Police established a crime scene upon discovering Howell’s lifeless body in bushes close to his home

Howell’s death deemed suspicious BY DAISY HANDFIELD THE LIFELESS body of Conrad Howell was discovered in bushes in Blue Mountain, Providenciales, on Saturday (September 12) during a nationwide search by the police and scores of community members. Howell was reported missing by relatives on Friday, September 11, and was last seen on Thursday, September 10. Howell’s wife, Brikell Howell said that she awoke at about 2am that Friday morning and discovered that

her husband was not at home. She took to social media saying that this was out of character for husband not to be in contact with his family, who had not seen him since that Thursday night. In a Facebook post, Howell shared: “He was wearing a black pants, white singlet and socks…” It is alleged that members of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) had conducted a search the evening that Howell was reported missing, but were unsuccessful in uncovering any clues

that could lead them to the pastor. However, the body was only discovered after a second search was organised by community members in conjunction with the RTCIPF. He was found in bushes near to his home in Blue Mountain by a dog named Cocoa. Present during the search, Premier Ewing expressed his condolences to the family and assured the general public that he would play an active role in getting the heinous crime solved. During a police press conference on Monday (September 14) at the police headquarters in Providenciales, Acting Commissioner of Police Rodney Adams said that until the autopsy is conducted, police were not classifying Howell’s death as a murder. He said: “I would also wish to say to the public and make it clear that at this time we have not and I repeat, we have not classified this matter as a murder, as being speculated within the communities of the TCI. “It remains a suspicious death investigation.” The autopsy was conducted on Wednesday (September 16) by a pathologist who was flown in for the job. There has still not been any revelations by police on the results. Adams began the press conference by offering his sincere condolences to the family of the late Howell, on behalf of himself, the RTCIPF and his family. He ensured the public that police are working on solving this case, and clarified details. “There has been a lot of misinformation, some of you have already formed your opinion about

what has happened. “However, we are committed to clear up the misinformation. We will be as transparent as possible. “At this time we cannot release too much information as this is an active investigation and we would not want to compromise it by releasing information prematurely.” Adams said that police were aware that the entire Turks and Caicos Islands was mourning as he spoke. However, he encouraged the public to take confidence knowing that the Lord is close to the broken hearted and serving those who were crushed in spirit. He said that he along with his team would move as timely as possible to determine exactly how and why Howell’s death occurred. “I ask that we as a country allow

the investigation to run its full course. We will without prejudice seek the truth and uncover the facts. “We are conscious of the fact that our beautiful by nature Turks and Caicos Islands are on edge and we are committed to restore calm and peace to these beautiful by nature Turks and Caicos Islands. “We have a tedious task ahead. We have some long days ahead, however, we are prepared to follow the evidence and go just where it leads us.” Rev Howell was a pastor, preacher and a television and radio show host. He sat on several significant Government boards and was the son of school namesake, the late Clement Howell. Howell was arguably most known as the author of the country’s national song: ‘This land of ours.’

Bight Park will close at 7pm daily

TIME restrictions have now been placed on the use of the Bight Park by the Department Of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA). The move is to ensure safer access to Bight Park, a Government release stated. The public is hereby advised that the park will now only be accessible between 5am and 7pm, seven days per week. Exceptions will however be made on Thursday evenings to facilitate the Island Fish Fry event.

People are being urged to cease all activities at the location by 7pm and all vehicles must vacate the premises. Anyone who fails to adhere to these new time restrictions will face the risk of having their vehicles locked inside the park until it is reopened the following day, DEMA advised. Applications for the use of the park are available from Sheryl Williams, at the National Environmental Centre, DEMA, Lower Bight Road, Providenciales.

‘We will get to it, when we get to it’ – Gov’t on Freedom of Information Bill AN OPPOSITION-led Freedom of Information motion was passed in the House of Assembly on Monday (September 14), with no support from the Government benches. The motion sparked heated debate at times, with Minister of Border Control and Labour, DonHue Gardiner pointing out to the Leader of the Opposition, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, who presented the motion, that the PDM does not direct the Government’s agenda. The contention, which was stated by the Opposition leader and later denied by the Government, was that the introduction of the bill was a promise made on the campaign trail in 2012 and one not kept to date. Gardiner along with Premier Rufus Ewing denied this allegation and both stated that the Government “will get to it, when they get to it”. While the Government has not refused to introduce the bill to the House for the enactment as law later on, they contend that there are mechanisms to be put in place for the smooth introduction and effective use of such a bill, and that they are not there as yet. This point was supported by the Governor’s appointed member, John Phillips who agreed that proper human and other resources need to be in place before the introduction of such a law. However, the other Governor’s appointed member, Lillian Missick scolded the Government benches for the comments made about the motion, stating that the introduction of such a law is a constitutional requirement. In July, the motion was first introduced in the House, although it was not debated then. At the time Cartwright Robinson had told the Weekly News about her intentions with taking the motion to the House. “Both political parties campaigned on it; we campaigned on it because it is so important in the country we are in to be as transparent as possible.

“We are even more annoyed it has not been done – I know the media cries out about the situation – but we are in the same boat. “I think that as a courtesy, certain information beyond what they [the Government] decide to put out ought to be public information.” She stated that one of the things that inspired the motion – aside from the fact that the PDM gets no information from Government – is that the public cannot get any information at all on the numbers of PRC holders or how many have been issued since the PNP took office. She said: “A PRC holder with the right to work is a permanent resident and they can’t come back and tell people that they are not allowed to give that information. “You want to tell me that they don’t know how many people are legally allowed to hold PRCs in your country; that it is private? “I think if you don’t force this Government to give information that they can give, you will always be in the dark.” She added that this is one of her greatest problems with the Government - accountability and transparency - them only giving the bare necessities, when there is nothing wrong with going a little deeper. “And what it has done in this climate is to spark unnecessary rumours; I know the struggle that people have even with the police.” The party leader noted that even with a Freedom of Information Ordinance, there will be mechanisms to protect sensitive things because of national security risks, and this they fully support, but basic information ought to be accessible to the public. “Any government should want that transparency and accountability,” she added. In her motion to the House, Cartwright Robinson outlined that the introduction of a Freedom of Information Ordinance is provided for in the Constitution Order of 2011.

Premier Rufus Ewing

Leader of the Opposition, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson

This states as follows: “Freedom of information - Subject to this Constitution, an ordinance shall provide for a right of access to information held by public authorities, for the conditions for the exercise of that right, and for restrictions and exceptions to that

right in the interests of international relations, the security of the Islands or the United Kingdom, public safety, public order, public morality or the rights or interests of individuals.” Back in 2012, while still on the campaign trail, the now Minister of Finance, Washington Misick told

this publication that the Freedom of Information Ordinance will be a priority of a PNP administration. At that time he said: “One of the things we have to do is find out what legislations have been drafted and prioritise them. “We can only move as fast as the legal resources allow us, but definitely the Freedom of Information Ordinance is important. “I cannot say it will happen in the first 100 days, because we have a large number of important legislations, such as socially related legislations that we have to address, but it is something we must deal with.” Premier Rufus Ewing, also in an invited comment to this publication at the time, had stated that there will be continuous collaborations with Turks and Caicos Islanders so they are involved in the process and will be able judge the party’s administration of the nation’s affairs. He promised that the public will know what they are doing “every step of the way”.

TCI’s London Office officially opens its doors THE TURKS and Caicos Islands Government, this September, officially began operations of its London Office, joining the presence of the other overseas territories of Anguilla, BVI, Cayman and Bermuda. The London Office, an extension of the Office of the Premier under the directorship of Althea Been, is being headed by Tracy Knight and Kimo Tynes, a Government press release read. The office will be the primary interface between the Government and European bodies such as United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA) and Overseas Countries and Territories Association (OCTA). Among its main responsibilities, the London Office will promote inward investment and identify and access funding from UK and

European donor agencies. The London Office will also be the source for first-hand information for the diaspora living in the UK and Europe. A key feature of the office, which is located at 83 Baker Street, is the new consular services which will offer assistance to visiting Government officials and help people intending to visit the country from Europe with VISA and immigration processes. The consular office will also be organising an official Turks and Caicos Islands Association for the students and residents living abroad as a support and information mechanism for the promotion of unity. Students and residents will be invited to register with the London Office to assist with the formulation of a database of people, addresses

and contact information. Premier Rufus Ewing, during his first annual Turks and Caicos Islands reception at the Dorchester in London last December, had announced Government’s plans to open a London Office that would offer services beyond the traditional tourism and marketing initiatives to include the promotion of foreign direct investment and consular support services. The official mailing address and contact number for the TCIG London Office is as follows: Turks and Caicos Government, London Office, 83 Baker Street, London, W1U 6AG, 020-70347845. In coming weeks the London Office will be launching an official website for real time updates, promotions, news and bulletins.

Suicide is no secret –Part one

This two part series of articles was submitted by Dr Patrick Prince, PhD, clinical psychologist, Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence.

AS THE Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence took charge in the observance of World Suicide Prevention Day last September 10, under the theme ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives,’ there are a few things we need to keep in the forefront of our minds. First of all, suicide is not a secret, and anyone experiencing suicidal ideation/thoughts of killing or harming self, SHOULD seek help, and today! Most persons who committed suicide didn’t want to die, and those who attempted suicide wished they didn’t. They just wanted to rid themselves of the emotional agony, pain, and suffering they have been experiencing. They had reached a point, when such emotional anguish became so overbearing, it overwhelmed them. To most, the only way out was to take themselves out of the equation – they believed that they have caused enough problems or have been a burden to their families and loved ones, and they believed the only way out was ‘to take themselves out’ literally. To most observers looking at the person who attempted or committed suicide to be selfish or a sin. But, this is not usually the case. Suicide is a side effect or symptom of many underlying medical conditions, which do not respect your creed, ethnicity, nationally, or socio-economic status. If you are human, then you are susceptible. The following will highlight or discuss suicide attempts, completion, and behaviours including the facts, definition, effects, possible causes, risk/protective factors, signs/ symptoms, assessment, coping, and getting help. Facts about Suicide Attempts and Completions The World Health Organisation (WHO), National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Mental Health, and other international, researched-based agencies and organisations have reported that: -Well over ¾ of million people die annually by suicide worldwide. -Three out of four persons, who commit suicide, had a physical illness. -Nine out of 10 persons, who commit suicide, have a diagnosable mental-health problem.

-Although firearms are the most common way people complete suicide worldwide, trying to overdose on pills is the most common means by which people attempt to kill themselves. -In the United States, 10 to 14-year-old boys commit suicide twice as often as their female peers; 15 to 19-year-old male teenagers commit suicide five times as often as their female teenage peers; and 20 to 24-year-old men commit suicide 10 times as often as their women peers. -In the United States, homosexual and other sexual minority youth are more at risk for thinking about and attempting suicide than heterosexual teen peers. -There is a higher frequency of completed suicides in males than females across the life span. -Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people 15 to 29 years of age. -Many people, who complete suicide do not tell any health professional of their intent in the months before they do so. If they communicate a plan to anyone, it is more likely to be a close friend or close family member – and, it’s not always a clear-cut message. -Men are more likely to choose violent methods, such as shooting themselves – as a result, suicide attempts by men are more likely to result in death. -Most common means of suicide by method worldwide are firearms, overdose of medication, selfhanging, and self-suffocation. -Most suicide attempts do not result in death – these attempts are often a cry for help. -People, who attempt suicide often mistakenly believe that they are doing their family and friends a favour by taking themselves out of the world. -People, who commit violence against others and self-mutilation (eg, slitting one’s wrists and other body parts, or burning oneself are more likely to attempt and commit suicide). -Self-mutilation is the act of deliberately hurting oneself without meaning to cause one's own death, even though it could lead to death. -Some people attempt suicide in a way that is less likely to be fatal, such as poisoning or overdose. -Suicide, among children and teens, are usually associated with bullying and being bullied. -There are gender, age, ethnic, and geographical risk factors for suicide, as well as those based on family history, life stresses, and medical and mental-health status. What is suicide and suicidal behaviour?

According to the US National Library of Medicine: ‘Suicide is the act of taking one's own life on

purpose’ and ‘Suicidal behaviour is any action that could cause a person to die, such as taking a drug overdose or crashing a car on purpose.’ What are the effects of suicide? Although suicide or suicidal behaviour is a ‘self-centred’ act, its aftershock impacts the community as a whole. Its effects on loved ones, family, and friends are often emotionally devastating. A person or suicide survivor, who loses a loved one to suicide, usually becomes preoccupied with the reason for the suicide. The survivor usually wants to deny or hide the cause of that loved one’s death, and wonders if s/he could have prevented it. The survivor usually blames self for the problems that led to the suicide, and s/he feels rejected by their loved one, and stigmatised by friends and acquaintances. The suicide survivor may experience a myriad of emotional conflicts about the deceased, from intense emotional pain and sadness about the loss of life, feeling helpless to prevent it, longing for the person s/he lost, and anger at the deceased for taking his/her own life – even if it were to relieve the years of physical or mental suffering and pain. The suicide survivors, the family members left behind by the loss of a loved one tend to experience complicated grief in reaction to that loss. This is usually the case, since the person they are grieving is at the same time the victim and the perpetrator of the fatal act of suicide. Suicide survivors usually

experience intense emotion and longings for the deceased, severely intrusive thoughts about the lost loved one, extreme feelings of isolation and emptiness, avoiding doing things that bring back memories, new or worsened sleep problems, and having no interest in activities that they (survivors) used to enjoy. What are some possible causes of suicide? To help us prevent suicide, it is prudent that we first understand the reason(s) why people attempt or ultimately commit suicide. Statistics has shown that people, who attempt or commit suicide, usually experience or have a predisposition to one or more of the following:

-Bipolar disorder. -Borderline personality disorder. -Depression. -Drug or alcohol use. -Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). -Schizophrenia. -Stressful life issues (eg, serious family, financial, or relationship problems). People, who attempt suicide are seeking relief from:

-Feelings of being a burden to family, loved ones, and friends. -Feelings of being a victim. -Feelings of guilt. -Feelings of loneliness. -Feelings of loss. -Feelings of rejection. -Feelings of shame. People attempt suicide, when they are often trying to get away from a seemingly impossible

and overwhelming situation such as:

-Aging (the elderly have the highest rate of suicide). -Death of a loved one (higher risk, if loss to suicide). -Drug or alcohol use. -Emotional trauma. -Serious physical illness. -Unemployment or money problems. Suicide risk factors in teenagers include:

-Access to weapons (especially guns). -Family member or loved one, who committed suicide. -History of hurting self on purpose (ie, self-mutilation). -History of being neglected or abused (emotionally and physically). -Living in communities, where there have been recent outbreaks of suicide among young people. -Romantic breakups. What are the risk and protective factors for suicide? Common worldwide statistics shows that:

-In North America, specifically, the United States of America has the highest suicide rates occur in non-Hispanic whites and Native Americans (ie, American Indians), while the lowest rates are in nonHispanic blacks, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics. -In Europe, the highest suicide rates are among the former Eastern Bloc countries. -South America has the lowest continued 

Rev Howell hailed as a man of integrity and good humour – Many still in disbelief at his sudden death THE UNEXPECTED discovery of the lifeless body of the Reverend Dr Conrad Howell continues to stun and aggrieve many in the Turks and Caicos Islands, days after his death. Condolence messages poured in over the past week from the Government, the Governor, the Opposition and countless others over social media, with everyone praising the late Reverend on a life well lived and dedicated to the betterment of his fellow citizens in the Islands. Shortly after Dr Howell’s body was discovered on Saturday morning (September 12), the Premier, Rufus Ewing and other ministers held a press conference to express their sincere regrets and sadness at his passing. “He is someone who I have much respect for and love for and he will be dearly missed,” the Premier told the media, when asked how he felt personally about Howell’s death, which, up to press time, had not been ruled a murder. The late Reverend is hailed as a statesman, someone who had a voice on radio and television, on Speak Your Mind, one of the prominent members of the National Honours and Awards Committee, a representative for the TCI to the United Nations Committee for decolonisation, among many other things. At the time of his death he also served as the Chaplain of the Progressive National Party (PNP). Reverend Howell’s body was discovered in the early morning hours by a dog, in the presence of police and several people who had joined an early morning search party to locate the missing man. His lifeless body was found lying in bushes down a slight hill at a side road in the Blue Mountain community, some 200 to 300 yards from his home. He was reported missing on Friday by his wife after she had last seen at about 12 midnight on Thursday. According to the Premier, when he was discovered, his body was clothed in “house type” clothing. Ewing said: “Dr Conrad Howell’s death comes as shock to all of us because he is one who represented what Turks and Caicos ought to be and is all about – someone who loved this country, someone who fought for the values that this country was built upon, someone who served in many capacities in championing and fighting for the rights of his fellow citizens, fighting for the rights of a free Turks and Caicos.” The Premier added that Howell “was known to be a man of God, a

family man and a gentle giant in his own right”. He added that with all of his accomplishments, patriotism and spirit, Howell will be deeply missed by all in the TCI. Reverend Howell’s death comes at a time when the country is being challenged and troubled by the increasing number of crimes and violent crimes in the society, Ewing noted. “It comes at a time when we are finding ourselves not having answers to these crimes. “It comes at a time when we require individuals, Government and the British Government, the Governor and everyone else to step up to the plate to address these concerns in our society.” He observed that the Reverend’s death is just another death in the string of “so called murders in our beloved Turks and Caicos Islands” over the past several years to which no closure have been brought. “Where families across the Turks and Caicos Islands are still grieving because no closure has been brought to the circumstances surrounding their [relatives’] deaths. His death, like the others, is one death too many.” The Premier further encouraged residents to come out and give information to the police force to solve this and the other unsolved cases. He added: “From Prince Smith, to Robbie Been, to Dorset Gardiner, to Quincy Gardiner, to Robert Martinez, to Kenley Walters, to Kevino Smith whose cases still remain unsolved. “I am looking forward to you, our residents to come forth and do your part, while I continue to impress upon the Governor and the Commissioner of Police to do their part, to step up. If you need resources, let us know what resources you need, let us know.” He called on the British Government and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to provide whatever assistance they can, possibly a special team with special skills to help solve the unsolved murders. Ewing gave assurances that he will spare no effort in Cabinet and the House of Assembly in appropriating whatever resources are available to solve the murders. Meanwhile, up to press time, the pathologist who performed the post mortem on Howell’s body on Wednesday had still not submitted his report to the Police Commissioner. However, Deputy Police Commissioner Rodney Adams told the press on Monday that the situation

The late Rev Dr Conrad Howell

is being treated as a suspicious death investigation in the meantime. Police further denied that there were gunshot wounds about the late Reverend’s body. The entire TCI Government on Monday offered condolences to the

family and friends on the death of the late Reverend Howell. A release from the TCIG read: “Our nation has suffered a tremendous loss today Rev Howell, as he was known to many, was a true patriot to our country and a soldier

for our people. “During his lifetime, he has made an invaluable contribution to the development of our society we are truly blessed to have known the late continued 

Father-of-three gunned down in Five Cays BY OLIVIA ROSE A FORTY-six-year-old man died after he was shot several times a few yards from his home in Five Cays, Providenciales, on Wednesday evening (September 16). No motive has been established for the brutal murder of father-ofthree Marielus Maximin, a former employee of Fortis TCI. Speaking to the Weekly News, daughter of the deceased Cindy Maximin said that at about 8pm, while completing her household chores, she heard neighbours

bellowing at her to come at once. She quickly rushed to see what the commotion was. Recounting the overwhelming experience Maximin said: “I hurried over to the bush where plenty people were gathered, not too far from here and saw my father’s body lying, lifeless in the grass and I started screaming.” She said that her father had no known enemies and was a peaceful, easy-going individual who was a highly-regarded member of the community. The visibly shaken young woman

said: “This tragedy meets my family at an already difficult time in our lives since my father was the sole bread winner.” The family has pleaded with other members of the community who may have any information on Maximin`s shooting to come forward and assist the police with their investigations. He leaves to mourn, his wife Florence, who is also six months pregnant and three children, aged 13 and nine, and 22-year-old Cindy. Police are appealing to anyone with information about this crime to

call Crimestoppers on 1-800-8477 or use the Crimestoppers online reporting page www.crimestoppers. tc. Information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

Solar power LAST month, FortisTCI announced its plans for a large scale solar system with the signing of a memorandum of understanding with a local company. The utility company will soon be launching renewable energy programmes for residential customers, with the hope of making energy supply in the TCI more cost-effective. What are your thoughts?

Suicide is no ... suicide rates. -Elderly Caucasian males have the highest suicide rate. Common worldwide geographical patterns of suicides indicate that:

-People, who live in rural areas versus urban areas are at higher risk for suicide. -People, who live the western United States versus the eastern United States are at higher risk for suicide. -The majority of suicides are committed during the spring. Common worldwide statistics shows that:

-Women continue to attempt suicide more often than men. -Men tend to complete suicide more often than women. Common risk factors statistics

for people attempting suicide include:

-A family history of attempting suicide. -A history of being physically or sexually abused. -A personal history of suicidal thoughts, threats or behaviours. -Low income. -Mental illness. -Single marital status. -Unemployment. Common risk factors statistics for methods of attempting suicide show that:

-People who attempt suicide by jumping from a height like a bridge may be more likely to be single, unemployed, and psychotic. -People, who attempt suicide by using firearms may more often have a history of legal issues, alcoholism/drug addiction, and

My thoughts are, who is the local company FortisTCI is working with? Because some are definitely better than others. Having gone solar already, (an extremely pleasant and quite costly experience) I know of several others who have not had such a positive experience, and this is going to be a massive undertaking.

Another stunt

Very few utilities are using solar panels because they are not efficient enough for full scale generation. They do work on residential applications when the customer is willing to spend tens of thousands. Fortis is fully aware of this. They are spending thousands of our dollars to put on a public relations campaign. Now they will spend more of our exorbitant bills to prove solar will not work. The truth is they are billing us a very high fuel charge today when oil is selling for less than in 2006 when they did not bill for a fuel surcharge. Every year they buy another generator which uses less fuel so they can send tens of millions of our dollars back to their headquarters in Canada.

They paid off their investment years ago.

Nothing but PR

This is more PR. Why does a utility company, given a monopoly and the right to charge any price they want by the Government nine years ago, need all this PR? Premier Rufus and our Governor need to explain why we do not have a non-political commission for oversight over FortisTCI, Lime, Digicel and Provo Stevedore. While he is explaining, why is Digicel now the Government’s phone agency without a bid tender and who in the Government profits as a result?

Great decision

Excellent! Good decision. All we have is God given sun, why not use it!

Poachers caught in TCI waters near Seal Cays TWO Dominican men are facing multiple charges after marine officers caught them transporting 35 pounds of illegal catch on Sunday (September 13). The arrest was made at around 10am after officers from the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) observed suspicious activity two miles off of Seal Cays, in TCI’s waters. The Seal Cays are about eight miles south of the Ambergris Cays, and one of the southernmost patches of ground in the Caicos Islands group. Upon investigating, officers discovered that the poacher vessel contained illegal parrot fish and lobster and that the men were in possession of an illegal spear gun and

breathing apparatus, a Government release read. DEMA Director Dr John Claydon said: “The weather conditions were against us for an operation of this kind, but we are very grateful for the effort of both the police and DEMA officers that were involved.” He added that: “Although there were more poachers that we could not apprehend safely, the officers were very professional in the way they handled the situation.” Dr Claydon further advised that this type of illegal fishing is the biggest threat to the TCI’s fisheries and a strong message needs to be sent to foreign poachers that it will not be tolerated. The poachers are charged with breaching the Fisheries Protection

No more cash collections at Customs Department CASH collections at the Customs Department’s main offices in Grand Turk and Providenciales will be discontinued as of October 13. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Finance this past week, via a press release. All money payable to the department will now be made at the Treasury, Front Street in Grand Turk or Town Centre Mall, Downtown, Providenciales. The mains offices of the Customs Department will however continue to collect by way of Visa and Master Card denominated debit/credit cards, cheques, bank drafts and cashiers cheques. Payments can also be made by Visa and Master Card denominated debit/credit cards at Road Safety Department in Providenciales and Revenue Control Department in Providenciales and Grand Turk. The ministry advised that

until further notice, all other collection points such as the Post Office, customs operations at the seaports, airports and warehouses, and Immigration Department at the airport will continue to collect cash. This new measure is aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing potential security risk to employees and the public, the ministry said. The public is being reminded that all returned cheques will attract surcharges to cover the cost of bank and handling fees. In addition, all violators will be place on a watch list at the Treasury and cheques will no longer be an acceptable means of making payments to TCIG for those in breach, due to insufficient funds. At the sole discretion of the Accountant General Department, violators may be reinstated and allowed to pay by cheques after a waiting period of at least 12 months.

The issue of illegal poaching was recently condemned by Minster of Tourism, Environment, Heritage and Culture Porsha Stubbs-Smith. “It is important that all potential violators understand that we will not stand by, while our waters and natural environment is abused. “Anyone that insists on malicious efforts similar in kind to these will be caught and prosecuted to the full

extent of the law,” Stubbs-Smith said at the time. Last July, 28 poachers together with 14 unlicensed vessels were apprehended and fined. The Fisheries Protection Ordinance stipulates that anyone who is found to be in contravention of any of the regulations will be subject to pay a $50,000 fine, 12 months’ imprisonment or both. The ordinance also prohibits the catching of parrot fish at all times.

Rev Dr. Conrad Howell and he will be greatly missed. “As the host of the popular Radio Talk Show, Expressions, Rev Howell also stirred dialogue and national debate on some of the most controversial topics of our time but one of Rev Howell's most notable national accomplishments is the penning of the National Song This Land Of Ours. “Our prayers are with the family and friends of Rev Dr. Conrad Howell. May God be your source of comfort during this difficult time. May He strengthen you and keep you and may He bless these Turks and Caicos Islands.” The Governor, Peter Beckingham, issued the following statement: “I was deeply upset to learn of the untimely passing of Dr Conrad Howell at the weekend. “A beacon of light in TCI has been extinguished, and I join the Premier, leader of the opposition and many others in mourning his tragic death. His passing is in every respect a bleak day for the Turks and Caicos Islands. “As I said to Conrad Howell’s wife in a note to her on Saturday, I had the good fortune to meet Conrad on several occasions. “His good humour and wit were much in evidence, even when we were the most-friendly of sparring partners on his hugely popular radio broadcast. “I also mentioned to Mrs Howell how struck I was by Conrad’s powerful presence at the National

Hero’s Day commemorations just a few months ago in Grand Turk. “Our country has this weekend lost one of its own national heroes, whose contribution to religion, broadcasting, education and the community at large will be deeply missed. “But at least his presence will stay with us forever in the beautiful words of the National Hymn.” The Opposition, PDM, also offered their condolences and words of comfort to the bereaved family and nation. “The Turks and Caicos mourns the loss of the Rev Dr Conrad Howell, a prominent Turks and Caicos Islander. “As a people we have been flung into a state of grief and shock over his sudden and tragic demise. “In the midst of what seems to be an air of grave uncertainty, our hearts and thoughts are immediately turned towards his wife, Brickell, his children, Angelica, Conrad Jr, Cristin and Courtnee, his siblings and wider family. “Anyone who knew Rev Howell knew that his family was a close knit one and the part of his life that he celebrated. “We extend our sincerest and deepest condolences to them and pray that they will allow the God of Peace to envelope and comfort them at this time. “The Late Rev Dr Conrad Howell was well known throughout these Islands for the many roles he played or was playing in these Islands at the time of his passing. “Perhaps more notable of these is his current role as host of the Radio

Show ‘Expressions,’ host of PTV’s Show ‘On Your Mind,’ a serving member of the National Honours and Awards Committee, PTA president at the country’s largest secondary school and the school named for his father Clement Howell, president and joint owner of the University College of Providenciales, immediate past president of the Providenciales Ministerial Fellowship and author of ‘We Salute This Land of Ours’. “A citizen who chose to be a participant in his country’s affairs through various means, he was a constant voice in the national dialogue. His life is therefore worthy of celebration. “We pause to also celebrate the unity we saw displayed by members of the public on the Island of Providenciales for a cause that was bigger than what too often divides us. “The partnership between the police and the people was an encouraging breath of fresh air. “We are grateful for this and to all of you who answered the call to be brave and caring citizens, the best kind, we say thank you. May God bless you and your homes. “I wish to also use this opportunity to encourage members of the public especially those on social media to be responsible in their comments and to allow the family time to grieve and the police time to investigate. “In circumstances of this sort, it is wise to wait on the official release from the police. “Today we mourn, we celebrate but we should also give thanks for the life and contributions of the late Rev Dr Conrad Howell.”

Women urged to take up breast screening By OLIVIA ROSE AS THE world turns pink in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the National Cancer Society (NCS) of Turks and Caicos Islands is urging women to focus on their breast health through regular self-examination and screening. During a press conference at the Regent Palms on Thursday

(September 17) general manager of the Palms, Karen Whitt, emphasised the importance of breast screening for women. She said the seventh annual ‘In the Pink’ fundraiser event, held to raise awareness of the terminal disease, will place even more emphasis on encouraging more women on the island to “get screened”. Echoing her call for early

screening was Rosemary Jolly, president of the National Cancer Society. Jolly said: “The organisation during the month of October will be feverishly advocating for more women aged 40 and over to pay attention to their bodies, adopt healthier lifestyles through diet and regular exercise.” She said that more screening

would result in the detection of earlystage breast cancer and would make way for the application of lifesaving early treatment interventions. Jolly, quoting statistics from the NCS database, noted: “We do have a number of persons here fighting the disease; here on the island we have approximately 191 persons on record today, they are still persons who prefer not to be recognised.” The NCS president said the organisation is continuously seeking ways to assist these people through

various means. “We want to give them financial and moral support so we are pairing with other NGOs which will give more support to the National Cancer Society.” Speaking to the magnitude the event and the impact it has made in the lives of those battling the illness Jolly said: “This event is huge! “It is one of the largest events of the Cancer Society year, the continued 

The other side of politics POLITICS is concerned with the best way to govern, to realise the needs of the people. It is about institutions, their democratic function, and how, through their policies, they advance the welfare of all citizens, without favour. Some people, who only know of one way politics operates, see it as a ‘dirty business.’ But politics is a moral activity and those who get involved should be people of integrity. And most people with ethical values avoid contesting office because of the abuse they fear their family would suffer or they shudder about what the activity of politics might demand of them which could soil their character. It is these very persons that politics needs most to change behaviours and introduce new systems that would restore dignity to the process. In relation to this, one political thinker said that: “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” Traditional politics selects close supporters to run for office. It deals in deception and seeks the welfare of the politician, despite what is said about being for the people.

With this kind of politics, constituents rarely see their representative. Have no consistent evidence of what has been done to benefit the constituency as a whole, except periodic clean up campaigns for media exposure purposes and whatever is done in addition, is often exaggerated. But the involvement of significant others is not mentioned. This is the style of politics we have come to know. But some elected members do their best within the limits of the system but do not sufficiently pressure it to work on behalf of the people. This is why many voters see politics as having no purpose and interpret the behaviour of some politicians as being only interested in the perks of office. This is not a totally accurate picture. But this is the penalty a society endures when capable people with good intentions refuse to participate

in politics. The country ends up being governed, many times ineffectively, by those lacking the skills to move it on its proper course. The other side of politics is where people of proven competence get involved with no ulterior motive. Their objective is the good of the country and its citizens. These persons have an unwavering commitment to transform the system and shape its institutions to deliver for every sector of society. Such persons are driven to become politically involved because of their values, and their leadership results in a more responsive and responsible society. Because of this new political ethic, ‘government by inferiors,’ if it existed, is replaced by those fit to govern.

Rest in peace Rev Howell Dear Editor, As a nation we deeply mourn the loss of a Turks and Caicos Islands’ pioneer, a good-hearted human being and someone who has shown humility, generosity and passion for peace and prosperity. Throughout his lifetime, Reverend Dr Conrad Howell stood tall and strong against poverty and agitated for greater social justice and equality amongst men. He touched and inspired many of us with his humble persona, morality, wisdom and statesmanship and has left a mark on our country’s history in a way that very few of us will be able to accomplish in our own life time. The Reverend has become a symbol of good governance, freedom and justice in Turks and Caicos and was called on to support countless initiatives in favour of the same ideals, which often, he could not resist. His extraordinary dedication and

life ideals will continue to inspire us, for greater inclusiveness and shared prosperity. Indeed, his work will continue to be inspiring within this great (is) land of ours. Rev Conrad Howell, the man has gone home and we have lost one of the most influential and profoundly good human beings that many of us will share time with in these beautiful Islands. It falls to us to move forward as best as we can with the example that he set, to make decisions guided not by hate but by love, to never discount the difference that one person can make and to strive for a future that is worthy of sacrifice. Let us pause to reflect and give thanks for the life of Rev Dr Conrad Howell. May God bless his memory and keep him in eternal peace. Benneth Williams, Providenciales

contribution for the last seven years is close to $25,000.” This money, she explained, goes directly to fund overseas surgeries and other medical expenditure for people who have no alternative as it relates to financing. Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Josephine Connolly said: “In the Pink is a great event because it brings together the community and it’s all for a good cause, so I want to invite all of you to come and support.” She acknowledged the importance of the public’s support for the worthy cause since it demonstrates solidarity for those living with the disease. The team of ladies all adorned in pink highlighted several upcoming events, scheduled for each Saturday in the month, and appealed for full support from the local community. One of the major highlights and fresh aspects for this year is the creation of a unique design which is touted to be the eye-catcher of the event. The design, which will be placed on t-shirts, captures the spirit of the Islands in a distinct fashion, which takes the form of a conch shell depicting several landmarks on the island. The annual ‘In the Pink’ breast cancer fundraiser will be held at the Palms on October 10. The event plays host to a shopping frenzy and a lavish after party, and pink poker tournament at the palms courtyard with music featuring local DJs, as well as silent auction. With donations from corporate business and individuals, the team intends to transform several of the suites into a shopping paradise, allowing buyers to snag bargains on a wide selection of new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. The annual walkathon will be held on the first Saturday in October, at 5.45am from IGA Gourmet in Grace Bay to the International School of the Turks and Caicos (formerly The Ashcroft School). In the Pink, a powerful and inspiring event, was created six years ago to honour breast cancer survivors, and to raise awareness about steps individuals can take to reduce the risk of breast cancer. In recent years, the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre and the National Cancer Society have seen an increase in cancer cases in the Turks and Caicos Islands, especially in breast cancer. Data shows that about 50 percent of the 191 cancer cases are breast cancer cases, typically in women over the age of 40. Much work has been done locally to ensure that people have access to requisite treatment. Most medical experts remain convinced that mammograms save lives and that women should continue having them. Screening mammograms remain the only statistically proven method for reducing deaths from breast cancer.

REAL TALK

Should citizenship be established by an ordinance? – Or enshrined in the constitution? I AM a firm believer in democracy and the people’s right to exercise their franchise and elect their representatives to make decisions on their behalf. Nevertheless, there are certain decisions that I am careful in entrusting to representatives to make on my behalf. One such decision is the issue of citizenship. I have spent a great deal of my life examining the documents which govern several neighbouring countries to better understand them and the reasons why their cultures are the way they are. In my reflection, I have concluded that the authors of their constitution chose to include provisions in their document to safeguard the survival of their ethnicity and future generations. For these reasons, 90 percent of those countries’ constitutions have established the conditions upon which an individual becomes a citizen. Additionally, the constitution is not a document that should be altered and amended every time a

government policy change or a new government is elected. Hence, the provisions in the constitution is supposed to safeguard the people against political nepotism, corruption and even parliamentarians who seek to abuse power and make decisions that are not in the interest of the people who elect them. Nevertheless, this country is about to have its conditions for citizenship established by an immigration ordinance. I welcome the establishment of such a provision in this country because we have been operating with blinders on for quite a while in regards to how someone can become a Belonger. However, I believe it should be established in the constitution of this country and not by an ordinance. First and foremost, Ordinances are drafted and decided on by elected legislators. At the rate we change legislators in this country and the level of political immaturity that has plagued this country over the years, I am not enthused about citizenship being determined by legislators in this country.

By Jas Walkin

BIOGRAPHY: Jas was born with a physical disability and diagnosed with a mild form of muscular dystrophy. His early childhood was characterised with trying to fit in in a regular school environment unequipped to cater to special needs students. With support from family, teachers and the community he graduated as valedictorian of Raymond Gardiner High School and has been a graduate teacher for the past last nine years.

I do not want every time we have a new parliament, that we have a new citizenship policy. Secondly, ordinances are driven by policies and campaign promises. Citizenship should not be decided by policies and campaign promises. It needs to be decided by the direct, expressed will of the people through a referendum and the results should be cemented in the people’s constitution. Finally, the very idea of giving the immigration department an added responsibility to safe guard a vital aspect of this country’s national security is traumatising to me. Many of our current immigration ordinances were and are not being enforced in this country and have led us to the dilemma we now have in

regard to citizenship, illegal and legal migrants. Hence establishing an immigration ordinance to rectify the situation is not giving me a boost of confidence. I fear that every time we recognise the impact of not enforcing immigration laws and policies of this country our response is to make new laws. However, making new laws and legislation in this country has never been our biggest problem. Effectively and consistently enforcing those laws has been the challenge for this country. Will this current immigration bill be any different? I know what I think, but I will keep those thoughts to myself.

COMMENTARY

Total frustration

IT WAS only a few years ago when we were part of a mission to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London petitioning for return to internal government. Rev Conrad Howell was part of our small group. We appreciated that association. During that trip we found him to be a quiet and contemplative gentleman. Now he is gone. Every advanced music student we have in Middle Caicos has been taught how to play ‘This land of ours’. They all know the lyrics from school lessons. This is the legacy of Conrad which will live on. Now everyone connected with the TCI is in mourning. Mourning for Conrad and for the country. Homicides have touched every family. Years ago the first premier’s daughter’s remains were found in Long Bay. At that time there were few of these terrible unsolved crimes.

By David Tapfer

David is a retired mobile hydraulic engineer and business executive. He has been married to Middle Caicos native Yvette Robinson Tapfer for 25 years and has lived in Conch Bar, Middle Caicos, since 2002. David formerly served as branch chairman of the PDM from 2008 to 2011

Not long ago our family was affected. My mother-in-law was murdered in her house. The disturbed young man confessed his actions were part of a plan to obtain an automobile. What brought him to this point at 14 years of age? The last 10 years have seen an escalation of attacks on the basic fibre of the society of the TCI and in the last three years crime is almost a daily occurrence. It has touched everyone, so many families. What are the reasons behind these crimes? What are the motives? Is it frustration?

Then what is behind the frustration that causes people to act out these terrible crimes? Frustration is everywhere. Every Government function is stalled and without the patience of Job it is easy to get frustrated. Those without patience can lose control. Despite all the crimes only a few criminals have been apprehended and forced to face justice. The number one top priority of each and every government in the history of mankind has been to protect its society from dangers from the outside and other dangers from within. In recent years TCIG has failed.

Without a safe environment nothing else matters. Do we all need to change the law and start carrying guns for personal protection? Very recently our Premier has said he is not concerned about the security of the TCI and refused to fund additional protection during the coming trials. Trials to test the innocence of his party members. In Grand Turk the Premier indicated security was not his top priority. Amazing! In the TCI safety, basic morality and the ability to thrive are now out of the control of this Government and we are in the hands of God. Hopefully by the time this column reaches the streets, God will guide the people charged with justice to locate the criminals, discover their motive and advise the public. A family man, a man of God has now gone down and the public needs to find out why!

Lime visits North and Middle Caicos LIME customers in North and Middle Caicos were recently given the opportunity to purchase credit and prepaid handsets as well access a multiplicity of services offered by the company. During a visit by a technical team to the Islands on September 8, residents were briefed on several upgraded services, a release from the company read. At the event, held at the Paul Higgs Building Complex where the team met with District Commissioner Cynclair Musgrove, residents were in high spirits to know that Lime

remembers the citizens, more specifically senior citizens. According to the release Gwendolyn Laborde, a customer who is also a senior citizen, said: “I feel wonderful with Lime being here. “I know I was going to get something. That’s why I am happy. I wish they can come every day.” Laborde won a new Alcatel C7 smart phone during the Lime trivia segment. Elizabeth Gardiner, another trivia winner, expressed gratitude for copping a new prima 3G handset. Among other winners in the

trivia segment in North Caicos were Brandon Williams and Nadine Forbes. As the day progressed and the team decentralised their outreach to other nearby communities, several residents of Middle Caicos were afforded the same opportunity to purchase their handsets at a special price and win some extra credit. Delivering brief remarks at the outreach, Lime general manager Delleriece Hall said: “Every opportunity we as a team get to reach out to our valued customers we take advantage of it.

“We want to resound the simple message to our customers that Lime cares, and in order to remain number one in the market, it takes their trust, their commitment and their support, to drive that success day by day, month by month, year after year after year.” Hall added: “We were more than happy to be on the ground in North and Middle Caicos to hear and to see and to get a better understanding of the needs and opportunities that existed for these islands.” Meanwhile, District Commissioner Musgrove, while thanking the company for reaching out to their

customers, stated: “We were very, very, happy to have Lime here. “It brought out not only the senior citizens, but it brought out all sectors of the community and they were excited because it is not often that we have something given to us. “So we appreciate it and I am sure everyone is leaving here smiling. So, thanks to LIME for making what would’ve been an ordinary day, extraordinary.” One of the major highlights of the day was the $500 in giveaways to many smiling customers, the release added.

Autistic classroom a success thus far BY DAISY HANDFIELD JUST two weeks into the new school year Maxcia Rigby, director and chairman of the Hope Foundation, said that she is impressed with speed at which the children at the new autistic classroom are learning. On Wednesday (September 16) Rigby told the Weekly News that the group has received a positive response from the community and even some international exposure. “We have had numerous inquiries from more persons that have come forward requesting assistance, so we have seen an increase in numbers of persons that we have that are autistic in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Rigby said. In partnership with the Mills Institute in Long Bay, Providenciales, the autistic classroom is currently catering to five students with the assistance of one teacher and a teacher’s aide. Rigby said that for the past two weeks the students have been engaging in centred learning, working on behavioural skills such as attending, following instructions and on their sign motor skills.

What differentiates this classroom from a normal classroom is that in a normal classroom the students are all taught with a general curriculum while in this classroom each student is taught with an individual educational plan. Each students is taught based on their specific need. The founder of the classroom said that at the moment children between the ages of four and seven are being accepted because that is the developmental age for kindergarten up to the first grade. She said: “We are very excited about the classroom being opened. “We have put in a lot of hard work and we were committed to fulfilling the promise to the people of the Turks and Caicos to have the classroom opened by September 2015. “We appreciate all the support that we have gotten for the foundation.” The classroom operates during normal school hours at the Mills Institute and aftercare is provided up to 5.30 pm during school days. Last April the Hope Foundation was launched in the TCI to cater to the needs of autistic children. The foundation will have their

annual back to school workshop, an ongoing training workshop for parents, teachers and the community

at large commencing on October 3. Rigby said that they will continue to raise awareness in the

public about autism and will also continue to raise funds to keep the classroom ongoing.

Pupils get back to school supplies EIGHTY-five backpacks and other school supplies were recently donated to children in Grand Turk, South Caicos, Salt Cay, Providenciales and North Caicos by Scotia Bank. The donation was made in partnership with the St Monica’s Young Adults Ministry (CONNECT) in an effort to make the new school year brighter for both parents and students. The donation, which was made through the Department of Social Development and Gender Affairs,

included composition textbooks, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, calculators, dictionaries and scissors. The department also received school uniforms and school shoes among other essential school supplies, a press release read. Social Development Director Tiffany Thomas-Browne, who received the donation on behalf of the schools, said: “This act of kindness will help to lighten the burden of many parents who are experiencing financial problems in preparing their children for school and it will

definitely assist the children in their learning and scholastic experience.” She added: “We are happy that the business community and faith based organisations have seen it fit to partner with the TCIG in bringing good cheer to our children’s academic development. “We look forward to partnering with other companies and agencies in the future.” Several social workers and the Director of Social Development and Gender Affairs were present to receive the donations.

High school gets gifts from basketball superstar By Marguerite Anderson RAYMOND Gardiner High School (RGHS) in North Caicos was showered with gifts on Tuesday (September 15) when representatives from Beaches and Sandals resorts paid a visit. The occasion was to donate basketball footwear to the school’s basketball team, a gift promised a year ago by NBA star, Dwyane Wade, who had visited the Turks and Caicos Islands in September 2014. In an interview with Elanor Krzanowski, public relations manager for Beaches Turks and Caicos, she explained that Beaches and Sandals resorts have a philanthropic arm known as the Sandals Foundation and that it is mandatory that the organisation adopts schools across the Caribbean. Krzanowski indicated that RGHS is not one of the adopted schools but that due to the resorts’ partnership with education, it chose to reach out to the school in giving environmental and educational support .

Wade is expected to make another visit to Providenciales by the end of the coming week and Sandals Foundation has extended an invitation to five members of the RGHS basketball team to visit Providenciales for an opportunity to meet the basketball superstar on Saturday, September 26. During Wade’s visit a year ago, the Sandals Resort embarked on a partnership with Wade’s World Foundation which is spearheaded by Dwyane Wade himself. Through this partnership, an agreement was made with the foundation to build ten basketball courts across the Caribbean. Already, plans are in effect with contractors to build a court in Five Cays, Providenciales. The erection of these sporting arenas will include a range of Dwyane Wade’s props. Wade’s upcoming visit is a follow-up to the one last year at a ‘Game Changer’ event which saw the basketball icon interacting with RGHS’s coach, Donavan Garvey

and a number of final year studentathletes from the school, all of whom graduated in July 2015. The basketball superstar had promised, then, to donate three hundred Dwyane Wade branded basketball shoes to the TCI. Despite delays, Wade has kept his word and has donated these to the Sandals Foundation. Sandals felt that the footwear should not just be given to underprivileged kids but to school teams. Krzanowski explained that they saw it fit to give these gifts where they would be used to further the skills of players, to promote the love of the sports and to make basketball teams better. A presentation to the 12 team members of the school’s basketball team was made by Krzanowski and by Mickey Clare who visited the school’s campus on September 15. Other basketball teams in the public schools across the Turks and Caicos Islands will also benefit from gift donations in this form.

Tamika Handfield, registered dietician and organiser of annual move-a-thon fundraiser

Campaigning for Move-athon TCI 2016 in the works BY DAISY HANDFIELD ORGANISER of the annual Movea-thon fundraising initiative, Tamika Handfield has already started promoting the event which is geared at encouraging residents to make ‘health’ a lifestyle and not a hobby. The event is scheduled to take place at the Children’s Park in the Lower Bight, Providenciales, at 5.30am on January 9, 2016. Participants have the option of participating in the 5km, 10km or half marathon, all of which can be done either by walking, running or biking. There will be medals for those finishing first, second and third in each category. The park will be the finishing point for all categories. In an interview with Handfield on Tuesday (September 15), she clarified that this fundraising initiative was a non-profit event put on by Nutrition in Demand annually. She said: “All funds raised, help carry out the programmes of the non-profit in the community. “These programmes include providing nutrition education workshops for churches, schools and other community groups, culinary classes for children and physical activity and nutrition camps. “This event will also help persons’ kids start their healthy resolutions for the New Year as it is right after the holiday season.” Handfield said that her and her team are expecting a great turnout

as always, for this year’s event. “The community has always given us great support and we asking for the same this time around. “Also asking for the support from the corporate community. “Thanks for the continued support we have gotten from everyone,” Handfield said. According to Handfield, one of the main goals of this event is to make it an international one that attracts world class runners from around the world. She said that it is known that sports tourism is a big deal in other countries and she believes that the same can be true for Turks and Caicos Islands. Handfield said that adults will be charged $20 to enter while children aged 11-years-old and younger will be charged $10. Groups of 10 participants or more will pay $20. Following the event is a huge health fair with people from all medical fields. Free food and drink will be available. More information is available at www.nutritionindemand. com, where participants can also register. Nutrition in Demand is a non-profit organisation aimed at raising awareness of health and healthy eating through a variety of projects including disease prevention and management workshops and nutrition and physical activity summer camps for children among many other projects.

Beaches helps sous chef pursue higher education THE SANDALS Corporate University recently granted Chris Johnson, a sous chef at Beaches Turks and Caicos, the opportunity to earn a certification which completed half of his associate’s degree. According to a press release issued by the resort, last month Johnson spent five days with nine other Beaches and Sandals team members at the Liaison College in downtown Toronto, Canada participating in the Advanced Culinary Skills Programme. “This has been a great culinary experience and have definitely given me the edge and the international exposure that I needed to pursue my career,” Johnson said. “As a sous chef, I work with over 30 cooks on given day and I am excited to share what I have learned with my team.” The chef began his career with Sandals in 2004 as a line chef. He has been with the company since 2009 and is currently working in a managerial position as a sous chef. The programme was funded entirely through Sandals Corporate University. After the programme Johnson was

awarded a scholarship to complete his associate’s degree from the Western Hospitality Institute. He said: “Before this programme I didn’t have a degree. “Now, thanks to the generosity of Sandals Corporate University, I have begun my degree and I was even recognised for a scholarship that will help me complete this portion of my education.”

The first two days the Advance Culinary Skill Programme was spent cooking. On the first day of the programme the group was trained by Michael Elliot, a culinary instructor at the college. Elliot gave the class instruction on basic cooking and plating designs. The second day was spent creating six different types of bread. On the third day Johnson and the other team members participated in a seminar about the yield formula. The formula is used in kitchens to predict the amount of food the kitchen needs. This new knowledge helps the team members lower the amount of waste they produce and keeps food costs down. It will also help these team members understand more about menu planning, changing the menu and organising the menu. The fourth day of the programme the group went to China Town in Toronto to learn about food quality. The final day was spent tasting wine and visiting Niagara Falls. “I’m really excited to bring everything I learned back to my kitchen and my staff,” Johnson said.

Portion size key in tackling obesity, says study REDUCING the portion sizes offered in supermarkets, restaurants and at home would help reverse the obesity epidemic, say researchers. They say their review of 61 studies

provides the “most conclusive evidence to date” that portion size affects how much we unwittingly eat. The team at the University of

We shed tears knowing that you are no longer with us You have gone to another paradise, No longer will you be near; We are left here wishing we could have seen that last smile in your eyes; Dearly departed! The tragedy of your passing Left us all in shattered pieces Never have we thought of letting you RIP from our tender care, The blood that once flooded your bones And replenished your soul Is now flourishing the earth; You’ve returned home; By an unexpected surprise, Your presence was diminished From the loud outcries of your voice No one was there to hear In your time of fear Your life was meaningless to your brother Cane He showed you no mercy As he ripped you from your limb Anti-Christ like As a lion, you should have conquered But weapons on the battlefield left you outnumbered Tirelessly you fought, until there was no more fight left in you; Roses pour at your feet In remembrance As the thorns crown the streets And hailing them as kings The walking dead is what they're celebrating You’ve returned home! As they flee the scene; And just as they have haunted you So shall they be haunted; No white flags shall be drawn, For those who have declared war on God’s temple No longer shall they chant in solitude For victory shall be yours Now that you have returned home. Dedication to Kevino ‘Bah’ Smith ...you are missed dearly! And to all those who lost their lives to senseless violence - may your souls rest in peace.

Cambridge also said smaller plates, glasses and cutlery helped people eat less. Experts said people were “reluctant” to leave a plate with food on it. Their data, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, shows that when people are offered more food they will eat it. And the team warns that in recent decades portion sizes have been increasing. About two in three adults in the UK are either overweight or obese, which increases the risk of heart problems, type 2 diabetes and cancer. The findings, which are based on 6,711 people taking part in a wide range of clinical trials, suggest that eliminating “large portions” could cut up to 279 calories a day out of people’s diets. Dr Ian Shemilt, from Cambridge’s Behaviour and Health Research Unit, told the BBC News website: “This is the most conclusive evidence to date that people consistently consume more food and drink when

given larger portions, packaging or tableware. “Consumers do have a role to play - for example, all of us can reduce the size of plates or glasses we use and put pressure on the pubs and restaurants we visit by asking for a smaller portion.” The team also says government measures to force smaller packs to offer better value for money and upper limits on the size of energydense foods would help people lose weight. Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health

England, said: “This study clearly demonstrates that reducing portion sizes is a successful way to cut calories. “It’s important to keep an eye on portion sizes when cooking, shopping and eating out to avoid overeating and help maintain a healthy weight.” Prof Brian Ratcliffe, emeritus professor of nutrition at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, said: “People seem to be reluctant to leave or waste food and so consume what they are served or find larger portions more attractive.

Study finds marijuana smokers may be more at risk of developing pre-diabetes MARIJUANA users may be more likely to develop pre-diabetes – a condition in which blood sugar levels are abnormally high – than those who have never smoked it, a new US study has found. Data collected from a group of more than 3,000 people in the United States showed that adults who currently used marijuana were 65 per cent more likely to have poor sugar control which can lead to type 2 diabetes. Those who no longer smoked the drug, but had used it 100 times or more in their lifetime, had a 49 per cent greater chance of developing the condition. The group of more than 3,000 Americans are now in their 30th year of a study called the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults. They were 18-30 when they were recruited in 1985 and 1986. The percentage who self-reported current use of marijuana declined from over 28 per cent in 1985-1986 to 12 per cent in 2010-2011. Authors of the study, led by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health’s Mike Bancks, said: “Marijuana use, by status or lifetime frequency, was not associated with incidence or presence of diabetes after adjustment for potential confounding factors. “However, marijuana use was associated with the development

and prevalence of prediabetes after adjustment. Specifically, occurrence of prediabetes in middle adulthood was significantly elevated for individuals who reported using marijuana in excess of 100 times by young adulthood. Previous studies looking at marijuana use had found that users had lower rates of diabetes compared with nonusers, said Bancks. In those studies, however, both marijuana use and diabetes were assessed at the time, meaning it was unclear whether people were using

the drug before they developed diabetes, or afterward, he said. Additionally: “It’s unclear how marijuana use could place an individual at increased risk for prediabetes, yet not diabetes,” the scientists wrote. The researchers offered several reasons to explain this observation. For one, it’s possible that people who were more likely to develop diabetes were left out of the study, because in order to be included, people had to be free of diabetes at the start of the follow-up period.

How does your garden grow 

Yellow elder YELLOW elder grows as a densely branched shrub or small tree. It has bright green opposite leaves, which are pinnately compound. Common yellow elder (Tecoma stans var stans) is a Central and South American tree that can grow up to 25ft. It has bright yellow flowers and dense, lushly green foliage that is evergreen. Common names include yellow trumpet bush, yellow bells, yellow elder and ginger-Thomas. Tecoma stans comes from desert shrub lands and dry forests in the region from Texas and Arizona southward to Argentina. It has become established in many parts of the Pacific and is naturalising in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In some places, it invades dry disturbed sites.

Yellow elder will grow on a wide variety of soils, including sand and lime rock. The plants can be cut to the ground for rejuvenation in the early spring or carefully sheared during the growing season to control shape and size and promote new flushes of flowers. The flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The yellow elder needs full sun and likes well drained soil. Potted plants should be given minimal water when not in active growth. Fresh seeds germinate readily in sandy soil in the spring. Cuttings root easily under mist in the summer (choose vigorous young semi-woody branch tips and not old woody stems or fresh green shoots). Yellow elder may have a rather awkward shape, so it is best set among

more consistent shrubs where it can contribute colour to a border or screen. The yellow blooms are spectacular behind blue agave or a lower hedge of bougainvillea. Since this species drops its abundant blossoms before they wither, it can advantageously be placed where the fallen blossoms will form a pool of gold on the ground. Yellow elder has been used for a variety of purposes in herbal medicine. Its primary applications

have been in treating diabetes and digestive problems. Extracts from Tecoma stans leaves have been found to inhibit the growth of the yeast infection, Candida albicans. Yellow elder also contains several compounds noted for their catniplike effects on felines. Yellow elder is just beginning to get the horticultural recognition it deserves. This is an easy to grow and gloriously floriferous plant that has great potential in the nursery

industry. The yellow elder is the official flower of the US Virgin Islands, where its cheerful yellow blossoms have long been appreciated for their contribution to tropical colour. In the Islands it seems only moderately invasive, but readily establishes naturalised colonies on some parts of the Islands. Notice that it has become a serious problem in French Polynesia, where it forms dense stands that inhibit regeneration of other plant species.

POLICE SAFETY TIPS

Know how to report suspicious activities AS THE additional ‘eyes and ears’ of law enforcement, citizens can help to reduce crime, improve safety and increase the quality of neighbourhood life by knowing what to report and how to report it. Now more than ever, citizens are needed to come forward and provide valuable information. Remember, don’t be shy – your job is simply to report, and police will take your call seriously and check out the situation. What you see and report may be invaluable and may save lives. It can be confusing about what to report and when to report it. Suspicious activities can refer to incidents, events, individuals or circumstances that seem unusual. Some common examples

of suspicious activities include a stranger loitering in your neighbourhood or a vehicle cruising the streets repeatedly, someone peering into cars or windows, a high volume of traffic going to and coming from a home on a daily basis, someone loitering around schools or secluded areas, strange odours coming from a house or building, open or broken doors and windows at a closed business or unoccupied residence, sounds of breaking glass, gunshots, screaming or fighting; strangers removing licence plates or loading valuables into vehicles from a residence. A quick and accurate description of events, vehicles, and persons can make all the difference in apprehending a potential criminal. Any type of activity or

circumstance that seems unusual should be reported. Citizens should generally report suspicious activities, people and vehicles, illegal activities, unusual events or incidents and dangerous situations. By reporting these types of suspicious activities, citizens can help police make their communities safer and more secure, reduce violence, minimise victimisation, reduce crime and violence and improve the overall quality of life. When reporting suspicious persons, provide as much detail as possible. Start with the basics and get more specific. One reliable method to consistently make good suspect descriptions is to begin at the head and work your way down.

By Audley Astwood Audley, a former police detective and broadcaster, is currently the press officer for the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. His main focus is on crime prevention and community policing. For more information call 941-4448 or visit www.tcipolice.tc.

When reporting suspicious vehicles, provide as much information as possible about the vehicle, its occupants, the licence plate or any identifying marks or characteristics, its activities and direction of travel. If you have a pen and paper handy, write down the information so you can read it to the police. When reporting locations of suspicious activities, provide as much information as possible. An exact location and specific address is always best if possible.

Provide landmarks that can be recognised by police. Describe the location with as much detail as possible. Calling the police to just say that there’s a suspicious person on my street does not constitute dispatching an officer. You need specific, timely and relevant information so that the appropriate response can be achieved. For more information, please visit www.tcipolice.tc.

Say so long to being sedentary STANDING for a few minutes while at work can have lasting health benefits. Whether we’re watching TV, driving to work or on the computer at our workplace, we’re doing it. The ‘it’ is sitting, and it’s becoming a big problem, according to health experts. We may not consider sitting to be as detrimental to one’s health as puffing on a cigarette but the harmful effects of sitting can wreak havoc on the body just as smoking can. According to Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Dr James Levine, the majority of people spend a whopping 10 to 15 hours a day sitting.

From sun up to sun down many activities that are part of our daily routine involve this sedentary action. Just how bad is sitting? A recent analysis suggests: “There are many chronic diseases and conditions associated with excess sitting.” Those who sit for prolonged periods of time may be at greater risk of obesity, type two diabetes, heart disease or even cancer. Time to turn off the TV As TV watching is one of the more popular activities we engage in while sitting, it might be time to

turn it off. In a study of 8,800 adults, reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, Australian researchers discovered that each hour spent watching TV daily “is associated with an 18 percent increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease”. Keep your body moving You don’t have to succumb to the sitting disease. Here are some easy

ways to get moving: For 10 minutes of every hour get up and move around. Stretch your legs. Stand up during meetings or conduct walking meetings. Walk to see your co-workers instead of emailing them. Use a standing desk or a treadmill desk. Always choose the stairs.

Baha Mar’s Chapter 11 case thrown out THE Delaware Bankruptcy Court’s decision to throw out Baha Mar developer Sarkis Izmirlian’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case on Tuesday has validated the Bahamian government and “disappointed” the Cable Beach resort. Prime Minister Perry Christie said that the US ruling advances the government’s objective and recognises that the interest of the involved Bahamian entities would be best served in this country. The effect of US Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Carey’s ruling is to remove the last potential obstacle to the Bahamian Supreme Court and its joint provisional liquidators taking full control over the stalled $3.5bn mega-resort. And Baha Mar CEO Sarkis Izmirlian is faced with a stark choice: either reach a deal with the China Export Import Bank (CEXIM) and China State Construction (CCA) and government on far less favourable terms before the November 2 winding-up petition hearing in Supreme Court, or face losing his family’s $850-$900m equity. Judge Carey said on Tuesday that if he were convinced that denying the dismissal motions would have the effect desired by the debtors - bringing CCA, CEXIM and the government back to the bargaining table, he might consider denying the dismissal motions. However, he said the evidence did not reflect this and he was not convinced this would happen “in short order”. The ruling read: “The Dismissal Motions are denied as to the chapter 11 case of Northshore Mainland Services, Inc and pursuant to Bankruptcy Code 305 (a), the Dismissal Motions are granted, without prejudice as to the Debtor’s remaining chapter 11 cases.”

The effect of US Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Carey’s ruling is to remove the last potential obstacle to the Bahamian Supreme Court and its joint provisional liquidators taking full control over the stalled $3.5bn mega-resort.

Northshore is an American affiliate company of Baha Mar which does its business in the US. In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Christie said: “The government welcomes the decision today of the Delaware Bankruptcy Court to dismiss the Chapter 11 proceedings against the Bahamian Baha Mar entities. In so doing, the Bankruptcy Court agreed that the future of the Baha Mar resort should be determined in the proceedings in the Supreme Court of the Bahamas, in which Justice Winder has appointed provisional liquidators. “The government’s primary objective is, and has always been, to see the resort completed, opened and operating as soon as possible. The Delaware Bankruptcy Court’s decision advances that objective and recognises that the interests of the Bahamian Baha Mar entities and their creditors will be best served by the Bahamian proceedings and by negotiations. “The Government therefore

invites all parties to join it in cooperating with the provisional liquidators to bring about a prompt resolution of this matter in the interests of the Bahamian people.” However, Baha Mar maintained that the ruling would have no effect on its priority to ensure that the West Bay Street is property completed and opened as successfully as possible. It pledged to work with the Supreme Court-appointed provisional liquidators with a view to resolving the issues which have prevented the resort from opening without delay. “Baha Mar is disappointed that the motions by China State Construction and The ExportImport Bank of China to vacate Baha Mar’s Chapter 11 process have been granted by the US Court,” a statement from the resort read, “with the exception of the Chapter 11 case of Northshore Mainland Services. Accordingly, Baha Mar will explore its alternatives with respect to today’s Court decision.

Emergency protocols activated after nurses in Jamaica stage sick-out THE Ministry of Health in Jamaica has activated emergency protocols following a sick-out by registered nurses at several health facilities across the island. The ministry said the level of absenteeism was 52 per cent. The nurses are reportedly taking the action, which they began this morning, to protest government’s delay in giving them retroactive pay from a reclassification exercise. The money has been outstanding since 2013. While there has been no official notification of industrial action by the executive of the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) the ministry said it has alerted the

Ministries of Finance and Planning and Labour and Social Security. Minister of Health Dr. Fenton Ferguson says the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated and emergency protocols are in place to ensure that operations at health facilities are not severely hampered during the sick-out action. “The Regional Technical Directors have all been alerted and directed to monitor the situation at the local level. The EOC team has been contacting all hospitals and health centres to ascertain the extent of the problem,” he said in a statement issued by his ministry. The EOC will ensure the ongoing

monitoring of attendance of nurses and the impact on service delivery, provide central direction and guidance to the Regional Health Authorities and service delivery points and determine the nature of the intervention that may be required. It will also maintain close contact with all service delivery points including Regional Health Authorities, Parish Health Departments, Hospitals and Health Centres, oversee the redeployment of staff if needed based on the emerging situation, and periodically advise the public of measures being taken and of any changes to service delivery. For his efforts on religious tolerance and defending the Creole language, the Haitian government posthumously made Beauvoir an officer of the national order of Honour and Merit.

Haiti pays tribute to late voodoo chief OFFICIALS and dignitaries representing all of Haiti’s different religions paid tribute to the “rare unifying genius” of Max Gesner Beauvoir, the supreme leader of the voodoo faith. Beauvoir, trained in the United States and France as a chemist, dedicated his life to defending Haiti’s voodoo culture and community. He died on Saturday at the age of 79. “He was a brave man who fought for respect, tolerance, and honor of our ancestral values,” said Roman Catholic Bishop Pierre-Andre Dumas. Dumas lamented the fact that voodoo “has long been misunderstood, stigmatised and demonised.” Beauvoir worked hard to fix that, countering negative stereotypes and explaining the religion to foreigners, including opening the religion’s temple to the public during important religious ceremonies. Although voodoo, brought to

Haiti by African slaves, has always been part of the country’s culture, it was banned during French colonial rule in the 17th and 18th centuries and only recognized as an official religion by the government in 2003. While it incorporates elements of other religious beliefs, including Catholicism, voodoo has been historically attacked by many Catholics. More recently, it has been the target of some Protestant churches and Evangelical preachers. For his efforts on religious tolerance and defending the Creole language, the Haitian government posthumously made Beauvoir an officer of the national order of Honour and Merit. After the 2010 earthquake, which killed more than 200,000 people in Haiti, Beauvoir co-founded the Religions for Peace interfaith group that has repeatedly served as mediator in the electoral crises that have paralysed the country’s government.

Cayman Islands: Man charged for gross indecency with five-year-old Bail was withheld on Monday for a 25-year-old air-conditioner repairman charged with two counts of gross indecency involving a 5-year-old girl. The man was working in the child’s home last week when the alleged offenses occurred, the Summary Court heard. Senior Crown counsel Tanya Lobban told Magistrate Valdis Foldats that the girl was home with her mother and a nanny and had gone to her bedroom to change her clothes. The defendant was working on an A/C unit in the girl’s room. The court

heard that the man asked the child if they could play a game. The game involved the touching of her private parts, Ms. Lobban said. When the nanny approached the room, the man jumped up on his ladder as if he was working. The child immediately told the nanny what had happened and she in turn told the girl’s mother, who called police, the court heard. The mother’s car was blocking the man’s vehicle, so he was unable to leave. The man was arrested initially for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor. (Cayman Compass)

More than 2000 drop out of school each year in Jamaica Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro (right), in this file photo with Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at the alba summit earlier this year, will visit the storm-hit island over the weekend.

Venezuela promises 300 homes for Dominica storm victims VENEZUELA’S president Nicolás Maduro is due to visit Dominica this weekend as his government announced it would provide 300 houses for people affected by Tropical Storm Erika. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Dominica has accepted the offer. “The Venezuelans brought in over the weekend one such structure to be erected, because we expect the President of Venezuela to come to Dominica on Saturday where he will have the symbolic handing over of this one home and, of course, making a pronouncement on the 300 homes for those affected by Tropical Storm Erika,” he said. “We expect the first 50 homes will be here in the next couple weeks and the Ministry of Housing . . . will advise the Cabinet on where we go about erecting those homes so we are trying to move as quickly as possible.”

Skerrit made the announcement as he also disclosed that government was relocating 94 people, currently living in shelters since Erika’s rains caused flooding and landslides in some communities, to more comfortable accommodation. “We are in discussions with some private property owners, some guest houses, who all have indicated their willingness to help accommodate those residents, albeit at a cost, and the State will cover the costs associated with housing and food . . . at those guest houses. We are hoping that we can finalize the costs with two of the properties. One has been finalised in terms of what the person is demanding and what the government has agreed to pay and the two others . . . they will send us a proposal so that Cabinet would be in a position to ratify the approval of the Minister of Finance in respect to that,” he explained.

OAS supports October 25 presidential elections in Haiti The Organisation of American States (OAS) says it supports the holding of the first round of presidential elections in Haiti on October 25. It said that the director of the Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO), Gerardo De Icaza, has since travelled to the Frenchspeaking Caribbean Community country as preparations continue for the polls. The OAS said that De Icaza will hold high-level meetings with the electoral authority and political actors in Port-au-Prince in support of the holding of the upcoming elections. In addition, the Chief of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to the elections, former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim will make a preliminary visit to Haiti on September 21, during which he will be accompanied by the Deputy Chief of Mission Cristobal Dupouy.

“Moreover, to continue strengthening the electoral process ahead of the first round of voting in the presidential elections, the EOM/OAS has delivered recommendations of an operational nature based on observations during the August 9 elections to the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP),” the OAS said. At least 54 candidates are seeking to replace the outgoing President Michel Martelly, who has been ruling the island by decree since January after the parliament failed to hold scheduled elections. A number of candidates have accused the CEP of not being able to conduct free and fair elections and have been calling for the resignation of its leadership. Meanwhile, the candidates for the political party, VERITE, have endorsed a decision to withdraw from the electoral race in protest against the CEP.

JAMAICA Ministry of Education figures show that close to 2,160 students between grades eight and 10 drop out of high school each year. The figure, which represents 1.8 per cent of the grade cohort, is even higher in western Jamaica where lotto scamming is rife. There, it is three per cent. It is a situation the ministry says it is will no longer countenance as, besides rendering the students unemployable by virtue of being without academic qualification, it puts them at increased risk of social ills, among them crime and unplanned pregnancy. Speaking at this week’s Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange, Education Minister Ronald Thwaites outlined three broad initiatives through which his ministry will be seeking to curtail the problem this school year. “We are instructing our principals and our guidance counsellors, ‘Go out and go after the child!’,” he said emphatically. “We have appointed social workers in each region, and I want to multiply those appointments so

that we can have the appropriate link between the school and the home. “We’re going further to say to the police, ‘We don’t want you to arrest the parent or the child. You must come with us when we need you because it needs the full authority of the State to ensure that education is not an option. Education is, in fact, an absolute necessity for children between the ages of four and 18, and especially at those critical age groups where we know the drop outs are taking place,” Thwaites said. The minister said the list of reasons contributing to the drop out rate included students’ inability to find bus fare and lunch money, weak parental support, bullying, teenage pregnancy, limited prospects on the job market even for qualified candidates, uninteresting teaching methodologies, and the “lure of other things”, suggesting criminal get-rich-quick schemes. Conventional practice is to strike students off the register once they’ve been absent from school for four consecutive weeks, but Thwaites said that will no longer be allowed to happen.

“Minister [Peter] Bunting has statistics to say that if a young person stays in school, even if they are not achieving passes, it reduces by 40 per cent the likelihood that they are going to find themselves in a gang or in some criminal activity,” Thwaites said. Bunting is the national security minister. In terms of teenage pregnancy, Thwaites said preliminary data suggest that the number is falling. However, work is ongoing to confirm that and to ascertain what is happening to teen parents. He stressed that this is the first year the ministry has recorded the data on dropouts and said it was in tandem with the ministry’s wider scope of work. “If there’s one thing we’ve done at the ministry is that we’ve become data-driven. Education, and any enterprise, has to be data-driven. We are resolute in that because we’re not going to work on feelings, on anecdotes, on hunch anymore. Data is going to dictate our policy and our expenditure and our evaluation of each other.

USVI government files lawsuit against US oil company THE US Virgin Islands (USVI) government has filed a lawsuit charging Hess Corporation, accusing the oil company of serious violations of the territory’s law after the company abandoned operations at one of the largest gas refineries in the western hemisphere nearly a decade before its legal obligations were complete. The complaint against American integrated oil company was filed in court on Monday. The government is seeking damages of at least US$1.5 billion to cover US$150 million per year in benefits to the people of the USVI over the 10-year period from 2012 to 2022 that Hess was obligated under the law to continue operating the refinery. The damages triple under Virgin Islands law. “This is not about a business disagreement. It is about Hess breaking the law,” said Governor Kenneth Mapp. “The territory of the Virgin Islands expect that the law is followed by every entity that does business here. Hess violated the law and its obligations to the people. There are consequences to breaking the law and Hess must fulfill its legal obligations to the Territory.” The Hess oil refinery was established in the mid-1960s as a long-term commercial relationship based on mutual obligations and

The agreement, which included significant tax benefits for Hess, was enacted by the Virgin Islands legislature. The agreement was renewed most recently in 1998 with a legal obligation through 2022. John Hess, the CEO of the Hess Corporation, notified the government in January 2012 that the company would shut down the refinery within a month, violating the law that dictated

operations through 2022, a statement from the USVI government said. “As a result of the shutdown of operations at the plant, thousands of jobs were lost as well as income and other benefits for government and people of the Virgin Islands. The refinery provided more than a quarter of the private income on the island of St. Croix. In addition to the economic hardship, there were significant environmental consequences related to the plant shutdown, for which Hess was fined US$40 million. Those fines have not yet been paid,” the statement added.

Union says women receive ‘shame’ for picking careers over having children ONE of Hollywood’s leading actresses says women are looked at differently for picking business over babies. “Bring It On” star Gabrielle Union opened up to Redbook magazine about how much some women must sacrifice to make it professionally – and how it’s often met with unfair backlash. “There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger,” she told the magazine. “The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.” Union, 42, is married to NBA star Dwayne Wade, 33. She’s the stepmother to his three children, but she doesn’t have any kids of her own. The accomplished film star implied that, while it hasn’t happened yet, she wants to have children of her own with the Miami Heat guard “So far, it has not happened for us,” Union confessed. “A lot of my friends deal with this.” That said, she realises that being a mother comes with a tremendous set of challenges for working women. “The reality is that women are discriminated against in the workplace for being mothers,” Union said. “As much as there are strides

being made - you get pregnant, your career takes a hit. You can’t have a bad day.” “Don’t you dare cry at work,” she continued. “Don’t raise your voice. Especially if you’re a black woman in corporate America - now you’re ‘the angry black woman’.” The bombshell also opened up about her relationship with Wade, who she married last August.

Even though they’re nearly a decade apart in age, Union says they make it work. “I realised his friends, his teammates, were conceived when I was, like, a senior in high school,” she joked. “I was in high school at the same time as their parents! Sometimes he’ll be like, ‘Oh, my God, he’s so old!’ about someone who’s 35.”

BRITISH ventriloquist Paul Zerdin has won this year’s America’s Got Talent. The 43-year-old Londoner said he was “totally speechless” and “bowled over” to beat nine other acts in the final. Two other British acts, Stevie Starr - the Professional Regurgitator - and magician John van der Put, who performs as Piff the Magic Dragon, also made it through to the final 10. Zerdin wins $1m (£645,000) and the chance to headline his own Las Vegas show. Stammering comedian Drew Lynch was the runner-up, while Starr finished fourth. Zerdin was the early favourite to win the talent show following his performances in the initial

rounds. After his performance in the final on Tuesday, judge Howard Stern praised the ventriloquist, saying: “There’s a reason Paul breezed through every single time he came on, because he is a master at what he does. “He’s taking the art of ventriloquism to new heights.” Fellow judge and former Spice Girl Mel B added: “You’re a well polished act, you’re flawless.” Zerdin is already a successful, established performer in the UK, having appeared at the Royal Variety Performance three times since 1997. He is also no stranger to talent shows, having won ITV’s The Big, Big, Talent Show - hosted by Jonathan Ross - in 1996.

In memoir Nobel ex-secretary regrets Obama peace prize THE decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Barack Obama in 2009 failed to live up to expectations, the committee’s ex-secretary has said. In his memoir, ‘Secretary of Peace’, Geir Lundestad said the committee expected the prize to be a boost to Mr Obama. Instead, the decision was met with criticism in the US. Many argued he had not had any impact worthy of the award. Mr Obama himself said he was surprised and even some of his supporters thought it a mistake, Mr Lundestad said. The US president apparently considered not going to pick up the award in Norway’s capital, Oslo, with his staff enquiring whether other winners had skipped the ceremony. But they found that this has happened only on rare occasions, such as when dissidents were held back by their governments. “In the White House they

quickly realised that they needed to travel to Oslo,” Mr Lundestad wrote. Mr Lundestad served as the committee’s influential, but nonvoting, secretary from 1990 to 2015. He has broken with the tradition of the secretive committee, whose members rarely discuss proceedings. The book also gives other insights into the activities of the committee:

§ According to Mr Lundestad, Jonas Gahr Store, then Norway’s foreign minister, tried in 2010 to dissuade the panel from awarding the prize to a Chinese dissident, fearing it would strain the country’s relationship with Beijing. The Nobel committee ignored the warnings and honoured Liu Xiaobo.

A RUSSIAN prank caller has said he and a colleague tricked Sir Elton John into thinking President Vladimir Putin had called him to discuss gay rights. “He really believed he was talking to the people we said we were,” said Vladimir Krasnov, known as “Vovan”. Sir Elton praised Mr Putin, having earlier criticised his “isolating and prejudiced” attitude. But the Kremlin firmly denied the president had contacted the singer

and hinted the call could have been a hoax. Vovan has now admitted his involvement, telling the BBC and Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda that he made the call with his sidekick Alexei Stolyarov, known as “Lexus”. “Alexei has excellent English so he played (presidential press secretary) Dmitry Peskov and translated our conversation. And I was Vladimir Putin,” ‘the prankster told the newspaper.

‘Star Trek: Voyager’ actress charged with indecent exposure AN actress best known for “Star Trek: Voyager” was arrested on September 3. Jennifer Lien, who played Kes in the first few seasons of the “Star Trek” spinoff series, has been charged with indecent exposure. According to CNN affiliate WATE, Lien was arrested in her home in Harriman, Tennessee. Neighbor Carey Smith told WATE that Lien came by her home to comment on how Smith’s children were being raised and started using vulgar language. “All of a sudden, here come the shirt up,” said Smith. “She started flashing and, ‘Woo hoo,’ and I said, ‘And what respect is that for kids?’ There was none. And then she turned around and dropped her pants.” According to the affiliate, Lien was found naked on her couch by deputies and resisted walking to the patrol car after threatening to kill the officers. The Harriman Police Department also said that Lien has a record that includes aggravated assault, domestic assault, resisting arrest, evading arrest and reckless endangerment.

It wasn’t true. I was in Manhattan but working in a building in midtown and I was not at the Trade Center on that day,” he continued. “I don’t know why I said this. This was inexcusable. T.I. says he’s done working with Iggy IT’S official. Iggy Azalea and T.I. are no more. In an interview with Hot 97, the “Paperwork” creator said he tried to fix some of the mistakes made by Iggy, but often times she didn’t take his advice. “After the Q-Tip thing,” he said, after being asked when he decided to walk away from the Aussie rapper. If you recall, Azalea blasted the A Tribe Called Quest frontman after he kindly gave her a hip-hop history lesson last year. Afterwards, T.I. tried to repair things. “After I kind of had smoothed it over and was like ‘Okay, what was really meant to be said here is’ ... Then everything was cool and they kind of came back and undid what I just did,” he explained. “I’m a loyal partner and if I rock with you I’m going to rock with you. If we right, wrong, we’ll discuss that in the car. We going to get out of here right now, though. That’s just how I am. Right now I’m going to block the bullets, now go. Now when I say ‘Go’ [really] go. Don’t stand around and talk while I’m blocking bullets. You slowing me down,” added T.I. In addition, the 34-year-old spitter said he still has faith in Iggy, despite distancing himself from her. T.I. says

that Ms. Azalea has a lot of people on her team who run her career, and they have all the necessary tools to get her music back on track. Clearly, it’s been an uphill battle for the “Fancy” rapper, who rose to fame just as fast as she fell into obscurity. Some accused Iggy of benefitting from hip-hop culture but not respecting it or it’s elders, which seemed to hit a peak when she dissed the legendary Q-Tip. Other folks dissed her rap skills and was confused why she was so famous without having strong lyrical content. Then there was Azalea Banks, who poured her heart out to Ebro during a Hot 97 interview. In a sit-down that went pretty much viral, the Harlem MC shed tears while accusing the music industry of slighting black artists. What did Iggy say in response? Instead of trying to empathize with Banks or at least try to see any of her points, she blasted the fiery rapper and said she had a “piss-poor attitude.” That of course rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Reportedly, Iggy is currently in the studio working on her sophomore album but there’s no telling when it’ll drop. (Designntrend)

Corbyn rules out fighting for Britain to leave EU JEREMY Corbyn has said he cannot envisage the circumstances in which he would campaign against Britain staying in Europe as he battled to maintain shadow cabinet unity across a range of policy issues. In a round of television interviews following his first appearance at prime minister’s question time, Labour’s new leader sought to clarify his positions following public disagreements over welfare policy, the singing of the national anthem and Northern Ireland, as well as Europe. Asked if he could see a situation in which Labour campaigned for a British exit from the European Union if the prime minister negotiated a bad deal, Corbyn said in a BBC interview: “No, I don’t see that position because I think we are going to be working with trade unions and social groups all across Europe as well as social groups in this country. “What I was opposed to is the idea David Cameron could give to give up workers’ rights and environmental rights. Europe has an interesting twin track up until Maastricht, signed in 1992, there was a growth in the social Europe. Post-Maastricht, it has been a free market approach. I want to see something different”. Labour under Ed Miliband supported the UK’s continued membership of Europe, but Corbyn’s policy has been less clear. One former shadow cabinet member voiced concerns that “Corbyn is going to set an impossible bar for a successful negotiation and then next year when he feels stronger impose an anti-European policy. We need clarity now”.

Jeremy Corbyn has sought to clarify his positions following public disagreements over welfare policy, the singing of the national anthem and Northern Ireland, as well as Europe.

Corbyn’s media round came after a novel, and largely successful performance at PMQs, which acted as a firebreak against early criticisms over his leadership style. He asked a series of low-key questions on housing, mental health and welfare drawn from nearly 40,000 emails and suggestions sent to him by the public. “Many told me they thought prime minister’s question time was too theatrical, that parliament was out of touch and too theatrical and they wanted things done differently, but above all they wanted their voice heard in parliament,” Corbyn said. Some MPs believe voters will warm to the serious and untheatrical tone, but others feared the format would allow Cameron to evade scrutiny. The prime minister

allowed himself to be drawn into Corbyn’s format, saying the event amounted to “a more genuine exercise in asking questions and answering questions”. Corbyn also clarified his position on welfare, telling Channel 4 that he wanted the party to oppose the government’s benefits cap of £20,000 a year outside London, saying it had led to social cleansing in cities. But he accepted that welfare spending would have to be kept within the government envelope of £120bn. He said: “The policy is that we work within the total budget of £120bn. My proposal, which the party will have to discuss – and they will – is that we should not impose the current benefit cap.” But he accepted he would have to “live with it” if his opposition to the cap was rejected by the party. “I am a democrat,” he said. However, Owen Smith, the shadow work and pensions secretary, contradicted him, telling the Guardian that the question of opposing the whole benefits cap was not agreed and that it was only under review. “We remain in favour of a mechanism that allows us to have some constraints on how much families can draw down,” he said. Also on Wednesday, the shadow Northern Ireland secretary, Vernon Coaker, disassociated himself from remarks by the shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, honouring the heroism of leading figures in the IRA. Coaker has met senior figures in the Democratic Unionists party to promise a bipartisan approach will be retained despite the Irish Republican politics of Corbyn and McDonnell.

Jeb Bush wants Margaret Thatcher on $10 note US Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush has picked the UK’s former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, as his choice for the face of the $10 bill. The former Florida governor made the surprise suggestion during a televised debate for the top Republicans vying for the presidential nomination. All 11 candidates were asked who they would choose, now the US Treasury has announced plans to put a woman on the redesigned note. Mr Bush’s choice drew applause. “I would go with Ronald Reagan’s partner, Margaret Thatcher,” he said, noting it was “probably illegal” and unlikely to happen because she is not American. But he added: “A strong leader is what we need in the White House, and she certainly was a strong leader

A number of people - both migrants and police - were injured in the clashes.

Migrant crisis: UN ‘shocked’ over clashes in Hungary UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon has said he is “shocked” after Hungarian police fired tear gas and water cannon to force migrants back from its border. Mr Ban said such treatment of asylum seekers was “unacceptable”. Hundreds of migrants were involved in the clashes at the border between Hungary and Serbia on Wednesday, trying to break through a razor-wire fence. Many of them want to reach Germany, amid divisions within the European Union over how to deal with the crisis. Hungary defended its action, saying that 20 police officers were injured as migrants tried to break

through a gate, and a spokesman accused migrants of using children as “human shields”. At least two migrants were also injured, Hungarian and Serbian officials said. Hungary closed its entire border with Serbia on Tuesday after making it illegal to enter the country or damage the border fence. The country’s courts have started fasttrack trials of arrested migrants. More than 200,000 people have already crossed into Hungary this year to enter the EU’s Schengen zone, which normally allows people to travel between member countries without restrictions.

South Carolina has the highest rate of women murdered by men in the country, a new study shows. The southeastern state saw 57 female homicides in 2013, the most recent year for which data is available, according to the Violence Policy Center. Its rate of 2.32 per 100,000 women was more than double the national average. The shocking statistics, released Tuesday, come ahead of national Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. “Women are dying every day as a result of domestic violence, and our state and federal laws are insufficient

in the face of this crisis,” VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand said. More than 1,600 women across the nation were killed by male offenders in 2013, according to the study, which culled data from the FBI’s supplementary homicide report. The majority of the victims — 94 percent — were murdered by someone they knew. More than half of them were the killers’ spouses, exwives or girlfriends. The most common weapon used was a gun, said Julia Wyman, executive director of States United to Prevent Gun Violence.

World News Giant snakes slither into toilets in Australia YOU can’t flush away these fears. Giant snakes have been somehow slithering their way into toilets in Australia, shocking photos show, as scientists say they’ve discovered a highly venomous new species in the country. Snake catcher Elliot Budd fished out a 10-foot python out of a toilet in a Townsville basement late last week, posting several images of the massive reptile coiled up inside the porcelain throne to Facebook. “I hoped my days pulling snakes out of toilets were over,” Budd wrote, adding that the carpet python “thought he found the perfect place to cool down.” “Another large carpet python in a toilet in North Ward,” the 26-year-old added. “Needless to say I had a good shower when I got home.” The sneaky serpent, which is harmless and a familiar sight to Australian locals, tried escaping down the toilet when Budd reached his hands in to grab it. “He decided to be difficult and went down the toilet through the u-bend,” Budd said. “We couldn’t unbolt the toilet so I just had to hold onto him for a while until he relaxed and came out on his own accord.” The python was released to a “suitable habitat” outdoors, Budd

Zimbabwean President Mugabe reads wrong speech ZIMBABWEANS generally don’t laugh or get excited about President Robert Mugabe’s speeches, given the level of poverty and reported human rights abuses in the southern African country. But an unprecedented slip-up in a speech by the 91-year-old leader on Tuesday has changed the mix. Instead of a speech officially opening Parliament, Mugabe read his State of the Nation Address, which he had already delivered on August 25. After the incident, his spokesman George Charamba issued a statement saying: “There has been a mix-up of speeches resulting in a situation where His Excellency the President delivered the wrong speech. “The mix-up happened in his secretarial office therefore the delivery in Parliament should be set aside. The error is sincerely regretted and corrective measures are being considered.” But commenters on social media would not let it go that easily.

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, seen in a photo from 2013, will turn 92 in February.

“What if Mugabe had been given a speech about his resignation? We could be far by now,” reads a message from Tomaz Madhuku he says he got from a WhatsApp group he belongs to. Jonathan Moyo, former minister of information, struggled to defend his boss. He said U.S. President Barack Obama had had the same thing happen to him.

Chile quake triggers mass evacuation and high waves ONE million people have been evacuated in Chile after a powerful earthquake hit the country’s central region. At least eight people died when the 8.3-magnitude quake hit. One person is still missing. Residents of Illapel, near the quake’s epicentre, fled into the streets in terror as their homes began to sway. In the coastal town of Coquimbo, waves of 4.7m (15ft) hit the shore. A tsunami alert was issued for the entire Chilean coast but has since been lifted. Tsunami waves also hit the coast further north and south of the quake’s epicentre, with waves half a metre higher than usual as far north as La Punta. The quake lasted for more than three minutes and there have been dozens of aftershocks. Gloria Navarro, who lives in the coastal town of La Serena, said people were “running in all directions”. Maria Angelica Leiva from Navidad, also on the coast, described how she fled her home. “It’s been awful. We ran out of the house with our grandchildren and now we are on a hill hoping it will be over soon,” she told the Reuters news agency. “It is all very dark, and we just hope the sea hasn’t reached our house,” she added. Officials said 1,800 people in Illapel were left without drinking water.

The city of Illapel was among the worst hit

Electricity providers said hundreds of thousands of their clients in the worst-affected Coquimbo region had no power. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremor struck off the coast of Coquimbo, 46km (29 miles) west of the city of Illapel at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT). The USGS said it was at a depth of 25km, while Chilean seismologists calculated its depth at 11km. The quake that rocked Chile on Wednesday was five times more energetic than the one that devastated Nepal back in April. And yet the early indications are that the death toll will be a fraction (perhaps a thousandth) of what it was in the Himalayan nation. In large part, this is simply down to preparedness. This was

Chile’s third massive quake in five years; the region all too frequently experiences magnitude 8 events. As a consequence, the building codes are strict and generally well enforced. What is more, the people themselves are well versed in how to react during and after an event. It is not perfect. In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake witnessed failings on the part of the monitoring network and the system for alerting people to the imminent tsunami threat. Since then, the Chilean government has spent millions upgrading the country’s seismic network of sensors, and made improvements to telecommunications systems that share critical information and warnings.

Egypt attack: Mexico minister visits injured survivors MEXICO’S foreign minister has visited six survivors of an Egyptian army attack in which eight Mexican tourists were killed after being mistaken for militants. Claudia Ruiz Massieu met the survivors in hospital in Cairo, and said they were doing well. She called for a thorough investigation into the incident, which happened on Sunday in Egypt’s western desert. The exact circumstances of the attack remain unclear. A Egyptian prosecutor has issued an order banning journalists from reporting details of the investigation now taking place. Egypt says its forces had been pursuing Islamic militants in the Western Desert and mistook the Mexican tourists for the militants. It has apologised, but has insisted the group were in a restricted area. Local sources deny the claim. Miller tops list of Bahamian athletes in IAAF rankings Lydia Ko of New Zealand holds the trophy aloft after winning the Evian Championship in France.

Ko makes history after stunning final round of 63 NEW Zealand’s Lydia Ko rewrote the golfing record books again by becoming the youngest winner of a women’s major after a triumphant final round of 63 to claim the Evian Championship in France Sunday. Ko finished on 16-underpar 268 -- six shots clear of American Lexi Thompson with China’s Feng Shanshan in third place -- a further two strokes adrift. It was a dominant display from Ko, who aged 18 years and 142 days, takes the record from American Morgan Pressel, who was 171 days

older when winning the Kraft Nabisco back in 2007. Pressel had started the final round tied with Ko on eight under -- two shots adrift of overnight leader Mi-Hyang Lee -- but slumped to a final round 75 as her old record was broken. “I can leave my name a little bit in the golf history books,” said Ko after sealing her victory. South Korea’s Lee also suffered a last day hiccup to card a three-over 74 as the final round firmly belonged to New Zealand’s remarkable teenage prodigy Ko.

Eugenio Figueredo is accused of receiving bribes worth millions of dollars relating to Copa America tournaments, Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice said.

FIFA bribery suspect Figueredo faces extradition to US SWITZERLAND says it has approved the extradition of a Uruguayan football official accused of taking bribes. Eugenio Figueredo was one of seven officials with FIFA, world football’s governing body, who were arrested in Zurich on 27 May. He is accused of receiving bribes worth millions of dollars relating to Copa America tournaments, Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice said. He has 30 days to appeal against his extradition to the US. Mr Figueredo is a former vice-president of the

South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and was a vice-president of FIFA. The Swiss statement said he is accused of: § Taking bribes from a Uruguayan sports marketing company over the sale of marketing rights to the Copa America tournaments in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2023 § Gaining US citizenship “fraudulently by submitting forged medical reports in 2005 and 2006” Mr Figueredo had earlier contested attempts to extradite him.

WITH the completion of the IAAF Diamond League grand finale over the weekend in Brussels, Belgium, the track and field season ending rankings have been released with some Bahamians sitting in pretty good positions. Heading the list is IAAF World Championship silver medallist Shaunae Miller, who ended up in that same position in the standings with a personal best of 49.67 seconds to trail American world champion Allyson Felix, who posted the world’s fastest time of 49.26. Miller has also recorded times of 49.92, 50.12 and 50.17, all ranked in the top 10. Christine Amertil, the veteran quarter-miler who ran extremely well on the women’s 4 x 400 metre relay this year, had the next best showing by a Bahamian with

May 9. She also did 22.50 in Clermont, Florida, on April 18. Anthonique Strachan, before she got a season ending injury, was 32nd in 22.69 in Doha, Qatar, on May 15. The highest ranked male is

IAAF World Championship bronze medallist Jeffery Gibson, who was fifth overall after he lowered his national record to 48.17 in the men’s 400m hurdles in Beijing. Gibson, by the way, lowered his national record four times this year with times of 48.37, 48.51 and 48.72. The only other Bahamian to make the top 100 on the list was Patrick Bodie with a time of 49.63 that was done on April 3 in Gainesville, Florida. The men’s 400m had the most activity with Stephen Gardiner leading the parade in eighth place in his new national record of 44.27 that was set at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ National Open Track and Field Championships at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium on July 26

Forbes: Cowboys by far most valuable NFL franchise, NFL values go way up THE Dallas Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl in a long time, but they’re an unstoppable dynasty in one important competition: franchise value. Nobody comes close to the Cowboys in terms of how much money they’re worth. Not among NFL teams, and not among any sports team in the world. Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys are worth $4 billion,

according to Forbes’ latest list. That’s almost $750 million more than any other sports team in the world. Real Madrid came in second at $3.26 billion, according to Forbes. The New England Patriots are second among NFL teams and tied for third with the New York Yankees among all sports teams, at $3.2 billion. Last year the Cowboys generated

The Dallas Cowboys are worth $4B, almost $750M more than Real Madrid, which comes in second.

$620 million in revenue, a record for a U.S. sports team, Forbes said. The Cowboys haven’t won a championship on the field since the 1995 season, but Dallas has been the top NFL team on Forbes’

franchise value list for nine straight years. So make fun of Jones all you wish, but he’s winning on the scoreboard a lot of owners care deeply about. And it’s an absolute blowout victory, too.

Dwayne Wade Foundation donates sneakers to Marjorie Basden basketball team THE Dwayne Wade Foundation through logistical help from Beaches made a donation of over a dozen Dwayne Wade sneakers to South Caicos Marjorie Basden High School basketball team this week. Head coach of the team and Sports Development Officer of South Caicos Camiko Lewis thanked the NBA player (who was not present) for his generous donation and promised that the youngsters will make full use of the sneakers. Historically the Marjorie Basden Knights have been a powerhouse in high school basketball in the TCI.

Digicel NBA Youth Jumpstart Basketball Clinic:

Five players to represent TCI in T&T Elite Camp OF the 50 young basketball players who competed in a three-day Digicel NBA Youth Jumpstart Basketball Clinic this week, five have been selected to represent the Turks and Caicos Islands at an Elite Camp from next Thursday in Trinidad and Tobago. The high school players selected were: Wilkins Sylvain, Shadarno Clarke, Karl Shand Jr., Brendan Handfield and Willcan Seymour. A release from Digicel stated that the clinic, which concluded on Tuesday at the Graceway Sports Centre in Providenciales, was a huge success and pointed to the partnership between the NBA and Digicel as “the first of its kind in the Turks and Caicos”. On the court, the young players were put through gruelling drills and practice games, which really improved their playing abilities. Digicel Head of Marketing, Trina Adams, said: “This basketball clinic was an amazing experience and a wonderful opportunity, not just for the players and local coaches but for

us at Digicel as well. Our partnership with the NBA has created something special for our youth.” Adams went on to say: “All fifty (50) players worked extremely hard and we wish we could send all but we had to select only the five best in the end. We know the guys will do well in Trinidad, and possibly move on to the final NBA camp in the US. Hopefully this inspires other youth to train and prepare for the possibility of next year.” Christopher Ebersole and Adrian Alveraz, senior coordinators and coaches with the NBA’s International Basketball Operations, hosted the clinic and remarked that it was an awesome experience being in the TCI for the first time and conducting the first camp of its kind. Both coaches said that they definitely want the Digicel NBA partnership to continue for next year and beyond. According to local coaches from the Provo Amateur Basketball Association (PABA) and the Rising Stars Basketball Club, who volunteered for coaching training

and to assist with the camp, “it was a tough few days but a great experience”. At the end of the camp Digicel donated all of the NBA certified equipment, including balls and other items, to both basketball organisations. This will ensure that local players continue to have access to the best equipment beyond the camp. The Turks and Caicos Islands are one of six nations that were selected to host clinics. The top eight players from the Elite Camp in Trinidad, as determined by NBA Coaches and an NBA legend, will have the opportunity to attend an NBA game in the U.S, tour an NBA arena and be put through their paces at an NBA facility. The Elite Camp and camper trip to the U.S. to attend an NBA game will be shared with Digicel customers online, digitally and through mobile and will be aired on Digicel Sportsmax, which brings NBA fans closer to their favourite teams through its live coverage of the NBA season, which tips off Oct. 27.

Ifeanyi Otuonye, who copped a bronze medal in August at the NACAC Senior Championships, was outstanding this season.

Otuonye gets IAAF rankings – 101 in legal jump and 32nd in wind assisted TCI’S national long jumper Ifeanyi Otuonye’s personal best this year has placed him just outside the top 100 by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), in its end of season rankings. Our best long jumper was tied with eight other jumpers from around the world at 101 for his 7.87M jump in late May, which is the national record of the TCI. In the wind-assisted category the Kansas State University student shared the 32nd spot with

US jumper Ventavius Sears after both had made 7.98M jumps. Otuonye’s jump made in early May at the Rock Chalk Classic had+2.7 wind assistance. The former Munro College student knocked at the door this season after making several jumps over 25 feet. In practice he jumped over 8M, while in August he copped a bronze medal (7.71M) in the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

HAB Group/TCICA T20 Cricket League:

Bodhinayake’s unbeaten ton leads Super Kings to final IF he had a few overs to spare Nuwan Bodhinayake could have reclaimed his most runs record. At the end of their allotted 20 overs the wicketkeeping batsman had slammed his way to an unbeaten 140, 25 runs short of Garvin Bruno’s national record. Despite not breaking the national record, the Sri Lankan born lefthanded batsman did enough to propel his current club team, the Quality Super Kings, to a surprising victory over one of the favourites for the title this year, Mitsubishi Electric (Rugby team). The rugby players were unstoppable early in the league and were undefeated in their first five

games, but they had no answers for the former Sri Lankan club player. The Super Kings won the toss in semi-final one at the Downtown Ball Park last Sunday and with Bodhinayake going all guns blazing, they were able to race to 221-3. The left handed opener smashed 122 of his 140 unbeaten runs for boundaries. He hit 14 fours and 11 sixes in his innings off 67 balls. One of his sixes went onto the roof of the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex. The score was his third highest in T20 cricket and the fourth highest overall for all local club cricketers (Only Bruno with his 165 has done better). The national cricketer Bodhinayake now has four centuries

Michael Jordan is now worth $1B.

Jordan made more money in 2014 than in his entire NBA career MICHAEL Jordan made a ridiculous amount of money in his basketball career for NBA sides Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards, but it pales in significance to his earning power today. According to an infographic compiled by Lisa Overton from PBS, Jordan made $94 million in a decade and a half as a player. In 2014 alone, he netted a cool $100 million. Jordan’s affiliation with Nike and the exponential growth of his brand Air Jordan officially made him the highest-paid retired athlete in the world last year. When Jordan, now 52, first entered the NBA as a No. 3 draft pick for the Bulls in 1984, he was on a salary of less than $US1 million, but year

on year, his pay packet bulged - he eventually finished earning $US33 million in 1997 before the salary cap was implemented. His last game was in 2003. Off the court, Jordan revolutionised not only the shoe industry, but the idea that athletes could earn a fortune by endorsing companies and their products. His relationship with Nike helped grow the brand above the rest of the pack to become the largest and most powerful athleticwear company on the planet, creating an unprecedented amount of revenue. In March, Jordan came in at 1741st on Forbes magazine’s annual list of the world’s richest people, with a $US1 billion net worth. (SMH)

in the shortest format of the game (130, 140, 147 and 150), an unmatched feat. Naga Kutalingam was next on the scoreboard with 28 runs (3X4s and 1X6). Needing to score at 11.1 runs per over, Mitsubishi Electric fell 63 runs short after they were restricted to 158-8. Dane Ritchie scored 47 (4X6s), while Gareth Butler added 44 (6X4s). Bowling for the Super Kings, medium pacer Robert Johnson nabbed 3-20 from four overs. The Super Kings will now await the winner of this Sunday’s second semi-final clash between powerhouse Police and Kishco.

Nuwan Bodhinayake scored 140 unbeaten runs to lead the Super Kings to the T20 cricket league final.

There were a few changes from the 2014 executive body. Joe Ryan stepped down as male captain. He

was replaced by Simon Taylor. Taylor vacated his position of social secretary, which was filled by Levardo Talbot. Both boys and girls with little or no experience from ages 6-15 can join the programme. There will be under-8s and under-12s in action from 10:30h to 11:30h while the U-15 boys and girls will take to the field from 11:30h to 12:30h.
