Be My Buddy - Book 1
RATIONALE: Our initial reason for organising the Be My Buddy programme was to develop a peer support reading programme that could be enjoyed by both groups of children. However, once the programme was up and running many other benefits became obvious.

Younger students developed a strong bond with an older student or buddy. They could go to their buddy in the playground if in need of help. It also helped them to feel part of the school community as they knew “a big kid” and they also enjoyed visiting their buddy’s classroom on special occasions. For the older students, the Buddy Programme provided an opportunity for them to accept responsibility for a younger student. They also became aware of their own behaviour and realised they were a role model for their buddy. Working with the younger students also made the older students more aware of the need for patience and tolerance. It helped them remember how they once were themselves and the need to be gentle and understanding. They became more aware of others on the playground, and realised the need for clear instructions as the “little people” often needed instructions repeated. This, we felt, helped to develop the oral skills of the older students.
© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons There have also been great benefits for those children who are an only child, or in the •f orr e vi ew pfamily. ur p o sestime on l y • case of the older students, the youngest in their By spending with a younger student it has helped them to see things from a different perspective.

As teachers, we have also found many positives in the programme. On special occasions such as birthdays, Easter and Christmas we have witnessed the exchanging of gifts and lasting friendships develop. We have also used the Buddy System for excursions to local events. It’s amazing how much easier it is to take young children down the street with two teachers and twenty-five helpers each holding the hand of their buddy! We have also performed combined acts at assemblies including music, poetry, dance and drama.
o c . che e We would strongly recommend you take the leap and try a Buddy Programme. r o t Remember there’s more to educationr than just the three Rs. When you see the smiles on the s s r u e p little ones’ faces as “the big kids” arrive each week and you answer the older students who ask “are we doing an extra buddy lesson this week?” because you had to miss the one the previous week, you too will know the benefits of this type of programme. If, for some reason, you have to justify the programme to your principal, then take some photos regularly, put them in an album and let them see learning in progress!

Teachers’ Notes
AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The aims of the programme are: to help groups of children learn from each other in a caring and friendly environment; to develop academic, social and personal skills; to instill in students an awareness and a need to care for others; to develop the skills of responsibility, understanding and tolerance; to assist the younger students with their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills; to foster in students a greater awareness of the world around them; to instill in students an awareness of the concept and value of friendship.

1. The programme is quite structured in nature. Two classes are involved in the programme - an older and younger class (e.g. Year 6 with a Year 1 class). Each child is given a partner or a buddy by the class teachers. These pairings are decided upon by both teachers after considering the special needs and capabilities of each child. The same partners are kept for the whole year so that a strong bond develops between the two students.
2. The classes meet once a week at a specific time and place, for 20 to 30 minutes a session. The children complete units of work together, with each unit being outlined to the older students prior to it commencing. This enables the older students to have a clear understanding of what is expected in each unit, as well as allowing time to discuss strategies and issues that may arise. A basic time frame to complete the unit is also established at this point.
© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y•
3. Each unit of work is photocopied into a booklet form. When complete it is marked by the class teachers and sent home with the younger student.
4. Each unit culminates with a special activity such as an assembly performance, a small production, a visit to a park, a 3D classroom display, class celebration, a dress-up day, etc. This culminating activity specifically relates to the unit of work previously completed.

PARENTAL SUPPORT Parental involvement is encouraged throughout the programme by: attending performances, assisting with the setting up and cleaning up of activities, providing food for celebrations and culminating activities (such as picnics etc.), reading completed units of work. All parents are to be informed about the programme at the beginning of the school year or prior to commencing the programme by the class teacher. Page 4
