Local Resident Creates One Big Family With Four Small Businesses in The Temple Mall

Robert Brandenburg IV opened on June 13th, 2014 in loving memory of his mother, Peggy Brandenburg, who passed away in December 2013. The goal was to create a place that as soon as you walk in, it feels like home: a safe place where all feel welcomed! Outside the shop is a Live Music Venue, Cutter’s Texas Music Stage, named in memory of his father, Cutter Brandenburg, who passed away in Jan 2015. Peggy’s current employees: Celeste Hernandez, Rachael Bundrant and Daniel Butler have been with Peggy’s since its first day and Marcella Nuernberg brought on shortly after. Peggy’s is best known for having over 50 varieties of flavors for hot, iced and frozen-blended coffee beverages, serving The World’s Strongest Coffee: Death Wish Coffee, and crafting a Harry Potter Inspired Butterbeer. Peggy’s drinks are also exclusively allowed into the Premiere Cinemas IMAX located next door.

already existed in the Temple Mall and a deal was struck to take over ownership in March 2017 along with Daniel Butler and Terry Smith. Rita Cruz, who was employed by the previous owners, remained employed and is still a part of the team. Candy & More has become a whimsical wonderland for children and adults alike having hundreds of new and/or vintage bulk and retail candy options as well as novelty gifts, plush, and Harry Potter merch most of which cannot be found anywhere else in Central Texas!

started as a small body jewelry kiosk called Mark Yourself in February 2010. In October 2011 Brandenburg transitioned from manager to owner and it became his first small business venture. Since then it has grown, becoming a full inline storefront in May 2016, adding pop culture and rock music clothing, accessories, and gifts as well as bringing to fruition Temple’s first and only licensed Body Piercing Studio. This all came to be as a result of a solid merging and partnership with Robert Thomas, who also assists with operations, and his wife Krystal who is Under My Skin’s certified piercer.

Big Top is Brandenburg’s newest addition, having opened in Nov 2018 following Auntie Anne’s departure. A partnership with Temple’s own Funnel Cake Lady, Kristina Rentz, has created an opportunity for fresh made from scratch pretzels along with other fun treats soon to come! Big Top hopes to bring a carnival themed atmosphere with its presence that will create a delicious must stop spot in the Temple Mall and has left many asking “What’s Next?” for Mr. Brandenburg. “It has been quite a journey over the past few years, seeing each of these businesses grow and develop, but also sync together as one cohesive unit becoming an exciting and fun destination for travelers, Bell County residents, and shoppers. I am an only child and having lost both my parents, I get to keep their love and legacy alive with Peggy’s Coffee House, but at the end of the day I have become a part of a new family: Daniel, Celeste, Rachael, Marci, Rob, Krystal, Terry, Rita, and Kristina; this is my family now.”

FINE JEWELERS INC.

Same Service, Same Quality, Same Family, Same Town Alfred Lastovica opened his doors in 1950, in downtown Temple with the help of his wife, Joan. Once the store was running smoothly, Joan returned to her career as a registered nurse. The Lastovicas were blessed with three sons and one daughter. The boys followed in Alfred Sr.’s footsteps. Johnny’s irst day at the store was the day after his graduation from Kilgore College in 1974, where he earned his degree as a Certi ied Horologist and Jewelry Repairman. Alfred literally handed his son the keys to the store, and left the next day for a much needed week long vacation! Johnny quickly learned how to manage Lastovica Jewelers. Billy came on board in 1981, after earning his B.B.A. at Sam Houston State University as well as a degree at Kilgore in 1981, where he mastered jewelry crafting and casting. Alfred Jr. is a GIA Certi ied Gemologist in Houston. When you visit the store, you’ll also meet Johnny’s wife Diane, and Billy’s wife, Helen. The Lastovicas are experts in assisting you in the selection of that special item.

Wes and Guy Coughran, father and son started Big Chew Chew’s in 2007 after working for McLane Food Service. They decided they wanted to open their own place making real old fashioned fresh burgers. For 12 years, Big Chew Chew’s has been making up fresh handmade patties every day, there are no frozen patties used here. They pride themselves on also making full size quarter pound burgers, no cheating! Guy has continued to run the business for the past two years after his father’s passing, and would like to thank his loyal customers for their business. Located at 8150 W. Adams Ave., in Temple Big Chew Chew’s has become a local favorite. Stop by Monday through Saturday 10:30am to 9pm and don’t forget to try one of their milkshakes or malts. There are over 50 flavors to choose from.

Lonesome Pine Nursery

In February of 2016, Sally ll Volney, l a retired d school-teacher, h l h had the chance to buy her favorite clothing boutique and she took it. Susan Marie’s of Salado has been in business as an upscale boutique since 1985. Turns out, running a business is pretty hard! Fortunately for Sally, she has a very faithful and business-minded daughter, Courtney Stewart, who stepped in to help. Along with Courtney, Alice Winders, a longtime employee of Susan Marie’s (23 years) and a close family-friend (she even sang at Courtney’s wedding 17 years ago!) is there to pamper the customers in the Susan Marie’s style to which they are accustomed. A true family-affair, Susan Marie’s is committed to the finest in customer-service, offering sought-after brands and ensuring Sally always gets her family-discount!

Susan Marie’s in Salado • 201 N. Main Street • 254-947-5239 Monday - Saturday 10am-5pm • Sundays 12pm to 4pm

Twenty four years ago Henry and Jeanette decided they were too old to manhandle cabinets anymore. With that decision, they handed over the custom-cabinetry business to their son, James, and opened Lonesome Pine Nursery on the same property. “People are much nicer buying plants! About four years ago, Henry “retired but still hangs out to keep Jeanette in line and share good-hearted jabs with the customers. Linda Neighbors, a customer since day one, quips “Henry charges extra for these weeds! Jeanette says, “We don’t have a business, we have one big family and that really is how it feels at Lonesome Pine. If you’re there for just one hanging-basket or a major project, you’ll likely find Henry ready to shoot the breeze, their dog Liberty ready for a little scratch behind her ears and Jeanette loving every minute of it! On June 9th they’ll be celebrating 51 years of marriage!

Dedicated to Serving Central Texas for 90 Years as the Owners of the Temple Daily Telegram Ninety years ago, Ward Mayborn and his son Frank arrived in Temple and bought the Telegram. The Mayborn commitment to journalistic integrity and community service continues as we celebrate nine decades of the family’s leadership in 2019. While Ward soon decided to pursue other opportunities, Frank, except for a volunteer tour of duty in WWII, made Temple his home, building and working for the betterment of Central Texas. Following Frank Mayborn’s death in 1987, his wife Sue, who had worked by his side at the newspaper for many years, assumed the roles of president, editor and publisher. For 90 years a Mayborn has headed up the Temple Daily Telegram. The Telegram and the Killeen Daily Herald are the only individually owned general circulation daily newspapers with local ownership remaining in Texas, according to the Texas Press Association. “We have a strong commitment to the communities we serve,” said Sue Mayborn, the Telegram’s editor and publisher. “We strive daily to bring you the news that is important to your daily lives. It is our job to present the information to you fairly and accurately.” There are 80 full- and part-time employees in the Telegram family, including a news department staff of 21 editors, reporters and photographers. The newspaper has expanded regional coverage through FME News Service – a joint initiative with the Killeen Daily Herald. The two newspapers also work together to produce Tex Appeal Magazine, a bi-monthly lifestyle publication that is delivered to the newspapers’ subscribers. Complimentary copies also are available at businesses throughout Bell County. The Telegram’s website, tdtnews.com, which averages nearly 180,000 unique visitors a month, features local news, sports and entertainment along with an electronic version of the print edition and more than 200,000 archived articles and photos available to subscribers. The Fort Hood Sentinel has been produced by the Telegram by contract with the U.S. Army for more than 70 years. The weekly newspaper is distributed to all on-post housing and hundreds of newsstands across the region.

Sue Mayborn President, Editor and Publisher

The Telegram also serves audiences and advertisers with niche publications, including TDT Homes Magazine and the Central Texas Community Guide, and event sponsorships (the Day for Women, Bell County Spelling Bee and the Bridal Expo). CentralTexasTickets.com, an online ticketing portal, was launched earlier this year as a way to help local organizations promote their events. “Freedom of the press is a precious and important protector of our democracy,” Mrs. Mayborn said. “Our job is to protect this freedom to the extent of our ability.”
