Number facts in seven days Foreword Students need certain facts at their disposal when doing mathematics, such as the addition facts to 20 and multiplication facts. Research shows that children’s instant recall of these basic number facts will only progress from short-term memory (easily forgotten) to the long-term memory through constant practise and reinforcement. Number facts in seven days offers an easy-to-follow systematic program to promote the learning of these essential number facts. Easily incorporated into any weekly program, teachers introduce the facts, which are then reinforced at home. Letters to parents are included in the book, which clearly state the facts to be practised that day.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
Strategies are included to help reduce the number of facts to be learned. Students will be happy to know that only thirty-six times tables need to be memorised to master all of the multiplication tables!

Teachers notes One of the most important skills students need is a mastery of the basic computational skills. All people require the ability to mentally compute basic addition and multiplication facts quickly and accurately. It is also very important for students to understand all they can about addition and multiplication and how they relate. Students should use manipulatives to help them reinforce their understanding of the concepts. This book does not purposely mean to address the use of manipulatives, but students need to experience the concepts involved prior to memorising facts.

memorised. Some examples of math facts are addition facts, multiplication facts and definitions.
An algorithm is a systematic method to solve a problem … a rule. While algorithms use facts, there is a difference between the two.
Let us look at some examples:

w ww
m . u
Students are taught to solve this problem by adding 8 + 4 = 12 (a fact). Then, to add 2 + 3 (really 20 + 30) and get 5 (really 50). 2 + 3 = 5 is a fact. Then 12 + 50 = 2 + 0 (a fact) and 1 + 5 = 6 (a fact), to get 62.
. te
It is also a fact that 12 is equal to 10 + 2 and 50 is equal to 5(10) + 0. But the procedure used in solving this problem is the algorithm. One can see from this example that all addition facts and all multiplication facts are single digits less than ten.
o c . ch 9 x 12 = 108 is an algorithm involving the facts 9 x 2 and 9 x 1 (the 1 e being in 10s place), r er o yielding 18 + 90 = 108. t s super Therefore, it is never necessary to memorise +
12 x 13 etc., because this product is produced by an algorithm. It is helpful for students to complete a blank addition or multiplication table themselves, providing them with a better understanding of how to read these tables (See Table 3, page viii and Table 4, page ix). iv

Addition Facts
Teachers notes
Students experiment with manipulatives when finding sums. Finding ‘families’ of facts equal to a specific number is a great way to complete a blank addition table (Table 3, page viii) and also helps students understand how this system works. Suppose we use two different colours of Unifex® cubes and make sets equal to 6. We could get:
r o e t s Bo r 2e red + 4 yellow (6 cubes) p3 red + 3 yellow (6 cubes) ok u S 4 red + 2 yellow (6 cubes)
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
1 red + 5 yellow (6 cubes)
5 red + 1 yellow (6 cubes)
Regardless of how we do it, they all produce a total of 6. While 1 red and 5 yellow is different than 5 red and 1 yellow, each produces a total of 6 cubes. Therefore, it is clear that if we are only interested in the sum of the two sets, then 1 + 5 = 5 + 1 = 6 etc.

Dear parents Our class is learning the addition facts. We are using a system which may be different than the way you learned your addition facts. You can help your child learn these facts by drilling the designated set of facts daily and reviewing previously learned facts. Please only drill the facts listed because the system works best when followed exactly.

Multiplication Facts
Teachers notes
There are many facts and skills a student needs to have at their disposal when doing mathematics, but none are more important than the multiplication facts. One needs to know addition facts too, but can use counting – on techniques and other strategies to add 9 and 6. But, multiplying 9 x 6 requires not only an understanding what that means, but in my opinion, an immediate response. Of course, one could add nine sixes or six nines, but that isn’t easy for many students. The solution is to memorise the multiplication facts early and quickly.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S I am also aware that memorising anything in mathematics without understanding is not

As a maths educator, I have tried various approaches and have had teachers propose many different ways to help students memorise the multiplication facts, but none as effective as my ‘Seven Day’ method.
appropriate.
Therefore, prior to applying my Seven Day system, I strongly suggest that teachers are certain that their students have been given the appropriate background so they understand what multiplication is. To do this, I recommend Marilyn Burns’ wonderful book, Math by all means: multiplication.

Depending on the background of the student, you may not have to do every lesson but can pick and choose from the delightful menu of lessons and activities. Also, before beginning my Seven Day program, there are three maths principles which students need to be aware of:

Multiplying any number by one yields that number.
The order in which we multiply does not change the result. (the Commutative Principle of Multiplication)

Multiplication Facts
Teachers notes
To begin, I recommend that students be given a blank multiplication table (see Table 1 on page 28) without the products and have them complete the table. To complete the table they may use any prior knowledge, manipulatives or strategy they choose. Completing the table will help them learn how to ‘read the table’, and will allow them to discover some of the patterns in the table.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S • First, notice that the product of any number and zero equals zero (a x 0 = 0). So we
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
Next, give each student Table 2 (on page 29) and discuss how the three principles allow us to black out certain facts. (See Table 3 on page 30.) The next step is to look at Table 3 and observe any patterns. Students may suggest a number of patterns, but there are three that need to be found: need not memorise any facts involving zero as a factor. (see Table 3)
• Secondly, it should be observed that one times any number, a, has a product of a (1 x a = a). Therefore, we do not need to memorise any products involving one, since 1 x a = a: for example, 1 x 3 = 3, 1 x 7 = 7 etc. Mark out these products, as shown in Table 3.
© R. I . C.Publ i cat i ons •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y•
• Thirdly, it should be observed that the products of numbers where the order is reversed is the same. For example, notice 3 x 4 = 4 x 3, 6 x 5 = 5 x 6 etc. Therefore, since a x b = b x a, only half of the table needs to be memorised. When you know 6 x 9 you know 9 x 6 etc.
Mark out all products that ‘commute’, as they are the reverses of a set of products (see Table 3).
w ww
m . u
At this point, you will have only 36 products that have not been marked out. These are the facts we need to memorise.
. tthat we have also eliminated 1 x a, because multiplication byoone does not • Notee c . change anything e.g. 1 x a = a. ch e r e o t • Note that since a x b = br xs a (order doesn’t matter), only part of the facts need to be s r u e p memorised. When you know 5 x 6 = 30, you know 6 x 5 = 30.
• Note that we have eliminated 0 x a, because the answer is always zero. Nothing to memorise.
Now the process. (Refer to Table 3) Special note: Each day, send the Parent Letter home to ask parents for their help.

Over the next seven days we are learning the multiplication facts. We are using a system called ‘Seven days to multiplication mastery’. Each day I will send you some problems I want you to help your child master. Have your child master these facts (and these only), so that your child will know these facts by tomorrow. How you do this is up to you.
