The Significance of Small Business Saturday

Kicking off the season of giving, was Small Business Saturday, an annual event that takes place on the Saturday following Thanksgiving—this year, it was on November 30. First observed in 2010 to support small businesses during tough economic times, it has since become a cherished day to show appreciation for the local businesses that are the backbone of our nation’s economy. By 2011, the Senate passed a resolution recognizing the day, and by 2012, all 50 states were participating.

Small Business Saturday is about more than shopping; it’s about reinvesting in our communities. A U.S. Chamber of Commerce poll found that 47% of consumers choose to shop locally because they value contributing to their community and supporting their neighbors’ success. Every dollar spent locally infuses money back into our city’s economy, fostering growth, improvements, and community pride.

The Power of Shopping Local

When you choose to spend money at local stores, you’re making an investment that matters. According to the Small Business Association, $68 of every $100 spent locally stays in the community, compared to $43 at national chains. Local businesses also contribute 250% more to local charities and causes than their larger counterparts. They sponsor events, support local nonprofits, and give back in ways that ripple through our community.

For many small businesses, holiday sales are a critical factor in their overall success for the year, accounting for up to 30% of their annual revenue. Shopping small

also offers a uniquely personal touch—whether it’s a customizable gift or a warm greeting from the family who owns the store, there’s something special about supporting businesses rooted in our community.

Holiday Shopping Trends in 2024

This year, shopping locally is more important than ever. According to NerdWallet's 2024 Holiday Shopping Report, 28% of holiday shoppers plan to prioritize small and local businesses. With holiday retail sales projected to grow by 4%-5%, the season continues to be a vital time for economic activity. Consumers are expected to spend an average of $890 on gifts, décor, and other holiday items, reflecting a modest increase over previous years.

Celebrating a Lifetime of Craftsmanship & Service

Temple Chamber of Commerce

In the heart of our community, there are individuals whose impact spans decades—whose dedication and service leave an indelible mark. On November 12, the Temple Chamber, Community Leaders State Representative Hugh Shine, Mayor Pro Tem Jessica Walker, Councilperson Mike Pilkington, and Community Member Hope Koch, met at Bob's Boot & Shoe Repair to surprise and honor one such individual: Mr. Robert “Bob” Gene Stone.

A Master of His Craft

For over 50 years, Bob Stone has been a cornerstone of our community, preserving the timeless art of boot and shoe repair. His workshop, Bob's Boot & Shoe Repair, has been more than a place of business; it has been a sanctuary for restoration and care, where craftsmanship and artistry blend seamlessly.

In an age of disposability, Bob’s work is a testament to the enduring value of quality and pride in what we own. From boots that have traversed the vast landscapes of Texas to shoes that carry the stories of their owners, Bob has poured his heart and skill into each stitch, polish, and repair.

Generations of families have trusted Bob with their footwear, and in doing so, they’ve found more than a craftsman—they’ve found a friend and a keeper of stories. His dedication to his craft has not only sustained his business but has also enriched the fabric of our community.

A Legacy of Service

Bob’s contributions extend far beyond his workshop. As a Vietnam Veteran, he answered the call to serve during one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history. His service is part of a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and resilience that inspires us all.

In addition to celebrating Bob’s remarkable career, we also had the privilege to honor his military service. In recognition of his dedication to our country, the Temple Chamber presented him with the Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin—a

symbol of our nation’s lasting gratitude.

This pin, rich in meaning, carries the following symbols:

• The Eagle represents courage and honor.

• The Blue Circle signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

• The Laurel Wreath symbolizes victory, integrity, and strength.

• The Stripes honor the American flag.

• The Stars represent our six allies in the Vietnam War: Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, and the United States.

• On the reverse is the inscription: “A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You,” a heartfelt reminder of our enduring appreciation.

A Grateful Community

Bob Stone’s life is a reflection of dedication, resilience, and integrity—values he has demonstrated in both his craft and his service. He has enriched our lives, not just by repairing boots and shoes but by reminding us of the value of care, restoration, and commitment.

As we celebrate Bob’s incredible achievements and retirement, we thank him for the legacy he has built and the example he continues to set. His story inspires us all to approach our own lives with the same level of dedication and pride.

Enjoy your retirement, Bob—a craftsman, a veteran, and a true pillar of our community!

Behind the Badge and Beyond the Fire: LT Public Safety Day

On the morning of November 13th, the Leadership Temple cohort, dressed in blue shirts and armed with coffee, boarded the bus for public safety day, eager to explore the inner workings of our local fire and police departments. The day promised a glimpse into the dedication and challenges faced by those who protect and serve our community daily.

With a hiss and a clunk, the bus pulled up to Fire Station 8 on Airport Road. Fire Chief Mitch Randles explained that the Fire Department receives an average of 43 calls daily. Only 2% of these calls involve fires, while EMS/Rescue represents 56% of the call volume.

The department has 130 personnel, including chiefs, captains, drivers, firefighters, and administrative staff. While equipment is expensive, our local department has been proactive in obtaining the resources and tools they need to face any potential challenge.

The knowledgeable Fire Department team showed off their top-notch facilities by leading our group through various hands-on activities. Rotating through stations, we climbed 75 feet in the air on a ladder truck, rappelled off the side of a building, used the “jaws of life” to destroy an unsuspecting Ford Ranger, and even participated in a relay race to extinguish a controlled fire.

The second half of the day began with a presentation by Police Chief Shawn

Reynolds, who shared how the Temple Police Department is reimagining policing through innovation and community engagement. He proudly announced that after raising starting salaries, only four vacancies remain across the department.

At the training facilities, the SWAT team provided an up-close look at the tools and tactics they use in high-risk operations. From 40-pound rifle-proof shields to nonlethal munitions, like bean bags and oversized Nerf-style bullets, we handled the gear and even participated in target practice on the range.

Many say that dogs are man's best friend; but Zico, the Temple Police Department's most experienced K9, could quickly become man’s worst nightmare.

We watched in awe as Zico sniffed out drugs and apprehended a “suspect” with his lock-tight bite. Nearing retirement after six years of service, Zico enjoyed a few well-earned pets and scratches from the last Leadership Temple group he will meet.

The now familiar hiss and clunk of the bus signaled our return to the Chamber building. With tired legs and an elevated appreciation for public safety, we went our separate ways.

Reflecting on the day, a quote from Arnold Schwarzenegger comes to mind: “Government's first duty and highest obligation is public safety.” Chiefs Randles and Reynolds, along with their teams, exemplify this commitment.

Throughout the day, the Leadership Temple Team learned about the variables necessary to meet such a charge. Led by Chiefs who are grounded in the development of management, the skills of their teams, and a vision for growth, the departments are thriving. Their continued success relies on continued support and input from local leaders and citizens, ensuring these visions align with the needs of the Temple community.

Chamber Ambassador Spotlight: James Nickerson

Bobbie Jo Young, Temple Chamber of Commerce

James Nickerson is a valued ambassador for the Temple Chamber of Commerce. Known for his tall, stoic presence and dry sense of humor, he makes a strong impression at ribbon-cutting events and community gatherings.

One of his fun, standout qualities is his knack for cracking jokes with a straight face; however, it’s his dedication to helping veterans that truly sets him apart.

James’s passion lies in helping veterans. A retired Master Sergeant, he served over 21 years in the U.S. Army, including 13 deployments. He was part of the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), the Army’s only special operations aviation unit, where he honed his skills in a high-pressure environment. After retiring, he turned his focus to helping veterans transition to civilian life.

Today, James works as a Veteran Employer Liaison with the Texas Veterans Commission. Based at Workforce Solutions of Central Texas in Temple, he connects veterans with employers by organizing job fairs and creating hiring programs.

He uses innovative approaches and clear communication to ensure veterans find opportunities that match their skills. His work supports the Texas Veterans Commission’s mission to give veterans the respect and opportunities they have earned.

Outside of work, James is a devoted husband and father. He has been married to his wife, Guadalupe, for nine years, and they have two children. When he’s not helping veterans or attending Chamber events, he enjoys going to Houston Texans football games, hitting the gym, and hog hunting.

James’s quiet, commanding demeanor and steadfast dedication speak volumes about his commitment to the community and its members, while also keeping his fellow Ambassadors entertained and on their toes.

James Nickerson’s dedication to both veterans and the Temple community makes him a true asset. His leadership, compassion, and commitment to service inspire those around him and highlight the impact one person can have when they focus on making a difference.
