” Compere, who worked with the company as a shelf stocker for the last 18 years, said the owner of the supermarket, Gus Karajianis, told him that he was not paying anyone any money, when approached with the subject of compensation. “He don’t make any meetings

with us; he did not tell us anything. He only give us the letter to say that August 7, everybody should be out. “I spoke to him about pay and he said that he has nothing to pay anyone. “Everybody feels bad because we worked a long time and he is supposed to give us something like every company does in the world. “When you try to do something
like that, you are supposed to make a meeting with the people and give them something, according to the law. “Then you can go ahead and do whatever. For him, he does not make many meeting. He say got no money to pay anybody.” Compere, 55, said that he has worked most of his life and that he is at an age where he was
hoping to retire soon, with his severance pay. A distressed Compere said that he feels as though he was being robbed of all he is entitled to. Other former workers said that they were at the age where it was more difficult to go out and seek new employment. When this reporter initially contacted the owner he said that
compensation would be discussed during the time of closing. However, when contacted the second time, he said the matter was in the hands of his lawyer, who would advisee him on what he should do. Meanwhile, it is reported that new owner Derek Kramer, of Quality Supermarket on Hospital Road, is arranging to take over the Price Club.

Bromeliad Plant Bromeliad plant care is a breeze. Bromeliads are unique, lowmaintenance plants related to pineapples. They don’t need much water and will grow happily in a low light environment. Their tough leaves are impervious to most insects. With their often spotted or striped leaves, bromeliads are more exotic in their appearance than many other plant. They are unique in that they are nearly as striking out of bloom as they are when flowering. Although flowers are not exactly what they produce. A bromeliad produces an inflorescence with colorful bracts. Whatever you call them, they are beautiful and long
lasting when they appear. The leaves of a bromeliad are arranged in a rosette. This forms a natural “cup” which holds water just like a man-made cup does. In the rain forests from which it hails, the bromeliad is an epiphyte. It attaches itself to trees and uses its cup to catch the rain. Because the roots of epiphytes are not really functional, bromeliads have small root systems. Pot your bromeliad in a container just large enough to hold it without tipping over. Use any fast draining potting mix. Something with a lot of peat or bark in it will work nicely. You can water your plant by
pouring water into the cup or onto the soil, or both. Just don’t allow the soil to become saturated. Add a small amount of liquid fertilizer to the water every once in a while. Bromeliads do not need much food. In the wild, these plants often live on the jungle floor where not much sunlight filters through, you can also spot some in our Turks and Caicos bushes, there are air plant, bromeliad. But just because they don’t need bright light does not mean that they don’t need any. A bromeliad’s leaves are so thick and tough that not many insects are interested in feasting
upon them. Unfortunately, they are vulnerable to one of the arch villains of the garden. Scale has two forms: the crawlers which are invisible, and the mature bugs which look like brown dots attached to the leaves. Good bromeliad plant care requires that you check the undersides of the leaves periodically for these beastly pests. If you find them and there are only a few wash them off with a soapy sponge and rinse the plant off. Follow this with a horticultural oil spray. Repeat the soap and oil treatment
each week for a month. Then keep a close eye on the plant so you can catch any re-infestation in the early stages. Each bromeliad plant blooms just once. The inflo can last for months. Once it dies, you can remove it. The mother plant will live for as long another two years. During this time, she will not bloom again, but she will produce pups. These offshoots will emerge all around the base of the momma. Instead of one plant, you’ll end up with a cluster. You can leave the pups with the mom or separate them as you see fit. I think they rebloom quicker if left together.

First Zika case confirmed in the Bahamas THERE is now one confirmed case of the Zika virus in the Bahamas (New Providence), Health Minister Dr Perry Gomez announced on Wednesday morning. Dr Gomez said the country’s first case of Zika was reported in a Bahamian adult male who recently travelled to Jamaica. A sample was taken for testing and a confirmed positive result was received on Tuesday. The patient has been treated for associated symptoms and is recovering, Dr Gomez said. The male presented to a private physician at a private medical facility with symptoms including rash, fever, joint pains and headache. A blood sample was taken for testing and sent to a reference laboratory. A confirmed positive result was received on Tuesday, August 9, 2016. Minister Gomez said the patient has been treated for the associated symptoms and is recovering. He added that the healthcare officials at the Ministry of Health and the Department of Public Health and its Surveillance Unit, in conjunction with officials from the Department of Environmental Health (DEHS), have been collaborating and will continue to collaborate on a number of measures aimed at protection and prevention. The continued collaborations will ensure that the established protocols and follow-ups are undertaken. “This gentleman will have a follow-up with our Surveillance Unit as early as today (Wednesday) so that this information is shared as we continue to work with the Bahamian public as we want them to work with us to keep The Bahamas safe from any potential threat to our public

health,” Dr. Gomez said. Dr. Glen Beneby, Chief Medical Officer for the Ministry of Health, said the quick turn-around in getting a confirmation was as a result of the Ministry’s public/private collaborations on healthcare matters with key stakeholders. “We want the population to be aware and to understand that this is a public health issue and that together, we will try to stem any significant spread of this condition throughout the Commonwealth – not just Nassau, but the Family Islands as well. “Persons need not panic. The Zika virus infection is of major concern due to the confirmed association between infection in pregnancy and birth defects such as Microcephaly. There have also been confirmed cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome in persons infected with Zika virus. “What they should be doing is to be following the established protocols as indicated by the Ministry of Health,
the Department of Public Health, its Surveillance Unit and the Department of Environmental Health – particularly females at child-bearing age and persons who are out at especially night -- regarding the spraying of insect repellant on the skin and following all of the instructions relating to eliminating the potential for contracting Zika such as eliminating stagnant water in our communities, particularly with the rain we have had.” Other forms of prevention/ protection include wearing longsleeved, light coloured clothing; completely screening all doors and windows; sleeping under mosquito nets; the elimination of mosquito breeding sites in and around living spaces by securely covering domestic water containers such as buckets and barrels; properly discarding old tires and containers that collect water (for example bottles and cans) and covering and sealing tanks, soak-aways, garbage bins and cisterns.

Haiti’s ambassador fears Bahamas will get more illegal migrants if political crisis continues THE social, political and economic stability of Haiti hinges on the outcome of its upcoming presidential elections, according to Haitian Ambassador Jean Victor Geneus, who on Tuesday underscored the damning impact another failed bid would have on illegal migration challenges in the Bahamas. The ambassador outlined the mandate set by the beleaguered country’s provisional government led by interim President Jocelerme Privert - as he made the case for greater participation from the region in an interview with The Tribune. “If we don’t want to continue in this political mess,” he said, “we have to do our best to have clean, transparent and democratic elections because there is a cost. “If we don’t solve this problem then we are going to go deeper, deeper into a very volatile, explosive political situation and the consequence is that the Bahamas will receive more refugees.” Mr Geneus added: “That’s why we think it’s very important that our neighbours, Cuba, Bahamas, the US, be informed about what we want to do and also we welcome their support. “We want them to send observers to see for themselves that what is being done is in conformity with the legal process. Observers not only from CARICOM but also local organisations (civil society).” Mr Geneus said he did not think the Bahamas government understood the “full picture,” adding that he has recommended that Haiti’s foreign affairs minister meet with diplomatic representatives of neighbouring countries. Haiti staged its presidential elections in October last year; however, the results were scrapped after an audit revealed findings of significant fraud. The decision to restart the process was decried by international observers, namely the United States and the European
Union, who endorsed the results ahead of the audit report. After spending some $33m on the first attempt, the US announced that it would drop funding to complete the race. The European Union observer mission also announced that it would pull out of the country; however, Mr Geneus told The Tribune that the international body has since given its support for the new elections scheduled for October 9. When asked about the US’ decision to pull funding, Mr Geneus noted that it was a political move because they supported frontrunner Jovenel Moïse - who was endorsed by the previous government under former President Michel Martelly. Mr Geneus said: “The US government indicated that they are not going to financially support the elections but the Haitian government never asked for financial support because the government and all sectors of the society believe that it is important that Haitians stop receiving international funding for elections. We have to do it ourselves because elections are the manifestation of sovereignty and also we had the bad experience with the OAS (Organisation of American States). “They decided to put aside a candidate without any legal practical reasons, so we don’t want this to happen again. We welcome all the observers but they cannot decide that. “We have a very credible electoral council and nobody is trying to influence their work. They are totally independent and autonomous in their actions and activities.” Without a legally elected president by February 2017, Mr Geneus explained that the country risked the dysfunction of all state institutions, its Parliament, Supreme Court, and the government. He noted that it would also jeopardise support from the international community.

Trinidad government to engage Muslim community on ISIS
Yvenia Cleophat saw bandits shoot her husband while on a trip to Haiti last month.
Wife watches husband shot to death in Haiti THE wedding band that represented Yvenia Cleophat’s marriage is now gone — stolen just like the life of her dear husband. Every year the Florida couple planned an out-of-town trip. This year, Yvenia said her husband wanted to visit his mother in Haiti. They took the trip last month but only Yvenia returned. The couple had just got to Haiti and was trying to get local currency when they were attacked at gunpoint by two men who demanded money. “We hear a bunch of noise. ‘Stop! Stop! Freeze!’ There was a guy point a gun in my face and then one on my husband. My husband kept telling them the wallet is right there,” Yvenia said. Yvenia said the men also took her wedding ring, but didn’t stop
there. She watched helplessly as they raised a gun then pulled the trigger, sending the lethal bullet through his skull. “After they took the wallet, I was standing right there when they give him last shot,” she said sobbing. “They shot him right in his forehead. I stand up right there. There’s nothing I can do to help him. There’s nothing.” Yvenia was also shot but survived her injuries. She returned to Cape Coral to her two children. Her young son Marcus is crushed by the loss of his father. He stood somberly by his mother and the coach of his youth football team — speechless and silently tearful. His football team is trying to raise money to pay for Marcel’s funeral. (Winknews.com)
WHY exactly are they going to ISIS? That’s the question the T&T government is giving priority attention to, along with on-going moves to tighten overall security, National Security Minister Edmund Dillon has said. In seeking to examine the factors luring people to leave T&T to join the terror group, Dillon said Government will engage the Muslim community to “dialogue on this and, together, examine root causes.” Dillon was contacted after the T&T Guardian was able to ascertain last Thursday from the security sector that the number of T&T nationals—fighters as well as family members—who have gone to ISIS zones from late 2012 to date is now estimated at close to 120, an increase over previous figures. Most recently, nine TT nationals were detained in Turkey, on July 27. They were held with a Syrian man who was taking them via truck to Syria for recruitment by ISIS, Turkey’s Daily Sabah reported. They are now at Turkey’s Adana Migration Centre. Government is awaiting a report on the circumstances of their presence there from Turkish authorities. Dillon said there had been a lull in the number of people Isis-bound in the latter half of last year, but confirmed the security sector has been “seeing activity.” “In light of what has happened (nine in Turkey) although we’re still uncertain if they were really going to ISIS, we’re examining what factors are luring people to leave T&T to go there; what’s happening locally with that. So we’ll be engaging the

Muslim community to dialogue on this and together examine root causes,” Dillon said. He acknowledged there may be concerns on the length of time to get information on the nine in Turkey, due to perceived “fear of the unknown” on the matter. He explained the time involved—and level of confidentiality—was to ensure that information reaching T&T security, and which would be factored into any approaches, was accurate. The length of time may be due to questioning being done in Turkey. Turkey, in recent years, has been the gateway to Isis conflict zones, since no visa is required for T&T nationals particularly. In January, Turkey’s “Hurriyet News” reported four T&T nationals were held among 913 foreign
jihadists from 57 countries fighting with Isis, over the period January to November 2015. T&T was the only Caribbean country. Last Thursday, security agencies confirmed two T&T nationals returned—sent back—from Turkey in January. They are from Cocorite and Morvant, and were monitored. So far, only one T&T person— Kareen Ibrahim—has been deemed a terrorist under the Anti-Terrorism Act. No T&T nationals have so far been listed on the United Nations’ Security Council’s list of people subject to sanctions for being involved with Al-Qaeda and Isis. But this might change, Dillon confirmed, when T&T pursues action by the Attorney General for court declaration of 74 entities as terrorists, among other measures. (Trinidad Guardian)
Butler-Turner urges her supporters to back Minnis DAYS after saying she “can’t be bought” by the Free National Movement, Loretta Butler-Turner this week made her strongest move since the party’s controversial convention to help heal the wounds in the party as she urged her supporters to back Dr Minnis and his leadership team. Taking a markedly different tone from previous statements, Mrs Butler-Turner appealed for the party and the wider public to be patient with her as she continues to “grow and change”. She also confirmed her acceptance of the party’s nomination to run in the Long Island constituency at the next general election. “It is my fervent hope that unity will be achieved through a spirit of collegiality, dialogue and mutual respect from all within the party,” she said.
Mrs Butler-Turner appealed for the party and the wider public to be patient with her as she continues to “grow and change”.
Her statement marks a remarkable turnaround for her and could prove crucial for the party’s efforts to reverse the impact of highly publicised and caustic infighting that has raised questions about its
ability to successfully challenge the Progressive Liberal Party next year. Indeed, as recently as last week Tuesday Mrs Butler-Turner appeared unprepared to fall in line under Dr Minnis’ leadership.
After Dr Minnis extended an olive branch to her during his closing speech at the party’s convention two weeks ago, on Tuesday she said “I am not for sale” in response to reports that Dr Minnis and his team made offers to her, including one to be made Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Assembly. Given her new pledge to work towards party unity, it is unclear if Bahamians will get a response from the party to accusations from her that its convention election process was rigged. She accused party leadership of engaging in criminal and corrupt behaviour when she dramatically withdrew from the leadership race two weeks ago. On Sunday night, Dr Minnis said the party welcomed her call for unity and said it confirmed the “longstanding belief” that the FMN would unite after the convention.
Mrs Butler-Turner said: “I urge those FNMs who may be thinking of not registering to vote, to please register and to please re-engage with us.” “I ask the FNM voters to support the FNM candidate in their constituency and to encourage FNMs to do likewise. Our task now as FNMs is to regain the trust and the confidence of our core voters and of non-aligned voters. This requires good leadership, the best and brightest candidates, a compelling vision and a viable policy agenda for the country.” Mrs Butler-Turner said: “Those of us who offer for public service must acknowledge error, learn from our mistakes and then set out to become better public servants. In this spirit I take account of public criticism and hope that any errors of mine will be forgiven.”

Economists put cost of UK losing EU single market membership at £75bn IF Britain crashes out of the European single market for goods and services in the wake of the Brexit vote the country could be permanently poorer by 4 per cent of GDP, according to estimates from the Institute for Fiscal Studies. In today’s money that loss equates to roughly £75bn, or £2,900 for each of the country’s 26 million households. The nature of Britain’s future trade relations with the rest of the EU remain deeply uncertain. Before the referendum some leading Leave campaign figures suggested Britain could retain membership of the single market while being outside the EU in the manner of Norway. But other senior European politicians and officials have made it clear they will not accept this arrangement unless Britain continues to make a sizeable contribution to the EU budget and also continues to allow the free movement of European workers into Britain (as Norway does). The signals from Theresa May’s government in recent weeks suggest the “Norway” option is politically impossible and that ministers are preparing to leave the single market and attempt to generate some kind of free trade agreement with the rest of the bloc. If a free trade agreement is not agreed the UK could default to trading goods with the rest of the EU on minimal World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules. But the IFS estimates that

retaining single market membership could be potentially worth 4 per cent of GDP permanently to the UK economy relative to WTO terms by 2030 - equal to two full years of trend growth. They based this figure on longterm estimates from other forecasting organisations such as the London School of Economic’s Centre for Economic Performance and the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR) of the long-term negative impact of Brexit on UK growth. The research organisation also stresses that the cost of losing membership of the single market would far outweigh the economic benefits of the UK no longer paying
in a net £9bn a year into the European Union budget. “The macroeconomic impacts of membership and access are much larger than the importance of direct budgetary issues, even relative to the UK’s full EU contribution” it said. A report from the IFS published before the referendum said lower growth and extra borrowing resulting from the shock of a Leave vote could knock a £20bn to £40bn hole in the Government’s finances by 2020, potentially extending government austerity policies into the next decade. This modelling exercise was also based on the post-Brexit vote (shortterm) economic forecasts from NIESR.

Clinton says Trump incited violence with ‘Second Amendment’ remarks DEMOCRATIC presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has said Donald Trump incited violence when he said gun rights supporters could stop her from winning. Speaking at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs Clinton said “words can have tremendous consequences.” Mr Trump sparked backlash after suggesting “Second Amendment people,” or gun owners, could take action against her. Mrs Clinton also said Mr Trump did not have the temperament to be president. The former secretary of state called out Mr Trump for his recent row with the family of a fallen American Muslim soldier, which the military refers to as a Gold Star family. “Yesterday we witnessed the latest in the long line of casual comments from Donald Trump that cross the line. His casual cruelty to a Gold Star family, his casual suggestion that more countries should have nuclear weapons. And now his casual inciting of violence,” she said. “Every single one of these incidents shows that Donald Trump simply does not have the temperament to be president and commander in chief of the United States. Mr Trump was speaking at a rally in North Carolina on Tuesday when he said Mrs Clinton would put liberal justices on the Supreme Court if she wins the presidency. The Republican nominee suggested her liberal nominations would threaten gun ownership rights when he said: “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the

By the way, and if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. “But the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.” Social media users swiftly responded, condemning Mr Trump for appearing to incite violence. Mr Trump dismissed the claims, tweeting that he was trying to unify gun rights supporters to turn out to vote to defeat Mrs Clinton. His campaign said: “Second Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power.” “And this year, they will be voting in record numbers, and it won’t be for Hillary Clinton, it will be for Donald Trump.” (BBC)
Duke of Westminster Gerald Toothless Florida 68-year-old Cavendish died of a heart attack woman tries to rob bank THE billionaire landowner and philanthropist the Duke of Westminster died of a heart attack, Preston coroner’s office has confirmed. Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor died aged 64 at the Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire on Tuesday after suddenly becoming ill on his Abbeystead Estate. A spokeswoman for the coroner said there would be no inquest because the cause of death was natural. The duke was said to be the third richest person in the UK. He became the sixth Duke of Westminster in 1979 and his fortune was estimated at $10.8bn (£8.3bn), according to Forbes magazine, making him the 68th richest person in the world. Brazil’s Senate indicts Rousseff, opens impeachment trial
The report found African-Americans had been disproportionately targeted.
US government blasts Baltimore police over race A US justice department report has accused police in the city of Baltimore of routinely discriminating against black people and using excessive force. An inquiry was ordered after a young black man, Freddie Gray, died in police custody in April of last year, sparking Baltimore’s worst riots for decades. The report found AfricanAmericans had been disproportionately targeted. Unjustified strip searches were conducted while in one arrest, a black man’s weapon was listed as “his mouth”. In recent years, the justice department has conducted similar investigations into the police in Chicago, Cleveland, Albuquerque and Ferguson, Missouri. Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake responded to Wednesday’s report by promising speedy reforms. The statistics are damning and the individual cases studies are alarming. The report talks of one black man being stopped 30 times in four years without ever being charged and 60 cases of the police being accused of using the N-word in interactions with black people, though only one of those incidents being recorded as the use of a racial slur. But the report’s findings seem to have surprised very few here. The feeling among many is that American policing is beset with systemic racism, with Baltimore having a particularly bad record. The fact that around 40% of the city’s police force is now African American does not appear to have been enough to turn things around. The Department of Justice has recommended a push towards community policing, a style of law enforcement that has been resisted by forces in other parts of the country. “Over the next few months, we will put in place a concrete plan
for change and a new culture - for the good of the city, the police department and the people it protects,” she said in a statement. The report runs to 163 pages. Among the findings: Black residents account for roughly 84% of stops although they represent 63% of the city’s population Black residents make up 95% of the 410 people stopped at least 10 times by officers between 2010 and 2015 Police stopped 34 black residents 20 times, and seven black residents 30 times or more, between 2010 and 2015. No individuals of any other race were stopped more than 12 times In addition to pat-downs, Baltimore officers perform unconstitutional public strip searches, including searches of people who are not under arrest Officers routinely use unreasonable and excessive force, including against juveniles and citizens who are not dangerous or posing an immediate threat The head of the justice department’s civil rights division, Vanita Gupta, told reporters the Baltimore Police Department’s practices had “deeply eroded” trust between officers and the community. “We conclude that there is reasonable cause to believe that BPD engages in a pattern of practice of conduct that violates the constitution and federal anti-discrimination law,” she said. BPD Commissioner Kevin Davis said people were right to be indignant at police behaviour as described in the report. “Citizens can’t be expected to respect an agency if the trust of that agency is breached. There are several instances in this report in which that fragile trust has been breached.” Guilty police officers have been fired, he added. (BBC)
BRAZIL’S Senate voted overwhelmingly this week to indict President Dilma Rousseff on charges of breaking budget laws and to begin an impeachment trial that is expected to oust her from office and end 13 years of rule by the Workers Party. With the eyes of the world on the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, senators in the capital Brasilia voted 59-21 against the suspended leftist leader in a raucous, 16-hour session that began on Tuesday. Her opponents mustered five votes more than they will need to convict Rousseff at the end of the month, allowing interim President Michel Temer to serve the rest of her term through 2018. The result showed Rousseff had even less support in the Senate since the 55-22 vote to suspend her on May 12. She is charged with manipulating government accounts and spending without congressional approval, which her opponents say helped her win re-election in 2014. Wednesday’s vote will strengthen Temer’s hand as he tries to plug Brazil’s fiscal crisis. Critics have blamed Rousseff for an economic recession that could be the country’s worst since the 1930s. Temer, Rousseff’s conservative former vice president, has urged senators to wrap up the trial quickly so he can move ahead with a plan to cap public spending and enact pension reforms in hopes of restoring investor confidence in government

finances. Spokesman Marcio de Freitas said Temer is confident Rousseff’s impeachment is irreversible and Wednesday’s vote will give him more muscle to negotiate with Congress the reforms he believes are needed. Temer also hopes to be confirmed as president in time to attend the summit of the G20 group of leading world economies in China on Sept. 4, Freitas told Reuters. The move to replace Rousseff with the more business-friendly Temer has bolstered Brazil’s currency against the dollar and boosted shares on the Sao Paulo stock market more than 30 percent since January, placing them among the world’s best performing assets. The real strengthened to 3.13 reais
to the dollar on Wednesday. It had weakened as low as 4.16 in January. Rousseff has denied wrongdoing and denounced her impeachment as a right-wing conspiracy that used an accounting technicality to illegally remove a government that improved the lot of Brazil’s poor. “The cards are marked in this game. There is no trial, just a sentence that has already been written,” Workers Party Senator Jorge Viana said in a speech to the chamber. The impeachment, he said, was driven by elite opponents of social welfare gains. Rousseff’s critics say her interventionist economic policies and inability to govern led to the debacle in Latin America’s largest country, and she should not be allowed to return.

Details of which characters Rihanna and Anne Hathaway will play, along with the plot is not yet known.
Rihanna and Hathaway ‘join Ocean’s Eight cast’ RIHANNA and Anne Hathaway have signed up for the upcoming allfemale Ocean’s Eight movie, according to reports. They will be joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and rapper Awkwafina, The Hollywood Reporter said. Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett are also said to be appearing in the heist movie, which begins filming in October. The movie is a spin-off from George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s hit Ocean’s franchise. The all-female version will be helmed and co-written by Gary Ross, who previously directed The Hunger Games
and Pleasantville. It will be produced by Steven Soderbergh, who directed Clooney’s Ocean’s Eleven. The new film, dubbed Oceans Ocho, follows on the heels of the recent all-female remake of Ghostbusters, which failed to meet up to box office expectations. Released in 2001, Ocean’s Eleven told the story of career thief Danny Ocean and his 10 accomplices who plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos at the same time. A remake of the 1960 Rat Pack movie starring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, it was followed up with two sequels. (BBC)

ED Sheeran is being sued in America over claims that Thinking Out Loud rips off a Marvin Gaye song. The family of the man who co-wrote Let’s Get It On says it copies key parts of the track. Ed Townsend’s relatives are asking for a jury to decide if they’re owed damages. “The Defendants copied the heart of Let’s and repeated it continuously throughout Thinking,” the court papers claim. “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions
of Thinking are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of Let’s,” it says. There’s been no response yet from Ed Sheeran or his record label. The lawyer representing the Marvin Gaye estate told Newsbeat they were “aware” of comparisons with the 1973 hit. CBS says network ‘needs to do better’ to fix lack of diversity WHEN CBS debuts its six new shows this fall, viewers will notice one obvious similarity: six white male leading stars. The network has noticed, too. CBS Entertainment President Glenn Geller was bombarded with questions about its lack of diversity during Wednesday’s 2016 Television Critics’ Association press tour and Geller admitted the channel needs “to do better,” according to Entertainment Weekly. “I’m really glad this question came up first because we’re very mindful at CBS about the importance of diversity and inclusion — and I’m glad we’re having this conversation first,” he explained. Geller acknowledged CBS was “definitely less diverse” than last year when it came to

selecting its leading actors. “But in terms of overall diversity in our new shows, we were actually more diverse this year than last year, and I think
that that’s our commitment to diversity. It is ongoing,” he continued. Out of the 16 new series regulars cast, Geller said 11 of
them “are diverse.” That included Aisha Tyler being bumped to a main cast member on “Criminal Minds,” along with Adam Rodriguez. “I know they’re not leads, but 11 are diverse and that is our commitment to diversity and those just aren’t words. That is real action … I wouldn’t say we’re mitigating anything,” Geller continued. The broadcast executive also suggested critics look behind the camera for diversity. “Our writers are more diverse than last year, our directors—and we’re not finished booking every slot but we’re on track,” he said. The network has long been plagued with diversity issues, as several reporters quickly pointed out at the TCA. This upcoming season will see the following six actors in lead roles: Matt LeBlanc, Kevin James, Joel McHale, Michael Weatherly, Lucas Till and Augustus Prew. Geller stressed throughout the discussion the “need to do better.” “I hear you, I really do and I understand that we need to better. I do want to point out though, that in the ensemble casting, we are more diverse this year than last year, and that is forward progress,” he said. Geller was also asked about increasing LGBT characters.
Colton Haynes was bullied as a teen and ostracised by his parents when he told them he was gay.
Gay “Teen Wolf” actor blamed for father’s death ACTOR Colton Haynes was blamed for his father’s death because of his sexual orientation. “I’m the last person in the world who would say, ‘Oh, my dad, pity me,’” he told Out magazine in its September issue. “But I was told that my dad killed himself because he found out I was gay.” The “Teen Wolf” star and Kansas native said his parents were unsupportive when he came out to them, even though the then-14-year-old was being bullied at school. Haynes told the magazine that things were so bad at home, he ran away for three weeks and slept in a friend’s closet. Shortly after, a relative called to tell him his dad, William, had killed himself by overdosing on Oxycodone pills. His family immediately pointed the finger at the actor. “My brother and my mom
went to pick up my dad’s stuff, and the only picture on his fridge was my eighth-grade graduation picture. So I was just like, f---,” he told the magazine. Haynes, 28, came out publicly in May in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, but he’s not proud of keeping the secret from his fans. “I feel really bad that I had to lie for so long, But I was told that was the only way I was going to be successful. When you’re young in this industry, people take advantage of you, and they literally tell you that your dreams are going to come true,” Haynes added. He’s currently single and “couldn’t tell you how long” it’s been since he’s been in a relationship. The “Arrow” stud is looking for “someone who just descended from a mountain and said, ‘I don’t have any friends. Would you like to come live with me?’”

Seas aren’t just rising, scientists say —they’re speeding up
The babies with suspected Zika infection that were studied had been born with hip, knee, ankle, elbow, wrist and/or finger joint problems that fit with a medical diagnosis called arthrogryposis.
Zika linked to baby joint deformities ZIKA infection during pregnancy may cause limb joint deformities in the baby, experts now fear. Brazilian researchers from Recife, the city at the centre of the Zika epidemic, describe seven suspect cases in the journal The BMJ. The virus, which has been spreading across much of the Americas and has deterred some people from visiting the Olympic host country, is already known to cause a serious baby brain defect. Mothers-to-be are urged to be vigilant. Pregnant women should not travel to areas with Zika, and those living in Zika zones should avoid the biting mosquitoes that carry and spread the disease. Experts now agree that Zika is capable of causing lasting brain damage to babies in the womb. The virus can cross the placenta from the mother to her unborn child. And there is growing evidence
that it can trigger a rare, weakening condition of the nerves, called Guillian-Barre syndrome, in adults. Dr Vanessa van der Linden and her team in Brazil say they are now seeing limb joint problems in newborn babies that might be caused by Zika too. The seven babies with suspected Zika infection that they studied in hospital had been born with hip, knee, ankle, elbow, wrist and/or finger joint problems that fit with a medical diagnosis called arthrogryposis. The deformities of arthrogryposis, or crooked joints, are caused by faulty muscles - some too tight or contracted and some too flaccid that have pulled and held the baby’s growing body in unnatural positions. Dr Linden’s team suspect the Zika virus attacks brain nerve centres supplying the muscles around the joints, rather than the joints themselves. Scans of the babies’ brains appear to support this idea.
On a warming Earth, seas inevitably rise, as ice on land melts and makes its way to the ocean. And not only that — the ocean itself swells, because warm water expands. We already know this is happening — according to NASA, seas are currently rising at a rate of 3.5 millimeters per year, which converts to about 1.4 inches per decade. However, scientists have long expected that the story should be even worse than this. Predictions suggest that seas should not only rise, but that the rise should accelerate, meaning that the annual rate of rise should itself increase over time. That’s because the great ice sheets, Greenland and Antarctica, should lose more and more mass, and the heat in the ocean should also increase. The problem, or even mystery, is that scientists haven’t seen an unambiguous acceleration of sea level rise in a data record that’s considered the best for observing the problem — the one that began with the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite, which launched in late 1992 and carried an instrument, called a radar altimeter, that gives a very precise measurement of sea level around the globe. (It has since been succeeded by other satellites providing similar measurements.) This record actually shows a decrease in the rate of sea level rise from the first decade measured by satellites (1993 to 2002) to the second one (2003 to 2012). “We’ve been looking at the altimeter records and scratching our heads, and saying, ‘why aren’t we seeing an

acceleration in the satellite record?’ We should be,” said John Fasullo, a climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. In a new study in the open-access journal Scientific Reports, however, Fasullo and two colleagues say they have now resolved this problem. It turns out, they say, that sea level rise was artificially masked in the satellite record by the fact that one year before the satellite launched, the Earth experienced a major cooling pulse. The cause? The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, which filled the planet’s stratosphere with aerosols that reflected sunlight away from the Earth and actually led to a slight sea level fall in ensuing years as the ocean temporarily cooled.
“What we’ve shown is that sea level acceleration is real, and it continues to be going on, it’s ongoing, and we understand why you don’t see it in the short satellite record,” said Fasullo, who conducted the research along with scientists from the University of Colorado in Boulder and Old Dominion University. The study was performed using a suite of 40 climate change models to determine how the Pinatubo eruption affected seas and the global distribution of water. The scientists estimate as a result that sea level not only fell between 5 and 7 millimetres due to a major ocean cooling event in the eruption’s wake, but then experienced a rebound, or bounce back, of the same magnitude once the influence of the eruption had passed.
Asthma pill ‘promising’ for people with severe symptoms AN experimental pill could help adults with severe asthma, an early study in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal suggests. In the small trial, patients who were given the drug, known as Fevipiprant, had less inflammation in their airways. And some patients with uncontrolled asthma felt their symptoms improved. Charity Asthma UK said the research showed “massive promise and should be greeted with cautious optimism”. More than five million people in the UK have asthma, a long-term condition that affects the airways in the lungs and can cause a cough, wheezing and breathlessness. For most people the right treatment - for example, inhalers can help control it, but some people
have more persistent symptoms. And flare-ups can be lifethreatening. According to Asthma UK, 1,216 people died from asthma in 2014. In this study, scientists at the University of Leicester looked at 60 patients who had severe asthma despite using steroid inhalers and being seen regularly by specialists. Half the group were given the Fevipiprant pill for three months on top of their usual medications and the other half continued to take their normal medication as well as a placebo pill. Researchers found that while patients took Fevipiprant, they had fewer inflammatory blood cells in their phlegm and airways - which can be key signs of asthma. Gaye Stokes, who has had severe asthma for 16 years, said: “I knew
straight away that I had been given the drug. “I felt like a completely different person. I had more get up and go, I was less wheezy and for the first time in years, I felt really, really well.” The 54-year-old added that once she stopped taking the drug her asthma deteriorated again. But researchers say this is still an early proof-of-concept study and larger, long-term trials will be needed to see if the pill can help patients in everyday life. Meanwhile, Dr Samantha Walker at Asthma UK said: “This research shows massive promise and should be greeted with cautious optimism. “The possibility of taking a pill instead of using an inhaler will be a very welcome one, particularly as this study focused on people who develop the condition in later life,

some of whom we know can struggle with the dexterity required to use an inhaler. “More research is needed and we’re a long way off seeing a pill for asthma being made available over the pharmacy counter, but it’s an exciting development.” Prof Stephen Durham, a lung
specialist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, said: “Prof Chris Brightling’s group in Leicester provide compelling evidence that the novel tablet treatment has the ability to reduce asthmatic inflammation, increase lung function and improve asthma control in this severe group.

Sports Interational Williams leaves Rio after heart-breaking crash out of women’s singles at the Olympics
Simone Biles has won the all-around title at the World Championships in the each of the last three years.
Rio Olympics 2016: Biles dominates to win allaround gymnastic gold AMERICAN gymnast Simone Biles produced a stunning performance to win the women’s all-around Olympic gold medal. Biles, 19, who has won 10 World Championship medals since 2013, scored 62.198 to claim her first Olympic medal by a margin of more than two points. Compatriot Alexandra Raisman got silver with Russia’s Aliya Mustafina third. Great Britain’s Ellie Downie came 13th, narrowly missing out on becoming the best performing female British gymnast in an Olympic allaround final. Britain’s Max Whitlock
had won a bronze medal in the men’s event on Wednesday, but Downie’s medal hopes ended with a poor score on her third apparatus, the uneven bars, before she made another error on beam. Those mistakes saw her drop down from seventh to 13th, to miss out on emulating her sister Becky Downie, who came 12th in the all-around final at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Ellie Downie, the winner of the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in 2015, gained a total of 56.883 after scores of 14.3 on floor, 15.1 on vault, 13.783 on uneven bars and 13.7 on beam. SHE was devastated after crashing out of the Olympics. And on Wednesday Serena Williams was seen looking downcast as she caught a flight out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil following her dreams of attaining a fifth gold medal foreclosed. The 34-year-old kept her head low as she went through security, while dragging her luggage filled with athletic gear behind her. The former Olympian wore a grey long sleeve top, leggings and pink trainers. Meanwhile, earlier this week the world number one appeared to have a shoulder problem and was close to tears as she lost 6-4 6-3 to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. Serena and sister Venus are the most successful players in Olympic tennis history with four gold medals each but Rio has been dreadful for the family. Venus lost in the opening round of the singles to Kirsten Flipkens while the sisters lost their first ever Olympic doubles match on Sunday. Serena won gold in both events in London four years ago and appeared to have put doubts about her form to bed by winning her 22nd grand slam singles title at Wimbledon last month. The 34-year-old’s exit means Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys are the only top-eight seeds remaining of what had appeared a very strong field. Serena looked like she might turn things around when she recovered from 1-3 to 3-3 in the second set but

victory. “Delpo was the better player and he deserved to win. That’s sport,” Djokovic told reporters. “In the decisive moments, he just came up with some extraordinary tennis and I have to congratulate him. “It’s very sad and disappointing to go out of the tournament this early but I am glad that a good friend of mine, who has struggled with injuries, has won.

wide on the third. Serena pulled out of a tournament in Montreal two weeks prior to the Olympics with a shoulder problem and it appears that has resurfaced. The top seed declined to speak to the press but gave a brief interview to a member of the US support team. Sounding hoarse, she said: ‘ The better player today won but I can’t wait for next time and I know next time is going to be a really good match and I look forward to it. ‘It was a great opportunity. It didn’t work out the way I wanted it to but at least I was able to make it to Rio, that was one of my goals.’ Asked if she got the impression Serena was injured, Svitolina, the world number 20 and 15th seed here, said: ‘ Yes I got the feeling but I was trying to stop thinking about it, just stay in the moment and play the ball, don’t play against Serena Williams and Olympic champion, so many grand slams. ‘Even at that moment I didn’t expect that I could win. I think that helped me a lot, don’t expect a mistake from her and just fight and be focused.’ The 21-year-old now has her sights set on the biggest prize, saying: ‘ For me the Olympics is just unreal. To win a gold medal in the Olympics is so special and if I can do it it’s going to be just unreal.’ The tournament has now lost the top seeds in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, while Andy Murray is the only defending champion remaining. Sports Interational ‘We played brilliant cricket’ - Gayle on CPL title CAPTAIN of the Jamaica Tallawahs, Chris Gayle, has described as equally special the feeling of topping the 2016 HERO Motocorp Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 competition when compared to winning the inaugural staging of the championship. In what was their second hold on the coveted title, symbol of regional Twenty20 supremacy, twotime finalists Tallawahs defeated three-time finalists Guyana Amazon Warriors by a crushing nine wickets in the final at Warner Park in St Kitts on Sunday night. The triumph added to their victory over the said opponents in 2013 at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago. “It’s right up there as with winning the first one,” stated Gayle, who emerged as the top six-hitter during the near two-monthlong tournament, which was played

across six Caribbean countries and in Florida, USA “I thought we played brilliant cricket, especially at home, before we lost the momentum in Florida when we lost two games in a row, and we came here and lost against
Guyana in the first semi-final playoff. “But then, we said, ‘Listen, we can’t lose four games in a row’, and we won against Trinidad in the second playoff to keep the momentum with us heading into the final.”
ALIENS are more likely to land in London than Leicester City defending their Premier League title, according to Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri. The champions, a 5,000-1 shot for the title last season, begin their campaign at Hull City on Saturday. Ranieri, 64, expects Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City to mount strong challenges after the Foxes finished 10 points clear last term. “It’s easier for ET to come to Piccadilly Circus,” said the Italian. “It is impossible. It is more difficult than last season. It is normal that we can’t win the league. For this
reason I say the bookmakers must do 6,000-1. “I am very curious, all the world is curious, what will happen with Leicester. I am very curious to see where we finish.” Ranieri, who signed a new contract until 2020 on Wednesday, believes all the “big teams” faltering in the same campaign “only happens once in a lifetime”. “Of course the big teams are ready to fight for the title, we are ready to defend our title but we know it is a difficult gap - last season we made something unbelievable,” added the former Chelsea boss.

Michael Phelps continues to dominate the Olympics.
pole vaulter Phelps is officially the greatest Russian Isinbayeva wants athletics role Olympian in 2,168 years Michael Phelps has broken plenty of records in his swimming career, but only one was 2,168 years in the making. When the 31-year-old phenomenon earned his 12th individual gold medal(20th overall) in the men’s 200-meter butterfly, he also tied record for most individual wins in Olympics history, set in 152 BC by Leonidas of Rhodes, according to Olympic historian Bill Mallon. An esteemed runner, Leonidas
won three events – the stadion (a sprint), the diaulos (a longer run) and the hoplite race (a run performed while wearing armor) – in four straight Olympiads. Mallon, a former professional golfer and leading authority on the history of the Olympic Games, reached way, way into the history books to share the amazing statistic. Phelps has a number of records for the modern Olympics, which began in 1894: the most medals of any athlete in Olympic history, the most gold medals
in any one Olympic Games (eight in Beijing), as well as world records in a number of events including the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly, the 400-meter individual medley, and the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter freestyle relays. Phelps extended his record for the most golds of any Olympian ever Tuesday night with his 200-meter butterfly win as well as a team win in the 4x200-meter men’s relay, collecting his 20th and 21st first place medals. DOUBLE Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva has announced she will run for president of the Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF). Russian track and field athletes were banned from the 2016 Olympics following claims of state-sponsored doping. The 34-year-old, who won gold in Athens and Beijing, was among 68 athletes to appeal against the ban. “The chance to help Russian athletes return to the elite is a huge motivation for me,” she said. “It will be some sort of
compensation for not being able to compete in Rio. I want our athletes to take part in international competitions.” Isinbayeva, who has never failed a test in her career, wants to replace Dmitri Shlyakhtin when he steps down in November. Russia was suspended from track and field events by the International Association of Athetics Federations (IAAF) in November 2015 following the publication of an independent World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) report that showed a culture of widespread, state-sponsored doping.

Robinson “very proud” of former Panthers athlete Smith
Teray Smith will be in action from Tuesday in the 200M heats in Rio.
FOUNDER of the Panthers Track Club Judith Robinson is elated that one of the club’s former athletes has become an Olympian. Teray Smith, who represented the TCI national team in athletics before he moved on to the Bahamas’ national team, will run the 200M preliminaries next Tuesday and Robinson, will be there to see it. “I’m very proud of his accomplishments and that I had a very small part to play in his development as an athlete and as a respectable young man. I wish him all the best at this level of his career in sports.” Robinson, TCI’s current Director of Sport, will also be at the venue to support Delano Williams, who is running on Friday and Saturday.
The now 21-year-old Smith was a member of the Provo based track club from 2008-2011. Outside of sprinting, he also played basketball, hockey (PHL) and later when he left the TCI to study in the US, he played American football. Robinson, remembers Smith, who was born in the US to parents from the TCI and the Bahamas, for his ability to learn and improve. “When Teray started out in track and field he did not have the proper techniques, but through the years he quickly developed and in his development, he always encouraged his teammates. He was a quiet, shy boy, but when he had to speak he spoke boldly about what he wanted to address. I have followed him through his growth in sports. When
Alexander leads Beaches to cricket victory in low scoring clash AN all-round performance from Jessie Alexander led Beaches to a four-wicket victory when action resumed in the HAB Group sponsored TCICA Summer T20 Cricket Competition at the Downtown Ball Park in Providenciales on Sunday last. Beaches won the toss and inserted the Mitsubishi Electric Tigers to take first strike. Opener Gareth Butler held his innings together until the eighth over, but at the other end wickets tumbled. Eventually the team was bowled out for 83 in the 14th over. Butler struck four boundaries in his 24 ball 22 runs, but none of the other top order batsmen reached double figures. Chabbey Challery (2), Damian St. Ange (1), Marlon Graham (7) and Vikram John (4) were all back in the pavilion before
the seventh over. The bowling attack was led by Pawan who picked up 4-32, including the prize wicket of Butler caught and bowl. Opening bowler Alexander was also in the thick of things with 3-14 from four overs. Needing to score at just 4.2 runs per over, Beaches stumbled early and ended up losing six wickets before reaching the target in the 16th over. Number three batsman Alexander, who started his innings with a boundary and finished with a total of six fours, led the attack with 36 unbeaten runs from 45 balls. Another in-form batsman, Danar Lewis, smashed three fours and a six off 12 balls for 21 runs. Challery led the bowling attack with 3-18, while there was one wicket each for St. Ange and Caleb Winnick.

From the time Teray was selected on the Bahamas’ CARIFTA team he just counted to shine.” The former CARIFTA Games gold medallist, who made the Olympics qualifying time last year, had told the Weekly News that he will take it one step at a time in Rio. “My main goal is to make it out of the 200m heats, where I will have to fight in the semi-finals to get a spot in the final.” The Auburn University student is also hoping to break the Bahamas’ national 200M record this year. His current PB is 20.34s. If Smith makes it out of the heats, he will be in action on Wednesday night in the semis. The final will take place on Thursday night.

Williams “fit and ready” for Rio Olympics A COOL, calm and collected Delano Williams has tapered off his excitement about the Rio Olympics and is just focused on the task at hand, that is to win an Olympic medal when Britain competes in the 4X400M relay event next Friday and Saturday in Brazil. The Grand Turk born sprinter, the first TC Islander to make the Olympics, said that he feels in fine form. “I’m in the middle about excitement. Well there is no pressure on me because I believe in my form and my current fitness so I’m just used to it.” The 22-year-old, who did not compete in the Opening Ceremony last Friday, was training at a holding camp in Belo Horizonte (440 km from Rio). I’m working hard over here to ensure I do my part in the relay and ensure we come out with something come next week Saturday.” NOT ENOUGH RESPECT As TCI anticipates the historic moment, Williams pointed to the lack
of support at the highest level that he has received over the years. He said that “this is the first time the country is actually behind me in something”. “I feel the love slight, a bit, but I’m not banking on love.” Despite switching allegiance a few years ago to Great Britain, the sprinter has stayed loyal to the TCI by establishing the Delano Williams Sports Foundation, which has helped local athletes over the last few years. “I have done so much for the country and if I don’t get the respect and positive attitude from the leaders, I can only say that I have done my part. I will let the people speak for me.” Williams, who still holds the national 100M and 200M sprinting records said he hopes his Olympics participation could change the perception of all Turks Islanders, especially those in power. He is also looking to be the catalyst for change when it comes to recognising the importance of sports in the islands and support for local athletes.
Delano Williams says that he is ready to play his part in the 4X400M relay which starts next Friday in Rio.
“I hope when I come home there are incentives for me. In terms of sponsorships, companies joining my
foundation….” The first round of the 4X400M relay is set to start at 19:10h on
August 19, while the event’s final will take place on August 20 from the same time.
TCI looking to compete in CONCACAF U15 Championships in 2017 and 2018 – Says TCIFA President Bien-Aime THE Turks and Caicos Islands U15 girls might compete in the CONCACAF U15 Girls’ Championships for the first time in 2018 according to TCIFA President Sonia Bien-Aime. In an invited comment this week the CONCACAF Executive member said that the FA is hoping to get a girls’ team ready for the tournament in two years. She also indicated that the boys
are already registered for next year’s CONCACAF U15 tournament. Bien Aime, who sits on the FIFA Council, pointed out that the U15 tournaments will help to advance the experience of the young players. “It’s crucial for our youth development programmes as it provides the opportunity to play competitive games at this stage whilst preparing them for the U17 qualifiers and other tournaments.”
CONCACAF Executive member Sonia Bien-Aime opened the 2016 version of Girls’ U15 Championships this week in Florida.
