Report Highlights – Q1 2010 Interactions between writers and their readers as well as amongst readers themselves directly contribute to increasing the popularity of ebook titles. English content continues to be the most popular language for ebooks. The combination of the four major English speaking countries–US, UK, Canada and Australia–contributed to 42% of total ebook consumption in Q1 2010, followed by Vietnamese (35%) and Indonesian (6%). Consuming ebooks on iPhones is gaining popularity in Japan and Spain. In this quarter, Japan and Spain have contributed 2% and 8% of ebook consumption on iPhones, compared to 0% and 3% respectively from Q4 2009. Java phones continue to be the most popular mobile devices for accessing ebooks in developing markets. Vietnam, Indonesia and South Africa together consumed 85% of ebooks using Java phones.

Social Networking The writer and user interactions are becoming an integral part of ebook consumption. In Q1 2010, in addition to reading, almost 40% of our users have interacted at least once with another member of the Wattpad community (leaving comments on stories, notes on message boards or by voting on a story). Users from English speaking countries interact more than any other country (80% vs. 20%).
The interactions among the users positively contribute to the viral effect of the popularity of stories and writers. One of the Wattpad users (aprilbrookshire) has accumulated over 3,000 fans in 3 months, and her stories have been read approximately 1.5 million in 3 months. The story “Dinner with a vampire. Did I mention I’m vegetarian�, the winner of the 2009 writing contest, has accumulated almost 2 million reads, 32,000 votes and 8,000 comments.

Ebook Consumption by Languages (1) English speaking countries continue to account for almost half of the ebook consumption in Q1, while Vietnamese represents 35% and Indonesian accounts for 6%
Among English speaking countries, US users consumed the most ebooks (67%), followed by the UK (14%), Australia (8%) and Canada (7%)

Ebook Consumption by Languages (2) In relative terms, users from English speaking countries tended to consume more ebooks online, than through mobile devices. In total, this demographic contributed to 58% of online ebooks consumption and only 31% of mobile ebooks consumption.

Mobile Devices Usage iPhones were the most popular device to consume ebooks with amongst English speaking countries. The US represents 58% of iphone usage, followed by the UK at 10%, Australia at 9% and Canada at 5%. iPhones and similar devices gained popularity in Japan and Spain during this quarter. Japan now represents 1% of iPhone usage in Q1 when there was very minimal in Q4 2009.
Java devices represented 64% of all mobile usage, whereas iPhones accounted for 30%, BlackBerry and Android phones represent 6% in total (chart not shown). Java devices were most popular in Asia. Methodology Every time a user accesses the site, Wattpad analyzes information available in that user’s request. From this, Wattpad determines device capabilities, geographic location, mobile operator and other information using open source tools and a variety of proprietary techniques. The result is a snapshot of ebook usage from subscribers of 600 mobile operators from 160 countries. We believe this data will be valuable for identifying and tracking trends, evaluating market readiness and more.
Limits of this Data Wattpad does not claim that this information will necessarily be representative of the ebook industry as a whole or of any particular region. The data is collected through Wattpad’s mobile application, website and mobile site. Because the data is collected from over 160 countries (excluding China), we feel the data is an important data point in analyzing global ebook usage.
