TCIG launches all-out war on crime

– Premier unveils sweeping reforms and pledges justice

In the face of mounting public concern and a series of shocking murders, the Turks and Caicos Islands Government has announced a comprehensive and robust strategy to tackle the escalating crime crisis.

Premier Charles Washington Misick, in an impassioned address to the nation from his office in Providenciales on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, outlined a series of immediate and long-term measures aimed at restoring peace and security to the islands.

Immediate actions

The Premier informed reporters that the government has approved $500,000 in emergency funding to bring in specialised tactical police units from across the Caribbean.

These highly trained officers will provide critical expertise and manpower to support the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF).

An additional $100,000 has been allocated to TCI Crimestoppers to bolster community engagement and encourage anonymous tips through rewards.

Coupled with this, the government is strengthening collaboration with regional allies through CARICOM’s Council for National Security and Law Enforcement (CONSLE) to access additional resources and expertise.

LONG-TERM STRATEGIES

Misick further revealed that the government is implementing a proven crime-fighting strategy

known as “focused deterrence,” which targets the small percentage of offenders responsible for the majority of violent crimes. This approach combines relentless enforcement with pathways to reform and rehabilitation.

Turning his attention to the RTCIPF, Misick said the government is committed to fostering upward mobility within the police force and encouraging TC Islanders to take on leadership roles.

“My government recognises that crime is a home-grown problem, and it requires a homegrown solution.

“We are committed to fostering upward mobility within the police force, encouraging TCIslanders to take on leadership roles.

“To support this, we are introducing annual Law Enforcement Scholarships to

provide officers with advanced training and education. Additionally, my government is exploring overseas secondment opportunities for local officers and members of the judiciary.

“These placements will allow our personnel to gain international experience and training, ensuring they remain one step ahead of evolving criminal tactics.

“This investment in our people is about building capacity, enhancing expertise, and ensuring that our police force and judiciary are prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow”, he stressed.

Premier Misick emphasised his government’s unwavering

commitment to tackling the crime crisis, stating, “These heinous acts are unacceptable, and let me assure you: my government will not rest until justice is served and peace is restored to every street, every home, and every corner of our nation.”

“Over the last four years, my government has made unprecedented investments in law enforcement and the judiciary— $147m to date, including $125m allocated specifically to the police force”, he added.

POLICE INVESTMENTS

The territory’s leader further highlighted significant investments made in law enforcement since 2021.

He informed that the police force has grown from 323 officers to 383, with plans to add 75 more positions in the upcoming budget, while cumulative salary increases of 20% and doubled overtime budgets have been implemented to support and motivate officers.

Investments were also in CCTV cameras, armoured vehicles, digital forensics tools, radar systems, patrol boats, and a mobile police station have enhanced the force’s capabilities.

“Crime is not just a government issue—it’s everybody’s business. My government cannot win this fight alone. We need every citizen, every community, and every sector to play their part.

“To our private sector partners, I invite you to join us in supporting initiatives like the Crimestoppers reward programme. Together, we can incentivize the community to stand up against crime.”

The Premier also called on religious and community leaders to help unite communities and foster a sense of peace while providing spiritual guidance that can strengthen the nation’s resolve.

He said: “To those who doubt our resolve, let me say this: My government has delivered results before, and we will deliver them again.

“We are breaking the back of serious crime through stronger laws, longer sentences for gun and gang crimes, and expanded police powers to investigate, detain, and disrupt criminal activity.

“We have created specialised units to fight gangs, drugs, and guns, and we will continue to upgrade our systems and resources to stay ahead of criminals”, Misick stressed.

Premier Misick stressed that the fight against crime requires collective action, urging citizens, community leaders, and the private sector to play their part by reporting information, supporting law enforcement, and fostering peace and unity.

Messam appointed as Bahamas Honorary Consul to TCI

Mrs Jenesta Messam was appointed Honorary Consul of The Bahamas to the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday.

Mrs Messam, who previously served as TCI’s Chief Protocol Officer received her letters of appointment from Director General HE Jerusa Ali in a brief ceremony attended by HC Messam’s Family and Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs Staff.

According to information from the Minister of the Bahamas, the two neighbours shared history and heritage dating back “over two centuries ago when Great Britain governed the Islands as a part of The Bahamas until Bahamian independence in 1973 when TCI remained a British Overseas Territory. Despite the change in governance, The Bahamas retains close familial and cultural ties with our neighbour to the south.”

In her role as Honorary Consul, Mrs Messam will ensure the well-

RTCIPF and DEA expand strategic partnership to aid crime fighting

In a move to strengthen security and combat criminal activities, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have expanded their strategic partnership.

This collaboration has led to advanced tactical training for RTCIPF officers and a reinforced commitment to tackling crime in the region.

RTCIPF’s Tactical Unit officers recently completed an intensive four-day helicopter tactical rescue specialist training programme in the Bahamas, the force revealed in a statement.

Led by DEA agents and their Tactical Helicopter Section, the training focused on rapid deployment from helicopters, a critical skill for addressing challenges in the remote and difficult-to-access areas of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

STRENGTHENING

OPERATIONAL CAPACITY

Superintendent Jason James, head of the RTCIPF Tactical Unit,

emphasised the significance of this initiative: “This collaboration demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our communities. The helicopter fast rope specialist training has enabled our officers to respond swiftly and effectively to criminal threats, no matter where they arise across the TCI.”

The partnership, conducted under Operation BAT, aims to prevent and detect criminal activities, including drug trafficking and organised crime. It bolsters the RTCIPF’s operational capacity and fosters a multiagency approach to professional law enforcement.

DEA representatives commended the RTCIPF’s proactive measures, stating, “The Turks and Caicos Islands are a vital partner in the fight against transnational crime. Through this joint effort, we are enhancing the capability of local forces to protect their citizens and disrupt criminal networks.”

Acting Assistant Commissioner (Specialist Operations) Mat Newton acknowledged the importance of international

partnerships: “As a force, we remain dedicated to employing innovative strategies and fostering global alliances to ensure the islands’ safety.

“This is the first wave of training with the DEA and represents a key element of our fight against organised crime. Many thanks to the DEA for this opportunity”, Newton stated.

DEA’S ROLE

Amidst speculation about the DEA’s involvement in recent murder investigations, Premier Misick addressed the public, clarifying the agency’s role in the TCI.

He stated that the DEA’s primary focus remains on drug interdiction and human trafficking, and while additional resources may have been provided, the FBI and other foreign law enforcement agencies cannot operate in the TCI without permission.

The strengthened partnership between the RTCIPF and the DEA marks a significant step in enhancing the TCI’s capacity to combat complex criminal activities and maintain public safety.

SENSELESS KILLINGS

The tragic killing of two innocent people at a popular nightclub has again cast the Turks and Caicos Islands in a negative light.

When innocent lives are lost, it shakes the very foundation of our society and erodes public trust in both the police and the government.

With tourism being vital to the TCI, the killing of a tourist can severely impact the sector and territory.

As a people, we must fight not to become desensitised to the scourge of violence that is gripping these ‘Beautiful by Nature Turks and Caicos Islands’.

Although the Governor and local authorities have regularly met to discuss the crime situation, the outcomes have been disappointing and many times inconsequential.

More action needed

Talks and discussions will not get the job done!

Out of control

The violent crime situation here is absolutely out of control, and yet we get nothing but circular conversations from the Governor, the Premier and the Commissioner of Police (whomever might occupy this last position at any particular time).

Not only has this violence long terrorised the local settlements, but now we are subject to random shootings in the Grace Bay area –we can brag all we want about having some of the best beaches in the world, but it will all be for naught if people are getting shot while trying to enjoy them!

Extreme justice warranted

As a British Overseas Territory, why are we struggling to contain this unprecedented surge in crime on our own?

Many believe that the British needs to take more action and do so quickly.

A look at our recent history tells a grim tale. In 2011, TCI’s first murder took place on July 11 (the second half of the year). Within the first few days of this year, we recorded our first murder, and within a few weeks, this heinous crime.

This is compounded by a recordbreaking year for murders in 2024.

The Turks and Caicos Islands is under siege and it is NOT business as usual.

What are your thoughts?

off the streets and hold them in custody until our courts (eventually) get around to dealing with them. It is long past time that we stopped making the “civil rights” of these offenders a higher priority than we give to the lives and safety of our residents and visitors!

UK experience needed

It is not business as usual. UK GOV should send many more experienced investigators and take full advantage of the new surveillance law. The UK has decades of experience dealing successfully with terrorism, at home and abroad. Hunting down these guys is a job for the police. Engaging with them is for the regiment.

In circles

do? It seems that the entire country should be placed on a lockdown where the guns and ammunition are snuffed out. There is a leak where weapons have found an “open door” into the islands and into the wrong hands. The tragedy of a young man of stellar quality, a rare gem in this day and age was lost. Stable man, married, one child, quite a ‘contradistinction’ to the kind of men we see on the streets of the TCI today. The loss of a Cook County, Chicago, US Sheriff Deputy is equally chilling and damaging to the tourism product. A solution must be found to this trend of violence in the TCI.

Not a British issue

We need intel, which requires assets and tons of experience.

Under siege

All the talk about getting input from other Caribbean police agencies is likely to prove fruitless – doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of stupidity, particularly when the outside agencies are being brought here to assist what is a largely dis-functional domestic police force.

We are well past the time when the Governor should ask the British Government to supply us with what is known as “military aid to the civil power”. This is distinct from martial law, because the military will still be under the control of the elected government, but a contingent of professional, experienced and HIGHY VISIBLE soldiers will serve as both a deterrent to these punks who are loose on our street and as a reassurance to both our residents and our tourists that the government is FINALLY getting serious about their safety.

Furthermore, the necessary legal changes must be made so that charges of violence and gang association are immediately made ‘NON—BAILABLE’ – get these animals

In a major city in China, a man deliberately drove his vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians on New Year’s Day, killing several people and injuring others. In less than three weeks, the driver has been tried, convicted AND EXECUTED! Perhaps this is an aspect of Chinese justice that we should emulate.

There is no statement truer than “the Turks and Caicos Islands is under siege and it is NOT business as usual”. The question arises, “do the police know where the criminals and gangbangers hide”? Are they equipped to handle the issue of Crime in the TCI? It defies reason and common sense that a group of young men would go into Grace Bay and just “shoot up the place” just to get a target. It did not seem to matter to them who “got hit” and or killed in the “cross-fire”.

One may wonder about the level of care these men have for the TCI. Are they aware or care about what they are doing and where they did it, Grace Bay, the heart of the tourism product, immediately threatens the economic viability of the TCI as a place to visit?

Can this issue, the spiralling crime rate be addressed by proper policing? Will technology and new equipment enable immediate responses? Should the government now take away a few more liberties and mandate scanners and detection devices for public places such as nightclubs, food stores, etc? What do we

A few issues need to be clarified here. The issues are entirely local. There is the dubious perception by many that the Governor alone is responsible for the police and crime fighting. Under current political, and constitutional arrangements in the TCI, the position is different in reality. There is an elected Minister of Finance and Premier, who forms part of the National Security Council (the “NSC”).

Meaning that the Premier as Minister of Finance, carries a “negative vote control” over the planning and budgeting for crime and the police. Meaning, that if the Minister of Finance is not pleased with what the Police, Governor and the NSC propose for crime-fighting, he can always say “No!” He can always insist at the time of the budget for more police personnel, scanners, drones, diversion patrols, vehicles, etc. This is where this government “falls down”. There is no real evidence that the Premier at any time, “placed his feet on

Two more weeks to general election, but no debate among leaders

The Turks and Caicos Islands public is clamouring for a debate among the leaders of the political parties in the run-up to elections – just two weeks away - but it appears that is not happening, as the sessions slated for January 23 and 24 have been cancelled.

On January 16, columnist, podcast host and businessman Drexwell Seymour announced that he would be hosting the Turks and Caicos Islands’ national election debate series on his podcast, on the aforementioned dates.

“We have reached out to the chairperson of all political parties inviting their participation in this highly anticipated event. Our goal is to provide voters with the information they need to make informed decisions.”

However, on Thursday, January

23, he announced that the debates had been cancelled because one of the political parties did not respond to the invitation.

The parties invited were the Progressive National Party (PNP), the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA).

Late Thursday, the PNP publicly stated that they were not the

the ground” and demanded a crime policy that suited the realities that the people face “on the ground”. A Premier in touch with the people and the realities that people face would be more responsive to actual needs. That response would have been found in the budget.

Even so, as crime increased since the last budget, greater financial resources should have been diverted ‘from certain areas’ and on to crime fighting. It is really a Turks & Caicos government issue and it must be treated as such by the elected government and civil society alike. Likewise, the “previous uplift of $3.5m and additional monies, cannot fit the realities on the ground and the issues that people face.

There is a vital disconnect. It seems that the Government and law enforcement are all “reacting” to the situation on the ground.

Priorities

A lot could be said about the budget and the diversion of funds from that budget. Your budget is where your heart is and where your priorities lie. This current PNP Government sits on nearly a $500m budget. Yet they are now scrambling to move more funds to crime fighting “after” the tragic events at the Aziza Lounge, Grace Bay Road this past weekend.

The alleged gift of significant millions to a local resort that should be taking care of itself, exposes the policy gap in spending priorities. The Premier’s huge salary package is also part of this spending and policy gap.

The focus of the government is needed to spend the right amount of monies on crime fighting. With the right focus, they could place pressure on the UK, CARICOM, and the US to send in more aid and much earlier than now. The tardy response

party that did not respond to the invitation, affirming their desire to speak to the issues with the other party leaders.

That public statement read:

“The Progressive National Party is thankful to the Drexwell Seymour Show for providing a much-needed platform for national debates.

“The PNP received an official invitation on January 9th, and sent

by the Government has exposed negative images of the islands. This is not good for the tourism product or the future of the TCI.

British could do more

All kinds of arguments can be made about who is responsible for what. The British are the real issue in some circumstances and the effort between the elected government and the British government must be “joint”. With a ‘local Police Commissioner’ be it from any part of the Caribbean region; TCI, Bahamas or the wider Caribbean, the right high command would know what to do.

The elected government is mandated to develop a list of policy and operational needs to enable the police to effectively fight crime. The right message, and policy based on what the needs are, could be made to the UK to send in equipment, technologies and yes, money.

In making policy we must be aware that we are dealing with a new generation and demographic and those realities must reflect what’s budgeted and implemented for fighting crime. These “kids today, really don’t care”.

It seems like this new generation is a lost grouping, doing what they like; growing up without a moral compass. No church, Sunday school, just the “evil social media and popular culture”. This is new phenomenon for the TCI and the world. A kind of prophetic “falling away” from decency, morals and “natural affection”.

Kids today are really different and most are reared by the culture, the violence found in video games. 2011 presents a different universe than what we have today. They are without natural affection and will kill in sensitive public places caring not about the consequences.

an acceptance of the invitation on January 10th, preparing for the suggested dates of January 23rd and 24th accordingly.

“On January 16th, we received a communication from the Drexwell Seymour Show reassuring us that our communication was noted, but there was no response from the other major party.

“Today, we received notification that the debates were cancelled.”

The party said it regrets that this is the outcome as they were anticipating the opportunity to engage in a robust exchange of ideas and demonstrate to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands their “commitment to transparency and accountability”.

“It is unfortunate that the other major party chose not to participate,” they stated, adding, “While others avoid public scrutiny, the Progressive National Party will continue to lead with vision, action, and courage.”

However, in a post to his personal Facebook page, the PDM leader shared that he was ready for the debate.

“It is very disappointing for me to see that the political debates being cancelled. In my direct conversation with the organisers, I told them, ‘Oh yes, I can’t wait to get the premier up on stage for a live debate, because no speaker will be there to save him, and he should bring his entire team to face me’.

“I had also suggested that the debates be held either on a

Wednesday or Thursday night, as the Fridays are rally nights. Let’s get it on-I’m ready.”

Residents shared their disappointment via Seymour’s page that the highly anticipated debates were called off.

One commenter wrote: “This is really unfair to those who responded. It’s a small place and no, you may not want to embarrass anyone, but this is not personal. It’s the country’s politics and we’ve been asking for a debate so the people should have a right to know who was not willing to debate.”

Another suggested: “You should proceed with the parties that have confirmed. I recall the 2016 debates where the PDM did not participate but the debate went on. The electorate needs an opportunity to hear from candidates regarding the major issues; not the hype and rhetoric that usually comes from rally stages. If a party doesn’t want to participate in a debate on the issues in 2025 then they don’t deserve an opportunity to lead.”

Winston McLaughlin, the only candidate on the PDA ticket this election cycle, made it clear that he was ready for the debate.

Commenting on Seymour’s page, he stated: “I, Winston Samuel MCLAUGHLIN, am ready; many would only appreciate the RTC [Radio Turks & Caicos] for different reasons; a debate with a neutral moderator will show their weaknesses and highlight the job that they are bidding for is wrong for them.”

PDM refutes claims regarding national election debate

The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) strongly refutes the recent claims made by the PNP suggesting that the PDM did not confirm its participation in the National Elections Debate. This statement is categorically false.

The Hon. Edwin Astwood, Leader of the PDM, personally spoke with Mr. Drexell Seymour, organiser of the event, expressing his enthusiasm to engage in a debate with the Premier and his colleagues.

This false claim by the PNP, combined with the organiser’s statements lacking clarity on which political party declined to participate in the debates, leaves us with no option but to question the transparency and integrity of the process through which these debates were organised.

The PDM remains steadfast in its mission to engage with the people

of the Turks and Caicos Islands through direct and meaningful dialogue.

We will continue to communicate directly with voters through all available media channels and, most importantly, in-person visits to communities across the nation. These interactions allow us to address concerns and share our transformative policies aimed at improving the lives of all Turks and Caicos Islanders.

We invite all citizens to tune in to the PDM Manifesto Launch on Friday, January 24th, 2025, at 11:00 AM on our social media platforms. This will be a pivotal moment as we present our vision for a brighter, stronger future for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The PDM remains committed to transparent, accountable leadership because Your Future is Our Priority.

Premier and PNP Leader, Hon Charles W. Misick and Leader of the PDM and the Opposition, Hon Edwin Astwood

“Be Mindful”, Governor cautions campaigning political leaders – following false claims from both sides

As the silly season kicks into full swing, the mud-slinging has begun, prompting Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam to remind political leaders and candidates to “be mindful”.

The Governor issued a statement this past Thursday, January 23, cautioning the leaders of the PNP and the PDM following inflammatory remarks made by them both in the past week during their respective political rallies.

PDM leader, Hon Edwin Astwood officially lodged his complaint with the Governor –who has constitutional oversight to ensure the integrity of the electoral process - on Wednesday.

The party leader first took to social media to air his grievances, alleging that at a January 18 rally, PNP leader and Premier, Hon. Charles W. Misick accused his party of planning to set the dumpsite on fire the night before the elections – set for February 7.

In her statement on the matter, the Governor said this claim was confirmed by the Premier when

asked.

“I raised the matter with the Hon Premier today (Thursday), who confirmed he did make those comments further to information that had been passed to him.

Although not his intention, he acknowledged that such commentary has the potential to incite disorder or criminality.

“He has undertaken to clarify his comments at the next public

opportunity to mitigate such risks and separately, to ensure the information has been reported appropriately to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force,” the governor disclosed.

The Opposition leader has stated that he too has made a report to the Police.

According to the Governor, she also confirmed with the PDM leader concerns raised about his own commentary made in the immediate aftermath of the recent fatal shootings, at a rally on January 18.

She said the party leader acknowledged the potential for such commentary to be misconstrued and the need to be mindful.

“In this heightened climate, I remind everyone of the importance of maintaining public standards of accountability and their responsibilities in safeguarding the safety of our communities,” the governor cautioned.

Since their electoral candidates were nominated a week ago, the two major political parties have been going full throttle in the race

to the February 7 general election –an event that many believe will be a pivotal moment in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The territory has been gripped in a climate of fear and violence for an entire year – a never before seen occurrence in its historywith the opposition constantly accusing the sitting government of negligence and incompetence, while proffering their own solutions to the problems facing the nation.

The voting public of the Turks and Caicos Islands has historically been resolute when going to the polls, choosing the party they believe can address the issues affecting the territory at the time their votes are cast.

This election season, those problems are crime and the skyhigh cost of living.

While the PNP enjoyed an easy slide to victory in the 2021 elections – 14-1 – it is very unlikely they will come anywhere near such a victory in the upcoming election, given the prevailing climate of fear and discontent that permeates the country under their rule.

PDM leader accuses Premier of peddling lies at political rally

– reports made to police and governor

In an urgent national address this week, the Leader of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), Hon Edwin Astwood, accused the Premier of blatantly deceiving the public and misusing his position for political gain.

In a solemn address on Wednesday, January 22, the party leader explained: “At a PNP rally held in Wheeland on January 18, 2025, the Premier accused the PDM of planning to set the dump on fire the night the night before elections, a baseless and irresponsible claim.”

He said the statement is not only “a desperate act of a weak and failing leader, but it is also a blatant attempt to sow fear and division amongst our people”.

Astwood accuses the Premier of deception and cowardice, claiming that Premier Charles W. Misick has failed to address the issues confronting the nation, and instead has chosen to sling false accusations rather than unite the

country.

“In response, I have written to the acting Commissioner of Police demanding a full investigation into these claims, and I have called upon Her Excellency the Governor to condemn this reckless conduct.

“We are not going to let this go,” Astwood said.

He stated that the Governor has the responsibility to take action on this matter and called on the Premier to immediately withdraw

his statement and apologise to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands for his “dangerous rhetoric”.

Astwood affirmed that this is not just about politics, it is about the safety and security of the TCI.

“The Premier’s words are a gross misuse of his office, potentially inciting retaliation or violence at a time when crime and violence have spiralled out of control. With double homicides wrecking our

communities, the Premier chose to deflect and deceive rather than address the real challenges facing the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

He pointed to the rising prices of basic necessities, barely functioning government services and crime as areas the Premier should direct his attention to.

“Instead, he chooses to deflect and deceive”.

“Where is the Premier’s leadership on crime and violence,

why is he silent on the unending bloodshed that has made our people prisoners in their own homes? Instead of real solutions, he chooses to blatantly lie on the political platform, undermining our democracy and insulting the intelligence of every voter in the country,” Astwood accuses.

“This is not the behaviour of a strong leader; it is the behaviour of a desperate man who knows his time is up,” he chastised.

Indiscriminate shooting resulted in tourist’s death

A tranquil Caribbean getaway turned into a scene of unimaginable horror as gunfire erupted at a popular restaurant and nightclub in the Turks and Caicos Islands, leaving two innocent lives tragically extinguished and a community reeling from the shockwaves of senseless violence.

Shamone Duncan, a 50-yearold Cook County Sheriff’s deputy from Chicago, was celebrating her sister’s birthday on the idyllic island when her life was abruptly cut short.

Duncan, a 21-year veteran of law enforcement, was enjoying a rooftop dinner at the Aziza Restaurant & Lounge in Grace Bay when an argument broke out downstairs, escalating into a hail of bullets that shattered the peaceful night.

“People started yelling, telling people to get down,” Duncan’s

son, Shamon Payton, recounted the harrowing scene in an interview with ABC 7 Chicago News.

“Everybody got down, and my mom got up. And then, she got hit”, he said with tears streaming down his face.

Duncan’s sisters, Sharaye Baugh and Eshawn Spencer, who were also on the vacation, witnessed the horrifying moment their sister fell victim to the indiscriminate gunfire.

“She probably stood up, what we believe, is because she’s a Cook County Sheriff [deputy],” Spencer speculated, suggesting that Duncan’s instincts as a law enforcement officer may have tragically led to her demise.

A COMMUNITY MOURNS

Duncan’s tragic death has sent shockwaves through both her family and the law enforcement community in Chicago.

A devoted mother and

grandmother, Duncan was remembered by her family as a pillar of strength and a dedicated public servant.

Her colleagues at the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, where she had served for over two decades, mourned the loss of a respected and valued member of their team, as many shared heartfelt tributes on Facebook and other social media outlets.

Dario Stubbs

Dario Stubbs, a 30-year-old local insurance agent, also lost his life in the senseless shooting. Stubbs, who was not believed to be a target of the violence, was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

His friends and family remember him as a kind and gentle soul who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

“Dario was a bright light in our community,” a close friend said. “He was always there for his

friends and family, and he will be deeply missed.”

A third person shot during the tragic ordeal was identified as a 29-year-old man, who is still currently receiving medical treatment.

The tragic shooting at Aziza Restaurant & Lounge is just the latest in a string of violent incidents that have plagued the Turks and Caicos Islands in recent years.

The once-peaceful islands have seen a dramatic surge in homicides, fuelled by gang violence and drug trafficking.

In 2024, the islands recorded an unprecedented 48 murders, a shocking statistic for a population of just 49,000.

Local authorities have vowed to crack down on the escalating violence, but the challenges they face are immense.

The islands’ porous borders and proximity to major drug trafficking routes make them a prime target

“We will hunt you down”- Deputy Police Commissioner to

In a powerful address at a press conference held at the Police Headquarters in Providenciales on Wednesday, January 22nd, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rodney, Adams delivered a stern message to criminals operating within the Turks and Caicos Islands: “We will find you, and we will arrest you.”

The statement comes amidst a concerning rise in homicides and significant strides made by law enforcement in disrupting criminal activity.

“For the period first of January to today’s date, we have recorded some three homicides in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Deputy Commissioner Adams stated, expressing condolences to the families of the victims. He specifically mentioned

Pastor Alva Talbot, Deputy Sheriff Shamone Duncan, and Mr.Dario Stubbs “while also acknowledging a young man injured during the recent shooting incident.

Despite the spike in violent

crime, Deputy Commissioner Adams highlighted the successes achieved by the police force in combating criminal gangs. “We have made significant strides in mitigating, disrupting and

for criminal activity.

A CALL FOR UNITY AND ACTION

In the wake of this latest tragedy, community leaders are calling for unity and action. Zhavargo Jolly, a prominent local activist, urged residents to come together and take a stand against the violence that is tearing their community apart.

“We must not allow this moment to divide us through blame or discord,” Jolly said. “Instead, we must stand as one— unwavering in our commitment to rid our communities of those who perpetuate these acts of violence.”

Jolly also called on young people to take a leadership role in the fight against crime. “To the young people in our community, I urge you to take up the mantle of leadership and stand firm in sending a clear message: criminals are not welcome here,” he said.

dismantling gang, criminal gangs,” he affirmed.

These operations, conducted in partnership with the TCI Regiment and Border Force, have led to the seizure of 18 firearms and the arrest of 57 individuals for various offenses, including murder, firearm, and drug-related crimes.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and community engagement initiatives in maintaining safety and security.

“These achievements underscore the importance of coordinated and partnership operations between the various partners,” he stated.

In a clear message to those involved in criminal activities, Deputy Commissioner Adams declared, “We will continue to hunt you. Wherever you are. We

will find you, and we will arrest you and charge you and ensure that justice prevails and justice is served for persons that are affected.”

He also revealed that additional regional and international partners would be joining forces with the local police to bolster their crimefighting efforts.

“We’ll be having additional partners that will be joining us from the regions, which will certainly support the work that we will continue to do here in the TCI,” he confirmed.

Deputy Commissioner Adams concluded his address by thanking the public for their attention and reaffirming the commitment of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force to ensuring the safety and security of all communities within the territory.

A tribute to Prophetess Elva Talbot

A courageous and inspirational woman of God

INTRODUCTION

I never imagined I would be writing this tribute to a woman of God whom I admired greatly.

I wish I had done this before the tragic event took place on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025. I am still in shock and cannot accept the fact that she is gone and how it happened. It is a true saying ‘give people their flowers while they are alive’.

I do hope this article encourages and inspires her family and friends. Prophetess Elva Talbot was a dynamic preacher. She knew the word of God and she knew how to deliver the word. She had a way of capturing your attention.

WHO IS ELVA TALBOT?

Prophetess Elva Talbot was born on the island of Salt Cay to Apostle Oscar Talbot and the late Ophelia Smith-Talbot. She was the fourth child of twelve children. Prophetess Talbot became a Christian at the tender age of 13. She grew up in the Church of God of Prophecy. However, later

Drexwell Seymour is a certified public accountant and is the managing partner for HLB TCI. His favourite hobby, however, is writing. in life, she helped to establish other churches on the island of Providenciales. Eventually, she formed her own ministry called Bread from Heaven Ministry, where she preached the gospel not only in the Turks and Caicos Islands but throughout the world in places such as Africa, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, India and Pakistan. She surely lived up to the scripture in Matthew 28:19 “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of Father, Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

She had the call of God upon her life, and she utilised her gifts

and taught others how to use their gifts. In fact, she is the author of the book “Discover your spiritual gifts and calling”.

She was also very proficient in Spanish, which was handy when her brother Oscar was in the hospital in the Dominican Republic.

She was a very humble person and never bragged about what she did.

THE IMPACT SHE MADE

My wife Joanna was very close with Prophetess Talbot and that is how I got to know her even better. Pastor Talbot had a women’s

ministry called the Pearl where she was able to bring women from different ministries together and share the word of God. There were many occasions I would listen with my wife, and I found the conversations so impactful not just for women but for men too. She also had a vibrant youth ministry impacting and transforming young people.

Her ministry used to have special services throughout the year and my wife and I would make sure that we attend at least one night. Anybody who knows me knows that I don’t like to stay in the same place for a long time but when I used to go and listen to Prophetess Talbot, I never wanted to leave the church. Prophetess was one of the first people to give me an opportunity to speak at her ministry about money management.

Prophetess Talbot groomed and raised twenty-two pastors throughout the world. Her life was not about her but about other people.

CONCLUSION

It was very unfortunate that she was murdered. Based on the allegations, it is evident and proof that what we are going through in the Turks and Caicos is an encounter with the demonic forces. It is a spiritual battle, and some people are being used by Satan to kill and destroy others. No politician can fix it. We must turn to God. I do hope that because of the murder of our beloved friend, this incident will open our eyes and we will realise there is a spiritual battle going on. I hope we commit to God.

Rest in Peace Prophetess Talbot. I believe you have gone before your time but the time that you spent here on this earth was well spent. You inspired and transformed so many lives on this earth. You did not bury your gifts. You activated them and used them to make a difference.

Despite how you left this earth, I know you are in a better place with God.

Uncommon service: A call to humility and sacrifice

Spend any significant time reading the Bible, especially about Jesus, and you will encounter a man who constantly challenged others to be, to think, and to act differently. This is no more seen in how he taught about and modeled service.

One particularly stirring example is found in John 13:120. I can’t put the entire passage here because of space, you can read it yourself, however, I can show you this - Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him (ESV). The tenor of the passage is a call to embrace an uncommon form of service—one that is selfless, transformative, and deeply rooted in love.

THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS

KENYATTA E. LEWIS

Kenyatta Lewis is the pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel, a growing church committed to taking followers of Jesus deeper and going further in their faith. Besides loving, serving, and helping people he has watched the extended Director’s cut of the Lord of the Rings trilogy multiple times.

The account of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet is one of the most profound illustrations of service in the Bible. In a culture where foot washing was considered a task for the lowliest of servants, Jesus, the King of Kings, humbled Himself to perform this act. This was not merely a symbolic gesture; it was a demonstration of His love and a call to action for His followers.

Jesus’ act of washing feet went beyond cultural norms to teach a greater spiritual truth: true greatness is found in serving others. He instructed His disciples, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher,

have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14). His actions were a call to humility, an invitation to set aside pride and status, and a reminder that service to others is service to God.

A CULTURE OF HUMILITY

Uncommon service begins with humility. In today’s world, service is often performed with an underlying motive of recognition or personal gain. Jesus, however, demonstrated a service that sought no applause but instead focused on meeting the needs of others. Even as He washed the feet of Judas, who would betray Him, Jesus exemplified unconditional love and forgiveness. This humility also extends to receiving service. Peter’s initial resistance to Jesus washing his feet reflects a common human struggle: the difficulty of acknowledging

our own vulnerabilities. Yet, humility requires us to admit that we need help and to accept the care of others. By doing so, we allow others to exercise their God-given gifts and fulfill the call to serve.

SERVICE AS AN ACT OF LOVE

True service is born out of love. Jesus’ actions in John 13 were not about fulfilling an obligation; they were a natural outpouring of His love for His disciples. This love is not reserved for those who deserve it but extends to everyone, including enemies.

Imagine the transformation in our communities if we served with this kind of love—if we looked for opportunities to meet the needs of others, celebrated their successes, and prioritized their well-being over our own. From providing a listening ear to helping a neighbor in need,

every act of service can become a reflection of Christ’s love.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF SERVICE

Uncommon service not only impacts those being served but also transforms the one who serves. It draws us closer to God, strengthens our faith, and allows us to participate in His work. As we serve, we reflect the humility and sacrifice of Jesus, becoming more like Him in the process. In an uncommon community, service becomes a way of life. It fosters unity, builds relationships, and glorifies God. As Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:13, “Through love, serve one another.”

A CHALLENGE FOR TODAY

Let us embrace the challenge of uncommon service. By following Jesus’ example, we can create communities marked by humility, love, and selflessness. Service is not a task for a select few but a calling for all who follow Christ. In serving others, we serve God. And in serving God, we find purpose, joy, and fulfillment. Let this year be a year of uncommon service—a year where we live out the love of Christ and make a lasting impact on the world around us.

The falling sky

TCI’s tranquillity shattered by explosion thanks to SpaceX and Musk

On Thursday evening, January 16, 2025, just as darkness was falling at 5:52 pm residents of Turks & Caicos in the northeastern Caribbean, saw the peaceful tranquility of their paradise shattered by huge explosions in the upper atmosphere, earth-shaking underfoot, and bright fiery displays in the sky.

Many, on the family islands of North Caicos, Middle Caicos, Providenciales, South Caicos, Grand Turk, and Salt Cay ran from homes terrified and traumatized wanting to know what was going on. In my contact with residents, a number of them suffered intense pressure in their ears, with ongoing hearing deficit, and emergency room data and medical follow-ups should be made to see whether or not the explosions have resulted in damaged eardrums or hearing loss. The incident caused local air traffic, the most prominent mode of travel in that country, to be paused for a period of time due to safety concerns. The same was the case for international air

traffic. Then, on just about every island in this T&C chain, residents began reporting evidence of neverbefore-seen material that had fallen to Earth. One unverified report was of a car on the island of Grand Turk hit by falling debris. Similar to the medical follow-up, Turks & Caicos should make concerted islandwide searches in each island to try to locate any as-yet undiscovered material that has landed on their soil. But what was the cause of all this dismay, distress, trauma, and pause for T&C residents?

About 10 minutes prior to this ‘fallout’ (actually, this word

is quite fitting as fiery material fell from the sky), an unmanned SpaceX rocket, the company and property of Elon Musk, was fired into space from a launchpad in Boca Chica. A place not far from the city of Brownsville, Texas. After 10 minutes into its flight the rocket malfunctioned and spectacularly exploded, raining down fragments of the explosion all over Turks & Caicos Islands. A number of questions are in order: First and foremost is whether or not the United States and SpaceX notified this country and its government that a rocket launch

was taking place, and that its flight path would take it in proximity of their airspace? But there is another part to this question. It is: did the FAA, SpaceX and Musk inform the British about this event taking place, because reports are those having to do with monitoring T&C airspace had prior knowledge of the launch event. If this is confirmed to be the case of local T&C and UK govt prior knowledge of the launch then there should be ‘hell to pay.’ Not only because they put T&C citizens in harm’s way without informing them, and contributing to their harm, but also because both governments might have secretly and quietly received monies to allow SpaceX and Musk this privilege. Citizens should pay close attention to whether local T&C govt or the UK hauls SpaceX and Musk on the carpet over this harmful and distressing incident. If neither of them does this is suspect, and may indicate that they have been paid off. In which case local govt should be promptly sacked or called upon to resign, and the

‘Overseeing Authority’, the UK, should be immediately required to provide evidence of what actually took place. Secondly, since the malfunction and explosion, has SpaceX and its owner put out a press release explaining what transpired? Lastly, now that debris has fallen in Turks & Caicos, has SpaceX and its owner Musk, made contact with Turks & Caicos to reassure that country and its people as to their safety from this accident, and warn them of any potential toxic health dangers and precautions that need to be taken to protect from his product?

The questions above are in order because all too often countries, and private companies, send objects into space as if this frontier belongs to them exclusively, and that such action is their right and privilege when, in actuality, ‘space’ is the property of all of us on Earth. And, as such, all of us should be considered in these undertakings, because these things are prone

Why “New Year, new you” isn’t true

Please do not bother anyone with the whole “New Year, new me” spiel. It’s tired, clichéd, and honestly, you’re not fooling anyone except yourself. I used to ride that train, but a long time ago, I realised the hard truth: no one really cares about the 1st of January, or the 1st of August for that matter.

If you were truly serious about change, it wouldn’t be tethered to a date on the calendar. It would’ve happened on, say, the 18th of April—that random day when you genuinely needed to take the leap and make it happen. Change doesn’t wait for a symbolic restart; it’s fuelled by urgency and conviction, not confetti and champagne.

That said, if you need the New Year as your motivational kickstart, then by all means, go for it. Do your thing and give it your all. But let’s be real—

Rachel Wolchin once said: “If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have had roots instead of feet.” On this quest to self-discovery, TC Islander Davidson Louis vowed to travel, write, paint, laugh and forgive. most of us aren’t fooled by the charade.

While you’re hyping yourself up for what’s essentially a continuation of the same old routine, here are eight reasons why you never really cared about the 1st of January:

YOUR GYM MEMBERSHIP IS STILL COLLECTING DUST

January 1st: “New Year, new me!” January 15th: “The couch is my soulmate, and I’m not

betraying it for a treadmill.”

THE RESOLUTION LIST IS A CARBON COPY

You’ve rewritten “eat healthier,” “drink more water,” “find a man,” “find a girl,” “go to church,” “travel more” so many times. You might as well copy and paste the same thing you wrote down in 2018.

YOU’RE STILL LATE

Whether it’s to work, meetings,

or just waking up, your time management skills have remained as dependable as a weather forecast in London. No hunny.

NETFLIX IS STILL YOUR BEST FRIEND

“I’ll cut back on screen time,” you said. But then Netflix asked, “Are you still watching?” and you felt personally attacked, so you watched the rest of the show with one eye closed and the other half-open.

YOUR INBOX IS STILL OUT OF CONTROL

You promised to declutter your emails, but here you are, scrolling through 3,492 unread messages and wondering if it’s too late to just delete the entire account.

YOUR SAVINGS ARE DIRE

You haven’t saved for that land or that house. If you have, well done, bae. If you haven’t, you know what to do. Stop eating out!

YOUR WARDROBE IS STILL “WORK IN PROGRESS”

“I’ll dress better this year,” you said, while building a collection of cheap items. Buy fewer things, but decent ones. Yes, hunny.

YOU’RE STILL BLAMING YOUR PARENTS

They’ve done everything that they could. Now the ball is in your court, and you must score. I’m scared too, hunny.

So, here’s to another year of embracing the chaos and owning who you are—because honestly, who needs “new” when the “old” is this much fun? Share if you care.

Cabinet approves additional funding for police

On Monday, January 20, all members of the government met with HE Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam for a special meeting of the Cabinet to discuss the crime situation and actions to be taken.

The meeting, held at the Office of the Premier in Providenciales,

came on the heels of last weekend’s double homicide at a popular night spot on the island. That tragic incident left a local man and a female American tourist dead. At that meeting, Cabinet members were provided with an update on recent incidents of serious crime.

Members also noted the previous uplift of over $3.5 million in the Police Force’s 2024-2025 budget.

Cabinet has now approved special funding of an additional $500,000 from the Contingency Fund to cover the cost of immediate specialised tactical

police deployments from within the region to assist with crimefighting initiatives.

Cabinet also approved special funding of $100,000 from the Contingency Fund to assist TCI Crimestoppers with crime-fighting initiatives such as rewards and tips.

A recent Cabinet statement

highlighted that the newly approved funds are in addition to the $730,000 allocated to the Police in a supplementary budget last November. This previous funding increased the Police’s serious crime budget from $500,000 to $1.2 million for the 2024/25 financial year.

Targeted gang attack resulted in Grace Bay nightclub shooting

In a shocking revelation, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force announced on Wednesday that the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of an American tourist and a local resident last Saturday was not a random act of violence against tourists, but a targeted attack on suspected gang members.

In a press conference held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force provided a significant update on the tragic shooting that occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, where an American tourist and a local resident were fatally shot.

Detective Superintendent

Dean Holden, Head of Crime, Safeguarding and Public Protection, revealed that the shooting was a targeted attack against potential gang members and that the victims were likely not the intended targets.

Holden, who made the announcement, stated, “Our assessment of the intelligence that we have in relation to this is that this was a targeted attack against potential other criminals or gang members who were probably located there, I accept that that is probably not particularly reassuring but what I want to emphasise is that this was not an indiscriminate attack against a tourist location. It was targeted.”

Holden further revealed that the

two deceased victims, 50-yearold American tourist Shamone A. Duncan and 30-year-old local resident Dario Stubb, were likely not the intended targets, but rather “collateral” in the attack.

“We believe that those three individuals were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Holden said, adding that it was “almost impossible to conceive” that anyone was intentionally trying to hit Duncan, who was on a balcony some distance away from the shooter.

“In addition to that, the surviving victim, again, there’s nothing to suggest that he was a target of the attack.”

Holden said the force is confident that they are closing in on the perpetrators.

“I am very confident now that we have a good understanding of the group that is involved in this attack, and in the relatively near future, I’m very confident that we will be taking executive action with a view to bringing them to justice,” Holden declared.

Holden revealed that based on investigations, while the primary perpetrator acted alone, he was likely part of a larger criminal organisation. The attack is believed to be connected to a potential dispute between organised crime groups.

Holden acknowledged the challenges of providing accurate information early in the investigation, stating that misinformation could jeopardise future legal proceedings.

While the police force remains tight-lipped about specific details to avoid compromising the investigation, they assured the public that they are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice and have dedicated significant resources to the investigation, including collaboration with US counterparts and the use of various investigative methods such as forensics, ballistics, CCTV, and intelligence development.

Unlicensed electricians will be penalised and prosecuted – Utilities Commissioner

Unlicensed electricians are put on notice that a $5000 fine and/ or imprisonment is on the books should they carry out electrical work in the TCI without the proper licenses and legally obtained documents.

An individual may face severe penalties including a fine of up to $5,000 and/or imprisonment for up to two years for offences including forging, altering, or defacing a license; performing electrical work without a valid license; failing to comply with license conditions or submitting false documentation to obtain a license, the ministry of public safety and utilities warned in a recent press release.

They warned that under the Electricity Ordinance (2021), it is unlawful to perform any electrical work without a valid electrical license issued by TCI’s Electricity Board.

“Electricians working across various sectors including commercial construction, residential buildings, solar photovoltaic installations and hospitality such as hotels, resorts and villas must hold a valid electrical license,” Commissioner

He said operating without a valid license is not only unlawful but poses significant risks to the safety of the operator and the general public, and to the quality of electrical work in these industries. The categories in which licenses

are issued are electrical engineer, master electrician, journeyman electrician, wireman, lineman, apprentice, and engineer-intraining, the utilities ministry advised.

Additionally, to obtain a license, applicants must complete an application form, which may

be found in Section 72 of the Electricity Ordinance and submit it to the Chair of the Electricity Board. Applicants are also advised to provide all required supporting documents based on the qualifications outlined in Sections 74–80 of the Electricity Ordinance

For license renewal, electricians are encouraged to apply at least three months before the expiration of their current license using the same application form (Section 72, Electricity Ordinance). Renewing early ensures compliance with the Ordinance and avoids disruptions in licensure validity. Licenses expiring within the next three months are now eligible for renewal.

The public utilities ministry warned that electricians licensed outside of the Turks and Caicos Islands, including visiting tourists, are prohibited from performing electrical work locally unless they obtain the appropriate license under the Electricity Ordinance.

Licenses issued under the Electricity Ordinance are valid for one year unless revoked earlier by the authorities (Section 71, Electricity Ordinance).

“We urge all electricians to prioritise compliance with licensing requirements to preserve public safety and uphold the integrity and quality of electrical work across the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Commissioner Arthur encouraged.

TCI ready for electronic voting in February elections

The Turks and Caicos Islands Elections Department demonstrated new electronic voting equipment, the DS200, ahead of the February 7, 2025 general election, marking a significant shift from traditional paper balloting to electronic tabulation.

Elections Supervisor Mr Lewis, who has served since 2007, called the change “marvellous” during the public demonstration. “We love changes in the elections department,” he said, noting this would be his fourth and final general election before retirement.

During the public demonstration on Thursday, January 16, election officials introduced key changes for voters in the upcoming elections.

The new system introduces three key changes for voters: a combined single ballot paper replacing the previous two separate papers, shading ovals instead of marking X’s, and inserting ballots into electronic tabulators rather than traditional ballot boxes.

Training Manager Clara Gardiner emphasised the system’s

Voting is expected to be faster

efficiency: “The machine will make it quicker. It doesn’t take long for a paper to go through the scanner.”

Deputy Supervisor of Elections Ms Pratt addressed public education concerns, stating they’ve conducted island-wide demonstrations since July 2023.

“We paid attention to that process to let them understand how this machine works and what is required of them when it’s time to vote,” she said.

Each polling station will be equipped with DS200 tabulating machines, with additional units available as backup. Larger

Premier assures justice for murder victims, pledges support for families

As families in the Turks and Caicos Islands and abroad reel from three devastating murders just weeks into a new year, Premier Charles Washington Misick has vowed to ensure justice for the families of recent murder victims, including Pastor Alva Talbot, Dario Stubbs, and American tourist Shamone Duncan.

In a heartfelt address on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Premier Misick expressed his condolences and pledged that the government would not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He revealed that he had personally spoken with the families

of Pastor Talbot and Dario Stubbs, offering his deepest condolences and a solemn promise of justice.

He also extended his heartfelt sympathy to the family of Duncan, assuring them that the police force is working diligently to ensure accountability.

“To them, I offered my deepest condolences, but also a solemn promise: my government will not stop until the perpetrators are brought to justice. This is not just a commitment to one family but to all families who have suffered because of crime in our islands.”

COLLABORATION WITH US AUTHORITIES

In the case of Duncan, the Premier

confirmed that the police force is collaborating closely with her relatives and US law enforcement agencies.

The Governor’s Office is also in contact with the US State Department, and Experience Turks and Caicos is providing support to the family during this difficult time.

Premier Misick also revealed that a National Security Council meeting was held to review recent events, assess threat levels, and consider mitigation plans.

He also expressed his concerns to the UK Minister representing the Overseas Territories, emphasising the need for greater support from the UK government.

The territory’s leader assured the

public that all necessary resources were being deployed to investigate the murders and bring the culprits to justice.

He also highlighted the

New mental health programmes to be implemented at His Majesty’s Prison

The Department of Behavioural Health Services, in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Unit, has rolled out several key programmes aimed at helping prisoners cope with life in the prison environment and make positive changes to improve their mental well-being.

This year, three core programmes will be launched: Life After Life: Reclaiming Purpose, Pathways to Accountability: A Guide for Positive Change, and I Can Recover.

Director of the Department of Behavioural Health Services, Dr. Alicia Malcolm stated: “Essentially, these new programmes aim to not only educate but to also support the treatment needs of some of the most common mental health issues seen in prisons. Some of the programmes will commence as early as February 2025 with at least two cycles per year.”

Life After Life: Reclaiming Purpose

The Life After Life programme is an eight-week therapeutic initiative designed for inmates serving life sentences, the Department shared in a media statement.

The programme aims to assist prisoners in reevaluating their identity, values, and self-worth. Through guided self-reflection, emotional resilience training, and value clarification exercises, participating inmates will explore their past choices and find ways to create meaning and purpose within

HM Prison in Grand Turk (Google image)

their circumstances.

The programme is intended to foster accountability, empathy, and personal growth while equipping participants with tools to build positive relationships and leave a lasting, positive legacy.

The Department noted that by the end, inmates will gain a renewed sense of self and a commitment to living with integrity and purpose despite their life sentence.

Pathways to Accountability: A

Guide for Positive Change

This eight-week therapeutic programme aims to address sexoffending behaviour by fostering self-awareness, accountability, and empathy while equipping participants with the tools for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

As explained by the department, the programme combines psychoeducation, group discussions, and practical skill-

building to explore offending cycles, emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and relapse prevention.

Participants are guided to reflect on their actions’ impact, develop empathy for victims, and identify triggers and coping strategies to prevent reoffending. Emphasis is placed on building resilience, overcoming stigma, and creating personalised plans for sustained change.

It is hoped that by the end of the program, inmates will be better equipped for reintegration and capable of maintaining a safer, healthier lifestyle.

‘I Can Recover’

The ‘I Can Recover’ programme is also an eight-week substance abuse program targeted at harmful or dependent drug or alcohol users whose misuse of substances places them at a significantly high risk of reoffending.

It is designed to assist prisoners in understanding addiction and coping with the underlying issues surrounding their addiction.

The Department stated that these programmes will operate alongside existing mental health initiatives at His Majesty’s Prison, including the established anger management programme and ongoing individual psychotherapy services.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Human Services, Mrs. Desiree Lewis, commenting on the new programmes stated: “These initiatives speak to the ongoing collaboration between the health sector and the judiciary system which often sees persons who are challenged by mental health and substance use issues.0

“The Ministry of Health is therefore committed to continuing its support of mental health needs in prison which can positively impact public health, safety, and society as a whole.”

Premier Hon Charles Washington Misick

Why composure and vision matter in leadership

Dear Editor,

I’ve spent my fair share of time around leaders—campaigning for them, advising them, and analysing them from the sidelines—and one thing I’ve learned is that people pay more attention to how a leader conducts himself in a challenging situation than what he says in a scripted speech. Leadership isn’t merely about the words you use or the volume of your voice; it’s about the capacity to remain calm, respectful, and strategic in the face of opportunity and adversity. When I look at two prominent figures in the Turks and Caicos Islands—PDM’s Edwin Astwood and PNP’s Charles Washington Misick—I can’t help noticing stark differences in how they handle themselves, differences that speak volumes about who’s ready to lead these islands effectively.

Let’s start with Astwood. Nobody doubts his passion for the Turks and Caicos Islands. It’s there, plainly visible whenever he takes a microphone or offers an impromptu statement. You can sense he truly cares about the

direction of this country and wants to make a difference. But there’s a fine line between passion and volatility, and Astwood far too often drifts into the latter. Passion is a welcome commodity in politics, but only when channelled into real leadership—something that goes beyond repeating the same talking points or lashing out when challenged. Now, leadership is no cakewalk. It demands a steady hand and a willingness to withstand the inevitable heat that comes with the job. In Astwood’s case, observers have pointed to moments where his temper flared to the point of overshadowing the issues at stake. That’s a problem. When your reactions cloud your message, you lose the trust of those hoping for ideas and the temperament to see them carried out. People expect a leader to manage pressure, build alliances, and propose realistic plans. If you’re constantly on the defensive or guided by emotion, it’s tough to bring folks together to solve problems. And let’s be honest: life on a small island chain

involves many pressing challenges, from economic shifts in tourism to environmental vulnerabilities. You simply can’t afford a leader who reacts impulsively.

On the opposite end of the spectrum stands Charles Washington Misick. Misick doesn’t stop at being measured. He also backs up his words with action. He prioritises detail and feasibility when discussing economic development or natural resource protection. Astwood’s passionate appeals sometimes feel like raw rallying

cries rather than implementable strategies. Misick in contrast lays out policies that demonstrate he’s done his homework. That kind of evidence-based leadership resonates, especially in a place like Turks and Caicos, where the balance between tourism-driven growth and environmental stewardship can’t be taken lightly.

Misick embraces the idea that building a better future involves unifying diverse communities. In politics, you don’t succeed by declaring victory or pointing fingers. You succeed by uniting people who bring different perspectives and skill sets to the table. From what I’ve witnessed, Misick invites stakeholders to speak, listens to their concerns, and adjusts his proposals in response to new insights. That’s how you forge broad-based solutions that stick. It’s how you lead a small but complex collection of islands that can’t afford to let petty divisions undermine progress.

Leadership isn’t determined by how passionately you can shout from a podium. It’s not defined by how often you make headlines

by calling out your opponents. It’s measured by your ability to negotiate tough circumstances, unify people behind a shared purpose, and carefully steward a country’s resources, culture, and economic vitality. Astwood might electrify crowds with his heated rhetoric, but you’re left with more noise than progress unless you match the intensity with maturity. Misick, on the other hand, demonstrates the calm and strategic vision that the Turks and Caicos Islands need now more than ever. So, if you’re sizing up the future of TCI, the answer seems obvious: look to the leader who combines conviction with composure, who shows empathy as well as intellect, and who has a tangible plan for moving forward. Look to Charles Washington Misick. He’s the one who can take all that passion we see in Astwood and mould it into lasting progress. And at the end of the day, that kind of leadership will matter most for the Turks and Caicos Islands people.

Travellers warned about illegal importation of handheld gambling devices

In the past month, the TCI Border Force has confiscated 70 handheld gambling devices during routine searches of travellers’ luggage and cargo at the Howard Hamilton International Airport in Providenciales.

In a stern warning on Thursday, January 23, the Border Force said these devices – often disguised as everyday electronic gadgets - are

strictly prohibited under the Casino Ordinance, which imposes severe penalties for their importation.

Smugglers frequently attempt to conceal these items within personal belongings or mislabel them on cargo manifests to evade detection. The Force said these sophisticated tactics, including hidden compartments and misleading product descriptions,

If these things have been caused by those involved in this mishap, and even if not, there is an accountability and liability problem for those involved. Here’s what I mean:

In efforts to generate profits and elevate its status SpaceX and Musk, have distressed, traumatized, and caused physical discomfort (that might be later found to be actual harm once investigation and follow-up is done) to residents of this tranquil country. But if that shattered tranquility were not enough, its falling damaged property on T&C soil might present added danger to citizens. Most certainly someone must be accountable and liable for these insults. But in addition, Turks & Caicos is one of the world’s most sought-after tourist paradise destinations for vacationing. So those on the islands visiting during this event were impacted as well, as fiery debris falling from the sky, terrifying explosions, sudden unexplained painful pressure on their eardrums, and the Earth shaking underfoot was most assuredly not their idea of relaxation or ‘paradise.’ So, these visitors were similarly affected and traumatized by the event, and should be taken into account.

The pause in air traffic, both locally and internationally, with this SpaceX mishap, presented not only a serious dislocation in travel and the inconveniences that followed, but it also hindered income generation for those businesses, both domestic and international. This translated into financial loss for this

However, under the Casino Ordinance, individuals caught importing, possessing, or distributing unlicensed gambling devices may face fines of up to $3,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both, depending on the severity of the violation.

The Border Force stated that ignorance of the law is no defence, urging all travellers and businesses to comply with import regulations.

Travellers are further advised to ensure that any electronic devices they bring into the territory comply with local laws. Importers and retailers are likewise reminded to

country and its citizens. Who is responsible for remedying this if not those having to do with the mishap? The long and short of all this is that, between Turks & Caicos citizens and its welcomed visitors, there was suffered psychological and physical trauma, assault on tranquility, inconvenience, and a dislocation and loss of finances due to the pause put in place as a safety measure during this Thursday evening’s event.

Moreover, the fallen debris might be presenting ongoing added danger to residents of the country, due to chemical and electronic constituents. All resulting from a mishap due to SpaceX and its owner Elon Musk. It is advised that Turks & Caicos, its government, and its people, tabulate a bill for compensation for harm done, potential harm, and financial loss, and present it to SpaceX and owner Elon Musk for re-imbursement.

This re-imbursement should be distributed evenly in a particular dollar amount to the citizens of this country as remedy to the harm done to them. As for the visitors, provision should be made for them to, at least, be offered an airline ticket gratis for a return trip to their ‘paradise’ within a year. The cost of this should be included in the bill presented to the ‘payer.’ In the instance of this matter, if the payer refuses request for payment, or ignores the request, Turks & Caicos should be prepared to file a case against the parties responsible for injury in their local court, with progression to U.S. District Court and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), until remedy is achieved. Nothing less should be acceptable.

Yours truly

entity or individual involved in importing or possessing unlicensed gambling devices is breaching the Casino Ordinance and will be held accountable under the law, the Border Force warned.

Davis: FNM is party of elites

Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip “Brave” Davis taunted the Free National Movement during a Progressive Liberal Party meeting on Tuesday night, highlighting Dr Hubert Minnis’ continued outsider status in a party he once led.

Dr Minnis told reporters this week that his party’s leaders have not “tapped” him on his shoulder, a cheeky reference to Michael Pintard’s comment that people who have participated in the party’s mandatory training session have been tapped to build support in constituencies.

While addressing PLP supporters in Pinewood last night, Mr Davis painted the FNM as fractured and ineffectual.

“Poor Minnis say nobody tapped him on the shoulder,” he said. “Well, PLPs, let me tell you — he might be waiting a long time

for that tap because it looks like they’re tapping everybody except him!

“Imagine, their former leader, the man who they paraded around as their standard-bearer, can’t even make it through their training sessions. Training sessions!

“You mean to tell me that Minnis, who was Prime Minister just a few years ago, now needs to sit in class to learn how to run?”

Mr Davis also touted what he called progress in infrastructure development, economic reform, and efforts to lower the cost of living.

“We’re building hospitals, raising wages, promoting workers, and delivering results for the Bahamian people,” he said.

He highlighted initiatives to ease financial pressures on Bahamians, including reducing VAT on

essential goods, overhauling the energy sector to lower electricity prices, and diversifying supply chains by importing goods directly from countries like Brazil.

“The same beef and other products that we currently buy from the United States, we’re going to make it easier to bring them in directly from Brazil or wherever, and cut out the middleman,” he said.

“We’re going to stop unfair business practices that make it hard for new businesses to succeed.”

He urged PLP members to remain united, emphasising the importance of solidarity as the party heads into what he described as a pivotal election.

He accused the opposition of being silent on the issue of monopolies and failing to prioritise the economic well-

Bermuda: Premier pledges more to ease cost of living

More tax breaks and other concessions are in the pipeline for Bermuda if the Progressive Labour Party wins the General Election next month, the Premier said this week.

At a press conference, David Burt also pledged that the Government will do more to make sure that cuts in customs duty on essential food items will be passed on to the consumer — something that he claimed retailers were failing to do.

Mr Burt said that his party will unveil its election platform on February 6, less than two weeks before the February 18 poll.

The PLP leader said: “We are making steady progress in our economy. We do see unemployment figures are low compared to what they were prior to the pandemic. There’s a record number of Bermudians working in international business.

“All of this has helped to deliver increased government revenues and allowed us to reduce the burden of taxation on working people in Bermuda and in local business.”

Mr Burt ran through a list of initiatives that his administration had implemented since the Covid pandemic of 2020, including payroll tax reductions, customs duty breaks on essential food items, price freezes on gasoline and pensions increases.

He said: “These results didn’t happen by accident. They happened because your government is

being of ordinary Bahamians. He suggested, without evidence, that the FNM’s failure to comment or address these issues is tied to their financial backers.

He framed the PLP as the only party capable of driving meaningful reform and delivering a more equitable economy.

“Change is coming,” he promised, adding that lower prices and increased competition would benefit all Bahamians, not just a select few.

“If one person or one set of people own everything, all the time, then they can charge what they like.” (Tribune242) focused on solutions.

“While we’ve made significant progress, we know that the rising cost of living continues to affect families across our island.

“To us, the rising global cost of living is not just a headline or a political tool to be used as a soundbite.

“It is a reality that affects hard-working Bermudians in our communities and in our families every day. But let’s be clear. Your PLP government has not stood idly by.

“We’ve rolled up our sleeves, taken action where we can and we’ve taken choices in one simple principle — fairness for Bermudians.

“We will not stop where we were because we know that more

has to be done.”

Mr Burt said that the PLP was committed to reducing energy taxes by a further 20 per cent at the next Budget, and to setting up a seniors’ day centre providing meals and activities for older people.

He said: “Senior care is a cost and what we want to do is make sure that we can find more affordable options for persons who are experiencing this.”

Mr Burt added that people on basic health insurance will be guaranteed a primary healthcare visit, and a specialist visit for those on FutureCare.

He said: “This is what we’re talking about — investing in people and putting money into spaces where it can reduce the burden on persons.”

SVG welcomes pardon of Marcus Garvey, calls for full exoneration

The Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines has formally welcomed President Joseph Biden’s executive pardon of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, while simultaneously calling for his full exoneration by the United States government.

The executive pardon, granted on January 19, 2025, addresses what the government describes as a case where Garvey “was railroaded, judicially, in an unfair and politically-jaundiced trial for alleged ‘mail fraud’ in the USA in 1923.”

Garvey, who is recognised as a National Hero of Jamaica, was serving as President of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) at the time of his conviction.

“The Government of St Vincent

and the Grenadines is calling further for a full exoneration by the United States government of Marcus Garvey on the trumpedup charge for which he was found guilty and imprisoned,” the statement announced, noting that such an exoneration would require congressional action.

The government confirmed it “is pleased to be advised that Congresswoman The Honourable Yvette Clarke, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, is taking legislative steps towards Garvey’s exoneration.”

This development follows sustained advocacy efforts from various organizations and governments. A previous appeal to former President Obama during his administration yielded no results.

Jamaican immigration advocates dismiss Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship

Jamaican immigration advocates in the United States (US) have said that the executive order signed by President Donald Trump to halt birthright citizenship is red meat to his base but will have little or no effect as birthright citizenship is enshrined in the US Constitution and a constitutional amendment would be required to end it.

The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution states: “ All persons born or naturalized in the US, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”

The Jamaican immigration advocates say they expect that a number of lawsuits will be filed against the executive order.

And the fallout from the executive order has already begun.

Already lawsuits have been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Asian Law Caucus and the State Democracy Defenders Fund.

Meanwhile, some 12 democratic state attorneys general have also filed a lawsuit against the executive order.

A joint statement from the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Asian-Pacific Caucus (CAPAC) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus indicated that a cornerstone of the country’s more-than-century-old

law is that those born on US soil are American citizens.

“ President Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship violates the 14th Amendment and the public oath he swore to protect and defend the Constitution,” the statement read.

“Through the hard-fought legal battle of Wong Kim Ark v. the United States in 1898, the Supreme Court upheld that birthright citizenship is a constitutionally protected right, and it is President Trump’s duty, as commander in chief of the free world, to uphold the law.

“We cannot allow President Trump and Congressional Republicans to go down this dangerous path that undermines the principles of equality and justice that our nation was built upon.”

The statement indicated that Congressional Democrats and the chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus are ready to stand up to any attempts to undermine the Constitution and roll back fundamental civil rights.

‘SHAMELESS ABUSE’

“I was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, 60 years ago to two Jamaican immigrants. My citizenship is my birthright. If Donald Trump

wants to tell me, my family, my neighbours in Brooklyn and across New York and around the United States that our citizenship is illegitimate and we are not proper Americans, then he should expect to hear from the tens of millions of Americans he just disgraced,” said Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, whose parents are Jamaicans. “We are witnessing a shameless abuse of power, and I can say with certainty the immigrant community will not stand by as it progresses further. We will not yield to Mr Trump’s impropriety, illegality, and cruelty. He will not intimidate us.”

She said that, months ago, Trump promised he would be a dictator on ‘Day One’.

“Having reached ‘Day One’, and having seen our new president sign numerous executive orders that either override Congress, overrule the courts, or undo the Constitution altogether, it is entirely clear that Mr Trump has kept his word. With a power no president has ever known before, he has precisely spelled out how he plans to govern in the years to come – and that is by decree,” Clarke said. “Through his signature alone, Donald Trump has taken executive action that

will worsen American lives and worsen America’s standing in our world. Among his many despicable commands, he has resurrected old, failed policies like the ‘Muslim Ban’ and ‘Remain in Mexico’, furthered current anti-DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) and anti-fairness practices, withdrew our nation from the Paris Climate Agreement and World Health Organization, and introduced disturbing new policies like his decree to end birthright citizenship as a constitutionally enshrined protection,” she said.

Immigration attorney Winston Tucker told The Gleaner that Jamaicans should not be worried about the executive order.

“I don’t see any possibility of a constitutional amendment that would end birthright citizenship,” he said.

Tucker pointed to all steps that must be taken to overturn a clause of the Constitution and said, even if Congress wanted to do this, it would be a long and drawn-out process. He said he doubted that the US Supreme Court would uphold the executive order.

He did concede, however, that the order can be used to block certain things as, in the short term, people who would benefit from birthright citizenship can be frustrated but, in the end, their rights will not be denied.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is reporting that it has crossed a historic milestone, welcoming over one million tourists. The government reported that data from the Central Statistics Office revealed 1,092,139 visitors came to the island in 2024, marking a 9.8% increase from the 994,896 visitors in 2023.

It’s the first time that the territory has welcomed over a million visitors since 2016. There was an overall increase in visitors across all categories. On the cruise side, 768,293 passengers came to the territory which represented a 6.8 per cent increase in visitors when compared to 719,519 in 2023. Day trippers climbed 35.1 per cent to 17,970 when compared to 13,297 in 2023. “These impressive results highlight the diversity of our tourism offerings and reflect our commitment to creating exceptional experiences for all

types of visitors,” said Dr Natalio Wheatly, Premier of the Virgin Islands. “It is a testament to our enduring appeal, the resilience of our tourism sector, and the hard work of everyone who contributes to making these islands a worldclass destination. As we look to the future, we are dedicated to building on this momentum and ensuring that our growth benefits both our visitors and the people of the Virgin Islands.”

The government said country expects 2025 to be another marquee year for the BVI with numerous new developments and revitalisations. The Peter Island Resort reopened in December 2024 following a complete restoration. Meanwhile, the renowned Bitter End Yacht Club is set to introduce four luxury Beach Bungalows and eight new Marina lofts, along with an 18-room boutique hotel. Additionally, Biras Creek Resort

UK leaves door open to joining EU trading scheme

Downing Street has not ruled out the possibility of the UK joining an arrangement between the EU and neighbouring countries that is designed to facilitate tariff-free trading.

On Wednesday, the EU’s new trade chief Maros Sefcovic told the BBC he was open to Britain joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM) as part of a post-Brexit “reset”.

The arrangement allows for tariff-free trade of some goods from across dozens of countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

Earlier, the EU relations minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “We don’t currently have any plans to join PEM.”

But asked about the possibility of the UK joining arrangement, the prime minister’s official spokesman told reporters: “We’ve always said that we want to look at ways to reduce barriers to trade whilst remaining within our clear red lines.

“The arrangement that’s being discussed is not a customs union.

“Our red line has always been that we will never join our customs

The arrangement allows for tariff-free trade of some goods from across dozens of countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East

union, never re-join the single market, no freedom of movement, but we’re just not going to get ahead of those discussions.”

However, the spokesman said “as we’ve always been clear, we think that there’s room to improve on the trading relationship with the EU, and we’ll be having those discussions.

“Our focus is on rebuilding our ties with Europe, working with them on a wide range of issues, from trade and investment to

security and defence.”

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Sefcovic told the BBC the idea had not been “precisely formulated” by London and the “ball is in the UK’s court”.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, who is also in Davos, told the BBC the UK had not proposed joining the scheme, but added: “We talked to business a lot about it... some sectors would benefit, some wouldn’t.”

Asked about PEM in the House

of Commons, Thomas-Symonds said he welcomed the “positive, constructive tone” from the EU trade commissioner.

“We don’t currently have any plans to join PEM, and we are not going to provide a running commentary on every comment that’s made.”

The minister’s comment prompted anger from the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, who recently called for the UK to join a new customs deal with the EU, allowing tariff- free trade between the two blocs.

It would also restrict the UK’s ability to strike trade deals with other countries.

Sir Ed accused the government of an “act of economic negligence,” adding: “It is alarming that the government is happy to negotiate with China but won’t even look at a better trading arrangement with our closest neighbours in Europe.

“It is time for a proper UK-EU customs arrangement so we can strengthen our negotiations with Donald Trump, cut the red tape on our businesses and grow the

economy.”

Conservative shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel accused Labour of “bending the knee to the EU”.

“These latest reports that the government might shackle us to the European Union are deeply concerning, and once again make clear that Keir Starmer and his chums are all too happy to put their ideology ahead of our national interest, no matter the cost.”

Raising the subject in the House of Commons, Conservative MP, John Cooper, said joining the PanEuro-Mediterranean Convention would turn the UK “once again into rule-takers and not rule-makers”.

He asked Thomas-Symonds to rule out signing up to an agreement that could see the UK “taking EU rules” and instead “strike out in the world and do new deals with America and around the PacificRim”.

The minister replied that it was not a “binary choice” and the government would not “choose between allies. We look to deepen all our relationships.” (BBC)

Judge will block Trump’s executive order that aims to end birthright citizenship

Pope Francis has said that Donald Trump’s plans to deport illegal migrants from the US would be a “disgrace” if they materialised.

Speaking to an Italian TV programme from his Vatican residence, Francis said that if the plans went ahead, Trump would make “poor wretches that don’t have anything foot the bill”.

“That’s not right. That’s not how you solve problems,” he said.

Trump has promised to begin the largest expulsion of undocumented immigrants in US history soon

after he takes office.

In a message to Trump shared on Monday, Pope Francis offered him “cordial greetings” and urged him to lead a society with “no room for hatred, discrimination or exclusion” and promote “peace and reconciliation among peoples”.

The Pope is known to hold the issue of migrants dear. During a public audience last August, he said that “systematically working by all means to drive away migrants” was “a grave sin”.

In 2016, before the first presidential election won by Trump, Pope Francis said “a person who thinks only about building walls... and not of building bridges, is not Christian”.

Referring to Trump’s promise to build a wall on the Mexican border to keep migrants from travelling into the US, Francis said: “I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and I will give him the benefit of the doubt.”

A federal judge said he is issuing a temporary restraining order on Thursday to block President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship.

Judge John Coughenour, a Ronald Reagan appointee who sits in Seattle, called the executive order “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The judge granted the request by Washington Attorney General Nick Brown and three other Democratic-led states for the emergency order halting implementation of the policy

for the next 14 days while there are more briefings in the legal challenge.

“I have been on the bench for over four decades, I can’t remember another case whether the question presented was as clear,” Coughenour said.

“Where were the lawyers” when the decision to sign the executive order was made, the judge asked. He said that it “boggled” his mind that a member of the bar would claim the order was constitutional. (CNN)

Ireland finally appoints new prime minister after chaos in parliament

Micheál Martin became Ireland’s taoiseach (prime minister) for the second time in his political career on Thursday, a day later than planned.

The Irish parliament descended into uproar on Wednesday, its first day back in session after weeks of political horse-trading and coalition-building, following the country’s general election in November.

Wednesday’s order of business was scheduled to start with the vote to elect a new taoiseach but this formality was delayed repeatedly. It was then ultimately abandoned for the day, as opposition parties took to their feet in loud protest over the granting of extended speaking rights to independent parliamentarians who support the incoming government.

Attempts to resolve the dispute continued into Thursday morning when the government acknowledged that there was “ambiguity” in speaking rights and an agreement was reached that government-supporting independents cannot for now retain extended speaking rights from the opposition benches.

The 64-year-old Martin, leader of the Fianna Fáil party, was finally elected taoiseach before 2 p.m. in Dublin, saying it was “a profound honor to be nominated to serve as head of the government in a free, democratic and diverse republic.”

Martin stressed the importance of Ireland’s relationships with Europe, the United States and the United Kingdom, noting that his

nation’s “kinship” with the US went back to before the formation of the Irish state and endures “because we have continued to renew bonds of respect and cooperation.”

“The Ireland-America relationship is one that benefits us both and will emerge strongly no matter what,” Martin told the packed chamber of parliament.

Although Ireland’s November

election bucked the 2024 trend that saw so many countries reject incumbent governments, no political party had a resounding win.

The country’s center-right Fianna Fáil party won the most seats on November 29 but did not secure enough for a parliamentary majority. It returned to its most recent coalition partnership with

the country’s other centrist party, Fine Gael, and spent recent weeks in pursuit of further political backing.

Last week it was announced that the two parties had secured the support of a group of regional independent lawmakers and was ready to form a government.

Martin becomes Irish taoiseach for the second time.

He first assumed the office when Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil entered their coalition government in 2020, joining forces against a surge in support for Sinn Féin, Ireland’s nationalist party.

That groundbreaking partnership between Ireland’s long-time vying parties saw party leaders Leo Varadkar and Martin swap the roles of prime minister and deputy every two years until Varadkar unexpectedly stepped down last year. He was replaced by Simon Harris, who became Ireland’s youngest ever leader. Harris, the outgoing taoiseach, assumed the role of deputy prime minister Thursday, and will expect to step back into the role of Ireland’s leader again in 2027. (BBC)

German frontrunner vows permanent border controls after knife attack

The conservative opposition leader tipped to lead Germany following next month’s elections has promised far-reaching changes to border and asylum rules after a group of children were targeted in a deadly knife attack in Bavaria.

Friedrich Merz promised in effect to close Germany’s borders to all irregular migrants, including those with a right to protection.

A two-year-old boy of Moroccan origin and a man aged 41 were killed in Wednesday’s attack in Aschaffenburg, and several others were hurt.

An Afghan man aged 28 was due to appear in court on Thursday accused of murder and grievous harm.

Wednesday’s stabbing in Aschaffenburg is the latest in a string of violent and fatal attacks that have involved suspects who have sought asylum in Germany.

In a matter of hours, the stabbings prompted a hardened tone from Chancellor Olaf Scholz as well as Merz, the centre-right opposition leader.

Scholz promised quick action and called it an “act of terror” –although officials have not, so far, said that they believe there was a terrorist motive.

Merz, whose Christian Democrats lead the opinion polls

ahead of 23 February federal elections, refused to accept that attacks in Mannheim last May, Solingen in August and Magdeburg last month, would be “the new normal”.

The Afghan suspect in yesterday’s attack arrived in Germany in 2022 and was linked to three previous acts of violence, according to Bavarian officials.

He had agreed to leave Germany last month but was still receiving psychiatric treatment and living in asylum accommodation.

An investigating judge will decide whether he should be remanded in custody or placed temporarily in a psychiatric hospital.

Merz said that on his first day as chancellor he would instruct the interior ministry to take permanent control of Germany’s borders.

“We see before us the ruins of 10 years of misguided asylum and immigration policy in Germany,” he said. “We reached the limit.”

Under his party colleague, Angela Merkel, Germany welcomed more than a million refugees during Europe’s 2015-16 migrant crisis.

Criticising EU asylum rules as as “recognisably dysfunctional”, he said Germany should now “exercise its right to the primacy of

national law”.

Germany has already reinstated checks on its borders to combat illegal immigration, which is allowed temporarily under the EU’s border-free Schengen rules as a “last-resort” measure, but not on permanent basis.

Merz also said it was time to significantly increase the number of places available for detention ahead of deportation.

Merz’s promise to close the borders to illegal entries on day one at the chancellery in Berlin has a Trumpian ring to it.

The US president has pushed through a flurry of executive orders and actions to tackle illegal immigration since he re-entered

the White House this week.

In Germany, both the centre-left chancellor and Merz are conscious that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has been consistently polling second, has made immigration a signature issue.

AfD leader Alice Weidel has called for a vote in the German parliament next week on closing Germany’s borders and turning back irregular migrants. “The knife terror of Aschaffenburg must have consequences now,” she said on social media.

Some critics will argue that Scholz and Merz’s move to take a tougher stance now comes too late. Others will argue that a rightwards

shift by mainstream parties could simply bolster the AfD’s arguments. In any case German politics does not lend itself to a presidentialstyle set of day-one decrees, given the necessity of forming coalitions with other parties.

The leader of the liberal Free Democratic Party, Christian Lindner, said Merz would not be able to introduce such changes if he went into coalition with the Social Democrats or Green party.

Nancy Faeser, who is both interior minister and a party colleague of Olaf Scholz, suggested that “some people are now making largely fact-free arguments in election campaign mode”.

“I can only warn very clearly against abusing such a terrible act for populism, that only benefits the right-wing populists with their contempt for humanity,” she said.

The 41-year-old man who was killed in Wednesday’s knife attack has been praised, apparently for coming to the aid of the kindergarten group and saving the lives of other children.

Another two-year-old of Syrian origin suffered knife wounds to her neck.

A man of 72 suffered serious stab wounds and a kindergarten teacher suffered a broken arm. (BBC)

Fianna Fáil leader and newly elected Taoiseach Micheál Martin, (center right) and Fine Gael’s Simon Harris (center left) talk to reporters outside the government building in Dublin on Wednesday
Friedrich Merz said on day one as chancellor he would tell the interior ministry to take control of Germany’s borders

A CENTURY OF GRACE:

Celebrating the life of Phyllis Russell-Nelson

On January 18, 2025, Phyllis Russell-Nelson marked an extraordinary milestone—her 100th birthday. Born in St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, in 1925, Phyllis has lived a life defined by resilience, kindness, and service, leaving a lasting impact on all who know her.

One of five siblings, Phyllis shares a special family distinction with her eldest sister, Mavis Riley, who will celebrate her 102nd birthday in February. Early on, Phyllis’s upbringing instilled in her the values of compassion and hard work, which shaped her remarkable journey and forged a strong sense of community.

While working as a housekeeper at Kingston Public Hospital in 1983, Phyllis met Henry Rigby, a patient from the Turks and Caicos

Islands (TCI). Her exceptional care and kindness went beyond her job description, as she brought him fresh fruits and ensured his needs were met. This act of selflessness earned her an invitation to visit TCI, where she embarked on a new chapter of her life. In 1984, Phyllis became part of the first group of staff at the iconic Club Med resort. For 12 years, she delighted guests and colleagues as a cook, earning a certificate of appreciation during the resort’s 25th anniversary for her outstanding service. She retired in 1996, leaving a legacy of dedication and excellence.

Phyllis has also been a pillar of the Wheeland community, where she has lived for over 40 years. A devoted member of the New Testament Church since 2010, she has inspired her church

family with her unwavering faith and commitment. Known for her vibrant humour and warm smile,

Phyllis’s ability to uplift those around her with encouraging words has made her beloved by many.

Her personal life is equally inspiring. Phyllis and her late husband, Rupert Nelson, shared a life of partnership until his passing in 2016. Together, they raised a family that now spans 4 children, 20 grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren, and 9 great-greatgrandchildren—a testament to her enduring legacy of love and unity.

Phyllis’s story is a reminder of the power of kindness, service, and faith. From her humble beginnings in Jamaica to her cherished role in the TCI community, she has touched countless lives. As she celebrates this monumental occasion, her family, church, and

community honour her as a beacon of grace, resilience, and joy. Happy 100th birthday, Phyllis!

Tina Turner’s lost Private Dancer song rediscovered

A song recorded for Tina Turner’s blockbuster album Private Dancer, that was presumed lost, has been rediscovered and received its first play on BBC Radio 2. Hot For You, Baby, was cut at Capitol Studios in Hollywood and originally intended to be an album track.

But it was ultimately jettisoned in favour of era-defining pop hits such What’s Love Got To Do With It, Better Be Good To Me and the album’s title track.

People with ADHD have shorter life expectancy and higher risk of mental health issues – study

Having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is associated with a shorter life expectancy and a greater risk of mental health issues, according to a new study of more than 30,000 people with the disorder in the United Kingdom.

Men diagnosed with ADHD had a reduction in life expectancy by 4 ½ years to nine years, while women’s life expectancy was shortened by 6 ½ years to 11 years, according to the study published Thursday in The British Journal of Psychiatry.

“Although many people with ADHD live long and healthy lives, our finding that on average they are living shorter lives than they should indicates unmet support needs,” said lead study author Dr. Liz O’Nions, honorary research fellow in clinical, education and health psychology at University College London, in a news release. “It is crucial that we find out the reasons behind premature deaths so we can develop strategies to prevent these in the future.”

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that’s commonly diagnosed in childhood but often lasts into adulthood. People with ADHD have imbalanced neurotransmitters, one of which is dopamine. It’s a key neurotransmitter in the brain’s prefrontal cortex required to help us with executive function and self-regulation skills, which involve planning, focusing and

sustaining attention, remembering instructions and multitasking.

People with ADHD may feel restless or have trouble concentrating, staying organized, managing their time or prioritising, hyperfocusing or controlling their impulses. These symptoms can affect all areas of life.

At least 3% to 4% of adults in the UK have ADHD, with the prevalence in children estimated to be at least 4%. But it’s possible many more people go undiagnosed, which could mean the life expectancy gap the study authors found could be overestimated, they said.

The new findings affirm those of recent research, such as a 2022 study that found greater premature death risk among people with ADHD or autism in both the United States and Europe. But the current study, to the authors’ knowledge, is the first to use mortality data to employ the life-table method: a statistical technique for analyzing death rates and the probabilities of survival or death at different age intervals.

The research team reviewed primary care data from 30,029 adults with ADHD and compared them with nearly 300,400 participants who didn’t have ADHD but were matched by age, sex and primary care practice.

Besides the differences in life expectancy, the analysis also revealed ADHD to be linked with a higher risk of mental health issues — such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicide and personality

Symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, include difficulties with concentration, organisation and time management

disorders. Autism, intellectual disabilities, harmful habits such as smoking or “potentially harmful alcohol use,” and physical health problems including diabetes or high cholesterol were more common in this group as well.

WHY ADHD COULD AFFECT ONE’S LIFE EXPECTANCY

The study is “striking” but is based on observational data that inevitably leaves many important questions unanswered since a cause-and-effect relationship can’t be entirely established, Dr. Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at the Open University in England, said in a news release. He was not involved

in the research.

“What can be done about this? That depends on whether the reductions in average life expectancy are caused (somehow) by ADHD, and if they are, how they are caused,” McConway said.

In the UK, treatment for ADHD and accompanying conditions is lacking, especially for adults since recognition of adult ADHD is still evolving, experts said. This insufficiency could partly explain the differences in life expectancies.

But there also may be “some factors that arise before birth or in very early life that could separately affect the chance that a person is later diagnosed with ADHD” and dies earlier than usual, McConway said. Those could be genetic or

LinkedIn accused of using private messages to train AI

A US lawsuit filed on behalf of LinkedIn Premium users accuses the social media platform of sharing their private messages with other companies to train artificial intelligence (AI) models.

It alleges that in August last year, the world’s largest professional social networking website “quietly” introduced a privacy setting, automatically opting users in to a programme that allowed third parties to use their personal data to train AI.

It also accuses the Microsoftowned company of concealing its actions a month later by changing its privacy policy to say user information could be disclosed for AI training purposes.

A LinkedIn spokesperson told BBC News that “these are false

The filing also said LinkedIn changed its ‘frequently asked questions’ section to say that users

could choose not to share data for AI purposes but that doing so would not affect training that had already taken place.

environmental. Additionally, the authors either didn’t have details on, or didn’t control for, race or ethnicity and socioeconomic factors, which can affect life expectancy.

The researchers also couldn’t determine “when ADHD was diagnosed in relation to other medical problems, or the impact of treatment,” said Dr. Oliver Howes, professor of molecular psychiatry at King’s College London, in a news release. Howes wasn’t involved in the study.

However, “things like differences in smoking, alcohol use, and several health conditions are likely to be consequences of the ADHD, to a large extent,” McConway said — meaning those vices and conditions could explain how ADHD could affect death rates or lead to shorter life expectancies.

Details on the causes of early deaths of study participants also weren’t available to the researchers.

TREATING ADHD

People with ADHD “have many strengths and can thrive with the right support and treatment,” said senior study author Dr Josh Stott, professor of aging and clinical psychology at University College London, in a news release.

Experts on the topic have said that addressing the issue of premature mortality among people with ADHD starts with health care providers who should routinely collect details on behavioral and medical conditions and health outcomes related to the disorder. Doing so can help providers and patients address risk factors and prevent delays in treatment.

“LinkedIn’s actions... indicate a pattern of attempting to cover its tracks,” the lawsuit said.

“This behaviour suggests that LinkedIn was fully aware that it had violated its contractual promises and privacy standards and aimed to minimise public scrutiny”.

The lawsuit was filed in a California federal court on behalf of a LinkedIn Premium user and “all others” in a similar situation.

It seeks $1,000 (£812) per user for alleged violations of the US federal Stored Communications Act as well as an unspecified amount for breach of contract and California’s unfair competition law.

According to an email LinkedIn sent to its users last year, it has

Some organizations have resources for how people with ADHD can increase their likelihood of engaging in tasks, habits or activities that can help improve their quality of life and life expectancy, including exercise, proper nutrition, dental care and sleep hygiene.

Mental health professionals specializing in ADHD can help patients develop coping skills for any symptoms that may lead to distress or other outcomes that negatively affect their lives.

They can also discuss whether ADHD medications would be useful. A study of nearly 150,000 Swedish people with ADHD, published in March 2024, found medication use was associated with a 19% decrease in mortality risk within two years post-diagnosis. (CNN)

The ultra-fast cancer treatments which could replace conventional radiotherapy

A pioneering new treatment promises to tackle a wider range of cancers, with fewer side-effects than conventional radiotherapy. It also takes less than a second.

In a series of vast underground caverns on the outskirts of Geneva, Switzerland, experiments are taking place which may one day lead to new generation of radiotherapy machines. The hope is that these devices could make it possible to cure complex brain tumours, eliminate cancers that have metastasised to distant organs, and generally limit the toll which cancer treatment exerts on the human body.

The home of these experiments is the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (Cern), best known to the world as the particle physics hub that developed the Large Hadron Collider, a 27 kilometre (16.7 mile)-long ring of superconducting magnets capable of accelerating particles to near the speed of light.

Arguably Cern’s crowning achievement was the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson, the so-called “God Particle” which gives other particles their mass and in doing so lays the foundation for everything that exists in the universe. But in recent years, the centre’s unique expertise in accelerating high-energy particles has found a new niche – the world

of cancer radiotherapy.

Eleven years ago, MarieCatherine Vozenin, a radiobiologist now working at Geneva University Hospitals (Hug), and others published a paper outlining a paradigm-shifting approach to traditional radiotherapy treatment which they called Flash. By delivering radiation at ultra-high dose rates, with exposures of less than a second, they showed that it was possible to destroy tumours in rodents while sparing healthy tissue.

Its impact was immediate. International experts described it as a seminal breakthrough, and it galvanised fellow radiobiologists around the world to conduct their own experiments using the Flash approach to treat a wide variety of tumours in rodents, household pets, and now humans.

The Flash concept resonated as it addressed some of the long-standing limitations of radiotherapy, one of the most common cancer therapies, which two-thirds of all cancer patients will receive at some point in their treatment journey. Typically delivered through administering a beam of X-rays or other particles over the course of two to five minutes, the total dose is usually spread across dozens of individual treatment sessions over up to eight weeks, to make it more tolerable

not enabled user data sharing for AI purposes in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. for the patient.

Over the past three decades, advanced imaging scans and stateof-the-art radiotherapy machines have made it possible to target an individual tumour with increasing precision. But the risk of damaging or deadly side effects is still present.

Vozenin cites the example of paediatric brain tumours, which can often be cured by blasting the brain with radiotherapy, but at a great cost. “The survivors are often left with lifelong anxiety and depression, while the impact of the radiation affects brain development, causing significant loss of IQ,” she says. “We’re [sometimes] able to cure these kids but the price they pay is high.”

Billy Loo, a professor of radiation oncology who runs the Flash sciences lab at Stanford University School of Medicine in the US, explains that tumours, especially those of larger volume, are rarely neatly segregated from the surrounding tissue. This means it’s often next to impossible to avoid harming healthy cells, so oncologists are often unable to use as high a dose as they would like, says Loo.

Cancer specialists have long believed that being able to boost the radiation dose would greatly enhance their ability to cure patients with difficult-to-treat cancers, according to Vozenin. For example, research has previously indicated that being able to increase the radiation dose in lung cancer patients with tumours that have metastasised to the brain could improve survival.

In recent years, animal studies have repeatedly shown that Flash makes it possible to markedly increase the amount of radiation delivered to the body while minimising the impact that it has on surrounding healthy tissue. In one experiment, healthy lab mice which were given two rounds of radiation via Flash did not develop the typical side effects which would be expected during the second round. In another study, animals treated with Flash for

head and neck cancers experienced fewer side effects, such as reduced saliva production or difficulty swallowing.

Loo is cautiously optimistic that going forwards, such benefits may also translate to human patients.

“Flash produces less normal tissue injury than conventional irradiation, without compromising anti-tumour efficacy – which could be game-changing,” he says. An additional hope is that this could then reduce the risk of secondary cancers, resulting from radiationinduced damage later in life, although it is still too early to know if that will be the case.

Now, increasing numbers of human trials are beginning to take place around the world. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio, US, is planning an early stage trial in children with metastatic cancer that has spread to their chest bones. Meanwhile, oncologists at Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland are conducting a Phase 2 trial – where the details are finessed, including the optimum dose, how effective the treatment is and if there are any side effects – for patients with localised skin cancer.

But the next phase of research is not only about testing whether Flash works in people. It’s also about identifying which kind of radiation is the best one to use.

A CHOICE OF PARTICLES

From carbon ions to protons and electrons, there are many ways of delivering radiotherapy, each with different applications and challenges. One of the most precise forms of radiotherapy is hadron therapy, delivered with carbon ions. But there are only 14 facilities which can deliver this in the entire world, each one costing an estimated $150m (£122m). Currently this therapy is delivered using a conventional dosing regime, in which the radiation is delivered over several minutes. However, with the Flash protocol the ions would be delivered in less than a second.

“High energy electrons can be

used to treat superficial tumours in the skin,” says André-Dante Durham Faivre, a radiation oncologist at Hug. “Photons, i.e. X-rays, or protons [a type of subatomic particle], can be used to treat deeper tumours, while we save carbon ions and helium particles for very specialised cases, as it’s only very, very big clinical centres that can offer that type of treatment. The particle accelerator needed to administer carbon ion radiotherapy is the size of a building.”

This is one tricky problem with Flash therapies. Because creating subatomic particles requires extremely complex particle accelerators, at the moment this treatment can only be delivered via vast pieces of equipment in specialist centres, which is expensive. This means patients will most likely need to travel long distances for their treatment – and while researchers hope that eventually Flash will be available to everyone who needs it, at the moment treatments such as proton therapy are only available to a relatively small minority of patients.

So far, protons have been the particle of choice for human Flash trials, both because they can penetrate up to 30cm (12in) into the body, enabling them to reach relatively deep internal organs, and because existing proton radiotherapy machines can be adapted relatively easily to deliver Flash dose rates.

In 2020, the University of Cincinnati Medical Centre launched the first ever clinical trial of Flash proton radiotherapy in patients whose primary cancer had metastasised to the bones, with early results suggesting that the treatment was just as effective as conventional radiotherapy and the incidence of adverse events was similar. Now, radiation oncologists at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine are hoping to launch their own trial later this year in patients with recurrent head and neck cancer. (BBC)

The hope is that these devices could revolutionise cancer treatments in the future

What you should know about carbonated water and weight loss

Fizzy, sparkling, carbonated or seltzer — no matter what you call it, water that tickles your nose is fun and refreshing, and for some, a welcome change from its flat cousin.

On social media, sparkling water has gained a following for its impact on body mass. Some believe fizzy water may increase weight, pointing to a February 2017 study that found carbonated beverages stimulate appetite by increasing ghrelin, the hunger hormone. However, that research was done in male rats and only 20 people and has never been replicated.

The more popular theory is that carbonated water may lead to weight loss. Fizzy bubbles may boost a feeling of fullness, and water itself helps the body burn fat by boosting metabolism — in fact, water is a critical part of lipolysis, which is how the body turns stored fat into energy.

A new study explores a third explanation: Carbonated water may also lower blood glucose levels. That’s beneficial for weight loss, experts say, because if blood sugar is kept on an even keel, with few spikes or dips, the body’s cells can more effectively burn fat between meals for energy.

“When carbonated water is consumed, CO2 is absorbed into the blood vessels in the stomach,” said study author Dr Akira Takahashi, a physician in the dialysis center at Tesseikai Neurosurgical Hospital in Shijonawate, Japan, in an email.

There are some benefits to carbonated water

While some carbonated water is natural, created as volcanic gases infuse the water in natural springs with bubbles and minerals, most sparkling water is made by forcing carbon dioxide, or CO2, into water under intense pressure.

Once in the blood, CO2 is rapidly converted into bicarbonate ions as part of a process that maintains pH balance. This conversion then causes red blood cells to become more alkaline, Takahashi said. This increased alkalinity accelerates the process of glucose consumption in red blood cells, thus lowering glucose levels.

Norovirus outbreak reported at shelter for California wildfire evacuees

First came the fires. Then, there was ash and contaminated water. Now, some survivors of the Southern California wildfires are dealing with outbreaks of norovirus and other stomach ailments at a shelter set up to help evacuees.

The Pasadena Public Health Department confirmed Friday that three people tested positive for norovirus among a cluster of 28 people who had “acute gastrointestinal illness” at the Pasadena Evacuation Shelter.

Norovirus can cause stomach cramps and severe vomiting and diarrhea, possibly leading to dehydration. Most people will get better without treatment in one to three days, but the disease is highly contagious and can spread quickly and easily, usually

through contaminated surfaces, food and water. Some groups, like people who are older or who have weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of severe illness.

The Pasadena Public Health Department said in an email that it was providing guidance and support to the American Red Cross, which is managing the shelter at the Pasadena Convention Center.

The Red Cross said it’s doing everything it can to keep residents safe.

“The health and well-being of residents in our care is a top priority,” said Stephanie Fox, media relations lead with the American Red Cross national headquarters.

Fox says health care workers are available for on-site care for anyone who feels sick. Kaiser

Keith Frayn, a professor emeritus of human metabolism at the University of Oxford in the UK, who was not involved in the study.

“If fizzy drinks were to be shown to lead to weight loss, it would much more likely be through effects on feelings of fullness,” Frayn said in a statement. “In the meantime, however, sugar-sweetened fizzy drinks are recognized as a source of excess calories and likely to do just the opposite.”

In addition, blood sugar levels were only temporarily lowered, Takahashi said, and the carbonated water would have a slight effect on calorie consumption.

in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, was built upon 2004 research by Takahashi and his team on hemodialysis, a process that occurs during kidney dialysis when blood is filtered to remove waste and excess water. During hemodialysis, CO2 enters the blood, just as it does when carbonated water is consumed.

While the November 2004 study did show blood sugar levels decrease when CO2 is added to blood, the new study concluded the amount of glucose burned during this process would not be enough for any significant weight loss.

“Red blood cells cannot fully ‘burn’ the glucose, and it will be recycled by the liver,” said

“Therefore, carbonated water alone is unlikely to contribute significantly to weight loss,” he said. “A balanced diet and regular exercise remain essential for effective weight management.”

USE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH

Studies have shown people who drank two cups of water before meals lost more weight than those who did not. Another study found people who replaced diet beverages with water also benefited by losing pounds.

“Some of the patients I see for weight loss never feel satisfied,” said Welstead, who was not involved in the new study. “These are the folks who tell me, ‘I’m always hungry and I’m always waiting for a snack,’ and I think

it can really help some of those people.”

Still, filling your belly with bubbly water can increase satiety and may be especially helpful for people who struggle with hunger pains, said registered dietitian Lori Welstead, who specializes in gastrointestinal nutrition at University of Chicago Medicine, a not-for-profit academic medical health system.

“But be mindful of excess or added sugars, including some of the fake sugars, because those may be negative metabolically,” she said.

Other patients say they benefit from fizzy waters because the bubbles help clear their esophagus and stomach and move food along in the digestive system, she said.

“Some people with a ‘slow’ stomach, so to speak, find carbonation helps with their gut motility,” Welstead said. “So we have some people for whom these sparkling or tonic waters can create fullness, and others for whom it helps with digestion.”

But don’t overdo it, she warns — more than one or two sparkling waters a day could really exacerbate gas and abdominal pain from the carbonation.

“If someone’s coming in and they’re saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m gassy, I’m bloated, I’m burping, I’m feeling so sick all day,’ it could be due to drinking five cans of carbonated water each day.” (CNN)

Permanente confirmed that it has set up a health care clinic at the evacuation center, and AltaMed Health Services is also providing medical care there.

“The spread of illness in congregate living situations, including shelters, is unfortunately common given the close quarters and communal spaces,” Pasadena Public Health said in an email.

“This year, the community has experienced higher than normal levels of Norovirus.”

Surveillance data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that norovirus outbreaks are worse than they’ve been in more than a decade.

Nearly 500 outbreaks were reported between August and midDecember, according to CDC data,

a third more than at the same time in the previous season.

California is not part of the National Outbreak Reporting System that the CDC uses for norovirus surveillance, but wastewater surveillance data from another program, WastewaterSCAN, shows that norovirus levels are higher than the national average in many testing locations in the state.

Manchester City have signed Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for 70m euros (£59m).

The 25-year-old has agreed a contract until June 2029, with addons rising to £4m.

Marmoush has scored 15 goals in 17 Bundesliga games this season, second only to England captain Harry Kane’s 16 for Bayern Munich.

“Manchester City is one of the biggest clubs in the world over the past 10 years, so it was not a question,” Marmoush said.

“It’s a pleasure and an honour for me and my family to be representing Manchester City. It makes them happy; it makes me happy that my dreams are becoming a reality.

“The last two seasons have been great, but it is just the beginning for me.”

City have also signed 19-yearold Brazilian defender Vitor Reis

from Palmeiras for £30m and Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for £34m in the January transfer window.

Marmoush, who has played as a striker, a number 10 and a winger, said: “On the pitch I am fast, good on the ball, I try to see where the spaces are and exploit the spacesand I’m dangerous.

“My main strength I would say is that I always want to win - that is from a character point of view.”

City director of football Txiki Begiristain said Marmoush has “outstanding pace and awareness” and that his versatility is a “really valuable asset”.

Marmoush began his career with Wadi Degla in the Egyptian Premier League, before signing for VfL Wolfsburg in 2020.

He had loan spells at FC St Pauli and VfB Stuttgart before his 2023 move to Frankfurt, for whom he scored 37 goals and made 20 assists in 67 games. (BBC)

Real Madrid have become the first football club to generate more than 1bn euros in annual revenue, according to analysis by Deloitte.

The Spanish club retain top spot in Deloitte’s Money League study with revenue of 1.05bn euros (£883m) from a 2023-24 season in which they won La Liga and the Champions League.

Manchester City are again second with revenue of £708m.

They won an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title and the Club World Cup and European Super Cup last season.

Paris St-Germain (£681m), Manchester United (£651m) and Bayern Munich (£646m) complete the top five.

Aston Villa enter the top 20 after competing in Europe last season for the first time since 2011.

Nine Premier League clubs are in the top 20, with Arsenal,

Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham retaining their places.

Lyon are the only other new club, with Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt dropping out.

A further five Premier League clubs are in the top 30, with Brighton 21st after competing in the Europa League for the first time in their history.

Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham and Wolves are ranked 26th to 29th.

Revenues for the top 20 clubs rose by 6% to a record £9.47bn.

Matchday revenue was the fastest growing revenue stream, rising by 11% to £1.77bn, helped by an increase in stadium capacity, ticket prices and premium hospitality.

Real benefited most from an increase in matchday revenues, generating £210m - double last year’s figure - after renovation of their Bernabeu Stadium.

Barcelona dropped from fourth to sixth after a £53m fall in matchday revenue, with games played at a smaller stadium while the Nou Camp is redeveloped.

Commercial revenue remained the largest revenue source in the Money League, rising 10% to £4.14bn and accounting for 44% of total revenue, helped by the hosting of non-football live events such as concerts.

“Money League clubs continue to break records with ongoing growth in commercial and matchday revenues,” said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte sports business group.

Total broadcast revenue remained at £3.64bn because each of the big five leagues - the Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, German Bundesliga, France’s Ligue 1 and Italy’s Serie A - are in the same domestic broadcast cycle. (BBC)

Keys stuns Swiatek to set up Sabalenka title showdown

Madison Keys saved a match point before stunning world number two Iga Swiatek to set up an Australian Open final against twotime defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Keys claimed a shock 5-7 6-1 7-6 (10-8) victory over five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek to reach the second major final of her career.

Poland’s Swiatek served for the match at 6-5 in the third set and held match point but Keys saved it, broke back and then recovered from 7-5 down in a fraught tiebreaker to advance.

Keys said: “The third set was so up and down. There were so many big points and break point chances. I feel I blacked out at one point and I was just there running around.”

Keys’ victory came after Belarusian top seed Sabalenka

earned the chance to become the first woman in 26 years to win three successive Australian Open titles with a commanding 6-4 6-2 win over close friend Paula Badosa.

While Keys has achieved a career-best Australian Open run, Sabalenka is aiming to emulate Martina Hingis’ three straight titles between 1997-99.

“I have goosebumps. I am so

proud of myself and my team that we were able to put ourselves in such a situation,” Sabalenka said.

“If I put my name in history it will mean the world for me. I couldn’t even dream of it.”

Swiatek’s loss also means Sabalenka will retain the world number one ranking after the tournament.

Swiatek had been in imperious form in Melbourne, losing just 14 games across her five matches before the semi-finals.

For context, only three players in history have dropped fewer games in making the last four at the Australian Open in a 128-player draw during the Open era.

However, the four-time French Open winner was undone by an inspired Keys, determined to win an Australian Open semi-final at the third attempt.

A messy start featuring five breaks of serve in the opening six games set the tone for an awkward night under Rod Laver Arena roof for Swiatek, who broke for a fourth time to take the first set before capitulating in the second.

Keys took just 27 minutes to overwhelm Swiatek reeling off five straight games to force a deciding set.

Both players saved numerous break points as the tension ramped up during an enthralling, highquality deciding set.

Swiatek eventually took her eighth opportunity to break for a 6-5 lead but, after failing to take her first match point, conceded serve with a double fault.

A winner-takes-all tie-break was what Keys and the match deserved but Swiatek looked to be in control of it at 7-5 up.

Suzuki headlines 2025 Baseball Hall of Fame class, receiving 99.7% of the vote

Beloved in Japan and in the US, Ichiro Suzuki now has a permanent home in Cooperstown, New York.

Suzuki, 51, cements himself in baseball lore, becoming the first Japanese player to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Suzuki, in his first year of eligibility, received 99.7% of the vote, one vote shy of it being unanimous. New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is still the only player to be elected with 100% of the vote.

In this year’s class, Suzuki joins starting pitcher CC Sabathia and closer Billy Wagner. They were elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and will join the Classic Baseball Era Committee electees, the late Dick Allen and Dave Parker, for enshrinement. The induction ceremony is July 27.

Before there was Shohei Ohtani, it was all about Suzuki, who captivated Japan and the US when he made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners in 2001

as an outfielder. While pitchers, including Hideo Nomo, had already played in the US, Suzuki made seismic waves as the first Japanese position player to sign with a major league club.

He immediately was a star, and he was immediately a success. Winner of the American League Most Valuable Player Award and AL Rookie of the Year Award, Suzuki led the AL with a .350 batting average and was tops in all of baseball with 242 hits and 56

Coventry aims to challenge ‘status quo’ at IOC

Kirsty Coventry hopes to “challenge the status quo” at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) should she be elected as its first female president.

The 41-year-old former swimmer would also become the youngest person and the first from outside Europe or North America to head the organisation in its 130year history should she see off six other candidates and succeed Thomas Bach in March’s vote.

The Zimbabwean, who is Africa’s most-decorated Olympian, wants to go further in empowering female athletes by putting in place stronger safeguarding procedures and providing more support for mothers.

“I want to show people and women across Africa and the world: ‘Don’t be afraid of anything’,” Coventry told BBC Sport Africa.

“If you believe in something and know you can lead an organisation, don’t be too scared to put your hand up and do it.

“It’s time for women in Africa to

stand up and lead, to not be afraid of leading, and to not be afraid of leading in a different way.”

Coventry won seven medals, including two golds, across the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Games, and has served as her country’s minister of sport, arts and recreation since September 2018.

She is also currently leading IOC commissions overseeing progress on the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics and 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Coventry says her bid to become IOC president is motivated by her desire to “give back” to the Olympic movement which has changed her life “for the better”.

Describing herself as being at “the crossroads between the older generation and the younger generation”, she intends to embrace new technologies such as online streaming and artificial intelligence (AI) in order to “remain relevant”.

In 2004, Suzuki set a singleseason record with 262 hits and won his second batting title, with a .372 average.

Suzuki also shone on defense, winning the first of 10 consecutive Gold Glove awards his rookie year. Suzuki also was a 10-time All-Star in that same span from 2001-2010.

Suzuki, the first player with 10 consecutive seasons of 200-plus hits, became the 30th player to join the elite 3,000-hit club in 2016. He finished with 3,089 MLB hits and retired in 2019 after 19 seasons.

Suzuki’s combined MLB and Japan statistics give him the most hits in baseball history with 4,367, surpassing the late Pete Rose (4,256 MLB hits). To go with his career batting average of .311, Suzuki also stole 509 bases.

“We saw, for the first time, NFL games over Christmas Day being streamed on Netflix.

“What does that look like for us? That is going to be very important as we move into the future.

“I do believe that if we can open up opportunities in these new areas, we create more fans which should in turn bring new revenue opportunities.”

Meanwhile, Coventry believes AI could benefit athletes on her home continent by helping them gain better access to training tools, doctors and nutritionists.

ATHLETES

As the only woman in the IOC presidential race, Coventry is keen to support female athletes, particularly around what she describes as “sensitive topics”.

The introduction of a dedicated room for nursing mums at the most recent Olympics is one particular step which she wants to build on.

“This is a great program,” she said.

“We’re going to help mothers come to the Games, and we’re going to cover that extra ticket. For me, those are the kinds of programs that help more athletes than just a select few.” Yet instances of gender based

violence suffered by female athletes, particularly in East Africa, have highlighted a deeper problem. World Athletics has already identified campaigning on that issue as a priority but Coventry aims to take that further.

“If we have an Olympian that’s doing some incredible work on gender based violence, how do we support that?” she explained.

“Is there a sponsor [or] philanthropist that, as the IOC, we can reach out to and put in touch with that Olympian to amplify what they’re doing - to take their voice, their message, from one community to an entire country, to an entire continent?” (BBC)

England thrashed in first T20 as Australia retain Ashes

‘Awe-inspiring’ - Hamilton has first test

in Ferrari F1 car

Lewis Hamilton said his first test in a Ferrari Formula 1 car was “aweinspiring” and “one of the best feelings of my life”.

The 40-year-old seven-time champion completed 30 laps of Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in cold, damp conditions on Wednesday in a 2023 Ferrari F1 car.

Hamilton said: “When I started the car up and drove through that garage door, I had the biggest smile on my face.

“It reminded me of the very first time I tested a Formula 1 car. It was such an exciting and special moment, and here I am, almost 20 years later, feeling those emotions all over again.

“I already knew from the outside how passionate the Ferrari family is, from everyone in the team to the tifosi [fans].

“But to now witness it first hand as a Ferrari driver has been awe-inspiring. That passion runs through their veins and you can’t help but be energised by it.

“I’m so grateful for the love I have felt from everyone in Maranello this week, we have a lot of work to do but I can’t wait to get started.”

Finishing his driving just after 11:00 local time (10:00 UK), Hamilton handed the car over to team-mate Charles Leclerc, who competed 14 laps in the afternoon.

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur said: “As is the case every year, the first time you go out on track is a bit like the first day back at school and quite an emotional feeling, especially today as it was Lewis’ first day as part of the team. Welcoming a new driver is always an important moment.

“Maybe today was less special for Charles, but it was good to see him fit, relaxed and keen to go racing again.”

Hamilton’s run in the SF-23 -

the most recent car he is allowed to drive under F1’s testing restrictions - is part of his acclimatisation work with his new team.

His test follows two days of work at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, of which the Fiorano track is a part.

Hamilton is also expected to test at Spain’s Circuit de BarcelonaCatalunya in the coming weeks before experiencing the team’s 2025 model at its launch on 19 February.

Hamilton will be limited to a total of 1,000km (621 miles) of what is known as testing of previous cars running by F1’s regulations.

The test will help him learn the way the Ferrari engine operates and allow him to build trust and working practices with his new race engineer Riccardo Adami and the rest of the team.

Adami worked with Carlos Sainz for the past four years and before that four-time champion Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton has driven only Mercedes engines throughout his 18-year F1 career.

Modern F1 engines are 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids with sophisticated energy recovery systems and complicated control processes, many of which are operated by the driver in the cockpit.

Although the multiple power and performance modes of the various engines are all designed to do similar functions, each manufacturer has different software and operating procedures, with drivers requiring time to become familiarised.

The test was held behind closed doors. It has drawn significant attention and there were crowds of fans standing on the bridge overlooking Fiorano for a glimpse of the team’s new driver.

Australia retained the Women’s Ashes at the earliest opportunity with a 57-run thrashing over England in the first T20 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

England slumped to 141 all out in 16 overs after being set an imposing 199 to win, despite Sophia Dunkley’s brilliant 59 from 30 balls in her first appearance of the tour.

Dunkley put England in a great position by reaching 62-3 from the six-over powerplay and 96-3 at the halfway mark.

But the last seven wickets fell for 45 runs as Australia turned the screw, with leg-spinners Alana King and Georgia Wareham taking 2-14 and 3-25 respectively.

The victory gives Australia an 8-0 points lead in the multi-format series, meaning England can only draw if they win all of their remaining matches.

Dunkley’s fearless approach from number three was all the more impressive considering England had suffered another top-order failure, with openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge falling for ducks in the first two overs.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 20 was the next top score as England buckled under the run-rate pressure, but they also paid the price for conceding too many runs via some loose bowling and several mistakes in the field despite winning the toss.

Beth Mooney made 75 from 51 balls at the top of the order for Australia, but she was dropped by Amy Jones on 16 and there was another missed opportunity on 23 when a miscommunication between Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean saw them leave a straightforward catch to one another and it eventually plugged in the outfield.

Sophie Ecclestone’s exceptional figures of 2-26 were an outlier in an unconvincing bowling effort, as every other bowler finished with an economy rate of more than eight an over.

The second of three T20s, all worth two points each, takes place in Canberra on Thursday. (BBC)

China to host BJK Cup Finals for next three years

The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will be held in Shenzhen, China for the next three years.

China, reigning champions Italy and six qualifiers will contest the week-long Finals in 2025, with a date yet to be confirmed.

Three venues in Shenzhen are being considered - including the 12,000 capacity Shenzhen Bay Sports Arena, which staged the WTA Finals in 2019.

Prague, Glasgow, Seville and Malaga were chosen as hosts for the

first four editions, but organisers say a global event of this nature cannot stay in Europe for too long.

“The announcement demonstrates our commitment to bringing the passion and excitement of nation v nation team tennis to markets around the world,” Billie Jean King said.

In the tournament, formerly called the Fed Cup, 18 teams split into six groups of three in qualifying, with the group winners progressing to the Finals.

Great Britain have been drawn

alongside Germany and the Netherlands in Group F for April’s qualifying competition.

Canada, who won the competition in 2023, meet Japan and Romania in Group A, with Brazil, the Czech Republic and Spain competing in Group B. Slovakia, USA and Denmark are in Group C, while fourth-seeded Australia take on Kazakhstan and Colombia in Group D. Poland, Switzerland and Ukraine make up Group E.
