Maths is like a jigsaw puzzle – little bits and pieces of scattered information – some fit together and make sense, some don’t. Often lessons cover a range of topics over the week – a bit of number pattern work on Monday, a bit of measurement on Tuesday, maths facts on Wednesday, and so on. Ideally maths is taught in contextual chunks rather than little bits and is integrated with other subject areas to help children see its value and purpose in everyday life, that is, to see how the pieces fit together. The activities in this book have been designed with this in mind. The activities also provide a new version of the 3 R’s: REVISION: Revise the basic concepts. REAL-LIFE: Relate to children’s own experiences. RADICAL : Fun activities and themes, games and new ideas. The tasks in the book fit into the concept areas of Number, Measurement, Space, Chance and Data and Problem Solving.
Teaching Notes
The activity sheets in this book are accompanied by introductory teaching notes which will provide teachers with the information necessary to conduct a successful lesson. Also, a number of Additional Activities pages have been included. These provide a range of stimulating ideas and activities which are unaccompanied by a worksheet. In most cases teachers can easily produce their own materials, based on the information provided. Some of the Additional Activities are intended to be used for blackboard activity sessions or in oral learning situations. Note that information for the Additional Activities is enclosed in a box for easy identification.

Teaching Notes The following notes will give teachers ideas for the use of the relevant page as well as background information to use in other lessons on the class timetable.
Activity Sheet 1: Add and Go Materials

Add and Go Activity Sheet 1; blackboard (draw up a grid as on sheet); pencils, coloured pencils; dice.

Distribute one sheet per child. Select a picture, e.g. train. Teacher throws the die (you may wish to use two dice for older children). Teacher calls out a shape, e.g. star; and the number on the die, e.g. 3 (or for older children the sum of two numbers). All children write the numeral 3 in the space marked with a star. Continue to throw the die calling a shape and number, until the four spaces marked with shapes are filled. Demonstrate on the blackboard also. Children then add across and down the grid. This activity is self-correcting as the corner answer should be true for both sums (across and down).

Use various strategies to revise and practise multiplication facts: Practise skip counting. Use the hundreds chart (Page 24) to show patterns for multiples. Play Buzz. Children count around the class. On the multiple of a given number, children say “buzz” or they are out, e.g. For multiples of 5 counting is “1, 2, 3, 4, buzz, 6, 7, 8, 9, buzz, 11, 12, 13, 14, buzz, etc.” A child who says the wrong number in the number sequence is also out. Children complete activities on selected sheet.

Discuss and list the sorts of things one may find in a safe. Include unusual and humorous objects, e.g. a set of grandpa’s teeth.

Write the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 on the board. Tell children you have a secret number between 0 and 20 that they have to guess, e.g. 12. If a child says ‘6’, reply with ‘Too small’ and draw a cross under 6 on the board. If a child says ‘19’, reply with ‘Too large’ and draw a cross under 19. Continue till children find the secret number. Use red for numbers which are too small and yellow for numbers which are too large to help identify the secret number. Children shade every second number to see a pattern for 2. Use a different colour for a pattern for 3 or try a combination pattern for 4 and 5. Other ideas may be: Shade all the numbers which have a zero. Shade all the numbers with a 5 in the ones column. Shade all the numbers with a 9 in the ones column. 1. Use the hundreds chart to practise counting forwards and backwards in ones, twos, fives, tens, starting at different numbers. 2. Teaching Points Choose two children to stand back to back, pistols at the ready (hands). They take 5 paces and stand ready to turn. Teacher shows a flashcard and/or calls out a fact, e.g. 6 + 2. First child to turn around and give the correct answer is the winner and remains standing, while the loser sits down. The next child comes up and so on until a class winner emerges. Teacher takes 20 consecutive numbers from the number board and places them in a bucket, e.g. all the numbers from 20 to 40. (If there is no number board, write the numbers on small cards.) Children draw a noughts and crosses grid on their sheet of paper (bingo card) and write in any of the numbers from 20 to 40. Teacher pulls out and calls one number at a time from the bucket. Children use a coloured pencil to draw a cross over the number if they have it on their bingo card. The first child to cross out all the numbers on the bingo card is the winner.
To practise basic facts to 20, children draw a 9 square grid as above and fill it with any numbers between 1 and 20. Instead of pulling numbers out of a bucket, the teacher gives a basic fact, e.g. 4 + 1, 10 – 1, double 6, 2 more than 5, etc. Ask children for the answer each time. Keep track of the answers so as not to repeat them. Play as for a bingo game, children crossing out the number if they have it, until there is a winner.

Write on the blackboard: forwards +1 +2 +3 backwards –1 –2 –3 The teacher writes up a starting number, e.g. 16, and ticks either ‘forwards’ or ‘backwards’. Circle one of the ‘count on’ or ‘count back’ sequences, e.g. +2. On ‘Go‘, children continue the sequence down their sheet of paper until the teacher claps. Read back the answers and check against the number board. The child who made it the furthest with the number sequence is the winner.

Have the children give the number sequence verbally while one child points to the numbers on the number board. 5. Blackboard Adding Race: Choose one child from each group to stand at the board. Start at 51 and continue adding 3. The winner is the first to get to the closest number to 100. 6. Hands Up: A competition between the teacher and the class for five minutes free time. Give the children a starting number and sequence, e.g. counting in 2’s, starting at 14. The children count out loud, carefully watching the teacher walk around the room. While the teacher’s hands are clenched in a fist, they keep counting. If the hands open up, as in a stop sign, they must immediately stop counting. The teacher receives a point if anyone is seen not counting out loud, if anyone is heard making a mistake in the counting sequence or if anyone continues counting once the hands are up. The children receive a point if they count without a mistake and stop immediately the hands are up. The first to 5 points is the winner.

Children sit in a circle. Place one card in the middle, e.g. +2. Children have to count on 2 from whichever number the teacher calls out, e.g. First child - Teacher calls out ‘6’. Child counts on 2 (6, 7, 8) then stands with the answer 8. Next child - Teacher calls out ‘11’. Child counts on 2 (11, 12, 13) then stands with the answer 13. When counting on, have children clap hands or tap shoulders. Continue around the circle, varying difficulty by changing cards or starting numbers.
