STUDIO PROJECTS

COMMUNITY ROWING BOATHOUSE

The sport of rowing does not typically involve many people who are not either directly involved with the sport or someone in it. Therefore, when posed with the challenge of designing a Community Rowing Boathouse, inspiration was drawn from the perception of rowing for participants in the sport vs. that of spectators of the sport. As a spectator, the perception of the sport is that of synchronized team members rowing their boats effortlessly and gliding delicately along a water’s surface. The other side of rowing is a rower’s viewpoint, which includes an understanding of the strength, rigor, and focus that the sport requires. The project explores the dual characteristics of rowing’s strength and delicacy.

The program is divided into two separate buildings to reinforce a spectator and participant’s different viewpoints. One building is more public and engages with civic spaces whilst the other building is its foil and exclusively houses the rowers, their equipment, and addresses a path to the water. The green space between both buildings leads to a public stepped amphitheater that allows for the viewing of boats going down to the water. The ramp cutting into the topography acts as a promenade and ceremonial walk for the rowers. Because the movement of rowing sculls from land to water with team members is an important part of rowers’ comradery, the design creates a space for both the athletes and the spectators to celebrate this ritual.

The courtyard space between the two buildings is an intermidiate public area between the knoxville riverfront and Blount Avenue. The building has a glass curtain wall to help identify itself as a public building along the site circulation path

The mian spline of circulation is a single loaded corridor, on both levels, that are open to one another.

Riverfront greenway relates back to blount avenue, directly. The space between the two buildings is meant to be activated by this connection.

SOBRO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Sobro, a district in downtown metropolitan area, is projected to become an urban neighborhood. The future plan for this area has begun with the design and construction of a convention center along the ‘Avenue of the Arts’, which is on 5th Avenue. The site between 5th and 4th Avenue below Peadody Street is the intended site for an Elementary School. The purpose of having a downtown elementary school is to create incentive for families to live closer to the city rather than occupy suburban areas. With the building of an elementary school, the city hopes to develop the area west of 4th Avenue into small businesses and urban residences.

The location of this elementary school is in the middle of the site where one alley way used to exist. The concept that drove the design was the idea that children, in their developmental ages, are sorting out and learning in two different scopes. One is the area in which they learn about themselves, and the other is where they begin to partake and discover the environment around them. The Sobro Elementary School proposal seeks to create spaces that the child can relate to him or herself in as well as partake in the environment around them.

Common Classroom Space

The design of the classroom is inspired by the shape and function of a butterfly or moth’s cocoon. The way that this particular object is strung from a tree and provides shelter for the caterpillar within it is reflective of how the school is an object floating above the site and provides a protection for the children. This concept of the cocoon was carried out in the plan of the classroom by having a space in the class that could represent the secluded retreat that a cocoon provides.

Lofted Reading Area

The loft space in the room is carved out in plan to roughly reflect the shape of the cocoon. The loft is a space above the noise of the classroom where children can climb up and retreat to read. The cocoon is fashioned in a way to appear to have the ‘weaving’ of a cocoon but with light transparency which is provided by the frosted glass.

COMMUNITY CENTER HARLEM, NY

The topic of health in urban areas and its effect on different demographics was explored within the boundaries of Manhattan. The problem with large groups of people having consistently poor health is not only that it is negative for people and their families, but that it also begins to affect the larger community in which it resides. The proposed solution to Harlem’s health problems was a community center geared towards nutritional and physical well being. The location chosen is on a prominent street that has access to many living in east Harlem . The program is chosen to cater to typical as well as unfamiliar means of exercise in the neighborhood.

The two components of the program circle around nutritional and physical exercise. The ramp is a walking track that circles the building and interacts with the program as well as create a dialogue between activities in the interior and depicting that activeness through its perforated facade. The design seeks to create a space that relates to many age groups and encourages group and community engagement; all the while, promoting good health.

GALLERY AND ARTISTS’ LOFT GAY STREET

The program is designed to provide a living, working, and display space for artists in residence in a downtown area. This includes spaces such as a public gallery, apartment units, and art studio space. The site is currently a parking lot that is twenty feet below the Gay Street level. Using the confines of the site, the project allows the change in elevation to influence program location and the creation of a private courtyard for the bottom level of the gallery and artist living space. The organization of all the program around the outdoor courtyard allows for overlap of living, sharing, and working, allowing for the artists in residence to become more integrated into the community.

GROUP COMPETITIONS

A+A ENTRANCE PROPOSAL In Collaboration With: Rochelle Lo Angelike Angelopoulos Kenna Cajka Brian Lam

The MAXMIN competition is creating a tradition of challenging students to improve their everyday environment through a quick design exercise. The 2012 competition proposed a revamping and performance enhancement of the architecture building’s east entry. Currently, the ample amount of stairs connecting the exterior pedestrian walk to the architecture buildings’ ground floor simply functions as a means of entry and egress. Group 044 approached the design problem by diagraming the stair area and spaces relating to it. Connections were then drawn between the atrium’s occupiable green indoor space and campus’ outdoor Amphitheatre and pedestrian walkway, which also marries gathering spaces with natural elements. In keeping with the University’s growing outdoor spaces for students, the stair way is designed to merge hardscape and natural elements and draws inspiration from

the atrium and outdoor amphitheater. Texture, height, and other characteristics of the chosen vegetation were considered in order to create a smooth melding of hardscape and soft cape. One proposed use for this space is as an outdoor area to put art displays. This way, the space begins the reflect the character and interests of the student body inside the architecture building. The concept of converging natural and man-made textures in the east entry begins to create a more occupiable space for students as well as creates an opportunity for the space to be more activated and used to its fullest potential.

The units have preset space arrangements that can be utilized through the use of the interactive application. The exterior skin can be opened and closed through the application, giving occupants control over privacy, lighting, and exterior interaction. When completely unfolded, the exterior skin begins to interact with the street edge, providing benching for pedestrians.
