Opposition leader calls illegal building fines ‘unsustainable’ BY DELANA ISLES LEADER of the Opposition, Washington Misick is not as impressed with the changes to the Physical Planning Ordinance as much of his parliamentary counterparts, calling the move “unsustainable”. During his presentation to the debate, the party leader gave a scathing review of the amendment, even as he threw his support behind it. As reported in the last issue of the Weekly News, the amendment would authorise the Department of Planning to issue tickets which require the payment of a fine as part of the enforcement of the planning regulations, to those who are in contravention of the ordinance and the building codes of the Turks and Caicos Islands. When the amendment bill was introduced to the House of Assembly, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Planning, Goldray Ewing, stated that in order for the Department of Planning to be more effective in carrying out its mandate, the ordinance must be updated, giving it more teeth to enable the department to swiftly carry out enforcement when there are breaches of the law. However, an underwhelmed Misick stated that while the move is a positive one, it is but a tiny step compared to what needs to be done when it comes to developing the territory’s sustainably.

“I am not quite as overwhelmed as some people are, despite the fact that it is an initiative that is positive and one that is a small step in a whole major remaking of what we need to be doing in this country for development sustainability.” He stated that there needs to be a common-sense approach, backed with such policy, when it comes to sustainable development in the territory because business as usual no longer works. However, he acknowledged that there are or may be some resource constraints and or availability in order to execute such policy. LIVEABLE COMMUNITIES “I think we have an obligation in these Islands to provide liveable communities to everyone who lives here; in fact adequate housing is a human right under the United Nations charter and it doesn’t mean necessarily property ownership,” he said. “While we should look at this as sort of a band aid approach or something like a holding pattern, I don’t think we can look at this and expect a tremendous remaking of the landscape as a result of this amendment, it is just not going to happen because all of the other pieces of the puzzle are just not there.” He added that in his view, sustainable urban development must be guided by sustainable planning and a management vision

that promotes inter connected green spaces - including the transportation system. “I noticed that provisions that were made for green spaces have now been removed from the budget going forward. “The problem that we face in these Islands as it relates to sustainable development is one that we all have to work with together, including the Government and the private and public sectors if we are going to create sustainable and liveable communities.” Misick noted that there is now an opportunity to create liveable communities as it relates to housing. “So, if we are going to speak about ‘Beautiful by Nature’ and high-end tourism, we also have to come up with a way to forcefully and fairly deal with the problem of shanties in these Islands. “But to invoke the fear of God or threat, without providing the resources and a policy and framework for dealing with the housing issue is not going to solve the problem, because ultimately if you are talking about building resorts and growing the economy you are going to need labour to do it.”

Leader of the Opposition, Charles Washington Misick

He further explained: “When somebody is living in an unsafe community, without toilets, running water or without a safe place for the kids to play, and then they end up going to a restaurant as a waiter or a chambermaid in a hotel, without the proper sanitation and are potentially taking virus or some other illness into the property. “These are some of the farreaching impact that unsustainable

development has for the economy.” He noted: “It would seem to me that congratulating ourselves for mediocrity is a problem and has always been one in these Islands. “While I support this move, like I said I don’t think it is the giant step for mankind or have to have if it is going to be sustainable.” “I would encourage those persons whose remit it falls under, to look at all of these issues in concern.”

MEMBERS of the public, the police and family of John Parker are appealing to the driver of the vehicle that struck him down and killed him to please come forward. On Friday, February 9, the 73-year-old was hit by a vehicle in Five Cays. The incident took place at about 11pm. It was reported to the 911 Centre that an unresponsive man was found lying in the main roadway coming out of Five Cays. Reports are that Parker’s body was found a few feet from his apartment. His phone, wallet and keys were not found on his person. Family members related to news outlet Magnetic Media that Parker was a carpenter and mason,

and was crossing the street to go home when he was hit by the unknown driver. Kendra Parker, Parker’s niece, told the news outlet that the family is distraught and desperately hoping for the person responsible to come out of the shadows. “We just want whoever it is that did this to come forward, to say what happened and to help to bring some closure for the family.” Ms Parker explained that her uncle was not only found “unresponsive” but stripped of his wallet which held his identification and salary. “It was someone at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre that recognised my uncle and called

the family. He had nothing on him and for a while, no one knew who he was.” Parker says this was no way for her uncle to be treated, “his wallet, his house keys, his cell phone, his IDs were all taken.” Up to press time, police said that they had still not gotten any additional information that may lead to the apprehension of whomever may be responsible for the man’s death. Anyone with information into this incident, no matter how small, can contact Chalk Sound Police Station on 338-5901 or 941-8082 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800- 8477. (Delana Isles)

Man, 23, arrested over Blue Hills home raids

POLICE have arrested a 23-yearold man in connection with a recent string of home invasions and robberies in Blue Hills. The man, who police have not yet named, was arrested on Friday, February 9, and is being held on remand at Chalk Sound Police Station. He is alleged to be one of the perpetrators responsible for several robberies that occurred in Snake Hill a little over a week ago. He has not yet been charged with any offence. A second man, 21, was arrested on Friday and charged on Saturday for handling stolen goods in relation to the same matter. This week Commissioner of Police James Smith bragged in a press statement about serious crime dropping by 36 percent in the last quarter of 2017. He said the force recorded 426 crimes, down from 667 during the same period the year before. However, he said that the attention

of the force is on capturing the criminals responsible for the recent spate of crime. “We recognised a small rise in armed criminality recently in the Blue Hills area and we are actively targeting those responsible,” he said. “My officers will continue to monitor crime patterns, target offenders and bring offenders to justice.” Governor John Freeman, who is responsible for internal security, was unavailable for comment on the crime spree up until press time.

HOME INVASIONS On Sunday, February 4, at 11.45pm, a man in the Snake Hill area on Millennium Highway contacted 911 after he and his wife were awakened by two men with handguns. The culprits, one dressed in blue pants and a blue t-shirt and the other in a green shirt and blue pants, made way with money and two cell phones.

Just minutes after that robbery, at 11.50pm a man, also of Millennium Highway, requested police assistance after he was awakened by two men with handguns. According to the complainant, one of the men was wearing a blue shirt and pants and the other, a green shirt and blue pants. The culprits got away with two Samsung galaxy phones and $25 cash. An hour later, on Monday, February 5, at 12.47am, the 911 centre received a report from a man at home in Snake Hill, Millennium Highway. He said a man dressed in black entered his house with a firearm and took his cell phone and money and fled the scene. Just minutes afterwards, at 12.59am another resident of Snake Hill, reported to 911 that two masked men entered his apartment, both with firearms and demanded money.

A watch, cell phone and money were taken. The culprits fled by foot. Police said they received another report on that same day, at about 12.48am, when a man contacted 911 and reported that he was held at gunpoint at his home by a masked man in Blue Hills. The culprit left with $65. On that same day, at an undisclosed time by police, the 911 centre received a report of a robbery in Blue Hills. The complainant stated that he and a friend were approached by two armed males, one wearing all black, the other all white. They were stripped of their two cell phones, a watch and identification cards. Also on Monday at 3.13am, a man contacted the 911 centre to report a burglary in Blue Hills. Among items missing were one black wallet, one Samsung Galaxy phone valued at $350, a black handbag and a cream colour

handbag. Police are also investigating another report made that same day by a man of Boddle Way, Blue Hills, who stated that between 1.30am and 2.30am he was forced to leave his home with gunmen to drive to the ATM machine. He was then forced to withdraw $1,000 from the ATM machine, after the bandits had already stolen $300 the complainant’s home. The complainant described the culprits as two masked men, one dark in complexion, about five feet seven inches, slim build, wearing dark clothing, with both hands covered with socks. The second man was of dark complexion, about six feet tall, slim build, wearing dark clothing, and both hands covered with socks. Anyone with information can contact police at Chalk Sound Police Station on 338-5901 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1-8008477.

Serious crime down 36% at end of 2017 BY OLIVIA ROSE SERIOUS crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands was down 36 percent at the end of last year due to a number of crime-fighting strategies, TCI’s police chief said. According to a press statement issued on Wednesday (February 14), the Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force recorded a sharp decline in crime for the third quarter of 2017, from October to December. Commissioner of Police James Smith said the force recorded 426 crimes, down from 667 in the same period the year before. He said: “In that period, we have detected 28 percent of reported crimes, up

from 22 percent for the same period last year.” The commissioner added that from April to December 2017 there were 1,756 crimes recorded. This was 279 fewer than 2016, or a drop of 14 percent, and 582 fewer than the same nine months the year before. Smith said it is pleasing to note that, even though the data collected is only for nine months, the average numbers of crimes per day has decreased from nine in the 2015 and 2016 period, to seven in 2016 and 2017, and currently sits at five crimes per day. Turning his attention to a spike in robberies across the territory, Smith stressed that although there has been a downward trend in criminal activities, the force will not grow complacent.

He said the spate of armed robberies in Snake Hill, Blue Hills, earlier this month is of grave concern. “We recognised a small rise in armed criminality recently in the Blue Hills area and we are actively targeting those responsible. “My officers will continue to monitor crime patterns, target offenders and bring offenders to justice.” Commissioner Smith has urged the community to work closely with the police to keep their communities, businesses and by extension the country safe. Anyone with information can contact Chalk Sound Police Station on 338-5901 or make use of the confidential reporting system through Crime Stoppers on 1-8008477.

Sports minister says Leeward Green Park will be opened BY DELANA ISLES AS STATED by the Minister of Education, Youth, Sports, Culture and Library Services, Karen Malcolm, the controversial Leeward Green Park will be opened. From her response to questions posed to her in the House of Assembly, that opening will happen at some undefined point in the future. Malcolm’s statement was in relation to questions raised by former sports minister Akierra Missick, who as minister spearheaded the park project, during a House meeting at the beginning of February. Missick was enquiring after the park’s post hurricane repairs, works to be carried out and its subsequent opening. Although stating that no survey has as yet been carried out by her ministry to assess the damage sustained at the Leeward Park, the sports minister did give some assurance that a damage assessment will eventually be carried out. “A detailed damage assessment has not been conducted, this will have implications on how soon the necessary works will be performed and subsequently on the opening of the park.” She added: “The site will be managed by the Ministry of Sport which will provide oversight to the facility with a custodian who will manage the park and the sporting facilities at the location. “A manager will work with public

works to ensure that it is properly maintained.” Asked when the assessment will be conducted, Malcolm said that one will be done shortly. The park has been a point of controversy since the last government left office, and has sparked much debate in the House of Assembly about the new Government’s lack of interest and commitment to seeing it fully built and operational. In the current budget, which was passed in March 2017, no money was allocated for completing the park which still needs to be properly fenced and maintained. When the question was raised last March by Missick, she was informed that no money would be budgeted for that as the parks are not a priority of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM). The parks, another one of which is located in South Caicos, were

one of the former deputy premier’s promises to her constituency after being elected in 2012. The Leeward park alone had cost the Government $400,000. The park in Leeward spans some 1.5 to 1.8 acres, and was initially set to consist of a picnic area, gazebo, basketball court and multipurpose courts, a baby and toddler play area, an adult area, kids area. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Planning is responsible for the upkeep of the facilities. Last year, the subject minister Goldray Ewing was adamant that the parks were completed, as they only needed fencing. At that time, he stated that his ministry is not responsible for anything else to do with the parks - facilities that were built with tax payers dollars for the enjoyment of residents of the two communities. Since assuming office, the Government has been shifting responsibility for the park’s maintenance with the two appropriate ministries stating that neither one of them is responsible for the project, one which was constructed under the PNP Government. “That park is good example of what not to do. Anything we do will be covered; at least the equipment would be under some form of shelter, it won’t be like that,” Ewing stated at the time. “It is a waste of money; a lot of money went into that park. So, we just threw a lot of money down the drain. “It was a political stunt.”

Sandals breaks records in sustainability BEACHES Turks and Caicos is one of six Sandals resorts that hold a Platinum Certification from EarthCheck. The world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism gives the awards to resorts across the world for their environmental sustainability. Sandals also has six resorts with the Master Certification, three with Gold Certification and three holding the Silver Certification. Achieving the EarthCheck Master Certification is confirmation that the resorts have consistently measured and benchmarked their annual environmental performance against their peers over a 15 year period and have had their systems and data independently examined and verified by a third party auditor. To achieve Platinum Certification, properties need to have maintained this standard for 10 years. Stewart Moore, EarthCheck’s founder and chief executive officer,

lauded Sandals’ achievements, hailing the company as a standout sustainability hero in the Caribbean and Americas. “Sandals has confirmed its position as a true worldwide leader in responsible tourism, and a genuine source of inspiration to the international tourism community,” he said. “The group and its passionate staff play an integral role in motivating their guests and community to make a difference, from embedding programmes into local schools to celebrating novel ways to reuse trash.” Sandals Resorts International has long held environmental sustainability as part of its core vision and mission and has implemented numerous environmental programmes to better streamline and manage its operations. These include energy conservation initiatives and waste and water management programmes, all of which fall under the remit of the company’s Environment, Health and Safety

Division. Each resort has a dedicated environment, health and safety manager charged with implementing and managing sustainable programmes and ensuring that the resort adheres to internationally-accepted operating standards. Adam Stewart, deputy chairman and chief executive officer at Sandals Resorts International, said: “We take environmental preservation very seriously at Sandals and these certifications are testament to this. “To be consistently audited and examined by an independent body and continuously maintain and exceed standards is no easy feat but we are driven by our commitment to the environment and we leave no stone unturned when it comes to implementing and maintaining sustainable programmes and practices.” The company also invests millions in training programmes to ensure all team members are aware of the importance of environmental preservation.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

A TWO percent positive economic growth is expected for the Caribbean region in 2018, with the Turks and Caicos Islands predicted to experience very strong economic progress this year. What are your thoughts?

Just a dream

Just think how good the future might look if the Government were a help rather than a hindrance; if it were doing anything to rebuild this territory, instead of leaving it all to the private sector; if it were providing any kind of leadership, rather than muddling around like a flock of headless chickens? Oh well, no harm in dreaming!

A warmer welcome

With the US economy on the rebound and fewer taxes being withdrawn from paycheques, more spending by potential visitors should bring them to the TCI’s resorts. If the family islands are opened to new immigration policies perhaps retired US and possibly Canadian citizens would build homes in South, North and Middle Caicos instead of Florida or the Bahamas.

Promotional gas

Very encouraging talk. But you have ask yourself why are there something in the region of 200 hotel developments actually going up in the region and yet nothing here.

Just talk and promotional gas as usual. What puts developers off the Islands? Have we become a quagmire of bureaucracy and regulation and a reputation for instability? The question needs asking. Maybe the powers that be do not really want anything to happen. If we get another Irma that whole forecast goes down the drain. Get real.

Will it buy food?

What does strong economic progress mean when the trickledown effect is non-existent in this territory? The average man on the street could not care less about the CDB’s projections, if he can’t afford to put food on the table for his family.

Gov’t spent more than $1m on post hurricane clean-up – Premier calls on residents to tidy their communities BY DELANA ISLES THE GOVERNMENT has already expended $1 million on cleanup efforts for the entire territory since the passage of the two major hurricanes last September. This was revealed by Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson during a brief speech in the House of Assembly earlier this month. The premier was addressing one of the pressing and topical issues for communities in several of the sister islands, whereby dumping and post hurricane recovery is still a problem. Over the last few weeks, some communities such as the Bight, Bambarra and Blue Hills, have been brought together through their elected representatives to conduct non-governmental, private sector sponsored clean up exercises. The premier expressed her gratitude for their efforts: “Thanks to those that are organising and being a part of the clean-up in the Bight and to also thank those members of the community who came together on Bambarra in Middle Caicos to clean up their island, and to encourage other groups to do likewise.” She added: “We know that people

look to the Government for a lot, and we have spent well over a million dollars in clean-ups throughout the Islands. “I will put those figures out again because it was leading the House of Assembly at the last meeting - what we have spent from the contingency fund - but it is important for every island to know how much was spent on each of the islands in terms of major contracts, minor contracts, street cleaning contracts, and cleaning up post storms. “I would encourage persons to do committee and community cleanups, that is certainly a good gesture not for the Government but for the Turks and Caicos. We are beautiful by nature.” She also said that the Government will soon be revealing exactly how much money it has expended in clean-ups around the territory, island by island. She said that she hopes that this will discourage those who are engaging in dumping their refuse on the roads even after the clean-up works are carried out, to continue with their actions. “Once I put this information out, I will make that call again.

Remember the minister of health in the last meeting spoke to it and it is continuing, and we want to encourage people to do right by this country. “We can’t continue to expend public funds cleaning up and cleaning up, so we want to encourage you to do the right thing.” Responding to the premier’s statement that the Government cannot continue to spend money on public cleaning, elected member for Grand Turk North, George Lightbourne said that the premier ought to apologise for that statement. “It is the most reckless statement that I’ve heard in recent times; because essentially what she is saying is that the taxpayers who are funding government efforts - cleanup included - she is saying to them that we are not going to pay any emphasis on cleaning up those areas that are in need of clean-up. “It seems like from looking at this supplementary, the honourable premier is saying that she cannot spend money on a lot of things, crime included,” the member stated. The reference made by the premier in relation to dumping on the roadways, was an accusation made by the Minister of Health, Edwin Astwood against Lightbourne. Astwood said at the time that opposition members are encouraging residents of Grand Turk to dump their refuse on the streets so as to frustrate

Residents are being encouraged to help clean up their communities

the Government’s clean-up efforts. He said: “We did a general cleanup right after the hurricane, and Grand Turk was clean, persons put back out garbage in the roads. “You’re going to blame the Government for that? We went ahead and cleaned it again, persons put back out garbage. Carnival did cleaning, persons put back out garbage. “People are being encouraged to dump on the side of the roads and I know that for fact. “People are being encouraged

by the opposition to dump their garbage. I have been told that, people are being encouraged to dirty up this country. Environmental powers, people from your constituency [George Lightbourne’s] have said that they are being encouraged to dump,” Astwood accused. At the last meeting of the House on February 5, Astwood repeated his claim, publicly naming Lightbourne as the opposition member who is encouraging his constituents in their litter bug behaviour.

TCIFA members lend a helping hand in communities across the TCI

Football association establishes hurricane relief fund BY OLIVIA ROSE THE TURKS and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) has established a hurricane relief fund to assist families who are still struggling to put their lives back together after storms ravaged the territory. The fund is particularly geared

towards assisting children and their families from the TCIFA’s many Youth Development Football Programmes. President of the TCIFA Sonia Bien-Aime, in a press release this week, stressed that times of need and desperation are instances that truly test the resolve and heart of many

communities. “The hurricanes of last year truly did that to the Turks and Caicos Islands football community,” she said. Bien-Aime explained that the association’s intention in setting up the relief fund is to address head on some of the challenges families are still battling after the storm.

“We understand the impact of natural disasters on our local community and we are willing and ready to show our support for our people by helping those in need. “The TCIFA truly appreciates the positive and unyielding relationship it has with its players, supporters and stakeholders, and we have

no hesitation in giving back and assisting those in need. It is the humane thing to do. “Together, we can all make a difference to those persons who need help to restore their lives.” Visit www.football.tc for more details on the association and its initiatives.

Hospitality workers eager for resolution of service charge issue BY OLIVIA ROSE HOSPITALITY workers across the Turks and Caicos Islands are ‘waiting with bated breath’ for the Government to resolve the 100 percent service charge issue. During a recent vox pop conducted by the Weekly News, several workers within the tourism industry said they are anxiously awaiting the Government’s decision. Some, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal from their employers, called on the Government to quickly deliver on its promise. A female waitress employed at popular Five Cays restaurant, said it is high time that the Government and the opposition stop the tit for tat and deal with the real issues. The woman, who is a single parent, pointed out that the cost of living in the TCI continues to rise but the minimum wage remains the same, which makes it difficult for parents to provide for their families. The woman noted that while the 100 percent service charge may seem like a drop in the bucket for many, for her and other single parents it would put food on their tables. The incumbent Government on its campaign trail promised to amend the service charge legislation so that 100 percent of the monies paid as service charge is given to the employees. A change in the law would give hotel workers all of the service charge collected, and not just the

Hospitality workers in the Turks and Caicos Islands

40 percent they are reportedly now receiving. This means that thousands of industry workers will have larger take-home pay. Speaking on the issue at the Government’s end of year press conference in December, Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson apologised to the beneficiaries who were looking forward to the resolution of the bread and butter issue last year. “I want to say to those who are looking forward to the resolution of this issue, the delay does not mean deny and we remain committed to this issue.

“Critical works are ongoing and we will update as we are updated on the progress. “The survey is now being done by the Department of Statistics and following the survey there will be an analysis of the information. “I have already begun to hold meetings on this issue and I’m hearing from all stakeholders.” The online survey is currently ongoing and is being conducted by a review committee to obtain data on the collection and payment of service charges within hotels and restaurants operating in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The survey provides a channel

for stakeholders in the industry to respond anonymously, based on their knowledge of their respective organisations and the service charge practices within the industry on a whole. The data collected will provide information on the percentage of service charge collected; the percentages distributed between entity and staff; how it is currently distributed between the employer and employees, and how respondents feel it should be distributed; how entities utilise their apportionments; and how knowledgeable the various stakeholders are of the Service Charge (Hotels and Restaurants)

Ordinance and its application. Shonya Been, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, told the Weekly News that the data collection process is still ongoing. “The data collection sample has been tested and the data has been collected,” she said, “the statistical department would’ve facilitated that under the statistical ordinance. “What we have to do now is collate the data and make inferences and findings that we’ve collected.” She informed the Weekly News that the initial deadline was pushed back, since the data collection team is under resourced. There is a legal requirement for any entity levying a service charge to hold a register of such payments collected during the month and to distribute the amounts collected in equal shares or using a formula approved by the Minister for Finance to all employees. The legislation currently obtains that not less than 60 percent of the total service charges paid by customers or guests is payable to the employees of collecting establishment. ‘Service charge’ is defined in the ordinance as “any amount of money charged over and above the price of accommodation in a hotel, or the selling price of a meal or intoxicating liquor or beverage purchased by a customer, for service to a guest or customer in a hotel or restaurant, but does not include any tax required to be paid under any ordinance.”

High school drugs campaign concludes BY OLIVIA ROSE A PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL programme at Long Bay High School aimed at teaching select students about the harmful effects of substance abuse, recently came to an end. The pilot programme, which was launched on December 7, saw 13 boys being mentored by guidance counsellors. The students had the opportunity to express their feelings on a range of issues affecting them, while focusing on resistance skills and the social challenges that contribute to drug use. The facilitators of the programme were guidance counsellor Diane Paul, who is a certified substance abuse counsellor, and Youth Director Nixon Dickenson. A simple completion ceremony was held on the school’s campus on February 8 and was attended by

UK territory ministers talk illegal poaching and impact of plastics BY OLIVIA ROSE ILLEGAL poaching and the impact of plastics on the environment were discussed at length during a UK overseas territories conference in the Isle of Man last week. Environment ministers from across the globe gathered in Douglas on February 6 and 7 for the third Council of Environment Ministers of UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. The sustainability of land and marine environments, climate change, the impact of natural disasters on ecosystem services and environmental resilience formed part of the discussions. The TCI was represented at that meeting by Minister of Tourism, Environment, Heritage, Maritime and Gaming, Ralph Higgs, who was accompanied by his Deputy Permanent Secretary, Michelle Fulford Gardiner.

The high-level environment meeting provided an opportunity for ministers to engage their counterparts on similar issues facing their territories while allowing them to adopt best practices and forge stronger partnerships to ensure the sustainability of their environments. According to a press release, Higgs and Fulford Gardiner took advantage of the opportunity to arrange meetings with maritime and ship registry sector officials, and enjoyed a site visit to a state-of-theart energy form waste plant. Higgs said: “The meeting was a worthy assembly of like-minded decision makers with diversity in social, economic and political structures, but similar challenges.” He pointed out that the meeting was timely since the TCI and other territories have emerged from a vicious hurricane season with pertinent lessons. “The Turks and Caicos Islands in

Love triangle lands man in jail APPEARING in the Grand Turk Magistrate’s Court earlier this week was Anthony Andy Clarke, charged with the assault of two women. Clarke, who was just recently released from Her Majesty’s Prison on another offence, was rearrested by police officers in Grand Turk last week and charged with assault occasioning actual

bodily harm. Reports are that two women, one of whom bore a child for the defendant and the other whom he is said to be a relationship with, had a confrontation that led to the defendant intervening and subsequently assaulting both of them. Clarke was granted bail and is to return to the Grand Turk court in March.

the wake of two catastrophic storms realised some destruction of our natural environment, but saw firsthand how the resilience of healthy ecosystems such as the coral reef provides a service that went a long way in protecting our fragile islands.” Higgs acknowledged that the environment is at the foundation of the territory’s tourism industry and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to providing sustainable financing for conservation and climate change initiatives. He also extended appreciation to the people and government of Gibraltar for the assistance rendered to the TCI after hurricane Irma. Geoffrey Boot, the Isle of Man’s Minister of Environment, Food and Agriculture, said: “Although very different in character, our islands all boast beautiful environments that are important to our economies and our way of life and we wish to retain and maximise the benefit. “The meeting was an excellent opportunity to share good practice and discuss common concerns and we learned a lot that we can put into effect in our islands. “It was especially useful to discuss with the UK’s Environment Minister, Dr Thérèse Coffey, how our jurisdictions can work together and more closely with the UK, to ensure a coherent approach on matters such a plastic waste, ocean acidification and warming.” Professor John Cortés, Gibraltar’s Minister for Education, Heritage, and Environment, pointed out that while the territories are diverse, working together in mutual support for the protection and improvement

of the environment and quality of life is essential. He said: “We are looking at a sustainable future within our territories but have also recognised our responsibility beyond our shores. “Most of us are islands and so we are also championing the future of our oceans by joining the stand against plastic pollution and working towards improvement of the biological status of the many kilometres of sea that are

Fingerprint evidence illicits guilty plea A CONFESSED burglar will soon be sentenced for his crimes by a Grand Turk magistrate after changing his not guilty plea. Marlon Glinton, whose trial was scheduled to start on Monday in the Grand Turk Supreme Court, has requested, through his lawyer Lara Maroof-Missick, to have his case sent back to magistrate’s court for adjudication. This week, Maroof-Missick

made the application to the judge after evidence showed that her client’s fingerprints were found on a cash register in the building he burgled. Glinton pleaded guilty to the offence of burglary and his matter was adjourned until March for sentencing, pending a pre-sentencing report. He is currently out on bail. (Delana Isles)

Accountability and transparency are essential principles LETTER OF THE WEEK

Dear Editor, The TCI Government exists to serve the people. Information on how TCI officials conduct the public business and spend taxpayers’ money must be readily available and easily understood. A transparent government is an essential element of a free and democratic society. In a democracy, the principle of accountability holds that government officials, whether elected or appointed by those who have been elected, are responsible to the citizenry for their decisions and actions, and the decisions and actions of those in government are open to public scrutiny and the public has a right to access government information. Transparency is operating in such a way that it is easy for the citizens of the TCI to see what actions are performed by the Government on their behalf. This transparency allows good and just governance. Openness, accountability, and honesty define government transparency, otherwise, there is abuse of power and a very real potential for corruption. Democracies work best when the people have all the information that

the security of the nation permits. No elected person should be able to pull the curtains of secrecy around decisions which can be revealed without injury to the public interest, otherwise, there is abuse of power and a very real potential for corruption. In a free society, transparency is the government’s obligation to share information with citizens. It is at the heart of how citizens hold their public officials accountable. The people must also have the right to know about government proceedings and have the right to gain access to government information, otherwise again, there is abuse of power and a very real potential for corruption. Accountability and transparency tends to help create better policies and prevent the abuse of power. The more the TCI public knows about the Government’s actions, the better judgements it can make about public policy. Governments that are truly accountable can more effectively prevent corruption, which involves the use of positions of power or privilege for personal, corporate, or group enrichment. Without accountability and

transparency, democracy is impossible. In their absence, voters are necessarily ignorant in their electoral choices; elections and the notion of the will of the people lose their meaning and the government has the potential to become arbitrary, self-serving and engage in the abuse of power and corruption as we have seen in the TCI. In democracies, standards of accountability and transparency affect not only the government, but also businesses, developers and investors that operate under public laws. When one speaks of corruption in this context, it usually involves a cash payment of money in an envelope to an elected official, or special bank loans, or promises to direct economic activities to elected or appointed officials to influence government regulations regarding beach access by the public, building height restrictions, dredging in sensitive areas, government regulation of private sector employees, “sweetheart” development agreements, “sweetheart” development orders or other business transactions benefiting private individuals who have unduly and illegally influenced

The pivotal role of church and its leadership Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Turks and Caicos Christian Council to address a matter that is often overlooked: the role and contributions of the church in our society. On January 20, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the third annual National Honours and Awards Ceremony. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the committee and all of the honourees recognised for their service and contribution to our country. As I sat and observed men and women being honoured for their service in various industries, there was a noticeable absence - the church was missing. Let me make it clear that all of the honourees were well deserving

of their various awards. However, I was disturbed that the church nor its leadership was recognised in any of the categories. The church and its leaders play a pivotal role in our country and the men and women that serve as leaders, pastors, bishops, priests, apostles, make tremendous sacrifices and in many cases with little or no recognition for the work they do in their various communities. I know some may say that they will receive their reward in heaven; but the Bible states in 1 Timothy 5:17 “Give double honour to spiritual leaders who handle their duties well. This is especially true if they work hard at teaching the word of God.” I reflect on the service of great persons such as Cannon Lamuel Been, Reverend

Derek Hamilton, Dr Goldstone Williams, Bishop Austraham Hamilton, the Late Reverend Peter Hall, the late Bishop Arthur Gardiner, Reverend Anita Talbot, Reverend Julia Williams, Apostle Ruth Ariza and countless others. Their contributions and years of services is indeed worthy of national recognition. As we submit nominations for 2018, let us not overlook the role that the church and it leadership has played in the advancement of these Islands. Thank you and may God continue to bless the Turks and Caicos Islands. Yours in Christ, Bishop Bryant R Cox, President, Turks and Caicos Christian Council

and corrupted elected officials or civil servants. Sound familiar? Absent the instruments of accountability and transparency, the TCI Government is likely to continue succumbing to this corruption and a general abuse of power. That is the common response throughout history when no controls have been placed on governmental actions and leaders have sought merely to retain their positions of power and privilege by selling-out to the highest bidder.

Accountability and transparency are two of the most essential principles sought by international investors and developers. The TCI will continue to languish and deteriorate in development and investment circles, as it has for the past ten years, without the prompt and sincere implementation of those two essential principals which have been missing in the TCI. Flow and Digicel need to fix it Dear Editor, It is amazing that Flow is very proud of their accomplishments since the passing of the hurricane. However, we have communities such as Cooper Jack Bay Road and Blue Hills that have been existing without internet and cable TV for the last six months. This is quite appalling and is not reflective of good customer service. To complicate matters even further, there has not been any effective communication or communication updates to advise when the issues will be resolved. After countless efforts via various

methods, no one seems to know the answer. Since the hurricane, only two Flow vehicles have been observed in these communities. The members of these communities have run out of patience and simply do not deserve this kind of unfair treatment. The effect of the lack of internet is far-reaching and affects all members of the families in these communities. We are hoping that this will be the best medium to get a final resolution. Please fix this! Anonymous

Titus nailed it Dear Editor, Thank you for allowing me to express my opinion in your paper. As a lifelong resident and native of Salt Cay, I was heartened to see a commentary last week by Titus de Boer, in which he described the situation on Salt Cay, just after last year’s hurricanes and now. I think that Titus is one of the few people who can write with any authority about that critical period on Salt Cay because, unlike a lot of other people, he was actually here on Salt Cay during both hurricanes. I was especially happy to read his commentary about the immediate aftermath of those storms, when he wrote: “One had to have been on Salt

Cay during those first three weeks, following the hurricanes, to fully appreciate the atmosphere, which was in one word - desperate.” He is spot on with his observation and I totally agree, that you had to have been in Salt Cay to completely understand how bad things really were. Things were really desperate! Thank you Titus for keeping Salt Cay in the news and thank you Mr Editor for publishing the contributions of one of the best commentators in this country. (Salt Cay is lucky to have him). Sincerely, Captain Allan ‘Shyne’ Dickinson, Salt Cay

Wanton garbage disposal ‘will not be tolerated’ BY OLIVIA ROSE THE GOVERNMENT plans to fully enforce public environmental laws to curb the dumping of garbage on roadsides. That was stressed by Minister of Health Agriculture and Human Services Edwin Astwood in an interview with the Weekly News last week. He spoke in detail about the issue at the Government’s end of year press conference at the Hilly Ewing Building in Providenciales in December. “In 2018 we will be enforcing the public environmental health laws to a tee,” he said. “Yes they will be updated and upgraded to move some old things that speaks of prickly pear trees etc, but there’s far too much illegal dumping taking place in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“We know after the passage of the hurricanes persons had to get rid of debris, but now we have done cleanups, persons are still putting debris back out on the road. “We cleaned up again and persons are still dumping. “In Grand Turk they conducted clean-ups and as the persons were cleaning up, the next day persons dumped garbage again.” Astwood said that his ministry will work in conjunction with the Ministry of Finance to roll out a countrywide clean-up in the first three months of 2018. “We’re going to get this country clean,” he stressed. While the public has been repeatedly urged to desist from dumping garbage on vacant houselots and along the sides of the roads, the improper disposal of garbage in many communities is still an issue. This issue was amplified after

Illegal dumping in Kew Town

the passing of hurricanes Irma and Maria; many residents are still finding it difficult to clear debris months after. Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson said money will be spent from the Carnival Infrastructure Fund to assist with clean-up efforts on Grand Turk. “The Premier’s Office through the director will address the outstanding

task for South Caicos, Salt Cay, North and Middle Caicos through existing funding lines for clean-ups.” The Turks and Caicos Islands was awarded $100 million in financial support from the Caribbean Development Bank to develop a country strategy for the period 2015 to 2018. This strategy focuses on helping the Government address the social,

economic and environmental challenges. It will also see funds being used to improve environmental sustainability by addressing issues such as inadequate solid waste management and climate change impacts. About 40,000 tonnes of waste per year is processed in the TCI through the waste management system.

Olympic swimmer visits primary school IT WASN’T a typical Friday at Iris Stubbs Primary School as the students received a surprise visit from one of the Caribbean’s elite swimmers. Shaune Fraser, who represented the Cayman Islands three times in the Summer Olympics, stopped by the school to screen The Black Line, a documentary that he helped produce. He also drew awareness to the local non-profit Swim and Surf TCI which, along with the Ed Gartland Youth Centre, provides affordable swimming programmes in Providenciales. Fraser spoke with the fifth and sixth grade students about the challenges that he faced while learning how to swim in the Cayman Islands without proper facilities. The children also watched his documentary which features interviews with several elite

swimmers from the Caribbean who share their experiences and the prejudices they faced. From the West African pearl divers of the 1700s, through to the 1800s US Jim Crow era stratification of US swimming, to the indigenous athletic traditions of Caribbean swimmers, The Black Line explores and undoes the incorrect stereotypes facing swimmers of colour. It provides an in-depth look at how Jim Crow era laws in the United States created a generational divide that resulted in older generations passing down an unjust fear to their children as a result of their own inability to swim. The film also confronts false stereotypes head-on with facts and testimonials from some of the swimmers. According to a press release: “The Black Line explores the false

LET’S TALK BEAUTY

The look of love Wendy Fitzwilliam ‘the face’ and host of Caribbean’s Next Top Model

Next Top Model expands to Bahamas LOVE is in the air and so is the buzz around season four of Caribbean’s Next Top Model (CNTM) as it expands to include young hopefuls from the Bahamas. The model search show kicked off on Valentine’s Day (Wednesday, February 14) at 9pm on Flow 1. Garry Sinclair, Caribbean president of C&W Communications, said: “We’re delighted to be onboard once again for the fourth season of CNTM which continues to draw bigger and bigger audiences as a platform for young Caribbean women to develop careers in the fashion industry.” Viewers are in for another captivating series which was filmed against the vibrant backdrop that is Jamaica, home of season three winner Shamique Simms. Miss Universe ‘98, Wendy Fitzwilliams who is also executive producer, host and chief judge along with fashion designer Socrates McKinney and Australian photographer Pedro Virgil, all return to the screen this season. The expansion to the Bahamas, the stunning aspiring models and the eclectic charm of the islands make for another scintillating series. The off-screen excitement continues via social media as Caribbean viewers can follow their

favourite girls on the show using the #caribentm for exclusive behindthe-scenes footage and candid interviews. Flow customers will have the added benefit of watching on-the-go from their tablet or mobile device with the MyFlow app as well as catch up on the past three seasons of CNTM with Flow’s ‘Video on Demand’. Sinclair said: “Flow is committed to building Caribbean content for Caribbean audiences. “In the end, regardless of who wins, the Caribbean benefits from productions that showcase the diversity, energy, talent and creativity of our people for the world to see.” Executive producer Fitzwilliams lauded the production team and the aspiring models as well as she praised Flow for their commitment to the project. “It has been a tremendous challenge to take a production of this magnitude from a mere concept to amazingly a fourth season.” Caribbean’s Next Top Model is produced by Starfish Media Ltd, based on the ‘Next Top Model’ format licensed by CBS Studios International. Executive producers are Dionyse Fitzwilliam, Wendy Fitzwilliam and Kiran Maharaj.

SINCE as far as we can remember, love has been expressed in various ways. These acts of affection are amplified during the anticipation of Valentine’s Day! For some of us, it is just another day. While for others, this is a special time to express your devotion and undying love for a significant other. Regardless of the side you’re on, neither approach to Valentine’s Day is wrong. While most of us would agree that one shouldn’t need a holiday to prompt him or her to show love and appreciation, let’s be real for a minute. Every individual is dealing with different life challenges. It is no excuse, because naturally we are faulted for taking our lovedones for granted. I think that the thought put into a Valentine’s gesture is what means the most. I want to take an unconventional approach to define what we should do to achieve ‘The look of love’. In no particular order, here are my top four ways to display the look of love for Valentine’s Day 2018. BE KIND (AND SMILE) Friends, nothing accentuates your natural beauty like a genuine smile. This year, decide within yourself to let go of the distractions that interfere with your happiness. The act of smiling seems simple but may turn it to be a heavy task for some persons.

Ever wonder why some people still look young? Smiling is a naturally built in face lift! It emphasises hot cheekbones and lips. Therefore, keeping a very youthful look! BE GENTLE You can be more gentle with your skin on a day to day basis. Using a gentle or natural facial cleanser is a good way to start. You can follow up with your favourite natural oil for a nice smooth finish. After you do this in the morning, it sets the tone for your day! You’ve handled yourself with care, so now you can handle your interactions with the same tenderness. BE ATTENTIVE For the most part, we all have an idea of the small things that make us happy. Whether it’s grabbing some ice cream, shopping, travel, reading or movies, there is something out there that we enjoy. Once in a while, you should be more attentive to someone else’s needs/wants. I am not talking about parental duties. Whether you are single, engaged or married, there is someone in your life that you can be attentive to other than yourself. I am NOT saying to dismiss your personal needs or allow yourself to be taken advantage of. Whether we are aware or not, we are constantly motivated by our own personal desires on a daily basis. Sometimes showing someone that you are thinking of them could be the greatest motivation.

By Arlene A De Veaux Arlene Deveaux is a professional makeup artist and beautician at Kiss N Makeup Beauty Parlour in Providenciales.

BE BEAUTIFUL Of course, this wouldn’t be a beauty column without the discussion of our outer appearance. As you can tell, I like to balance the internal beauty with external beauty. With that said, we must ensure that we are putting our best foot forward as best we can. Based some of our professions, this can present itself as a challenge. I don’t expect a mechanic or construction worker to be clean all day BUT your hair and facial hair can be groomed. This actually makes a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. I also don’t expect ladies with beginner makeup skills to be dolled up every day however, start with the steps you know and like. By doing this, you help to build confidence in yourself. With all that said, men and women should have a personal budget for grooming upkeep. Whether you go weekly, biweekly or monthly, we should all take pride in our hygiene outside of the standard shower and brushing your teeth. Men, you should be getting weekly hair and beard trims. Women, where you budget allows, biweekly or monthly treatments. By doing this for yourself, you set your personal standard that will build up esteem and pride in yourself. Therefore, producing the ultimate look of love!

Firms on Caribbean island chain own 23,000 UK properties A QUARTER of property in England and Wales owned by overseas firms is held by entities registered in the British Virgin Islands, BBC analysis has found. The Caribbean archipelago is the official home of companies that own 23,000 properties - more than any other country. They are owned by 11,700 firms registered in the overseas territory. The finding emerged from BBC analysis conducted of Land Registry data on overseas property ownership. The research found there are around 97,000 properties in England and Wales held by overseas firms, as of January 2018. It adds to concerns that companies registered in British-controlled tax havens have been used to avoid tax. Close behind the British Virgin Islands (BVI), which has a population of just 30,600, are Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Of the properties owned by overseas companies in England and Wales, two thirds are registered to firms in the British Virgin Islands, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Many foreign UK property owners are also officially headquartered in Hong Kong, Panama and Ireland. The analysis provides a new picture of ownership of property by overseas companies in England and Wales following a decision last November to make the database public and free to access. The government of the British Virgin Islands said it was incorrect to label the country as a tax haven. It said that there were many practical reasons why UK properties might be owned by companies incorporated in the BVI. It argued that BVI companies can

bring together multiple investors and owners, which is useful for big commercial property deals that have investors in more than one country. The BVI also said that it shared “necessary information” including ownership details with relevant authorities. Among those entries in the database that disclosed a price, the most expensive was the former headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard, at 8-10 Broadway. The site was purchased by the Abu Dhabi Financial Group in 2014 for £370m from the Mayor of London’s office. But it is officially owned by a Jersey-based company called BL Development. The 1967 multi-storey block has now been demolished to make way for “a luxury collection of one to five bedroom apartments across six architecturally striking towers”. These range in price from £1.5m to more than £10m.

The leasehold of Admiralty Arch, the former government building off Trafalgar Square that straddles one end of The Mall, was sold to hotel developer Prime Investments for £141m. It is registered to a Guernsey-based entity, Admiralty Arch Hotels Ltd. While the most expensive buildings are commercial properties such as hotels and office blocks in prime central London locations, many are residential properties rather than business premises. Take Green Street, London W1 - a residential street of highly-desirable four-storey redbrick Victorian terraces, fronted by smart wroughtiron railings. Walking east to west you’ll pass one terraced residence owned, according to the latest records, from the Turks and Caicos Islands by a company called Alliance Property Ltd. Next door is another residence owned by Lily Holding & Finance Inc, registered in BVI.

More raids by Trinidad security forces in Carnival terror plot Another Trinidad resident was detained by security forces for questioning early Monday morning in connection with a reported terrorist plot to disrupt Carnival. Several premises — including an Islamic school — were searched. The detained man allegedly had books on Islamic, commerce and one about “Justification for Jihad”, the Trinidad Guardian reported. Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams said last weekend that eight people had previously been detained relating to the terror plot. On Monday, police sources said investigations were still continuing

and work was being done concerning information on the plot to disrupt Carnival. They said more information will be forthcoming soon. National Security Minister Edmund Dillon told the Guardian he endorsed Williams’ statements that the recent exercise wasn’t meant to target or attack the Muslim community or any others. “We’re investigating criminal activity based on intelligence and if that intelligence points in a certain direction we have to investigate it. Trinidad and Tobago is a multiethnic and multi-religious country. We respect all and one,” he said. (Caribbeannewsnow)

Homes evacuated as mud volcano erupts in Trinidad A FEW homes in a community in the south of Trinidad have been evacuated following at least two eruptions at the Devil’s Wood Yard mud volcano on Tuesday morning. The rumbling began around 4 a.m. at the volcano in Hindustan Village near New Grant, Princes Town, and another eruption was reported after 9 a.m. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) said it is closely monitoring the situation, along with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Geological Society, the UWI Seismic Research Centre and the Princes Town Regional Corporation.

The mud volcano first erupted in 1852 and then again 20 years ago.

Police and fire officials also converged at the site. “The EMA is mobilising a team to visit the site to conduct air testing in the area. TTFS [Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service and Police Service are on site to maintain public safety and security,” the OPDM had said in a statement. Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat reported that there was still some seismic activity at the site and the size of the mud flow was growing, and he advised citizens against visiting the volcano. He said three homes close to the site have been evacuated and cracks were visible on the road and on lands in the area. The mud volcano first erupted in 1852 and then again 20 years ago. Overnight fire devastates Haiti’s iconic iron market HAITI’S iconic Iron Market, a tourist attraction in downtown Portau-Prince, was ravaged Tuesday by an early-morning fire that spread through the building while many of the vendors, whose merchandise and cash were inside, were participating in the National Carnival celebration. News of the fire travelled quickly

UK reluctant to MP attacked for condoning intervene as Bermuda abuse of women repeals gay marriage THE U.K. government is facing a cross-party backlash for its failure to intervene as Bermuda became the first territory in the world to “repeal“ gay marriage rights. The governor of Bermuda, John Rankin, last week ratified a decision in the country’s legislature to replace gay marriage with “domestic partnerships.” The decision attracted international condemnation and calls for the U.K. to step in and make same-sex marriage legal across its territories. The furor over the Bermuda decision is also bringing fresh international attention to the rest of the U.K.’s Caribbean territories – where there are even fewer rights for same-sex couples. Bermuda is the only British territory in the region to have any formal framework for same-sex unions. The Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Turks and Caicos and Montserrat do not recognise the rights of gay couples, though many legal experts believe the laws in those countries would not withstand a court challenge. Cayman Islands-based researcher and campaigner Leonardo Raznovich said the “appalling” decision in Bermuda set a terrible precedent that would do little to advance the cause of same-sex couples in Britain’s territories. He called on the U.K. government to take on the issue and bring an “order in council” to mandate equal marriage rights as it did in 2001 to force its territories to legalise homosexuality. James Austin-Smith, chairman of the Human Rights Commission in the Cayman Islands, told the Cayman Compass last month that Cayman’s position on same-sex unions was out of step with the European Convention on Human Rights and he believes any couple that brought a legal challenge would “definitely win.” Bermuda was forced to recognise the rights of gay couples to marry after a Supreme Court decision in May 2017. But politicians in the territory tweaked legislation to essentially ban gay marriage once again and introduce a new “Domestic Partnerships Bill,” which offers same-sex couples the right to civil unions, with many of the same rights. Bermuda’s Governor Rankin signed the bill into law last week, prompting a debate in the U.K. Parliament. Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “seriously disappointed” about the decision but indicated the U.K. would continue to respect the

rights of its territories to make their own decisions. “That bill has been democratically passed by the Parliament of Bermuda, and our relationship with the overseas territories is based on partnership and respect for their right to democratic self-government,” she said in a statement to the U.K. media. MPs on all sides criticised the decision and called it a backward step. Labour MP Chris Bryant said the law reversal will make Britain a “laughing stock in the international human rights field.” Mr. Raznovich, a former law professor at the Truman Bodden Law School in Grand Cayman, successfully forced a change in policy in 2016 to allow same-sex couples, married in other jurisdictions, to have their partnerships recognized for immigration purposes. He said the Bermuda decision, which walks back an order of the Supreme Court, showed a disregard for the rule of law and could be open to legal challenge. The U.K.’s endorsement of a law that removes established legal rights, verified by a court decision, is disturbing and unprecedented, he added. Mr. Raznovich acknowledged that if Cayman’s legislature were to introduce equivalent legislation to Bermuda’s domestic partnerships bill, it would be welcomed by the gay community. “It would be a great step forward,” he said, “but why would they do that? “After this decision by the U.K., they have taken away the urgency for the Legislative Assembly to act. Now they know they can do nothing and wait for a legal challenge. If it goes against them, they can then take the Bermuda bill and give a secondclass ticket [to gay couples] ….” The lawyer, now part of a research team investigating the 11 countries in the Caribbean that still outlaw homosexuality, said it was time for the U.K. to step in with an “order in council” to end the debate once and for all. Outside of the Caribbean, all U.K. territories – even the remote South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which has a population of 30 – allow same-sex marriage. The Dutch and U.S. dependent territories in the Caribbean have all legalized same-sex marriage. Mr. Raznovich added, “All political parties [in the U.K.] have said they can’t believe what has happened in Bermuda. “I would not be surprised if the U.K. now steps in and issues a samesex marriage act for the territories. It would be a commonsense step.” (Cayman Compass)

A WOMEN’S rights activist in the Bahamas on Tuesday called for the resignation of MICAL MP Miriam Emmanuel after she insinuated there is nothing wrong if a woman is “manhandled” by her husband who might also decide to “slap,” “shake,” or “punch” her in the mouth as punishment for challenging him. Donna Nicolls, deputy director of the Bahamas Crisis Centre called the situation “crazy,” adding the comments Mrs Emmanuel made in Parliament yesterday reverted this country to the “Dark Ages”. However, as the comments drew fierce condemnation in many circles and on social media, Mrs Emmanuel issued a statement saying she regretted making the “unfortunate analogy,” claiming the comments were taken out of context and misunderstood. Hours before she realised the comments were unfortunate, Mrs Emmanuel suggested in the House of Assembly she had no issues with physical abuse, if it was justified by the actions of a woman who wants to “come up” in her husband’s face and behave like she is a man. The comments seemed not to trouble seated MPs – some could be heard snickering as she made her remarks. “I am the seventh of 10 daughters

and I recall as we began to mature and take on marriage and family, one of the things that my father often say to us as his daughters, if you want to remain a lady, if you want to remain treated as a lady, then you must behave like a lady,” the first time MP said yesterday. “And he said if there ever comes a time when you have to come back to this house and say to me as your father that your husband shook you, or give you a slap or punch you in your mouth, I will analyse while I listen to you. I will analyse

the consequences that would have caused your husband to probably shake you, slap you or punch you in your mouth.” Mrs Emmanuel continued: “And I said simply what my father was saying that we are to respect each other, have respect for your priest, your provider and your protector. So in this honourable House it’s no exception from a marriage relationship if you as a woman want to come up in your husband’s face and behave like you are a man, my father said then you will get manhandled.”

St Vincent government says no to cannabis for personal use Despite St Vincent and the Grenadines being widely known as one of the biggest producers of cannabis in the Caribbean, the government says it currently has no interest in legalising its use for recreational purposes. Finance Minister Camillo Gonsalves told Parliament that the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration is exploring its options in the production of marijuana for medicinal purposes, but it won’t be going the route of some other Caribbean countries in allowing people to have small amounts of the drug for personal use. The latest country in the region to head that route is Antigua and Barbuda. Just last week, the House of Representatives passed the Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Bill which decriminalises up to 15 grammes of cannabis for personal use. However, Gonsalves warned that “unregulated consumption of recreational marijuana poses a number of risks and challenges that

we do not currently have the data on which to make informed decisions, or the capacity to manage effectively”. He added that in addition to the unknown risks and challenges, there is a “deep divergence of views on the

issue of recreational marijuana in our society”. “We cannot responsibly ignore the deeply held beliefs of such a large section of the Vincentian public,” the minister said.

Florida shooter with history of problems bought his AR-15 legally THE gunman who mowed down 17 students legally bought the weapon he used to wage war on innocents at his former school, according to an attorney for the family with which he lived. Details about Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old who was expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., emerged Wednesday after he returned with an AR-15 assault rifle and opened fire while stalking the halls. Cruz’s adopted mother, Long Island native Lynda Cruz, died in November, and the family he stayed with afterwards said that he already owned his killing machine before he moved in with them. “It was his gun,” family lawyer Jim Lewis said. “The family made him keep it in a locked gun cabinet in the house but he had a key.” Investigators are still piecing together the moments that led to Cruz — who was able to buy the gun despite a history of behavioral issues — returning to the school. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson said that beyond his AR-15, Cruz also had smoke grenades and a gas mask. It was not immediately clear where Cruz was able to obtain the grenades. He was arrested in a nearby neighborhood after he reportedly left the building by blending in with a crowd of evacuating students as cops

arrived. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said that postings on the shooter’s social media profiles, were “very, very disturbing.” Photos emerged Wednesday of Cruz showing off weapons, including a gun and knives, and fellow students said he talked about them often. A Twitter user who claimed to be a classmate of the shooter said that he also “posted pictures of animals he killed gruesomely.”

Beyond general worries about allowing civilians to buy an AR-15s, based off of the military’s M-60, advocates for stricter gun-control laws questioned why someone like Cruz was able to buy one. Language arts teacher Melissa Falkowski, who hid in a closets with her 19 of her students during the attack, said that the “government has failed us and failed our kids” by repeatedly doing nothing in the face of mass shootings. EU diplomats have removed a so-called “punishmen 0t clause” from a draft text of the arrangement for the Brexit transition period, the BBC understands. A footnote published by the European Commission last week suggested that the UK would lose access to elements of the European single market if it broke EU rules during the transition period. But officials have now promised new wording that makes reference to the EU’s standard infringement procedures. Brexit is scheduled for 29 March 2019. The two sides are set to begin

negotiations next month on the terms of transition period after the UK’s departure, which the EU has said should last until 31 December 2020. Theresa May has said a timelimited implementation period of about two years will allow businesses to adjust to changes arising from Brexit and enable the UK to negotiate its future relationship with the EU. The EU has said the UK should abide by all existing rules and regulations during the transition phase and, in text published last week, suggested there would be specific sanctions if this was not respected.

South Africa’s Zuma resigns after pressure from party SOUTH Africa’s embattled President Jacob Zuma has resigned after intense pressure from his own party. In a televised statement, he said he was quitting with immediate effect but said he disagreed with his ANC party’s decision. The ANC had told him to step down or face a vote of no confidence in parliament. The 75-year-old has been facing calls to give way to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC’s new leader. Mr Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, faces numerous allegations of corruption. Earlier on Wednesday, police swooped on the Johannesburg home of the powerful and wealthy Gupta family with whom Mr Zuma has close ties. He began his speech by laughing and joking with members of the press, asking them why they looked so serious. After paying tribute to those whom he had worked with over the years, Mr Zuma said that violence and division within the ANC had

influenced his decision to step down. “No life should be lost in my name and also the ANC should never be divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect,” he said. “Even though I disagree with the decision of the leadership of my organisation, I have always been a

disciplined member of the ANC. “As I leave I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC, the organisation I have served... all of my life.” A meeting of the ANC’s National Executive Committee had announced its decision to recall Mr Zuma on Tuesday and gave him until the end of Wednesday to resign.

PRINCE Henrik of Denmark died Tuesday with his wife, Queen Margrethe, at his side. But he will not be buried in the plot next to hers, breaking a centuries-old royal tradition. The 83-year-old prince, who was hospitalised in January with a lung infection after being diagnosed with dementia last September, had previously said he did not wish to be buried beside his wife over the refusal to name him king. The French-born prince has been unhappy with his title since being named prince consort -- rather than king consort -- upon the couple’s marriage in 1967. “It is no secret that the prince for

many years has been unhappy with his role and the title he has been awarded in the Danish monarchy. This discontent has grown more and more in recent years,” the palace’s communications chief, Lene Balleby, told Danish tabloid BT in August last year. “For the prince, the decision not to be buried beside the queen is the natural consequence of not having been treated equally to his spouse -by not having the title and role he has desired.” Balleby added that the decision had been accepted by the queen. CNN contacted the Danish Royal House for comment on where Prince Henrik will be buried, but did not receive an immediate reply.

Cisco: We’re moving our $67 billion cash pile to the US ANOTHER mountain of money is being brought home to American shores following the new tax law -- and much of it will end up in the pockets of investors. Tech company Cisco (CSCO) said Wednesday it plans to repatriate $67 billion in foreign profits in the coming months. The Silicon Valley firm, which makes gear for computer networks, said it will pass on a significant chunk of that cash to its shareholders over the next two years through share buybacks and increased dividends. In total, Cisco investors are set for a windfall of about $44 billion. It’s the latest big U.S. company to map out its plans to bring home cash that has been stashed overseas for years. Multinational corporations had previously been reluctant to move their piles of offshore money into the U.S. because of the heavy taxes they would have to pay on it. But the tax bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump in December offers firms a oneoff lower tax rate on funds being repatriated to the U.S. The new rules also mean companies can no longer avoid paying taxes on past international profits by holding the cash outside the U.S. They must pay tax on the money whether they bring it back to

the country or not. Moody’s estimated in November that U.S. companies were holding about $1.4 trillion in cash offshore. Five large tech companies -Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), Oracle (ORCL) and Cisco -- accounted for nearly $600 billion of that. Supporters of the tax changes had argued that giving companies an incentive to bring the money home could boost the U.S. economy by promoting hiring and investment. But critics said Main Street wouldn’t feel the effect because many companies would opt to reward shareholders with dividends and stock buybacks. That appears to be what Cisco is doing. And its announcement pleased investors: the company’s stock was up almost 7% in after hours trading. Apple took a different approach last month, promising jobs and investment alongside its plans to move money back to the U.S. It said it would pay $38 billion in taxes on the huge sums it has been keeping overseas and also pledged to create 20,000 jobs and invest $30 billion in U.S. facilities over the next five years. On Wednesday, Cisco also reported a loss of $8.8 billion for the final quarter of 2017 after it took a multibillion dollar charge related to the tax law.

Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dies aged 65 ZIMBABWE’S main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has died in South Africa, a senior official in his MDC party has said. Mr Tsvangirai, 65, a former prime minister, had reportedly been suffering from colon cancer. “He died this evening. The family communicated this to me,” MDC vice president Elias Mudzuri told Reuters. Mr Tsvangirai’s career was marked by a long political struggle against former President Robert Mugabe. He had been beaten and imprisoned numerous times. Announcing Mr Tsvangirai’s death, Mr Mudzuri said on Twitter that the MDC had “lost our icon and fighter for democracy”. Mr Tsvangirai founded the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) in 2000, repeatedly challenging Mr Mugabe during the ex-president’s long grip on power. In the 2008 election, Mr Tsvangirai gained the most votes in the first round but not enough to win outright. Before the second round of voting, Mr Mugabe’s security forces

Johnson warns against a Brexit do-over No one polarises opinion over Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union quite like Boris Johnson, the flamboyant foreign secretary, who in 2016 helped persuade Britons to quit a bloc that he once accused of trying to unify the continent just as Napoleon and Hitler tried to do. So why, exactly, would Mr. Johnson try to woo the large minority who voted to remain? In a speech on Wednesday, Mr. Johnson called on his opponents to unite around his vision of British withdrawal from the European Union, or Brexit, while warning that any rethinking of the decision itself would be a “disastrous mistake.” A second vote would bring “another year of wrangling and turmoil and feuding in which the whole country would lose,” he argued in a speech that skirted around the tough economic questions about withdrawal that have split a bitterly divided British cabinet. Brexit, Mr. Johnson insisted, meant an “outward-looking liberal global future,” and was not “some un-British spasm of bad manners” or a “great V-sign from the cliffs of Dover.” Many who wished to remain in the European Union see it as exactly such a gesture — a blend of nationalism and nostalgia — and analysts rated his prospects of winning them over as close to zero. “The idea that he has traction with remain voters is absurd,” said Tim Bale, a professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, “so it has to be about something else, and

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called on his opponents to unite that has to about of keeping himself fromfrom the back of the scrum,” a term around hisbevision British withdrawal the European Union.

in the public eye.” It would not be the first time. Last year he caused a stir before the Conservative Party’s annual conference by publishing a lengthy essay on his Brexit vision. More recently, he made headlines with calls for higher health spending, perhaps seeking to justify his widely debunked claim that quitting the European Union would free up around $500 million a week for the National Health Service. Years ago, Mr. Johnson’s famously dismissed his prospects of becoming prime minister as being “about as good as the chances of finding Elvis on Mars, or me being reincarnated as an olive.” But more recently — and plausibly — he admitted his ambitions, likening his approach to becoming leader to grabbing a football if it “came loose

from Rugby football akin to a fumble in American football. In 2016 that ball slipped, agonizingly, from his grasp after the Brexit referendum, when Mr. Johnson was abandoned by key allies and forced to withdraw from the contest to replace the former prime minister, David Cameron, who quit after the plebiscite. Theresa May went on to take the crown. But Mr. Johnson may be sensing another moment of opportunity, as Mrs. May struggles to control her cabinet amid calls from some of her own lawmakers for her to step aside. Brexit has caught her in an unforgiving political vise. A “soft”, departure, protecting business by retaining close economic ties to the bloc, is being opposed by Brexit enthusiasts in the cabinet, including Mr. Johnson.

carried out a campaign of violence against opposition supporters, and Mr Tsvangirai withdrew. Mr Mugabe was declared the winner, but an international outcry over allegations of violence and vote-rigging led to a power sharing agreement in which Mr Tsvangirai would serve as prime minister. Mr Tsvangirai ran against Mr Mugabe again in 2013 but lost by a landslide.

THE aid official embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal at the charity Oxfam had allegedly been forced out by another British charity seven years earlier, following an investigation into the use of sex workers. Roland van Hauwermeiren agreed to leave his job working for the charity Merlin in Liberia in 2004, following an investigation into sex parties with local women, according to the humanitarian news website Irin. Merlin, a medical emergency relief charity, has since merged with Save the Children. Van Hauwermeiren went on to work for Oxfam in Chad and Haiti, where the charity’s staff are alleged to have used sex workers. An investigation by the Times found van Hauwermeiren

resigned from his role as the head of mission in Haiti in 2011, after admitting that prostitutes had visited his villa there. He later worked for the French charity Action Against Hunger as country director in Bangladesh. The UK’s Charity Commission has since launched a statutory inquiry into Oxfam amid concerns it might not have “fully and frankly disclosed” all details about the Haiti allegations. The charity’s deputy chief executive, Penny Lawrence, has also resigned, saying she was “desperately sorry”. According to a report by Irin, concerns relating to van Hauwermeiren and his colleagues were reported twice by the Swedish civil servant and former aid worker Amira Malik Miller. Miller alerted both Merlin and the Swedish government’s aid department, which

went on to give almost $750,000 (£540,000) towards Oxfam’s Chad mission, under van Hauwermeiren’s management. “He just goes around the system … from Liberia to Chad, to Haiti, to Bangladesh. Someone should have checked properly,” she told Irin. In 2004, Miller made a formal complaint to Merlin’s head office in London, after witnessing a colleague fondling a young local woman in the charity’s guesthouse, according to Irin. An internal investigation found that the management team, four men, were all paying for sex. The investigation also found they had been using Merlin cars to drive sex workers to and from parties at the charity’s guest house. Van Hauwermeiren denied the findings, but agreed to resign.

Analysing post-mortem samples, an international team of scientists showed that some genes became more active after death.

The results, in the British Medical Journal, showed that if the proportion of ultra-processed food in the diet increased by 10%, then the number of cancers detected increased by 12%.

Ultra-processed foods ‘linked to cancer’ A LINK between highly processed foods and cancer has been suggested by French researchers. They classified foods including cakes, chicken nuggets and massproduced bread as “ultra-processed”. A study of 105,000 people hinted the more of such foods people ate, the greater their risk of cancer. A lot of caution is being expressed about the study, but experts said a healthy diet is best. -Mass-produced packaged breads and buns -Sweet or savoury packaged snacks including crisps -Chocolate bars and sweets -Sodas and sweetened drinks -Meatballs, poultry and fish nuggets -Instant noodles and soups -Frozen or shelf-life ready meals -Foods made mostly or entirely from sugar, oils and fats Diet is already known to affect the risk of cancer. Being overweight is the biggest preventable cause of the disease after smoking and the World Health Organisation says processed meat does slightly increase the risk of cancer. But what about ultra-processed foods? The team - at Universite Sorbonne Paris Cite - used food surveys on two days to work out what people were eating. Those on the study, who were mostly middle-aged women, were followed for an average of five years. The results, in the British Medical Journal, showed that if the proportion of ultra-processed food in the diet increased by 10%, then the number of cancers detected increased by 12%.

During the study: On average, 18% of people’s diet was ultra-processed On average, there were 79 cancers per 10,000 people each year Upping the proportion of processed food by 10% would lead to nine extra cancers per 10,000 people per year The researchers concluded: “These results suggest that the rapidly increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods may drive an increasing burden of cancer in the next decades.” But they said the findings need to “be confirmed by other large-scale” studies and research was needed to establish what could be behind the link. This study is far from the definitive take on ultra-processed foods and cancer. It cannot say ultra-processed foods are a cause of cancer. There are also factors that muddy the waters as people who ate a lot of ultra-processed foods had other behaviours that have been linked to cancer. They were much more likely to smoke, were less active, consumed more calories overall and were more likely to be taking the oral contraceptive. While the researchers did adjust their analysis for this they say their impact “cannot be entirely excluded”. Prof Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s prevention expert, said: “It’s already known that eating a lot of these foods can lead to weight gain, and being overweight or obese can also increase your risk of cancer, so it’s hard to disentangle the effects of diet and weight.”

Overall she said the study was a “warning signal to us to have a healthy diet” but people should not worry about eating a bit of processed food “here and there” as long as they were getting plenty of fruit, vegetables and fibre. Dr Ian Johnson, from the Quadram Institute in Norwich, said the study had “identified some rather weak associations”. But he criticised the vagueness of the term ultra-processed. He said: “The problem is that the definition of ultra-processed foods they have used is so broad and poorly defined that it is impossible to decide exactly what, if any, causal connections have been observed.” For Prof Tom Sanders at King’s College London, the definition of ultra-processed foods throws up too many quirks. He said mass-produced bread would be classed as ultra-processed, but a home-made loaf or bread from a posh local bakery would not. He said: “This classification seems arbitrary and based on the premise that food produced industrially has a different nutritional and chemical composition from that produced in the home or by artisans. This is not the case.” Even the accompanying commentary in the British Medical Journal warned against jumping to conclusions. Martin Lajous and Adriana Monge from the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico, warned “we are a long way from understanding the full implications of food processing for health and well-being”. They said the study was simply “an initial insight”. (BBC)

Genes remain active after death CELLS continue to function even after an individual dies. That’s according to a scientific study published in Nature Communications. Analysing post-mortem samples, an international team of scientists showed that some genes became more active after death. As well as providing an important dataset for other scientists, they also hope that this can be developed into a forensic tool. Inside the cells of our bodies, life plays out under the powerful influence of our genes; their outputs controlled by a range of internal and external triggers. Understanding gene activity provides a perfect insight into what an individual cell, tissue or organ is doing, in health and in disease. Genes are locked away in the DNA present in our cells and when these are switched on, a tell-tale molecule called an RNA transcript is made. Some of the RNA directly controls processes that go on in the cell, but most of the RNA becomes the blueprint for proteins. It’s the RNA transcripts that scientists often measure when they want to know what’s going on in our cells, and we call this analysis transcriptomics. But obtaining samples for study isn’t an easy thing. Blood is relatively easy to get, but lopping off an arm or sticking a needle into a living person’s heart or liver is no trivial undertaking. So, scientists rely on a relatively abundant source of samples - tissues and organs removed after death. Whilst studies of post-mortem samples can provide important insights into the body’s inner workings, it isn’t clear if these samples truly represent what goes on during life. The other confounding factor is that samples are rarely taken immediately after death, instead a body is stored until post-mortem examination and sampling can take place and its impact is unclear.

And it’s this reliance on stored post-mortem samples that concerned Prof Roderic Guigó, a computational biologist based at the Barcelona Institute for Science and Technology and his team. “You would expect that with the death of the individual, there would be a decay in the activity of the genes,” he explained. And this decay might affect proper interpretation of transcriptomics data. To see if this was the case the team used next generation mRNA sequencing on post-mortem specimens collected within 24 hours of death and on a subset of blood samples collected from some of the patients before death and, as Prof Guigó explained, what they discovered was surprising: “There is a reaction by the cells to the death of the individual. We see some pathways, some genes, that are activated and this means that sometime after death there is still some activity at the level of transcription,” he said. Although the exact reason the genes remained active was unclear, Prof Guigó does have one possible explanation: “I would guess that one of the major changes is due to the cessation of flow of blood, therefore I would say probably the main environmental change is hypoxia, the lack of oxygen, but I don’t have the proof for this.” What the study did provide was a set of predictions of post-death RNA level changes for a variety of commonly studied tissues against which future transcriptomic analyses could be calibrated. And the understanding of the changes in RNA levels that occur after death might also be pivotal in future criminal investigations. “We conclude there is a signature or a fingerprint in the pattern of gene expression after death that could eventually be used in forensic science, but we don’t pretend we have now a method that can be used in the field,” said Prof Guigó.

Quantum computers ‘one step closer’ QUANTUM computing has taken a step forward with the development of a programmable quantum processor made with silicon. The team used microwave energy to align two electron particles suspended in silicon, then used them to perform a set of test calculations. By using silicon, the scientists hope that quantum computers will be more easy to control and manufacture. The research was published in the journal Nature. The old adage of Schrödinger’s Cat is often used to frame a basic concept of quantum theory. We use it to explain the peculiar, but important, concept of superposition; where something can exist in multiple states at once. For Schrodinger’s feline friend - the simultaneous states were dead and alive. Superposition is what makes quantum computing so potentially powerful. Standard computer processors rely on packets or bits of information, each one representing a single yes or no answer. Quantum processors are different. They don’t work in the realm of yes or no, but in the almost surreal world of yes and no. This twin-state of quantum information is known as a qubit. To harness their power, you have to link multiple qubits together, a process called entanglement.

With each additional qubit added, the computation power of the processor is effectively doubled. But generating and linking qubits, then instructing them to perform calculations in their entangled state is no easy task. They are incredibly sensitive to external forces, which can give rise to errors in the calculations and in the worst-case scenario make the entangled qubits fall apart. As additional qubits are added, the adverse effects of these external forces mount. One way to cope with this is to include additional qubits whose sole role is to vet and correct outputs for misleading or erroneous data. This means that more powerful quantum computers - ones that will be useful for complex problem solving, like working out how proteins fold or modelling physical processes inside complex atoms will need lots of qubits. Dr Tom Watson, based at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and one of the authors of the paper, told BBC News: “You have to think what it will take to do useful quantum computing. The numbers are not very well defined but it’s probably going to take thousands maybe millions of qubits, so you need to build your qubits in a way that can scale up to these numbers.” In short, if quantum computers are going to take off, you need to come up with an easy way to manufacture

Researchers are taking multiple approaches to building quantum computers; this picture is of the “ion trap” variety.

large and stable qubit processors. And Dr Watson and his colleagues thought there was an obvious solution. “As we’ve seen in the computer industry, silicon works quite well in terms of scaling up using the fabrication methods used”, he said. The team of researchers, which also included scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, turned to silicon to suspend single electron qubits whose spin was fixed by the use of microwave energy. In the superposition state, the electron was spinning both up and down. The team were then able to connect two qubits and programme them to perform trial calculations. They could then cross-check the data generated by the quantum

silicon processor with that generated by a standard computer running the same test calculations. The data matched. The team had successfully built a programmable two-qubit siliconbased processor. Commenting on the study, Prof Winfried Hensinger, from the University of Sussex, said: “The team managed to make a two qubit quantum gate with a very respectable error rate. While the error rate is still much higher than in trapped ion or superconducting qubit quantum computers, the achievement is still remarkable, as isolating the qubits from noise is extremely hard.” He added: “It remains to be seen whether error rates can be realised that are consistent with the concept

of fault-tolerant quantum computing operation. However, without doubt this is a truly outstanding achievement.” And in an accompanying paper, an international team, led by Prof Jason Petta from Princeton University, was able to transfer the state of the spin of an electron suspended in silicon onto a single photon of light. According to Prof Hensinger, this is a “fantastic achievement” in the development of silicon-based quantum computers. He explained: “If quantum gates in a solid state quantum computer can ever be realised with sufficiently low error rates, then this method could be used to connect different quantum computing modules which would allow for a fully modular quantum computer.” (BBC)

New antibiotic family discovered in dirt

Tests show the compounds, called malacidins, annihilate several bacterial diseases that have become resistant to most existing antibiotics, including the superbug MRSA.

US scientists have discovered a new family of antibiotics in soil samples. The natural compounds could be used to combat hard-to-treat infections, the team at Rockefeller University hopes. Tests show the compounds, called malacidins, annihilate several bacterial diseases that have become resistant to most existing antibiotics, including the superbug MRSA. Experts say the work, published in Nature Microbiology, offers fresh hope in the antibiotics arms race. Drug-resistant diseases are one of the biggest threats to global health. They kill around 700,000 people a year, and new treatments are urgently needed. Soil is teeming with millions of different micro-organisms that produce lots of potentially therapeutic compounds, including new antibiotics. Dr Sean Brady’s team at New

York’s Rockefeller University has been busy unearthing them. They used a gene sequencing technique to analyse more than 1,000 soil samples taken from across the US. When they discovered malacidins in many of the samples, they had a hunch it was an important find. They tested the compound on rats that they had given MRSA and it eliminated the infection in skin wounds. The researchers are now working to improve the drug’s effectiveness in the hope that it can be developed into a real treatment for people. Dr Brady said: “It is impossible to say when, or even if, an early stage antibiotic discovery like the malacidins will proceed to the clinic. “It is a long, arduous road from the initial discovery of an antibiotic to a clinically used entity.”

Entertainment More than a movie, ‘Black Panther’ is a movement BLACK people have been striving to remind the world for years that Africa is a continent, not a country. A continent made up of nations rich with histories and achievements in fields from the arts to mathematics. But such representation has seldom been portrayed by Hollywood. Then along came “Black Panther,” which opens in theaters across the country on Friday. Chadwick Boseman stars as T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther, who returns to the fictitious African nation of Wakanda to take reign as king after his father was killed in “Captain America: Civil War.” The fearsome warrior superhero was first created as a Marvel comic book character by Stan Lee and his colleague Jack Kirby in the 1960s, a time when African Americans were battling for civil rights . Boseman spoke with CNN about how the comic’s progressive nature -- set in a technically advanced African nation during a time people of African descent were fighting for

equality -- drew him to the project. “Having studied at Howard [a historically black university in Washington D.C.] and having various different experiences within our culture, I knew it was an opportunity to pull from real things, real achievements, real African culture and place it in this movie to make it real.” Boseman said. “If anybody believes that Africa didn’t have an empire, didn’t have architecture, didn’t have art, didn’t have science, you see it in this movie.” Anticipation for the film has inspired think pieces and funny memes. A colourful spoken word piece has gone viral as “Black Panther” mania grows. There’s almost always excitement surrounding a Marvel film, but “Black Panther” is more than just a movie. It’s a movement. Consider this: a film that explores what it means to be black, centered on a black superhero, featuring a mostly-black cast, and helmed by a black director is on pace to be one of

Marvel’s biggest blockbusters. Tickets have sold out around the country. Teachers are planning to take entire classes. Facebook gatherings have sprung up around screenings. Actress Olivia Spencer went public with her desire to buy out a movie theater in Mississippi to give fans, who otherwise not may not be able to afford it, a chance to see the film. “Black Panther” co-star Michael B. Jordan told CNN the movie is “super important” and “impactful for our culture moving forward.” “It’s humbling and very surreal that this is a major introduction, almost a reintroduction of black fantasy, sci-fi, mythology, for the generation growing up,” Jordan said. “I can’t wait for Halloween to see everyone dressing up as the Dora Milaje [the female special forces in the film], Black Panther and Killmonger [the super villain Jordan portrays].” The hashtag “WhatBlackPantherMeansToMe” has been trending.

“Black Panther” offers a star-studded cast made up of African and African American actors.

At least two actors in the former tv show, Charles in Charge, have alleged abuse by Scott Baio (standing right).

Spokesman: Scott Baio denies sexual misconduct claims The Saint Pablo tour was performed on a “floating” platform, suspended above the audience.

West resolves $10m Lloyd’s of London lawsuit KANYE West and insurers Lloyd’s of London have “amicably resolved” his $10m (£7.1m) lawsuit over cancelled tour dates. The Saint Pablo Tour had 21 dates left in November 2016 when West pulled the remaining shows after falling ill. Lloyd’s alleged the musician had used marijuana and refused to pay out, citing a clause in the contract about alcohol and drug use. West, 40, then sued the insurer, citing his treatment at a psychiatric

centre. A judge in California dismissed the case on Wednesday after being requested to do so by lawyers from both sides. West’s lawyer and Lloyd’s both declined to comment, other than to say the matter had been resolved “amicably”. The initial lawsuit, filed in August 2017 by West and his touring company - Very Good Touring Inc detailed how West quit because of his “strained, confused and erratic”

behaviour during earlier stages of the tour. The cancellation of the last 21 dates came following West’s abandonment of a show in Sacramento. He had performed just three songs during the concert before embarking on an unscripted rant, criticising Facebook, Jay-Z and Hillary Clinton. The rapper then spent eight days in a neuropsychiatric centre in Los Angeles, where it was decided he could not continue with the tour, the lawsuit said.

SCOTT Baio “is denying each and every one of the allegations” made against him by two of his former co-stars on “Charles in Charge,” his spokesman said Wednesday. Brian Glicklich read a brief statement from Baio at a news conference held in response to the latest claim of misconduct. Former “Charles in Charge” actor Alexander Polinsky said at a news conference earlier in the day that Baio assaulted and “mentally tortured” him when he was a child star on the show in the 1980s. He said Baio exposed himself, discussed gay sex acts and once threw a hot cup of tea in his face. Another star of the series, Nicole Eggert, came forward last month with claims that Baio sexually assaulted her when she was a minor

while they were working together. Baio called those allegations false and said he and Eggert were involved in a consensual relationship when she was of legal age. On Wednesday, Jennifer McGrath, an attorney for Baio, characterised the claims by Polinsky and Eggert as “ever changing” and evidence of “continual hunger for publicity.” Glicklich also suggested the allegations were motivated by a desire for media attention. McGrath confirmed, however, that the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating Eggert’s allegations after the actress filed a police report against Baio last week. Glicklich said attorney Leonard Levine would represent Baio in that matter, and that he would be presenting the LAPD with evidence to refute Eggert’s claims.

British screen industry launches guidelines about harassment THE British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the British Film Institute (BFI) on Wednesday issued the first set of guidelines to tackle harassment and bullying in the screen industries. In response to what they referred to as “urgent and systemic issues revealed over the past months,” the partnership put forward eight key principles in consultation with organizations, employees and freelance workers across the entertainment sector. The guidelines outline a zerotolerance policy toward abuse and promote a more inclusive workplace for employees working within the screen industries. Other measures include

appointing two designated workers trained to handle issues both on- and off-set. A review is also due to take place every six months to ensure the guidance is addressing the needs of the entertainment industry. This comes less than two weeks after BAFTA formally terminated Harvey Weinstein’s membership, which was suspended in October of last year following allegations of rape and sexual harassment against the American movie mogul. Actresses including Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow and Uma Thurman have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, leading to campaigns including the #metoo movement.

Emma Watson laid out the guidelines in a video released by the British Film Institute.

Through a spokeswoman, Weinstein has repeatedly denied “any allegations of nonconsensual sex.” Actor and activist Emma Watson backed the British entertainment industry’s plans in a video outlining the proposed measures. She said: “Led by the BFI and BAFTA, the industry has come together to agree these principles and guidance -- developed by people

who understand the subtleties of the hierarchy on a film set and what it’s like to work strange, unsociable hours.” “I hope these principles become second nature for everyone; they are not just about protecting individuals but are also an important step in embracing a greater diversity of voices -- and eventually having an entertainment industry that actually

represents the world we live in,” Watson said. The 2018 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will take place in London on Sunday, with reports that British actors will follow the lead of the Golden Globe awards with a red carpet “blackout” that saw participants wear black to show their solidarity with victims of sexual harassment.

Amy Schumer reportedly married chef Chris Fischer this week in a secret ceremony. Taylor Swift had been sued over her hit single Shake It Off,

Schumer secretly marries US Judge dismisses Taylor Swift chef Chris Fischer in L.A. ‘haters’ case as too ‘banal’ STAR Amy Schumer ducked out of the spotlight by marrying her beau chef Chris Fischer in a secret ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Schumer, 36, and Fischer, 37, reportedly wed in Los Angeles, though the location of the ceremony is unclear, Us Weekly first reported. She later posted a series of images from the wedding to her Instagram account with the caption: “Yup.” The comedian only confirmed her relationship with the James Beard Award-winner on Instagram three days ago with a photo of them kissing each other at Ellen DeGeneres’ 60th birthday party.

They were first spotted out together at Café Altro Paradiso in New York City in November 2017. Fischer is the author of “Beetlebung Farm Cookbook” and runs Beetlebung Farm in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. His restaurant, Beach Plum, was named a favorite for former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama in Esquire Magazine. Prior to tying the knot with the accomplished chef, Schumer dated furniture designer Ben Hanisch before calling it quits in May 2017, after a year and a half of dating. (NYDailynews)

THE phrase “haters gonna hate” is too “banal” to be copyrighted, a US judge has declared. Judge Michael W Fitzgerald made the comments while dismissing a copyright case against Taylor Swift. Songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler sued the star last year, arguing her single Shake It Off stole from their composition, Playas Gon’ Play. They said the chorus of her song relied on their lyric, “playas, they gonna play, and haters, they gonna hate”. Although short phrases are generally immune from copyright

claims, the writers argued that combining the two thoughts was original enough to warrant protection. Fitzgerald disagreed - in quite some style. “The lynchpin of this entire case is thus whether or not the lyrics ‘Playas, they gonna play, and haters, they gonna hate’ are eligible for protection,” he wrote. “In the early 2000s, popular culture was adequately suffused with the concepts of players and haters to render the phrases ‘playas… gonna play’ or ‘haters… gonna

hate’, standing on their own, no more creative than ‘runners gonna run’; ‘drummers gonna drum’; or ‘swimmers gonna swim.’ “The concept of actors acting in accordance with their essential nature is not at all creative; it is banal. “The allegedly infringed lyrics are short phrases that lack the modicum of originality and creativity required for copyright protection,” Fitzgerald added. The judge also criticised the plaintiffs “clunky” legal arguments, before approving Swift’s motion to dismiss the case.

Cornbury Music Festival features female-centric line-up A FEMALE-LED line-up has been announced for the Cornbury Music Festival. Alanis Morissette will headline the Saturday at the event which takes place from 13 to 15 July at Great Tew, Oxfordshire. The day also features Mavis Staples, Amy Macdonald, Nina Nesbitt, Pixie Lott, and PP Arnold. Organiser Hugh Phillimore said: “There’s no excuse, none whatsoever, to not have line-ups like this across the board.” Festivals have been coming under increasing criticism in recent years for being too male-dominated. Wireless Festival was criticised by Lily Allen, who posted a doctored version of the event’s

poster, with all the male names erased. When asked about his decision, Mr Phillimore said: “I didn’t want to make a big noise about it, but for me it’s just a nice statement, and you’re the first to have spotted it. “I love the fact that it’s an allfemale line-up. “Alanis is a big, rocking female artist, Mavis is legendary and probably one of the oldest female performers working, and the rest of it dropped into place. “If I really tried, the whole weekend would be all female. It’s not that hard. There are loads of great female acts.” The acts booked to play the

Alanis Morissette will headline at the event at Great Tew, Oxfordshire.

remaining two days of the festival will be announced on 1 March. “Warning - it features further women,” Mr Phillimore joked.

Cornbury Music Festival began in 2004 and has seen appearances from Amy Winehouse, Blondie, Robert Plant, Tom Jones and Elvis Costello.

Its 2017 event was set to be the last but the organiser overturned the decision after a “wave of support”. (BBC)

The National Insurance (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 Bill amends the National Insurance Ordinance to make provision for the unpaid national insurance certificate and the garnishment of wages.

UNPAID NATIONAL INSURANCE CERTIFICATE A provision has been made in relation to the civil recovery of sums owed to the NIB under the Ordinance, that the Director will have the discretion to certify the sums owed in a certificate called an unpaid national insurance certificate, which would be filed and registered in the Magistrates’ court. The certificate would have the effect of a judgment after twenty-one (21) days, unless the person to whom the certificate relates files a defense within fourteen (14) days of receipt of the certificate. The vast majority of the National Insurance Board cases filed in court take a very long time before a decision is given. Very often cases are on the court docket in excess of a year. The NIB is seeking to expedite this process for the benefit of employees who are depending on contributions to be paid in order for their claims to be processed and paid. The proposed amendment would greatly reduce the amount of time that NIB cases are in the court system before a judgment is given.

GARNISHMENT OF WAGES The National Insurance Ordinance now makes provision for the garnishment of wages where a person is indebted to the Fund and there is liability by a third party to make a payment to the person who owes the NIB. The Director in such circumstances may deliver to the person (third party), a demand for payment not exceeding one-third (1/3) of the sum payable to the person until the debt is fully paid. Any person who receives a demand for payment and fails to pay the Board the sums specified commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine of $5000 or to a term of imprisonment of six months or to both.

TURKS AND CAICOS WEEKLY NEWS

Justice has been served, say victims of ex-football coach THREE of Barry Bennell’s victims have told how he turned their dreams into a “horrendous nightmare” after the former youth football coach was convicted of 43 sex assaults on boys. Bennell, who worked at Manchester City and Crewe Alexandra, was found guilty of abusing 11 boys aged eight to 15. Speaking outside Liverpool Crown Court, another victim, Andy Woodward, said “justice has been served”. It is understood 86 others have come forward to say they were victims. The jury, which deliberated over five days, had been told of Bennell’s abuse of 12 boys between 1979 and 1990. Before the case he admitted seven charges of indecent assault on three boys, two of whom were also part of the allegations he was tried on. He was found guilty of 36 charges on Tuesday, and a further seven counts on Thursday. Bennell, who is now known

as Richard Jones, appeared in court via videolink during the five-week trial due to illness. He could be seen shaking his head and muttering when the final guilty verdicts were returned by a 10-1 majority. He will be sentenced on Monday and will be produced from custody to attend the hearing. It was the fourth time Bennell had been convicted of abusing boys. The jury was told he had previously received jail sentences in the UK and in the US in 1995, 1998 and 2015. The latest police investigation began in November 2016 when Andy Woodward gave interviews about his experiences to the Guardian and BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme. Speaking outside court after the verdict, the ex-Crewe defender said: “Justice has been served today and people will be able to move on with their lives including myself.” Mr Woodward said he believed “the football clubs

Bary Bennell could be seen shaking his head and muttering when the final guilty verdicts were announced

that were accountable for this... could have stopped this for so many years... And I think now’s the time that that comes sort of out. “And I would personally like after 15 months, an apology from Crewe Alexandra for what happened to us boys.” Ex-Manchester City youth player Chris Unsworth, who was abused by Bennell when

he was a scout at the club, stood alongside Micky Fallon and Steve Walters as he read a statement. The three men are supporters of the Offside Trust, which was set up by exprofessional players to support abuse survivors. Mr Unsworth said: “We stand before you today as men united in justice, but this is about so much more than us.”

Mr Fallon, who was targeted by Bennell at Crewe, said: “We stand before you today as men united but, at the same time, we were very young boys. We were little boys with a dream and our innocence was shattered. Our dreams turned into the most horrendous nightmare.” Prosecutors described Bennell as a “predatory paedophile” who abused boys on an “industrial scale”. They told the trial he had a “power hold” over the aspiring professional players. Boys were abused at his home - including a property in Derbyshire where he had arcade games and a puma and a monkey - on trips away, and in his car on the way to and from training, they said. Det Insp Sarah Oliver, who led the investigation, said Bennell had betrayed the trust of the young players. “As a football coach he should have provided nothing more than safety and support for the players in his care,” she said.

“Instead he abused them. He also abused the trust of their families who had placed them into that care so they could pursue their dreams of being professional footballers. He has shattered those dreams and left them burdened for decades.” In a statement, Crewe Alexandra expressed its “deepest sympathies” to Bennell’s victims and said it worked closely with the police investigation. It added it was was not aware of any sexual abuse by Bennell or had received any complaint before or during his employment with the club. Manchester City offered “heartfelt sympathy to all victims for the unimaginably traumatic experiences they have endured”. The club said it was keen to speak to any survivor or witness to sexual abuse which might be connected to Manchester City or which could support a review it launched after the latest allegations were raised in 2016.

TURKS AND CAICOS WEEKLY NEWS

Norway’s Svindal makes history as oldest Olympic skiing champion

Former driving coach of Jamaica’s women’s bobsleigh team, Sandra Kiriasis in Germany on January 20.

Jamaican women’s bobsleigh team coach quits MAKE that rancorous, rather than cool, runnings. Winter Olympic debuts are supposed to be joyful affairs, but the much heralded Jamaican female bobsleigh team’s participation at PyeongChang 2018 has turned sour after the abrupt departure of their German coach. The Jamaican women’s involvement in the games had attracted lots of attention, given it came 30 years after the men’s bobsleigh team made their appearance in the 1988 Calgary Games, which inspired the popular film “Cool Runnings.” But on Wednesday, it was announced on Twitter that their coach -- former Olympian Sandra Kiriasis -- had “elected” to leave the team. “Sandra Kiriasis has elected not to continue her position with Jamaica Bobsleigh,” said the Jamaican Bobsled Federation (JBSF). “We are deeply disappointed in her decision to leave the program.” But it gets worse. JBSF President Christian Stokes later reportedly described Kiriasis as a “hugely

destructive force on the team.” Subsequently, Kiriasis responded in a Facebook post, saying that she did not understand “the reasons behind the decision of Jamaican Bobsleigh Federation and certainly will not allow herself to be used as a puppet on a string.” After Kiriasis’ departure, there were reports that she said she would be taking the sled with her. Kiriasis confirmed that she had rented a bobsled in Winterberg, Germany, but did not directly address whether she would be taking it back. The JBSF told CNN that Kiriasis does not own the sled and they “do not anticipate any changes in our equipment” or “any impact on the Jamaican bobsled athletes’ performance at the Winter Olympic Games.” JBSF media manager Kathleen Pulito emphasized that Kiriasis would not be replaced during the Games, adding that “many nations have offered assistance or coaching staff and any equipment we may need in case an issue should arise.” (CNN)

HE’S one of Norway’s bestloved and most successful winter athletes and now Aksel Lund Svindal has made history by becoming the oldest skier to win Olympic gold and his country’s first in the speed discipline. The 35-year-old beat close friend and countryman Kjetil Jansrud into silver with Swiss world champion Beat Feuz in bronze in what is often considered the blue riband event of the Winter Olympics. Svindal has been one of the dominant speed skiers of his generation with multiple world titles and World Cup crowns as well as Olympic super-G gold, downhill silver and giant slalom bronze in Vancouver in 2010. Olympic downhill gold had always eluded him, but on a perfect day at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre after a week of high wind and delays, Svindal edged Sochi super-G champion Jansrud by 0.12 seconds with Feuz 0.18 secs back. “When you cross the finish line and you see that you’ve had a good race and you’re in the medals or even for the gold, you don’t think too much about the history books,” Svindal told reporters afterwards. “It’s emotional, and being in the Olympics and competing for gold and being able to get it, for me at least those feelings are much stronger than any history ever written.” Svindal is three months older than Austria’s Mario Matt was when he won the slalom at the age of 34 in Sochi. American Bode Miller became skiing’s oldest male medalist when he won bronze

COMMUNITY REPORTER We are looking for a young, go-getter with strong writing skills, who Is interested in becoming a News Reporter. Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway won his first Olympic downhill gold in Pyeongchang.

at Sochi at the age of 36. The Norwegian, known as an “Attacking Viking” alongside Jansrud, has won five world titles, including the downhill in 2007 and 2013, and two World Cup overall crowns alongside 35 World Cup wins. However, downhill skiing legend Franz Klammer told CNN in the build-up to the Games a skier’s greatness was judged on whether they won Olympic gold and said he would have judged himself a “failure” without it. In his second Olympics in 2010, Svindal missed out on downhill gold by 0.07 seconds behind the winner, Didier Défago of Switzerland, and was only 0.02 secs ahead of Miller in bronze. Four years later in Sochi, Svindal could only finish

fourth in downhill after carrying Norway’s flag at the opening ceremony. Since then has endured

a string of serious injuries which have forced him to miss large chunks of the World Cup circuit.

Zaidan-Jones nets eight for Predators in PHL MADDOX Zaidan-Jones scored five goals in the second period, including four consecutive strikes within seven minutes to carry the Projetech Predators to an 8-6 victory in a second week clash of the Bantam Division in the Provo Hockey League. It was total dominance for the 10-year-old as he scored all eight goals last Saturday against the Coco Bistro Bruins. The Bruins had made

a late push in the first period, at the Graceway Sports Centre, after scoring four straight goals to go up 5-3 at the break, but they could not restrict Zaidan-Jones in the second. The Bruins were led by Takeem Williams and Max Scholar (also an assist) who scored two goals each. Olivia Park and Clayton Thomas (also an assist) added one each. team in the division. Against the Turkberry Hurricanes, they scored five unanswered goals in the second period to claim a 7-2 win. Jack Blain led the winners with four goals and an assist, while Aaron Ellis added a pair and an assist. Harry Whent scored a goal and made two assists. Samuel French led the Hurricanes with two goals. MIDGET DIVISION In the Midget Division, the Gansevoort Gators suffered backto-back defeats. They went down to the Saunders Greyhounds and to defending champions the Villa del Mar Flyers. In their clash against the Greyhounds, the Gators drew even by the end of the first period with three unanswered goals after their opponents had taken a 4-1 lead, but in the second period Bradley Ayer scored three times to seal the game. In the 9-6 win, Jahson Forbes and Jeremiah Garland assisted Ayer with two goals each, while Joshua Saunders and Sebastian Turbyfield added one each. Harry Schofield, who scored three goals and Zachary Scholar, who finished with two goals and three assists, led the Gators. Colin Forbes added the other goal. Against the Flyers, the Gators lost 4-7. Schofield scored twice, while Scholar again made three assists, to go with a goal. Sean Mcgurk also registered a mark on the score sheet. Carson Greatrex, who scored four of his five goals (also an assist) in the second period, led the Flyers. Tristan Grandsire added the others.

Eagles and Spartans are latest victors in PABA High School League THE CHHS Senior Eagles and the BWIC Spartans are the latest winners of the Provo Amateur Basketball Association (PABA) High School League. The two teams, however, had contrasting victories when they competed at the Graceway Sports Centre on Monday last. The Spartans edged out the CHHS B Team 32-30 in game one, despite Caleb Moore scoring a double-double for the Eagles. Moore scored 14 points, pulled down 10 boards and made five steals. Braden Higgs led the winners with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists. In the second clash, the CHHS Seniors soared over the TCI College Wildcats 47-20. the Wildcats, given that they lost to the dominant Maranatha Blizzards last Friday afternoon (33-16). On Monday Navardo Higgs led

the Eagles with 12 points, while Tahj Delancy scored five points, three assist and three steals for the depleted college team.

Maddox Zaidan-Jones scored eight goals for the Projetech Predators.

Raymond Burey scored a hat-trick.

Burey nets hat-trick for dominant Jaguars RAYMOND Burey scored a hattrick to push his team, the Academy Jaguars, to a 4-1 win over Beaches last Saturday in the Gilley’s Enterprises Provo Premier League. Burey’s goals also took him to the top of the league table with five. The game turned out to be a little more one-sided than was expected. The Jaguars, who had asserted themselves with a convincing 6-0 win against the Academy Eagles in their opener two weeks ago, proved that they are one of the most dominant teams this season. Burey could have scored more than three

goals, but he did not convert all his shots. There were also strong performances by other members of the team; notable Junior Paul, Patrick Alouidor and Jose Elcius in attack and Jeff Beljour and Tilus at the back along with goalkeeper Evelson Jean. Lenford Singh worked hard up front for Beaches, but looked too isolated generally. An injury to Ainsworth Reid in the first half and players missing due to work commitments did not help. Danar Lewis converted a late penalty as a consolation for Beaches.

Williams helps MVP to Milo Meet record DELANO Williams ran a blistering third leg for the Maximising Velocity and Power (MVP) Track and Field Club, when they competed in the Milo Western Relays last Saturday at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay. The 24-year-old told the Weekly News that he was excited to compete in his first team event for the club, which he joined in early October last year. It was my first time [in a team

event for MVP] and I was excited to take part. I haven’t competed there [at Milo Relays] since I left high school.” The Grand Turk born, who competes for Great Britain in international competitions, did not disappoint in the 4X200M race. He and his teammates: Tyuendo Tracy, Kavean Smith and Rusheed McDonald claimed an easy win. The MVP team ran 1:23.30 to edge out the 2015 meet record which stood at 1:23.25.

The 2017 U12 team won TCI’s first overseas competition.

WESTON CUP AND SHOWCASE:

U13 Boys excited and confident ONE year ago, our national U12 team won TCI’s first overseas football competition. The team played unbeaten at the Weston Cup and Showcase, which was held in Florida. This weekend, our boys will again travel for the competition, but this time around they will compete in the U13 competition. According to Coach Neil Coles, the boys are: “Excited and confident and we hope to do ourselves justice.” The U13 team is scheduled to travel with three other teams. Our Boys U10, Boys U12 and Girls U11

teams are all set to compete. The tournament will be played in the heart of Broward County, in Weston, Plantation, Miramar, and Davie, Florida. According to Coles, the squad has remained mostly intact. “The same victorious squad are returning this year along with Devar Lewis from North Caicos and Kayden Bobb, who has stepped up from a younger age group.” The coach pointed out that although the young boys are confident it will be different this

year since the team would have to play 11-a-side football on full size pitches. Since the team only has two substitutes, Coles feels that their conditioning will be tested to the fullest. The coach also said that the teams will start the competition on a sad note, since they were informed that one of the victims of the Parkland shooting was scheduled to play the tournament. “Our thoughts go out to that young girl’s family and friends.”
