The Maths Extenders book is designed to provide extension and enrichment for upper primary-aged early finishers - to 'extend' their skills in mathematics.
ew i ev Pr
The book incorporates a range of activities which will extend the abilities of the most mathematically able student. The pages include activities using number patterns, magic squares, number tracks, algebra, number combinations, graphing and so on. In addition, scattered throughout the pages are extra 'Challenges' to further test the children. These are simply shown with a ? and will provide an extra dimension to the student's work. The book is directed towards children in the 10 to 12 age range.

Number Systems
{ rstoreB }
Our base 10 number system is derived from the Hindu-Arabic number system. For example using the number 3 293:
10s
Units
0 0 9
0 0 0 3
0 2
= 3 293
oo k
The headings a computer uses would be:
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 (16s)
{
2 x 2 x 2 (8s)
2 x 2 (4s)
2s
1
1
0
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 (16s)

= 11012

So 21 in base 2 could be written as:
10 x 10 (100s)
3
e p u S{
Other bases can also be used, e.g. computers use base 2. For example using the number 13:
Teac he r
10 x 10 x 10 (1,000)
Units
1
= 101012
