“I WANT to thank all of you for coming and welcoming me home. In a way, I feel like the prodigal son and I love you so much, and this day will be in my heart forever no matter what happens in the future; the love that I received here tonight and the last week will stay with me forever.” These were the closing words to an impromptu speech delivered at a Providenciales church by former Premier Michael Misick as he laughed self-consciously to the accompaniment of shouts of “we love you too, Mike’. A smiling and seemingly relaxed Misick arrived via private jet at the Providenciales Air Centre at about 7.30pm Monday night (January 13) after being let out on bail about one hour before. The ex-leader faces a charge of conspiracy to bribe and is due to appear in Supreme Court for a sufficiency hearing on Friday, March 7. Vehicles clogged the streets in
front of the Air Centre on Old Airport Road as scores of people welcomed him to Providenciales. Following his arrival a motorcade procession travelled along Leeward Highway with horns beeping all the way to the Abundant Life Ministries International for an hour long service presided by Bishop C Alexander Williams. Giving thanks to God for the safe arrival of the former Premier, the Bishop invited him to say a few words to the cheering supporters assembled at the church. “I am so humbled by the outburst of all of my brothers and sisters; it is so good to be back home. “When you hear people say there is no place like home, trust me, there is no place like home,” Misick said. He briefly recounted his experience while imprisoned in Brazil, stating that the will of God saw him through. “Being in prison anywhere is not good. Being in prison away from home

where you have no family and friends; that is only by the grace of God…” Observing that everything happens for a reason, Misick told his supporters that in order to have a testimony; one has to go through a test. “And for the longest while I have been tested and what kept me going is my faith and the scriptures; I read the Bible every day and one of the verses that stuck with me is, ‘If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can move mountains’.” He admitted to his followers that he had acknowledged that this day would soon arrive. “I accept that this would come, but it seemed so far. Every time it… seemed further and further away, but it is through God’s grace and his mercies that kept me, because of the love that I know you have for me and I have for you I wanted to come to see you and be among you; not as the former Premier but as your friend.” The former Chief Minister said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love he received throughout the TCI since arriving on January 7.

He added that what the experience has done for him is brought him closer to God. “Because I used to see the Bishop preach when I came to church and say that if God take you to it, he’ll take you through it, and now I can testify he’s right, because in the early dark days in prison I thought that I would never make it.

Ten pledge land and property for Misick’s bail TWELVE million dollars in land and property, strict conditions, a private jet to the TCI mecca of Providenciales and Michael Misick was out on bail and back among the people. Chief Justice, Edwin Goldsbrough on Monday evening (January 13) granted bail to the former Premier after receiving sworn testimony of ten Belongers who put up their land and properties –which exceeded the proposed $10 million – to secure Misick’s release from Her Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk. He has to report to a Providenciales police station twice daily, among a number of other strict conditions imposed by the Chief Justice. A statement from the Misick family was released on Wednesday afternoon. They thanked everyone who prayed for him, inquired, and
sent well wishes while he was imprisoned in Brazil. It continued: “A special thanks to those who agreed to act as his surety so that he could be released on bail. “Michael is pleased to be home to squarely face the allegations against him. Michael’s concern has always been that he and his co accused should receive a fair trial, preferably by their own means. That remains his hope.” Meanwhile, during the bail hearing in the Providenciales Supreme court, lead prosecutor of the Special Investigations and Prosecution Team (SIPT), Andrew Mitchell made a submission that Misick’s sufficiency hearing which was initially set for March 7, be brought forward. However, defence attorney, Oliver Smith did not agree to this,

Premier Rufus Ewing - who he stood beside while the Bishop was sermonising - along with ministers of the Government. “We have a great country. We have a great country my people, but we have to take our country back,” he declared to loud applause and shouts of ‘Yes’. “We have nothing to fear; if you conquer fear then you can conquer anything, because it is fear that robs us of our mission. Fear robs us of destiny; it is our destiny to be a free people, to be a purpose people and we should not be afraid to demand that we get our country back.” He assured the congregation that God is their midst, and with his presence amongst them, they need not be afraid. “And with us deciding that we are not going to be afraid anymore, no matter how hard they try, we will stand up and be counted. “And even if we have to go through persecution, you got to stand for what you believe, you got to not be afraid. You got to not see wrong and call it right.” He further encouraged them
to go back to basics – family, prayer and God. To swells of cheers, raised fists, clapping and shouts of agreement, Misick exited the stage at the Abundant Life church with this call to his supporters: “Let us take our country back; let us not be afraid. Let us challenge the status quo, let us fight for our freedom, and let us fight for our independence…” In brief comments, Premier Ewing summed up the sentiment of all those gathered at the church. “It is a great night; a great night.” Ewing observed that there is much work to be done now; assuring the former Premier that they are all praying for him and will continue to do so. “Enjoy and we will surely enjoy having you and together we will do it,” he added. Bishop Williams then anointed Misick with oil, followed by several benedictions by the congregation. As the former Premier exited the church he greeted several excited people - hugging and sharing a word with some – while several others vied for his attention. (DI)
although no denial was put forth to the suggestion. Up to press time, March 7 remains the date that Misick is expected to appear before the Supreme Court for that hearing. Mitchell suggested to the court both on Monday and during the plea and directions hearing of Misick’s co-defendants on January 7 – that judicial discretion be used to bring the sufficiency hearing to an earlier date. Ordinarily, a defendant has a period of up to 35 days after his arraignment in the Magistrate’s Court before that hearing. Goldsbrough indicated that he is prepared to do this, however it is now up to Misick’s legal team

whether they will agree to the date being brought forward. When contacted, Smith indicated that he will no longer be representing Misick, and that he only did so for the bail hearings. According to information from the Governor’s Office, the former Premier will be added to the information against his co-accused - comprised of a former PNP leader, former ministers of government,
prominent local attorneys and others. They face money laundering and a plethora of other charges. One week after arriving at the JAGS McCartney International Airport in Grand Turk to what many have called a ‘hero’s welcome’ and being charged with conspiracy to bribe, the former Premier was welcomed to Providenciales with a church service in his honour, attended by scores of people. Woman fights off armed burglars – Thieves threaten victim with rape and murder A WOMAN is recovering from painful injuries after attempting to fight off two men armed with a knife and machete who raided her home on Monday (January 13) evening. The thieves brutally beat the victim and threatened to rape and kill her, before making away with possessions worth thousands of dollars. The Providenciales homeowner of two years, who asked to remain unnamed, spoke candidly to the Weekly News this week about the traumatic incident. It began at about 6.50pm when she was in the kitchen of her home in Lower Bight making tea, she explained. The main steel door of the kitchen was open but the screen door was closed and locked. The woman thought she heard something on the step and as she looked out of the screen door she saw a man crouched down low right against the wall. Startled, she began to scream as loud as she could at him – asking what he was doing in her home and demanded that he leave. Just then another man emerged from behind the first; they crashed through the door and made their way inside where they jumped the victim and knocked her down to the ground.
“They told me to ‘Shut the f*** up’ and that they were going to kill me,” she told the Weekly News. The man who had her pinned was holding a fillet knife with a six inch blade but during a struggle the victim grabbed it, turned it around and began to push it into him. The second man who was standing nearby holding a machete violently kicked her about the head and stomped on her face. He shouted for her to shut up and said that they were going to rape her. As that was happening, the man on the ground turned the knife back around and asked the woman where the money was. One of the burglars then pulled the woman up on the ground and held her in a choke hold that almost caused her to black out and the other kicked her knees out from underneath her. The men stole the woman’s rings off her fingers and ripped her diamond earrings from her ears. Then they grabbed her backpack and filled it with items including an iPod, an iPad, a Toshiba laptop, a house phone, a Blackberry cell phone, $95 in cash and a Nikon underwater camera. Thirteen minutes after the attack began at about 7.03pm the burglars
took off and the dazed woman quickly contacted a police officer friend who called 911 for her. However it took more than half an hour for the police to turn up to the scene and no ambulance ever arrived, she said. That evening she went to the hospital for a CAT scan and x-rays but despite huge amounts of swelling and bruising she was told she had not sustained any serious injuries. The woman, originally from Canada, told the Weekly News that this is the first time she has ever experienced violence of this type in the TCI after vacationing in the country for more than 18 years. “They’re not going to scare me away, this is my paradise. There are some very good people on this island. “I love Turks and Caicos. I feel peace here, I feel content here.” She said that she has been inundated with offers of help from all over the island including people she has never met before. “I haven’t been alone since it happened. There are a lot of people here that are very nice, very loving, very kind.” She described the men as dark skinned with short black hair, aged continued

A Weekly News column that puts you on the spot for your opinions on the issues of the day
Ambulance service
LAST week the Weekly News exposed details of a sub-standard ambulance service that is putting the lives of the public at risk every day. Limited financial backing and cooperation from the Government has led to insufficient numbers of workers, decrepit equipment and badly maintained trucks. Former frontline members of the Government’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spoke openly to the Weekly News about the appalling conditions they were forced to work under. But the Government was unwilling to respond to requests for comment on the shocking state of the emergency service. What are your thoughts? Have you had any personal experiences with the service? What do you think should be done?
Illogical spending
What do you expect? Given the appalling maintenance condition of most Government and police vehicles, and the joke that is the Government garage, it is no surprise that even the recently-purchased, brand new ambulance is in unreliable condition. It seems that the police force is about to get a new shipment of vehicles for their use, and I wonder how long it will be until they start falling by the wayside, and are no longer suitable for patrol duties? Notwithstanding the Government’s claims that ministerial travel is necessary to keep this country in the worldwide loop, how much better could the ambulance vehicles be made if they had received the funds allocated to even one of the Minister of Health’s ‘jaunts’ overseas? Yes, our Government is, and is always likely to be, faced with limited cash resources, but it absolutely infuriates the population to
see the illogical and selfish way those limited resources are allocated – on trips and benefits that directly favour the ministers and senior officials, but are of very limited, if any, benefit to the population at large! Just like putting the kindergarten class in charge of the school!
Maintenance is vital
As usual, we want to have all the modern amenities, but we do not maintain a darned thing! This applies to fire trucks and equipment, garbage trucks, roads, schools, etc. The short-sightedness in budgeting for repair and maintenance on Government assets is abysmal. Nobody here seems to understand that you cannot just drive these vehicles without REGULAR maintenance! We might as well stop peeing away money on capital purchases until the persons in Government responsible for asset maintenance wake up and budget enough to do repair and
Woman robbed at knifepoint in Blue Hills TWO men armed with knives robbed a 26-year-old woman as she was walking down Bible Street, Blue Hills, last week. At about 6.25pm on Thursday, January 9, the crooks approached the lady, threatened her and demanded her bag. The terrified victim gave them her brown bag – which contained cash, ID cards and a Samsung cell phone – and they fled the scene. Police responded to the incident and established a crime scene which specialist forensic officers examined. The culprits are described as two black men, one wearing a navy blue shirt and black pants with a red shirt covering his
face, and the other wearing a red shirt and black pants with a black shirt covering his face. Detectives of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information. maintenance on an ongoing basis.
Been too long
This problem was reported years ago during the interim administration who promised new ambulances. It should have been picked up by the clinical audit we were told was underway months ago and then quickly corrected.
No justification
It’s an appalling situation. Here we have persons willing to do the service yet still they are not being giving the necessary tools and equipment needed to perform any arising medical task due to the lack of these much needed equipment and supplies. Yet still the Government say they are for the people. The siren on the ambulance is a joke. My grandson’s toy fire tuck is louder than that. You would have to be looking in your rear view mirror to know the ambulance is trying to pass you. It would make you laugh if it was not such a serious thing. We have got to do better. The Government will not respond because they cannot justify why things are not up to par.
Healthcare failure
It is not only the ambulance service it’s the hospital on a whole that is putting people’s lives at risk. People who are waiting for their work permits to be renewed or are in between jobs, unemployed persons, the elderly and even children have been turned away. Due to the hospitals’ outpatient policy not to dispense medication and the fact that there is no pharmacy on site, poses a serious risk to some people. These matters coupled with the simple fact that non-complicated procedures are being referred abroad due to lack of skills or equipment is making the expense of the hospital stifling and unbearable.
Fifth estate takes control
It is investigative journalism like this, of the TC Weekly News digging into real issues that gives me confidence. One wonders sometimes about the relevance of our elected representatives on healthcare issues such as this. It seems that in the TCI our future to fight real issues like these lie not in the elected but the fifth estate - media, respected journalists. Our elected representatives in the PNP and PDM are really proving useless and ineffective because media voices in the fifth estate are emerging to fill the gap of representation left by our elected officials. Our Government is really on vacation, travelling and content to sitting by to allow the Governor’s Office and the Permanent Secretaries to set policy. We have elected a gluttonous and useless bureaucracy and are calling them ministers. PNP Government where is your voice? PDM Opposition where is your cry for the people on these issues? It is time both sides get pressured to dig,
dig, research write, cajole, make noise, and represent real issues. We need to pressure to stop these elected people from getting paid so that they could represent.
No more blind trust
I do wonder sometimes what kind of Government we have here in the TCI. It is like the TCI is on remote control and that they are elected to leave our country at risk. What a problem and dilemma we face as a people. Why can’t the ministers sit down and budget for the ambulance services, why can’t they go to visit, show concern and even care? Our country, our people, our tourism and people are at risk because of this lack of care and concern. Hon Ewing you must be proud of yourself as Mike Misick’s lead negotiator on the hospital deal, creating a situaton where funds are not available for things as serious as the ambulance service. I think the Rt Hon Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, as Leader of the Opposition and the Hon Sean Astwood need to come out and call for a Commission of Inquiry into all of this. I mean ALL - the hospital contract, the weak budgeting and funds because of the payments to the hospital deal, the way the hospital is run, the inability of the Government to regulate the hospital. Because of what Rufus Ewing did and how the PNP forced through that rip off deal - no monies are in the budget for the ambulance service. We are being ripped off, under budgeted for in critical areas such as health, education, scholarships, poverty alleviation and our Government is asleep at the wheel. The people’s trust is being misplaced. We can no longer have any more blind trust into any elected official because this Government is selling us down the river.
Buy health system back
InterHealth Canada is getting away with murder - all that money they are getting from the national health scheme, they should pay for EMS and not the Government. I am surprised to learn today that the Government is expected to pay for EMS services - financial rape. Which idiot was in charge of these major downfalls we continue to reap from that bad hospital deal? We have to buy our health system back and create an accountable and reliable system that has sense and a heart for the people of this country, get serious and put this health system in perspective. Without vision the people will perish.

Crown loses again in front Gov’t proposes drone programme of Judge Ramsay-Hale to help fight illegal immigration
JUDGE Margaret Ramsay-Hale has once again ruled against the Attorney General Chambers, this time in a case involving Trade Wind Industries (TWI). On Thursday (January 16), the judge handed down her decision in a case in which the AG Chambers sought a stay of the injunction filed by TWI questioning the AG’s authority to appoint an arbitrator to adjudicate a $100 million lawsuit. In its application for a stay, the Crown submitted that if the company wants to challenge the arbitrator, it has to be done in arbitration. Ramsay-Hale also refused the Crown’s application for permission to appeal her decision and ordered them to file a defence in the proceedings. The defendants in the case are the Governor, the TCI Government and the Attorney General. In 2012 the plaintiff filed a $100 million lawsuit against former Governor Ric Todd and the TCIG for breaches of leases and malicious falsehoods. That matter was heard before Judge Ramsay-Hale early last year. She ruled that the case should be heard in open court and not in arbitration as the Crown argued. However, that ruling was later overturned by the Appeal Court and the matter was sent to arbitration. Three arbitrators were set to be appointed - one by each side and the third jointly. Lawrence Cohen QC was appointed by the plaintiff, while Kenneth Rokison QC was appointed by the Crown. However, according to the injunction filed by TWI, the TCIG did not give permission for Rokison’s appointment. The AG at the time, Huw
Shepheard, had claimed that as AG he did not need authorisation from the TCIG for the appointment. But in a subsequent and separate court summons filed by the Premier Rufus Ewing, this assertion was questioned. In that case – which is currently before the Supreme Court - Ewing is asking the court to decide whether on the true construction of the 2011 Constitution, the AG has the authority to institute, prosecute and defend civil proceedings on behalf of or against the Government without Cabinet’s knowledge or approval. In her ruling in the TWI’s case on Thursday, Judge Ramsay-Hale said that she takes the validity of Rokison’s appointment as a matter for the court to decide. She asserted that given the circumstances of the company’s injunction, and the court filing by the Premier in which he too questioned the authority of the AG while referencing the TWI’s proceedings, the court is better place to determine the issues raised in the company’s statement of claim. TWI, in its injunction also seeks discharge from the arbitration agreement with the Government. It also wants a court declaration that the Government did not appoint Rokison; that he is not the second arbitrator pursuant to the arbitration agreement and, to the extent necessary, an order removing him as such. It claims Rokison does not have the authority to take part in the appointment of a third arbitrator. The company further claims that the arbitration agreement between the parties was repudiated and as such is at an end. (DI)

in their early twenties. One man was slender, about 5ft 7ins and wore a black woolly hat with a white cloth mask. He will have stab wounds to his abdomen and damage to his face following the attack. The other man was of a larger build, about 5ft 6ins and wore a black woolly hat and low slung baggy jeans with white emblems on the back pockets. “Material things don’t matter, I was just angry they were doing this to me,” the woman said, “who says they can break into my house, what gives them the right to do this? “That’s why I was fighting. They wanted to kill me and they wanted to rape me and I was not going to allow that to happen.” Police are investigating the incident. Police Commissioner Colin

PREMIER Rufus Ewing has indicated that this year his Government will be exploring opportunities to introduce a drone programme to help curb illegal immigration of Haitians to the TCI, with the assistance of the UK and the Bahamian government. He made this announcement during a press conference at the Hilly Ewing Building on Providenciales on Friday, January 10. The Premier was at the time outlining the measures the TCIG will be taking this year to boost its border control and immigration issues. He noted that Government is looking towards increasing both its reconnaissance and surveillance of borders at sea as well as in the air. “Our police plane that used to do some surveillance is currently down - even though they were down they were just equipped with man power, there was no equipment - but we are looking to source airplanes with all of the various radar on board as well as the cameras.” Ewing said they will also be looking at welcoming proposals from individuals to operate the drone programme and detailing the cost involved. After which, he added, Government will be seeking assistance from the UK government
for support in acquiring it. “And we will be looking towards trying to work with the Bahamian government and see whether or not we can do a partnership with regards to the costing involved in the operation which can be very costly on an ongoing basis, especially if you are going to do at least three or four by-passes per day between here and Haiti.” He added that the programme has benefits for the Bahamas as the same route to get to the TCI, is used to go to the Bahamas by the illegals. He said his Government hopes to get to get the system up this year. In the short term, however, the Premier noted that there is not much else they can do other than what is already being done with regards to being vigilant in its radar surveillance. “I think the persons who are operating the radars are doing an excellent job of identifying vessels. It seems like we are also capturing the majority of them; we don’t have as much undetected landing and so we are doing an awesome job of intercepting them and finding them by radar.” He said they would like to get to the position whereby reconnaissance

can be done further out at sea. “This is better done by an aircraft because then you can seek the assistance of the US Coast Guard who have a greater ability to turn them [illegals] around at sea. “Because once they reach our shores, we can’t turn them around to go back to Haiti. So this way it would decrease our cost in terms of detaining them and then repatriate them.” On Christmas Day 17 Haitians caught attempting to enter the TCI aboard sloops lost their lives. The vessel they travelled from Haiti to TCI in capsized as it was being towed towards the dock to offload them. Thirty-three others were rescued and taken into custody. An investigation was launched into the incident, but so far there has been no information from the police on this. The Premier told the media that almost all of those rescued have been repatriated to Haiti, while some others are detained as what he termed ‘persons of interest’ to the authorities. The bodies of the deceased have been autopsied and will be released to the Haitian consul soon, to be sent back to Haiti. (DI)

Nothing untoward with $31m overspent by interim administration – Public Accounts Committee chairman CHAIR of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Sharlene Cartwright Robinson has given assurances that there is nothing untoward with the recent revelation that the interim administration had in one year overspent by $31 million without statutory approval. Speaking with the Weekly News on Thursday (January 16), Cartwright Robinson expressed a different view from that held by the Government, which considers the report delivered to the House of Assembly on December 16, very damning. “Actually it is just that I don’t think we have ever had that level of over expenditure and it is just the whole casual atmosphere under which the former Chief Financial Officers’ were acting that went completely against what we were trying to do…” she explained. She noted that what is left to be done and what is conventional is for the Government to now pass a
Supplementary Appropriations Bill for the over expenditure - for fiscal year 2011/2012 - which will make the spending legal. “There was nothing untoward; I mean we saw where the expenditure was. People came in and told us where it was, but it is just that they didn’t get the proper authority to spend at the time. “We convened hearings and the primary purpose was to find where there was over expenditure and what steps they took to obtain supplementary appropriations that would take them outside the budgeted amount.” She added that the majority of the officers who appeared before the committee were able to provide answers as to where the monies went, while there were some others who appeared not to care. “This was the kind of thing that caused our biggest problem in the Public Accounts Committee; we ended up going through a lot of the

information for the first time when in fact the first place it should have been done was in the Audit Department. “But they [CFOs] were sluggish and not responding at all to audit, and because we came there as the PAC and we discussed issues with individuals, we got the information that audit should have gotten.” Reiterating that there was nothing
Solutions to inadequate ambulance service rejected SUGGESTIONS put forward to the Government to fix a failing ambulance service were twice rejected, according to former chief Patrick Riel. This week the ex-Director of TCI Emergency Medical Services (EMS) explained his frustration at a continuous lack of cooperation from TCIG officials during his four year employment. It follows a report in last week’s Weekly News that exposed an inadequate emergency service that consistently put people’s lives at risk despite the best efforts of staff. Insufficient numbers of workers, elderly equipment and badly maintained trucks were among the issues that were highlighted by former frontline employees. And it was all down to a lack of funding and cooperation from the Government’s Ministry of Health, they said. In a statement to the newspaper this week Riel, who is an experienced manager and critical care paramedic of 25 years, spoke of his efforts to make changes. He said he had “multiple solutions to the dilemma” which were formally presented to the Ministry of Health on two occasions. The first time was in 2011 in a situational analysis requested by Dr Jamilah Berry and the second was
in a 2013 report – but the comments were ignored, Riel said. One of his strongest solutions was to use the Red Cross or St John’s Ambulance international models, or to copy the United Kingdom’s emergency service system. He also suggested that the service could be developed from within InterHealth Canada rather than directly through the Government. And finally he said that a formal request for proposal could be put out for a third party service to enter into a public private partnership. Meanwhile during his four years with the service he said there were a lot of attempts made to improve day to day operations that were ultimately rejected. One such example was the introduction of a helicopter medevac from Parrot Cay direct to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre’s emergency department. “Parrot Cay is offering to fund all heli-medevacs from North Caicos to Cheshire Hall through a programme we developed, but the Ministry of Health won’t look at it,” he said. “If you recall there was a bad motor vehicle collision in North Caicos in December and the casualties had to sit and wait for a plane - then when they finally arrived in Provo there was no ambulance again. The helicopter was the solution.”
Canadian Riel previously worked for the Ontario Ministry of Health from 1993 to 2003 as a trauma medic and training officer before becoming an educator and lecturer. He was employed by TCIG in 2010. One month ago Riel resigned from his post citing a lack of cooperation from the Government as his reason. He said he received a letter of termination from the Ministry of Health just hours later, while the ministry claims they terminated his post prior to receiving his resignation. Days later he wrote to the Weekly News explaining his frustration with attempts to create a modern and efficient department and the problems that he and his staff had to deal with on a daily basis. Alexandra Delany from Ontario, Canada who was employed as an EMT in Providenciales for a total of 15 months also spoke out about the department’s problems. “I do believe that lives were at risk,” she said. “If there was an emergency while the ambulance was understaffed or broken down then we would not be able to help the public. “And if we did respond but did not have the proper equipment then we could cause further injury.” This week despite repeated requests the Government continued to refuse to provide comment on the failing ambulance service. unseemly about the over expenditure, Cartwright Robinson assured that the PAC was able to account for the majority of the overspending. Asked if writing a supplementary bill now is more or less a technical issue, the PDM leader said it is. “It is just to say that we now legalise the spending, after the fact.” However, when asked at a recent press conference about what the Government intends to do now that it has the PAC report and recommendations, Premier Rufus Ewing made suggestions of convening an inquiry to look into the matter. “I still think there is even more accounting to do, but I won’t comment on that right now, but we can just see the magnitude to which there was lack of good governance and transparency during that period and I think it goes even beyond that and there are more things that we need to uncover,” he told the press on January 10. He added: “It’s a damning report; it tells a lot and I think there needs to be some answering as to what went on and why and all that.” Asked who will do the asking and when, Ewing pointed out that while he holds this as very important in
the scheme of things, his attention is presently on moving the country forward. “I know these are things going back and they have to be answered but my role is not to let that distract me right now. “That is important, but I have equally important tasks ahead of me in getting this economy going and creating efficiencies.” Meanwhile, one of the recommendations laid out by the committee in its report is the need for accounting officers to maintain upto-date records in order to produce regular financial operating reports. This is in an effort to ensure accurate information is available for management to identify problems as they arise and make informed, proactive and correct decisions. The committee also suggested that the TCIG forms a long term strategy involving an upgrade of accounting staff, accounting systems and records as well as improved accounting controls to ensure up-todate financial reporting. This, the report says, will integrate performance measurements and reporting techniques into the day to day management of government operations. (DI)
Protest against illegal employment on Middle Caicos
HIRING of non-legal residents to carry out Government work will not be tolerated, according to a release from the Ministry of Labour this week. The statement came after people were seen demonstrating on the streets of Middle Caicos on Monday morning (January 13) against the breach of Government awarded contracts. It is alleged that a contractor hired to clear the roads of overgrown plants and debris employed non-Belonger labourers who did not have up to date work permits. Donhue Gardiner, Minister of Border Control and Labour, wrote: “I am aware of the demonstration that took place in Middle Caicos today [Monday]. “I have today instructed my ministry to dispatch a senior labour inspector and an assistant director of immigration to Middle Caicos to investigate this matter.”
He said that he would be calling on Cabinet to review the manner in which contracts are awarded on Wednesday (January 15). “I will further ask for a full review of the contracts that pertain to this incident, and where the hiring practices are in breach of the contract, the necessary actions will be undertaken,” he said. “It is my view that contracts should only be awarded to individuals who are prepared to exercise hiring practices, wherever possible, that would benefit the communities in which these works are to be done. “I am dismayed that contractors would, by their hiring practices, side-line and bypass Turks and Caicos Islanders, and bring disrepute to a Government programme that was meant keep our Turks and Caicos roads clean and beautiful and in addition, assist the unemployed to find temporary work.”

McAllister Hanchell Gov’t and Opposition blame charged with perjury each other for no decision FORMER Natural Resources Minister under the Michael Misick administration, McAllister Hanchell, has been slapped with a charge of perjury by the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT). A statement issued on the behalf of the SIPT from the Governor’s Office stated that Hanchell appeared in a Providenciales Magistrates Court charged with the criminal offence on Thursday (January 15). The case has been adjourned to the Supreme Court for sufficiency hearing on March 7. Hanchell has also been charged by SIPT with conspiracy to bribe, conspiracy to defraud the Government and money laundering. He, and ten others similarly charged, appeared in the Supreme Court on January 7 for a week long plea and directions hearing. The perjury charge was first laid against the former minister last year,

but on January 7, SIPT prosecutor, Andrew Mitchell told the court that the Crown needed additional information against Hanchell in the count. As such, that charge was not read to him. He pleaded not guilty to the other charges against him and will, along with his co-defendants, appear in court on March 31 when the judge will rule on whether they will face a jury trial or not.
Five burglaries in two days
PRIVATE possessions worth thousands of dollars were stolen during five burglaries which took place in Providenciales on Monday and Tuesday (January 13 and 14). Among the items taken were a black RCA 36 inch flat screen television, a black Toshiba 24 inch flat screen television, a black Sony Vizio 40 inch television, an HP laptop and cash.
Police listed the number of incidents in a crime report to press but were unable to provide further information. Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers on 1-8008477 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page www. crimestoppers.tc. Information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
FOUR months after a resolution to convene a committee to review the 2011 Constitution was passed in parliament, the Government and the Opposition still cannot reach a mutually acceptable agreement about who the seventh member will be. As one side accuses the other of dragging its feet and using the constitution as a convenient crutch to complain about, the other alleges that they have not been presented with any suggestions as to who the last member will be. Leader of the Opposition, Sharlene Cartwright Robinson recently criticised the Ewing administration for not being aggressive enough with the review of the instrument, which she said they dedicated 2013 to complaining about. She was at the time responding to the Throne Speech delivered by the Governor in parliament on January 9. Asked what the hold-up was with the appointment of the last member – who has to be agreed upon by both sides – Premier Rufus Ewing told media on January 10 that he is still waiting for a suggestion from the Opposition. “As far as I know, we have submitted all of our names from our side – Akierra Missick, Don-Hue Gardiner and Carlos Simons – and I have also submitted two additional names… “…I have submitted a third and

all of them were rejected by Leader of the Opposition and I have not yet seen an alternative name from Leader of the Opposition. So if there is any foot dragging it’s the Leader of the Opposition dragging her foot and I have to find out whether that is intentional or not.” He added that at this point in time he does not care who that person is; that he will take anyone. According to Ewing no names have been submitted to him as yet by the Opposition. However, while acknowledging that the Premier did in fact submit names to her, the Opposition Leader has strongly refuted his claim that
she has not. “I recommended the President of the Christian Council, since then I haven’t heard any recommendation from the Premier at all as to anyone else,” she told the Weekly News on Thursday (January 16). “We had a meeting when DonHue [Gardiner] was acting Premier to discuss if I had a name. “December 4 was our last contact about the seventh person, so I said to him that I am still recommending that we use the President of the Christian Council… and his response on December 4 was that he will look into that and then we will discuss it; that was it.” The party leader said there has been nothing since that time. Information reaching this publication in November last year, indicated that Father Bernard Been of St Monica’s Anglican Church was to be appointed as the seventh member. However, this was later refuted by Cartwright Robinson, who said that no agreement had been reached on his appointment. The Weekly News had learned at the time that People’s Progressive Party (PPP) member, Zhavago Jolly was put forward by the Opposition, but there was no agreement to this pick. Speaker of the House of Assembly, Robert Hall officially appointed the six persons chosen by both sides last December 16. (DI).
Motion passed to seek amendment of reserved businesses categories AT THE first sitting of the House of Assembly on January 9, a motion to expand the reserved categories of business for Turks and Caicos Islanders and to support the review of the establishment of a business support unit was passed. The motion was taken to the assembly by elected member for Blue Hills, Goldray Ewing. It listed a number of recommendations to ensure that local businesses are able to compete in the current challenging economic times. The motion wants Cabinet to expand the reserved business categories to include petty, medium and large contractors; printing; provision of security services; watersports and tours; restaurants that are not a part of a hotel operation; agriculture and aquaculture; gift shops not part of hotels; commercial fishing licence; commercial processing fish plant licence; franchise fast food restaurant licence; horseback riding tours and rentals; power generation and sale of equipment; exterminator license; pharmacy; marriage licence for
marriage officers; entertainment-like event planning; medical laboratory licence and ferry services. Ewing’s motion also suggested that the assembly encourage the Government to review the need for the establishment of a business support unit, geared at small businesses to provide guidance and support to these businesses as well as lead the way in accessing capital for their use. It also wants Cabinet to introduce other changes in the reserved businesses schedule - which forms part of the regulations under the Business Licence Ordinance - to further protect Turks and Caicos Islanders in joint business ventures which fall under the reserved categories. The proposed changes state that in these joint ventures with foreigners, that the TC Islander should receive the majority share, and that this share shall not be sold or transferred, other than to another Belonger who should maintain the majority share. It further recommended that any change to the business must
be reported and that any further injection of capital into the business by the foreign partner should be considered a loan, attracting rate of interest not exceeding that offered by a commercial bank on a saving account or certificate of deposit account. Additionally, it recommended that in order to discourage fronting, the Belonger partner needs to take an active role in the business in a managerial capacity; have some knowledge or skills of that business so they can contribute to the strategy and goals of the business and they must also be a signatory on all business accounts and share in the profits and benefits of the business. The motion also recommended that an annual certificate be produced by an auditor and agreed to by both or all partners, to confirm copyright. It added that the certificate should accompany the request for renewal of licence verifying that the TC Islander has received what was due financially under the partnership agreement.
Although the motion received majority support from the assembly, with two abstentions and one no, Premier Rufus Ewing told the media on January 10 that while he understands the passion and concern of the Blue Hills member, there was no need for him to take such a motion to the assembly, as his Government is already working on it. He further pointed out that the Government is committed to looking at the reserve categories and doing it properly. “It doesn’t mean that I have to accept the ones that you say must be reserved. Because my information shows me otherwise; my consultation with members of the community like the young people whom I think are the main business owners of the future of this country is saying otherwise.” The Premier said the information he has and what was put forward for amendment and review within the motion may not match. “That is the unfortunate thing about the motion; you wanted to say this is what you should do as
opposed to what Government - who has the information - ought to do. We are the Government,” Ewing stated. He added that Government recognises that there needs to be a protectionist scheme so that local businesses can capitalise on opportunities offered without unfair competition from outsiders. “We have been going through the business licences categories thoroughly, looking at them from a statistical standpoint in terms of what is the uptake of a particular category, how many businesses exist now in that particular category, how many are owned by Belongers, how many are owned by foreigners. “The reasons why certain businesses may not be owned by a Belonger - if it’s because they are not interested or they can’t get capital so that we can make an informed decision as to when you put a business into a reserved category.” The Premier added that his Government knows what its job is and that they have the access to the information in relation to this issue that the Opposition does not. British attack plan Dear Editor, With all the ducks now lined in a row, with the return of the former Premier Michael Misick, the British are surely geared up with their plan of action for the upcoming trials. I must state at the outset that I do have several concerns. Long before Iron Mike uttered the words in the Commission of Inquiry that he did not feel he could receive a fair trial in this jurisdiction; I personally had little faith in the local judiciary. The British sought the opportunity to jump on that statement and overshoot with several immediate actions which would seem to tip the playing field in their favour. This forced me to action, preparing petitions for the return of our 2006 Constitution, a date for election and the return of a democratically elected government and a reversal of the trial by judge alone in criminal cases in the Supreme Court. It was long and tiresome work, and despite attempts made, some persons refused to endorse the petition, playing directly into the British hands and all changes being sought were implemented with little objection from the vast majority. As was the situation in the past, HMG continues to reap hefty paydays and make poor decisions absent the input or consideration of the people of the Turks and Caicos. There was no possibility of them gaining our trust because they labelled the vast majority of our citizens as corrupt people, with neither the intelligence to identify
and solve problems, nor right to our own self-determination. So now after years of disrespecting, disregarding, oppressing, depressing and stressing our people, they wonder why they are viewed as public enemy number one. Garlick’s contract was originally for two years, that time has since long passed, along with the pocketing of over half a million dollars monthly and several million of our tax payer money annually. Of course the fruits of her labour are yet to be seen while she stifles the development of our country in what is turning out to be the longest case in history. The Turks and Caicos people, as history will show, are a forgiving people, thus the reception of Misick upon his return. I am sure the Brits were taken back by this, but the fact is the longer they dilly dally, the more people seem forget and forgive. Guilty or innocent will be proven in court, but I believe I speak for the majority of people when they say they wanted a swift resolution long ago, so the country can move forward. So what is the British plan of attack? Some say it is an old strategy, to divide, conquer and rule. I beg to differ. They may have successfully divided the people, they most certainly have ruled, but conquer, they will choose not to do. I am sure they anticipate the call for the jury trial that is coming and they may even give in for fear of not
Misick is not a hero
seeming draconian to the rest of the world. As incredible as it sounds after all these years, dismantling our elected government, discarding our constitution, uprooting the civil service, closure of TC Invest, TCI Bank, selling our shares in the water company and our land for pittance while they get rich and fat. It is all a sham and they are not going to win by design. I am sure many persons are wondering how I came to this conclusion. There is no possibility that we will see the return of Governor Tauwhare for the upcoming trials as was the case of the Bloom Cooper Commission when two previous Governors, Turner and Strong were called to testify. I am also quite certain that the conductor will also not be charged or called to testify for his involvement in these so called corrupt mishandlings. In short, the British came to stamp out the systemic corruption in the Turks and Caicos, only to discover that they and their counterparts were also at the route of it. So I ask you, are they going to be fair and follow the twisted road to the bitter end or are they going to do the usual sweeping under the carpet and stand by their motto: ‘Corruption is corruption by any other name than British’. Dear Editor, The enthusiastic welcome of the former PNP leader was isolated to diehard PNP supporters. There is a real body of confusion going on in the dark of the former Premier’s return to the Turks and Caicos Islands as a fugitive from justice and the man who sold the TCI people and their future out. Cameras, film and photos may paint a message but this cannot be a “heroes’ welcome”. To say so would fly in the face of common sense, justice and the reality that we in the TCI face of Mike Misick’s dubious and awful legacy. Singlehandedly, like a bull in a china shop, armed with developers monies he went wild in selling everything in the TCI before the interim government. He fathered the interim government, created the need and our future was gone. The enthusiasm coming from a few diehard supporters can be best be characterised as that. Most Turks and Caicos Islanders, residents, well-wishers and supporters are sensible, serious and do not welcome Mike Misick’s return at all except to face a dubious justice. Mike Misick is not a hero, his tenure as Premier was fatal to long term empowerment of all TC Islanders. He cannot be heralded as a hero. The world must know that his return was welcomed mainly by a rag-tag team of unthinking, diehard PNP supporters. Calling him Mandela is a fatal mistake and if that gets out TCI should apologise to the African National Congress. It is insulting. Mandela was a freedom fighter and he went to jail trying to end
racism and apartheid. Mandela was a national hero, a real hero, not a coward, not a runner and he certainly fought with his life and freedom for his people. As a result of Misick’s regime TC Islanders are not free. Our constitution is reduced, ministers have no powers and really are messengers for Permanent Sectaries, the Attorney General is occupying ministerial turf, taxes on all are going up, we are suffering from an anaemic economy and our future is uncertain. It cannot get out that we all support the insanity and the unthinking PNP government of 2003 to 2009. It was a nightmare because it held the country from having real growth for its people. The world, the press, the media, the thinking TC Islanders must all know the welcome was isolated to die hard PNP supporters but in no way could it be said that a majority of TC Islanders welcomed him back. Most hold the view that he is certainly not a hero. While one can understand family, brothers, sisters etc coming to his aid, we see some preachers ignoring the need to set proper examples rushing into aid this man. Their business. But let’s not get this one twisted, we are dealing with a situation where the word coward, sell out, anti-hero, bad leader, selfenricher at the country’s expense, or that of the poor comes to mind. His inner circle and a few others benefited but as a country we have all been really and truly set back as a result of his regime. Ingrid Williams
COMMENTARY
Awards, signals and life support AS 2014 begins we look forward to a better year. 2013 was a painful year because nothing really happened. It is hard to comment on nothing so you look for signals. Here is one. A gent who facilitated the loss of millions of pension funds into an ill-fated bank while he sat on the board of that bank is now reappointed to the pension board. When the appointment, which is usual in itself, is done by the former chairman of the bank’s directors it heightens pension concerns.

from the pension fund. Then yet another Brit appointee has to apologise for misquoting someone important on the pension fund who said they want to protect pensions while approving the $10 million transfer. As Hamlet said: “Something is rotten in Denmark.” Now the House of Assembly suspends all the rules to pass laws the majority of voters don’t want but then tries to use those same rules to incorrectly silence another warning on another subject. This and a 44 per cent win is what is now called democratic government.
Immigration and education problems require concerned policy makers and open discussion not constitutional changes. In 13 months this has proven hopeless. We have devolved from steady progress way back when to what we have today. Business in the USA has devolved from manufacturing to a playground for lawyers attacking every product, doctor and medical pill or device. We are told private insurance will make it affordable again. Here we understand we are going to manufacture something with imports from Haiti and the Bahamas but they
don’t say what. The photo on TV of our Premier wearing a nice expensive dark suit while wearing that silly bright yellow cap proves something as does his hand holding with the former leader and cronies. TCI has been bankrupt for some years now and is on British life-support with a $260 million loan so we can continue to send millions to the friends of those who got honorariums for doing what they were told to do. The calendar says it’s 2014 but economically and politically it’s the dark ages.

Public asked to help Caribbean neighbours KINDHEARTED residents can now easily donate cash to help their disaster stricken neighbours in St Vincent and the Grenadines. A bank account number has been made public and gathered funds will be sent directly to a charity that is supporting victims of the Christmas floods. This week the TCI Red Cross put out an appeal for people to come forward with financial assistance after torrential rains and flooding left eight people dead. Director Lormeka Williams told the Weekly News: “This appeal is as a result of the deadly flooding caused by torrential rains on Christmas Eve night through Christmas morning in St Vincent.” More than 20 homes were
completely destroyed and an estimated 400 were seriously damaged, along with hospitals, water supply systems, bridges and roads. Williams explained that many families were traumatised and are struggling to gather basic necessities. Anyone wishing to make a donation can deposit cash into account 1660958 at First Caribbean International Bank and it will go directly to the St Vincent Red Cross to aid them in offering on the ground help. “Your generosity in assisting to meet the needs of the victims of this disaster would be greatly appreciated,” Williams said. Landslides and flooding also reportedly killed five people in the neighbouring island of St Lucia over Christmas.
Jason Beach is the new GM of Colonial Insurance Brokers
Colonial Insurance appoints new boss A NEW finance expert is at the helm of a leading Turks and Caicos Islands insurance brokers. Jason Beach, 42, has been appointed as the general manager of Colonial Insurance Brokers (CIB), which was launched earlier this year. In December 2013 he moved to the Islands from Leicester in the United Kingdom, where he was a director of the company Brokerbility. “I am delighted to be working in the Turks and Caicos,” Beach said in a press release. “It is a pleasure to be working in such a beautiful place where the people are so friendly and welcoming. “This is an exciting time for Colonial and I am thrilled to be a part of it.” CIB set up shop in April 2013 and is part of the Bermuda-based Colonial Group International Limited.
Its website states the firm is “an exclusive group of like-minded, high quality independent brokers”. It adds: “The brokers within the organisation were selected for their reputation in the insurance marketplace and as a result are all well established, highly ethical, well managed and forward thinking businesses in their own right.” The company took over the business of International Insurance Agency Ltd (IIA), which had been operating in Turks and Caicos Islands under the ownership and management of Colin and Edna Sterling since 2001. Paul Brierley, Colonial Insurance Company Limited’s executive vice president of property and casualty, said: “We are delighted to have someone of Jason’s calibre on board. He has a lot of experience and I know he will fit in well and help drive the CIB business forward in one of our key markets.”

TCI could experience an earthquake THERE is a low to moderate chance that an earthquake could strike the TCI in the future, according to disaster experts. A recent study into seismic activity contradicts previous views that the country is immune from such a natural disaster. This week the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) within the Ministry of Government Support Services released a statement on the findings. The seismic analysis was undertaken by US Geological Survey (USGS) as part of the TCI Building Code under the Hurricane Ike Recovery and Rehabilitation Project. Named the Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Programme, it states that there is a low to moderate level of susceptibility in the Turks and Caicos Islands to seismic activity. A statement to press from the DDME read: “This is contrary to the view shared by the populace that the Turks and Caicos Islands’ susceptibility to earthquakes is low.” The country lies on the North American plate, approximately 150 kilometres to the north of the active plate boundary Puerto Rico Trench. This region has experienced major earthquakes and is the source of several Caribbean tsunamis. “Based on this finding, the seismic coefficients which have been incorporated into the new Building Code reflect the higher levels of susceptibility,” the statement said. The assumption is that the whole of the TCI falls into site class D, which following the International Building Code standards prohibits unreinforced masonry and concrete
walls without ‘special’ ductile detailing. This design category also gives height limits on other forms of construction such as light weight timber frames. An updated Building Code will be released by the Planning Department in early February and design professionals and contractors are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new building code and the improved seismic safety criteria and requirements it contains. This past week as a gesture of respect to the victims of the deadly earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, the TCI Government named it Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Week. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives on January 12 four years ago when disaster struck the already impoverished Caribbean country. The event from Sunday (January 12) to Friday (January 17) not only helped residents to remember those who lost their lives and homes to the natural disaster but also helped to educate them on protecting themselves and their families in the event it occurs in the TCI. A number of activities were organised throughout the week by the DDME including the promotion of earthquake and tsunami education in schools and the distribution of pamphlets, posters and brochures. A special prayer was said in churches up and down the country for the people of Haiti who continue to suffer from the aftermath of the disaster, and an earthquake drill was carried out to demonstrate the need to be prepared.
The DDME also sent a public and information officer to Jamaica to observe and participate in their yearly earthquake and tsunami campaign. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the island of Haiti and was followed by at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5. About three million people were affected by the quake, 316,000 of them lost their lives, 300,000 were left wounded and over a million people were made homeless. According to the Haitian government, it is estimated that 250,000 residence buildings and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsed or were severely damaged. The USGS report stated that the Haitian earthquake was felt in Cockburn Town and Cockburn Harbour in Grand Turk. “After the Haiti earthquake many persons in the TCI felt a few of the aftershocks and the TCI was placed on a tsunami watch,” the DDME statement said. “Chaos ensued as many persons were not sure how to respond, some took to the streets, the DDME office phones were constantly ringing with persons seeking pertinent information etc. “In this regard, we would like to increase our public awareness for these specific hazards in order to ensure that in the event that there is another earthquake that as a country our people will be better prepared to respond.” The DDME is encouraging residents to visit the department’s Facebook page to read tips on earthquakes and tsunamis and ways in which they can protect their families.
Kids to create promotional eco jingle SECONDARY school students are getting musical this term as part of a green competition with big prizes. The youngsters have been asked to create a jingle on energy efficiency and conservation, which if successful will feature on the television and radio. FortiTCI has teamed up with the Government’s Energy and Utilities Department to run the contest as part of their Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation Awareness Campaign. They are offering a prize of $500 gift certificate to the winning student and $1,000 cash to their school, while second and third place winners will also receive cash prizes for their school. A statement from the Energy
and Utilities Department explained that the competition seeks to “increase the level of awareness and education on the issues and benefits surrounding the efficient use of energy and the smart choices we can make in our daily endeavours as consumers of energy, as purchasers of electrical appliances and equipment, as builders and designers and motor vehicle owners and operators”. The competition is open to secondary school students across the Turks and Caicos Islands and all individuals or teams are limited to a maximum submission of two jingles. The jingle must convey the message and spirit of saving energy through energy conservation and the use of energy efficient appliances.
It must contain the following two phrases ‘Be energy smart’ and ‘FortisTCI Smart Connect’ and can be in the form of a full band recording, percussion or acapella. It must be original and never have been published anywhere, submitted to any previous competitions or won any previous awards. Deadline for submission is 12pm on Friday, February 14. Further details can be obtained from Malike Cummings at mlcummings@gov.tc. The statement explained: “We are committed to educating the community about energy conservation and energy efficiency as well as renewable energy technologies and the promotion of sustainable energy initiatives in the TCI.”

Premier Rufus Ewing offers the support of the Government
There were a number of musical selections throughout the afternoon
Alice and Alice shopping centre on Airport Road in Providenciales
Government officials, religious leaders, construction workers, family and friends all attend the event
Shopping centre opens on Airport Road TO DELIGHTED cheers and applause from scores of well-wishers the ribbon was cut on a brand new two story shopping centre on Saturday (January 11). The stunning orange building on Airport Road in Providenciales was the brainchild of Pastor and Lady Branford E Dean, who named it Alice and Alice in tribute to their beloved mothers. “It has always been a vision of my wife and I to have a place that we call home for our business,” he said. A two hour dedication service was held at the building to celebrate the achievements of those whose hard work made it happen. Government officials, religious leaders, construction workers, family and friends all attended to wish the couple good luck with their venture. The event began at 4pm and was moderated by a charming and entertaining Portia Clarke who welcomed guests and presented speakers to the colourful podium. First to talk was Sister Stephanie Duncanson who gave the welcome address before guests joined in a rousing rendition of the national song. They then joined in together to sing the hymn ‘Jesus Hold My Hand’ before Pastor Conrad Howell, president of the Providenciales
Ministerial Fellowship, gave remarks. He said: “Brother Dean I’m proud of you; I’m proud of your accomplishments, I’m proud of this wonderful example of what is possible in our Turks and Caicos. “May the lord continue to bless you quite richly and let that blessing continue to overflow to other places.” Premier Rufus Ewing then took to the podium to speak on the new development and offer the support of the Government. “I stand here first of all a very proud Turks and Caicos Islander,” he said to whoops and cheers. He described Pastor Dean as “someone who has a vision, someone who has faith, someone who is blessed”. “You are blessed to have a wonderful supportive wife, a wonderful supportive family, such great architects, designers and construction workers.” He said the building was an example of the infrastructure that the Government would like to see in the TCI. Ewing spoke of the sad departure of Dean’s mother Alice and added: “I’m sure that she is happy to know that you were able to succeed in your venture.” Minister of Finance Washington Misick was next to offer his well-

wishes to the couple. He spoke of a Government focus on small businesses and added: “It is important that whatever happens in this country that we take the people along” before stressing the need to “broaden and deepen the middle classes of this country”. Following a lively hymn ‘Victory in Jesus’ Amanda Missick, Minister for Environment, Home Affairs and Agriculture, offered her brief remarks. She said: “I assure you this will get much support from the residents of Kew Town. May God bless you and may God bless your business.”

A beautiful solo song from Robin Hinds followed before Pastor Napthali Cooper from the Lord’s House Freeport, Grand Bahama, took to the stage. He told those gathered that Pastor Dean had always served the Lord and always been humble. “This is a testament to prove that God always rewards faithfulness,” he said. Bishop C Alexander Williams then read the dedication as attendees joined in with their pre-written responses. Pastor Branford E Dean stood with his wife by his side to speak of
the venture and thanked those that helped to make it happen. “It has been a journey – everything that could have come up against this vision came up, but we persevered.” He spoke of his mother and mother-in-law, both named Alice, who he dedicated the centre to and thanked his wife for her support. “I thank God for all the friends we have made in this venture and here we are celebrating what he has done.” They then cut the ribbon to the front doors of building to the joy of those gathered who cheered and applauded the couple. Nutrition in Demand Move-a-thon raises more than $7,000 MORE than 270 participants attended the Nutrition in Demand Move-a-thon on Saturday (January 11) and helped to raise thousands of dollars for nutrition education. According to Tamika Handfield, registered dietician and executive director of Nutrition in Demand, funds have not been completely tallied up as yet, but with just a preliminary count there is already more than $7,000. The third annual event started at the Children’s Park in the Lower Bight at 5.30am and consisted of a 5km, 10km or half marathon walk, bike or run. Handfield said the funds raised will be used to host a nutrition and physical activity summer camp, continue nutrition education and culinary classes for the schools as well as help the disease prevention workshops on the other islands. Feeding birds IT SEEMS like most people like to watch birds at the bird feeders and birdbaths. It’s a great pastime and wonderful to provide food for these beautiful creatures. It’s also an option for those who may not be able to have a pet, but could have a bird feeder - children and adults alike love to watch the birds. Small species, which are more constrained energetically, benefit greatly from feeding. We should be consistent in feeding them, since irregular feeding can be hazardous to birds, which establish habitual foraging patterns. When choosing seeds think about the birds that interest you and the
types of seeds that will attract them. Small black oil-type sunflower seeds are overall the most widely preferred bird seed, so these normally are the major portion of seeds offered. They have high energy content and the thin shells allow easy use. White proso millet is another attractive seed used especially by smaller birds and a small amount of finely cracked corn is good in a mix. Safflower is being used increasingly. Unsalted peanuts and other nutmeats can make an attractive addition to a feeding programme and will appeal to a variety of birds. Keep in mind that birds prefer good quality seeds that are reasonably fresh - seeds that are too

old or of poor quality may be avoided or just scattered from the feeder onto the ground. Small holes in sunflower seeds, for example, may indicate insect damage and reduced quality. Niger thistle seeds, which are often used in finch feeders, are highly attractive when fresh but may be rejected when several months old. Although commercially packaged seed mixes offer a convenient way to get started in bird feeding, such mixtures often contain large amounts of filler seeds that birds do not prefer, and the seeds may not be as fresh as ideal. A good alternative is to purchase preferred seeds in bulk and mix your own, or try fresh specialty mixes available from sources that specialise
in bird feeding products. One seed combination that is attractive to a wide range of desirable backyard songbirds is 50 per cent sunflower seeds, 35 per cent white

Stiletto points It took a while to get the trend of stiletto nails off of the ground but more women are rocking the sharpened statements, even manicurists! Oh and even myself! The look is not for everyone but if you’ve been considering it you can start with a more subtle point to achieve the illusion of the stiletto while maintaining length. You can go for a more oval or rounded tip as well. Nail charms A fun way to really set your manicure apart from the rest, nail charms! For this look though, it’s best to opt for an overall look that is a tad toned down, you don’t want to look over the top. ‘way-back-when’ and it’s definitely not the basic pink and white norm. Go for a nice fade or a strong contrast of colours, like black and white if you really want to set this look off. Tip: You can do this yourself! Simply start nails off with one solid coat. Let it dry completely. Once dry, use hole-punched sticker close to your cuticle fill in the half-moon shape. Paint from edge out for a seamless effect. Bold prints Tribal, Aztec-inspired, chevron, and gingham patterns are coming to fingers near you.
These prints can be difficult to draw by hand, but with help from Sally Hansen, Essie, and OPI nail polish stickers they’re easy to achieve. Luckily for us in the Turks and Caicos, there are tons of skilled nail techs that can help you pull this daring look off. Tell the ladies at ‘Stylez Above the Rest’ I sent you! Nudes If you’re not the type to play it up, you can keep it simple. Nudes are always super chic. You can give your flesh tone manicure an illusion of depth by experimenting with different mono tones or tone-on-tone textures. Tip: Alternate painting every other nail with two similar colours of nude, or paint every other one with a matte top coat.

IMAGINE you have worked really hard and built yourself a really nice and expensive house, but because of the time involved, you have not spent much time on the outside of the house. The yard needs to be cleaned, the gate is broken and the house is in general disrepair. It really doesn’t matter how beautiful the inside is because the outside gives the first impression. Let’s apply this same scenario to our bodies. We may exercise and stay fit and avoid foods we think are not good for us but if we don’t pay attention to our teeth and oral health, the rest of it will soon become pointless because we soon won’t be able to eat anything! Our mouth is the gateway to our body and good nutrition starts with caring for our teeth from an early age. According to a factsheet printed by Colorado State University: “The food we eat affects our teeth. At the same time, the health or lack of health of our teeth and gums affects what we can eat.” This is so true because without our teeth we can’t chew foods high in fluoride and calcium which can lead to poor overall health and malnutrition. Many people, myself included, really do not like visiting the dentist but it is something that needs to be done to ensure we have, not only beautiful, but healthy teeth that can last throughout our lifetime. This process of ensuring we have teeth that lasts a lifetime starts even before we see the first signs of teeth formation. Fluoride is the mineral mainly responsible for the formation of strong healthy teeth. Fluoridated water is usually the main source of fluoride in the diet but fluoride can also be found in fish and teas. On the other hand, bacteria are the main culprit of tooth decay. Bacteria need carbohydrates for food so that it can grow and multiply. By cutting back on simple carbohydrates, such as sodas, candies, cakes and cookies, the rate of dental caries can be reduced. Bacteria seem to prefer sucrose, also called table sugar, but other simple carbohydrates, such as fructose (fruit sugar) and lactose (milk sugar) are easy to ferment and also promote bacterial growth. The Canadian Dental Association suggests the following tips to care for your teeth: Try to choose sugar-free snacks, add less sugar to coffee or tea (or use sugar substitutes), avoid sugar-sweetened soft drinks and look for fruit juices and drinks with no added sugar. Read lists of ingredients when you’re grocery shopping. Honey, molasses, liquid invert sugar, glucose, and fructose are all types of sugar. Avoid sticky sweets; they cling to teeth and are harder to brush away. Eat sweets with a meal, not as a snack. The increased flow of saliva during a meal helps to wash away and dilute sugar. Carry a travel-size toothbrush and use it after eating sweets. If you can't brush, at least rinse your mouth with water or eat a fibrous fruit or raw vegetables.

Play on – Music and exercise I CAN’T imagine exercising without music. Can you? How often do you see a professional athlete preparing for the game with headphones on, getting ‘in the zone’? Many of us have ‘go to’ play lists for that extra burst of energy while training. Can you imagine an aerobic or spin class that is silent? There have been more than 60 studies looking at the benefits of music, either before sports or during exercise. Exercise and sport didn’t really explode until the Walkman was introduced in the 1980s. It has grown astronomically with special mp3 players adapted for in water sports or to play music in your ski helmet. Music still played a role in heavy work before then - the drummer on the Roman slave galleys of the Mediterranean set the beat of the rowers and the songs and chants of prisoners that were assigned chain gangs helped them through heavy labour. Music has been to found to have a number of positive effects on exercise. Anyone who has attended Zumba class can attest that the beat drives the rhythm of the exercise.
This is called synchronous effect. This was the same effect of the drums on the rowing slaves. But there is more to it than that. Music has also been found to work in other ways as well. Listening to music before a sport allows an athlete to escape from anxiety as they prepare. It stimulates arousal (think of how one of your favourite songs gets your heart pumping) and helps to focus on the task at hand. In addition, during training it has been shown to have a positive effect on exercise. It improves endurance by acting as a diversion from the
hard work you are doing. Studies indicate it may improve performance as much as 15 per cent for some activities and some people. This is not without limits; it is most effective at levels of moderate intensity, at maximum effort it has little effect, probably because the nervous system is less attuned to any outside stimulus at this exercise level. On your next trip to the gym, pack your music player, select your playlist and get the benefits of music for synchronising your workout, getting you pumped up and improving your exercise tolerance.
POLICE SAFETY TIPS
Keeping kids safe from crime UNFORTUNATELY no neighbourhood is completely immune to crime. However, there are steps you can take to help keep your family and your neighbourhood safe. Know where your children are. Have your children tell you or ask permission before leaving the house and give them a time to check in or be home. When possible, have them leave a phone number of where they will be. Help children learn important phone numbers. Have your children practice reciting their home phone number and address, and your work and cell phone numbers. If they have trouble memorising these, write them down on a card and have them carry it at all times. Tell your children where you will be and the best way to reach you. Set limits on where your children

can go in your neighbourhood. Do you want them crossing busy roads? Playing in alleys or abandoned buildings? Are there certain homes in your neighbourhood that you don’t want your children to go to? Get to know your children's friends. Meet their parents before letting your children to go to their home and keep a list of their phone numbers. If you can’t meet their parents, call and talk to them. Ask what your children might do at their house and if they will be supervised.
Choose a safe house in your neighbourhood. Pick a neighbour’s house where your children can go if they need help. Point out other places they can go for help, like stores or a police station. Teach children to settle arguments with words, not fists. Role-play talking out problems, walking away from fist fights, and what to do when confronted with bullies. Remind them that taunting and teasing can hurt friends and make enemies. Work together with your neighbours. Watch out for suspicious and unusual behaviour in your neighbourhood. Get to know your neighbours and their children so you can look out for one another. Visit www.tcipolice.tc for more information.

Haiti: Lack of political will allows ex- Region at risk from spread of chikungunya virus dictator Duvalier to escape justice A LACK of political will and unacceptable court delays are allowing Haiti’s former “presidentfor-life,” Jean-Claude Duvalier, to escape justice for human rights violations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said this week. The authorities re-opened a criminal case against the former Haitian dictator three years ago, shortly after he returned to the country on 16 January 2011, following a 25-year exile in France. He faced charges of serious human rights violations such as murder and torture of political opponents, and of corruption. But the case has stalled for almost a year. “It appears that the Haitian authorities have no intention of carrying out thorough investigations into Duvalier-era abuses,” said Javier Zúñiga, Amnesty International’s special adviser to regional programmes. “The judicial process has stalled, denying victims of his reign of terror their right to truth, justice and reparation. To add insult to injury, Duvalier continues to take part in public events, often at the invitation of the Haitian government.” Duvalier, also known as “Baby Doc,” inherited power from his father, the dictator François Duvalier, and ruled Haiti from 1971 to 1986. During his rule, Haitian life was marked by systematic human rights violations.
A lack of political will and court delays are allowing Haiti’s former “president-for-life,” Jean-Claude Duvalier, to escape justice.
Hundreds of political prisoners held in a network of prisons known as the “triangle of death”, including the infamous Fort Dimanche, died from mistreatment or were victims of extrajudicial killings. Duvalier’s government repeatedly closed independent newspapers and radio stations. Journalists were beaten, in some cases tortured, jailed, and forced to leave the country. He is also alleged to have embezzled between $300 million and $800 million of assets during his presidency. In January 2012, an investigating judge ruled that Duvalier should stand trial before a lower court for misappropriation of public funds, but that the statute of limitations had
T&T 12-year-old charged with ganja trafficking A 12-YEAR-OLD, who was found with marijuana in his bag at his primary school, appeared before a magistrate yesterday charged with possession of the drug for the purpose of trafficking. The boy, whose father stood at his side, pleaded guilty to the offence. The court was cleared for the matter. Defence attorney Dane Halls represented the child. Magistrate Siumongal Ramsaran heard from the prosecutor that it was around 12.20 p.m. on Wednesday that the standard five pupil’s bag was searched by a cleaner at the school after suspicions were raised by a teacher. Marijuana weighing 0.3 grammes was found. The child was charged by Constable Richard Guerra with having the drug for the purpose of trafficking as it was discovered on him within 500
metres of a school. The boy initially told officers he found the illegal substance at the school’s entrance. He later said a pupil had given it to him while he was at school. In speaking on the child’s behalf before the court, Halls said given the boy’s age he was “unable to navigate from clear and present danger”. He said the child lives with his paternal grandmother as his parents were separated, and wants to become a mechanical engineer. Halls said the boy had his future ahead of him and asked the court to reprimand and discharge his client. Ramsaran said the boy ought to be allowed to focus on his upcoming Secondary Assessment Examination (SEA). He reprimanded and discharged him under section 71:1A. No record will be made by the court of the child’s court appearance. (Trinidad Express)
expired on the human rights crimes he was accused of. Both the human rights victims and Duvalier appealed the decision. The appeal began on 13 December 2012. Duvalier appeared before the Court of Appeal in Port-au-Prince on 28 February 2013, for the first time giving public testimony related to alleged crimes during his rule. “In a country in which impunity for the worst crimes has been the norm, Duvalier’s presence in the court was a glimmer of hope for the victims and their families,” said Reed Brody, counsel and spokesperson at Human Rights Watch. “The Haitian authorities have an obligation to prosecute these grave human rights violations. Crimes including torture, extrajudicial executions, and enforced disappearances are not subject to a statute of limitations.” Between March and May 2013, eight victims gave testimony in court despite objections from Duvalier’s lawyers, who have filed an appeal in an effort to prevent the victims’ from exercising their right to participate in the proceedings as civil parties. Victims also faced the hostility of the public prosecutor who seemed to have aligned with the defense. Testimony concluded in May, and the Court of Appeal’s decision has been pending ever since. Multiple sources have told Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch that the Court of Appeal is waiting for some other procedural steps to be carried out before issuing its ruling. “Under Duvalier and his Tonton Macoutes militia, thousands were tortured, killed, and hundreds of thousands of Haitians fled into exile,” said Reed Brody. “Duvalier’s victims shouldn’t have to keep waiting and hoping for justice that never comes.” While the victims await the Court’s decision, Duvalier has been taking part in public events. Most recently, on 1 January 2014, he attended a state ceremony to celebrate Independence Day in the city of Gonaïves.
THE European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has reported further increase in the number of confirmed and probable cases of the chikungunya virus on the French side of St Martin and other Caribbean islands. In an epidemiological update on “autochthonous cases of chikungunya fever in the Caribbean region” on Saturday, the ECDC said that, as of Thursday, there were 201 “probable or confirmed cases” in French St Martin and two confirmed cases on the Dutch side of the island. ECDC also said there were 48 “probable or confirmed cases” in Martinique; 25 “probable or confirmed cases” in St Barthélemy; 10 “probable or confirmed cases, including one imported case from St Martin in Guadeloupe”; and one “confirmed case imported from Martinique in French Guiana. An outbreak of chikungunya in the Caribbean was reported from the French section of St Martin on December 5. According to the ECDC it was the first time that autochthonous transmission of the virus has been documented in the Americas. An ECDC risk assessment of the outbreak published on December 12
concluded that the risk of the disease spreading to other islands in the region was “high.” “Since then, new chikungunya cases have been reported from several islands in the Caribbean,” it said, adding that chikungunya transmission was detected during “an ongoing dengue outbreak in the Caribbean.” The ECDC said dengue and chikungunya viruses are transmitted by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito species. “The naïve population, the presence of an effective vector in the region and the movement of people in and between islands are factors that make it likely the outbreak will continue to spread geographically and increase in numbers,” it warned. Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease, transmitted by the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. It is endemic in parts of Africa, South-east Asia and on the Indian subcontinent. Last month, the Atlanta based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States said it was “closely following new reports of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus among residents of the French side of St Martin in the Caribbean.
Guyanese mum kills self after son ends life – father, sister had also committed suicide A 32-year-old woman on Wednesday succumbed at the Skeldon Public Hospital in Berbice, Guyana after she ingested a poisonous substance last Saturday, allegedly in reaction to her son who also committed suicide a few weeks ago. Dead is Nandranie Oudit of Number 68 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. According to the mother of the deceased Surujdai Singh, her daughter drank the poisonous substance because she could not cope with the loss of her 16-year-old son Arjune Oudit, a former third form student at Tagore Memorial High School who also died as a result of consuming gramaxone some five weeks ago. Surujdai said her grandson was involved with a girl for several months; however, their relationship ended abruptly and he subsequently drank poison because he could not handle the break up. According to reports, the family has a history of suicide. It was disclosed that the father and a sister of Oudit had also committed suicide but by hanging themselves. “Why me gotta punish so, me husband dead and left me, me second
daughter hang she self too and me work hard and mind me next two gal picknie (girl children) and now me big data (daughter) go kill she self,” Surujdai wept. The woman said she is left with her youngest daughter who is so devastated by the loss of her eldest sister following that of her beloved nephew that the family had to take her to a doctor. “She get blackout steady and she only crying and fall down, we gotta take she doctor,” the woman said. Surujdai believes her family is affected by a suicide curse. She is also fearful for her remaining child. “Me big daughter dead and left one pickney (child) and she lil sister and when pickney fa bury mama, mama gotta bury dem pickney, it is hard for me to bear this pain of losing me family like this,” Surujdai tearfully stated. Oudit leaves to mourn her husband Navin and a young daughter. Meanwhile, according to reports, since the start of the year, several persons have succumbed to suicide while others have recovered from suicide attempts and some are in the process of recovery.

Cayman Islands’ high rating, stable outlook maintained MOODY’S, one of the world’s foremost financial rating agencies, has maintained its very high rating of Aa3 for the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands has retained the Aa3 rating, and its accompanying stable outlook, continuously since 2000. In its latest report, Moody’s outlines that the high rating reflects a number of important considerations satisfied by the Cayman Islands. These include: a very high per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – the latest figure for which is US$55,075; a Debt-to-GDP ratio of 22.4% at the end of 2013, which is a comparatively low debt burden
viewed against other rated jurisdictions; a high score for governance indicators along with its political connection to the United Kingdom; and a very low susceptibility to Event Risk. The Minister for Finance and Economic Development, Hon. Marco Archer said: “The Government is very pleased with the high rating for the Cayman Islands being maintained and, equally important as the high rating itself, the outlook for the rating is stable. This should encourage investors to have utmost confidence in the Islands’ future.” (Caribbeanpressrelease. com)

Barbados government extends deadline for public service layoffs THE Barbados government has extended by 18 days, the deadline for laying off public servants following talks with labour unions on Monday. Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said the delay would allow the Ministry of the Civil Service to generate a list of names for those who would be retrenched as his administration seeks to turn around an ailing economy. He said the unions- the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) – would be involved in the process. “We had set the 15th of January for the taking of the first bit of action. That date must now be vacated because of the challenges posed to the Ministry of the Civil Service in even generating the list to be affected,” Stuart said. “But we are certain now that by the end of this month, we should be able to deal with those issues definitively and finally and of course between now and the end of the month the union will have an opportunity to further report on those issues,” he added. Last month, the government announced the plan to cut public
service jobs in a bid to save BDS$143 million (One BDS dollar = US$0.50 cents). It said it would also institute a “strict programme of attrition” across the central public service, filling posts only where it is absolutely unavoidable, over the next five years, ending 2018-2019. “This attrition is expected to reduce central government employment levels from approximately 16 970 to 14, 612 jobs – a projected loss of 2 358 posts; and savings of BDS$121 million. Over the current 19-month adjustment period public sector employment will be reduced by an additional 501 jobs with a projected savings of BDS$26 million,” said Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Chris Sinckler, who was also present at Monday’s meeting. The government said it intends to trim the service by 3,000 jobs and had hoped to begin laying off workers by January 15. Prime Minister Stuart said the layoffs would not include both breadwinners from the same household even as he insisted that the layoffs were unavoidable. He said a humane approach would be taken in preparing the list.
“When that list becomes available, then we will be in a better position to know what the exact fallout will be, but whatever the exact fallout is going to be budgetary targets cannot be compromised. “Having said that I should also make the point that we cannot allow our humanity to yield ground to the pursuit of budgetary targets,” the Prime Minister said. The meeting Monday followed two rounds of talks involving Sinckler and Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo as well as representatives of the two trade unions. ‘I think every Barbadian knows we have to do something,” said Byer Suckoo, following the latest rounds of talks on Saturday, while Sinckler said “we will respond formally on Monday to the proposals but I think they (unions) pretty well know where our position is. “Of course this situation cannot be allowed to drag on,” her added. But Opposition Leader Mia Mottley addressing the first “People’s Assembly” organized by her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) on Sunday night, called for the resignations of Prime Minister Stuart and Sinckler.
Jamaican-born transvestite could face murder charge in toddler’s death A Florida-based maritime lawyer feels that the Bahamas must get their act together to keep cruise coming to its shores.
Bahamas “one gunshot away” from being dropped by cruise lines FLORIDA-BASED maritime lawyer Jim Walker believes that Nassau may be “one gunshot away” from seeing cruise lines drop it from their cruising itineraries. Walker, partner at Walker & O’Neil, a Miami law firm that represents passengers and crew members injured or assaulted on cruise ships around the world, said he saw The Bahamas progressing along a path which led, in the case of countries like Colombia, to cruise lines pulling out of the destination. “We’ve seen a pattern of conduct with the cruise lines where they had extensive conversations with the authorities in the United States Virgin Islands, they complained about crime and when they didn’t get answers, they left,” he said. “My concern is that Nassau is one gunshot away from having cruise lines leave.” Walker, an attorney for 30 years
who has appeared frequently on US media outlets speaking on the topic of cruise safety, noted that his line of work saw him receive calls from aggrieved cruise passengers who were seeking redress over crimes they fell victim to. “We don’t receive calls from any passengers sailing into Alaska, Canada or Europe, except some from passengers pickpocketed in Naples or Rome, Italy, but as far as dividing the planet up into zones, almost 100 percent of calls relative to crime off the ship are coming from passengers who were in the Caribbean and that would include the most dangerous ports we’re aware of based on calls and volume of ports, such as Nassau, St Thomas, and Roatan, Honduras; but Nassau calls are the majority of the calls. “It’s robberies, sexual assaults, being held up at gunpoint,” he said. Law enforcement authorities in the US say prosecutors may this week empanel a grand jury and elevate charges to murder against a Jamaican-born transgender woman accused of killing a four-year-old boy. Prosecutors have charged Kryzie King, 27, born in Jamaica as Christopher King, with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and unlawful imprisonment in the death of Myls Dobson, who was found dead, last Wednesday in the bathroom of an apartment on Manhattan’s West Side. King was ordered held on US$500,000 bail. The medical examiner is yet to determine how the boy died. Police say the boy’s father, Okee Wade, 37, who is currently in a New Jersey jail serving time on a fraud charge, had turned over the care of his son to King. Court records show Myls was bound, gagged, beaten and burned during the three weeks King was taking care of the boy. Police said he was forced out into the brutal cold wearing only a T-shirt and shorts the day before he was found dead in the bathroom of King’s apartment. But the New York Daily News reported that Wade said he does not

know King and he was a “loving father” to his son. “I don’t know anyone named Kryzie King,” he told the paper in a jailhouse interview on Sunday, adding “They put in the paper that I was dating a transsexual. That’s just wrong! I like women. I don’t date men, and I don’t date transsexuals”. Prosecutors allege that the fouryear-old child did not have a full meal since December 26 and had lost at least 20 pounds while under King’s care. Prosecutors said paramedics said
they found Myls unconscious and slumped over in the bathtub. His broken body was covered with scores of whip marks, burns and bruises, and his testicles had abrasions on them. Myls’ mother, Ashlee Dobson, 29, told reporters she lost custody of her son after New York City’s Administration for Children Services (ACS) claimed she was an unfit mother. Newly-elected New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered an investigation into the case. (CMC)

Vatican faces UN sex abuse panel questions VATICAN officials are expected to face tough questions from the UN on the sexual abuse of thousands of children by Catholic clergy. Members of the Holy See - the city state’s diplomatic entity - will be grilled by a UN committee in Geneva. The Vatican refused an earlier request for information, saying the cases were the responsibility of the judiciary of countries where abuse took place. The Pope has said dealing with abuse is vital for the Church’s credibility. The Catholic Church has faced a raft of allegations of child sex abuse by priests around the world and criticism over inadequate responses by bishops. Last month, Pope Francis announced that a Vatican committee would be set up to fight sexual abuse of children in the Church and offer help to victims. He has also strengthened Vatican laws on child abuse, broadening the definition of crimes against minors to include sexual abuse of children. The Holy See is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, a legally-binding instrument which commits it to protecting and

Its first and only progress report was submitted in 2012 after intense criticism following 2010 revelations of child sex abuse cases in Europe and beyond. The Committee on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is expected to ask wide-ranging questions, forcing the Holy See to defend itself in public for the first time. It faces allegations that it enabled
the sexual abuse of thousands of children by protecting paedophile priests at the expense of victims. Last July, the UN Committee requested detailed information about the particulars of all sexual abuse cases notified to the Vatican since 1995. The questions included whether priests, nuns and monks guilty of sexual crime were allowed to remain in contact with children, what legal action had been taken against them, and whether complainants were silenced.
Over 400,000 displaced in South Sudan A MONTH of conflict has displaced about 413,000 people in South Sudan, the United Nations said Wednesday, after a major surge in the number of people fleeing violence in the past week. Representatives of the government and rebels have been holding talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but fighting continues to wrack the world’s newest country. Hundreds of people have been wounded and thousands displaced by heavy fighting over the past few days, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said Wednesday. The group, also known as Doctors Without Borders, said its teams had treated 116 people suffering from gunshot wounds in the towns of Malakal and Nasir in Upper Nile state amid clashes there and elsewhere. The violence has also forced about 78,000 to flee to neighbouring countries, the United Nations said, on top of the hundreds of thousands displaced within South Sudan’s borders. By 2020, the government plans to reduce the number of Army, RAF and Royal Navy personnel by thousands. The Ministry of Defence says Britain still has the fourth largest defence budget in the world. But Mr Gates, who served under presidents Obama and Bush, singled out cuts to the Navy as particularly damaging. Interviewed by BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he noted that - for the first time since World War One Britain did not have an operational aircraft carrier. “With the fairly substantial reductions in defence spending in Great Britain, what we’re finding is that it won’t have full spectrum capabilities and the ability to be a full partner as they have been in the
past,” he said. The spectrum refers to the ability of a country’s military to fight across air, sea and land. Mr Gates’s comments echo the concerns of other senior military figures. The Chief of the Defence Staff, General Sir Nicholas Houghton, warned last month Britain could be left with the “spectre” of a hollowedout force. Under the government’s plans the Army will lose 20,000 soldiers, the Navy 6,000 personnel and the RAF 5,000. Prime Minister David Cameron insisted in 2011 the UK retained a “pretty full spectrum capability” after the three service chiefs warned its reach would be diminished. Jonathan Beale, the BBC’s defence correspondent said the American’s latest intervention would be unlikely to reverse the cuts but would wound Britain’s pride. The MoD defended the level of military spending, adding that the UK had the best trained and equipped armed forces anywhere outside the US. (BBC)
Danish woman gang-raped in Indian capital Delhi Most of the 413,000 people displaced are women and children.
refugee agency, the UNHCR, while about 18,600 have sought refuge in Ethiopia. Nearly 6,800 people from Jonglei have fled to Kenya, many of them children. And an estimated 10,000 have fled into Sudan’s volatile West Kordofan and South Kordofan states. The U.N. refugee agency warned Tuesday that with fighting still reported in parts of South Sudan, particularly Jonglei and Upper Nile states, it expects more displacement both within and beyond its borders. The exodus has been fueled by the fighting and people’s fears,
combined with worsening living conditions and a lack of food in some places, UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards told reporters in Geneva, Switzerland. Many South Sudanese men are taking their families to the Ugandan border and leaving them there before returning to their country, he said. “From the refugees we have spoken to, we are hearing eyewitness accounts of killings, houses being burnt and shooting,” Edwards said. Within South Sudan, about 65,000 people have sought sanctuary at U.N. bases.
POLICE in the Indian capital Delhi are investigating the alleged gang rape of a Danish woman who lost her way near her city centre hotel. The 51-year-old tourist was attacked by a group of men in the Paharganj area on Tuesday evening. Police say she was robbed and raped at knife point. The woman flew out of India on Wednesday morning, police say. Scrutiny of sexual violence in India has grown since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus. The government tightened laws on sexual violence last year after widespread protests
following the attack. But violence and discrimination against women remain deeply entrenched in India’s staunchly patriarchal society. The Danish woman told police that she approached the group of men after losing her way back to her hotel near New Delhi Railway Station. The men robbed her of her belongings and raped her, police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told the BBC. “She reached her hotel and reported the incident to the manager who called in the police and the investigation is now under way,” Mr Bhagat said. Florida mom kills her two teens, self in murder-suicide a month after divorce: cops
Cecile Kyenge has faced a torrent of abuse since her appointment in April.
Italy’s only black cabinet minister calls for action on rising racism
ITALY’S only black cabinet minister has called for more support as she endures relentless non-violent racist attacks. Cecile Kyenge is in charge of efforts to integrate immigrant communities into wider Italian society and is frequently targeted by right-wing opponents. Ms Kyenge said Italy’s institutions and political establishment must do more. “Politics must stand up as one and condemn racism lest it become a dangerous weapon that can kill democracy,” the Congolese-born MP said. Ms Kyenge has faced a torrent of abuse since her appointment in
April from the right-wing Northern League party and its supporters. The League’s newspaper, La Padania, has just begun publishing her daily itinerary - presumably so that the hecklers will always know where to find the minister, says the BBC’s Alan Johnston in Rome. Last year, one of its most senior figures likened her to an orangutan. Another accused Ms Kyenge of wanting to impose “tribal traditions” on Italy. One of the League’s councillors even called for the minister to be raped. Ms Kyenge has been heckled, and had bananas thrown at her during political rallies.
HER financial woes and personal issues drove a Florida woman over the edge - and beyond. The distraught mother of two talented teen musicians shot her kids dead before turning the gun on herself in a gruesome double-murder suicide. Richard Berman, 51, found his bullet-ridden children, Alex, 16, and Jacqueline, 15, and their mother, Jennifer Berman, 48, dead of a suicide in their West Palm Beach home Monday morning — just hours after he received an email from the maniacal mom threatening harm to their shared children. Cops released the disturbing 911 calls from the moment Richard Berman and a neighbor discovered the bodies Monday morning. “It looks like she’s laid in bed but she doesn’t have a face,” the shaken neighbor tells the dispatcher of the suicidal mom. “I think the girl’s up in bed with her but when I saw what was upstairs I had to run back downstairs.” Richard Berman tells 911 that he was heading to the house after his “ex-wife said she was going to harm the kids.” “She sent me an email that she did the best thing for our family,” Richard tells a police dispatcher as he called 911 en route to the home. “And then she sent her cousin a text that she was going to kill the kids and herself.” Richard and Jennifer Berman had

only divorced in December, WPECTV reported, weeks after Jennifer’s mother had died last fall. Their home, on Pershing Way just off the Lake Worth Lagoon, was in foreclosure, the TV station reports, and the kids and their mother were to move out in February. “Oh, s--t,” Richard Berman says in the newly released 911 call after he finds his dead son in the house. “I was just touching his head. He wasn’t waking up. His alarm was on, he wasn’t waking up, there’s blood in his ear.”
The marital, and financial, woes in the family had existed for years. Richard Berman originally filed for divorce in 2008 - 16 years after they first married, the Palm Beach Post reported. The family was living lush for years, but by early last year, Jennifer Berman was struggling to get by without her ex-husband any longer in her life. The mom-of-two could no longer pay her divorce attorney in April and was in such financial straits, she was forced to sell her late father’s watch, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Utah mom shoots and kills two young daughters and herself A 32-YEAR-OLD Utah mom gunned down her two young daughters and then herself on Tuesday — just one day after her fiancé came to move his things out of their shared Syracuse home. Kyler Ramsdell-Oliva shot daughters Kenadee, 13, and Isabella, 7, around 6 p.m. before turning the gun on herself. Her fiancé, KSTU-TV reported, was outside with a U-Haul truck just as the gunshots rang out. Police had supervised the couple as the unidentified man moved his belongings out of the home around 6 p.m. Monday. Cops quickly ruled the man out as a suspect, the Deseret News reported. “It’s considered a murder-suicide,
so there are no suspects at large. We’ve spoken to the fiancé (and) we’ve spoken to the family. … And that’s when we came to the conclusion it was a murder-suicide,” Syracuse Police Officer Erin Behm told the newspaper. Police first came to the home Monday. About 24 hours later, tragedy struck. Police say the family had lived in the town for about three months — and the young girls had only just entered school. Kenadee, an eighthgrader at a local junior high, had only attended one day of school while Isabella, a first-grader, attended about a week of classes, the Deseret News reported.
AT least 61 people were killed and scores wounded Wednesday in the latest wave of attacks in the Iraqi capital and across the country. Bombings and shootings, aimed at security forces and civilians alike, made it an especially bloody day as sectarian violence flared up. The United Nations said 2013 was the deadliest year in Iraq since 2008, with almost 8,000 people killed, most of them civilians. Fears of allout sectarian war have increased since violence broke out in Anbar province in recent days. Much of the violence recorded Wednesday was in and around Baghdad. Twenty-two people were killed and 74 were wounded by seven car bombs and two roadside bombs that exploded in the Iraqi capital, targeting mainly Shiite areas, police said. Two of the bombs detonated near a busy market in the mainly Shiite area of Hussainiya, in northern Baghdad, police said. The deadliest bombing in Baghdad was in the predominantly Shiite al-Shula neighborhood in the northwestern part of the city, where a car bomb detonated at an outdoor

market, killing seven people. Violence flared outside of Baghdad, too. In Baquba, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Baghdad, 14 people were killed and 21 wounded in a bombing at the funeral of a school official, according to police. In Diyala province, gunmen attacked and kidnapped seven truck drivers in Alham village. Two hours later, the bodies of the drivers were
found. At least three people were killed in violence in Mosul, in addition to seven soldiers killed in a bombing south of Mosul. In Anbar province to the west, al Qaeda-backed militants and Iraq’s security forces are battling for control of Falluja and Ramadi. The violence recalls the bloody fighting at the height of the Iraq war that nearly tore the country apart. (BBC

Young Enterprise opening showcase reveals six groups THE SECOND Young Enterprise initiative was launched last Saturday, January 11, with an opening showcase where participants introduced and even began selling their products. Enthusiastic to succeed in their business ventures, five groups of students displayed their products under tents at the Scotiabank Graceway parking lot in Grace Bay under the observance of administrators, judges and a continuous flow of tourists and local community members. This year there are six groups registered to compete, five of which were present for the official launch. The business groups included DIY Products and Services, TCI in Style, Varieta, Rhythmic Flavours and Turks and Caicos Treasures. Products from the groups included tie-dye t-shirts, hair accessories, handmade jewellery, postcards, gift bags, TCI souvenirs, scented candles and sea salts. Angela Musgrove, chair of the Young Enterprise Board, said that she is pleased with the participation and variety of products showcased. “Some of them have some really new and creative ideas for goods and services…that’s exciting for us as the board to see them thinking and getting out there,” said Musgrove. However, she was a bit disappointed that there was a decrease from last year’s eight groups which attempted the challenge. She said that while students are eager to join the programme, there are difficulties in getting time
commitment from teachers to guide them. This year, only students in Providenciales are participating in the enterprise. While some groups comprise exclusively of students from Clement Howell High School, there are some that include a mixture of students from the Westley Methodist, British Colligate and the Turks and Caicos Community College. The UK based programme, which aims at developing entrepreneurial and employable attitudes and skills in students, is a partnership between the Government’s Youth Department and the Chamber of Commerce, with Scotiabank as the main sponsor. Students enrolled in the programme are 15 to 19-years-old and were required to set up and successfully run their company for the academic year. Apart from making and selling their products and services, they are required to elect a board of directors, present a report with accounts, market and eventually make a profit from an invested capital of $500. Throughout this year there will be three main events for the students to display their products and services instead of just opening and final showcase like last year. Musgrove said that there will be two more trade shows; one in March and the other in June. She also said that a contingent will go on a trip to the Bahamas to visit one of their major events of the year so that those involved can get bigger and more ideas of how the enterprise can work.

Grown Ups 2 tops Razzie nominations ADAM Sandler’s hit film Grown Ups 2 leads the nominations at this year’s Razzies, taking eight nominations. The comedy, about four childhood friends reuniting, took $247m (£150m) at the global box office, but was dubbed “Groan Ups 2” by critics. It is up for worst picture, sequel, ensemble and screenplay at the Razzies, which launched in 1980 as a spoof of the Oscars. Box office flops The Lone Ranger and After Earth are also multiple nominees. Sandler, who wrote and starred in Grown Ups 2, is in the running for worst male in a lead role. He is no stranger to the Razzies, having taken the worst actor title last year for his role in man-child comedy That’s My Boy. A year before that, Jack and Jill in which Sandler plays biologicallyimpossible identical male and female twins - made Razzie history with a record 10 awards. The 47-year-old won both the worst actor and actress prizes. What are the Razzies? Organiser John Wilson explains Grown Ups 2 is a sequel to Sandler’s 2010 film, which brought Sandler back together with US comedy show Saturday Night Live stars Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. The second instalment was one of the worst-reviewed films of 2013,

with an average score of 19 out of a 100, according to review aggregator Metacritic. “In the first five minutes, a deer walks into the star’s bedroom and urinates on his face. It’s all downhill from there,” wrote Matt Patches in Time Out. Branding the film “slothful” and “indulgent”, Empire Magazine’s Simon Crook criticised its “lumpen slapstick, casual sexism and a smug tone”. Supporting actors Taylor Lautner, Salma Hayek and director Dennis Dugan are also up for Golden Raspberry Awards. The other films nominated for worst picture were Johnny Depp’s uneven Wild West adventure The
Lone Ranger; Will Smith’s sci-fi misfire After Earth; Tyler Perry’s holiday comedy A Madea Christmas and comedy anthology Movie 43, featuring the likes of Kate Winslet, Richard Gere, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry. After Earth, A Madea Christmas and Movie 43 have six nominations apiece. The shortlist comes a day before the Oscar nominations, and the Razzies will similarly be handed out a night before the Oscars ceremony on 2 March. Winners generally fail to show up - although Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock have collected their gold spray-painted prizes in person. (BBC)
THE family of late soul singer Marvin Gaye has dropped a legal action against Sony/ATV amid claims Robin Thicke’s hit Blurred Lines copied one of his songs. A Los Angeles judge granted a dismissal of legal action which stated the music company failed to pursue a copyright case against Thicke. However, the Gayes’ separate case against the chart topper, rapper T.I. and Pharrell Williams remains ongoing. The artists deny copying Gaye’s 1977 song Got To Give It Up. In a pre-emptive legal action filed last August, they asked a court to rule Blurred Lines did not copy Gaye’s track. The musicians argued there were no more than “commonplace musical elements” between the two songs. But Gaye’s three children claimed in a counter legal action in October, stating that Thicke had infringed the
copyright of their father’s song After The Dance for his track Love After War. The family claimed damages and a proportion of the profits from Blurred Lines. The Gayes had accused EMI, a music publisher owned by Sony/ ATV, of failing to protect the late singer’s catalogue, suggesting EMI - which also manages the Thicke copyrights - did not want to stand in the way of the huge hit record, and a conflict of interest had arisen. The family and the music publisher have now reached a settlement, which has not been made public. Blurred Lines, which netted Thicke his first number one hit in the US, has sold more than six million copies to date in the United States. It also spent five weeks at the top of the charts in the UK and became the best-selling single of 2013.
‘Breaking Bad’ gets Golden Globes send-off as ‘Brooklyn’ boosted GOODBYE, “Breaking Bad.” Hello ... “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”? AMC’s drama about a teacher turned meth kingpin, “Breaking Bad,” capped its celebrated final season with a win for best TV drama at Sunday’s 71st Golden Globes in Beverly Hills. The series was nominated last year but had never won the Globe before. But maybe the night’s biggest shocker came with the TV comedy prize for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” Fox’s new cop spoof starring Andy Samberg, who also scored a headturning coup as lead comedy actor. “I couldn’t be more surprised,” Samberg told reporters backstage, adding that in his on-camera acceptance speech he had forgotten to thank his parents, not to mention
the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which organizes the Globes. Sunday’s wins could prove crucial for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which has earned generally strong reviews but has struggled in the ratings. Although the September premiere attracted 6.2 million total viewers, only a bit more than half that number have watched episodes since, according to Nielsen. On Sunday, the show was No. 1 in a field of much better known competitors: “Girls,” “Modern Family,” “Parks and Recreation” and “The Big Bang Theory.” “We’re very stunned, very grateful, very happy,” said “Brooklyn” co-creator Dan Goor backstage. more than 10 million total viewers. The creators are preparing a sequel, “Better Call Saul.” “The fans have lifted this up to a level that none of us could have predicted,” Bryan Cranston, who
played drug lord Walter White on “Breaking Bad,” told reporters backstage. Cranston also won the lead dramatic actor prize, after going home with nominations but no wins for the role three times previously.

Renowned Argentine poet Juan Gelman, 83, dies in Mexico ARGENTINE poet Juan Gelman has died aged 83 in Mexico City. He is considered to be one of the greatest authors in Spanish and was awarded the prestigious Cervantes Prize in 2007. Mr Gelman, a left-wing activist and a guerrilla in Argentina in the 1960s and 1970s, lived in Mexico for 20 years. He wrote more than 20 books and regular columns for newspapers. His son and his pregnant daughter-in-law died after
being abducted by the military government in the 1970s. Official accounts say almost 20,000 people disappeared at the hands of the regime in between 1976 to 1983, but human rights groups say the figure is at least 30,000. In 1990 Mr Gelman was able to identify his son’s remains, discovering that he had been executed and buried in a barrel filled with sand and cement. He was never able to find the remains of his daughter-in-law Maria Claudia.
CON drama American Hustle and space movie Gravity lead this year’s Oscar nominations with 10 nods each. American Hustle was shortlisted in all four acting categories for its stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. It is also up for best picture alongside Gravity, which earned a best director nod for Alfonso Cuaron and best actress for Sandra Bullock. 12 Years a Slave’s nine nominations included best director and picture. “I’m just very excited,” British director Steve McQueen told the BBC. “My goodness, nine nominations - a lot of them British. We worked very hard and we’re privileged to be in this position.” The film’s stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o were also nominated in the best actor, supporting actor and supporting actress categories. British film Philomena is up for four awards, including best picture. Captain Phillips, 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club and Her are also among the nine films nominated for the coveted top award. In the best director category, David O Russell faces competition from McQueen, Cuaron, Nebraska’s Alexander Payne and Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street. His film American Hustle is only the 15th movie in Oscars’ history to land nominations in the four main acting categories - although no film has ever won all the awards. Russell achieved the same feat

with Silver Linings Playbook last year, when all four of his key actors were nominated - with Lawrence winning best actress. The director told the BBC he was “humbled” by the nominations. “You always worry, as sort of the captain, that one of your great performers is not going to get recognised... but you still pray for them all,” he said. “They all put so much into it and they did it together, so it’s nice none of them got left out.” It is Adams’s fifth Oscar nomination - and her first in the leading actress category - having previously been nominated for her supporting roles in The Master (2012), The Fighter (2010), Doubt (2008) and Junebug (2005) however she has never collected a statuette to date. She will compete with Bullock, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine,
Dame Judi Dench for Philomena and Meryl Streep - who scored her 18th Oscar nomination - for August: Osage County. Dame Judi said: “This is just the loveliest news. I’m so happy for everybody involved, and so proud to have been part of the wonderful experience that Philomena has been.” The best actor category sees British stars Bale and Ejiofor up against Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey, who won a Golden Globe on Sunday for his performance in the Aids drama, said he was “honoured and grateful”. Britain’s Sally Hawkins is up for best supporting actress for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, alongside Lawrence, Nyong’o, Julia Roberts for August: Osage County and June Squibb for Nebraska.
MacFarlane killed Brian to teach lesson Starring Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong’o and Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave is in the running for 10 Baftas.
12 Years a Slave leads UK box office 12 YEARS a Slave has opened at the top of the UK box office, knocking fellow Oscar hopeful American Hustle into second place. Steve McQueen’s slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a man kidnapped and forced to work for a brutal slave master, played by Michael Fassbender. The film took £2.51 million over the weekend while American Hustle, starring Christian Bale,
Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence took £1.94 million. The new Hobbit film was in third place. The Desolation of Smaug, the second part of The Hobbit trilogy, took £1.5 million at the UK and Ireland box office in its fifth week of release. Disney’s latest hit animation Frozen was in fourth, taking £1.31 million. (BBC)
WHEN Seth MacFarlane decided it was time to temporarily kill off “Family Guy’s” dog, Brian, he was trying to teach a lesson. “It reminded people this is still a show where anything that can happen despite the fact it’s been on for awhile,” MacFarlane explained to TV critics at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. With that being the goal, MacFarlane considers the stunt a mission accomplished. But what he didn’t expect is for the viewers to teach him a lesson, too. When Brian, easily one of “Family Guy’s” best and most beloved characters, was hit by a car and couldn’t be revived, fans lost their minds. Mourning commenced, threats were made and petitions were launched in the name of bringing back the Griffin family’s dog - who, in a cruel twist, had already been replaced by another pooch named Vinnie.
Brian (left) is one of the main characters in the hit TV show.
The sustained outburst “surprised all of us,” MacFarlane said. “We were all very surprised, in a good way, that people still cared enough about that character to be that angry. We thought it would create a little bit of a stir, but the rage wasn’t
something we counted on.” In the end, it’s a lesson learned all around. “Family Guy” fans know that even the most revered characters may not be around forever, and MacFarlane knows that the dog has to stay. (CNN)

Science & Technology Kardashian may file police report against teen who claimed West hit him KIM Kardashian is mulling a counterstrike against the teenager who allegedly called her a “n---er lover” and accused her baby daddy of battery. The reality TV vixen says the 18-year-old threatened to “beat” her during a racist rant in a Beverly Hills medical building Monday, and that the aggressive behavior made her fear for her physical safety, a wellplaced source told the Daily News on Tuesday. Kardashian — whose famous fiancé, Kanye West, raced to her aid and allegedly punched the unidentified teen — has been talking with her lawyer and “investigating every option available,” the source said. “He threatened to hit her. He said, ‘I bet I could beat you,’” the source said, referring to the teenager. “She’s tiny, and if someone is following you screaming, ‘Slut! N--er lover! C--t,’ you don’t know if you’re dealing with an insane person who will go postal and hurt you,” the source said. “She was so upset, she was crying.” The source it was not yet clear whether Kardashian would follow up by filing her own police report. The brunette bombshell had not filed anything as of early Tuesday afternoon, a source in the Beverly Hills Police Department told The

News. Beverly Hills cops rushed to the scene of the alleged Monday melee about 12:15 p.m. and said the alleged victim and witnesses named West as the suspect in a misdemeanor battery. The teen reportedly dropped the N-word while referring to a group of paparazzi stalking Kardashian outside the Wilshire Boulevard chiropractor’s office and unleashed his bigoted blast on the former sex
tape siren when she scolded him for inappropriate language. “F--k you b--ch. Just trying to help. Shut up n----r lover, stupid slut,” he allegedly yelled, according to the source. At some point Kardashian connected with West on her cellphone, and the rapper overheard the vicious verbal assault and Kardashian’s panicked reaction, the source said.
Arctic Monkeys and Haim lead NME awards nominations ARCTIC Monkeys have topped this year’s NME Award nominations with eight nods, followed by Californian all-sister trio Haim, who have six. Arctic Monkeys, who topped the chart with their fifth album AM, are up for best British band and best album. They compete with Haim, who were the BBC’s Sound of 2013, in the best live band category. Punk band Pussy Riot are also nominated for “hero of the year” following their imprisonment in Russia. Two of the band’s members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were jailed in August 2012 after performing a protest song in Moscow’s main cathedral. Their release last month is also nominated in the NME’s “music moment of the year” category. Accordingly, Russian President Vladimir Putin is also shortlisted for “villain of the year” - putting him up against Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke and One Direction’s Harry

ASHLEE Simpson is preparing to walk down the aisle a second time! Jessica Simpson’s younger sister said yes to boyfriend Evan Ross’s proposal, she confirmed on Twitter Monday night. “My baby love and I are ENGAGED!!!” Simpson, 29, wrote. “Hallelujah Hawaii!!!” Ross, 25, who will appear in the upcoming “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” movies, also tweeted his excitement. “The love of my life said YES!!!!!!” He is also the son of legendary singer Diana Ross, with whom Simpson was seen getting close to at a party in August, after the
couple went public with their romance in July — according to People magazine. Ross has boldly declared that the “Pieces of Me” singer is “the one” for him. “I’m so in love, and we’ve got amazing things going on,” he told Yahoo Insider at the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” premiere in November. “We inspire each other.” Simpson is clearly inspired enough to plunge into another marriage. The singer was previously married to Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, with whom she has a 5-year-old son named Bronx Mowgli Wentz. (NYDailynews.com)

Science & Technology Three new planets found, and one orbits a ‘twin’ of our sun Lifting weights helps maintain muscle mass.
Weightlifting ‘cuts diabetes risk in women’
WOMEN who pump iron in the gym cut their risk of developing diabetes, say researchers. The findings come from a study that tracked the health of nearly 100,000 US nurses over a period of eight years. Lifting weights, doing pressups or similar resistance exercises to give the muscles a workout was linked with a lower risk of diabetes, the work in PLoS Medicine shows. Adults are already advised to do such exercise at least twice a week. The benefit seen in the study was on top of any gained from doing aerobic workouts that exercise the heart and lungs - something which adults are meant to do for at least 150 minutes a week. Women who engaged in at least 150 minutes a week of aerobic activity and at least an hour a week of muscle-strengthening activities had the most substantial risk reduction compared with inactive women. They cut their odds of developing type 2 diabetes by a third. Experts already know that regular
aerobic exercise, such as jogging, brisk walking or swimming, can help stave off type 2 diabetes. The latest work suggests adding resistance training to exercise regimes - something already recommended by the NHS - will give further protection. The Harvard Medical School researchers point out that their work is not perfect - it looked at only nurses who were mostly Caucasian and relied on the study participants reporting how much exercise they did rather than directly measuring it. But they say their findings chime with similar results they already have for men. They believe the explanation may be partly down to maintaining a greater muscle mass to act as a buffer against diabetes. Type 2 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body are unable to produce enough insulin, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly. Insulin enables the body to use sugar as energy and store any excess in the liver and muscle.
IT’S rare for astronomers to spot a planet in a star cluster. That’s partly why a cluster called Messier 67 is so special: We now know that it has three planets orbiting stars. Even more exciting: One these planets orbits a star called YBP1194 that is so similar to our sun that scientists call it a “solar twin.” The results are described in a study in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. A solar twin is similar to the sun in mass, temperature and chemical abundances. This particular star is the first solar twin found in a cluster that has a planet, astronomers say. The lack of planets found in star clusters before had been puzzling because, astronomers say, most stars are born in clusters. “These results demonstrate that planets can form and survive in a dense cluster environment, where strong interactions with other stars are supposed to be present,” said study co-authors Anna Brucalassi and Luca Pasquini in an e-mail. We won’t be visiting Messier 67, home to about 500 stars, anytime soon. It’s also a Milky Way resident, like us. But the cluster is about 2,500 light-years away from Earth, in the constellation Cancer. One light year is nearly 6 trillion miles. Open clusters such as this one are much more dense in terms of how close together stars are than the neighborhood of our sun, said Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who was not involved in the study. “It’s great to see progress made in finding planets in stellar environments different from our

local solar neighbourhood,” Seager said in an e-mail. Researchers used an instrument called HARPS, which is part of the European Southern Observatory’s 3.6-meter telescope, at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. Other instruments, located in a variety of international locations, provided data that supplemented these results. Scientists looked at 88 stars in the cluster for six years, checking for signs of planets. Specifically, they wanted to see whether the stars appeared to be moving toward and away from Earth, as this would indicate orbiting planets. This method of finding planets is called the radial velocity method. These observations suggest the presence of three planets in the cluster. Two of them orbit stars that resemble the sun and have at least 33% of the mass of Jupiter. It takes one of these planets seven days to orbit its host star (“YBP1194”), and the other one five days to orbit its
sun, which is called YBP1514. The third planet orbits a red giant star, called S364, which is more massive and more evolved than our sun. That planet is more massive than Jupiter and takes 122 days to go around its host star. These are not good candidates for habitable homes, however. Liquid water could not exist on any of these planets, astronomers say, because they are too close to their host stars. There are two main types of star clusters: Open clusters and globular clusters. When a single cloud of gas and dust forms a group of stars, that is an open cluster. Globular clusters, on the other hand, are larger groups of older stars, orbiting around a galaxy’s center. More than 1,000 planets have been identified outside our solar system; they are called “exoplanets.” But astronomers have not found any planets in globular clusters, and less than 10 in open clusters.
Brain blow leaves life-long dangers A MAJOR analysis of survivors shows injuries to the head can leave victims susceptible to early death even years later through impaired judgement. Those with a history of psychiatric disorders before the injury are most at risk of dying prematurely. The study, in JAMA Psychiatry, of 40 years of data on more than two million people, showed that overall a brain injury trebled the risk. Suicide and fatal injuries were among the commonest causes of early death. More than one million people in Europe are taken to hospital with a traumatic brain injury each year. The study, by researchers at the University of Oxford and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, looked at Swedish medical records
between 1969 and 2009. TREATABLE ILLNESSES They followed patients who survived the initial six-month danger period after injury. The data showed that without injury 0.2% of people were dying prematurely - before the age of 56. However, the premature-death rate was three-fold higher in patients who had previously suffered traumatic brain injury. In those who also had a psychiatric disorder the rate soared to 4%. Dr Seena Fazel, one of the researchers in Oxford, said: “There are these subgroups with really high rates, and these are potentially treatable illnesses, so this is something we can do something about.”
JUDGEMENT AFFECTED Common causes of premature death among those who had suffered previous brain injury included suicide, being a victim of assault or suffering fatal injuries, for example in a car crash. It is thought that the injury causes permanent damage to neural networks in the brain and can alter people’s judgement and ability to deal with new situations. Prof Huw Williams, the codirector of the centre for clinical neuropsychology research at the University of Exeter, said: “The mortality rates are like a reverseiceberg - they’re the most awful outcome, but the rates of depression and anxiety are huge in the brain injury population. “People with head injury need

monitoring all the time in case they become suicidal.” Dr Richard Greenwood, a consultant neurologist at Homerton Hospital in London, said post-
mortem examinations showed 2% of people had evidence of brain injury, and his children were not allowed to play rugby because of the risk to the brain. (BBC)

Sports Interational Trailblazers’ teams sound warning with exhibition wins TCI’s newest football club, Trailblazers FC made an impressive start to 2014 with two comfortable exhibition victories last weekend at the TCIFA Academy facility. According to a release Trailblazers FC are the only club in the country to possess both male and female teams as well as a youth programme; and although new to the scene they may be a force to be reckoned with during the domestic seasons. The Trailblazers FC men’s team defeated SWA Sharks 3-0 on Saturday afternoon with goals coming from Romain Small (2) and David Jasmine. The first half was a relatively even affair and
although Trailblazers had the greater share of possession they could not break down a resolute Sharks’ defence until Rodney Davilmar broke through on the right wing and put in a perfect cross for Small to tap in from close range. The second half was a more open affair as both teams played more attacking football. Sharks had some good chances and Jon Flanagan pulled off some excellent saves to keep a clean sheet for the Trailblazers. Small added a second goal as his fierce shot from long range went sailing into the top of the net, and with just a few minutes remaining a slick passing move saw Jasmine score from 10
yards. Team captain Davilmar was pleased with the result, but issued a warning to his players. “The win was well deserved, but we still gave away too many chances to Sharks, who had a few key players missing today. Sharks and the other teams will all be very competitive during the season, so we will need to be at our best if we are to stand a chance of success. However, at the moment morale is high and we are all excited about the upcoming games”. Sunday afternoon saw the Trailblazers FC female team take on a combined force of Strikers and Revolution players. Trailblazers FC strolled to a
comfortable 5-0 win with goals coming from Yarielca De La Cruz (2), Yarileny De La Cruz, Monae Gooden and Evnisha Saintverlu. The Trailblazers goalkeeper Marie Dorelus was rarely threatened as she was well protected by a well-organised defence of Shinaydine Pluviose, Alyssa Laing, Trincy Reid, Vanessa Joseph and Alande Rosima. With a strong attacking line including last year’s WFL MVP Kadine Delphin and top goalscorer Yarileny De La Cruz, Trailblazers threatened early on in the game and came close to scoring on several occasions. Griet Vanbrabant pulled off some scintillating saves for the combined team before Yarielca De La Cruz dribbled past two defenders and curled her left

footed shot into the bottom of the goal to give her team a 1-0 lead after the first half. Despite some resilient defending from Joan Whent and Melissa JeanGuy, the Trailblazers extended their lead when Yarielca De La Cruz scored from long range. Breaking Barriers: The Legendary Jackie Robinson PART II – CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK At first Robinson’s teammates don’t know how they feel about playing with him. But as they see the trouble he must face their feelings change. They make sure that players and fans understand that Jackie is not just a black man playing baseball—he is a Dodger. “Having Jackie on the team is strange, just like anything else that’s new,” says one of his teammate. “But if he can help us win, I’m all for him. That’s the only test.” As the season wears on, Robinson’s hitting improves and he gets to show off his greatest skill. Fans quickly discover that Jackie is the most exciting runner in baseball. As a former track star, he possesses blazing speed, but that’s only part of the story. “Being daring—that’s half my game,” he explains. When he gets on base, Robinson gives opposing pitchers fits. He dances off the base, challenging them to try and throw him out. If a pitcher tries to pick him off, Jackie scampers back to the base. Then he takes an even bigger lead, and the challenge begins again until the pitcher ignores him and he steals the base. As the months pass, Jackie gains respect. In spite of the pressures he faces, he has a brilliant season. He leads the league in stolen bases and is second in runs scored. The Dodgers won the pennant and Jackie is voted Rookie of the Year. Jackie’s career lasts ten years. During that time the Dodgers win six pennants and one World Series. In 1956 Jackie announces that he is retiring. “I’m glad my last season with the Dodgers was a good one. “Maybe I have another good season or two in me, but at 38 you never know, I’m glad I’m ending strong.”
and senior teams as well as an Under-5 programme has come a long way in just a few months. Hurdle went further: “Our goal is not to win trophies, although that would be nice, but we just want to provide people of all ages and abilities an opportunity to play football and other sports. Our emphasis is on fun, learning and enjoyment. We know that we have many talented young

Jackie Robinson had to wait until he was 28 years old to play in the major leagues. As a result his career statistics do not match those of most great ball players. Others scored more runs and won more pennants, but no one accomplished more than he did. In 1962 Jackie Robinson is honoured for his achievements on and off the playing field. He became the first black elected to the Hall of Fame.
HANK (Henry) Aaron (HOME RUN KING)
I remember well the year 1974. A new baseball season is beginning. No one seems to care about who will win the pennant. Fans want to know one thing: when will Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves (a black man) pass the legendary Babe Ruth to become the new homerun king of baseball? During his career Ruth smacked 714 round-trippers. People once though that record would last forever. But into the 1974 season “Hammerin Hank” has hit 713! No two people could be less alike than Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron. On the night of April 8, there were 53,775 fans in the stands. With Al Downing on the mound for L.A Dodgers, Aaron hit his 715th home run to become the new king. Actually he went on to end his career with 755 home runs and was eventually inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

YOUNG tennis players at the Graceway Sports Centre had the opportunity to learn tips from a top US professional tennis coach last Saturday (January 11). John Evert, brother of former World No 1 professional tennis player Chris Evert, and co-owner of Evert Tennis Academy took the time out of his first vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands to do what he loves best. At no cost, more than 35 children enrolled in the tennis programme at the Centre were given this unique opportunity. The youngsters, ages 7 - 17 were divided into two age groups and trained in two separate sessions by the Centre’s Tennis coach Reinaldo Garcia and Evert. Evert, who spent some time with each child said, “I love working with kids and certainly I can take a few hours out of my vacation to work with some kids.” By the end of the sessions the children left feeling more skilled and excited about the sport, while Evert
felt satisfied that his time was well spent. He said he felt their love for the game and commended them on being passionate, focused and polite. John Evert is the Founder and Managing Partner of the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida. He grew up in a tennis family under the training of his father and revered tennis coach Jimmy Evert. He and his four siblings all played professional tennis and competed and won National titles. Evert has managed top junior, collegiate and professional players and has been developing young talent through coaching for over 20 years. At the academy, he coached and developed Andy Roddick, Sebastien Grosjean, Tatiana Golovin and numerous National and NCAA Champions. In 2009 the United States Olympic Committee recognized Evert’s coaching achievements by naming him Developmental Coach of the Year.

Mills working on Williams’s speed – Training partner Blake has become good friend TCI born superstar sprinter Delano Williams is working with one of the best coaches in the world and he has “the Beast” as his training partner. Williams, who switched his allegiances to Great Britain last year because TCI is barred from competing at the Olympics, feels that training with the Racers Track Club has elevated his performance. The world junior 200M champion said that with the quality of runners at the ace Jamaican club, which includes the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt, former senior world champion Yohan “the Beast” Blake and Michael Frater among other big names, training there is nerveracking at times. “I feel intimidated by them [the athletes of Racers] because they have been in this business for a while; but I’m lifted to see the progress I’m been making during the past few months.” PROGRESSION The national 100M and 200M record holder said that Coach Glen Mills is working hard to fix a few flaws in his running so that he can cut down his time. “Coach Mills is working on my

EXCITEMENT The humble Williams, arguably the best sprinter that TCI has ever produced, is excited about his 2014
season. “I can’t wait for my season to open.” The Commonwealth Games and the European Championships are two of the most important events on his mind. He said he did a lot of pre-season work and is expecting to soon reap the benefits. NEW FRIENDS

Webb gives TCI green light to host internationals – All CFU and some CONCACAF possible
INTERNATIONAL football fever will soon hit the TCI, given that the president of CONCACAF Jeffrey
CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb (third from left), feels confident that the TCI government and the local football association can work together to host international games on our soil. TCI’s premier Dr. Rufus Ewing stands second from left with FIFA and CONCACAF executive member Sonia Bien-Aime (left) and President of the TCIFA Chris Bryan (right).
Webb has given his approval (with recommendations) for the TCIFA to host regional games in the near future. With our footballing wonder woman Sonia Bien-Aime making the call, Webb made a historic visit to the TCI earlier this month to assess its facility; and he was pleased with what he saw. A meeting with the Premier, joined by the Minister of Sports and footballing officials galvanised TCI’s readiness for big games. “President Webb is in full support of hosting tournaments here in TCI and the visit to our facility and the meeting with the government was to pretty much pledge his support and ensure that the government is also in support of the opportunities being made available to the country and the Football Association,” Bien-Aime pointed out. The General Secretary of the TCIFA, who holds executive membership positions in the regional body (CONCACAF) and parent
body (FIFA), said that the benefits from the games were numerous. “The opportunity to host regional competitions will not only raise the profile of the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association but also the Turks & Caicos Islands in general as it would benefit us greatly from an economic and social standpoint.” CFU WOMEN’S CARIBBEAN CUP FINAL The TCIFA will have to do some upgrading according to BienAime, including the “installation of bleachers and other minor details”.
