Introduction Maths is like a jigsaw puzzle – little bits and pieces of scattered information – some fit together and make sense, some don’t. Often lessons cover a range of topics over the week – a bit of number pattern work on Monday, a bit of measurement on Tuesday, maths facts on Wednesday, and so on. Ideally maths is taught in contextual chunks rather than little bits and is integrated with other subject areas to help children see its value and purpose in everyday life, that is, to see how the pieces fit together.

There are many different ways of presenting simple maths facts for revision. Vary difficulty according to age and ability. Here is a general guideline: Year One: Addition facts to 10. Year Two: Addition and subtraction facts to 20. Include counting on and back +1,+2,+3, -1,-2,-3, doubles, zeros, 10’s facts. Use basic facts in operations to 99. Year Three: Consolidate addition and subtraction facts to 20. Use basic facts in operations to 999. Multiplication facts to 9x but begin with easy 1’s, 2’s/5’s, 1’s/0’s. The activity pages contain templates that teachers or children can enter numbers into as required. The examples below will provide some ideas.

Draw up a 1’s and 10’s column on the board. Teacher rolls die. Select a child to write the number either in the ones or tens column. Roll again. Child writes the number in the remaining column. Ask “What number have we made? How many 10’s? How many 1’s? Let’s make it with bundling sticks.” Continue rolling the die until you have 5 numbers written in the columns. Discuss which is the largest or smallest and why. Children then write the numbers from largest to smallest or vice versa.

Ask children to guess the number of beads in the jar and write their answers or tell their answers to their neighbour. To count out, tip the beads in the middle of the floor.

Select children to come out one at a time and count objects. Sort into groups of ten.

Play as a game on the blackboard. 1. Choose one child from each group to come to the board as a competitor. 2. Each competitor throws the die and draws the corresponding number of circles. 3. They throw the die again and draw the corresponding number of objects in each circle. 4. Each competitor then describes what they have, e.g. “I have 2 groups of 4 which gives me 8 altogether.” 5. The child with the highest number gets a point for their group. Continue until all children have represented their group and there is an overall winner. Alternatively, play two children at a time with the loser sitting down each time, until you have a winner remaining.
