Foreword Scrapbooks and portfolios are a wonderful way to record the development of early childhood students. Children learn and improve more in their first school year than at any other time in their school life. Portfolio or scrapbook samples are an excellent form of visual reporting to parents. The samples give concrete evidence of a child’s ability to comprehend, as well as indicating achievement of skills and concept development.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Teac he r

Children love to look through a book of their own work and explain the process to a captive audience.

ew i ev Pr

These sample collections are a wonderful keepsake for the child and his/her family, and are generally cherished for years. Proformas (a child’s exploration of the process involved in completion) are included in this activity book so that teachers can simply photocopy and use to complement the child’s finished activity sheet.

In addition a feelings record (see below) is provided on some pages so that children can provide feedback about how they feel they coped with the work on the relevant page. Children could indicate, by colouring in the appropriate face, whether they were either “very happy”, “satisfied”, or “unhappy” with their efforts.

Sometimes I am happy, sometimes I am sad, sometimes I am scared and sometimes I am mad. It is important to show your feelings but you must be careful not to hurt other people’s feelings when you do. I have made a book about things that make me feel happy, sad, scared and angry. I had to recall times when I felt these ways and had help to ‘write’ them down. I have drawn pictures to show how I express these feelings.

I have been learning about the five senses that help us to see, hear, taste, smell and feel things in our world. I am the author and illustrator of this book. I had to ‘read’ the sentences on each page and identify the sense. I then wrote the correct body part on the line. My teacher helped me if it was tricky. I then drew pictures of favourite things. I have been talking about hospitals, doctors and nurses with my class. If you are very sick or hurt you might visit a hospital and stay for a while. If you get a scratch or cut you may just need a Band-Aid. Before I made this picture I had to explain to my teacher the things you should do if you cut yourself. I explained that first you must find an adult. Then the cut needs to be cleaned and dried. Finally a Band-Aid is put on to protect the cut and keep the germs out. I had to do a lot of careful reading to finish this work. I had to read the number and the word to find out how many animals to draw. If I couldn’t remember the word, I looked carefully at the word and picture sheet to help me read. I then drew the correct number of animals. I counted the animals to make sure I drew the correct amount.

This is an excellent page for early childhood students who love ‘real school work’. This page introduces many early reading concepts, e.g. left to right orientation, pictorial, numerical representation and simple word recognition. The word recognition is supported by the reference sheet with word and picture. This should be enlarged and displayed for students to refer to while working.

Enlarge to A3 size. Use paint for prints by either painting on with a brush or soaking a sponge in a puddle of paint. Children can then simply press their hand/foot onto the sponge. You will need a bowl of water for cleaning and towels. This activity can be messy so perhaps complete the activity outside.

This page has the name of Santa/Father Christmas left blank to accommodate different family ideas. Explain to the children that you will make photocopies of the letters to send to the North Pole so that they do not become concerned if they later find them in their portfolio/file.
