The Camp Planning Book An Introduction Hi, we hope you find The Camp Planning Book as useful and helpful as we have. In fact we have used the ideas presented here in the running and participation of our own camps and have chosen and compiled the ideas that we found to be the most useful in the planning, organisation and implementation of a successful camp. This resource is divided up into five practical sections:

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Organisation guides to save you time. Before camp ideas and activities for you and your class(es). Ideas for your camp booklet. A section on when you’re on camp or ready to leave. After camp ideas and activities for you and your classes.

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

There is no right or wrong way to use this resource and most activities are self explanatory. There is a wide variety of user friendly resources that will enable you to pick and choose the most appropriate activities to suit the needs and interests of the students you are taking on camp. We have also suggested some ideas that will allow you to integrate certain aspects of the camp into the normal school curriculum.

This camp blackline masters project was developed because we found there was limited material available on how to run a camp and actual activities to use and in particular, what to consider when planning. Organisation is the key to running a successful camp and a number of guides and checklists have been developed to help you.

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons The Camp Planning Book is aimed at upper primary and lower secondary levels, but many •booklet f or evi e wp ur p os so nl ywith • aspects of the arer relevant to running school camps in e general. Good luck Jeremy Hurst & Siân Carruthers

What YYou ou Need to Do - A Suggested Checklist

Section 1: Organisation Guides

There is no right or wrong way to go about organising a camp, but the following list may help you to get started or prompt you to remember something you’ve forgotten to consider.

THINGS TO DO

DONE

Find out if any school/district policy on camps exists, particularly if you’re new to a school. Is there an allocated budget? Expectations? Past camps & where they were held?

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Look at were you want to actually do on your camp. Its a good idea to check out the camp site before you actually plan a camp. Contact the Tourist Information Centre at the place you intend to hold your camp for pamphlets and information about places of interest.

Teac he r

Prepare a camp submission.

ew i ev Pr

Make sure it is okay to go ahead with the camp. It is important to let the school administration know what you intend to do.

Book your camp site. This needs to be done well in advance and free from any previously planned school commitments. Remember, most camp sites will charge a booking fee.

Book a bus as soon as you can and if possible a bus driver you know and who is prepared to get involved and help out on camp. Consider the parents you would like to have help you on camp and let them know of the dates well in advance.

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y•

Money! It is a good idea to set about raising some money to bring down the cost of your camp. See the list of Fund Raising ideas.

Get a draft itinerary together as soon as possible so that you can get some estimate of cost (e.g. tours, etc.).

Speak to the managers of the camp site about your itinerary and any suggestions they might have. These people are often very helpful and knowledgable.

m . u

w ww

Let the parents of your class(es) have some idea about cost and make sure you have parent permission to do any extraordinary activities before planning them. Book every place you wish to visit, and remember to ask about large group booking discounts.

. te

o c . che e r o t r s super

Take out personal accident insurance for the duration of your camp. Generally, this is inexpensive, and covers you for all risks. Also, consider personal and/or school liability cover. Work on putting a camp booklet together. See Camp Book ideas.

Send out all medical/emergency forms and disclaimers prior to camp.

Confirm all bookings, times, dates and tours prior to camp. It is a good idea to have any confirmation in writing including the cost. Organise your method of payment for all activities with the school administration.

Informing Parents

When planning a camp, it is important to keep the parents of your class(es) well informed.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

2. Fund-raising details This may involve a few short notes for each fund-raising activity. Parent help and assistance required? See Fund-raising Ideas sheet (Page 8).

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

1. The initial letter. Where? When? Who? Provide Itinerary Planner (Page 7). Estimate of cost? Is there sufficient support to hold a camp? (Who can’t come?)

3. Parent Permission for activities or camp update bulletin Special permission needed for an extraordinary activity? Who are the adult staff attending camp? Changes? Finalised cost for early payment? A camp information evening for interested parents (Page 9).

4. Medical, disclaimer and emergency information forms. See Medical and Consent Forms examples page (Page 10). Medication? Condition? (e.g. diabetes) Special treatment?

See What to Pack page (Page 11). Departure details? Where? When? Changes? Definite departure date?

Tips for letter writing

m . u

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons •f or r evi ew pur posesonl y• 5. Final details and clothing list letter.

o c . che e r o t r s super

Be concise and to the point, letters that are too long are unnecessary.

If you need financial support, ask for it by letter through your local shire, P&C group at school, Lions Club, etc. Letters must be neat and easy to read.

Keep your parents informed when the need arises. Make all letters very clear and unambiguous.

Fund-raising Ideas Raffles:

Trailer load of wood, basket of goodies, prize (basketball, etc.). Be aware that raffle permits are often required.

Lolly Jar:

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Students pay to have a guess at how many lollies are in the jar and the correct guess wins the full jar. Place a $50 note on a board with lucky numbers on it and the person who guesses the lucky number gets the note.

Cake Stall:

Ask every child to bring in a cake or plate of goodies and sell them at recess time to the rest of the school.

Meeting Agenda

Quite often you will find that many parents have not been involved in a camp before so they will not know what to expect. To avoid having numerous parent interviews, phone calls, notes, etc. you might like to organise a time where parents can attend a camp meeting with all the teachers involved. This allows you to advise parents on the current arrangements that are being made, outline expectations, ask for parent help and answer any queries they might have. Below is a possible agenda with some suggestions about what parents might like to know about camp.

N.B. It is especially handy if your school or community nurse is able to come on camp to help in this area. If you cannot arrange this, make sure you have at least one adult on camp who has a First Aid Certificate. Miscellaneous: Children will ask to bring all sorts of things on camp from their personal football to musical instruments. Avoid too much extra or unnecessary luggage that won’t be used.

“Children at Ris k” P roforma Risk” Proforma

It is vital to list children who may disrupt your camp routine with any individual problems they may have. This way you can be accountable for any actions you’ve taken and you will be better prepared for any problems whether they be unlikely or probable. Graphing

Section 2: Before Camp Ideas & Activities

There are many ways to link the current curriculum to an upcoming camp, such as involving class comparisons and studies of the area that you will be visiting to make students aware of the differing conditions and environment and what affects it. Graphing using information from your school area and from the area that you will be in on camp can be give interesting data for comparison and also link several subjects such as maths and social studies. An example of data that can be graphed in an activity is precipitation in the two areas. Students can use a very simple spreadsheet to gather rainfall data for a period of two weeks (information is often found in the newspaper) and then plot it on a series of graphs. An activity that asks students to answer questions about the information can be useful to teach them to read and compare the data to gain the necessary information. An example of a simple table to record information is set out below: 16/3

Once all the information has been collected it is then a matter of using it to create a graph or series of graphs such as bar, line or pie. If the school has access to computers then the information can be put on a spreadsheet and printed out as a graph that way.

Map Reading

m . u

© Ready EdPubl i c at i on s to Classroom Activities Link ed Linked •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y• Camp Another way that you can link the upcoming camp to an activity in class is to obtain a map of the area that you will be visiting and use that to create a map reading activity for the class. This will allow you to improve children’s map reading skills as well as learning more about the environment that they will be visiting. Read through the map with the class, pointing out the areas of interest and how the key is used to read features. You can then use the information from the map to create a series of questions that the students must answer using the key/ legend to help them.

. te

o c . che e r o t r s super

Some of the questions could relate to areas such as: land and sea travel; finding roads, tracks, etc; coordinates for specific land features; highest point/lowest point; distance travelled; directions; land use.

There are many skills that can be covered using map reading that link to curriculum areas such as maths and social studies and possibly others depending on the activities that you use. All of these can be good preparation for the class camp. Page 24

Campergram This outline can be used to encourage students on camp to write letters home to parents, relatives, friends, etc. After writing their letters on the lined side, students will need to cut along the outer border. It can then be put together by folding along the main edges into the shape of an envelope. A line of glue is applied to the side edges inside the lines. These are pressed down and the top flap is folded and glued so that the envelopes is then sealed with their letter inside, ready to post. Page 30

As a part of the writing program, students can be encouraged to write about their camp experiences in the form of a REBUS, which, as demonstrated above, is writing a simple story and replacing words with pictures where appropriate. This can be done usng a computer program. Pencil and paper can also be effective, especially as you have more control over which words are changed to pictures.

Create a bird’s eye view of the camp dormitory/room that you have been staying in. Bird’s eye view means that you are looking down so that all you see is the top of all the items in your dorm, and they’re all flat shapes. While drawing your map you will need to take into consideration sizing, shape, scale and spacing of all the items in the room. Make sure that you label all the items in your map and include a lot of detail, such as suitcases pillows, beds, books, torches, etc. To finish off make sure you outline and then shade to ensure that your presentation is of a high quality. The code has been signed by the allies using a code name that refers to a type of biscuit with dark bits in it. Once you have worked out what the code name is then you write the letters of the alphabet on the top of them and then find all the other symbols in the message that match the code name symbols you have uncovered and find the rest of them in the message. Now go through the rest of the message and use your knowledge of letter and word patterns to finish off the letter.

Depending on how many decoding activities have been done before, students may need a helping hand to get started. Perhaps as a class, make suggestions about what the code name at the bottom could be and then fill in the letters in the rest of the message on top of the matching symbols. Students should then be able to look through the message and fill in some missing letters from common words, such as ‘the’ and ‘in’. Once some of these more common letters have been found it will simply be a matter of going through and using their knowledge of letter and word patterns to fill in the remaining words. If some students do get really stuck, then it may be necessary to give them some additional letter clues to help them complete the puzzle.

Balloon Relays

Put students into teams with half the team at one end of the room and the second half facing at the other. The first person places the balloon between his/her legs, runs to the person at the other end and passes him/her the balloon without using the hands. The winner is the team that gets through the whole team first with their balloon intact.

Lifesaver P ass Pass

Put students into teams and get them to stand in a straight line, one behind the other. Give each student a toothpick which they must hold between their teeth and the starting student of each team a Lifesaver that sits on the toothpick in their mouth. To win, the team members must be the first team to pass the Lifesaver down to the end using only the toothpick.

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

Place the students into teams of about 10 and ask them to stand in a straight line. Give the first student in each team a very long piece of string. The aim is to thread the string through their clothes from top to bottom and then hand the string to the next person who threads the string through their clothes from bottom to top and so on right to the end of the team.

Arm Knots

Ask the students to get into teams of about 10 and then get each team to stand in a huddle really close together. The students then need to grasp the hands of two other people in their team until everyone is holding two other hands. Their task is then to straighten the team into a line without letting go of any hands and beat the other teams to it.

Organise the students into teams and get them into straight lines. Give the Pass the leaders of each team an orange to hold in their necks, without using any hands. The team must pass the orange down the length the team, from Š R e a dy E d P u b l i c at i o nofs Orange person to person, without dropping it. If dropped, the orange has to go back

. t e Star Groups Animal Calls

Put students into teams and give team members a straw to hold in their mouths. Team leaders are given a paper fish that they hold on the end of their straw by suction. The aim is then to pass the paper fish down the length of the team from person to person by sucking on the straw to hold the fish on.

You will need to organise large white stickers and write a selection of famous names on each sticker. Place a sticker on the back of children without telling them who it is. Their aim is to walk around the room asking other students questions about who they might be. Students can only answer with a yes or a no and can then ask questions about themselves.

Using about five different coloured stars, place one on the forehead of each student without letting them know or see what colour star they have. Once each student has a star on their forehead they must try and organise themselves into their colour star groups but they can not talk at all while doing so. They must work out how to communicate messages without speaking.

Split the students into two groups and put them at either end of the room. Assign each child in one team an animal noise. Now give the other team corresponding animal names so that each child will have an animal partner at the other end of the room. Once all the students are blindfolded, ask them to kneel down and crawl to the middle of the room using their animal noise to find the animal partner.

Place the students into teams with half of each team at either end of the room. Give the leader of each team a spoon with an egg on it. They must run to the other end of the room and pass the egg to the next member of the team. They must get through the whole team without dropping the egg.

Camp Assignment Ideas

A school camp provides the opportunity for learning based on experience and for nearly every year group, this provides endless opportunities for all areas across the curriculum and in all subjects. Below are some assignment ideas you might like to pursue before or after your camp. Assignment Ideas has been included here as a major activity as the children should have a sound understanding of what they’re looking for, thus providing confidence in an area that is difficult to teach.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Write a camp feature page for a class newspaper.

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

Design a brochure for the camp site.

Give the children a research project on the camp area, e.g. the community, industry, environment, lifestyle.

Make a fun class book based on camp where the children are responsible for one whole page each. Create an art mural or collage display using camp as the theme.

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons Using your camp as the topic, organise a class “News article writing competition” for the school magazine or school newsletter. •f or r ev i ew pur posesonl y•

Treat your camp booklet as a work contract or assignment to be handed in at a due date.

Research a series of questions about the camp environment which focus on surrounding areas not looked at whilst on camp.

w ww

m . u

Perform a group play based on camp and turn it into a theme, e.g. fairytale.

What problems exist in the area, e.g. water pollution, unemployment, people leaving, endangered species, other environmental issues? Get the students to brainstorm any problems and have them work on a design brief to help solve such problems (this ties in with design and technology).

. te

o c . che e r o t r s super

Start a communication program with another school located near the camp site to share work, aid in research, discuss environmental issues and simply share ideas. (This would run well using email, providing both schools have the technology.)

Camp Collage

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

ew i ev Pr

Teac he r

A camp collage is a simple art activity that requires students to search through magazines and find pictures and drawings that relate to their recent camp. Once they have acquired a pile of appropriate pictures then they simply glue them onto a white piece of paper, overlapping the edges of each picture so there are no gaps. When it is finished it can be framed with coloured cardboard and titled, ready to be hung in the classroom.
