Letter from

Pastor

s I reflect on 20 years of pastoral ministry and 42 years of preaching ministry, I am still amazed to see what God has done with two people from the projects of Jersey City, NJ and the inner-city of Newark, NJ.

In the first year of our ministry, a minister’s wife who was worshipping with us at the time, gave me a prophetic word. She said, “Pastor Bailey, God is going to use you and bless you greatly but if you don’t get moved by the praise, neither will you get moved by the criticism.” I have often remembered those words because over the last 20 years we have had our share of both. Yet, God has been faithful to lead us, guide us, provide for us and sustain us. He alone deserves the glory for

all we have accomplished and all that we will accomplish together in the future. We still have a ways to go to fulfill the “high calling” of God upon our lives and ministry but 20 years is a good place to stop, smell the roses and rejoice for how far God has brought us. In the words of an old song: “We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord, trusting in His holy word, he’s never failed us.” As you review this journal reflect and celebrate with us, I pray that you also are encouraged to run your race and pursue the high calling that God has for you.

Meet the Baileys

Baileys Move Across the USA In 1986, the couple moved to Portland, Maine where they welcomed their first child, Chandler, in October. Their second child, Tyler was soon to follow in March of 1989 and Daniel not too far behind in June of 1990. While in Maine, Herbert founded the Maine Association of Black Professionals, after recognizing the need for the few professionals of color in the area to have an outlet to network, socialize, and develop meaningful business

relationships. Pastor Bailey began his adult ministerial career while in Maine serving as the Assistant Pastor at Williams Temple of Church of God In Christ. His devoted wife, Marcia served at his side as the church’s Pastors’ Aide Leader. In January 1992, the Baileys moved to Tulsa, OK after Pastor Bailey’s job in the insurance industry transferred him further south. It would be in Oklahoma that the Baileys would welcome their fourth child and only daughter, Kindra, in June 1992. While in Oklahoma, the Baileys attended Rhema Bible Church where they learned how to run a successful mega ministry in excellence.

From 1992 to 1995, the Baileys served as Assistant Pastors of Sanctuary Evangelistic Church under Apostles Milford and Evelyn Carter. The Baileys credit the Carters with nurturing them into the pastors they are today and exposing them to the structure and discipline it takes to manage a successful and thriving ministry. Pastor Marcia also served as the Director of Christian Education while at Evangelistic. In 1995, the insurance company for which Pastor Bailey was working in Oklahoma transferred him to South Carolina to manage a local office in Cayce. Pastor Bailey knew after hearing from God that there was a divine assignment to be completed once in the Palmetto State. Pastor Bailey and Pastor Marcia laid the foundation of Right Direction Christian Center by beginning a weekly bible study in their home from January 1996 to April 1996. It was on April 28,1996, Right Direction held its first worship service at the former Holiday Inn Express (now Super 8 Motel) on St. Andrews Road. Within five months, RDCC’s membership had expanded to 40 members. Later that September, RDCC began hosting its services in the Postal Workers Union Hall at 4921 Broad River Road, and the congregation continued to climb to nearly 60 members to accommodate their need for a more permanent facility, RDCC began leasing and relocated to 3801 River Drive in June 1998. A second Sunday morning service was instituted in February 1999 after attendance had grown to an average of 90 people. At that time, the sanctuary comfortably offered sufficient space for only 100 people, so when the congregation increased to 140 people, Pastor Bailey personally spearheaded the effort to renovate the facility’s warehouse to construct a new sanctuary. That renovation would prove effective, as only 16 months later, RDCC would have to add a 3rd Sunday morning service to accommodate the then Sunday attendance of 300 people. Within six months, Sunday attendance grew to 400 people. With a congregation now of 2,500+ receiving the Word in ten weekly services across South Carolina, and a multimedia outreach impacting tens of thousands across the world, Right Direction Church International is on the move…and the best is yet to come.

Pastor Chandler and Audria Pastor Chandler, the oldest of the Baileys’ children, married his high school sweetheart, Audria. They are alumni of North Greenville University (NGU). Pastor Chandler and Audria are dedicated servants of RDCI’s EPIC Student Ministry. Both eager to further their educations, Pastor Chandler is currently pursuing his Masters in Christian Leadership at NGU, and Audria is a pursuing a degree in Psychology at Columbia College. They are raising up two Rightly Directed children, Aleina (6) and Chandler Righteous (5).

Did you know? Tyler o Tyler had a part-time job in college in an art museum feeding his love for creative arts developed early on during his elementary and middle school art classes. Allyce o Allyce’s first job was as a carhop at Sonic. She bought her first car with the tips she earned.

Daniel was a fouryear starter for Queen’s University’s basketball team and went on to play professional basketball overseas, dominating in his league leading his team to a championship in 2015. He has led teams in Germany, Japan, and most recently Finland. His soon-to-be bride is a proud alumna of South Carolina’s flagship school, the University of South Carolina, and is currently a leading management assistant/sales representative with a Fortune 500 company in Atlanta, GA. Brianna o Brianna is a 2-time winner of the infamous Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York!

Kindra God knew the Baileys were missing “something” and sent one final addition in the form of Kindra Mone`! Kindra is the Baileys’ youngest child and only daughter. Kindra was a four-year starter for Coastal Carolina University’s volleyball team. Desiring a more non-traditional career that capitalized on her natural, God-given talents, Kindra relocated to the “City that Never Sleeps,” New York City. While in New York, Kindra has worked with prominent fashion designers and for notable blogs and websites such as Kate Spade, Everything Girls Love, and Cosmopolitan Magazine. She is the Editor-in-Chief of StylingSoul.com, as well as Co-Founder of Peek-a-Boo Pretty Girl, a fashionable non-profit started to ensure that all women are equipped with the tangible and intangible tools to look and feel their best.

Did you know? Chandler o Pastor Chandler was a very talented soccer player in his early years and played competitively. Audria o Audria appeared in a Quincy’s restaurant commercial when she was 5yrs old.

Did you know? Kindra o Kindra briefly lived in China while on a volleyball tour. o She also interviewed Oprah at a red carpet movie premiere.

he Bible encourages us to train up a child in the way they should go so that when they are old, they will not depart from it. Webster defines a child as a young person especially between infancy and youth. Once they are a youth, what happens to the training? That’s where the youth ministry comes in to continue to reiterate and emphasize those things they’ve been trained in as a child. Right Direction Church International’s Youth Ministry began in 1997 by Pastor Herbert Bailey. In 1999 it was turned over to Youth Pastors Dwayne and Denise White under a new name:

We were able to interview Pastor Dwayne White (Currently Campus Pastor of Right Direction Church International’s Florence Campus) 1) How long have you attended RDCI? I have been a member of RDCI since April 1999. 2) What was it like being called to pastor teenagers? What were your initial thoughts to be given such a task?

Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 24

Being called to pastor teens is a big responsibility and one my wife and I didn’t take lightly. There was a sense of weightiness on the position for us because we were responsible for shaping how young people experience God during their most developmental time in life. This was the period before adulthood when individuals decided whether they are going to be a Christian or not, so our thoughts were go big or go home.

We were also able to talk with some of the young adults who grew up in RAYG at RDCI:

calling. The love we have for people and ministry started in youth ministry.

Jeremy Harriot: (Member of RDCI for 18 years, Digital Media Specialist, Media Volunteer, Student Specialist and Technical Support Team Volunteer)

Angellica J. Absolutely! Youth ministry is where I developed a passion for worship and serving in the ministry. Being a part of RAYG at the time as a student gave me confidence, allowed spiritual growth at my level, and built long lasting friendships.

Rahshawn Merrick: (Member of RDCI for 19 years, EPIC Student Ministries Columbia Coordinator & Worship Leader) Ashley Merrick: (Member of RDCI for 15 years, EPIC Student Ministries Columbia Coordinator) Angellica Jenkins: (Member of RDCI for 14 years, EPIC Student Specialist, Assistant Coordinator of EPIC’S Creative Arts Department, Assistant Praise and Worship leader for ESW, Praise Team Florence Campus) 1) Do you think the youth ministry had an impact on your life as a teenager and where you are now? Jeremy H. I’m absolutely sure that if it weren’t for youth ministry I wouldn’t be the same type of person that I am today. Youth ministry gave me the opportunity to try things and experiment with different talents and abilities that I might not have known I would have had otherwise. My love of music, computers, technology, design and video production were all things encouraged and fostered by my involvement in youth ministry. Today my career is rooted in those talents and interests.

2) What is one piece of advice from your experience with the youth group that you would share with a teen participating in youth ministry now? Jeremy H. The one thing that I always try to stress to students is that the ability to stand out early in life is one of the greatest qualities someone can possess. Someone who knows where they’re going and can set goals and reach them as a teenager is already way ahead of the game. Also, broaden your horizons as much as possible. The ability to relate and converse in the areas of arts, science and culture on a superior level is one of the greatest assets to have in your arsenal. Rahshawn & Ashley M. - Get involved and stay involved! Who you hang around is who you are most likely to become. Angellica J. Serve and learn all you can. Pull on your youth pastor and specialists and gain as much knowledge and wisdom. Learn to fall in love with God now, pressing deeper into praise and worship. When you serve in your student ministry you begin to see your God-given skills and ability and grow in that area.

Rahshawn & Ashley M Yes! As a teenager I learned to trust God and use my faith. Learning God’s principles early definitely helped in adulthood. It has also pushed us into our destiny and

THE TRANSITION: By D’Jaris L. Jenkins

I

n the latter part of 2013, Chandler Bailey, the oldest son of Drs. Herbert and Marcia Bailey, was appointed as the new youth pastor for the teen ministry after Pastors White made the transition as campus pastors of the Florence Campus. On New Year’s Eve of 2013, the youth ministry changed its name to EPIC Student Ministries. EPIC stands for “Experiencing Power in Christ.” EPIC’s mission is to empower high school students through the teaching of faith principles by creating epic moments relevant to high school students and teen culture. Since the transition, EPIC has continued to thrive and excel and make great impact in the lives of teenagers across the community with its ongoing services, programs, events and initiatives.

Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 26 Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 26

We had a chance to interview Pastor Chandler Bailey: 1) Do you think the youth ministry had an impact on your life as a teenager and where you are now? Definitely, without a doubt. Youth ministry had a big impact on my life and my world, even now. The Bible says to train up a child and when they grow up they won’t depart from it. We’ve heard the slogan, and it’s not scriptural, but “it takes a village to raise a child.” Having that constant reinforcement is good. The parents plant the seed by modeling the lifestyle and then when you become a part of a youth ministry, you hear other teens, even though they’re not perfect, listening to the

as a pastor. I embraced the divinity of pastor, meeting those measures with a help of the Holy Spirit. It was a big shift for me. 3) What is one thing you want teenagers to walk away with once they transition out of youth ministry? Our youth ministry is a faith standard. EPIC means experiencing power in Christ. I want them to have a God encounter that rocked them the way it rocked me. No matter what you do, when you hit the face of God you know God exists for the rest of your life. Not just the love of God, but the experience with God. Those things are remembered for the rest of your life. I remember a

I know what it is to be a pastor because my parents are pastors. You need the help of the Holy Spirit. I associate pastor with the word shepherd and I envision someone with a staff to guide and correct, lead and protect teens and ward off snakes and wolves.

word of God and praising and worshipping. It creates a sense of community and it makes God more relevant. It’s something to remind you of what it’s supposed to be like. Youth Ministry showed me what the real culture was and that was the biggest blessing to me. 2) What was it like being called to pastor teenagers? What were your initial thoughts to be given such a task? Because my parents walked out the roles of pastors so well, I felt convicted to live up to the standards of the call. God gave shepherds a big hard stick for warfare. During times when the wolf would show up in teenagers’ lives, I would switch to a different mode, this serious person. Later in 2013 I switched my direction to operate more

youth camp experience in Canada when God punched me in the gut and I fell over and felt overwhelmed by the love of God. The glory of God was heavy on me and I couldn’t even stand up. It’s not really the sermons I want them to remember, but that they experience the power in Christ. I want them to associate God with that type of heavy anointing and spirituality that they are left experiencing the power of God. I want them to know that God is so real and so evident and will literally shake them; and they’re in an environment of unconditional love.

BRIDGE ing the GAP: MINISTRY FOR OUR PRE-TEENS By Tamara Brown

Right Direction Church International’s BRIDGE ministry originated in 2000 and is currently under the leadership of Minister Carnell and Natasha Johnson. BRIDGE is a part of our Youth Ministry dedicated to middle school students. Our pre-teens attend middle schools all over the Columbia, Orangeburg, and Florence areas. BRIDGE stands for Building Responsible Individuals Demonstrating Godly Excellence. The purpose of the BRIDGE ministry is to, “Teach pre-teens to see themselves as God sees them. To define their true identity to Christ and prepare them to become leaders in the kingdom.” The mission of the BRIDGE ministry is aligned with the mission and vision of RDCI: To empower people to live successful lives through the teachings of faith principles that transform thinking and impact future generations.

Throughout the years, the BRIDGE Ministry has grown to over 25 middle school students attending Bible Study every Wednesday evening. Ministers Johnson teach students at their level of understanding as it applies to their home, school, social, and financial lives by giving them practical solutions on how to handle challenging situations that every pre-teen faces during their middle school years. In the BRIDGE ministry, we believe and teach that failure is NEVER an option, and that we win in every situation. The BRIDGE ministry covers topics during Wednesday evening Bible Study, such Celebrating Celebrating 20 20 Years Years of of Kingdom Kingdom Expansion Expansion || 28 28

as, how to handle and respond to parents & teachers, peer pressure as it relates to drugs, dating, bullying, pre-marital sex, and how to manage finances. These topics help to ensure that students understand Godly principles and know how and when to use them. Students are equipped with the tools to overcome every situation. The BRIDGE ministry uses every opportunity to teach God’s word to our middle schoolers with social events throughout the year. Over the years, BRIDGE has incorporated two fellowship socials

that are the ministry’s flagship events. These events are the annual King of My Heart Gala, which takes place in the month of February, and the CrossOver Ceremony which takes place in August at the beginning of every school year. The King of My Heart Gala is a social opportunity for students to celebrate Valentine’s Day without the pressures and concerns of dating. Students are encouraged to make God the King of their hearts and this is done in a way that allows students, both male and female, to attend a semi-formal event that celebrates God being at the center of their hearts and what it looks like to make God their Valentine, not another person (Exodus 20:5). During the King of my Heart Gala

students have the opportunity to have their pictures taken with their friends, fellowship with their peers and hear a heartfelt word from Minister Johnson. Every year students look forward to this event, and BRIDGE student specialists are excited to plan and serve for this very special event. The CrossOver Ceremony is an exceptional event that the BRIDGE ministry hosts every year in August when our 8th grade students enter high school and begin attending EPIC (the high school ministry). This ceremony is a pivotal milestone in our students’ lives and they are celebrated and congratulated on their academic accomplishments. During this ceremony, the BRIDGE ministry invites Dr. Bailey to be our keynote

speaker, Youth Pastor Chandler Bailey and an EPIC Student Specialist give students and their parents a brief overview of what EPIC is and what the students and parents should expect as they enter into EPIC as a high school student. In addition to introducing the new high school students to EPIC, the CrossOver Ceremony also serves as an introduction to the new middle school students who will cross over from Right Direction’s Children’s Church to the BRIDGE Ministry. We use this time to introduce the new students to Ministers Johnson and the BRIDGE Student Specialists. Every year The BRIDGE ministry looks forward to seeing students grow and mature to the next level and is eager to meet and help guide incoming students as they transition from elementary to middle school. The BRIDGE ministry is excited to celebrate Right Direction Church International’s 20th Anniversary. In the years to come, the BRIDGE ministry looks forward to hosting a variety of outreach events within the surrounding communities and partnering with local middle schools to help expand and fulfill the vision of the ministry, which is an extension of our pastors. The BRIDGE ministry looks forward to incorporating monthly outings, student-teacher mentorships, and a host of other fellowship socials throughout the year that reinforce Godly principles, allows us to correct and celebrate our students and give them an opportunity to socialize and fellowship with other middle school students who want to develop and maintain a relationship with Jesus Christ.

According to a survey by Southern Nazarene University, by age 14 a shocking 85% of Americans will have made a decision whether or not to become Christians. Just as the successful future of any organization lies in succession planning and dedication to training and mentoring others to take over the company, so does the future of the Christian church lie in training and mentoring children to influence their generation towards Christ. Right Direction Church International’s Children’s Ministry has strategically aligned itself to fulfill this call of equipping future leaders through practical application of the Word of God. From the inception of RDCI in 1996, Pastors Bailey had a passion to meet the needs of families. However, assuring that biblical instruction for the children was given on the children’s level of understanding was especially significant. To meet this challenge, the Children’s Ministry was established basing its mission on Deuteronomy 11:18–19, “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of

mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” (New Living Translation). Beginning meagerly, the Children’s Ministry, with about eight children (four of which were the Pastors’ children), met during services in a corner of the hallway outside of the rented conference room where Sunday services were held. Initially supervised by Pastor Marcia, the volunteers did not despise their small beginnings, but instead created an exciting environment

for the children. They made the most of their small space by hanging posters, displaying crafts and creating a play space, all while sharing the love of God. By 1999, the number of children attending service increased so much that it was necessary to separate the teenagers into their own group, led by Pastor Dwayne White. Minister Joyce Brown, who has served as the Children’s Ministry Leader for fifteen years, has seen many milestones in the Children’s Ministry. For example, in 1999, Hallelujah Night was created as an alternative community event to Halloween. Children were encouraged to demonstrate their talents in the first Children’s Christmas Production in 2001. The Back 2 School Bash, an annual outdoor carnival where school supplies are distributed to the community, was launched in 2002. The Children’s Ministry participated in its first large community-wide evangelism outreach in 2003 entitled Kid’s Kamp. This featured a partnership with the Church of the Nazarene and other neighboring churches. But one of the most prevalent milestones occurred in October 2015. RDCI opened a $2 million dollar facility solely dedicated to children— Kid’s Town. This state-of-the-art wonderland features indoor and outdoor playgrounds, game rooms, multiple classrooms and an auditorium with theatrical staging, lighting and sound.

To promote diversified learning, teachers and volunteers share a multiplicity of educational backgrounds and knowledge. But beyond teacher certification, academic training or experience, the staff’s greatest skills are seen in their enthusiasm for learning, their desire to lend a hand, and their availability during times of need. Listening and communicating with children, family and other workers contribute to this positive experience. Minister Brown stresses, “We are diligent and serious about ministering to our children, so our volunteers devote a maximum investment of time, energy, and effort. [Children] will do better

if they know better—and are taught to do better.” Thus, the Children’s Ministry inaugurated the Orange curriculum in February 2016, which offers a smorgasbord of resources for grades 1–5. The exciting thing about this new curriculum is that it not only presents biblical stories, but biblical application. Students learn how to apply the wisdom of God when dealing with real-life issues such as anger, cooperation, peer pressure, etc. Monthly themes are applied through interactive games, role playing and visual aids. It’s not just lecture based material. Additionally, this new curriculum provides options for sharing object lessons with parents through social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook. The RDCI Children’s Ministry strives to set its children up for success in life by encouraging them to be “game changers” who will become leaders, not only within the confines of church, but within their communities as well. This is increasingly evident to parents, who are noticing incredible growth in their children when regularly attending the services. Many students have

risen to the top of their classes in academics; while others have excelled as leaders in sports and other social activities. Some are budding entrepreneurs and others have become fierce in sharing their faith in Christ. Some parents even boast of improvements in behavior, cognitive ability, and confidence since their children have maintained consistent attendance. Pastor Bailey consistently affirms that it is worth the sacrifice for parents to bring their little ones to Children’s Church and parent testimonials confirm this truth. In the near future, the Children’s Ministry has goals of cultivating leadership skills through volunteer training to accommodate the increasing number of students. Secondly, an augmented community evangelism effort is desired. It is a challenging responsibility to have a hand in steering those eighty-five percent of young Americans toward new productive lives in Christ, but RDCI’s Children’s Ministry is up for the challenge.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 New International Version (NIV) Outreach is defined as a non-traditional gateway to providing adequate services and proper access to those services by meeting the needs of people in a mobile, non stationary manner. Outreach is not only confronting the needs of people as many believe, but it directly seeks after those in need who may not otherwise have access to services and resources that could ultimately benefit them. through its outreach efforts. Outreach efforts provide the opportunity to reach out past the four walls of the church and extend the love of God to those who are in need. Recognizing and assessing the needs of the surrounding community and strategically implementing plans of assistance is what makes RDCI’s outreach efforts so unique and effective. Throughout the years RDCI has established several outreach ministries that aid in meeting one of the church’s primary goals, to share the Word where it is rare and precious. The Direction for Life television broadcast, which launched in 2003, airs weekly throughout SC and via streaming internet. Thousands of followers have become committed partners based on this integral part of RDCI’s outreach efforts. Through the broadcast viewers are also able

The Prison Ministry volunteers serve enthusiastically and tirelessly to fulfill its mission: To preach and teach the uncompromising Word of God. To encourage men, women and youth who are in bonds, so that the Word of God may bring about a change that will affect their lives forever. In 2015, 973 people rededicated their lives back to Christ and 831 souls were saved through weekly visits and continuous ministry outreach efforts. In the last several years, RDCI has narrowed its focused to increase its evangelism efforts and do as the scripture commands, “Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all” (Mark 16:15). Those who love God and are called according to His purpose desire the entire world to come in to the knowledge of Jesus Christ and be afforded the opportunity to make Him Lord of their lives. That is the heart of the Evangelist. That is the heart Right Direction Church International’s Evangelism Ministry, also known as team REACH (Radically Evangelizing Anointing Changing Hearts). Food, water, toiletries, diapers, wipes and other essentials were provided to those affected in the community. As Right Direction continues to grow and expand, so will the reach of its outreach efforts and the lives that will be impacted and touched will be innumerable. When the local church demonstrates passion, purpose and a commitment to serve, it is a sincere example of how to reach people at all levels in life just as Jesus Christ did. Dr. Herbert Bailey states, “It was life-changing on so many levels. We saw the extent of poverty up close versus on TV.” On the second trip to Nigeria, in Abak, members saw how the children of a Nigerian orphanage slept on floors and their hearts were moved. When they returned home the church purchased floor mats for the entire orphanage for $3,000. That action was the start of the church supporting monthly missions in Africa, which it has done since that time. “Let my heart be broken with the things that break God’s heart.”-Bob Pierce

W

hat if you had a message that could change someone’s life for the better? It’s so powerful and impactful that you know you must do everything you can to tell as many people as possible about it. You tell one person, then they tell another, and they tell another. Before you know it, one word from you has changed the lives of hundreds, even thousands. So it has been with the international mission efforts of Right Direction Church International (RDCI) since 2002. It started with one trip and has expanded, and continues to expand, to repeated efforts to meet needs and spread the treasure of God’s word to those who will benefit from it the most. Having an international impact was never on the minds of Drs. Herbert and Marcia Bailey when they stepped out on faith to begin Right Direction Church International in 1996 (originally Right Direction Christian Center). Not only was being an international church not a part of the vision, but the idea of being a launch pad for several international missions efforts had not been conceived in their minds either. Drs. Bailey were so focused on having an impact in their local community that they did not see what God had in store for the church beyond the city limits of Columbia, SC. The realization that RDCI could have an international impact came in 2002 when Drs. Bailey took a team of people to Nigeria.

Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 46 Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 46

The very first international effort of RDCI was sponsoring a church member to go on a missions’ trip to the Dominican Republic. Since then, God has opened passageways for missions to other countries that include Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia and Kenya to get the people of these countries access to medical and dental services, education efforts, and the unadulterated word of God. Medical/Dental Missions Every other year a team of people, led by Dr. Damon Daniels of Wellspring Family Medicine, travels to Ghana, West Africa to provide medical and dental services to orphanages, schools and villages where people would not otherwise be able to see a doctor or dentist. The team has taken three trips so far, the last being in 2015. “Over three trips we saw 1,700 patients. We were able to treat a variety of medical problems that include malaria, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and a variety of infections,” says Dr. Daniels. People travel from all over and sit for hours waiting on the services of the medical and dental team. Many often suffer long-term from ailments and diseases that, in the United States, are easily treated with a dose of medication and proper care. Dr. Bailey states that “one of the measures that I often say we can determine the will of God is help.” Help is definitely present in Ghana through an evangelistic couple, Reverend Faithful and Mary Biney. The Bineys provide lodging, food, and transportation to help the team travel to, from, and within Ghana. They serve the team members by wholeheartedly empowering the team to cater to the needs of the people.

“The trips are mentally and physically demanding and require the team to be prayerful to minister to those attending the clinics. On many days the need can be overwhelming and emotionally draining.” says Dr. Daniels. The team members work long hours each day trying to service the hundreds that arrive for help. However, the team members are given one day to rest and enjoy the sites of Ghana before returning home. They are able to patronize the local markets where they can pick up native clothing, artwork, and other souvenirs; and they are able to visit the infamous Elmina Castle. Education Missions “Education is the key to a better life in my country. We are bringing hope to the children of Zambia through education.”Lusungu Sibande-Simwingi. The education mission efforts of RDCI began when Lusungu Sibande-Simwingi, a member of RDCI, heard Dr. Bailey talk about synergy. “We are stronger together than we are apart,” he said. She was compelled to discuss a partnership between the organization A to Zed and RDCI to provide education services to the people of Zambia. She’d been returning to her native country during the summers since 2003 and her sister, Kondiwani, had been encouraging her to invite others to come along. The need was so great that she could not meet it alone. Again, God provided “help” in the form of a partnership. As a result, a team of six people from RDCI travel every other year to help improve the quality of education for the children. The teams have had life-changing experiences. They are able to serve and to see God’s hand at work. They leave a positive impact on the people of Zambia through their service and their

donations. The people of Zambia have been impacted by the generosity and kindness of the team members and the knowledge and professional development that is provided to the educators are immeasurable. People continue to give items and money to fulfill the purpose of this mission. “I believe that we all were impacted by the love, acceptance and appreciation shown to us by the people of Zambia,” said Michelle Shackleford, an RDCI member who traveled with the education missions team. “It was truly a humbling experience that caused us to reflect on our approach to life as Christians and God’s representatives on the Earth.” So what is the future of the education missions? The sisters hope to work with the Minister of Education to provide professional development to more schools to ensure that the children are taught best practices and are encouraged to pursue higher education. We must be global Christians with a global vision because our God is a global God -John Scott There is no question that what began as a startup church hoping only to serve its community has been blessed to be a blessing to the nations. Kenya has opened its airwaves to RDCI through the Direction for Life TV broadcast. The missions in place will continue, while undoubtedly more will begin. When asked what he envisions for missions at RDCI in the future, Dr. Bailey stated, “I foresee us planting churches in Africa. I would also like to see us raise up missionaries from RDCI who do long-term missions in Africa.” RDCI will continue to spread the treasure of God’s word wherever God provides the help and the passageway to do so…one person at a time.

When I was 20 years old, I was a junior at Upsala College in East Orange, NJ majoring in Sociology. I was a young associate minister at a small church in Jersey City, NJ and itinerant minister, as my college and “home church” schedule permitted. I was not quite sure where my life would take me, but I knew that ministry would be a part of it. I knew this from the day I preached my initial (plagiarized) sermon at the age of 12.

THE

SACRIFICE &

THE

REWARD By Dr. Herbert Bailey

Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 58

Now, 34 years later, we are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Right Direction Church International - a ministry which is now impacting the world and has members from over 10 nations including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, The Dominican Republic, Jamaica and India. I would love to say, that I envisioned such an impactful ministry doing and being where we are in life and ministry as a child or even as a college student, but that wouldn’t be true. What is true is that God can and will use anyone who submits their life to him and allows Him to order their steps.

Our journey has not been a linear one. It has been one of hills and valleys, twists and turns, backward and forward. As I’ve written in previous anniversary articles, at times we felt like Moses on the backside of the desert, the children of Israel wandering in the wilderness and like David in an obscure place keeping his father’s sheep. Yet, God saw us, knew us, and called us by name. “We went through fire and through water: but [God] brought us out into a wealthy place” (Psalm 66:12). Like Abraham, we were called to leave our “kindred” in New Jersey and go to a land that the Lord would show us. First to Portland, Maine from 1986 – 1992. Secondly, Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1992-1995. Finally, to Columbia, South Carolina. When we arrived in SC in September 1995, we knew no one here, had no history here and (to our knowledge) no connections here. When I came here, I had no plans to stay. I thought this was just another stop on our ministry journey back to New Jersey, but the Lord said differently. Our four children grew up in SC without the comfort and convenience of close family members. There were no

grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. We had to watch from afar as our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, aged, declined and even passed away. However, 20 years later we can testify to God’s faithfulness to his word when Jesus said: “Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life” (Mark 10:29-30). God has blessed us more than we ever could have asked or thought with a church family that is committed to the Lord, committed to the vision and committed to us as their pastors and spiritual leaders. Our ministry now reaches the world by television, radio and the Internet and supports international missions. We are going “into all the world to preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15). On the personal side, our children were all able to matriculate through college and get their Bachelor’s degrees debt-free. Each are following their dreams and representing Christ in their various fields of endeavors, as a Youth Pastor, Attorney, Professional Basketball Player, and Public Relations professional in New York City. Two of our sons (three in July 2016) are married to “Southern Belles” and we have two “perfect” grandchildren, though we may be biased. God is fulfilling His word that says: “Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed. [3] They themselves will be wealthy, and their good deeds will last forever. …” (Psalm 112:2-3). Like Isaac, because we have obeyed God and stayed in our geographic assignment in South Carolina, God has given us the “hundredfold” blessing (Gen. 26:1214). We can take no credit for “this is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).

Though we have faced attacks against our church, our family and even our bodies over the last 20 years, as promised, God has delivered us “out of them all” (Psalm 34:19). We have “...the victory that overcomes the world...our faith” (I John 5:4). To walk and to live by faith never means that you will not face obstacles, challenges, or trials. Walking and living by faith means that you believe and trust God to propel you past every obstacle, take you through every challenge, and give you victory over every trial. We have discovered that “faith works, if you work it.” So, as I reflect over a score of ministry years, I can report that my good days have far outweighed the bad days, the ups have been greater than the downs, and the hills have far exceeded the valleys. Some have gotten on the bus, and some have gotten off the bus, but I am determined to do my job, which is to continue driving the bus. I’m reminded of the scripture that says: “...it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life-this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that

they take no time to brood over the past” (Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 - NLT). As we begin, the next 20 years of ministry, we look forward with great anticipation to even greater expansion of the kingdom of God through Right Direction Church International, Right Direction Ministries, and the Right Direction Fellowship. Our vision includes planting at least two additional church campuses and building a new brick & mortar sanctuary for at least 2,500. If during our first 20 years God has blessed us to grow a congregation of 3,000, graced us to plant three church campuses, expanded our reach to the world by TV, radio, and the world-wide web, increased us to sponsor mission efforts in South America, India, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, & Kenya, gave us over 60 acres of land and almost $15M in assets, we can only imagine what lies ahead for us. We “believe to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13). If Jesus delays his return, our future is looking brighter and brighter. Contrary to the overall state of the world, we are so encouraged as we see the future generations in our Children’s Ministry worshipping in the newly constructed “Kids Town” complex, “Bridge” (Middle School) Ministry, our “EPIC” (Teen/High School) Ministry and our “New Millennium” Young Adult Ministry. We have indeed become a “multi-generational” church. At the end of the next 20 years, I will be in my seventies but my successor, Pastor Chandler Bailey will be in his prime years of ministry. Though our journey may have been somewhat unorthodox and nonlinear, as I look back upon it I can say, “I am a blessed man, we are a blessed church, and the blessing will continue upon our children’s children.” The sacrifice has not been greater than the reward.

Lord told me early on that if I would do whatever I needed to do to participate and support them in their passions, they would support us when they were free to choose. This was easier said than done. This caused me to have very long nights or early mornings because all of my children participated in sports. It paid off later with college scholarships, but the process was very taxing. There were many late night drives back home on Saturday to be present and accounted for in my seat on Sunday mornings. Some of those mornings I would have only a few hours sleep because the tournament went longer than expected. It was necessary for a balanced life for our children. It required so much from me as a mother, but the reward far out weighed the sacrifice and I would do it all over again if I had to. These days our children are grown and pursuing their purpose and paths for their lives. As parents we couldn’t be more proud with who they have become or how they’ve handled and maneuvered in this kaleidoscope life called ministry.

Finally, as a wife whose husband just so happens to be a pastor, I learned that I could not compare my marriage to other non-ministry marriages. In the early days not only did my husband work a 9 to 5 and beyond, because of ministry he would leave work, come in and eat and sometimes go back out to serve and do ministry. Honestly, the early years were an emotional roller coaster ride. Ministry can be very demanding on a marriage if you look at it as an intrusion, an interruption or invasion in your marriage. I had to see the importance of my role as his wife. It had to be one of support and ministry to my husband as he ministered to the people. As wives, God has equipped us with the capacity to stretch to comfort and encourage our husbands when life and ministry require so much from them. For me, sometimes it meant being a little more understanding and not complaining or making sure the house was clean and dinner was ready when he returned home in the early days. These days some of those things don’t matter as much as they did then. Sometimes I cook and sometimes we go out to eat. What we’ve grown to realize is time we share at the dinner table, not who prepares the food, is more important to us. Life hasn’t always been a storybook, but I wouldn’t trade being Mrs. Herbert Bailey for anything in the world. As we celebrate our 20th year in ministry and reflect on the years, I now see that my perspective has changed as I grew and matured in my walk with the Lord. I now can see that God has prepared me from the foundations of the world to serve all of you as Co-pastor, First Lady, or Mrs. Bailey. It’s been an amazing ride and I can’t wait to see what the next 20 years will unfold and what I’ll experience from my perspective.

ORANGEBURG CAMPUS ARTICLE

O

rangeburg, South Carolina is a town located in the second largest county in the state, in a prime area between Charleston and Columbia on I-26, home to two historical black universities and in October 2006 the birthplace of the first expansion campus of Right Direction Church International. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 10 years since the Sunday evening services at

Joe Jeffords Highway. God has blessed the RDCI Orangeburg Campus to serve the Orangeburg and surrounding communities and make an indelible impact. But this is still just the beginning. Campus Pastors Trey and Katie Brave, appointed to the Orangeburg Campus in 2011, lead by example when it comes to “the servant’s heart,” running with the vision of Senior Pastors, Drs. Herbert and Marcia Bailey.

They draw strength from seeing people grow and get excited about learning the word of God. From awesome praise and worship to a dynamic word with an emphasis on practical biblical teaching, the Orangeburg Campus ministers to a diverse range of individuals. It is fully devoted to ministering to the community, hosting back to school drives, donating to local shelters and missions, hosting Vacation Bible

With Sunday morning services at 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday evening services at 7 p.m., soon the Orangeburg Campus will have to add additional services to accommodate those longing to “walk in freedom and whole life prosperity.” Church growth is promoted by inviting others to worship and to unlock the potential of who they are in Christ. Pastors Brave and the entire Orangeburg Campus congregation are excited about the direction of the ministry and eager to see the great works that God has planned for Orangeburg.

The RighT DiRecTion chuRch inTeRnaTional Right Direction Church International had long been planted in Columbia, South Carolina in April of 1996 by Drs. Herbert & Marcia Bailey when God revealed more of His plan for the expansion of His Kingdom. Drs. Bailey obeyed the voice of God to establish yet another church location which would lead them eastward to the county of Florence, SC. Beginning in October 2010, Drs. Bailey began to carry out this new assignment and Right Direction Church International Florence Campus became a reality. It was more than just a vision given to Dr. Bailey by God, rather it became evidence of obedience, faith at work and another opportunity to take the Word of God to locations where the Word was rare and precious. The first RDCI Florence Campus Sunday Service commenced in November 2010 at the Florence Civic Center ballroom at 6:00pm in the evening. From the humble beginnings of its first service to meeting in the Hilton

Florence CAMPUS

Garden Inn Grand Ballroom, to acquiring a permanent facility at 2540 Twin Church Road in Timmonsville, SC to its current location at 1507 West King Avenue, God has continued to show Himself strong and faithful to the Florence Campus. In May 2013, Pastors Dwayne and Denise White were appointed as campus pastors at the location and there has been continued growth and enthusiasm in the Florence area. “Since arriving we have witnessed nothing less than

synergy in motion,” Pastors White said. “Our campus has continued to grow and flourish and Drs. Bailey have encouraged us to use innovative ideas to help spread the vision of Right Direction to Florence and the surrounding community.” Connection to the community is a major aspect of the Florence Campus efforts. Each year the campus hosts Back to School Blasts, Kids’ Fun Day, Hallelujah Night and other events to foster a relationship with the

surrounding community. “We are a source of God’s love in the city, empowering everyone we come in contact with to walk in freedom and whole life prosperity,” Pastor White shared. “Now we are looking to build relationships with our local schools, reaching

the elderly in our neighborhood and advancing the Kingdom of God wherever we can. We provide the excellence in ministry that is on RDCI.” Excellence is a major ingredient of the culture of Right Direction wherever God leads. This is especially evident at the

Florence Campus. There is an excitement within the congregation at the Florence Campus. With ministries for children, youth and adults, there is something for the whole family to get involved in and be connected with. Elder David and

Timaly Bush, two of the Florence Campus’ first members, are encouraged to see the growth at the campus. “We are so excited about all that God is doing in the ‘Flo’. We are growing in every way together. Our membership is steadily increasing, we are growing spiritually and we are experiencing the power and presence of God in our services.” They continued, “Many of our

members are seeing the hand of God move in our personal lives through greater job promotions, deliverance, supernatural healing, debt cancelation, etc. RDCIFlorence is making a name in this area that will not be erased. We are so happy to be a part of all that God is doing through our Campus Pastors.”RDCI Florence Campus is continuing to change lives and bring a refreshing to the

area. With services on Sunday at 10:30 am and Tuesday at 7 pm, the campus is growing and discipling new congregants. As He is doing through the other Right Direction locations, God will continue to add, increase and work mighty works through the Florence Campus. There is great expectation and anticipation of what God will do.

KIDS TOWN

E

IMPACTING GENERATIONS By Kevin Felder

ach week hundreds of parents, just like my wife and I, have the privilege of escorting our children to Kid’s Town, Right Direction Church International’s state-of-the-art children’s facility. As Right Direction celebrates 20 years of Kingdom expansion, one must pause to acknowledge the indelible impact that is made each week on the lives of our youngest members and visitors—and Kid’s Town is a significant mile marker in that journey.

On Sunday, November 1, 2015, scores of people withstood intermittent drizzle to witness the ribbon-cutting of Kid’s Town. In the heart of Dr. Marcia Bailey for many years, Kid’s Town hosts children from 1st through 5th grade for bi-weekly worship, and is second-to-none in its detail, design, and decor. Dr. Herbert Bailey addressed the crowd, with co-pastor Dr. Marcia Bailey to his side. Then, with the help of 8-year-old Landon Varner, Dr. Herbert Bailey cut the velvet ribbon, to raucous cheers from the host of excited onlookers. The cheers were about more than just a new building being built; the cheers were about the prospect of what would be able to happen in that building—the raising up of a generation of God-fearing young people.

Celebrating 20 Years of Kingdom Expansion | 78

At the entrance of Kids Town is a bronze statue of a boy and girl sitting on park bench, reading a book. This is no coincidence, as education has always been a core value of RDCI. Walk through the front doors, and you are enveloped by a spacious foyer, with a video game center to your left, an indoor playground to your right, and a welcome center in front of you. Continue through the double doors flanked to the left and right, and you will withhold a breathtaking view—the Kids Town worship center. A stunning array of 3D fixtures on each wall are entrances to the Kids Town classrooms—Chandler’s Cafe, Mone’s Salon, Bailey’s Barber Shop, and Desmond and Nelson Books—making Kids Town literally look like a town! The stage and its mural are reminiscent of downtown

Columbia’s Finlay Park, complete with a real bridge, 3D trees, and downtown Columbia’s skyline. Kids Town’s design is deliberate, carefully crafted to make each young visitor feel like this is a place they can call their own. I took a few moments to speak about Kids Town with Children’s Ministry leader Minister Joyce Brown, who has been leader of Children’s Ministry since 1999. If there’s anyone who has witnessed the evolution of Children’s Ministry, it’s “Minister Joyce!” Minister Joyce, describe Kids Town in 5 words or less.

OOOMMMGGGG! Let’s see….Awesome, Funtastic, Spacious, and simply…Beautiful.

Amazing,

What has been the biggest difference you have seen in the way the kids worship/receive the Word since the transition into Kids Town? The biggest difference is their full, sincere, participation during praise & worship with the lifting of their hands and the lifting of their voice as they sing unto the Lord. The reception of the Word has gone up tremendously because of the beautiful, sanctuary style setup that causes them to focus on the Word of God. In your opinion, what are the two most amazing features of Kids Town? Just two? From a child’s perspective—1. Our very own state-of-the-art STAGE w/light show. I mean we have the “black lights, mood lights, flashing lights, spot lights”—It’s a technician’s dream. You must check out our praise & worship time!!! 2. The XBox/play room game areas. Where can you

go to play the latest XBox games AND get the Word in the same hour? From a teacher’s perspective—3. The classrooms are a dream come true. It gives us the space to separate the masses into smaller, more intimate groups so that we can dive deeper into the Word of God. The children love the breakout sessions. Are the kids more excited now that they are at Kids Town? A resounding YES!!!!! They are very excited to come to a place that was built just for them. The first couple of weeks, the volunteer team’s and children’s hearts were so full of emotions; we had to soak it all in. They didn’t want to do anything but

look and touch. We are moving now!!!! If a pastor of another church were to ask you if they should invest in a children’s facility like Kids Town at their own church, what would you tell them? I would tell them to not look at building a facility just for kids as an expense, but an investment. Children are not too young to know and appreciate the love and sacrifice shown to them. Think of the harvest of souls and the generations of believers going forth as a result of the investment. As you can see, Kids Town is more than just a building. It’s a place where my son and daughter, and all of our future leaders, innovators, and public servants are being shaped. The next time you hear your young one recite a Bible verse, or make a decision based upon the teaching they receive at Kids Town, thank God for—as Minister Joyce states— “God’s love made tangible through the vision of our pastors to build such a place.” Seeds are being planted in our young ones at Kids Town; time will tell the mighty harvest.

Dancers of Direction is a ministry comprised of volunteers who are called, committed and compelled to serve God through dance. It is the desire of God’s heart to have people who will humbly and sincerely worship Him not only with singing and musical instruments, but in the beautiful language of physical expression through our bodies. We believe that dance is good, acceptable, and perfect according to God’s will. “Let them Praise His name in the dance” (Psalm 149:3). Our mission is to usher in the presence of God and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in elevating praise and worship to higher levels through our movement. It is an honor and privilege to serve at Right Direction Church International under the leadership of Drs. Herbert and Marcia Bailey.
