COMPREHENDING FICTION Lower

FOREWORD 'Comprehending Fiction' contains sixteen original pieces of prose with vocabulary to suit the reading level of its intended audience. Associated activities include cloze, sequencing, story mapping, colouring and drawing, and comprehension, with an emphasis on literal and inferential questions. There is a range of difficulty levels in the accompanying activities that will allow classroom teachers to cater for individual differences by choosing different activities for students of different abilities.

Mrs Turtle's Lucky Escape It was a very hot day. Mrs Turtle came out of the river where she lived. She walked along the river bank. There she found a tree, which she could rest beneath and keep cool. Soon she was fast asleep. A big bird sat on a branch in the tree. The bird was hungry. It flew down near Mrs Turtle. She woke up just in time. Quickly she hid inside her hard shell until the bird went away. Back she went into the water, where it was much safer.

Betty the Bird Betty the bird lived in a nest made of sticks. Inside the nest there was wool to keep her three baby chicks warm. One morning, Betty had to fly away to find food for her chicks. They like worms to eat. They would be safe from cats in their nest up in the tree. Soon Betty came flying back to the nest. She began to give the food to the chicks. She sang to her chicks. 'Tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet.' After lunch, the baby chicks went to sleep.

Sid the Snail The rain fell from the black sky. Soon the wind and rain stopped and out came the sunshine. Sid the snail came out from his hiding spot in Mrs James' garden. He slid over the red brick path on his way to look for food. He was nearly run over as a big brown dog went running by. It took Sid a long time before he found a nice green plant to eat. It was a Sunday morning in the town of Sampson. Jenny Brown and her older brother Greg put on their jumpers. Soon they were on their way to the corner shop. They had to buy milk and bread for their mother. Just as they were leaving the shop, they heard the sound of drums coming down the street. They looked up to see a clown leading a circus into town. The clown had a red nose, large blue boots, yellow pants and a green hat. After the clown there came a monkey riding on a pony's back. Then came an elephant, a tiger in a cage and a horse. Adam Ant's Ride With the stars shining above, Adam Ant went out for a walk all alone. He came to a large yellow leaf and stopped there for a rest. Old Bill Old Bill lived all alone in his little house. The house had a red roof, a green door and a blue chimney. Today he had to go to the forest for firewood. First he lit a fire to warm the house. Danny Dinosaur A long time ago there lived a happy dinosaur named Danny. One day, Danny went to visit his brother. His name was Sam. Before he left his home in the cave, Danny put his jumper on. He went to Sam's house, but Sam was not home. Danny decided to go for a walk. Along the way he walked through a forest of large trees. At the end of the forest he came upon an old house. Roger's Lucky Day Rain fell softly from the sky. Old Roger was getting wet as he ran along the road. Cars went by in a hurry, making Roger wetter and wetter. Soon a big blue car came to a stop near Roger at a crosswalk. Roger barked 'thank you' to the car for stopping. He started to go over the

Then he ran to the other side of the road and up a small hill until he came to the very top. Here he found a tree with no leaves on it at all. Under this tree he dug a deep hole with his front feet, and into the hole went the bone. With a smile on his face, Roger filled the hole up with dirt and then off he went back home.
