She said: “I cannot overemphasize the importance that the civil service plays in managing the affairs of the country. “From healthcare to education to security, from doctors to lawyers to accountants, teachers, police, nurses, architects, grounds men, maintenance men, cleaners, these persons all play very important roles and are worthy of being recognized. “The civil service has made great strides and improvements in various areas over the years and will continue to do so as we seek to Build Excellence in Public Service.” Williams added that the overall aim is to continue to strengthen the ties within the service by creating a highly motivated, efficient and

effective public service that is well equipped and able to meet the demands of the public. Meantime, Premier Rufus Ewing acknowledged that civil service continues to be one of key areas of priority of his government as it seeks to provide much needed services to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He said: “We have invested heavily into the public service through the implementation of the Pay and Grading Review, across the board salary increase, training, development and much needed resources and will continue to do so. “I, like many of you value the services that our staff provides and is happy to be a part of recognizing and honoring them for their services.” Civil Service Week 2016 will kick start with ecumenical services around the Turks and Caicos Islands

on September 23rd; civil servants will join various churches on each island to ask God for his continuous blessings on the service. This will be followed by
individual staff appreciation events on Salt Cay, South, Middle and North Caicos, culminating with a Grand Awards and Appreciation Gala in Providenciales on Friday September 23rd which will seek to pay tribute to over 100 long serving civil servants with continued service for periods over 20, 30 and 40 years, along with a number of other MVP, Leadership and other awards in recognition of persons service. The events will then close out with a Family Fun Day and Inter Ministry Competition in Grand Turk where entertainment will be provided by civil servants, DJ’s L32, Wally G and Meenie Man among others attractions. Only recently, the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands launched a new partnership with
the Cayman Islands to improve the performance of the civil services of both countries. The new partnership is geared at enhancing training, professional development and performance management in the civil service. On August 8, Deputy Governor’ Anya Williams accompanied by the Director of her office Mr. Tito Lightbourne and Human Resources Director Mr. Mark Greenway visited the Cayman Islands to commence talks with officials in this regard. During the course of their visit the Deputy Governor and her team had the opportunity to engage with Cayman`s Deputy Governor Franz Manderson and his team on areas of mutual interest and how both territories could work to improve the services that their agencies provide to the general public.
Minister of tourism to attend CTO state of the industry conference The Minister of Tourism, accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board, the TCHTA, and the Junior Minister of Tourism will attend the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) State of the Industry Conference from September 14-16 in Barbados. CTO’s State of the Industry Conference is the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s annual convocation where Caribbean tourism practitioners, policy makers and strategic partners, at the highest levels, gather to discuss issues, identify solutions and generally develop courses of action that will benefit the tourism industry in the Caribbean. Speakers of international acclaim will provide best case practices and winning strategies on a wide range of topics that are critical to the growth of regional tourism, all with a view toward the development of a sustainable tourism industry, that will position the Caribbean as the most desirable, year-round warm weather destination by 2017. At this year’s conference, the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Porsha Stubbs-Smith will be presenting to the delegation on the topic: “Delivering the Luxury Experience”. This session examines how Caribbean destinations can re-craft their value propositions in the luxury travel market in order to deliver a

luxury experience and cash in on this rapidly growing segment. Concurrently, the Junior Minister of Tourism, Ms. Kayanna Gibson aims to deliver a stellar performance in hopes of achieving overall victory at the annual Caribbean Tourism Youth Congress scheduled for Day 4 of the 5-Day conference. A staple on CTO’s program, the Caribbean Tourism Youth Congress features the “National Junior Ministers of Tourism” comprising of students between the ages of 14-17 from several CTO member countries. The Caribbean Tourism Youth Congress is structured to mirror a CTO Board of Directors’ Meeting with an agenda and topics on salient tourism issues which participants
have to research beforehand. The Junior Ministers must come prepared to discuss one topic, sharing their vision for the future direction of regional tourism. A “mystery” question will also be asked and each student will be expected to give a response. Delegates should expect a thought-provoking and spirited exchange of views among future leaders of the Region as the young debaters vie for important prizes and the chance to be a youth ambassador for tourism. The Caribbean Youth Congress is one of the vehicles through which CTO encourages the best and brightest young minds from the region to consider tourism as a career. The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), with headquarters in Barbados and offices in New York and London, is the Caribbean’s tourism development agency comprising membership of 28 countries and territories including Dutch, English, French and Spanish, as well as a myriad of private sector allied members. The organization provides specialized support and technical assistance in sustainable tourism development, marketing, communications, advocacy, human resource development, event planning & execution and research & information technology.(By Olivia Rose )

No child left behind
New national education curriculum introduced BY OLIVIA ROSE
IN AN effort to advance and improve the learning experience of every child in the Turks and Caicos Islands, ‘no child will be left behind’ under the new National Education Curriculum. The new curriculum, which has been touted under the slogan ‘no child left behind,” aims to boost the holistic potential of students through improved teaching strategies. The prospectus was launched during a press conference at the Office of the Premier on September 8, 2016. According to the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Cherylann Jones, the new/revised curriculum is tailored for six primary schools in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Jones noted that the revision started in 2013 when the Ministry commissioned a consultation on
Ministry of Education officials launch the new national curriculum
Education across the country. She said: “That consultation took us around the islands; it was led by a team of local experts who went around getting views from the public, communities, stakeholders on what they would like to see regarding educational reform. “One of the key things coming out of the consultation exercise was the need to look at the curriculum and ensure that the teaching and learning that took place in the school was creating this new child who could function, not only in the Turks and Caicos Islands, but anywhere in the world.” This vision, she said, led to the crafting of a new syllabus that is designed to bring out the best in every child.
“This child would be a creative, innovative, a thinker, entrepreneurial etc. That theme resonated throughout the consultations and it took us to the point where it was important for us to do some recruitment of a person that would lead the process of the reform. According to Permanent Secretary, Rhonda Blackman-Smith, who has extensive experience developing learning plans for institutions, was then selected to draft the revised syllabus. Speaking at the press conference, Education Minister Akeirra Missick lauded the new curriculum as historic. She noted that the new curriculum seeks to create a well-rounded ‘21st century child’. “We seek with this review that this child will be not only a mover
and shaker in the development of this country, but would be a free thinker. “It has been a long time coming that we moved away from the standardized teaching methods that has been very traditional around the world, but also here in this region where the teacher is the star of the classroom and the students are just the sponges, and they`re there to soak up what is being provided to them in terms of learning from their teacher. “This 21st century child that this curriculum will now develop will put the emphasis on the child; we have modeled this curriculum for a childcentered approach. “We envision that this approach will assist us in developing necessary teaching methods and retraining of our teachers.”
Blackman-Smith called the new curriculum fun and said this first of its kind developmental tool will run this school year for kindergarten to grade 2 and be evaluated at the end of the 2017 academic year. Also speaking to the importance of the curriculum and its revolutionary approach, curriculum development officer Rhonda Blackman-Smith, noted that the era for chalk and talk is over. “Our model is where the child is at the center of what we are doing. That being said, we have started to develop a curriculum that is broad, balanced, relevant and coherent, that meets the diversity of the Turks and Caicos Islands.” In this vein Blackman-Smith asserted that the new approach will spark a more engaged classroom experience, where children are able to ask questions and freely expresses their interests. “We`re looking at materials where children will be able to manipulate and take active learning in the process. WE are looking at a process where teachers will no longer be the face of the stage but they will be facilitators of knowledge, guiding our students along in the process.” The new curriculum will be implemented in schools across the TCI this new term.
Police say that residents should play collaborative role in combating crime BY DAISY HANDFIELD IN AN effort to diminish crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), press officer for the police force, Kevin Clarke, spoke on safety tips for residents and visitors alike. In an interview on Wednesday, Clarke said that the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) is committed to ensuring public safety, reducing fear and incidences of crimes in the TCI, but the public had to play a collaborative role in the combat. He said: “From time to time crime prevention tips are posted on our website, social media pages, and the newspapers for awareness to the public, but they apparently are not taken seriously. “There are reports of persons getting burglarized because they left their window or door unlock and
went to bed or went out. “We still get reports of vehicles being stolen because the owners left the keys in the ignition, or vehicle being vandalized because owners left items such as handbags, purse or valuable items visible where they can be seen. “All these are crimes of opportunity and make persons vulnerable to becoming victims.” Clarke said that crime occurs because many times people open themselves and their families to criminal opportunities, which make a lot of individuals vulnerable to becoming victims. “Talking to strangers and taking for granted one’s safety outside the home make us easy prey to criminals. “In the fight against crime, knowing that the worst can happen makes you less prone to be a victim and more confident of avoiding
Police press officer, Kevin Clarke
disasters. “Protecting yourself, your family and your home is a matter of responsibility that cannot be taken on by anyone else,” he said. The press officer said that residents
and visitors should ensure that all doors and windows have working locks; all entry points to households should be securely locked to prevent unnoticed entry. He also encouraged people to make it a habit to check that all doors and windows are locked at night before going to sleep, because the dark of the night was the best camouflage for criminals. Clarke said: “People should keep porches, yards, and all entrances to their house and garage well lighted. “Leave lights on inside your house when you go out for the evening. “Also, keep a record of the important information of all household facilities and equipment, such as tv., laptop, cell phones, radio, video cassette recorder, refrigerator, VCR and washing machine. “Have an inventory of your jewellery and other precious items
and documents like birth, baptismal and marriage certificates.” Clarke explained that cash from businesses and other valuables should be stored in the bank, because hiding them inside locked drawers does not guarantee that they will be safe from the knowing eyes and practiced moved of robbers. “Provide family members with their own keys to the house. This is safer than leaving the key in a secret place, one that can be discovered by any person who takes the time to watch your movements when you leave your home and come back at night. “If you and your family are going on a vacation, ask a neighbour to watch your home, or ask a relative to stay in your home while you are away. An empty house is a prime target for criminal elements,” Clarke concluded.

A Weekly News column that puts you on the spot for your opinions on the issues of the day
RUNNING FOR THE MONEY? With a record number candidates seeking election this time around, the question must be asked: are they running to serve the country, or are they doing it for the money? Newcomer candidate Robert Been Jr. has charged that some candidates are running purely for the money. What are your thoughts?
Take the beam out
That new candidate needs to sweep his own door or take the beam out of his own eyes before he can others. The Bible says, let the wheat and the tiers grow together until the day of harvest. It also says you shall know them by their fruits......really and truly many of them just like Mr.Robert Been JR have not displayed any distinguishable fruits worth mentioning.....no civic involvement or social contributions. So Peter is no better than Paul in these circumstances.
Breath of fresh air
Breath of fresh air and the game is over. The two traditional Parties have not served this country well in the past and Mr. Been is too young to know this. The voters are now politically aware and have found a way to break loose from their captivity by running as independents and would indeed cause some people to be upset. The days of political ignorance is now gone. Thanks partly to social media and the very investment which successive Government made in the lives of young Belongers many years ago. They have completed their education abroad and have returned home to make a difference and the old guards were not intelligent enough to realise what this investment meant. Maybe we would have been better off if we had more intelligent and informed politicians running this country back then.
Purely for the money
I believe some of the candidates are running purely for money, particularly the Independent at large candidates. Two of the Independent At large candidates have properties that are currently in foreclosure.
Another one likes to borrow money from family and friends and never repay the loans. It is well known in local circles that one of the Independents have serious financial issues and some are running due to poor financial planning. I would not trust anyone with serious financial issues to represent our country because financial issues make that candidate more susceptible to corruption. If a candidate is truly serious about serving our country, they should resolve their personal financial issues first. If they cannot manage their personal finances, how can they manage the Country’s finances? We are at a critical time in our country and this election is too serious for persons whose main goal is to collect an $11,000 paycheck for the next four years.
Voter must be wise
As they say in the Third World, ‘seek ye first the political office, and through this all these things shall be added onto you.’.........so those who run for political office in the Third World make all sort of mad promises for the sole purpose of gaining political office, and once they gain political office they use this office unjustly so all these things shall be added onto them, this drives their nations deeper into the Third World. Our voter must be wise and vote in those who are genuinely running to serve our nation and uplift it.
They can’t help it
They are politicians. They can’t help themselves!
So much bribery
I’m quite sure that some of them are looking at the financial windfalls. Mike,
Floyd ETC have shown them how quickly a politician can become a millionaire on the other hand, there are those of us who elect these people expecting representation, doing the right thing for the people and the country. Only a few benefit and the country is falling apart. So much bribery!! Dishonesty. So everyone wants to run his/her own district. Let’s see how we end up.
People who strip the treasury
We can no longer afford people who strip our treasury, a bunch of disconnected independents or surly third party candidates who tear the good candidates down. Voters need to stop repeating the same mistakes. Yes, a good government deserves a reasonable salary but they must work hard. The next government must be already together on programs that will straighten out health care and its cost , reduce taxes, rebuild the TCI reputation for honest government to encourage development expanding our economy, providing employment. We need a proper immigration policy and department, a managed civil service that works and earns a respectable salary. We need roads, bridges, and seawalls planned in advance not thrown together just before election .
It’s time for a change
It is time for an organized party change, not a messy election. Most independents are jealous of how easy it was for PNP elected to rip off the country. The PNP said they want bigger, better, richer paychecks. Washington sold his Grand Turk house which he had on the market at 200,000 for 600,000 to Mike’s government. It then burned down termites and all. He took 500,000 from the pension fund. Premier Rufus had no money for the people’s needs, but had money for huge salaries and unlimited expense accounts. One Minister is seen feeding slot machines, another’s salary goes up in smoke and others parade around in their fancy vehicles.
Running for the riches
It is difficult to accuse the candidates of running to enrich themselves, like the PNP has done since 200, but we feel PDM Been is right. It would appear that some independent candidates run for the riches. Most were never active in politics or volunteer duty so why are they are running if not for the money. After 13 years of PNP we face big problems and it will take a fresh cohesive honest hard working party group not a collection of independents or third party losers. Present ministers and our Premie already rich, say they want higher salaries and benefits but they had their run.
Reminds me of Italy
Reminds one of Italy with its multiparty system. The result of this type of election usually is weak government because the vote is split so widely and ultimately - thinly.
Truly cares
The candidate I know, for example Claudine Ewing Pratt, truly cares about Blue Hills but also her has a love for children and adults with disabilities.
A dirty trap
Many people have good intentions at first, but the glitz and glam of politics lures most of them into the greedy trap and they forget all about the patriotic hogwash they spewed to gain political mileage. As the saying goes “politics is a dirty game” and clean hands tend to get messy when they wear dirty mittens.

Pastor Shirley Calcano joins PDA as at large candidate A PASTOR and a veteran educator, Shirley Clarke-Calcano has joined the ranks of the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) party as one of its at-large candidates. Calcano’s candidacy was announced at a press conference on Wednesday, September 14, at the PDA’s headquarters in Caribbean Place, Leeward Highway, Providenciales. PDA Leader Oswald Skippings made the introduction of the newest member, which brings his list of candidates to thirteen. “The spiritual importance, the gender and internal importance of this new female addition to the PDA’s already impressive slate of candidates must not go unnoticed,” Skippings said, noting that unlike other political parties, the PDA’s
PDA team
commitment and dedication to the Christian faith is enshrined in the pages of the party constitution. In line with this, the party leader
said that Mrs Clarke-Calcano’s selection is just another example of them practising what they preach and of being committed to their spiritual conviction to lead from the forefront. Clarke-Calcano in her brief address, acknowledged that the faith bestowed in her by those who selected her to help carry the PDA to victory in the next general elections, is very much appreciated. She further promised that this faith is also well founded. As stated by the candidate, she has been an active pastor for the past
eleven years and is also a twenty-five year veteran educator. “I am grateful for the opportunity that I’ve had to assist in moulding the lives of the youth of my country. I am extremely grateful and privileged to have been nominated by you the people of these islands to be a candidate, and to along with this party to help bring about change in the TCI.” She added that the PDA is united for change and is committed to seeing a new beginning here in the Islands. Skippings later announced that the party will hopefully, be soon announcing the two other candidates. He also took the opportunity to address some topical social issues, while also sending out his congratulations and support to local Olympian Delano Williams. Skippings made it known that he found the reception for Williams upon his return to the TCI to be sorely lacking from both the side of the Government and that of the Opposition. He further outlined what a PDA government would do to show its appreciation to the country’s first Olympian: “Delano we are squarely behind you and in full support and

Dominican man murdered in his Kew Town home BY DAISY HANDFIELD FELICIANO Antonio Garcia Quin, a 56-year-old Dominican, was murdered on Sunday in his Kew Town home, Providenciales, during an alleged robbery. Kevin Clarke, police press officer, said that at around 8:06 pm, a report was made to the 911 call centre concerning a man who had been shot. The lifeless body of the Garcia Quin was discovered by police officers and a medical team. Information received was that the deceased, along with another man and woman, was approached by an unknown man wearing a mask, who pointed a gun and forced them inside the house demanding cash.
A scuffle allegedly broke out between Quin and the robber, who shot him in the head and fled the scene. The Dominican man was pronounced dead by a doctor who arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. According to police, a 26-yearold man is currently being held in connection with the incident. Garcia Quin is the third Dominican to be murdered in the Turks and Caicos Islands this year. In April the body of a Dominican woman, Yuneiry Veras, was discovered in a remote area of Providenciales. And, again, in July another Dominican woman, Sonrineida Moreno Aries, was found dead in the bushes in Providenciales.
will play any role possible to ensure that your dreams and your aspirations come to full fruition in your pursuit of greatness which you have already achieved to some extent and which you so deserve.” Skipping continued that he and his PDA team deeply regret that the PNP government has not seen it fit to appreciate the athlete properly and that the PDM opposition has not seen it fit to use their parliamentary authority to challenge the government on this matter. “However, in progressive regression the PDA will remedy this national injustice done to our golden boy and first Olympian Delano Williams. That is not a promise that is a commitment that you can run with Delano.” The party leader also congratulated the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force on its recent surge in crime solving. “However we make a special plea that we see a closure to [Kevino] Bah Smith’s murder case so that his family may give him a decent burial and put their minds at rest after about two years and get the satisfaction that justice is finally being done,” Skippings added.

OTs` Attorneys general to visit TCI for four days of conference BY OLIVIA ROSE ATTORNEYS GENERAL of several Overseas Territories will convene in the Turks and Caicos Islands to discuss compliance with international legal obligations, and to exchange experience and best practices at the upcoming Overseas Territories Attorney Generals conference. The conference which will run from 18- 22 September ,will provide an opportunity for the AGs to consider key legal and constitutional issues facing the Overseas Territories, including implications for the OTs of the UK leaving the EU. According to a Government release, Governor Peter Beckingham, announced on 14 September that the UK Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, will also be attending the conference Governor Beckingham said: “I am delighted that the UK Solicitor General will be visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands this month. “Following the meeting here in July hosted by the Premier of most

REAL TALK
“Revision is not equivalent to a vision” During the last several weeks I have been listening to the political parties and several candidates try to convince voters that discussing what was done in the past or simply identifying our problems is somehow sufficient for us to go to the polls and vote for them. They are sadly mistaken because reminding voters about their accomplishments or lack thereof is not a vison for our future, rather; it is a revision of our past. Having spent the last 29 years of my life in classroom, I can guarantee you that revision time was not designed for introducing new concepts or topics. Instead, it was done in an effort to reinforce what students had already learnt and form a diagnosis for future lessons. As a teacher for ten years, once revision was completed, my next task was to go and plan a

new lesson with new objectives, new content, new methodology and new activities. In politics, this is what we call ‘a new vision’. When politicians can only talk about the past and conduct revision exercises as if we were not present during their first few lessons, without a forecast of a new vision and plan for this country; they need to go back to drawing board. Simply taking a trip down memory lane and telling us who to blame for our problems is not enough this time around. We have had enough
revision and are ready for a new vision. This classroom is different, the students are smarter and they have learned to read. They want a bright forecast for their future and will not confuse revision with a new vision. For those of you who cannot grasp this, I advise you to either come out of this classroom this election year or go back to the drawing board and bring a vision to the people because revision is over.
In addition to chairing the conference, the Solicitor General will have meetings with the Premier, the Leader of the official Opposition, the Chief Justice and members of the Bar Council. Attorney General, Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles, also welcomed the announcement of the Solicitor General’s visit to the conference, which she is organizing with the Foreign Office. She said” “It is an absolute pleasure and honor to welcome
my fellow Attorneys General and colleagues from across the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies to the Turks and Caicos Islands. “I am pleased that the Turks and Caicos Islands have the opportunity to host this year; as well as considering key legal issues facing us, the visit will be an opportunity to showcase the best of our islands”. Beckingham noted that this is great chance for TCI to showcase to an international audience its progress and world class tourism. The UK Solicitor General supports the UK Attorney General across the range of his responsibilities. Robert Buckland was appointed as Solicitor General on 15 July 2014; he was elected a Member of Parliament for South Swindon in 2010. The Solicitor General, Governor and Premier will give opening statements at the conference. The Conference of OT Attorneys General has been meeting on an annual basis for many years. Along with the annual Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) of OT Leaders with the UK Ministers it is an important forum for OT and UK representatives to discuss priority issues of mutual interest, and to exchange experience and best practice.
Man found guilty with cocaine in rectum Drug dealers are constantly looking to creative ways to hide their drugs, but this Haitian trafficker took the art to a new level when he boarded a plane from Grand Turk to Providenciales. Eddy Cerant pleaded guilty to the possession of controlled drugs, when he appeared in the Magistrates’ Court in Providenciales last Friday. He was sentenced to nine months in prison and the court has recommended deportation to Haiti after serving his time. The 44-year-old Haitian was found with 114 grams of cocaine on the flight from the capital island last Wednesday. The drug was said to be stuffed in a condom and inserted in his rectum. Kevin Clarke, police press officer, said last Friday that police were tipped off around 6:35 pm that Cerant was arriving through the Providenciales International Airport from Grand Turk with drugs.

Election manipulations? According to USA news the United States has rising concerns the coming US election might be manipulated electronically in favor of one candidate over the other. China and Russia have been accused of breaking into one parties electronic network and US government’s records. By the way, why do USA voters know when their election will be and we don’t know 60 days from when ours should be ? Is this TCI manipulation number one ? Have manipulations affected past elections in the Turks and Caicos ? The answer is obvious by any one who will admit it. During the 2012 election the Peoples Democratic Movement

a whopping 50 more votes in a recount ? Was it manipulation or does she deserve re-election after 4 long years ? Ask the PNP “low cost” housing owners. Are homes really low cost and reasonable quality ? Ask Amanda, on day one she said she deserved a raise ! Dudley Lewis now warns against treating, a soft word for bribing. Someone said “offer a reward for reporting anyone offering or accepting a bribe.” A candidate offering to buy your vote obviously knows he or she does not deserve your vote ! Elections are not about money ! Elections are about electing a competent honest government for all of the people.

Next time you find yourself aboard the Brittany Leigh Salt Cay Impressions - PART 1
All things are relative. For people living in London (population 8.6 million), a trip or relocating to a city like Brighton (population 280,000) will seem like a true escape to a much smaller, friendlier and relaxed place. Brightonians, on the other hand, BY TITUS DE BOER will look to a historical market Titus de Boer, who originally town like Lewes (population moved to the TCI from 17000) as the ultimate escape Germany in 1989, is a to a much quieter existence. No journalist by training and doubt similar comparisons can currently works as an art be made in countries around promoter and consultant in the globe. Europeans who truly Grand Turk and internationally. wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city either move to a village - or in some cases a remote island...Indeed village life is not too dissimilar to life on a small island outpost. All things are relative. When foreigners first move to the Turks and Caicos Islands, the vast majority of them end up in Providenciales, “Provo”, (population approx 25000), thinking that they have come to a very small, remote place. For although Provo now boasts a wide range of fancy restaurants, retail shops and some perfectly acceptable grocery shops and supermarkets, it isn’t New York, Toronto or Miami. And that’s exactly why (most) people move there. When I first moved to Grand Turk (approx population 6000), after 22 years in Provo, it seemed like yet again a move to a much quieter island. Less traffic, less crime and a somewhat limited choice in the food stores, when compared to Provo. Like the Provo of the early days, you have to time your food shopping in Grand Turk in accordance with the boat schedule, which is why most people head for the stores on Sunday and Monday. By the the time Saturday rolls along, it becomes quite evident that it’s high time for that boat to arrive again and the saying, “the island has run out of such and such”, is not uncommon. Still, you can get stuff all week long and as long as you know what items to source where, you’re ok - and at least will be able to feed yourself. For anyone who thinks of Grand Turk as the ultimate, sleepy outpost in the West Indies, I suggest a trip to Salt Cay. Officially called, “The island that time forgot”, Salt Cay (population 71) is a true gem of an island. While there are flights to “the Cay” from Provo and Grand Turk, my suggestion would be to take the Salt Cay ferry, the “Brittany Leigh”, which caries people and material three times a week between Salt Cay and Grand Turk. The trip on the Salt Cay ferry is truly a journey back in time and from the moment the helpful crew under the command of Capt. Allan Dickinson have helped you aboard and stored away your belongings (mostly items bought in the Grand Turk shops), you feel that your taking a sail down the West Indies memory lane. All things are relative. Salt Cay is 2.6 square miles in size (as opposed to Grand Turk’s 6.9 square miles and Provo’s 38 square miles) but whatever it may lack in physical size, the island and its inhabitants make up in attitude - positive attitude ! Not only are Salt Cay people very friendly, helpful, and welcoming but one gets the sense that they truly cherish their environment and take enormous pride in their island and its rich heritage. “Until last week, we had a population of 69”, was the sentence I was greeted with by an enthusiastic Salt Cay native,...”then someone passed away and now we’re 68 - but now that you’ve arrived, we’re back up to 71...” By stepping of the island ferry and onto a very special part of Turks and Caicos soil, we had just increased the island population by over 4 %. How often can you claim that... To be continued.

Building an animal sanctuary in the nation’s capital OVER the past few weeks many residents may have become aware of a new charitable organisation that has sprung up, seemingly out of nowhere. But like most good ideas, it sprung from the heart – that is to say, a deeply rooted love for animals, and the need to preserve one of the rustic and unique charms of Grand Turk – that of our freely roaming animals. TCI Aware Inc. is on a mission to ensure that these animals – most of which are donkeys and horses – are provided with adequate food, shelter and medical attention. The organisation - created by Michael Fenimore, a TCI Belonger born to Grand Turk stalwarts Raymond (Kit) and Tina Fenimore – is one that depends on the kindness and compassion of locals and residents alike. Fenimore has created a Go Fund Me page where he is seeking to raise some $75,000 that he will use to construct an animal sanctuary, and purchase food and medical supplies for the animals.
-“We need your help to end the suffering of our horses, donkeys and mules in the Turks and Caicos Islands NOW” – Michael Fenimore Posted on the Go Fund Me page, which can be found here https:// www.gofundme.com/2hnucec he explains his purpose: “Our solution is to focus our attention on the main problem facing our equine population; lack of food, fresh water and proper medical attention. Our organization has secured property perfectly located at North Wells, their ancestral watering hole, where with your help we intend to build the countries first unpenned animal sanctuary.” In a recent chat with this publication, Fenimore delved a bit deeper into his goal and what truly inspired him. “The animals do sustain themselves on what the island has to offer but generally it’s not enough, especially during dry season and certain times of the year. “What it does is it causes a lot of problems with locals and belongers
when the animals, driven by thirst and hunger, damage property and unfortunately because of that sometimes people lash out at them. “We also want to address some of the other bigger issues of donkeys laying on the side of the road with broken legs, not being attended to, not being euthanized, and basically being left to suffer. While these are some of the more acute situations – our effort will be an ongoing one to provide them with some relief – big or small.” Fenimore is also quite keen about keeping the animals in areas that they are already quite familiar with and where they can come and go as they please. The idea is one of an unpenned animal sanctuary. “We will construct a secured feed-storage building surrounded by several shaded feeding and drinking huts where the animals can come eat hay, drink clean fresh water and
receive medical attention for any injuries or illnesses.” He added that the facility will be manned and operated 24/7 by dedicated staff and the intention is to have all activities that are conducted on site monitored on a dedicated website via a live CCTV camera feed. According to the animal lover, what first drove him to create the organisation was a petition directed to Governor Peter Beckingham some months back, which outlined the deplorable state of animal care in Grand Turk and the seeming lack of concern or attention by the animal welfare department, headed by the country’s veterinarian Dr Mark Butler. The petition, which was created by an Arthur D in January this year, calls for the Governor’s intervention into the department, the immediate suspension of Dr Butler pending a full investigation into the department
by impartial outsiders, and for urgent steps to be taken to provide a vehicle and basic equipment to the officers working on the ground. Fenimore said that the cases of animal cruelty outlined in the petition moved him to take a stand and do something about the problem. He said he was certain that many other like-minded people would be so moved and thereby willing to help him in this initiative. So far he has raised a significant amount of money towards the cause, from several small, to medium and some sizable contributions from residents, and visitors to the islands as well as a number of business men and women on Providenciales. The success of the campaign and project is paramount to the immediate well-being of our animals and their future prosperity, Fenimore stated, while further encouraging all to get involved. That involvement, he added, can be as little as residents making a concerted effort to treat the country’s four legged creatures better.

Local registered dietician encourages a healthy lifestyle BY DAISY HANDFIELD ONE OF the main health issues associated with a poor diet is obesity, said Tamika Handfield, a registered dietician who spoke to this paper about the importance and benefits of carrying out a healthy lifestyle. She said: “Obesity is a chronic disease that exposes the body to a whole host of other chronic diseases. “Chronic diseases such as diabetes, some types of cancers, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. “These diseases, if left uncontrolled for long periods of time, can wreak havoc in the body. “They damage tiny blood vessels in the eye, in the heart and kidneys which can lead to blindness, strokes, heart attacks and kidney disease respectively.” In the interview on Thursday, Handfield said that the first step to maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is knowing what a ‘diet’ is. She said: “A person’s diet simply refers to the types of foods and
drinks he or she consumes on a regular basis. “However, most times when we speak of a diet, we are referring to cutting out certain foods, so that we can achieve weight loss. “So, a healthy and balanced diet refers to a pattern of eating that provides a variety of foods, from all five of the food groups, to ensure you get all of the necessary nutrients needed to maintain optimal growth and health. “It means that you eat fruits and vegetables of various colours, choose foods low in salt, fat, saturated and trans fats and sugar and also choose foods high in fibre.” Handfield explained that each food group provided a different set of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that the body needs, but cannot get from any other group. She said: “So, when we cut out certain foods groups, we are depriving our bodies of the necessary nutrients from that group, unless we find another way to replace it. “For example, many people say, ‘I
am on a diet so I will not eat bread, rice or any starchy foods.’ “It just so happens that those same starchy foods provide the body with the much-needed energy to perform daily activities such as walking, thinking and breathing! “Therefore, the problem is not eating starchy foods, but how much of the food you eat and the type of food you choose.” She encouraged people to switch their white bread and rice to a whole wheat type instead. The dietician explained that many people who have a fast metabolism feel as though they will not fall victims of health complications; what a misconception! “Many times these chronic diseases, mentioned above, are referred to as silent killers because you may not know for a long time what is going on inside your body. “There may be no symptoms and you may feel and look fine, but a quick check with the doctor can let you know.

“Many young people are oblivious to the consequences of poor eating habits simply because the health problems are not immediately evident, but takes a number of years develop,” Handfield said. She said that unfortunately, many young people are only interested in eating healthy and being physically active because of the pleasing aesthetics of looking good in a pair of jeans. However, what people do now will determine the quality of life
individuals will have in the long run. She said: “If the idea of being sick and on tons of medications appeals to you, then continue with your pattern of eating; if you want to be active, healthy and able to enjoy life, then I would encourage you to change the way you look at food. “It is never too late to start making changes in how you eat and how active you are. Make the choice today to make tiny steps in the right direction. It will not be easy, but it will be worth it!”
TCI Hope Foundation to host movie night to generate funds BY DAISY HANDFIELD THE TCI HOPE Foundation will be partnering with the Blue Haven Resort in Providenciales to host a movie night, with the aim of generating funds to help children diagnosed with autism in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). The movie night will be held on September 24, in Providenciales, at Salt Beach in the Blue Haven Resort at 7pm. Maxcia Rigby, director and chairman for the Hope Foundation, said in an interview on Thursday that all the funds raised from this movie night will be used for the betterment of the TCI Hope Foundation’s classroom and to provide two more scholarships for families that have autistic children, but cannot afford to send them to the special needs classroom. Rigby explained that the movie called ‘A Beautiful Mind’ was chosen because it reflects on developmental disorders. “We are grateful to Blue Haven Resort for awarding us the opportunity to host movie night and
to bring awareness to developmental disorders, not just autism. “It is a beautiful movie; not about someone with autism, but it raises awareness about someone with developmental challenges and it shows how someone can live a productive life with their disorder,” the director said. She said that she did not have a target goal in terms of funds to be raised, but looks forward to seeing a vast amount of people supporting the cause. Regular tickets are being sold for $20US and VIP tickets can be purchased for the cost of $40US; Rigby can be contacted on 332 9817 for ticket purchase and to request more information on the TCI Hope Foundation. The TCI Hope Foundation for Autism Awareness, a non-profit organisation, was founded in the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 16, 2013, to cater to autism awareness, diagnosis, and treatment. The Hope Foundation classroom currently caters to seven children. Members estimate that there are hundreds of undiagnosed cases of children with autism spectrum

The misuse of backpacks can trigger scoliosis, says local chiropractor BY DAISY HANDFIELD CANADIAN chiropractor based in the Turks and Caicos Islands spoke on backpack safety tips, so that youngsters in the Turks and Caicos could avoid spinal injuries during this new school year. Lise Cloutier, owner of Courtyard Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, explained in an interview on Thursday that backpacks should not weigh more than 10 to 15 percent of the child’s body weight. However, if it was a younger child it should be more towards the 10 percent side of the child’s body weight. Which means that if a child weighs 50 pounds, the book bag should not be more than five pounds. “The reason that this is so vitally important is because obviously the backpack is being carried on their
spines on their back. “At that age the spine, the body is growing and developing very quickly and our spine is what I like to call our lifeline. “It protects our information highway, it protects the spinal cord, which is an extension of the brain carrying the brain’s vital information to every cell, organ, and tissue in the body. “It’s the master regulator of the body, it’s the master healer of the body and at the end of the day you live your life through your nervous system. “Everything that happens mentally, physically and chemically is impacted by the spine and the nervous system,” the chiropractor said. Another issue Cloutier pointed out was that many children carried their backpacks inappropriately by only
using one shoulder instead of two. She explained that in a young developing spine it would cause sideways lateral curvature, known as scoliosis. She said: “The earlier that we can check a child and correct this alignment before it becomes a huge permanent problem, the better that is in terms of their long term development and their overall health as they become adults.” For an adjustment, or for more information Cloutier can be contacted on 339 1000. Her office is currently located in La Vista Azul, Turtle Cove, in Providenciales. Chiropractic is the largest drugless, nonmedical healing profession in the world. There are approximately 65,000 chiropractors in the United States alone, and another 13,000 worldwide.

TCI youths experience first-hand basketball training from NBA pros BY DAISY HANDFIELD APPROXIMATELY 60 youngsters from across the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) participated in the second annual ‘Digicel NBA Jumpstart’ basketball clinic last weekend. This is a six-week initiative among nine Digicel based countries in the Caribbean and also, a collaborative effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and telecommunications company, Digicel. The aspiring basketball players all flooded the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex, in Providenciales, on Friday and Saturday, to be drilled by NBA veterans. Damian Wilson, marketing communication executive for Digicel TCI, explained in an interview on Thursday that this initiative was a five-year joint agreement between the NBA and Digicel. He said that youngsters in these Caribbean countries, including the TCI, are afforded the opportunity to develop skills and show off their talent in front of professionals, in the hopes of obtaining an athletic scholarship.
“The main reason why this will be beneficial in particular for the youth is because it helps young people to see that there is an avenue for them to make it into professional sports and it motivates them to want to do more. “When are our children going to get an opportunity like this? To display their skills in the front of an NBA coach. “I mean, children in America do not get that opportunity, so we want to encourage children to embrace it,” the marketing communication executive said. After this camp, the top seven players from each of the nine countries will attend an elite camp, hosted in Tortola, the British Virgin Islands, on October 7 to 9. At the camp the top 13 players will be selected; 8 boys and 5 girls, to move on to the next stage in New York City. There these players will train at an NBA facility, watch games, tour the office and of course, meet NBA legends. Wilson added that next year the telecommunications company was looking to expanding, by accepting more children.

He said: “I know we try to focus a lot on academics, which are important, but athletics can pay for your academics. “There are a lot of children going to school today, who do not intend to become athletes, but are using athletic scholarships to pay for their
academics.” The sports enthusiast is encouraging parents to encourage their children to take up an activity, not just for athletic reasons, but for basic health and well-being. Unfortunately, no more applications are being accepted for
this year’s camp, but Wilson said that he will keep the public informed on next year’s camp. Among countries involved in the basketball camp are: Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Turks and Caicos, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, BVI

The pain drain Back pain, neck pain and headaches: these three common pain conditions affect millions of people every day, draining our energy and ability to function at normal levels. Sometimes pain may be the result of chronic underlying medical conditions, and requires a health professional’s care. But in many cases, you can help manage energydraining pain by taking a few simple steps in your daily life. POWERFUL POSTURE If you could do just one thing to reduce the aches you may experience daily, it would be to improve your posture both when standing and seated. Strengthening your core muscles will help support your spine and minimize the physical stresses and strains that create back, neck and shoulder pain. SOOTHING SLEEP Many of us get less than seven hours of sleep each weeknight, but sleep provides vital rejuvenation for sore muscles and joints. If you are not getting enough restful sleep, look at two things: your mattress and your sleep position. • A good mattress supports the natural contours of the body, letting your muscles and joints fully relax.

• Sleep on your back or side. If you sleep on your side, put a pillow between your knees. If you’re on your back, place it under your knees. Better sleep positioning with the help of pillow support can ease pain by easing pressure on your spine. EXERCISE • Exercise can help ease many types of pain, from arthritis to low back pain. A pain-reduction exercise program should include both flexibility and strength training. The stronger and more flexible you are, the better your body can distribute the physical forces of movement and prevent painful imbalances. And of course, exercising regularly may help you reduce body weight, which can significantly decrease pain – particularly in the joints of your hip, knee, and ankle, and in your lower back. STRESS • Stress and pain are often closely linked. Each one can have an impact on the other, creating a vicious cycle that sets the stage for chronic pain and chronic stress. Managing stress can lead to pain relief. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, guided
imagery and meditation can teach your body to relax and decrease stress levels. • These tips may not completely eliminate pain from your life —
but try them for a few weeks, and you’ll likely feel less discomfort. Recurrent pain can affect your quality of life, but learning how to cope with it can help you manage
its harmful impact. A chiropractor can diagnose the causes of your pain and develop a treatment plan to reduce your “pain drain” and get you moving again.

Long daytime naps are ‘warning sign’ for type-2 diabetes
The findings in Nature Communications, could, in the distant future, mean women can be removed from the baby-making process, say the researchers.
Making babies without eggs may be possible, say scientists SCIENTISTS say early experiments suggest it may one day be possible to make babies without using eggs. They have succeeded in creating healthy baby mice by tricking sperm into believing they were fertilising normal eggs. The findings in Nature Communications, could, in the distant future, mean women can be removed from the baby-making process, say the researchers. For now, the work helps to explain some of the details of fertilisation. The University of Bath scientists started with an unfertilised egg in their experiments. They used chemicals to trick it into becoming a pseudo-embryo. These “fake” embryos share much in common with ordinary cells, such as skin cells, in the way they divide and control their DNA. The researchers reasoned that if injecting sperm into mouse pseudoembryos could produce healthy babies, then it might one day be possible to achieve a similar result in humans using cells that are not from eggs. In the mouse experiments, the odds of achieving a successful pregnancy was one in four. Dr Tony Perry, one of the researchers, told the BBC News website: “This is the first time that anyone has been able to show that anything other than an egg can combine with a sperm in this way to give rise to offspring. “It overturns nearly 200 years of thinking.” Those baby mice were healthy, had a normal life expectancy and had healthy pups of their own. The goal of the researchers is to understand the exact mechanisms of fertilisation because what happens when a sperm fuses with an egg is still a bit of a mystery.
For example, the egg completely strips the sperm’s DNA of all its chemical clothing and re-dresses it. That stops the sperm behaving like a sperm and makes it act like an embryo, but how the “costume change” takes place is not clear. Removing the need for an egg could have a wider impact on society. Dr Perry said: “One possibility, in the distant future, is that it might be possible that ordinary cells in the body can be combined with a sperm so that an embryo is formed.” In other words, two men could have a child, with one donating an ordinary cell and the other, sperm. Or one man could have his own child using his own cells and sperm - with that child being more like a non-identical twin than a clone. Dr Perry stressed that such scenarios were still “speculative and fanciful” at this stage. Earlier this year in China, scientists were able to make sperm from stem cells and then fertilise an egg to produce healthy mice. Dr Perry suggested that combining the two fields of research may eventually do without the need for sperm and eggs altogether. Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, from the Francis Crick Institute, commented: “I’m not surprised that the authors are excited about this. “I think it is a very interesting paper, and a technical tour de force and I am sure it will tell us something important about reprogramming at these early steps of development that are relevant to both fertilisation and single cell nuclear transfer [cloning]. “And, perhaps more broadly, about reprogramming of cell fate in other situations. “It doesn’t yet tell us how, but the paper gives a number of clear pointers.” (BBC)
NAPPING for more than an hour during the day could be a warning sign for type-2 diabetes, Japanese researchers suggest. They found the link after analysing observational studies involving more than 300,000 people. UK experts said people with long-term illnesses and undiagnosed diabetes often felt tired during the day. But they said there was no evidence that napping caused or increased the risk of diabetes. The large study, carried out by scientists at the University of Tokyo, is being presented at a meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Munich. Their research found there was a link between long daytime naps of more than 60 minutes and a 45% increased risk of type-2 diabetes, compared with no daytime napping - but there was no link with naps of less than 40 minutes. The researchers said long naps could be a result of disturbed sleep at night, potentially caused by sleep apnoea. And this sleeping disorder could increase the risk of heart attacks, stroke, cardiovascular problems and other metabolic disorders, including type-2 diabetes.
The researchers said long naps could be a result of disturbed sleep at night, potentially caused by sleep apnoea.
Sleep deprivation, caused by work or social life patterns, could also lead to increased appetite, which could increase the risk of type-2 diabetes. But it was also possible that people who were less healthy or in the early stages of diabetes were more likely to nap for longer during the day. Shorter naps, in contrast, were more likely to increase alertness and motor skills, the authors said. Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, said there was now a lot of evidence of some kind of
link between sleep disturbances and diabetes. “It’s likely that risk factors which lead to diabetes also cause napping. This could include slightly high sugar levels, meaning napping may be an early warning sign of diabetes,” he said. But proper trials were needed to determine whether sleeping patterns made a difference to “real health outcomes”. Dr Benjamin Cairns, from the cancer epidemiology unit at the University of Oxford, said the findings should be treated with caution.
Star’s dust cloud gives birth to giant planet Astronomers have discovered signs of a baby planet developing around another star. The team used an array of radio telescopes in Chile to close in on a nascent planetary system lying 176 light-years from Earth - distant to us, but nearby in astronomical terms. The forming planet is thought to be an ice giant, similar to Uranus or Neptune in our Solar System. The findings are to be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters. In the two decades since the first exoplanets were found, astronomers have discovered that planetary systems do not necessarily follow the familiar template set by the eight planets which orbit the Sun. There is great diversity in the configuration of planetary systems and in the characteristics of exoplanets themselves. There is much debate over how this diversity emerges, including over the formation of Neptune-like icy giants. Takashi Tsukagoshi at Ibaraki University, Japan, and colleagues used the Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array (Alma) in northern Chile to take a close look at the planet formation site. TW Hydrae is estimated to be about 10 million years old and is one

of the closest young stars to Earth. Thanks to its proximity and the fact that its axis of rotation points in Earth’s direction, astronomers are able to get a face-on view of the developing planetary system. The young star is surrounded by a disc made of tiny dust particles. Variations in the signal received by Alma allow researchers to estimate the size of these dust grains. Smaller, micrometre-sized dust particles dominate the most prominent gap in the disc, which has a radius of 22 astronomical units (AU - equivalent to the mean
distance from the centre of the Earth to the centre of the Sun). Gravitational interactions and friction between gas and dust has probably pushed the larger dust out of the gap, say the researchers. The team calculated the mass of the unseen planet based on the width and depth of the 22 AU gap and found that the planet is probably slightly more massive than Neptune. “Combined with the orbit size and the brightness of TW Hydrae, the planet would be an icy giant planet like Neptune,” said Dr Tsukagoshi.

Minister says all Bahamian Baha Mar creditors ‘will be taken care of’ EDUCATION Minister Jerome Fitzgerald, one of the government’s lead negotiators in the effort to remobilise construction at Baha Mar and pay creditors, objected to criticism this week that there are discrepancies between Prime Minister Perry Christie’s confident pronouncements that all Bahamian creditors will receive money owed to them and the Claims Committee’s assertion that payment is not guaranteed. On the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of its website, the Claims Committee says no creditor of Baha Mar is guaranteed payment, emphasising that its claims process will be carried out on an ex-gratia basis and is not part of a formal liquidation process where it would be subject to certain legal considerations. Outside Cabinet, Mr Fitzgerald said on Tuesday that this does not apply to Baha Mar’s Bahamian creditors. He stressed that “there’s been no language changes” between what the prime minister has said and what the Claims Committee has announced. “The creditors for Baha Mar are both Bahamian and non-Bahamian,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “We have made it clear from day one that we the Bahamas government are concerned about Bahamian creditors. The committee is taking all claims, Bahamian and non-Bahamian. Some of those will not get much; they’re non-Bahamian. There’s no guarantee. There’s nothing inconsistent at all. We’re going to take care of Bahamians.” Mr Fitzgerald also knocked down a key Free National Movement talking point - the idea that the government and the Export Import Bank of China (CEXIM) ignored an offer by Baha Mar’s original developer, Sarkis Izmirlian, to pay creditors 100 per cent of what they are owed and to fund the

remobilisation and completion of the project in favour of an agreement with less guarantees. “(Mr Izmirlian) never, never brought one red cent forward,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “Never a letter from a bank, never a guarantee, just words. The government of the Bahamas is not working on words when it comes to this matter. We are working on money where it is located, where we can specify it and where we can see it. Mr Izmirlian has never, ever done that and if he can send you something where he showed the government that he is able to come up with a couple hundred million dollars to ensure the creditors are paid and that he can finish the project, then you print it.” Regardless, Mr Fitzgerald stressed that it would be up to the EXIM Bank to decide whether it would want to do business with Mr Izmirlian in the future. However, on April 12, the same day that Mr Izmirlian, in a letter, had renewed his bid to CEXIM for Baha Mar, Mr Christie had said: “Clearly he (Mr Izmirlian) is deserving of every consideration and it’s a question of the bank being in a
position to determine what they are going to do.” In the letter to CEXIM, Mr Izmirlian had said that his team had the “best chance” of opening Baha Mar “quickly and successfully” and encouraged the bank to accept his offer. He added that the current sale process that was launched by the receivers is “fraught with obstacles and irregularities”. The April letter was a follow-up to an offer that Mr Izmirlian had made to CEXIM Bank in January. He said he is now prepared to invest the further funds necessary to open Baha Mar. Mr Christie said at the time that while he has not seen Mr Izmirlian’s offer, he can only assume that it is an attractive one. “Clearly Izmirlian comes from a family that isn’t short on money,” Mr Christie had said at the time. “... I think it’s a question of the bank making the right decision on what’s best for them and The Bahamas. What Mr. Izmirlian has advised me is that he has put in an offer or offers that will not cause the bank to lose money.”
DR questions why US annulled diplomatic visa AUTHORITIES in the Dominican Republic announced Monday that they will demand an explanation from the U.S. government for why it annulled the diplomatic and tourist visas of the Caribbean country’s electoral commission president. Commission officials said the U.S. should also share any relevant information that would explain the action taken against Roberto Rosario, who said the U.S. consul notified him of the decision late last week. The U.S. Embassy declined to
provide details, except to say that it had the right to revoke U.S. visas based on information that may come to light at any moment. It is the first time that U.S. has annuled the diplomatic visa of a high-level Dominican official. Rosario, whose diplomatic visa was to have expired next year and the tourist visa in 2024, traveled with some frequency to the U.S. because the electoral commission has several offices there to serve the Dominican community. Rosario said last year that the U.S. ambassador had previously
threatened to cancel his visa at a time when Dominicans of Haitian descent complained they could not vote because their IDs were being illegally held by government officials. As president of the electoral commission, Rosario in 2007 launched a program to withhold those IDs, saying they had been fraudulently processed to obtain Dominican nationality. The annulment of Rosario’s visas comes as Dominican senators prepare to debate whether he should be re-elected as the commission’s president. (ABCNews)
AT the customs facility in St Marc, Haiti, a search of a truck loaded with used items from Miami resulted in customs officials discovering and seizing a large quantity of weapons, ammunition and various military equipment. According to HaitiLibre, reportedly seized, among other items, were: 150 12-gauge shotguns, nine shotguns 12-gauge double-barrel, five M4 rifles, 15 pairs of handcuffs, ten pairs of boots, 50 boxes of 50 units of .38 caliber bullets, four boxes of 1,000 units 9mm bullets, ten boxes of 250 units of 12 caliber bullets, seven holsters, 50 boxes of 50 380 cartridges, two boxes of 250 bullets 12, seven 556
mm caliber chargers, one M14 charger, 12 uniforms (blue pants, black shirt), five tactical vests, one 9 mm Glock pistol BCB2761 and one charger. Faced with this disturbing discovery, Himmler Rebu, the new secretary of state for public security, went to the scene, saying that, following the seizure, an investigation will commence into the source, recipient and those complicit, both nationally and internationally. He noted that it is not for nothing that 30,000 bullets with automatic weapons were smuggled, a month before the elections in the country. (Caribbean News Now)

Jamaicans deported from the UK label government a ‘sell out’ TWO OF the 42 Jamaicans who were today deported from the United Kingdom have accused the Jamaican government of failing to do enough to protect the interest of its citizens in the UK. The 42 people were deported yesterday (Sept 7) for a range of reasons, including over stayers and even people who have lived in the UK for many years but did not regularise their immigration status. Five others reprieved after their lawyers intervened at the last minute. One of the deportees, who declined to give his name, labelled the Jamaican government as a “sellout”, reports The Jamaica Gleaner.
Another deportee, Seon Clarke, agreed and argued that Jamaicans in the UK are being targeting and mistreated. Clarke, who admitted to living in the UK illegally and to stealing ganja there, said the Jamaican government should do more to stand up for the rights of Jamaicans. Protesters gathered outside the Jamaican high commission in London on Tuesday (Sept 6) to demonstrate against Jamaica’s cooperation with a deportation flight. The small group of protesters, led by Movement for Justice, were demanding that the deportation be stopped.

Regional News Cayman Island: Woman jailed for changing date on work permit stamp A WOMAN involved in a traffic accident “dug herself a deeper hole” by changing a date in her passport, attorney Dennis Brady said in Summary Court last week. He was speaking on behalf of Dawn Ann-Marie Adams, who pleaded guilty to altering a temporary work permit stamp, working without a permit and overstaying. Her total sentence was 30 days. Senior Crown counsel Tricia Hutchinson said Adams, 41, was arrested on a traffic-related matter on Feb. 29. In March, a request was made by police to the Immigration Department to check her status on the island. It turned out she had been given until the end of April 2015 on a permit. However, her passport had been altered to show April 30, 2017. Adams admitted altering the date as a result of being taken into custody on the traffic matter. Mr. Brady described the situation as one of those classic cases of escalating problems getting out of
control. He said Adams was a person of good character who had worked here for six years without incident. She had made efforts to do the right thing, submitting her papers to her last employer and being assured that they were being processed. The alteration of the passport was an effort to appear legitimate, Mr. Brady said. In her interview, Adams had admitted, “I did it when the police stopped me the other day. I don’t know why. I just panic[ked].” He asked for the mercy of the court. He explained that Adams had come to Cayman to try to assist three teenaged children and give them a better life than she had. Since this incident, she has been living off the benevolence of people at her church because she had no earnings, Mr. Brady said. A sentence of custody would be a further burden on the state, he pointed out, although he agreed that the state does spend money in an effort to deter wrongdoing.
Bran: DNA will not form coalition with the FNM DESPITE several requests from senior Free National Movement members and “private citizens not affiliated with any political party,” Democratic National Alliance Leader Branville McCartney said his party will not be forming a coalition with the official opposition. During a press conference at his law chambers, Mr McCartney said the FNM is a “broke and sinking ship” and a union between the two groups would help the FNM but hurt the third party. “We are done with that,” Mr McCartney said. “The FNM is in the worst state that they have ever been in their political history. They seem to be losing people every day; there is still a lot of infighting. One person is saying one thing and another person is saying the next thing. The FNM seems to be very wanting, their role as an opposition party has been dismal at best. “They have lost a significant amount of support in this country and although you may have a number of persons wanting to see some type of union, going and dealing with the FNM is like changing decks on the Titanic. That would not benefit the DNA. It will benefit the FNM. When
DNA leader Branville McCartney said: “The FNM is in the worst state that they have ever been in their political history”.
the DNA first started, the FNM was the government. At the time the FNM had a leader by the name of Hubert Ingraham and they were the government. They had the public purse and they had some finances behind them. Today the FNM is the opposition, they are led by Dr Hubert Minnis, they have lost a significant amount of support, their finance committee has (reportedly) left them and people continue to leave the party every day.
“There is mass confusion within the party,” he added. “Who would benefit from any coalition? The FNM cannot get into power with the state they are in today.” In May, Mr McCartney confirmed he had been approached “several times” by senior members within the FNM, as well as sitting FNM MPs, to join the Official Opposition. He said at the time that while the DNA will never “fold up” and join a “sinking FNM,” he proposed for the two parties to “join forces and work together” to oust the Progressive Liberal Party government. However, Mr McCartney said FNM Leader Dr Hubert Minnis “is so full of himself and bad at politics” that he refused the offer unless the DNA disbands – something the DNA leader said “will never happen”. Dr Minnis in turn said that he was “open” to forming a coalition with the DNA, but said he is “turned off” by Mr McCartney’s arrogance. When asked about talks with the DNA about a coalition yesterday, Dr Minnis said he could not comment. (Tribune242)
New UN-supported water supply system inaugurated in Haiti The award recognises outstanding service and hospitality as determined by consumer reviews posted on TripAdvisor.com.
Haiti hotel wins award in first year of operation HAITI’S newest hotel, the Marriott Portau-Prince, has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2015-2016, its first year in operation. The award recognises outstanding service and hospitality as determined by consumer reviews posted on TripAdvisor.com, the world’s largest travel website with more than 200 million unique visitors per month. “The first year for any hotel is often the most challenging, particularly in the area of service delivery. To be recognised in this way by our customers is a tremendous honour and an even stronger testament to our commitment to hiring local associates,” said Marriott Port-au-Prince General Manager Ellen Wouters. “Our staff truly cares about their country and the quality of experience each and every guest enjoys here. This award is proof positive of that.”
A collaboration between Marriott International, Clinton Global Initiatives and Digicel Group, the US $45 million Marriott Port-auPrince opened in February last year, instantly earning a place among the top city hotels in the Caribbean. The 175-room property began operations with a mandate to not only create significant employment opportunities, but also to establish direct linkages with local suppliers across multiple areas of hotel operations, to help boost Haiti’s economy. Soaps and bath products, coffee, flower arrangements, seafood, fruits and produce are all sourced locally. The hotel’s art collection, curated by Philippe Dodard, a renowned Haitian artisan whose work inspired Donna Karan’s Spring 2012 collection, features the works of 22 different local artists.
AS part of its quick impact projects, the United Nations mission Haiti has inaugurated a new water supply system that is expected to provide for more than 13,800 people – more than half of whom are women – in parts of the country’s Central Department (Département du Centre), the mission said on Thursday. “We are aware that this is not enough and that there is still much to do,” the Chief of Civil Affairs of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Pierre Ubalijoro, said in a recent news release. “The task is great but the UN system will continue to support the Haitian government and the Central Department to strengthen the system of supply of drinking water,” he added. According to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), quick impact projects (QIPs) are small-scale, lowcost projects that are planned and implemented within a short timeframe. Different actors beyond peacekeeping also fund or implement QIPs with varying objectives. MINUSTAH has undertaken QIPs to support the country’s government in implementing projects to combat water-borne diseases, such as

diarrhea, typhoid fever and cholera. Built at a cost of $95,000 – 95 percent of which was funded by MINUSTAH – this latest project is centred on Nan Pwa, Madame-Cyr and nearby localities. It is expected to help ensure that need for clean water for drinking, cooking and hygiene is met even during rainy seasons, during which the usual sources of water are contaminated
by sedimentary sludge. Some 250 local residents were also provided with temporary jobs during the construction of the system. The water system, which includes some 5.5 kilometres of pipes and seven water distribution points, is also expected to alleviate the burden on the local population of having to travel long distances to fetch safe water.

Philippine’s Duterte ordered killings as mayor, witness says A FORMER Filipino militiaman testified in a televised Senate hearing on Thursday that President Rodrigo Duterte had ordered him and other members of an alleged death squad to kill hundreds of criminals, drug users and political opponents while Mr. Duterte was a city mayor. The witness, 57-year-old Edgar Matobato, is the first member of the so-called Davao Death Squad to testify openly. He described a series of gruesome murders, including one in which the victim was fed to crocodiles, that the team allegedly carried out while on the payroll of Davao City Hall. Mr. Matobato was testifying before a Senate committee led by Sen. Leila de Lima, that is conducting hearings to investigate alleged extrajudicial killings as part of Duterte’s declared war on illegal drugs. Police said 3,140 people have been killed so far, by police and others, during that campaign. Another 16,000 have been arrested. “We were tasked to kill criminals like drug dealers, rapists, [purse] snatchers. We kill those types every day,” Mr. Matobato said in Tagalog on Thursday. He said he had been recruited in 1988 to join the seven-man team initially called the Lambada Boys, and that five years later the group was expanded to include police officers and former insurgents. He didn’t say how big the group became, but said it had killed around 1,000 people, 50 of whom he killed personally. Mr. Matobato said he worked for Mr. Duterte for 24 years, receiving regular pay from city hall. Senators are summoning payroll records from Davao City to determine if Mr. Matobato was on the payroll there.
Former Filipino militiaman Edgar Matobato said: “We were tasked to kill criminals like drug dealers, rapists, [purse] snatchers. We kill those types every day.”
Mr. Duterte hasn’t commented on the Senate testimony. He has previously denied involvement with the Davao Death Squad andsaid he opposes vigilante justice. In May last year, however, on his regular television show in Davao City, Mr. Duterte said: “Am I the death squad? True. That is true.” He later said the controversial comment was meant to coax his critics to take him to court, where he could cross-examine them. Mr. Matobato also said he had participated in the 2010 abduction and murder of supporters of Mr. Duterte’s political rival Prospero Nograles. He said the victims were strangled and their bodies thrown into the sea after being slit open “so that the fish would eat them.” He said another one of their victims was hogtied, gutted and then fed to crocodiles. There is a crocodile farm in Davao. Mr. Nograles’s son, Congressman
Karlo Nograles, denied that his father’s supporters or employees had been killed for their politics. “I can only suspect that this guy is being manipulated by some people to serve their own interests,” he said of Mr. Matobato. Mr. Matobato claimed Mr. Duterte had ordered the killing of radio broadcaster Juan Pala,a critic of the then-mayor, in 2003. Mr. Duterte has previously denied any involvement in Mr. Pala’s death, though he has publicly welcomed it. During a media briefing in June, Mr. Duterte called Mr. Pala “a rotten son of a bitch” who deserved to die. Mr. Duterte’s spokesman, Martin Andanar, told reporters on Thursday that he doesn’t think President Duterte “is capable of giving those orders.” Mr. Andanar also pointed out that the Commission on Human Rights hadn’t proved the existence of the Davao Death Squad.
Ms. De Lima told reporters that Mr. Duterte enjoys presidential immunity and may not be prosecuted until he steps down in June 2022. But she said the testimony of Mr. Matobato will be submitted to proper government agencies to take appropriate action. Grounds for impeachment in the Philippines include culpable violation of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes and betrayal of public trust. One senator at Thursday’s hearing, Panfilo Lacson, called Mr. Matobato’s credibility into question. He said the witness had claimed to have presented a suspected terrorist to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force in 2002, but said that task force had been disbanded in 2001. Ms. De Lima said in a recent interview with The Wall Street
Journal that she been frustrated for years in her attempts to build a case against Mr. Duterte and the Davao Death Squad while heading the Department of Justice from 2010 to 2015. The Davao Death Squad was identified in a 2009 investigation by Human Rights Watch. “Witnesses would speak privately but would not testify,” she said, recalling that only one witness—now identified as Mr. Matobato—had ever agreed to reveal publicly Mr. Duterte’s alleged role in the Davao killings. Until they verify his testimony, senators said Mr. Matobato has no guarantee of immunity from prosecution for the crimes to which he admitted in his testimony. He has been placed under the protection of the Senate and is currently living on the Senate grounds with his partner. He said that until his appearance Thursday he had been living under the care of priests in a province north of Manila. Mr. Matobato claimed he was tortured in 2013 by police who wanted him to take the fall for the assassination of a businessman in Davao. After that incident, Mr. Matobato in 2014 entered the witness protection programme of the Department of Justice, which was then led by Ms. De Lima. But he said he decided to leave the witness protection programme when it became apparent that Mr. Duterte will become president. He feared Mr. Duterte will order him taken out of the program and killed. Mr. Duterte claimed earlier this week that the Liberal Party, to which former PresidentBenigno Aquino III and Ms. De Lima belong, is plotting to impeach him.
Brexit: No substantive talks for 12 months, Van Rompuy predicts SUBSTANTIVE Brexit talks between the UK and the rest of the EU are unlikely to start much before the end of 2017, a former European Council president says. Speaking to the BBC, Herman Van Rompuy said negotiations were unlikely until a new German government was formed after next September’s election. The talks will be tough but hopefully of mutual benefit, he said, adding the UK had to make the “first move”. He described the UK’s decision to leave the EU as a “political amputation”. Meanwhile, leaders of every EU country, apart from the UK, are gathering in the Slovakian capital Bratislava to discuss the future of the bloc. The UK voted by 51.9% to 48.1% to end its membership of the EU in a referendum on 23 June.
Prime Minister Theresa May has said that the government will not trigger Article 50 - the formal start of the process of leaving the EU before 2017. Mr Van Rompuy was president of the European Council, which defines the EU’s overall political direction and priorities, from 2009 until 2014. He told BBC Radio Four’s Today programme: “Before the German elections and before there is a new German government, I think no serious negotiations will take place. “You can always start with more technical matters, but the hardcore, the difficult topics, will be tackled after the constitution of a new German government and that will be October/November.” Mr Van Rompuy described the senior figures appointed to negotiate for the EU, who include Belgian ex-Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and French finance expert Michel
Herman Van Rompuy said Brexit had been a “political amputation of the first degree”.
Barnier, as “very very tough” but also “very pragmatic”. He denied leaders wanted to “punish” the UK for leaving, but said there was a desire not to encourage other countries to follow suit.
“Any negotiation will be a difficult negotiation, independent of the personalities. Of course we want an agreement which represents some kind of mutual benefit. “There are huge economic interests, but there are also red lines. It is very well known that freedom of movement [of EU nationals] is a red line,” he said. Mr Van Rompuy rejected suggestions that the EU should have given former Prime Minister David Cameron a better deal after he sought reform of the UK’s relationship with the EU, saying the main reason for the Brexit vote “lies in Britain”. And he said EU leaders had warned former Prime Minister David Cameron it would be a “mistake” to hold a referendum on membership. He said the UK already had a “very special status” within the EU, which was illustrated by it not being a member of the eurozone or the
Schengen Agreement. But this meant it was also “not fully a member of the hardcore where decisions are taken”. “Britain had not many friends anymore,” Mr Van Rompuy said. This had been shown during the election of Jean-Claude Juncker as President of the European Commission in 2014, when Britain was “isolated” in its opposition to him, he added. Mr Van Rompuy said despite this, European leaders still viewed Brexit as a “political amputation of the first degree”. He added: “Because Europe was for many countries still a model, a model that you can achieve peace among peoples and states that waged wars for centuries, so it was a model of co-operation and integration. “That image of a strong Europe, that is tarnished a lot after Brexit.” (BBC)

Clinton ‘healthy and fit’, says doctor
Lula and his wife Marisa Leticia are accused of failing to declare a luxury penthouse.
Brazil ex-president Lula and wife face charges in corruption scandal FEDERAL prosecutors in Brazil have asked a judge to file corruption charges against former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. They accused him of being the “boss” of a huge corruption scheme that cost the state oil company, Petrobras, an estimated $12.6bn (£9.5bn) in losses. Prosecutors had been investigating whether Lula and his wife failed to declare ownership of a luxury flat. He has denied owning the penthouse and says the case is politically motivated. A criminal conviction would bar him from running for president in 2018. Lula has called the episode a “deplorable spectacle”. He and his
wife deny any wrongdoing and say there is no proof for any of the allegations. A judge is due to rule in the next few days whether to formally charge Lula. The flat was built by a construction company implicated in the scandal at Petrobras. Several politicians and Petrobras executives have been arrested and sentenced after a two-year anticorruption investigation called Operation Car Wash. Prosecutors initially focused on money laundering, but soon came to allegations of a complex corruption scheme at Petrobras, where overpriced contracts were given in return for bribes.
HILLARY Clinton is “healthy and fit to serve” as US president, says her doctor, as her campaign released updated medical information. The statement said the Democratic presidential nominee “continues to improve” after a pneumonia diagnosis. The disclosure came as her Republican rival Donald Trump released health data of his own on a medical chat show. Clinton aides say she will return to the campaign trail on Thursday after falling ill in public at the weekend. Both candidates, among the oldest ever to run for the White House, have been under intense pressure to share more medical information. Health issues have dominated the race for November’s election since a dizzy spell forced Mrs Clinton, 68, to leave a 9/11 ceremony in New York on Sunday. Her campaign said on Wednesday that her physician found her complete physical examination was “normal” and she is in “excellent mental condition”. Dr Lisa Bardack said Mrs Clinton was “recovering well with antibiotics and rest”. The campaign said she had a chest scan on Friday that showed a “mild, non-contagious bacterial pneumonia”. Mrs Clinton - who has been recuperating at her suburban New York home - was treated with an

antibiotic called Levaquin, which she was prescribed for 10 days. “She continues to remain healthy and fit to serve as President of the United States,” concluded Dr Bardack in the letter. The physician said Mrs Clinton was up to date on all vaccines, including two given to help prevent pneumonia, Prevnar and Pneumovax. The letter did not state when she received those vaccines. Mrs Clinton’s blood pressure (of 100 over 70) and total cholesterol (189) were all within healthy levels, according to the letter. The former Secretary of State
also had a normal mammogram and breast ultrasound, said the doctor. She takes thyroid and allergy medicines and the blood thinner Coumadin, prescribed after she suffered a blood clot resulting from a 2012 concussion. The blood clot was said to have been in a vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. The complication led Mrs Clinton to spend a few days in hospital and take a month off from her job at the State Department. Mr Trump, meanwhile, has said he is planning to release details this week of a recent physical. The Republican White House nominee handed over a one-page summary of that examination while appearing on The Dr Oz Show. He told the host he is 236lb and 6ft 3in tall, which would make him clinically overweight. The syndicated television show will not be broadcast until Thursday and the campaign declined to immediately disclose the results. Mr Trump told a rally in Canton, Ohio, on Wednesday night that he doubted Mrs Clinton would have the stamina to lead one of his events. He asked the crowd: “You think Hillary would be able to stand up here for an hour and do this? I don’t think so, I don’t think so.” Mr Trump later said she was “lying in bed, getting better”. (BBC)
UK: Arrest made in racist attack on pregnant woman
Michelle Martens told police that she arranged for men to sexually assault her slain daughter.
Mum sought out men to sexually assault her slain 10-year-old daughter THE mother of a 10-year-old New Mexico girl found dead and dismembered told police she sought men online and at work to sexually assault her daughter, according to warrants obtained by the Albuquerque Journal. Michelle Martens told police that she had set up encounters with at least three men to sexually assault her daughter, the Albuquerque Journal reported. The child’s death sparked vigils and outcry across the state. Martens, 35, told investigators that one of the
men was a co-worker. Two others she met online, including Fabian Gonzales, 31. He was to be the last. Martens, Gonzales, and Jessica Kelley — a cousin of Gonzales — all face charges in connection with Victoria Martens’ death. Police found Victoria Martens’ dismembered body last month inside the apartment she shared with her mother. According to the warrants, Martens told investigators she didn’t do it for the money.
A MAN has been arrested in connection with a racially motivated attack on a pregnant woman last month in the UK, which caused her to miscarry. The 34-year-old woman was verbally abused with “racial remarks” while shopping at a supermarket in the town of Bletchley, north of London, on August 6, police said on Wednesday. The man then followed the woman out into a parking lot where he physically attacked her, kicking her in the torso and knocking her to the ground. She was later rushed to the nearby Milton Keynes General Hospital, and treated for repeated blows to the abdomen, but doctors were unable to save the baby. It was unclear how far along she was in her pregnancy. “The ... victim was pregnant and as a result of the assault she lost her baby,” police said. A 40-old-man who tried to intervene oh behalf of the woman was hit over the head with a bag of ice and a bottle. Thames Valley Police confirmed to Al Jazeera that a 37-year-old man was taken into custody on Wednesday in connection with the incident. Witnesses told UK media that
Police did not confirm the identity of the man arrested, but after the incident, they released an image of this man who was a person of interest.
the woman was “Middle Eastern in appearance” and wore a headscarf, but a police spokesman refused to comment on the victim. The attack comes shortly after the UK’s National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) confirmed a surge in xenophobic attacks across the country in the aftermath of the June 23 referendum to leave the EU,
known as Brexit. According to the NPCC, racist and xenophobic attacks increased by 58 percent in the month following the Brexit vote, and although they abated slightly in August, hate crimes were still 14 percent higher than in the same period in 2015. Harun Khan, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said that while the “spike” in the number of xenophobic attacks may be related to the Brexit vote, it is connected to a “growing undercurrent of antiMuslim sentiments” across the country. “There are lots of stories about people being attacked and abused - mainly vulnerable people, like women wearing the hijab and the elderly. They are being targeted more often,” he told Al Jazeera. Shenaz Bunlawala, head of research at the UK-based Muslim Engagement and Development advocacy group, agreed. The post-Brexit uptick can be viewed only “within the backdrop of racial and religious hate crimes rising year-on-year for the past three years”, Bunlawala told Al Jazeera. According to Bunlawala, religious hate crimes jumped by 45 percent from 2013 to 2014, and by 43 percent from 2014 to 2015.

Entertainment YouTube ordered to pay more for music by Europe
Lady Gaga is one artist who has criticised YouTube.
VIDEO sites such as YouTube will be forced to pay more to musicians and record companies under plans to reform European copyright laws. The draft directive will also require publishers and producers to tell performers or authors what profits their works have generated. The music industry has long criticised YouTube for failing to pay enough for content such as music. News publishers will also be recognised as rights holders for the first time. Under the directive, portals such as Google News would be forced to pay newspaper publishers a fee when using small extracts or snippets of news stories. Carlo Perrone, head of
the European Newspaper Publishers’ Association, said creating a copyright for news publishers in Europe was a “significant and historic step”. Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, said: “I want journalists, publishers and authors to be paid fairly for their work, whether it is made in studios or living rooms, whether it is disseminated offline or online, whether it is published via a copying machine or hyperlinked on the web.” The Commission has not detailed how it would force sites such as YouTube to pay more to artists. The plans also call for easier access to online content across all EU countries and to reform copyright rules for research and education. Andrus Ansip, vicepresident for the digital single market, said: “Our proposal will ensure that more content will be available, transforming Europe’s copyright rules in light of a new digital reality.” The proposals, which are likely to be challenged by lobbyists, must go to the European Parliament and EU states for approval - which could take years.
David Bowie’s album Blackstar was released just two days before his death in January.
Mercury Prize: Bowie tipped for posthumous win DAVID Bowie is the clear frontrunner to win this year’s Mercury Prize, with one bookmaker making him 4/7 favourite. Bowie, who died in January, will become the first person to receive the £25,000 prize posthumously if his Blackstar album is crowned the winner later. Other nominees include Laura Mvula, The 1975, Kano and Bat For Lashes. Radiohead have also been shortlisted for their album A Moon Shaped Pool, having been nominated on four previous occasions. However, the band have yet to win the award - which recognises the best British or Irish album of the
past year. Actor Michael C Hall will perform a tribute to David Bowie at Thursday’s ceremony at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London. He will sing Blackstar’s Lazarus, which opens with the lyric: “Look up here, I’m in heaven.” The star of Dexter and Six Feet Under will soon be seen in London in the lead role in Bowie’s musical also called Lazarus - which premiered shortly before his death. While the Mercury Prize tends to favour debut albums, this year’s list only features one - Channel The Spirits by London jazz trio The Comet Is Coming.
Modern Family actress tops Forbes TV rich list MODERN Family star Sofia Vergara has retained her title as the highest paid actress on US television, according to the latest Forbes magazine rich list. Forbes said Vergara’s role as Gloria in Modern Family and some lucrative product endorsements helped her earn $43m (£32.6m) in the last 12 months. It marks the fifth year the Colombian-American actress has topped the chart. Forbes also said she earned more than any of her male counterparts in the past year. The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco was the secondhighest paid actress, earning $24.5m (£18.6m). Cuoco tied with Vergara at the top of last year’s Forbes

list, when both actresses earned $28.5m (£21.6m). The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling is the biggest climber in this year’s chart. Her earnings of $15m (£11.4m) helped her to rise from eighth place in 2015 to third this year. Mariska Hargitay, who appears in Law & Order:
Special Victims Unit, and Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo rounded off the top five. This year’s highest new entry on the Forbes list was Priyanka Chopra, who appears in ABC drama Quantico. She was the eighth highest earner with $11m (£8.4m).

Entertainment Rihanna’s ‘Needed Me’ Rises to No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart Nelly reportedly owns a large sum to the IRS.
Nelly fans hope to pay his taxes – by repeatedly playing Hot In Herre on Spotify NELLY’S music provided the summer anthems and prom soundtracks of the early-aughts, perhaps most memorably with bangers like “Hot in Herre” and “Ride Wit Me,” but it looks like the artist’s songs could also be the solution to his major financial woes. Following unsubstantiated reports by TMZ that the Country Grammarrapper owes a large sum to the IRS, Spin came up with a clever way to rally behind him; writer Brian Josephs proposed that fans stream “Hot in Herre” at least a collective 287,176,547 times so that Nelly
could earn a sizable Spotify payout. According to the streaming service the payout for artists “per stream” averages between $0.006 and $0.0084, which means that if Nelly lands on the minimum end of the scale, he would need 402,880,500 streams to earn enough to significantly decrease the alleged debt. This proposition inspired the hashtag #SaveNelly, with fans sharing the lengths they were willing to go to support Cornell. If anything, this tells us that the love for Nelly is still going strong. (Time)
Rihanna earns her sixth No. 1 onBillboard’s Hot R&B/HipHop Songschart, as “Needed Me” hops 2-1 on the Sept. 24-dated list. The crowning climb follows another No. 1 for Rihanna earlier this year with “Work,” featuring Drake, which spent 11 weeks on top, first leading the Feb. 13 chart. It’s the first time that Rihanna has placed two tracks from the same album atop the chart; both are from her most recent release, Anti. The set debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart (Feb. 20) and spent four weeks at No. 1. “Needed Me” bumps Drake from his record-breaking 18-week run at No. 1 on Hot R&B/HipHop Songs with “One Dance,” featuring WizKid & Kyla. The song slides to No. 2 on the chart (which blends airplay, sales and streaming data, powered by Nielsen Music). “Needed Me” had spent the last eight weeks at No. 2 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs below “One Dance.” Rihanna takes the No. 1 slot despite an overall 2 percent decline in chart points. That said, the song is up 1 percent in streams (to 4.1 million in the week ending Sept. 8); 41 percent of its weekly clicks are from Spotify, while YouTube claims 35 percent. The song slips 11 percent in sales (to 27,000

downloads) and falls 2 percent in audience (to 80.6 million). Rihanna’s 6 No. 1s on Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs: “Take a Bow,” Aug. 30, 2008, one week at number one. “Diamonds,” Oct. 20, 2012, 14 weeks “The Monster,” (Eminem feat. Rihanna), Nov. 16, 2013, 13 weeks “FourFiveSeconds” (with Kanye West & Paul McCartney), Feb. 21, 2015, seven weeks “Work,” feat. Drake, Feb. 13, 2016, 11 weeks “Needed Me,” Sept. 24, 2016 (one week to date) In the 11 years since Rihanna first debuted on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, on June 11, 2005, with “Pon
De Replay” (which rose to No. 24), she has notched 48 total hits on the chart. She trails just two other female acts for the most appearances in that span: Nicki Minaj (71) and Beyonce (52). Also notably, “Needed Me” took 32 weeks to hit the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs summit, completing Rihanna’s longest trip to No. 1 and the thirdlongest of any leader. John Legend’s “All of Me” reached No. 1 in its 35th frame in 2014, while the longest trek belongs to R. Kelly’s “Step in the Name if Love,” which became the chart’s leader in its 43rd week in 2003. Australians petition to put Steve Irwin on currency Jesse Williams asks tough questions about inequality in education in the new series.
Famous faces head to the front lines of inequality in ‘America Divided’ A GROUP of actors step out of Hollywood and into the heart of real issues in a new Epix docuseries about inequality, “America Divided.” From executive producers Norman Lear, Shonda Rhimes and Common, the series sends eight famous faces to different corners of the country to explore some of the socioeconomic issues plaguing the nation. Among the contributors and challenges explored: Rosario Dawson takes on the Flint, Michigan water crisis. Amy Poehler looks at the challenges faced by California’s domestic workers. America Ferrera learns more about immigration issues. Zach Galifianakis heads to
his home state of North Carolina to understand the country’s growing political divide. Peter Sarsgaard interviews people at the heart of the addiction crisis. Jesse Williams asks tough questions about inequality in education. And even producers Common and Lear get into the action. “Well, as somebody who’s fairly sophisticated [and] reads a reasonable amount, I thought I understood the difficulties of housing in New York,” Lear told reporters this summer during a panel for the show at the Television Critics Association press tour. “But after spending a few days working with them...I was horrified at how little I knew.”
A PETITION calling for Australia to put the late conservationist Steve Irwin on its currency has gathered almost 20,000 signatures. Irwin, known as the Crocodile Hunter after his wildlife television show, died in 2006 when a stingray’s tail stabbed him in the heart. The petition calls on citizens to pay their respects to the “all-time greatest Australian bloke”. But it remains unclear whether the petition will have any impact. “We started this petition because the newer generation barely knows who is representing our currency,” Kyle Ryan, one of the founders of the petition told the BBC. “We believed that having a childhood icon and conservationist like Steve would be a great idea for his 10th anniversary.” Steve Irwin’s face has already appeared on Australian currency once, in a 2009 series of dollar coins commemorating Inspirational
The petition calls for fans to “go one step further” in recognising Steve Irwin’s efforts.
Australians. The chief executive of the Royal Australian Mint said the petition “highlighted the passion throughout
a sub-section of the Australian community to recognise Mr Irwin” and invited people to send in a formal proposal. (BBC)

Sports Interational WADA chief warns Russia over medical record hacking THE head of the World-Anti-Doping Agency has warned Russia that the hacking of athletes medical records could postpone the nation’s attempt to return to the world stage. WADA president Craig Reedie told CNN Thursday that the hacking of confidential files by the cyber criminal group “Fancy Bear” was clearly a retaliatory attack after 118 of Russia’s athletes were banned from competing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games following revelations of “state-sponsored” doping. WADA recommended banning all Russian athletes from the Olympics, after an independent report said the country operated a state-sponsored doping program during the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. Russian officials and athletes likened the move to Cold War era conflicts. And while Reedie remains adamant there has been no involvement from the Russian government, he says the hack could have serious consequences for the country’s bid to re-enter the world of athletics. “I would be very surprised if the Russian government was directly involved,” said Reedie. “However, the information that we have, which I’m pretty certain is authoritative, is that the people who are doing this have connections to Russia. “I would hope that the appeals I have made to my colleagues and officials in Russia will bring about some desired results because this continued breach of confidentiality on athletes’ personal records is entirely unwelcome.
Neymar joined Barcelona from Santos in 2013.
American four-time Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles was one of the athletes, who it was revealed, benefited from therapeutic exemption use (TUE). A TUE allows an athlete to use, for therapeutic purposes only, an otherwise prohibited substance or method.
“It is dangerous, it breaches every bit of medical code that I would ever know, and is unhelpful if Russia is making efforts to have its antidoping system declared compliant.” Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko denied accusations of governmental interference when he spoke to reporters in Athens, Wednesday. “How can one possibly prove that the hackers were from Russia?” Mutko said, according to state-run Tass news agency. “Nowadays, Russia is blamed for everything and it seems to be in the trend. “I want to say that we have no such information and we are also deeply concerned since the hacked documents could have also contained information on Russian athletes and
it could be made public as well.” The hack, which revealed therapeutic exemption use (TUE) details of stars such as American four-time Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles as well as tennis sisters Venus and Serena Williams, has led to criticism of WADA’s security systems. A TUE allows an athlete to use, for therapeutic purposes only, an otherwise prohibited substance or method. They’re often used because athletes may have illnesses or conditions which means they need to take certain medications. If the medication which is needed is listed as a prohibited substance, a TUE could be given to allow the athlete to use the medication without breaking any doping laws.
Neymar: La Liga seeks answers from Barcelona over transfer and tax deal NEYMAR’S 2013 transfer to Barcelona is to be investigated by La Liga. The Spanish football league body wants talks with the club about the agreement they came to with the Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office over the signing. In June, Barcelona paid a €5.5m (£4.3m) fine over the 24-year-old’s move from Santos. The La Liga club were accused of tax fraud, which they denied. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu had blamed the dispute on “a mistake... in tax planning”. Barcelona said it paid €57m (£43m) for the forward, with the player’s parents receiving €40m and Santos €17m. But investigators said the fee was closer to €83m and that Barcelona had concealed part of the deal. The club denied the claim. Spain’s La Liga has announced an
investigation into the circumstances surrounding Brazil star Neymar’s 2013 transfer from Santos to Barcelona. Bartomeu added at the time: “It was better to accept this agreement than continue on with the uncertainty that has dragged on for a long time over the Neymar case.” A La Liga statement on Thursday read: “Following widespread media reports, La Liga confirms an informative hearing will be launched with FC Barcelona in relation to the agreement reached between the club’s board and the Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Neymar legal case.” Neymar signed a new five-year contract with Barcelona in July. Four 1500m runners finish faster than Rio Olympics gold medal winning time A DISABLED middle-distance runner shattered the 1500m Paralympic world record after winning gold at the Rio Paralympic Games, beating Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz by more than 1.7 seconds. Abdellatif Baka of Algeria won the T13 1500m final on Monday night in a stunning performance that not only set a new Paralympic world record, but stands as the fastest 1500m time recorded by an able-bodied or disabled athlete in Rio over both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Baka clinched gold in the T13 class where athletes suffer from visual impairment. There are two other classes for visually impaired athletes in the form of T11 and T12, with the lower numbers indicating a more severe impairment. Baka crossed the line in a time of three minutes and 48.29 seconds to win gold, with American Olympic champion Centrowicz only managing three minutes and 50.00 seconds at the Olympic Games last month. The feat was made all the more stunning given the fact that the
second, third and fourth-placed finishers all recorded times faster than Centrowicz, meaning that four Paralympic athletes had run times fast enough to win gold had they competed in the Olympic Games. Ethiopia’s Tamiru Demisse claimed silver with a time of three minutes and 48.49 seconds, with Kenya’s Henry Kirwa taking bronze in three minutes and 49.59 seconds. Incredibly, Baka’s brother, Fouad Baka, finished fourth in a time of three minutes and 49.84 seconds to also finish faster than Centrowicz. (Independent.co.uk)

Sports Interational Messi nets treble in Barcelona’s biggest Champions League win
Stan Wawrinka celebrates with the US Open trophy after beating Novak Djokovic.
LIONEL Messi set the tone for another Champions League campaign when scoring a hat-trick in Barcelona’s 7-0 destruction of Celtic, so throwing down the gauntlet to great rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. As Barca racked up its largest win in the competition, the Argentine registered a record sixth Champions League hat-trick -- one more than Ronaldo. However, the Portuguese’s 93 Champions League goals are unsurpassed, even if Messi narrowed the gap by taking his tally to 86. Messi needed just three minutes to rifle the opener at the Nou Camp, and he doubled the lead in Tuesday’s opening Group C encounter just moments after Moussa Dembele’s spot-kick was saved by home keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Neymar, who provided four assists, soon curled home a fine freekick, Andres Iniesta lashed home a stunning volley before Messi added a fifth as Barcelona rebounded from Saturday’s shock defeat to Alaves in blistering fashion.

The five-time world footballer of the year also hit a post, just seconds before setting up Luis Suarez -whose first goal was another fine volley -- to tap home his second. The defeat for Celtic, which won the competition in 1967, was the Scottish side’s heaviest European loss. Yet Barcelona could be punished
by European football governing body UEFA after fans displayed thousands of pro-Catalan independence flags prior to kickoff. Barca was fined $170,00 for the same offense -- such political statements are banned -- during last season’s competition, with a portion of the fine suspended for two years. (CNN)
Wawrinka says mental Iran’s sitting volleyball ace is strength helped him tallest Paralympian in history win US Open With his index finger pointing to his temple, it was a gesture that came to define the 2016 US Open. Once considered too mentally fragile to win on the biggest stage, Stan Wawrinka believes his psychological toughness helped him clinch his first US Open title and third grand slam crown at an engrossed Flushing Meadows on Sunday. So long in the shadow of his fellow Swiss and 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer, Wawrinka made the gesture several times during his 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 victory over defending champion Novak Djokovic. “It started in the Australian Open when I beat Novak (in the quarters) for the first time,” Wawrinka said about the gesture during an interview with CNN’s James Blake at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. “It just came like that. I never try to think what I am going to do. You can see after the match, when I don’t do anything, because I am completely empty and dead and all the emotions coming.” It was in January 2014 that
Wawrinka beat Djokovic to reach the Australian Open semifinals. “This for me is really when I started to be tough with myself,” said Wawrinka, who also overpowered Djokovic in the finals of Roland Garros last year. “I know if I want to have a chance to beat the top players, I need to be mentally ready for that.” The third-seeded Swiss showed his mental strength several times across the last fortnight. Down match point in the fourthset tie-break against Briton Dan Evans in the third round, Wawrinka slammed down a big serve and won the point with a crisp volley. He ended up winning in five sets. “I won that match and little by little, I started to play better each match,” Wawrinka said. “Saving match point, you have be a little bit lucky,” said the Swiss after adding the US Open to his 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open titles. “But I was happy with what I was doing, I was fighting, staying positive, trying to find a way.” (CNN)
SITTING on the floor, Morteza Mehrzadselakjani’s raised arms stretch well over six feet. Standing up, the Iranian Paralympian measures eight feet one inch, making him the tallest athlete in the history of the Paralympics and the joint second tallest man in the world. At eight feet two inches, only Turkey’s Sultan Kosen is taller. While his height has caused Mehrzadselakjani -- known better as Mehrzad -- anguish and suffering his entire life, on the sitting volleyball court it has made him a star. When he was substituted on in the third set of Wednesday’s group B match against Ukraine, the crowd at the Riocentro Pavilion exploded. Playing as the setter, Mehrzad served and spiked the team through to match point, when he smashed an ace that sealed Iran’s victory in straight sets 22-25 26-28 20-25. His addition to the team this year, already ranked no. 1 in the world, has strengthened Iran’s bid for gold -- the Iranians have won five gold and two silver medals in the sport’s seven Paralympic appearances. But Mehrzad’s competitive advantage has come at a hefty cost. He suffers from

acromegaly, a rare condition caused by excess growth hormone. At the age of 16, he already measured over six feet two inches. A year earlier, a serious pelvis fracture from a bicycle accident stopped his right leg from growing -- it’s now six inches shorter than the left, making it difficult to walk. Mehrzad normally uses a wheelchair or crutches to get around. A recent study has shown that
due to increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular issues, people with acromegaly are likely to suffer an earlier death. Before finding sitting volleyball five years ago, Mehrzad’s life was very different. “I was alone, I was depressed,” he told Iranian TV about his life growing up. “But my life has changed from playing sitting volleyball and being a Paralympian.”

Man Utd lose Europa League opener at Feyenoord MANCHESTER United produced a lacklustre display as their Europa League campaign began in defeat at Feyenoord. Jose Mourinho made eight changes from the team beaten by Manchester City and an Anthony Martial shot going wide was their only first-half chance. Zlatan Ibrahimovic came on for the visitors and headed wide as he failed to turn around his side’s fortunes. Instead, Nicolai Jorgensen, who was offside, crossed for Tonny Vilhena to drive in Feyenoord’s late winner. Ibrahimovic went close to an equaliser with a drilled free-kick but it was saved at the second attempt by former Liverpool keeper Brad Jones. The defeat means United have lost four successive European away games in a row for the first time. Paul Pogba, who re-joined United in a world-record £89m move from Juventus in August, had his lack of discipline and positioning heavily criticised by ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher following Saturday’s derby defeat by City. If playing alongside Ander Herrera and Morgan Schniederlin in midfield against Feyenoord was supposed to allow him freedom to display his attacking skills, Pogba failed to take the opportunity to do so. The France international was a peripheral figure in the first half as he epitomised a lack of urgency and intensity from the visitors. Pogba pushed further up the

pitch after the break and, despite looking a little more threatening as he attempted two long-range shots which went comfortably off target, he could not find the quality to help find a way through the Dutch side’s defence. England forward Wayne Rooney has played behind United’s main striker so far this season but was rested for this trip. United boss Jose Mourinho claimed he had other “solutions” for the role but the poor performance of his supporting cast of players can have done little to persuade him of the strength of his other options. The midfield trio of Herrera, Schneiderlin and Pogba, along with wingers Anthony Martial and Juan Mata, left Marcus Rashford too isolated. Rashford, who burst on to the
scene with two goals in a 5-1 Europa League win over FC Midtjylland on his Manchester United debut in February, struggled as he made his first start of the campaign. He was replaced by Ibrahimovic, who was part of a triple substitution after 63 minutes which also introduced Memphis Depay and Ashley Young, and the Swede gave the attack more of a threat but United still did not look like scoring. Asked if the players who came in failed to take their chance, Mourinho said: “I don’t want to go in that direction. I don’t want to personalise. Obviously, some played better than others. It was the first game for some.” On his selection for this coming Sunday’s Premier League trip to Watford, the manager added: “We go back to a normal team without so many changes.” (BBC)
Angelique Kerber (right) is the first German to win the US Open since Steffi Graf in 1996.
US Open 2016: Kerber beats Pliskova in final GERMANY’S Angelique Kerber backed up her status as the new world number one with a thrilling win over Czech Karolina Pliskova in the US Open final. Kerber, 28, won 6-3 4-6 6-4 in New York to add the US Open to her victory at the Australian Open in January. Pliskova’s semi-final win over Serena Williams had already ensured the German will top the new rankings on Monday. “All my dreams came true today and I’m just trying to enjoy the moment,” said Kerber. “It’s incredible. I’m standing here with a second Grand Slam trophy
and it means so much to me.” Kerber was appearing in her third Grand Slam final of 2016, and the German played with the authority of a world number one in waiting. Pliskova, 24, went into the final with a WTA Tour-leading 447 aces this year and on an 11-match winning streak that included victory over Kerber in last month’s Cincinnati final. The Czech had never been past the third round of a major before this tournament and made 17 unforced errors in the first set, but fought back with 17 winners in the second before powering 3-1 ahead in the decider. O’Neal on Simmons: ‘He’s a LeBron-type Player’ SHAQUILLE O’Neal was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as one of the best to have ever played the game. He has solidified his place in basketball history, and now he is eyeing the next generation of potential stars in the incoming rookie class. “I don’t know all of them, but I know my guy’s going to be pretty good, Ben Simmons,” O’Neal said last week in Springfield, Mass. O’Neal said he has paid attention to only the top two picks, Simmons and Brandon Ingram. He got to know Simmons’ game before he was drafted by the Sixers when Simmons attended his alma mater, LSU. O’Neal recognised Simmons’ multidimensional skillset, from
scoring to ball handling to rebounding, which sets him apart as a 6-foot-10 point-forward. Even though Simmons played just one season in college, that was enough time for O’Neal to draw comparisons between him and one of the most talented in the NBA. “He’s a LeBron-type player,” O’Neal said. “What I mean by that, LeBron does a nice job of making everybody else around him better — passing the ball, doing the small things — and Ben is that type of player.” O’Neal and Simmons had different college careers en route to becoming number one picks. Over three years, O’Neal averaged 21.6 points and 13.5 rebounds,
won numerous personal accolades and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament each season. Simmons came to LSU with high expectations. But in spite of his 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists, the team underperformed and missed the tournament. He also was not eligible for the Wooden Award. O’Neal defended Simmons’ collegiate performance and expects improvements from the 20-year-old in the NBA. “He took a lot of flack, especially at LSU with not really taking over games,” O’Neal said. “But he’s young. He’ll get to that.” Simmons will be a centrepiece of the Sixers system this season. He brings intangibles, versatility and a

All-rounder Jesse Alexander was also named Player-of-the-Tournament.
Beaches won the Summer T20 cricket title by six wickets.
Alexander fires Beaches to cricket title JESSE Alexander clobbered two fours in the last over to ink his dominance in the final of the HAB Group sponsored TCICA Summer T20 cricket competition last Sunday at the Downtown Ball Park. The Beaches’ all-rounder was on fire with both bat and ball, and his exploits in the last over sealed the win and the awards. Along with the man-of-the-match trophy, the Jamaican cricketer also won the Player of the Tournament award with 202 runs and 18 wickets. The championship clash between
Beaches and Quality Super Kings was always going to be a grudge match. Both teams had won one game each in the preliminary round so the trophy could have gone to either side. Winning the toss Quality looked to lead with their top order batsmen— the strength of the team. From ball one it looked good, especially since they changed up the line-up to include the current and previous national T20 record holders Garvin Bruno and Nuwan Bodhinayake at the top.
Olympian Williams meets Golden Girl Capron TCI’s Golden Boy Delano Williams was able to reach one of the women who set the tone in TCI athletics. Corina Capron had already made her mark, long before the 22 year-old was born. In fact it was 38 years ago that she won TCI’s first gold medal in the 100M at the Florida Relays. That was also history for the Turks and Caicos as they made their debut on the World stage, having received membership to
the IAAF in 1977. Rita Gardiner attended as assistant coach, while the late Joshua Gardiner “Josh for Sports” had travelled as head coach. On Saturday as fate would have it, TCI’s first Olympian, Williams was walking with Mrs. Gardiner after running with the torch at the Caribbean Wellness launch at the Downtown Ball Park when they ran into Capron. The rest became history.

Bruno looked in form after belting Danar Lewis for a straight six off the first ball. Another maximum was recorded a few balls after and the Super Kings settled in, but Alexander had other plans and in the second over he had one of the better batmen in the TCI clean bowled. The end of Bruno (12) brought the technically correct Odayne Ewart to the crease. He and the aggressive Bodhinayake (who had one of his better games this season) were able to add 81 runs for the second wicket.
When Bodhinayake fell, caught by Lewis at long on off the bowling of Damian Young— the batting followed. Errion Charles, who has had a rather consistent competition, could only add five to the score. Attempting a big one, Ewart (42 runs, 48 balls, six fours and a six) became Alexander’s second victim. In the same over the opening pacer (in his second spell) had Ira Baptiste (14) bowled. In total Alexander finished with 4-23 from his four overs. Beaches then needed169 for
victory at almost 8.5 runs per over. Opener Sidue Hunter fell for 1 in the second over to Ian Heath, while Kareem Jack and Alexander batting themselves in. Jack scored 37 from 34 balls (6X4s) before he fell, caught behind to Bruno. And although Richard Rowe (24 (3X4s, 1X6) scored at almost a run a ball and the eventual man-of-the-match picked up the pace, Beaches were still behind and looked in trouble. In the end, it was however the Alexander show as he scored 27 runs from his last nine balls to secure a win.
