Tool, Die & Machining Expo 2014 – Educational Sessions Recap THE EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS provided a new opportunity for attendees to gather information for their business, while making new connections with TDMAW supporters. The free educational sessions were scheduled throughout the day and were well attended; below are a few recaps. Watch the pages of this Surgeons of Steel edition for full articles from other presenters. As always, think of our Partners and Sponsors first when looking for business resources. Their contact information is listed on the back, inside cover of each issue. Best Practices for Storing, Recycling and Disposing of Typical Waste Fluids and Solid Waste In Tool and Die Facilities Presented by: Paul Green and Shari Christofferson, Industrial Fluid Solutions and Industrial Waste Services This breakout session addressed the Wisconsin DNR guidelines for disposal of common tool and die shop oily waste, how to identify hazardous waste vs non-hazardous, and recommendations to create best practices to eliminate unnecessary costs associated with managing oily waste and non compliance. Special emphasis was given on managing coolant properly to reduce oily waste, such as when and how to recycle, managing tramp oil, and monitoring coolant health. Reaching Today’s Buyers Presented by: Bob Wendt, Cultivate Communications The decision to buy isn’t a moment; it’s a process. Nowadays, the average buyer does their due diligence before making a purchase. Buyers read up and research, ask around and read online reviews, and analyze their needs against key stats and facts. The result? This informed buyer has already made the decision whether or not to make a purchase, well before they even contact your company. Let us introduce you to marketing ideas developed with an understanding of how today’s
empowered buyers expect to experience your company. Learn what you need to know to increase revenue, sales and profitability with this new approach to marketing. Wisconsin’s Apprenticeship Program and How You May Use it to Develop Your Skilled Workforce Presented by: Bob Scheldroup, Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards Apprenticeships are back in vogue and there are resources available to help you help your company with skilled employees. Ken Heins, active TDMAW, member recapped the many ways to involve your company in the movement of apprenticeships and encourages all to take the risk, for the future of manufacturing. The Secret of Growing your business in Wisconsin and Around the World. Presenters: Mary Perry - Regional Account Manager; Mark Rhoda-Reis - International Business Director, Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Please do not keep this secret! Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation revealed what can seem like a well kept secret which is- There are people, programs and funding available to help companies and communities grow, around the world and in Wisconsin. Mary Perry spoke with TDMAW
members about the tools WEDC employs directly and through the hundreds of economic professionals and organizations around the state to help business expand and train workers; like tax credits, loans and training grants. Mark Rhoda-Reis provided statistics on the 35% increase year to date 2014 in the export of tool and die products from Wisconsin, and the multiple billions of dollars of these products being purchased globally. ExporTech(TM) is a C-Level, International Business Development Process that can help you strategically select your top international markets and accelerate your entry and expansion. Program graduates report an average of $600, 000 to $900,000 incremental revenue in 12 months. The Tool, Die and Machining industry is at the very front end of the manufacturing process and leads the growth curve for many of Wisconsin’s and the nation’s key manufacturing industries. If you do not export we invite you to talk with us to start. If you are already exporting or if your customers export, you are invited to join the Madison or Waukesha ExporTech(TM) sessions beginning December 9. Please share our secrets for your success with your customers, suppliers and your community leaders by contacting: Mary.Perry@ wedc.org, Mark.RhodaReis@wedc.org or visit http://www.inWisconsin.com.

Thank you to Waukesha Metal Products! TDMAW member, Waukesha Metal Products, opened the doors to their Grafton location, to a student tour on Wednesday, October 22. Twenty-one students from the School of Career and Technical Education, in Milwaukee, attended the tour along with their instructor, WI State Senator Paul Farrow, TDMAW Lobbyist Chet Gerlach, Eric Knight of Knight Public Affairs, Chip Beckford of Busch Precision and Laura Gustafson from TDMAW Headquarters. The students spent an hour touring the shop and were highly engaged. One student commented, “I don’t know how anyone could walk in to a place like this and not feel exhilarated. This is what I want to do! Waukesha Metal Products employees shared their personal career path stories and CEO Jeff Clark inspired and encouraged the students, stressing “where there’s a will, there’s a way. After the tour, Jeff Clark talked with the students about earning potential, apprenticeship opportunities and the variety of jobs available in the manufacturing industry, from the office to the shop floor. The TDMAW sincerely appreciates the time and effort that Waukesha Metal Products put into making this tour a great experience for all involved!

Dear IMC Founding Champions, We are thrilled to share that WCTC’s District Board has encouraged us to continue raising funds to support the construction of the Integrated Manufacturing Center. We will work diligently to raise the remaining funds by January 2015 in order to break ground by April 2015. WCTC needs a total of $4.5 million in cash commitments, of which $1.5 million is seeded by the College and $1 million has been committed by an anonymous donor if we raise the additional $2 million. We are very grateful to you for your financial support and advocacy for this project. We have raised approximately $1.4 million in cash and pledged support thus far. Our goal is within reach, although we need all hands on deck to ensure we can move forward with our building plans. As always, we appreciate any introductions to individuals or companies who may be able to help us achieve our goal. Given the extended timeline, we respectfully ask you to refer us to others who may be in a better position to give if able to make a commitment in January of the new fiscal year. We appreciate that the Fall 2014 deadline put many companies in a challenging position to support the project.
