Attorney Norman Saunders Jr Nearly a dozen fire units responded to the scene of the plane crash

Four killed in plane crash FOUR people were killed when a small private aeroplane crashed in Miami moments after taking off on route to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to CBS Miami the twin engine plane crashed on Wednesday (February 11) in the area of SW 144th Street and Krome Avenue.

The Beechcraft 1900 took off from Reliance Aviation at Tamiami Airport, now known as Miami Executive Airport, at about 2.45pm with four men on board.

All four people, who have been identified as pilot Raul Chirivella, Roberto Cavaniel, Juan Carlos Betancourt and another unidentified person, are confirmed dead.

One witness said: “I could see it

struggling to maintain its height. It was pitched like this and I could hear the engine roaring and it was trying to make it.”

around and stuck a fence.

The fence bordered an elderly couple’s property. Clara Arcia, 89, and Feliberto Trujillo, 86, were outside eating a late lunch at the time of the crash.

Trujillo said he saw a lot of fire and explosions and that they could feel the heat.

The plane, which can hold up to 18 people, was headed to Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The group in town to purchase plane parts before heading to the TCI and then Venezuela.

According to Miami International spokesman Gregory Chin, the pilot called in an engine problem and was trying to turn around when he crashed.

Nearly a dozen fire units responded to the scene.

Norman Saunders Jr for trial in 2016 A SEPARATE trial will be held on October 10, 2016, for local attorney Norman Saunders Jr who is charged with three counts of money laundering.

Saunders was initially named in the indictment against former Premier Michael Misick, several members from Misick’s Cabinet and others.

However, his case was severed from the others for a number of reasons, one of which was on the request of his lawyer last year.

On Tuesday (February 10), Andrew Mitchell, lead Prosecutor with the Special Investigations and Prosecution Team (SIPT) proposed the October date for trial before Justice Paul Harrison in the Supreme Court.

He said there is now no prospect of the main trial being finished this year.

Saunders will stand trial after the main trial has concluded.

On January 6, 2014, he pleaded not guilty to the three offences.

He is accused of assisting another to retain the benefit of criminal conduct contrary to section 28(1) (b)

of the Proceeds of Crime Ordinance 1998.

This charge accuses Saunders of entering into an arrangement between August 1, 2005 and October 7, 2007 whereby McAllister Hanchell’s criminal proceeds were used to secure funds that were placed at Hanchell’s disposal, knowing that the former Natural Resources Minister was engaged in criminal conduct.

In the second count, he is accused with entering into or becoming concerned in an arrangement between October 8, 2007 and December 31, 2010, which he knew or suspected facilitated by whatever means, the acquisition, retention, use or control of criminal property by or on behalf of Hanchell.

The third count reads: “Between October 8, 2007 and December 31, 2010, Saunders acquired criminal property, namely monies transferred to him for the benefit of Hanchell.”

The charges against him were dropped in 2013, but were then retaken shortly after by the SIPT. (DELANA ISLES)

Tourism chiefs praise success of the country’s finances MOVERS and shakers in the TCI’s tourism industry expressed their delight at the state of Government finances this week.

Minister of Finance Washington Misick recently announced that the Government had an operating surplus in excess of $60 million for just three quarters of the 2014/2015 financial year.

In a press release this week the TC Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) said it was a job well done.

The board of directors stated: “Our marketing efforts never stop and the recent news will only propel us to achieve an even

greater surplus.

“We also congratulate our members for their marketing strategies as they constantly network with their travel partners in an effort to sell the destination, with many having representation in our target markets which is critical in remaining present in our travel partners’ minds.

“We can truly say that all members have been instrumental in the achievement of the destination’s strong revenue and we encourage continued partnership between Government and our members as a united front will only bring about even better

results.”

The board also stressed that the increase in tourism business should “trickle down” to most businesses in TCI, allowing TCIG to not only pay down its debt, but also to work on critical capital projects such as schools and infrastructure upgrades.

With new airlift being negotiated for the upcoming winter season along with an anticipated overall 80 percent or higher occupancy rate expected, the TCHTA board said it sees a year of great possibilities and achievements for TCI’s tourism and hospitality sector.

Judge Paul Harrison asked to recuse himself

AN APPARENT conflict of interest has arisen in the corruption case and the presiding judge Paul Harrison has been strongly encouraged to recuse (disqualify) himself.

Harrison’s dual roles as chairman of an anti-corruption parliamentary commission in Jamaica and as the judge presiding over a corruption trial in the Turks and Caicos Islands came under fire this past week (February 10).

Lawyers for some of the defendants raised concerns with Harrison’s impartiality and the perception of bias these two roles would have to a fair-minded observer.

Harrison is set to deliver his decision on whether to recuse himself on Friday, February 13, at the Myrtle Rigby Supreme Court at 10am.

He was appointed as chairman of the Parliamentary Integrity Commission in Jamaica on December 28, 2011, a position he currently occupies.

This body examines the annual statutory declarations of politicians to ensure that they adhere to the Corruption Prevention Act of that country.

As reported in the Jamaican press in December 2014, the commission made a presentation before the Joint Select Committee at which time representatives recommended that it should be declared unlawful for politicians and parliamentarians to accept gifts.

It is also reported that Harrison made statements before the select committee, namely that it is his personal view that gifts to parliamentarians should be classified by parliament as “presumptively unlawful”.

While still holding this post, Harrison was appointed on July 10, 2012 as the judge to preside over the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT) trial of former Premier Michael Misick and nine others.

Misick and his co-defendants are charged with several counts of corruption related offenses committed between August 2003 and March 2009.

Attorneys for Lisa Hall, Michael Misick, McAllister Hanchell and Thomas ‘Chal’ Misick made lengthy submissions for the judge to excuse himself from the trial due to perceived conflict of interests his position as the watchdog of parliamentarians’ receipt of gifts and or political donations would have to the public.

The thrust of the lawyers’ arguments was that a judge cannot simultaneously sit as the chairman of a tribunal espousing certain governance standards and at the same time sit in proceedings in which the very governance standards that he espouses in another arena comes up for judicial scrutiny and he sits to determine that.

Queen’s Counsel Douglas Leys questioned whether such a judge could deliver a fair judgement at the end of the trial.

He noted that these proceedings will involve the matter of gifts to politicians and parliamentarians and the issue of whether genuine gifts were given is bound to arise during the trial.

He added that the issue at hand is the judge’s role as part of a governance structure dealing with issues of integrity in public life as it pertains to public servants and parliamentarians.

He pointed out that it does not matter if there is actual or apparent bias on the judge’s part, but that his case rests on the point of apparent bias when considering the mind of the fair-minded observer.

Leys stated that a fair-minded observer would question how a judge who holds such views (in his capacity as chairman of anticorruption committee in Jamaica) can adjudicate fairly on these same issues in another jurisdiction (TCI).

He noted that it is difficult to have confidence in a judge while he is functioning in these dual roles and that he ought to recuse himself as he (Harrison) has made utterances in his capacity as chairman of the Jamaica commission that would put him in conflict with the fair minded observer of the TCI corruption trial.

He further urged the judge to recuse himself in the interest of justice.

Local counsel for Misick, Beryn Duncanson reinforced Leys point on the perception of bias. He said the test is that of apparent bias and the challenge is not of a personal nature.

He further stated that the same test that would be applied to a juror when it comes to the possibility of bias applies to a judge.

Duncanson said that if the defendants were being tried by a jury, a juror would be subject to scrutiny as it relates to his or her association if they were in Harrison’s position.

He added that there would be no doubt to anyone that such a juror would need to be discharged forthwith.

The lawyer also pre-empted any arguments related to delays and costs of the trial should Harrison recuse himself.

He said that these are not adequate considerations and that when it comes to the interests of justice they

are not valid.

Queen’s Counsel, Jerome Lynch, representing McAllister Hanchell, submitted that while Harrison’s chairmanship of the anti-corruption commission was reported in the press, it was reported as a past appointment prior to his taking up the judgeship in the TCI. He further questioned the judge whether there is anything else that the court needs to know about him with relation to the case.

Harrison answered “No”.

He reiterated the other lawyers’ point that the judge’s appointments in Jamaica and in TCI have a direct correlation and he should thus recuse himself from the case.

SIPT Special Prosecutor, Andrew Mitchell made brief submissions following the defence attorneys’.

He informed the court that the Crown is not taking sides on the issue of recusal.

The challenge to Harrison’s judgeship came just as he was prepared to preside over the pretrial review and case management of a trial which still does not have a commencement date.

Earlier this year, the defendants won a decision to have the trial delayed until a petition to the Privy Council is heard and determined.

The Privy Council is set to deliberate on the independence and impartiality of the judicial tribunal.

Another petition to the council deals with the Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold Justice Harrison’s judgement last year that the ten defendants should be tried by a judge without a jury.

Harrison’s appointment by Governor Peter Beckingham in November 2014 for an indefinite period, starting from January 2015, is also currently up for review by the Chief Justice.

Healthcare investigation

A THOROUGH investigation into InterHealth Canada’s provision of secondary healthcare is set to take place soon.

A private member’s motion that called for an in-depth look at the costly public service was carried in the House of Assembly recently.

How do you view the level of care provided at the TCI’s two hospitals? Is it value for money? What changes would you like to see?

Heads will roll

Many people who have had a loved one or friend use the hospital(s) have been seriously disappointed.

In two instances of our own, two close friends died. A brother was sent home with pneumonia, returned the same day and was then sent out as an emergency to the Dominican Republic.

A local friend diagnosed with terminal cancer was sent home time after time with off the shelf pain pills.

If this is healthcare, give us back the old system.

Before Ewing signed up for this ultraexpensive mess, another brother suffering from congestive healthcare was treated at Myrtle Rigby Health Clinic and his life saved.

Cost - $350. Let the people do the audit and heads will roll.

Terrible care

The 2008 literature promised high class care for all residents for a single $10 co-pay.

Now only those on a payroll are covered and the treatment is done in Nassau, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic. Before it was the USA. However since the PNP government would not pay the USA hospitals running up millions in bills, that is no longer an option.

Many folks we know now dig in our pockets and go to the USA. We are all paying millions for this mess but few have health cards to access what I think is terrible care.

Doctor Ewing is at the bottom of this mess.

Who will do the audit, another PNP?

Change unlikely

One has to be realistic about what service can

be expected, given the size of the population here.

It has to be of a tertiary level clinical service rather that top flight sophisticated medical treatments.

Whilst the latter used to be referred to Miami (where overall the care is top rate), for financial reasons it is now farmed out to the Bahamas, Dominican Republic etc where although good at times the standards can vary alarmingly.

Having said as much the costs to this country are alarmingly high as many would consider we are footing a bill commensurate to top level Miami care.

It seems we are mortgaged up to our hat bands for years ahead.

It very doubtful whether we will discover what really went on with the initial deal that was struck or whether we will ever discover what really goes on financially.

It is probably too embarrassing for either the British or the local governments, who were complicit in this.

Probably any enquiry will find what is expected of it to find. Sweet nothing eg. a whitewash!

Don’t expect any significant changes.

Investigation needed

This demand for an investigation into this blood sucking beast is critical, needed and overdue.

The Government must be willing however to stand its ground and to fight for what’s right.

Do they have the will and resolve to stay the course when the British start to play games?

It is established that public servants who were working on proper regulatory procedures for the InterHeath Canada contract were cashiered, handed over to the Integrity Commission, laws were ignored and people fired.

We are now five years down the road,

too many deaths, cries of malpractice by families.

Then there is the ongoing secret contract that was leaked by the PDM’s 2012 campaign to the public.

Yet the British do not care and remain committed to this billion dollar rip-off.

It will take eternal vigilance, Rufus Ewing like pre-2012 demonstrations, resolve of the people to expose this.

It is not value for money, we are paying too much and demanded so much, but so much secrecy!

Why the secrecy and why the need for it?

I would like to see an independent healthcare regulator, a body established by law, not established by the contract - with the healthcare economists, senior economists, medical personnel, auditors and people who can question a bill or invoice.

That will stop the scamming and billing.

There needs to be an end to secrecy. There needs to be an investigation into all of these deaths.

No reality

I can’t find a job and had my health card was cancelled. The local clinic now wants $200 for a visit to the nurse.

Meanwhile the ministers collect a quarter of a million per year in salary and benefits and they have health cards.

This Government is out of touch with the reality of the ordinary TC Islander.

Northwest Point Resort homeowners clean up the area

Bags of garbage collected during the clean-up

HOMEOWNERS at Northwest Point Resort in Providenciales worked together on Monday, February 2, to pick up about 26 garbage bags of trash along the beach.

About 26 people participated, including several staff members.

Organisers said that the event exceeded their expectations.

In addition to cleaning garbage off of the beach, another team of homeowners worked at picking up garbage along the road that led to the nature park.

Some of the items collected included plastic containers, glass crates, rope, fishing line, pallets, car parts, clothing and a homemade raft.

Homeowner Tash Kelly said that it was estimated that half a tonne of garbage was collected from the beach and the roadside in just two

hours.

“The roadside is still in rough shape and one of the collectors mentioned it would take another week to make a dent in the garbage.

“Daily, individual homeowners walk the beach and pick up garbage during their vacations at Northwest Point Resort.”

Kelly added that they were humbled and overwhelmed by the turn out of people for their first annual homeowner beach clean-up event.

She said that next year they will have heavy duty bags, better gloves, and cutters to reduce the size of items.

Premier blasts British Opposition leader on ‘tax haven’ statements

PREMIER Rufus Ewing has called out United Kingdom Opposition Leader, Edward Miliband for published statements he recently made regarding the TCI being a tax haven.

Miliband is reported in the UK press as stating that the UK overseas territories (OT) are not complying with UK directives on beneficial ownership of companies and public central registries of such.

In a statement to the press on Tuesday (February 10), Ewing stated that as Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, he is yet to receive or have sight of any correspondence from the UK Labour leader in respect of this subject at hand or any other subject.

The release continued: “However, I note the letter of Chief Minister Picardo of Gibraltar to Mr Miliband and wish to align, in most parts, the Turks and Caicos Islands’ position with that of Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, and that of the overseas territories that stand in solidarity on this issue.”

Ewing stated that the TCI Government takes exception to the statement made by Miliband, in referring to the jurisdiction as a “tax haven”.

He added that the TCI is a well regulated and compliant financial services jurisdiction that has complied with the FATF Standards, Global Forum Standards and have signed numerous Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEAs), including the US-FATCA, UKFATCA and multilateral agreement on automatic exchange of information in Berlin on 29 October 2014, among numerous others agreements.

He further noted that the Islands, represented by the Deputy Premier in June 2014 along with other UK OT leaders, supported prime minister David Cameron during his presidency of the G8 as the United Kingdom made commitments to improve transparency of information to combat tax evasion, money laundering and financing of terrorism.

“Prime minister Cameron acted on his commitment and is progressing the establishment of a publicly available central registry of beneficial ownership of companies in the UK and is encouraging all of the UK OTs, which, Cameron emphatically stated are not tax havens, to follow suite,” Ewing said.

Keep the TCI measles free – Ministry of Health AN OUTBREAK of measles in the USA has prompted the Ministry of Health and Human Services to urge residents to take precautions to keep the region measles free.

Several states have been affected by the disease, with more than 100 cases reported.

The Caribbean has so far been successful in maintaining a measlesfree status since 1991.

A press release from the Ministry of Health and Human Services said: “In light of the strong travel ties between the Caribbean and the USA, and given that we are in the midst of the tourism high-season, the Ministry of Health and Human Services encourages local residents and visitors to be watchful for feverrash syndromes.”

Measles spreads quickly among unvaccinated people. The majority of the adults and children that have reported cases of measles in the US did not get vaccinated or do not know whether they have been vaccinated.

“Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe, effective and highly recommended,” the release said.

“Maintaining high vaccination coverage is very important and it’s the best protection we have against disease outbreaks.”

Measles is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease that occurs over a period of two to three weeks. It spreads through the air by coughing and sneezing.

Measles starts with a fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes and sore throat, and is followed by a rash that spreads all over the body.

A person with measles can spread the virus to others for about eight days, four days before the rash appears and four days after the rash appears.

People are protected against the disease in two ways - through vaccination and through previous infection.

The vaccine is given in two doses in the TCI, the first at age one-yearold and the second at age two-yearsold.

Children who receive the vaccine at the age of one are protected up to 98 percent until the second dose is due at age two.

The Turks and Caicos Islands is currently measles free.

“Over the years, the first dose of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine coverage has been 95 percent to 98 percent.

“However, children remain at risk continued 

devised an action plan and conducted a public consultation on the issues of maintenance of legal and beneficial ownership information and the establishment of a central or public register of beneficial ownership information.

This consultation was recently concluded and Cabinet has reviewed the results, the Premier said.

He stated that it is the position of the TCI that it will continue to comply with all of the global standards as issued by FATF, Global Forum, AML Directives, G20 Principles and will continue to improve systems, in ways that support sound business growth locally and globally.

However, he added, until such time as there is global agreement on appropriate exemptions and

safeguards, and a public central registry becomes the internationally practiced standard, the TCI will continue to follow its current regime.

He said: “Perhaps it would have been more helpful to these Turks and Caicos Islands and other overseas territories for the Labour leader to have sought an audience with the leaders of the overseas territories during our many visits to the UK. “The most recent being for the purpose of the Joint Ministerial Conference meeting during which meeting, the issue of beneficial ownership was of key debate.”

Ewing said that such an engagement would have allowed Miliband to familiarise himself with OT’s jurisdictions, and perhaps he might have discovered that the OTs

are not tax havens as he accuses, but, in fact, well and better regulated financial services jurisdictions than many larger jurisdictions.

Miliband would have then been in a better position to more appropriately inform his party’s manifesto in support of assisting the TCI and other OTs economies, as one would expect of responsible leadership, rather than utilising outdated and damaging descriptions that undermine the strident efforts made

by OTs to date to meet and in some cases surpass internally accepted standards.

The Premier added that the TCI is committed to support and implement any global transparency initiatives and directives that will combat tax evasion, money laundering and financing of terrorism.

He added that discussions are welcomed with the UK as a part of the solidarity partnership among OTs on the eventual maintenance of a central registry, but this will be done cautiously and with sober thought to the appropriate level that the information should be made public.

“We must ensure that we are supporting law enforcement agencies and thwarting criminals, all while ensuring the sustainable growth and development of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the protection of the fundamental constitutional rights and privacy of the law abiding citizens and clients we serve.”

Referendum on independence included in constitutional recommendations

BY DELANA ISLES TWO thirds of the voter population of the Turks and Caicos Islands can pass a referendum for independence, a new proposed constitutional provision stipulates.

The motion was presented

by Premier Rufus Ewing during Wednesday’s (February 11) sitting of the House of Assembly.

The members were discussing the report of the Constitutional Review Committee and making adjustments and additions to the chairman’s report of proposed changes to the 2011 Constitution.

Ewing initially moved for the inclusion in the TCI constitution for an independent referendum to be made in accordance with the provisions within the Cayman Islands constitution.

The Cayman Islands’ constitution provision states: “A law enacted by the legislature may make provision to hold a referendum amongst persons registered as electors in accordance with section 90 of the constitution, on a matter or matters of national importance, when so resolved by the majority of elected members of the assembly…”

The Premier suggested that similar language be incorporated in the TCI. However, Minister of Finance Washington Misick stated that the matter should not be left open in that manner.

He said there should be language that speaks to the proportion of the vote.

Premier noted that the UK government only recognises two pathways for the TCI, contrary to the provisions of the United Nations (UN) Convention where the TCI should have many different pathways - either to stay British, have a free association, go through integration or go independent.

He said the British Government only recognises two – either stay British or get a referendum and go independent within two years.

“However, our constitution or any legislation does not make provision for a referendum so if we were to go and do a referendum – because they always say do a referendum, do a referendum – it is time the provision is made within the constitution for other pathways other than being British.

“So we need to put this in the

constitution,” Ewing added.

Governor’s appointed member, Lillian Misick however, reiterated the finance minister’s point that the provision should not be left openended, and neither should it be something that should be made with an Ordinance.

She added that it should be stipulated whether it is a third of the population, two thirds or seven eights.

She said it should be specified and that it should be the majority.

The Premier subsequently moved another motion that a provision be placed in the constitution for a referendum to be held and for that referendum to be deemed a majority when two thirds of the electorate vote in favour.

He said: “A referendum should constitute that the majority decision should not be left to the British.

“To a certain extent it should be left to the members of this House and to the people and I agree that it should be in the constitution.”

The motion was seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson.

Member for Five Cays, Sean Astwood however stated that while

the details of such a referendum should be held in legislation, he is concerned that two thirds of the votes cast would be required to pass such a motion.

He noted that they also need to say how many people are required to cast a vote to make the results of that referendum proper.

“Or we can end up with a referendum where only 500 people voted, and two thirds of 500 that means that 300 people would have decided what direction the country is going. We need to look at it from a holistic point of view,” Astwood added.

Minster of Border Control, DonHue Gardiner however challenged Astwood’s statements, saying that the member is completely wrong.

Gardiner said: “It would mean that 500 people took part, and while everybody else had an opportunity to take part, they abstained.”

“The fact that you abstained and you refused to, then whose fault is that?” the minister questioned.

Gardiner said that on the question of a referendum for independence, it is something that he does not support that it needs to be in the constitution.

“I have actually prepared a draft

for consideration for a Bill to be brought to the House that would require a referendum on the question of self-determination.”

He added that so far in the TCI’s relationship with the UK, the people have never really had a say in this and it is time that they have a say.

The minister said that he intends to ensure that the House has the opportunity to vote on a bill requiring a referendum in the next session of the House.

However, despite the disagreements, the motion was passed for inclusion within the revised list of recommendations for constitutional changes to be presented to the British government.

Subsequent to the vote, Minister of Environment George Lightbourne told the House that he has a serious problem with the percentage (two thirds) being what it is.

He therefore presented a motion that the two thirds majority that was passed earlier, should not be in the constitution itself.

Speaker of the House, Robert Hall however, advised that there needs to be further legal consultation on Lightbourne’s motion before it was voted on by the members.

Abandoned pups rescued, fighting for life

BY DELANA ISLES THREE pups were rescued by a Good Samaritan who found them duct taped in a cardboard box and discarded in bushes in sweltering temperature in Grace Bay last week Tuesday.

On Monday (February 9), one pup succumbed to hyperthermia after a body temperature reading of 108°F, while another is currently fighting for his life.

“We think the damage done to her was too much for her body to bear.

She was with her brother and sister and great foster mum and knew she was loved and that her life meant something,” Jane Parker-Rauw, the founder of Potcake Place, told the Weekly News this past week.

She said the rescuer found the pups while she was walking her dog in the vicinity of the rugby pitch in Grace Bay on February 3.

Parker-Rauw said that the dog started to bark frantically as they

were passing the area, prompting the owner to hack her way through the bushes where she made the discovery.

She added that the box was duct taped and deliberately thrown into bushes that were hard to access, consigning the animals to a cruel death.

“We have no idea how long it was there before this lady’s dogs came across it.”

When the pups were taken to the vet the body temperature of the now deceased female dog was 107.5°F and 104.5°F for the other two.

A dog’s normal resting temperature is about 100.5 to 102.5°F. Once a dog’s temperature rises above 105°F, physiological changes start to take place and the dog begins to experience the effects of heatstroke.

At 106 to 108°F the dog begins to suffer irreversible damage to the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract,

heart and brain.

The two surviving pups were eventually fostered by their rescuer and are receiving love, care and attention.

Parker-Rauw said that the two pups are going to be in foster care for quite a while after being in the situation they were in and suffering from hypothermia.

She said that if they recover then they will be put up for adoption.

“Can you imagine being placed in a box and taped up? It’s like being put in a coffin and being left to die.

“It’s a horrible, horrible, slow and painful death which no living animal should have to endure.

“It takes a very cold and sick minded person to take a living

animal, put it in a box, cover it with duct tape and throw it in a bush.

It’s a horrendous way of killing something,” she said.

What can people do instead of this brutal act?

She said there is no reason for someone to discard any animal in this manner as there are places and resources available that can be accessed without charge.

People need not give their names, as they can simply make arrangements to leave the dogs outside the door of the shelter, Parker-Rauw said.

She added that if they decide on euthanasia, then there is a vet on

island who can do this as humanely as possible.

“There is absolutely no reason in a country like this with educated, responsible people and resources available to do something like this.

There is no reason.”

She added: “If someone can make the effort and time it took to put three puppies in a cardboard box, tape it up, drive it somewhere and put it in a bush where no can find it… the amount of time that took, they can make a call and drop them off the next day.

“It’s just insanity.”

She said whoever is responsible for this dastardly act should be ashamed when there are people on island ready and willing to help.

‘A father, a mentor, a man of all sports’ – Joshua Gardiner loses battle with cancer

SPORTS expert, writer and proud Turks and Caicos Islander Joshua ‘Obed’ Gardiner died last week after a long battle with cancer.

He passed away aged 63 at Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in Providenciales at 8am on Friday (February 6).

Gardiner, from Five Cays, Providenciales, positively affected the lives of many people in the Turks and Caicos Islands and further afield during his lifetime.

He had a huge love for sports and his greatest wish was for his country to make its name in international sporting events.

In his earlier years he a top school boy athlete in the Bahamas, dominating in numerous events.

At the age of 16 he unofficially broke his age group world’s record in the triple jump, a feat of which he was very proud.

Sadly as a young man he was diagnosed with debilitating multiple sclerosis, but instead of deterring him it led him into coaching as a means of passing on his knowledge.

In his later years he enjoyed writing about sports and had a weekly column in the Turks and Caicos Weekly News.

Publisher and editor W Blythe Duncanson said that after more than five years writing articles for the newspaper his passing came with great sadness.

“We were struck by his broad and incisive knowledge of sport – local and international - and his prodigious capacity for turning out copy.

“Many times his articles were ahead of schedule and we had to beg him to slow down in order to catch up.

“We shall miss his well-informed pieces and his fearless penchant for provoking thought and controversy.”

Leader of the Opposition Sharlene Carwright Robsinson said that the TCI has lost a sports icon and an avid sports columnist.

“I am not an athlete by any stretch of the imagination but did not pick up an issue of the Weekly News without reading what the late Joshua ‘Obed’ Gardiner wrote,” she said.

“I had met him only in recent years and learnt quite a bit of him from his writings.

“His accomplishments were vast and varied but largely in the area of sports. It was as if he lived for sports.”

She explained that only since his passing did she learn that he contributed to sports in the Bahamas as well.

“Committed to his call and purpose to the very end, his life and death signals for a change in how

we honour those whose shoulders we stand on in the varied aspects of national life and also in the delivery of social and health services for the vulnerable.

“His contribution to sports in these Islands must be recognised and celebrated. May his soul rest in peace.”

Speaker of the House of Assembly, Robert Hall, during Wednesday’s sitting of the House of Assembly in Grand Turk paid a tribute to Gardiner.

“Many of you would have known or would have heard of him.

I recall actually, flying with him to Grand Turk on his first flight after he came back from the Bahamas to take up his appointment here in Grand Turk.

“We were never close friends but I admired his knowledge and expertise in the sports area, and I often read his articles in the newspaper.

“To his family here in the Turks and Caicos and in the Bahamas I do extend my deepest sympathy in this their hour of bereavement.”

Scores of people offered their condolences and tributes on a public social media forum.

Quincy Jamy Edward Williams said: “Yes he was a teacher in many ways, a father, a mentor to many, a man of all sports.

“He was a great man in many ways, but most of all he was a child of God.” Kelvin Bain said: “This is really sad news for me. I would always talk with him. He always gave me word of encouragement to keep on pressing on.

“People that didn’t know him would that he was nobody but he was a great man. I told some people of his accomplishment in his life. I call him teach.”

Sandra Shaw said: “I enjoyed reading his articles and reminding us of past greats in the TCI and what needs to be done to progress the

sport in the TCI. RIP Mr Gardiner.”

Cynclair Musgrove said: “He exposed many of our local talent to the international sports arena.

“I can recall vividly my schoolmates competing for the first

Living as one people IS THERE such a thing as one people? Has there ever been national unity in any country?

Does nationalism really exist, or is it a mere fad serving the interests of those intent on manipulating people for their own ends?

This idea of living as one people is reflected in the caption of a letter recently published in the Turks and Caicos Weekly News.

In one paragraph, the writer mentions that we have lost something that binds us together as a people.

What is it that binds people together in a sense of national unity? Sometimes kind acts are a factor, or, as the writer says a sense of feeling for our brothers and I may add sisters too.

People come together in moments that touch an entire society. They show unity when they feel injustice has been visited on others.

And previously where everyone seemed to be going about their own affairs, an event of national moment suddenly binds them together.

All of this seems rather occasional and wears off as quickly as it began. There is

A sense of living as one people, or even unity, suggests a highly developed consciousness of belonging to a distinct geographical area with boundaries, a distinct culture and sharing goals based on agreed values.

And becoming collectively concerned when an event impacts the national psyche to the extent of wanting to do something about it.

This requires having trust in the system. Trust is confidence that things will happen as promised.

It is the strong belief based on past evidence that the system will deliver as it says it would.

Trust is also hope that something would turn out as expected. It is based on previous behaviours.

When a system shows through its actions that it can be trusted, there is national unity in support of it. Trust

then is a factor in our living as one people.

Respect is also critical to unity. It is recognising something positive has been done and expressing sentiments about it.

It is also connected to a certain behaviour causing us to admire others. We respect people when they take a moral position on an issue, show courage, or when they are true to their word.

When this happens, the entire system is respected and this translates into unity and oneness.

Living in a just society also strengthens national unity. When justice is objective and fair, and is not used as a club or instrument of fear but gives each person their due, people form a national bond because they support the institutions of society knowing from experience that society’s institutions work for them.

Dear Editor, Today marks the 30th anniversary of our arrival in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It’s been an interesting and exciting time, and I feel fortunate to have been here when life was very simple and to be a part of the development of the Islands.

Over the course of these 30 years I have worked for Belongers, and expats, and for myself. I have promoted the country, professionally, for more than 20 years, and privately.

We have supported your charities. We have bought property, and built two small houses, employing Belonger construction companies.

We have never been arrested, never been involved in a car accident and we pay our NIS and NHIP religiously.

Our pets are licensed and restrained in public. I volunteer for three different not-for profits.

We formed a small company and we applied for and pay for business licences, work permits and name registration fees.

We have paid probably more than $100,000 in customs duties over the years.

When we were finally granted our PRC (a six year process), it cost $30,000. Now, finally, we are naturalised citizens, with TI passports.

But we cannot vote. My question is simple. Why not?

Fire destroys recycling plant A RECYCLING plant in Blue Hills, Providenciales, was destroyed in a blaze on Monday, February 2.

Recyclables and equipment in the TCI Waste Disposal Services building were ravaged by the flames – but luckily rubbish trucks and IT equipment were all saved.

Company director Ramez Hakoura thanked his team for their hard work following the fire which enabled waste collection to continue as usual the next morning.

However, he told media that the recycling side of the business will be out of action for six to eight months.

“It’s really sad because we worked hard to do recycling in this country

and keep it green.

“But it’s not going to keep us down, if anything we’re going to rebuild a better facility” The fire began after sundown and firefighters from Providenciales Fire Service were soon on the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Fire chief Carlton Jennings explained that a lack of fire hydrants at the property meant that the ordeal took longer than it should have.

The small fire trucks soon ran out of water and trucks from the TCI Airport Authority had to be called for assistance.

About 25,000 gallons of water

was used to put out the fire over several hours.

Jennings said: “There was a lot of paper, stacks and stacks of paper, that were compressed so the water couldn’t penetrate as fast as we would like it to.

“So that hindered us.”

Hakoura explained that the building contained cardboard, plastic, cans, glass and some recycling equipment such as bailers and sort lines, along with tyres.

TCI Waste Disposal Services collects and disposes of rubbish and recyclables from domestic and commercial properties in Providenciales.

Woman struck during beach robbery A 45-year-old US woman was struck about the head with a crowbar during a robbery at North West Point in Providenciales on Wednesday (February 11).

According to police press officer Audley Astwood, she was alone at the beach at about 5pm when the incident happened.

A man approached the tourist, demanded her valuables and hit her about the head.

He made away into the bush with her handbag containing her credit cards, cash and cell phone.

The woman was later treated at Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for

non-life threatening injuries.

Police vehicles were dispatched to the area but the man was not found.

No description of the man has yet been released.

of contracting measles if they have not received the second dose of the MMR vaccine and they come into contact with someone who has the disease.”

In order to reduce the risk of local transmission of measles to TCI residents, public health staff from the Primary Health Care Department will be conducting several initiatives.

Vaccination will take place in schools throughout Providenciales commencing the first week in February 2015.

Catch-up and Mop-up campaigns will be run in the community with the target group being children aged one and two.

Routine immunisation of the measles vaccine will continue to be

administered at well-baby clinics throughout the country.

Vaccinations will be administered at public health clinics free of charge.

Parents are encouraged to cooperate with the public health nurses and send their children’s immunisation take home cards to their school upon request.

Travellers to the USA or Mexico from the TCI (adults and children) are advised to ensure their vaccination records are up to date prior to travelling.

REAL TALK

We need to live as neighbours again – Part one THE REASON why I love this country so much is not because of what we are now, but what we used to be.

I remember as a child growing up in the late 80s in North Caicos, neighbours lived like family.

Growing up in Windsor West, Bottle Creek, even though there were families who had a little more than others, no one could tell because we shared everything.

When one mother got the opportunity to go to the United States and shop for their household, they would carry a list and shop for the mothers who could not afford to make the trip.

When they returned, all the neighbourhood children felt equal because we all had something new.

As neighbours, my friends and I ate three to four dinners a day because whichever yard we were playing in when dinner was ready, we ate whatever the yard cooked.

If someone was sick all the neighbours came by and spent the entire night every day until the neighbour recovered or died.

I remember days when my mom was unsure of the next meal and her neighbour Mrs Jane Williams (who had a little grocery store) would ask her: “Linda do you have meat to cook?”

Mama would say: “Jane I don’t have any money,” and Mrs Jane would tell her: “It doesn’t matter, you and Jas have to eat so send him by my shop for something to cook.”

I remember my neighbour Mrs Henrietta Delancy calling me by the fence that divided our properties and offering me any new product or new snack she was giving to her children just so I would not feel left out.

Then when her husband would take the family to Pine Cay for a day trip, I was always invited and shared a family day with my neighbours.

I can recall the neighbourhood

celebrating when a child succeeded and mourning when they failed.

The first time I watched cable television was at my neighbour’s house. The first time I played a Nintendo game was at my neighbour’s house.

The first time I played with the toy ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ was at my neighbour’s house.

The first time I used the internet was at my neighbour’s house.

When I was out of line, my neighbours straighten me out and did not have to explain anything to my mother.

I am the man I am today because of my neighbours. We need to live like neighbours again.

All about trust

THE TURKS and Caicos Islands has important ‘trust’ organisations.

The National Trust and the National Insurance Board, (NIB), a public retirement trust.

The National Trust has the responsibility for the preservation of our natural resources and historic sites.

It requires funding, but for reasons yet to be explained this funding has not been forthcoming.

Perhaps it is because the National Trust has attempted to preserve the sites while certain politicians planned to sell anything and everything they could to support their lavish lifestyles.

In fact governments of the last dozen years set up other entities that rightfully belong under the National Trust.

The National Parks and the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) now renamed the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA).

The weakness of these organisations has resulted in private organisations emerging.

One example, The Reef Fund.

The interim government struggled with land sold for home sites in a national park.

The NIB, a retirement trust, was set up in the early 1990s. It was financed by the first income tax.

It worked as a retirement fund because of foreign workers paying their income tax and never collecting benefits.

The USA Social Security and the National Insurance Board are going bankrupt. The reason is that employment and contributions are

heading downward in relation to in benefits and raiding of the funds.

The NIB funding was used by our Minister of Finance to fund his illfated private bank. The entire $23.5 million of NIB money wasted.

The Education Ministers of the last 12 years did not build schools while enrolment increased.

Instead they encouraged private schools to enrol students promising Government tuitions.

The private schools paid the teachers and the income tax due to NIB. However one private school withdrew the NIB tax from the teachers’ wages and never paid it.

The education minister’s husband, the undeclared ‘Minister of Propaganda,’ did not pay his National Trust contributions either.

Both have been to court trying to explain hundreds of thousands they owe NIB.

When the bank failed, PNP associated attorneys and TCI Financial Services Commission chairman somehow were trusted to hustle the banks liquidation off to the Bahamas.

Four thousand depositors and untold investors were left with nothing.

The NIB/PNP leader who violated the public’s trust by transferring the millions into the high risk private bank has now been reinstated into the NIB on the recommendation of

our Financial Minister.

Beyond these violations of trust with the people’s money, why is electrical power twice as expensive as the Cayman Islands?

Why is healthcare costing the country over $1.2 billion in years to come? The $1/3 of a billion already spent has resulted in too many deaths.

Who will the voters trust next?

‘I will make a difference’ – James Smith sworn in as new Police Commissioner CROWDS of onlookers were treated to an impressive display of discipline, pageantry and skill from the police force during the handover ceremony for the new Commissioner of Police on Wednesday (February 18).

Former Commissioner of Police Colin Farquhar, who held the post for four years, passed the baton to the Scottish policing veteran James Smith in a formal event at the Parade Grounds in Grand Turk.

Smith promised that he will make a difference, build trust with people and enhance the skills of the officers in order to keep the TCI safe.

The change over ceremony began at 3.30pm with the formal arrival of officers taking part in the parade.

The platoon officers, senior officers and parade commander fell into the parade accompanied by music from the Royal Turks and Caicos Police Force Band.

James Smith and his wife arrived in a police car that drove around the parade grounds before stopping in front of the seated attendees.

Acting assistant Commissioner of Police Wayne Jones greeted the couple and escorted them to their seats.

Next to arrive in a similar fashion were Commissioner of Police Colin Farquhar and his wife, Premier Rufus Ewing and Governor Peter Beckingham.

During the arrivals the national anthem and the TCI national song were both played by the police band.

Farquhar, Deputy Commissioner Rodney Adams and Jones then joined the parade commander in inspecting the parade.

The platoons went on to form three ranks and marched past Commissioner Farquhar and around the parade grounds in slow then

quick time.

On returning to their positions they removed their headdress and gave three cheers to the outgoing head of the police force.

Several attendees then offered remarks to both the outgoing and incoming Commissioners of Police.

WELCOME WORDS Leader of the Opposition Sharlene Cartwright Robinson said she looked forward to a productive and positive next few years.

She bid God speed to the former commissioner and welcomed Smith to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“You will find in many ways that we are different from what you have experienced before and we encourage you to enjoy our uniqueness and the benefits that flows as a consequence.

“We are grateful that amidst the challenges you have come to these Islands and though you will find very quickly that there is much to do, we would like for you to take the time to get to know your men and women in the organisation that you will lead – it is a small staff and quite achievable over a short period.”

She stressed the importance of building a strong relationship with the officers and the people of the TCI. “The people in your organisation and in our communities are key to a successful tenure and we encourage you to become a champion for and on behalf of both.”

She said he must champion better working conditions, fair opportunities for training, resources, facilities, promotion and pay.

“You will in short order, head the oldest force in the region. Much must be done. It is so important that you lead and do so by example and with integrity.”

Premier Rufus Ewing told the outgoing commissioner that he came to the TCI when there were many challenges.

“We know that you meant well, you may not have achieved everything you hoped to achieve but others have come to take the helm and complete the job.”

He thanked the Canadian government for the service they gave to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Ewing said to Smith that he appears to be a man who is ready to work, who is committed and who already recognises the challenges.

“My advice to you is to look to the officers in the force, look at their needs, look at their issues, help work with the Government to address their issues, and have a better working relationship with the Government.”

Governor Peter Beckingham,

who is head of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, thanked Farquhar for his “exemplary and distinguished work” to a round of applause.

He said that under his leadership the country has managed to retain a reputation as a safe destination for tourists.

“A destination where they can come and feel comfortable, relaxed and able to walk along the beach.”

Beckingham also praised him for his work on illegal immigration and wished him God speed.

A plaque was handed over to the outgoing Commissioner of Police and a gift given to his wife.

Following presentations of long service medals to several officers Farquhar gave a few remarks.

He said that he was proud and privileged to stand before the police

“During this time our force has faced and overcome many challenges. He listed positive achievements that with the help of the force had taken place during his tenure.

They included the formation of a new crime and intelligence bureau, the new post of chief firearms officer, progress by sexual offences and domestic violence unit and the reintroduction of the cold case unit.

“I look forward to enhancing the skills of the officers that are here. I know that they have some very good skills already but there’s always work can be done.

“I do have a passion for community policing and I believe that successful policing comes from communities.

“It comes from an intimate knowledge of the people that we serve and it’s the only way we can keep these islands safe.”

Caviar lime LATELY I tried something called caviar lime, also named finger lime.

It doesn’t look like a citrus fruit and it is very different from other citrus, somewhat resembling a gherkin, elongated in shape, and up to three inches in length.

Its skin is thin and can range from purplish or greenish black, the most typical colour, to light green or rusty red.

When the fruit is cut in half, the juice vesicles, which are under pressure, ooze out as if erupting from a mini-volcano.

Unlike the tender, tear-dropshaped juice sacs in standard citrus, the translucent, greenish-white or pinkish vesicles in finger limes

are round and firm, and pop on the tongue like caviar, releasing a flavour that combines lemon and lime with green and herbaceous notes.

The rind oil is also quite aromatic, and contains isomenthone, which is common in mint but rare in citrus.

The finger lime is Microcitrus australasica, one of six species of citrus native to Australia, in this case to the eastern coastal rain forests.

It differs significantly from conventional citrus in several ways, including having very small leaves and flowers, which in 1915 prompted the great citrus scientist Walter T Swingle to assign the finger lime and its kin to a separate genus, Microcitrus.

Like other acid citrus, they’e really too tart to eat fresh, but even so, the first time you encounter one try cutting it in half and sucking out the caviar, squeezing it out of the rind like toothpaste from the tube, just to experience the fruit to the fullest.

Next try some on a slice of Fuyu persimmon, to balance that fruit’s unidimensional sweetness with a pleasing smack of sourness.

A little goes nicely with fish, but not too much, because the assertive flavour can easily overpower delicate seafood.

Some Japanese chef applies a

vinaigrette containing what it calls lime caviar to their sushi - when the juice vesicles pop in your mouth, there’s an explosion of flavour.

Also, this ‘caviar’ is the hottest new thing in French cuisine. Chefs, or more particularly the buyers who supply them, are competing furiously to obtain a supply and it’s also an expensive fruit.

According to the Swingle system it is not part of the genus Citrus, but in a related genus Microcitrus.

However genetic analyses are inconclusive, scientists have not universally accepted this move and

current evidence does not support this.

In the last two decades, as part of a wider interest in native ‘bush tucker,’ Australian growers have cultivated finger limes on a modest scale, and fruit breeders have made selections and crosses to come up with improved varieties, in a rainbow of colours from green, red, pink and yellow.

Unfortunately I don’t know where you can get this new citrus, but if you ever get the chance to find the fruit, save the seeds.

I can’t wait to taste an Australian margarita made of this caviar.

POLICE SAFETY TIPS

Preventing theft of personal electronics LAPTOP computers, tablets, cellular phones, and other personal electronics have become a target of choice for thieves.

Why? Because they are small, valuable, can be removed quickly, are easily hidden, and there is a market for them.

A thief can sell a stolen laptop, MP3 player or other device to an unsuspecting persons or a pawnshop, and easily receive up to half its value in cash.

The cost of a stolen tablet, laptop, or other small electronic device is not just its replacement cost, but also the cost of peripherals and accessories, the installed software, the cost of configuring and loading replacement software, and the cost of lost time for the owner while the device is being replaced.

An even greater cost (especially if your employer issued your device) is the potential exposure and liability that results from lost confidential corporate and client information.

Many times, often after the fact, we think about what we could have done to prevent valuables from being stolen.

Here are a few tips to help you protect your personal electronics and laptop computer, whether you’re at home, school or on the road.

Don’t leave your devices in an unlocked vehicle, even if the vehicle is in your driveway or garage, and NEVER leave it in plain sight, even if the vehicle is locked - that’s just inviting trouble.

If you must leave your devices in a vehicle, the best place is in the trunk. If

you don’t have a trunk, try to conceal them or fit them under a seat and lock the doors.

Carry your devices in a nondescript carrying case or bag when moving about. Placing these items in a case designed for computers is an immediate alert to thieves that you have these valuable devices.

Don’t leave a meeting or conference room without your laptop or personal electronics. Take them with you.

Lock your device in a safe place when not in use or use a cable lock that wraps around a desk or chair leg.

You can also apply distinctive paint markings (such as indelible markers) to make your laptop unique and easily identifiable.

Consider purchasing a theft alarm

system specially made for laptops and other electronics.

Be aware that if your computer is stolen, automatic log-ins can make it easy for a thief to send inappropriate messages with your account.

Use password protection and require a person to log in every time the computer goes to sleep or powers down.

It is also wise to back up your information using cloud-based storage or on portable media such as a flash drive, or other backup media. Store the discs someplace safe.

It also helps to avoid the spread of germs by not double dipping or allowing any dirty tools to come into contact with your makeup or sharing makeup with other persons as this can contaminate the product(s) and spread bacteria.

Makeup brushes These can be washed and sanitised once or twice weekly or even fortnightly depending on how often you use them.

Cleaning and caring for your makeup brushes will lengthen their life and you won’t have to replace them as often.

To clean heavily soiled brushes, you can simply wash them with a mixture of one part olive oil and one part dishwashing liquid.

It is important to note that when wetting the bristles of the brush, you should keep the bristles angled downwards; never soak or submerge the brush into water as it can cause the glue to gradually separate and the bristles to fall out over time thereby prematurely ending the life of your precious brush.

You can use a shallow plate to hold the olive oil/soap mixture and then apply it evenly through the bristles of your brushes and watch as it begins to dissolve any makeup.

Rinse off the bristles under cool running water while making sure that they are still angled downwards so the water just runs off.

When the water runs clear, gently squeeze out any excess liquid and lay the brush flat on a towel to air dry for at least six to eight hours.

To clean brushes with mild buildup, wash with either a bit of baby shampoo, dishwashing liquid or unscented pure white soap such as Ivory or Dial.

After cleansing and rinsing, squeeze excess liquid and lay flat on a towel to air dry for at least six to eight hours.

Once the brushes are dry, you can mist a paper towel with a bit of isopropyl alcohol then wipe down the brush handles to clean and disinfect them.

Sponges These are a breeding ground for bacteria and are meant to be used and tossed. Because they are disposable, it helps to stock up on a few for applying your foundation.

Powder puff These should be washed weekly with soap and warm water; try to replace them often.

Tools Tweezers, eyelash curlers, sharpeners and lash combs can be cleaned by spraying with isopropyl alcohol and wiping all residues off with a clean cloth.

Once they are clean, mist them again with the alcohol and allow them to air dry.

A RECENT study conducted by University College London found that the memory and walking speeds of adults who have lost all of their teeth decline more rapidly than in those who still have some of their own teeth.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, looked at 3,166 adults aged 60 or over and compared their performance in tests of memory and walking speed.

The results showed that the people with none of their own teeth performed approximately 10 percent worse in both memory and walking speed tests than the people with teeth.

The association between total tooth loss and memory was explained after the results were fully adjusted for a wide range of factors, including socio-demographic characteristics, existing health problems, physical health and health behaviours, such as smoking and drinking.

However, after adjusting for all possible factors, people without teeth still walked slightly slower than those with teeth.

These links between older adults in England losing all natural teeth and having poorer memory and worse physical function 10 years later were particularly evident in adults aged 60 to 74 .

“Tooth loss could be used as an early marker of mental and physical

decline in older age, particularly among 60 to 74-year-olds,” says lead author Dr Georgios Tsakos (UCL Epidemiology and Public Health).

“We find that common causes of tooth loss and mental and physical decline are often linked to socioeconomic status, highlighting the importance of broader social determinants such as education and wealth to improve the oral and general health of the poorest members of society.

“Regardless of what is behind the link between tooth loss and decline in function, recognising excessive tooth loss presents an opportunity for early identification of adults at higher risk of faster mental and physical decline later in their life.”

I think this is very relevant to our community here where I see some very poor dentition in some sectors of our community.

Education of basic dental healthcare is an essential element in improving this: by taking the time to teach your children the importance of looking after their teeth, you will be setting them on a course for better long-term future health.

For adults, the loss of any tooth is not a decision to be taken lightly and every effort should be made to preserve teeth where possible.

I often see an attitude of ‘Just extract it. Don’t fill it.’ This research is proving that the long-term consequences are much greater than the loss of just one tooth.

• 1 ½ tablespoons British beef gravy powder, such as Bisto • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1oz cheddar cheese, grated METHOD • Boil the potatoes in a large pan until soft. Drain and mash them with the butter and milk, then set aside.

• Meanwhile, brown the ground beef or turkey over a medium heat in a large saucepan.

• Add the garlic, onion, mushrooms and carrots, and sauté together with the meat until they begin to soften.

Travel agent donates supplies to primary school

BY DAISY HANDFIELD TRAVEL agents from Jet Set Getaways donated school supplies to Ianthe Pratt Primary School in Providenciales recently.

The donation was made on Friday, January 30, at the school grounds and was presented to

principal Neekimo King.

TCI charitable organisation Grace Bay Resorts Foundation aided the hand over to its adopted school.

Foundation head Carlton Mills said that this is the second consecutive year that members of the travel agency have donated to the school.

Cinema to open soon MANAGING Director of the Digicel TCI Cinema, Derek Handfield, told the Weekly News on Thursday, February 5, that it will be opening soon.

The theatre has been closed from September 1, 2014, and was due to reopen just a few months later.

Handfield said that the cinema team are currently

working on an upgrade to a digital projector system.

He did not give an exact date as to when it would be back in operation, but said that it will happen before summer of this year.

Mills said that prior to the donation, the school was contacted to find out what supplies they specifically needed.

The donation included paper clips, scotch tape, pencils, rulers, glue, folders, exercise books and first aid kits.

He said: “The staff were overwhelmed, as you are aware the schools are underfunded now and this has sort of bridged that gap.”

Mills added that this is the largest donation in terms of school supplies that the foundation has had so far.

“This is what we are encouraging guests to do when they are coming, to pack school supplies.”

Mills said that the foundation has recently made donations to the Charles Hubert James Primary School in Kew and the Adelaide Oemler Primary School in Bottle Creek.

20 from four different schools learn about the TCI’s history

Museum’s office to be used as educational resource

ABOUT 20 students from four different primary schools in Providenciales participated in a workshop at the Museum’s Developmental Office in Providenciales on Wednesday (February 11).

Among schools involved were Holy Family Academy, Ianthe Pratt Primary School, Precious Treasures Primary School and Richmond Hills Prep School.

During that two hour period they learnt about the timeline and history of the TCI, the Trouvadore wreck and what plans the museum officials were looking to bring forward in the future.

According to the museum representative in Providenciales Candianne Williams the purpose of the workshop was to try to provide the classes with an outdoor education resource for teachers and the students.

President of the TCI National Museum Dr Donald Keith spoke to the batch of grade six students and answered questions from the children and their teachers.

Keith is a marine archaeologist with more than 40 years of experience working on shipwrecks and land sites in many Caribbean countries, the Mediterranean, Korea, and China.

In 1980 Keith directed the excavation of the Molasses

Reef Wreck, the oldest shipwreck ever found in the Western Hemisphere, and the subsequent conservation and analysis of its artefacts.

The return of those artefacts triggered the formation of the Turks and Caicos National Museum in 1991.

He continued to direct archaeological projects and surveys in the TCI including the search for the slave ship Trouvadore, wrecked on East Caicos In 1841, the discovery of the warship USS Chippewa, and the excavation of Fort Saint George.

He said that he continues to be enthralled by the historical and archaeological resources that exist here in the Islands.

Ladies luncheon raises $16,600 for Gov’t high school

BY DAISY HANDFIELD CLEMENT Howell High School received a cheque for $16,600 from the Ladies Hat Luncheon Committee on Thursday (February 12) to assist the school with purchasing supplies.

A press conference was held at the Fire and Ice Restaurant in the Blue Haven Resort, Providenciales, to hand over the cheque and to acknowledge the ladies affiliated with the kind gesture Minister of Education Akierra Missick, who was present for the donation, confirmed that the funds donated would go towards the purchase of white boards in the classrooms, which she also saw as a ‘worthwhile’ initiative.

Missick took the opportunity to thank the ladies involved in the annual luncheon.

Olivia Grant, fifth form student at the Clement Howell said that she was thankful and looked forward to the raising of more funds to go towards education.

“We are very thankful and I think that this will benefit us a lot and I

Mausoleum built for Rosita Butterfield A MEMORIAL structure, the first of its kind in the TCI, was erected to house the body of former speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr Rosita Butterfield, before her funeral last week.

The mausoleum at Faith Tabernacle Church on Leeward Highway will be a permanent

reminder of the great work that the much loved woman did for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It will enable family and friends to lay flowers and pay their respects, and will be seen every day by hundreds of passing cars.

The building, which also has

a space for Butterfield’s husband Albray Senior Butterfield, took just a few weeks to build.

It was ready in time for her body was placed inside it on Thursday, February 5, after her state funeral at the Downtown ballpark.

Family members and dignitaries

placed red roses on top of her coffin as a sign of respect and devotion.

Rosita Butterfield was a teacher, a nurse, a long standing member of parliament, a businesswoman, a preacher and a philanthropist.

She lived a long and fruitful life that touched many people and raised

a large and successful family.

The great grandmother and community stalwart passed away at the Doctor’s Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas, on January 10.

Her body was transported back to the Turks and Caicos Islands where she was laid to rest.

Bermuda responds to Ed Miliband plan on tax avoidance BERMUDA has said it is “surprised and disappointed” to be included on a list of places Ed Miliband says Labour would target in a tax avoidance clampdown.

Mr Miliband wants British territories such as Bermuda to be internationally blacklisted if they do not compile public registers of offshore firms.

Bermuda’s government said it had operated a central registry of companies since the 1940s.

Gibraltar says Labour was being “unfair” as it was subject to EU rules.

Mr Miliband has sent a letter to the leaders of the British Overseas Territories of Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Gibraltar and Montserrat. He also contacted the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. He said that - under a Labour government - they would have six months to compile a register or face being put on an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development list of “tax havens” list, incurring sanctions.

Bermuda premier Michael Dunkley said it remained open to dialogue with the UK.

Bermuda's Premier Michael Dunkley said the territory was important to the UK's economy.

A statement from Bermuda’s government said it had noted Mr Miliband’s comments, but insisted it was an international leader in the registration of companies.

Mr Dunkley said: “The government of Bermuda remains open to continuing dialogue with the UK government, the UK opposition, and all other interested parties, in sharing best practice across borders in areas of corporate transparency, and the fight against fraud and crime.

“We would also remind Mr Miliband of Bermuda’s strategic

economic contribution to the UK, which includes direct and indirect employment in the UK of 100,000 people, as well as our role as a global hub for the reinsurance and insurance industries, providing the critical underwriting required for damage arising from natural disasters and terrorist events.”

Speaking on Sky News’s Murnaghan programme, Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo, said: “The standards that apply in respect of financial services and their provision from Gibraltar are exactly the same standards that apply in respect of London, in respect of Frankfurt and the rest of the EU. “Therefore it is quite unfair to characterise Gibraltar as a tax haven.”

The leader of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party added that ministers were adopting an antimoney laundering directive in September and it was “very unlikely” Gibraltar would find itself on the kind of list proposed by Labour.

Labour argues overseas territories and crown dependencies could help to stop or stem tax avoidance by showing tax authorities who is diverting money into companies there.

Barbados opposition wants probe over CLICO accounts THE Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has called on Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Charles Leacock to investigate a number of bank accounts into which funds from troubled insurer CLICO were reportedly channelled.

During a meeting of the BLP’s St Philip West constituency branch

at Princess Margaret Secondary School last night, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley identified at least three bank accounts which she said Griffith and Leacock should probe.

She told the meeting that the police and the DPP should try to determine whether some criminal act had been perpetuated on CLICO’s policyholders.

ANTI-GOVERNMENT street protesters shut down Haiti’s capital on Monday as the country plunged deeper into political and economic crises even as many prepared for the annual Carnival, normally a time of peaceful revelry.

The usually congested streets of the capital were largely deserted after opposition parties and a minibus drivers’ union called a two-day general strike to protest high fuel prices.

Protest organizers warned residents to stay off the streets, saying those who ventured out would risk their lives.

Only minor incidents were reported. Police said they arrested 20 people and used tear gas to disperse a small group of university students.

In downtown Port-au-Prince young men played soccer on some streets, while barricades were erected in several suburbs to try to block motorcycle taxi drivers who did not observe the strike action.

One policeman was wounded by a stabbing in the Cité Soleil slum while trying to remove burning tires placed by strikers.

Prime Minister Evans Paul called on state workers to show up for work but few did and most government offices in the capital were closed.

The impoverished Caribbean nation is in the midst of a political crisis after the previous prime minister was forced to resign in December and parliament was dissolved over the failure to hold municipal and legislative elections.

For three months, President Michel Martelly has faced radical government opponents calling for his removal, with students joining the protests last week.

Haiti’s government badly needs to raise cash from the sale of gasoline

to pay off its mounting fuel debt with Venezuela’s preferential PetroCaribe program, which has ballooned to about $1.5 billion.

The government “cannot lower the price of gas. It’s not that we do not want to, it’s because we are not able to,” Paul said in a statement.

“We are poor, we cannot live anymore,” said Loédon Gaspard, who drives a colorful pickup-turnedminibus, known locally as “tap-tap,” the Caribbean nation’s main form of public transport.

THE United States regulatory agency, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has sued the Cayman Islands-based Caledonian Bank and four other companies, claiming that they took more than US$75 million from unregistered sales of “virtually worthless” penny stocks.

The SEC sued Caledonian Bank, Caledonian Securities, Clear Water Securities, Legacy Global Markets, and Verdmont Capital, in US federal district court in Manhattan.

The Caledonian defendants are based in the Cayman Islands.

Clearwater and Legacy are based in Belize, and Verdmont in Panama.

All of the allegations were the same, the SEC said in its 39-page complaint.

First, they filed “bogus registration statements” with the SEC, purporting to register securities to public shareholders, though there were no such sales and the securities stayed in the control of the issuers and their affiliates.

“In the sham offerings, the issuers pretended to sell securities

to shareholders in such places as Serbia, Mexico, Ireland, Norway, Panama and Jamaica,” said the SEC in the court filing.

It alleged that the restricted securities were then “passed off” as free-trading stocks in the United States and sold to the public.

The agency claims the defendants operated as affiliates, dealers, sales outlets and underwriters, in connection with four shell companies: Swingplane Ventures, Goff Corp., Nostra Energy and Xuamnii Inc. “These violations occurred simultaneously with aggressive and extensive promotion campaigns for the penny stocks of those shell companies,” the SEC said.

The defendants’ unregistered sales of securities generated more than $75 million in proceeds on penny stocks that were virtually worthless and whose prices fell to their former token levels within months of the defendants’ sales.”.

Former Jamaican PM had ‘no knowledge’ of mortars use FORMER prime minister Bruce Golding on Monday said he had no prior knowledge that mortars would be used by the security forces as the Commission of Inquiry probing the events of May 2010 in West Kingston that left several people dead resumed after a break of almost two months.

The security forces had gone into the area in a bid to arrest Christopher “Dudus” Coke who was facing extradition to the United States.

At least 76 people, including 73 civilians were killed during the operations as the security forces battled gunmen loyal to Coke, the reputed leader of the notorious Shower Posse gang.

Golding, who was prime minister at the time of the incursion, told the Commission chaired by the prominent Barbadian jurist, Sir David Simmons, that he had received numerous reports from residents that mortars or bombs were being used in the operations.

The former prime minister said he had raised the issue with the then Chief of Defence Staff Major General Stewart Saunders, who

informed him that “these were not incendiary devices.

“That they have more bark than bite,” he reported Saunders as saying, adding that the army official had also indicated that the motors were being used as a distraction.

“My understanding was that it was more a shock and awe effect that the military was seeking to get,” Golding said telling the Commission that his lack of prior knowledge of the use of mortars by the military was not within the remit of the Defence Board, which he chaired at the time.

“The Defence Act places the operational functions of the Force squarely on the Chief of Defence Staff”, Golding told the threemember Commission.

Golding told the Commission on Monday that he had emphasised the importance of avoiding at all cost any injuries to law abiding citizens, especially women and children during the operation.

Golding said that at the start of the operation residents called in to complain about the activities of the security forces.

He said as a result, Witter wanted to immediately investigate possible human rights breaches, the Red Cross head offered to provide motor vehicles to take the injured to

hospital and to provide medication, while Blair agreed to mobilise food for the people still in Tivoli Gardens.

During his testimony, Golding acknowledged knowing Coke, and that they spoke on a number of occasions prior to the issuing of an extradition request.

He said he had last spoken to Coke in December 2007. He said he had stopped talking to Coke because the security forces had informed him that men from the Stone Crusher gang were seeking refuge in Tivoli Gardens.

“I cut off all communication with him (Coke) and stopped supporting his community programmes,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Public Defender has said it now has a copy of the video footage taken by a United States aircraft during the May 2010 Tivoli Gardens operation.

The Commission will sit for two weeks and the secretary, Maria Jones, said “the Commission is proceeding to call witnesses in a chronological order relating to how the events of May 2010 unfolded in West Kingston, starting with the former prime minister, going back to the residents”.

Former national security minister Dwight Nelson, will also testify before the Commission.

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) which missed two previous deadlines last month, has now submitted a significant number of statements to the Commission.

BAHAMAS’ Education Director Lionel Sands on Tuesday said that no child will be denied access to an education in the fall semester, despite a new immigration policy requiring non-Bahamians to have a student permit and a passport with a residency stamp.

Mr Sands told The Tribune that the Department of Education is willing to “work with” individuals on a “case by case” basis to ensure that every child is allowed to attend school in September.

He said his department will release the registration requirements for new students entering the public system today, as school registration begins next month for the fall semester.

While he could not say how many students overall will be affected by the new requirement, he revealed that education officials expect at least 6,000 grade one students to be affected.

“We have been meeting with immigration officials all week to determine how this new system will work and what we are required to do,” he said.

Education Director Lionel Sands said that the Department of Education is willing to “work with” individuals on a “case by case” basis to ensure that every child is allowed to attend school in September.

“We have to ensure that our work is consistent with the regulations and because registrations starts next month we are looking to release those new requirements on Wednesday. I cannot say how many non-Bahamians will be registering but we expect about 6,000 first graders to be impacted by the new system.

“We are still trying to figure out how it will all work because the permit is issued by the Department

of Immigration and not us. But the new rules for registration for public schools will be out by tomorrow afternoon. These will apply to students entering school for the first time as well as students who are moving from primary school to junior high and junior high to senior high,” he said.

Mr Sands also hit out at critics of the policy, who have said nonBahamians will not be able to afford the $125 inclusive cost for the student permit and processing fees.

He said: “History has shown that non-Bahamians comply much faster when it comes to finances, so I do not think that will be an issue at all.

But we will make provisions in any event for those who cannot afford it to make sure that no student will be denied access to education.”

Last month, Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell announced that beginning this Fall, every foreign person enrolled in school, even children born in The Bahamas to non-Bahamian parents, will be required to have a student permit and a passport with a residency stamp.

The fifth annual event, held at the Regent Palms in Providenciales on Saturday (February 7) is one of the charity’s biggest fundraisers and this year raised more than $30,000.

Proceeds are to benefit community initiatives including the schools hot lunch programme, which provides daily lunches for a number of children at Clement Howell High School as well as in other schools.

The total was the most ever raised and the organising committee was thrilled with the ever-growing success of the event.

This year 13 restaurants entered the event, all donating their time and resources to the good cause.

Restaurants included Amanyara, Fire and Ice (Blue Haven), Fresh Bakery, Infinity (Grace Bay Club), Kitchen 218 (Bach House), Melt, Pavilion (Somerset), Parrot Cay, Pelican Bay, Regent Palms, Somewhere Café, Stelle (Gansevoort ) and West Bay Club.

The creative chefs wowed guests with their innovative entries, some of which looked almost too good to eat.

Throughout the evening attendees enjoyed tastings of all of the scrumptious chocolaty entries and vote for their favourites.

Stelle stole the silvers for their spiced margarita truffles entry in the savoury division as well as for their banana flambe s’more – their sweet entry.

Of the nine savoury entries Pavilion’s braised beef ravioli was voted the best while Pelican Bay’s chocolate chili wanton took the top spot for best sweet entry out of the 13 restaurants that entered.

Entertainment Ex ‘Young and the Restless’ star Victoria Rowell sues soap opera for racism SHE’S not young, and they’re all racist.

A former star of the “Young and Restless” soap opera sued the producers of the show Wednesday for not re-hiring her for racist reasons.

Victoria Rowell, who is black and played the character Drucilla Winters, appeared in over 2,000 episodes from 1990 to 2007, documents filed in Manhattan Federal Court charge.

Rowell, 55, claims that black actors were treated as second-class stars on the set, and that she even had to pay for a “capable African American hair stylist.”

“White actors and actresses taunted Ms. Rowell and the stylist with impunity, and told Ms. Rowell that her hair ‘smelled,’” documents read.

Other examples of racism abound, including actress Melody Thomas Scott mockingly wearing an oversized afro wig on set, and actress Michelle Stafford spitting on the plaintiff and calling her a “freak” and screaming “no one here likes you!” according to court papers.

Fifty Shades of Grey ‘better than book’ FIRST reviews of mummy-porn romance Fifty Shades of Grey say the film is better than the book it is based on.

Variety called it “a significant improvement” on EL James’s novel, describing it as “Charlotte Bronte with a peacock feather”.

The Guardian agreed, describing it as a “better-than-it-has-to-be adaptation”.

The story follows an affair between student Anastasia Steele, portrayed by Dakota Johnson, and billionaire Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan.

Receiving mainly three stars from initial reviewers, Variety’s Justin Chang said the film was “edgier than most grown-up studio fare, but otherwise a fairly mild provocation in this porn-saturated day and age”.

The Guardian’s Jordan Hoffman praised Johnson for her role in the film as the clumsy, innocent, virgin Ana. “Reminiscent of only her mother Melanie Griffith’s best characteristics, Johnson’s Ana squeezes believability out of one of the more silly romantic entanglements in recent popular culture,” he said.

NBC news anchor Brian Williams suspended for six months US news anchor Brian Williams has been suspended by his employer, NBC, after he admitted giving a misleading account of coming under fire in Iraq.

The broadcaster said Williams would be suspended for six months without pay for his “inexcusable” actions.

Williams, the most-watched network anchor in the US, often spoke of being shot down in a helicopter in Iraq.

However, after veterans disputed his account, he admitted getting the story wrong and blamed the “fog of memory”.

Last week, he apologised on air for the lapse.

“I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago,” he said. “I want to apologise. I said I was travelling in an aircraft that was hit by RPG [rocket-propelled grenade] fire. I was instead in a following aircraft.”

Grammys 2015: Sam Smith is biggest winner SAM Smith had a huge night at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, picking up four awards, three of them in major categories: best new artist and song of the year and record of the year for his Tom Petty-echoing smash hit “Stay With Me.” But it wasn’t quite a clean sweep.

Beck surprised everyone with an album of the year win for “Morning Phase.” And Kanye West tried to upstage his own infamous award show moment as he “jokingly” hopped on stage when Beck won out over Beyoncé.

Meanwhile, even if Kanye was having a blast, the rest of the show featured a surprising amount of very

serious performances. Everything — from Usher’s tribute to Stevie Wonder to Katy Perry’s song dedicated to a survivor of domestic violence — led to an incredibly somber night.

A NEIGHBOUR reported a violent dispute outside Bobbi Kristina Brown’s Atlanta home just days before the only daughter of late music legend Whitney Houston was found face-down in a bathtub, a 911 recording has revealed.

The emergency call on Jan. 23 was made by a security guard at the upscale gated complex who said a female resident claimed people were fighting outside Brown’s three-bedroom home.

“Just had a neighbour call and report that there were people hitting each other and swinging outside, in the front of their townhome,” the security guard told the dispatcher.

The guard did not give a description of the people involved or say how many were present during the disturbance.

The recording surfaced shortly before the Roswell Police Department confirmed

Wednesday — the third anniversary of Whitney Houston’s death — that investigators are conducting a criminal probe of the circumstances surrounding the 911 call a week later reporting Brown unresponsive in the bathtub.

England bans smoking in cars with children DRIVERS in England will be banned from smoking in their cars if they are carrying children as passengers.

The move, which will become law on 1 October, follows a similar ban in Wales and aims to protect young people under 18 from second-hand smoke. Scotland is also considering introducing a ban.

Anyone found flouting the law in England could be fined £50.

The British Lung Foundation welcomed the ban as a victory, but smokers’ group Forest said it was unenforceable.

It will not apply to anyone driving alone or driving in a convertible car with the top down.

The regulations were passed in the Commons after 342 MPs voted in favour of legislation while just 74 voted against.

More than 430,000 children are exposed to second-hand smoke in cars each week, according to the British Lung Foundation, Passive smoke in children can increase the risk of asthma, meningitis and cot death, say public health experts.

While many support a ban, some say it is an unnecessary intrusion.

Public Health Minister, Jane Ellison, said: “Three million children are exposed to second hand smoke in cars, putting their health at risk.

THE captain of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia has been found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Captain Francesco Schettino was at the helm when the ship hit rocks and sank in 2012, killing 32 people.

He was accused of taking the liner too close to the shore and then abandoning ship with passengers and crew still on board.

Schettino denied the charges and said he was being made a scapegoat.

His lawyers had argued that it was a collective failure of the ship’s crew and others should share the blame for the disaster.

Schettino was not present when Judge Giovanni Puliatti read out the verdict at the court in the city of Grosseto.

The 54-year-old is expected to appeal against the verdict.

Earlier, the captain had made an emotional final appeal to the judge on the last day of the 19-month trial.

Schettino sobbed as he told the court he had spent the last three years “in a media meat grinder”.

“All the responsibility has been loaded on to me with no respect for the truth or for the memory of the victims,” he said.

Prosecutors had sought a 26-year jail term but the court sentenced Schettino to 10 years for multiple manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck and one year for abandoning his passengers.

Investigators had severely criticised his handling of the disaster, accusing him of bringing the 290m-long vessel too close to shore when it struck rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio.

Christina Reber will spend the next two years behind bars for the brutal assault on her former lover at his Muncie home in August 2012, reports the Indianapolis Star.

The 46-year-old was convicted in August 2014 and sentenced on Monday.

A judge heard how Reber burst into the then 59-year-old’s home and, as he was working on his computer, started punching him in the head.

She then grabbed his scrotum and began “squeezing” as hard as she could.

The pair scuffled — and eventually the man was able to pry her hand away after they fell to the ground.

Cops were called and Reber was detained.

A police report states that the officer “double locked” the handcuffs after placing them on her, reports The Smoking Gun.

Peter Liang has pleaded not guilty to charges including manslaughter and official misconduct.

A US police officer on trial for the fatal shooting of an unarmed man in a block of flats in New York City has pleaded not guilty.

Officer Peter Liang has been charged by a grand jury with offences including manslaughter and official misconduct.

Police said that the shooting in November of 28-year-old Akai Gurley, a black man, was an accident.

The failure of grand juries to indict officers over the deaths of other black men has caused nationwide protests.

Mr Gurley was shot in the chest after opening the door of a dark stairwell in a housing complex in Brooklyn.

Police say Mr Liang, who had been patrolling the flats, had fired without a word and apparently by accident.

Police say the triple murder of Deah Barakat, 23, his 21-year-old wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, Tuesday afternoon was the climax of a long-simmering parking dispute with 46-year-old neighbour Craig Stephen Hicks.

Greece presents bailout plans to EU finance ministers GREECE’S anti-austerity government is presenting its first concrete proposals for an alternative debt plan at an emergency meeting of eurozone finance ministers in Brussels.

The government wants to overhaul 30% of its bailout obligations, replacing them with a 10-point plan of reforms.

But EU ministers have warned that Greece must abide by existing terms.

The EU-IMF bailout for the debt-laden country expires on 28 February and Greece does not want it extended.

Instead the new Athens government is asking for a “bridge agreement” that will enable it to stay afloat until it can agree a new four-year reform plan with its EU creditors.

Thousands of left-wing demonstrators have rallied in Athens in support of their government’s

proposition.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s government won a confidence vote on Tuesday, with the support of 162 deputies in the 300-seat parliament.

The Athens stock exchange then fell by 4% ahead of the emergency Eurogroup meeting, which will see Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis unveil the controversial debt proposals.

The Syriza-led government says the conditions of the €240bn (£182bn; $272bn) bailout - sweeping spending cuts and public sector job losses - have impoverished Greece.

Ex-IMF chief Dominique StraussKahn has told his trial for pimping in France that he is annoyed with persistent questions about his sexual practices.

The one-time presidential hopeful denies helping to procure sex workers for a hotel prostitution ring.

As he gave evidence for a second day, questions continued to focus on sex parties he attended in Paris, Brussels and Washington.

He told the court in Lille he was not on trial for “deviant acts”.

Two former prostitutes who took part in the sex parties have been giving evidence at the trial, both alleging that Mr Strauss-Kahn had been rough in his behaviour.

Although using prostitutes is not illegal in France, supplying them or assisting in supplying them is, and the former head of the International Monetary Fund insists he was unaware that women involved in the parties were prostitutes.

Mr Strauss-Kahn said it was “absurd” to suggest that his preference for “rougher” sexual acts would spur him to seek out prostitutes.

If found guilty, the one-time potential candidate for the French presidency could face up to 10 years in jail and a €1.5m (£1.13m) fine.

Big Bang Theory out, Timeless Universe Theory in?

ALTHOUGH our understanding of the universe has grown exponentially these last several decades, there are still plenty of questions that we still don’t have an answer for, or rather, have an unsatisfactory one.

Unsurprisingly, one of these burning questions is related to the origins of the universe and there are only a handful of theories that even attempt to answer that question.

In science, the most wellknown model is the Big Bang Theory, which states that approximately 13.8 billion years ago everything that exists now was compressed into a very small point that’s often being referred to as the singularity. Sometimes this infinitely dense point is called the Big Bang, but most people use those words to simply describe the event which lead to the expansion of the universe.

Needless to say, the Big Bang Theory is not exactly easy to grasp even if one does understand the basics, as it suggests that a long time ago space didn’t even exist, and neither did time for that matter.

Likewise, this theory raises some difficult questions such as: where did this singularity come from? How did it come into existence? Since the Big Bang essentially created both space and time, the singularity

seems impossible to explain because there was no space for the dense point to exist in, nor was there time for it to be created by some other cosmic event. In other words, it seems like the singularity was just there for some inexplicable reason and this notion causes headaches not only to us common folk, but to the most illustrious of scientists as well.

According to the Big Bang Theory, the universe has been expanding exponentially ever since it was born and will continue to do so until it eventually dies. Interestingly, general relativity suggests that the death of the universe might possibly come as a result of contraction rather than expansion. At some point in the distant future the universe will begin to revert back to its original state and will ultimately reach a singularity again in a process called “the big crunch.” In a way, this theory implies that the universe could be just a series of expansions and contractions that always result in a singularity. If so, there may have been another universe before this one which contracted into the singularity that caused the Big Bang for the current universe.

Cricket World Cup 2015: England not intimidated - Eoin Morgan ENGLAND captain Eoin Morgan says his team will not be intimidated when they meet Australia on the opening day of the World Cup on Saturday.

Egypt suspends football league after Cairo stadium deaths THE Egyptian authorities have suspended football league matches indefinitely after at least 22 fans were killed in clashes with police at a Cairo stadium.

People were crushed in a stampede after police fired tear gas at supporters of Zamalek who were trying to gain entry to a match against city rivals ENPPI. The fans blamed police for forcing them through a narrow, fenced-in passageway.

President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has expressed “great sorrow” over the deaths and promised an investigation.

The Egyptian Premier League was last suspended in February 2012 after 74 fans were killed in a riot at a match in Port Said.

The league resumed the following year, but supporters were banned from attending matches until last December.

Since then, limited numbers have been allowed into stadiums.

State media reported that only 5,000 tickets were made available for sale to the public for Sunday evening’s match between Zamalek and ENPPI at the 30,000-capacity Air Defense Stadium in the east of

But thousands of ticketless Zamalek fans reportedly tried to gain entry anyway.

The interior ministry said they had “attempted to storm the stadium gates by force, which prompted police to prevent them from continuing the assault”, setting off a deadly stampede.

Princess Anne and golfing greats among first women members of R&A BRITAIN’S Princess Anne and 10time major winner Annika Sorenstam are among the first women members to be admitted to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, it was announced Tuesday.

The club, which is renowned as the home of golf, voted last September to end its male-only membership rule, breaking with a 260-year tradition.

Princess Anne, who is also a member of the International OIympic Committee, and Sweden’s Sorenstam, were granted honorary membership status.

The other five to be honored, Britons Laura Davies and Belle Robertson, Americans Renee Powell and Louise Suggs and Lally Segard of France, have played and enjoyed success at the highest levels of competitive golf.

Woods takes a break from golf It is some admission from one of the finest golfers ever to play the game.

Tiger Woods -- a 14-time major champion and former world No. 1 -- is taking a break from the sport after admitting his game isn’t up to scratch.

The 39-year-old shot a career worst round of 82 at his first tournament of 2015 in Phoenix before withdrawing from his second at Torrey Pines due to injury.

And he says he won’t be back until both his body, and his game, are in tip top shape.

“This latest injury is not related to my previous surgery. I am having daily physical therapy and I am

feeling better every day,” Woods said in a statement on his official website.

“Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me. My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf.

“Like I’ve said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I’m ready, I’ll be back. Next week I will practice at Medalist and at home getting ready for the rest of the year.”

After his 2014 was blighted by a series of injuries, Woods’ world ranking now stands at 62 -- the lowest since he turned professional back in 1996.

In memory of Josh for Sports FOR most of his adult life, Joshua Obed Gardiner had fought for the growth and development of sports in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Due to his direct and strong approach in his articles and his steadfast nature he had a large amount of supporters and critics alike—to me he liked it that way.

“You can never please everyone”, he once said. “But you can always do what you feel is right.” For Josh being that critical voice was his calling. He was good at it. Every week he could ruffle a few feathers and cause a stir, but better yet he brought awareness to numerous injustices.

His methods at times might have been tactless, but Josh could care less, his ultimate objective was to promote positive changes. His articles did promote change and TCI owe him much gratitude.

OUTSTANDING ATHLETE For Josh the pen was not always his first love. In fact Josh would go down as one of our better athletes.

His personal best long jump (7.98M) and triple jump (15.6M) are better than any achieved by any TCI representative, unfortunately Josh made these jumps representing the Bahamas.

He also unofficially broke the triple jump world record at age 16 for

his age group (15.1M). This natural athlete could also run most sprints and play most sports including table tennis and volleyball at a superior level.

On April 21st, 1951, Josh (then named Obed Ebenezer Gardiner Jr.) was born in Bottle Creek, North Caicos to Beatrice Gardiner (nee Williams), the eldest child and sister to Daniel Williams Jr. who joined with the PDM and Jags McCartney as an independent to form the first elected government in 1976.

His father was Obed Sr. of Bottle Creek. At the age of four months, Josh migrated to the Bahamas. He spent his pivotal athletic years there.

He also had a stint in Jamaica, when he attended Munro College.

In the summer of 1968 he just missed a spot on the Bahamas’ Olympic team that competed in Mexico City.

At the age of 18 in his first year at Southern Illinois University (SIU) he became Illinois State Champion in the triple jump (the indoor season).

He jumped 15.6M, which was a record.

Josh wrote numerous times about dominating track from his infant years (age four to be precise) to his early 20s. He did this without the total blessings of his parents. He never stated why this was so, but his

love for sports proved greater than their acceptance of it.

CRITICAL MOMENT Josh might have easily become a world champion, but a few years after starting SIU he quit university and placed competitive sports on the back burner out of frustration after the CDC diagnosed him with all the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.

That disease would bother him for the rest of his life.

Josh could not give up his love for sports and soon he turned to coaching full time.

He had created the World Trotters Track Club in the Bahamas for preteen athletes and the Borco Track Club (both prior to being diagnosed).

After he was diagnosed he turned his attention to his most successful track club, the Bain-Town Flyers. That club ended up producing a number of world rated athletes, including Olympic champion Pauline Davis.

In his latter years Josh often asked for his “flowers while he is alive”— for some sort of acknowledgement for his services to sports in the TCI. He was of course the first Director of Sports here and was responsible for starting numerous associations and for promoting TCI sports internationally. He liked the title “father of sports in the TCI”.

As good as Josh was in his field, he was never fully recognised. Many allowed unfortunate decisions he made in his past to paint a dark picture over the man who breathe sport from four years old to the age of 63.

This is unfortunate because Josh’s

accomplishments are unmatched and his shoes, well they might never be filled. Love him or not, Josh played his part in the development of sports in the TCI—and should always be remembered.

RIP Josh

Former NBA star in critical condition after heart attack FORMER NY Knicks player and 13year NBA veteran Anthony Mason is fighting for his life after suffering a heart attack earlier this week.

He has since had several surgeries at a New York hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Mason has a strong connection with Miami Heat’s President Pat Riley which began in the early 90’s when both were a part of the New York Knicks.

In 1994 they took the Knicks to the NBA Finals but lost to the Houston Rockets in an exciting 7-game series.

The following season Mason won the NBA’s Six Man Award and his

tough, rugged play was a perfect fit for Riley’s Knicks.

The two were reunited in Miami in the year 2000, where Mason was selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game for the only time in his career.

Mason is best remembered for his time with the Knicks and still remains close friends with several of his former teammates.

Following his career, Mason was often seen at Knicks games and practices. He was hoping to be offered a full-time job with the Knicks. The team tweeted out this message before their Wednesday

Underdogs dominate latest action THE HAB Supersonics and the Coca Cola Classics pulled off surprising wins over the Steelers and the Five Cays Flyers respectively when action in the Provo Amateur Basketball Association (PABA) Night League continued on Wednesday night at the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex.

The two teams—at the bottom of the table played with more urgency that their opponents.

In the opening clash the Supersonics led by the TCIPS trio of Jose De Las Santos (20 points, 14 rebounds and six steals), Darly Francois (12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals) and Galvin Hall (11 points (most by dunks), three boards and three steals) defeated the strong Steelers.

In the game, which ended 53-44, the Steelers seemed over confident and were caught off guard by their opponents. Kino Williams led the

Steelers with 17 points, six rebounds and four steals.

The win was the second in ten tries for the Supersonics. While the Steelers dropped below .500 with the loss.

In the feature clash the Classics won their first game this season after a tense battle against the now .500 Flyers.

Williams set for 400M at Camperdown Classics

DELANO Williams will run the 400M at the Camperdown Classic this Saturday at the National Stadium in Jamaica.

Williams, who broke Usain Bolt’s seven-year-old meet record when he competed at the Queens/ Grace Jackson Track Meet two Saturdays ago, will attempt another big run. The TCI born athlete, who competes for Great Britain, had run

a personal best to win the 400M in 46.20s.

This Saturday Williams feels he can go faster. He told the Weekly News that he has been working on the start of his race with his coach Neil Harrison.

“I’m feeling okay going into my second 400M. Working on the first part of the race as I usual tend to jog the first 200M.”

ROAD TO WORLD CUP 2018:

Harrington sees home clash as pivotal – But TCI still underdogs

TECHNICAL Director of the TCIFA Craig Harrington is upbeat about our national football team’s chances of reaching the second round of the CONCACAF Qualifying series in the quest for a place in the 2018 World Cup football finals.

In an invited comment Harrington said that playing the last clash (March 26) on TCI soil in the home and away series against St. Kitts and Nevis should work in our favour, especially with vocal spectators on a known surface.

“Playing the return leg, at home in front of our own supporters, gives us an edge. If we can come back home still in the tie then running out under the lights in the second leg, with the atmosphere in our favor, gives us an advantage.”

The TD is in no way underestimating the importance of the first game which is billed for March 23. He is aware that a big defeat in the opener can be too huge a blow to recover from.

STILL UNDERDOGS Although he is hopeful for a home ground advantage, Harrington feels that we are still underdogs to most of the region’s teams. “…The other countries in the region know they are in for a difficult time when they play us, but at this stage apart from a few teams we are very much the underdog in these games.”

In our first round we will have an uphill battle, especially since we have been here before.

In 2000 as a young footballing nation (participating in our first official FIFA competition), we had attempted this same road, and were humbled by the same team.

In the away game we lost 8-0 (our biggest international defeat to date)-for an aggregate finish of 14-0.

There has been a lot of local development in the last 15 years, but St. Kitts and Nevis are still favourites. That team has been a sleeping giant in the Caribbean. In 1997 they finished second in the

Caribbean Cup and in 2012 they were ranked 106 in the world. They also have a number of players in England and T&T. In the latest FIFA rankings we are at a respectable 176, which is 27th in CONCACAF (better than the Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, USVI, Dominica, Nicaragua and Anguilla). St. Kitts on the other hand are ranked 16th in CONCACAF and 119 overall.

OVERSEAS FACTORS With the San Antonio Scorpions FC forward Billy Forbes and newly drafted Massachusetts based New England Revolution player Marco Fenelus already selected to travel (barring any club team restrictions); TCI could become the Cinderella story of the first round.

Forbes has been instrumental

for his club team (led the league in assists for the full 2014 NASL season) while Fenelus, who scored in the 2-0 win against BVI last year, has acknowledged that he is now a much better player.

TCI has youth and quickness and for Harrington he is excited with what he is seeing.

“It has been three good weeks of preparation so far. The group of players we have here is growing stronger and they are bonding together very well. At the moment the atmosphere is one of optimism and a confidence…”

Currently 24 players are training; however the best 18 will travel.

It we do manage to get past St. Kitts we will reach El Salvador in June. That Central American team is ranked 10th in CONCACAF and 87 in the world.

Craig Harrington is hopeful that a home field and a vocal TCI crowd can give our footballers the edge in the March 26 clash against St. Kitts and Nevis.

2015 Southland Conference Indoor Championships:

Garland feels “stronger and faster”

Angelo Garland feels he is stronger than last month when he broke his national indoor 400M record.

ANGELO Garland might just break into a 2.0 version when he competes at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships next Monday and Tuesday after an impressive training session this week.

The national 400M record holder, who broke his indoor record for the third time last month, feels in tip top shape. “…So far practice this week has been good. I felt faster and stronger.” It has been four weeks

since my 400M (record breaking feat) and I’ve gotten way stronger since then. My coach told me I have the potential to go faster.”

Not only did the Texas A&M University sophomore run 48.44s (to eclipse the 48.47s he ran in February of 2014), but he also made a personal best in the 200M with a time of 22.31s.

Next week at the meet in Alabama, Garland will run the 400M, the 200M and the 4X400M.
