Embrace the Fresh Air: Bring Your Classroom Outside this Spring!

Spring is knocking on our doors, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to take learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. As the weather warms and nature begins to burst forth in vibrant colors, why not seize the chance to engage your students in outdoor education? From scavenger hunts to nature art, here are some exciting activities to breathe new life into your lessons.

1. Outdoor Scavenger Hunts

Step outside and let the adventure begin! A scavenger hunt can transform an ordinary lesson into an exciting quest for knowledge. Create a list of items related to your curriculum – whether it’s identifying different types of leaves for biology or finding historical landmarks for social studies. You can even incorporate technology by using apps like GooseChase to gamify the experience.

Check out this resource for scavenger hunt ideas!

2. Relay Races with a Twist

Inject some friendly competition into your lesson plans with relay races that blend physical activity with academic challenges. Set up stations where students must solve math problems, answer questions, or complete tasks before passing the baton to their teammates. It’s a surefire way to keep them engaged and motivated while reinforcing key concepts.

Get inspired by these relay race ideas from TeachHub!

3. Spoon Egg Races with Brain Teasers

Who says learning can’t be egg-citing? Combine the classic egg and spoon race with a mental workout by adding a twist – students must answer a question or solve a riddle before advancing to the finish line. It’s a delightful blend of fun and education that will have your class cracking up with laughter.

Teachers Making a Difference | Vol 2 Issue 3, March 2024 6

4. Nature Walk and Observation

Take advantage of the natural classroom right outside your door with a refreshing nature walk. Encourage students to observe their surroundings closely, noting the flora and fauna they encounter. You can turn this into a scientific exploration by discussing ecosystems, biodiversity, or even conducting simple experiments outdoors.

Explore ideas for enhancing nature walks with educational activities!

5. Nature Art Extravaganza

Unleash your students’ creativity with an outdoor art session inspired by the wonders of nature. Whether it’s sketching landscapes, creating leaf

rubbings, or crafting nature collages, there are endless possibilities for artistic expression. Not only does this activity foster appreciation for the environment, but it also provides a hands-on way for students to connect with the natural world.

Find inspiration for nature-based art activities here!

As educators, we have the power to transform ordinary lessons into extraordinary experiences. By taking the classroom outside this spring, we can ignite our students’ curiosity, stimulate their senses, and foster a deeper connection with the world around them. So, let’s seize the sunshine, breathe in the fresh air, and embark on an educational adventure like no other. Happy teaching!

Friday Reflect… Celebrate & Express

Gratitude

Purpose: Develop the habit of seeing and celebrating events and actions you choose to meet your needs during the week.

Why: Get encouragement from recognizing the ASSETS in your life. Develop this habit and it is MUCH easier to focus on the “good” things happening as opposed to the things that “suck.” Focusing on good things accomplished lifts you up. Focus on the sucky things, and you get sucked into that ugly dark hole of negativity = feelings of anger, guilt, shame, depression etc. which fuels bullying and other hurtful and demeaning behaviors.

Instructions: Complete the following statements by filling in the blanks. Use Needs & Feelings Vocabulary List provided. https://bit.ly/Reflect-Gratitude-Feelings-Needs To get started I suggest you only use page 1. This list is used in the 4 Step Conflict Resolution model.

1. ____________ happened this week and it enriched my life.

_____________sucedió esta semana y enriquecido mi vida.

2. As a result of this I feel ________________.

Como resultado de esto siento _____________________ .

3. ( repeat #1) ____________ meets my need for _________ (repita # 1) _________________ satisface mi necesidad de ______________

Mr. Ruez’s EXAMPLEs:

1. Seeing students helping each other this week enriched my life.

2. I feel happy as a result of this.

3. Seeing students helping each other (from #1) meets my need for sharing and contributing.

Teachers Making a Difference | Vol 2 Issue 3, March 2024 22

1. Students preparing for DOF Photo Shoot this week enriched my life.

2. I feel optimistic as a result of this.

3. Students preparing for DOF Photo Shoot (from #1) meets my need for learning & sharing.

1. Students animating Creatures this week enriched my life.

2. I feel optimistic as a result of this.

3. Students animating Creatures (from #1) meets my need for connection.

NOTES: A. ASSETS (a positive and useful thing) is a vocabulary word that is used in the Goal Setting Lesson. B. Students use whatever file management model you require. C. Using Google Docs you can easily check for understanding. D. My use of Friday is for reflecting on the week. You may find another day meets your needs. E. This is just an introduction – contact me for support. Please tell me how it works for your students.

Consistent Confidence: A Key to Success!!

Confidence is a fundamental aspect of our lives, influencing our interactions with others and our ability to achieve our goals. It is often said that one should have the same level of confidence everywhere, in front of everyone. This principle is not just a matter of personal development; it also has practical applications in various aspects of life. In this article, we will explore the concept of consistent confidence through examples, stories from Indian mythology, and provide practical applications and suggestions.

The Gym Experience:

To illustrate the idea of consistent confidence, let’s start with the example of a middle-class individual who won a one-month gym membership in

a lottery coupon for a high-end gym typically frequented by the wealthy. Initially, the person approached fellow gym-goers without knowing their real identities, treating them as ordinary people. He spoke to them fearlessly, expressed his opinions, and built friendships.

One day, he learned that some of these seemingly ordinary people were, in fact, influential figures, including a politician, a police commissioner, a businessman, and a policy maker. This revelation left him shocked and led to a noticeable decrease in his confidence the following day. He became reserved and stopped sharing his opinions openly.

Teachers Making a Difference | Vol 2 Issue 3, March 2024 24

The moral of this story is clear: when the person believed everyone was on an equal footing, he exuded confidence. However, as soon as he realized the social status of those around him, his confidence wavered. This underscores the importance of maintaining consistent confidence, irrespective of others’ positions or backgrounds.

Lessons from Indian Mythology:

Indian mythology is replete with stories that emphasize the concept of consistent confidence. One such story is that of Arjuna, a character from the ancient epic Mahabharata. Arjuna, a skilled archer, displayed unwavering confidence in his abilities, which led to his success in battles. His confidence remained the same, whether he was facing common soldiers or formidable opponents.

Another example is Lord Hanuman, who, despite his immense strength and abilities, remained humble and displayed the same level of confidence while serving Lord Rama, whether it

was lifting a mountain or leaping across the ocean.

Practical Applications:

1. Public Speaking: Whether addressing a small gathering or a large audience, maintaining a consistent level of confidence can significantly enhance your public speaking skills. Treat every speech as an opportunity to express your thoughts and ideas, regardless of your audience’s size or status.

2. Job Interviews: When attending job interviews, remember that the interviewer is a person just like you. Maintain your confidence and communicate your skills and qualifications effectively, irrespective of the job title or position of the interviewer.

3. Networking: In professional settings, meeting people from various backgrounds is common. Be yourself, express your thoughts, and build

Teachers Making a Difference | Vol 2 Issue 3, March 2024 25

connections without letting the status or identity of the individuals affect your confidence.

Suggestions for Developing Consistent Confidence:

1. Self-Acceptance: Embrace your own worth and value. Recognize that you have unique qualities and ideas to offer, and this self-acceptance can help maintain consistent confidence.

2. Practice: Confidence often comes with practice. Engage in activities that challenge you to interact with different people and speak in various settings to build and maintain your confidence.

3. Mindfulness: Be mindful of your thoughts and emotions. When you notice a dip in your confidence, remind yourself of your abilities and worth.

Conclusion:

Consistent confidence is a powerful tool that can propel you to success in various aspects of life. Whether through the story of the middle-class gym-goer, the lessons from Indian mythology, or practical applications, we can see the significance of treating everyone with the same level of confidence. By doing so, you can build more meaningful connections, achieve your goals, and lead a more fulfilling life. Remember, confidence is not about who you are speaking to; it’s about being true to yourself.
