Dice activities
Foreword
Successful maths students manipulate number mentally. The activities in Dice activities – Building multiplication facts and developing fluency were created by teachers to engage students in developing fluency with multiplication facts, empowering students with the ability to be successful at maths. The activities in this book focus on number and operations. They also address reasoning, problem solving and probability.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
The activities require only the use of dice, commonly available manipulatives. These activities are easily adapted to home schooling and for parents who wish to participate in the mathematics education of their children. They provide an opportunity for students to practise multiplication facts without paper-and-pencil drill.

Introduction Dice activities – Building multiplication facts and developing fluency is designed for teachers and parents to use with students in Years 3–7. The activities are engaging, challenging, and fun. Students have a variety of opportunities to practice multiplication facts without tedious paper-and-pencil drills.
Teac he r
Dice activities presents seven dice activities for each of the multiplication facts for the numbers 2 to 12. All seven activities involve students tossing two dice, finding the sum, and multiplying the sum by the numbers 2 to 12.
ew i ev Pr
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
Dice activities provides opportunities for students to: • reinforce number patterns • develop fluency with multiplication facts • develop game playing strategies • engage in probability • diversify instruction.
The simple tic tac toe activity is a game involving chance. The players are more dependent on the toss of the dice than in any of the other activities. Not all possible multiples of 2 through to 12 are represented. This activity is an introduction to four-grid tic tac toe.
The four-grid tic tac toe is less an activity © R. I . C.Publ i cat i ons of chance and more of skill than the simple version. Players place as many lots of three The graph• activities introduce thei table of p f o r r e v e w u r p os saso n l y • tokens in e a row they can on any of the facts for a specific multiplication family of facts.
. te
grids until all of the possible moves have been played. Players then count their sets of three tokens in a row to determine who has the most. Players sometimes have a choice of blocking an opponent.
m . u
w ww
Students toss two dice, find the sum of the two dice, and then multiply the sum by the specified multiplicand for the activity. Students find the product on the graph. They either write the multiplication sentence (for example, 4 x 7) in the product’s column or write the product in the product’s column. The multiples listed in sequence on the graph aid students in computation.
Assigning the same dice activities to different multiplication facts for specific students provides teachers with opportunities to differentiate classroom instruction from homework assignments.
o c . che e r o t r s super
The table completion activities challenge students to complete their chart before their opponents. The players are dependent on tossing the sums between 2 and 12 before their opponent does. Some of the table completion activities involve students working on a different multiple than their opponents. Three chart activities—Four in a row, Square off and Crossover—present a choice of games involving strategies of placing four tokens in a row, forming a square with four tokens, or placing tokens so they cross the chart either vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

A student tosses the dice, finds the sum and multiplies it by the number specified on the chart; however, instead of recording the product, he or she performs any of the following variations and records that computation in the product’s column: • Double or triple the multiple. • Halve the multiple. • Add 5 to the multiple and halve the result. • Add 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 to the multiple. • Subtract 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 from the multiple. (Will possibly result in a negative number.) • Divide the product by 3 (or any other number from 2 to 12) and record the remainder in the product’s column.

Variations
• When the graphs are completed, see what patterns emerge. • Examine the data on several graphs: What columns are more/less likely to be filled in? Lead students to look at the distribution of sums when tossing two dice. (Probability) • Some students will not notice that the multiples are in sequence on the X-axis and will use repeated addition or recall to arrive at the multiplication fact. Some students may need to be led to see how to use the graph information as a tool.
ew i ev Pr
• Toss 2 dice and calculate the sum of the numbers rolled. Multiply the sum by the specific number given. • The multiples of the given number are in sequence on the X-axis (bottom row) of the graph. • Find the multiple and write it in the same column or write the number sentence that produced the multiple; for example, for ‘16’ write ‘2 x 8’.

Two players per team is suggested. Having teams gives students an opportunity to discuss moves and strategies and provides a check on correct computation.
• Each team tosses a dice. The team with the larger number goes first. • Toss two dice and calculate the sum of the number rolled. Multiply the sum by the number at the top of each chart. • Record the product next to the sum in the table. • If the sum has already been tossed, the team loses a turn. • The first team to complete their table wins.
Teams toss two dice, find the sum and multiply it by the number written on the chart; however, instead of recording the product, they perform any of the following variations and record that computation next to the product: • Double or triple the product. • Halve the product. • Add 5 to the product and halve the result. • Add 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 to the product. • Subtract 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 from the product. (Will possibly result in a negative number.) • Tally both columns in each activity and see if there is a pattern.

Directions for Four in a row
Introduce Four in a row by demonstrating the activity on an overhead transparency and playing against the class.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
• Each team tosses a dice. The team with the larger number goes first. • Toss two dice and calculate the sum of the number rolled. Multiply the sum by the specific multiplicand for the activity. • Your team should attempt to line up four of your tokens vertically, horizontally or diagonally before your opponent does. • The first team to align four tokens in a row wins.
• This activity is similar to other games (for example, Connect 4™) where defence is important. How does the toss of the dice influence strategy? Is this activity more a game of defence or offence? • Ask: Does this activity mainly involve more luck or skill? • Keep a recording of each dice toss. Which combinations were tossed the most? The least?

If a student is struggling with recalling multiplication facts, suggest that he or she lists the multiples of the multiplicand as a reference. Before placing a token on the chart, team members can say the multiplication fact aloud; for example: ‘Seven times three equals twenty-one’.

Directions for Square off
Introduce Square off by demonstrating the activity on an overhead transparency and playing against the class.
• Each team toss a dice. The team with the larger number goes first. • Toss two dice and calculate the sum of the numbers rolled. Multiply the sum by the specific multiplicand for the activity. • Your team should attempt to arrange the tokens to form a 2-by-2 square. • The first team to form three squares wins.
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
• Ask: Is this more a game of luck or skill? • Is there more opportunity in Square off than in Four in a row or Crossover to play defensively; that is, prevent the opposing team from making a square? • Which of the three activities—Square off, Four in a row or Crossover—allows for more opportunities to block the other team? Why is that?
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
Two teams, with two players per team, is suggested. Having teams gives students an opportunity to discuss moves and strategies and provides a check on correct computation. How to play
Discussion

Directions for Crossover
Introduce Crossover by demonstrating the activity on an overhead transparency and playing against the class.
• Each team tosses a dice. The team with the larger number goes first and also determines the direction of the activity. • Toss two dice and calculate the sum of the numbers rolled. Multiply the sum by the specific multiplicand for the activity. • Locate the product in either the outside right or outside left column of the chart and place a token on the product. • If no box in the outside columns contains the product, your team loses a turn. • Once your team is able to place a token on a box in an outside column, the opposing team must then place its tokens in a box in the opposite outside column. • With each further toss of the dice, the teams attempt to advance to the opposite side of the chart, placing their tokens in a continuous alignment, vertically, horizontally or diagonally, from the original token. • The first team to reach the opposite column wins.
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
• Ask: Is this more a game of luck or skill? • Is there more opportunity in Crossover than in Square off or Four in a row to play defensively; that is, prevent the opposing team from moving across the chart? • Which of the three activities—Square off, Four in a row, or Crossover—allows for more opportunities to block the other team? Why is that?

How to play: Two-dice-x-2 tic tac toe Introduce the two-dice-x-2 tic tac toe by demonstrating the activity on an overhead transparency and playing against the class.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
Warm-up activity
• Introduce the tic tac toe activities by demonstrating a standard game of tic tac toe, using Xs and Os, and playing against the class. • Decide who is to use the X and who is to use the O. • Each side tosses a dice. Larger number goes first. • Take turns placing a X or O on a three-bythree grid. • The first team to place three Xs or Os in a continuous alignment, vertically, horizontally or diagonally, wins the game. • First side to win two out of three games is the winner.
• Each team tosses a dice. Team with the larger number goes first. • Toss two dice and calculate the sum. Multiply the sum by the specific multiplicand for the activity. • Place a token on the product on the tic tac toe grid. • With each dice toss, teams attempt to place their tokens in continuous alignment, vertically, horizontally or diagonally, to win the game. • If the product is not shown on the grid or already has a token on it, your team loses a turn. • The first team to form a tic tac toe vertically, horizontally or diagonally wins.

Each tic tac toe activity is paired with a four-grid tic tac toe activity, providing diverse ways to reinforce multiplication facts. This presents ample opportunities for some students to practise playing two-dice tic tac toe with each set of multiples for the numbers 2 to 9, before moving on to the more complicated four-grid tic tac toe. The tic tac toe activities introduce the standard game of tic tac toe and introduce students to the concepts of fair chance and what makes a game fair.

How to play: four-grid tic tac toe
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
• Each team tosses a dice. The team with the larger number goes first. • Toss two dice and calculate the sum of the numbers rolled. Multiply the sum by the specific multiplicand for the activity. • Place a token on the product on any of the four tic tac toe grids. • With each further dice toss, your team should attempt to place your tokens in continuous alignment, vertically, horizontally or diagonally, forming as many tic tac toe wins as possible. • If a product is not shown on the grid or already has a token on it, your team loses a turn. • When no more plays are possible, each team counts their tic tac toe wins (sets of three tokens in a row). The team with the most tic tac toes wins.
Suggestions
If a student is struggling with recalling multiplication facts, suggest that he or she lists the multiples of the multiplicand as a reference. Before placing a token on the chart, team members can say the multiplication fact aloud; for example, ‘Seven times three equals twenty-one’.
Discussion
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
Introduce four-grid tic tac toe by demonstrating the activity on an overhead transparency and playing against the class. Two teams, with two players per team is suggested. Having teams gives students an opportunity to discuss moves and strategies and provides a check on correct computation.
Ask: • Is this a game of luck or skill? • Is there an opportunity to play defensively? • What is the most tic tac toe wins possible in one of the grids? • Which strategy works best—trying to get the most three tokens in a row or trying to block your opponent?
