Teachers’ Notes

Pre-writing skills are the fundamental skills children need to develop before they are ready to begin explicit letter formation instruction. These skills contribute to a child’s ability to hold and manipulate a pencil, copy and reproduce shapes or letter strokes and to listen and follow directions. Ensure young children have the opportunity to participate and practise a variety of pre-writing skills in order to have the best chance of experiencing success when letter formation lessons begin. Below are just a few examples of pre-writing skills.

The importance of handwriting lessons and teaching letter formations With the continual growth of technology and word processing programmes, handwriting may now seem to be a trivial skill. A skill where explicit focus and repetitive practise can be viewed as a subject of the past and therefore omitted from a class timetable.

. te

o c . che e r o r st super

However, the explicit teaching of letter formations, accompanying posture and pencil grip are important skills that should not be ignored for a number of reasons. 1. The automatic recall and speedy reproduction of required letters allows mental freedom to concentrate on the elaboration of ideas, sentence structure and sequencing of content when writing. Children can concentrate on WHAT they are writing not on HOW they are writing. 2. Handwriting is a basic tool used in many subjects across the school curriculum. Poor handwriting and labouring fluency can have an adverse effect on school performance 3. When handwriting is perceived as arduous and time consuming, motivation to write can be reduced which has a direct effect on school achievement.

4

Teachers’ Notes Handwriting lessons need to be explicitly taught and include: • a functional and consistent pencil grip; • a sturdy, comfortable sitting posture; • correct letter formations; • legibility and fluency. Simply placing a handwriting book in front of a child and allowing them to trace and reproduce letters without explicitly teaching the above skills is of little value. Modest amounts of instructional time can pay off in preventing later writing problems. Ten to fifteen minutes a day is all that is required especially in the early grades.

or eBo st r e p ok u S

Tripod Grip

Standard grip: Hold pencil with thumb + index finger pencil rests on middle finger

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

Is a correct pencil grip important? A pencil grip needs to be functional and allow ease of movement to ensure fluency, strength and control. For these reasons, a tripod or a quadropod grip are the most efficient and functional grasps; to model and teach.

Quadropod Grip

Alternate grip: Hold pencil with thumb + index + middle fingers pencil rests on ring finger

A pencil grip is only a problem if a child has difficulty writing legibly, at a reasonable speed or complains of soreness. Aiming for an efficient and functional grip in the early years is recommended, as an awkward grip is a difficult habit to break.

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y• How important is the correct sitting position when writing?

. te

m . u

w ww

Very! Sitting with an upright, strong posture increases stability and provides a sturdy foundation when writing. A slouched posture with the non-dominant hand holding up the head can put stress on the muscles, joints and ligaments. When children have an unstable posture, they end up using excess energy to maintain their support and balance. Therefore, children should have: • their feet flat on the floor (correctly sized furniture is essential); • their back upright and straight; • their non-dominant hand (helping hand) resting on the paper; • their writing arm and wrist resting on the desk.

Teachers’ Notes

So many things to remember! Initially, focus on these requirements in your handwriting lessons and gradually you will notice them move into other writing tasks throughout the day. Praising children and making comment when you see this transference is always a positive way to remind little children. I use this little rhyme at the start of each handwriting lesson as a fun reminder of all the things to remember. Handwriting Rhyme

or eBo st r e p ok u S 1,2,3,4

Are my feet flat on the floor?

Is my back up nice and straight? 9,10,11,12

Is my pencil correctly held? 13, 14, 15, 16 Now I’m ready to start my writing!

This book is the final book in a four part series entitled Phonological Awareness. The other books are: Syllables and Rhyming (Book 1); Phonemic Awareness (Book 2) and Alphabet Knowledge (Book 3). The books have been designed to be used sequentially. It is strongly recommended that you use this book in particular together with Alphabet Knowledge. The letters are introduced in the same order and can be photocopied into small books for explicit letter formation lessons.
