Cake Fractions Australian Curriculum Links Yr 3: ACMNA058: Model and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5 and their multiples to a complete whole. Yr4: ACMNA077: Investigate equivalent fractions used in contexts.

Language Circular, eight, eighths, equal, fewer, fifth, least, more, pieces, quarter, rectangular, tenth, twelve, odd, whole.

Prior to Students would require experience in partitioning (cutting up) rectangles and later other shapes into equal parts. Students would need a basic understanding of length in order to partition a rectangle.

Students would need to be able to identify the whole or unit and understand that the total number of equal parts represents the denominator or name of the fraction. For example, if a region is cut into eight equal parts then the fraction name would be eighths. The numerator represents the number of equal parts. In the case of the cake images that follow the numerator would be represented by the number of pieces that have fruit or choc chips on them. For example a cake may be cut into eight equal pieces and five of those pieces might have strawberries on top. It could be said that five-eighths of the cake has strawberries on it and three-eights of the cake has nothing on it.

Where to Students would begin by partitioning simple regions such as rectangles and move to more complex regions such as circles. Circles are more complex regions to partition as the student would need to have a basic understanding of angle. The models used in the solution cards are all area based models. Students should be given experience with a variety of models. This would include length based models and later in particular a number line model. The Mathematics Curriculum specifically mentions that students should be able to locate fractions on a number line. The number line might be callibrated and the students number it appropriately or the the number line might be empty and the student would need need to callibrate and number it. See the Secret Numbers section of this book for further use of number lines.
