Crosswords for use by ESL students and learners of English. . te o c . che e r o t r s super Written by Elizabeth Bezant. © Ready-Ed Publications - 2003. Published by Ready-Ed Publications (2003) P.O. Box 276 Greenwood W.A. 6024 Email: info@readyed.com.au Website: www.readyed.com.au

Teachers’ Notes This book is designed to offer a fun, yet productive, method of reinforcing basic English skills for students of all ages. By completing these picture crosswords students are given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the correct usage and spelling of words heard regularly in most life situations. The aim of the activities is to help students gain reassurance in using English words correctly and confidently as they go about their day.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Containing easily identifiable drawings of familiar items, the crosswords can be used either as an in-class project, as a worksheet for school or home, or by students studying alone.

Teac he r

In the first section of the book each puzzle covers words starting with the same letter. The first puzzle, for example, contain only items starting with ‘A’. This is designed not only to ease initial spelling, but also to reinforce the alphabet and focus the student’s mind on the ‘A’ words around him/her.

ew i ev Pr

Each crossword in the book’s second section covers one topic, for example, food, travel, weather, numbers. This is primarily to reinforce basic learning, but also to enable students to be more exact when choosing words for speech and writing. For example, instead of saying ‘I was reading a book,’ the student might feel encouraged to state more correctly, ‘I was reading a magazine’, or ‘I was reading a newspaper’. A picture crossword is completed in much the same way as a standard crossword. The difference, however, is that each clue to the written answer is in the form of a picture, rather than a short phrase or sentence.

Tips for Students © ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons • •

•f orr evi ew pur posesonl y•

Use a pencil when filling in the answers so that any mistakes can be easily corrected. Write only capital or upper case letters in the squares (i.e. ABC not abc). This will make it easier to contain each letter in its square. If there is any doubt over an answer, leave the clue and come back to it when more words are filled in on the crossword. With more squares filled it will be easier to select the right answer.

Suggestions

m . u

Section 1 Encourage the student to use words starting with the specific letter by bringing their attention to items around them or by pointing out words used in conversations, pictures and writing. Include only words of a certain sound in a spelling list to be learnt, and use the crossword answers to reinforce the skills being treated.

. te

o c . che e r o t r s super

Section 2 Encourage the student to use the words covered in the crosswords, either in conversation, in a written exercise, in a labelled picture or by reading books on the same topic. Arrange outings to locations covered by the crosswords so that the words can be used more freely. Have the student draw pictures of the items most used in his/her day then encourage them to write the word depicted by the illustration.
