Foreword Reading with phonics is a series of three books designed to develop students’ phonemic awareness through a text with related worksheets. This allows the students to practise the sound being taught while reading and comprehending text. Each sound has two stories based around the same theme so the teacher can cater for individual ability levels within the classroom. The word cards at the end of each treated sound help to consolidate the students’ knowledge of the sounds. They can be used to introduce or consolidate teaching and learning.

Teachers notes Phonics is a large component of a student’s reading development and often it is taught in isolation rather than within a text. In this series of phonic books, the student develops his/her phonemic awareness within the structure of a text and its supporting worksheets. Each grapheme is treated within a story so the student can associate the sound with a word and develop strategies for word identification and comprehension. The stories are accompanied by relevant worksheets that consolidate the sound being treated.
r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S
The teacher has a choice of texts and worksheets to use with the grapheme being covered. This enables different levels of ability to be catered for within the classroom.
ew i ev Pr
Teac he r
In Books 1 and 2, the sounds are covered individually. In Book 3, different graphemes that represent the same sound families are treated. The books all follow the same format: two sets of stories based around the sound, followed by corresponding worksheets. The word cards can be used for sight vocabulary, home reading, spelling words, word sorts, making sentences or reading with a partner. The text offers the teacher two choices: a simple story or a more complex story. The teacher can choose which is more appropriate for the level of the student.

A note on the pronunciation of some digraphs
Although some digraphs can be used to represent slightly different sounds, they have not been differentiated in this book. Teachers should explain to their students that there can be an additional pronunciation with these letters in certain words. These words have been included because they are beneficial to students’ understanding of their spelling. For example, the digraphs u-e, ue and ew can produce an ‘oo’ sound (as in flute, glue and screw). Although the keywords used for these digraphs concentrate on this sound, words such as cube, new and stew, which have a ‘yoo’ sound, have also been included. The same is true for the digraph er. While the keyword used for the digraph concentrates on the ‘er’ sound (as in germ and pert), pronunciation of er when the digraph is at the end of a word can create an ‘uh’ sound (as in summer, dinner and older). For this book, where worksheet instructions refer to a digraph (for example, ue), this indicates that students should only concentrate on the words which contain the relevant digraph sound when pronounced. iv

Kirk came first, Tom came second, Anna came third and I came last. Dad had brought a soccer ball to the park and we played a game of soccer. It was the girls against the boys. I thought the girls won, but Kirk said the boys scored more goals. We were all thirsty after our game and we had a big drink of water. When it was three-thirty, Dad said it was time to go home for birthday cake. Mum made us wash our dirty hands and then we had birthday cake and hot chocolate.

I flew my kite for a long time and then Dad said we could go over to the slides. Next to the big pipe slide was a man who hired bikes to people. Lots of people were enjoying the fine weather and hiring bikes. Soon it was time to go. We got back home at six o’clock and Mum had dinner ready. It was fried rice and spiced chicken. I told Mum it was a very nice meal.
o c . che e r o After dinner, I helped Mum wipe down the cupboards and then I had to t r s s r u e p write a story for school. I called my story ‘My kite’. It was about a little boy who went to the park to fly his kite with his dad. I didn’t have to think about it, I just had to write about the things we did at the park. I liked writing my story. Dad came and tucked me in. He said we could go to the park and fly my kite another day.

A big, black crow was sitting in the lower branches of the tree. The boy and his friends were going rowing on the lake in a rowboat. They didn’t know how to row, so his dad was showing them how to row. If they had a problem, his dad said he would tow them back in. The wind had blown a yellow bow off the table, so the crow hopped off and poked her head through the bow. The crow suddenly saw a big, funny-looking shadow and flew up into the tree. On the ground below, she could still see the strange shadow. The crow moved her head and the shadow moved. She hopped onto a lower branch and the shadow hopped too. She slowly turned around and the shadow slowly turned too. ‘That’s strange’, thought the crow. Then she remembered the yellow bow. ‘Oh my, it is only my shadow with the bow around my neck. Silly me, I will throw the bow off and then I won’t frighten myself or my friends.’ The bow landed on the ground below, near the table. Just then the crow heard the boy’s father. ‘Come on all you slowcoaches. Hurry up! It’s time to eat.’ The boys ran as fast as they could and reached the table at the same time. The crow flew away and sat in a tree where she could keep her eye out for any food scraps that might blow off the table. ‘What an interesting day’, thought the crow.

The wind was strong and blew him into the roses. Some thorns ripped his shorts, but he kept on going. He looked in the barn. Everything was fine. The pigs were snorting and the sheep were huddled together. They had been shorn last week, so they didn’t have much wool to keep them warm. He looked in the north corn paddock, trying to see his horse. He couldn’t see him. ‘Oh, no’ said the farmer. ‘He has run away again. He doesn’t like storms.’ The farmer knew where to look. He found his horse in the woods. He led him back and put him in the barn.
He got the big pitchfork and forked some hay onto it and fed his horse to calm him down. When all the animals were safe and sound, the farmer went back to the house and went to bed. He would check his animals again in the morning—and fix his torn shorts.

At school Dean had been reading about plants.
Dad said they could grow some beans. They planted the seeds. The plants grew tall with lots of leaves and beans.
Dean took some beans to school. His teacher was going to make a bean dip with them, and they were going to eat it for a treat. Everyone sat in their seats. Dean reached across the table and put some bean dip on his carrot stick. To his surprise, he liked it.

After lunch we stopped at a park and played games. The sun was shining and the birds were chirping. We had a running race. We all stirred our drinks and made the chocolate come to the top. Yum, yum.
When he went home he told his mum that he had eaten beans in a dip. His mum asked the teacher for the recipe and made some to take to the picnic at the beach the next day.
My birthday presents were on the table, I got a new shirt, a new skirt and a book about birds. I put my skirt on and twirled around the room, giving everyone a hug.
They had a fun day at the beach. They played a game of beach volleyball. A seal came out of the water and sat on the rocks.
I had a great birthday.

My mousetrap had worked! Mum was very happy and we danced around the kitchen. We went outside and I let the mouse go near the water fountain. Then we bounced a ball together. Our greyhound called Betsy always tries to catch the ball. She brings it back and puts it on the ground. She wants us to throw it away again. She barks very loudly when we play with the ball. By then, the clouds in the sky were getting dark, and rain started to fall. Mum shouted for me to come inside.

He said they could get a tow in if they got stuck. The gentle breeze was blowing over the freshly-cut grass. What a lovely day it was! The crow flew from the tree. The grass had just been mown, and there was a gentle breeze blowing. What a great day it was going to be! All his friends were waiting for him and they gave him lots of presents. He slowly unwrapped them and left the presents, paper and bows on the table while they played.

A big, black crow was sitting in the lower branches of the tree. The boy and his friends were going rowing on the lake in a rowboat. They didn’t know how to row, so his dad was showing them how to row. If they had a problem, his dad said he would tow them back in. The wind had blown a yellow bow off the table, so the crow hopped down and poked her head through the bow.

The crow suddenly saw a big, funny-looking shadow and flew up into the tree. On the ground below, she could still see the strange shadow. The crow moved her head and the shadow moved. She hopped onto the lower branch and the shadow hopped too. ’Come on all you slowcoaches. Hurry up! It’s time to eat.’ The boys ran as fast as they could and reached the table at the same time. The crow flew away and sat in a tree where she could keep her eye out for any food scraps that might blow off the table. ‘What an interesting day’, thought the crow. 130 Reading with phonics

My dog is special. When he was a puppy his back leg got caught in a coil of wire and the vet had to amputate his leg at the knee joint. It doesn’t matter to Trippy, he just runs and hops to get around. Trippy has a very good sense of smell. If he finds something, he will bark and point his nose and tail to show you where to look.
One day, my dad was changing the oil in the car when Trippy started barking. Dad had to stop working and check out why Trippy was making so much noise.

Trippy had been digging in the moist soil and was pointing with his nose at something. When Dad had a look he saw a bag in the soil. The bag had old coins in it. Dad wondered who had buried them. Maybe they were buried treasure! He told Trippy he was a good dog and gave him a treat. Dad took them to the bank and they said they were not valuable, just old coins. Another time, Trippy was barking at the toilet door. When Dad came inside to see what was going on, he heard Mum yelling to let her out. The toilet door handle had come off and Mum couldn’t get out.

That was a funny one, although Mum didn’t think so. Trippy even stopped my little sister from getting into some poison. He stood in front of the bottle and barked until Mum came. Mum boiled up a special dinner for him that time.

When we go to the park people say, ‘Oh, look at your poor dog’. We tell them that Trippy is the best dog ever and we spoil him. Trippy just barks and jumps around. He can be very noisy. He also likes to join in games and loves fetching a stick. He could play that game all day. We love and spoil Trippy and he looks after our family.
