PROGRAM HISTORY Since its inception, the Arts Administration program has been able to draw on the resources of one of the world’s greatest universities, and is uniquely positioned to offer its students access to the current ideas and vital coursework that connect to the field. At the same time, its legacy and leadership assure that students are learning about the arts’ most compelling and timeless issues, not just short-term trends. In 1980, the Program in Arts Administration was created at Columbia’s School of the Arts, and established the interdisciplinary mix of business and law that continues to be integral to the core curriculum. In 1991, the program was expanded at Teachers College to include education and arts education. With close to three decades of experience training students from all over the world, the program boasts a talented international community of: policy makers, funders, museum directors, festival coordinators, film producers, marketing and development directors, heads of finance, and education and artist entrepreneurs.

STUDENT PROFILE The program attracts a diverse and intellectual study body from around the world that has reached a good professional level, yet strives to reach higher. Although most students work parttime and classes are arranged to permit flexibility, a full-time commitment to the program provides the academic rigor that creates new leaders in the field. Overview of the Student community: • 3-5 years of relevant experience in an arts or arts-related institution as manager, administrator, volunteer, or artist • Average age: 29 •1/3 international • The ability to think and write critically • A deep concern for the social responsibility of the arts in society and a passion for serving the arts

“The experiences I had while at Teachers College—coursework, classmates, and professional connections—gave me a strong foundation for a successful career in arts management. Reading, thinking and discussing arts institutions every day, combined with my professional internships and work experience, helped launch my career in arts management.

cultural capital, the Arts Administration program at Teachers College takes full advantage of opportunities to integrate its students into the practical realities of the field through a wealth of internships and guest speakers.
