Theme Packs for Lower Primary Foreword Author: Helen Hall Illustrated by: Leslea Carter This series of books has been published for use in lower primary Years and is based on a series of themes that students of this age level have shown empathy with. The books present a range of activities that can be integrated into the teaching program as a complete theme or as individual activities. Activities cover the language, mathematics, creative and problem-solving aspects of the school program. To supplement the activities a further selection of ideas is provided to develop the theme and to allow for integration into the class program. The author has written the activities to be used mainly in the first and second years of a student's schooling; however, they can also be applied as high-interest remedial activities for other Year levels.

Words and ideas about space.

Classify:

Classify words from brainstorm under headings such as planets, people, needs, vehicles etc.

Label:

Make papier mâché planets in art and write labels for each.

List:

Make a list of things which can fly - planes, rockets, spaceships, balloons, birds, kites . . .

Writing:

Write on shaped paper about flight.

Shared Book: Share the big book The Jigaree (Story Box). Discuss the possibility of life on another planet, what the life forms may be etc. Story Map:

Make a story map of The Jigaree.

© R. I . C.Publ i cat i ons Text Innov.: Rewrite the story The Jigaree, changing the characters. •f or r evi ew pur posesonl y• Writing: Write a letter to another planet telling the inhabitants of life on Drama:

Art/Craft Activities (cont.) 3-D Modelling:Using a variety of boxes, cardboard tubes, milk cartons, foil pie trays etc., construct rockets and space ships. Paint the finished models and hang them around the planets from the previous activity. Kites:

Decorate large brown bags with paper and paint. Attach strings, streamers. Fly.

Blob Painting: Fold a large sheet of white paper. Blob paint along the fold. Fold the paper and press out the paint. Open and dry. Cut out the dried 'Blob Martian'. Write a story about him/her. Exploded Planets:

Trace a round template onto coloured paper. Cut out the circle. Cut up the circle into a variety of shapes. Paste onto white card/ paper leaving a space between each piece to form an 'exploded planet'.

Paper Plane: Fold plane, decorate with signs, numbers and colours.

Mathematics Activities Measuring:

Use folded planes to measure distances flown and time taken to fly. Graph results and discuss. This activity can be repeated by using blown-up balloons which are then released.
