Foreword Classroom craft – a year of activities is a hugely useful resource that provides fun and easy craft projects to capture student’s interest and foster excitement and creativity for the entire school year.

The simple, low-preparation activities can be used to introduce a new topic; complete a lesson plan; inspire writing; or for learning centres or early finishers. The activities may also be used to reinforce or conclude themes or celebrate special days, events or times of the year.

Getting started Make a sample

Teac he r

• Make a sample of each craft piece before you introduce it to the class. This will give you a good idea of how to prepare for each activity and how much assistance the students will need to complete each. Having a sample ready also allows for valuable discussion time, brainstorming ideas, and visualizing the end result. The quality of students’ work will be much higher when they have a visual aid to use as a reference for the steps of the process.

• Though Classroom craft–a year of activities contains a variety of craft types, there are materials that are common to many of the activities. Gather these items ahead of time so they always are always on hand. For the items that you do not have, send a copy of the Wish list on Page iii home with the students. Parents may wish to contribute these items so you don’t have to purchase them.

• Most classrooms already have the basic supplies of scissors, glue and tape. Since these supplies are usually readily available, they have been omitted from the materials list for each activity.

• Many of the activity directions ask to copy worksheets directly onto coloured paper.

Alternatively, copy the worksheet onto cardboard, cut it out and use as a template to trace onto the paper. A parent volunteer or an older child may assist with this.

1. Give each student a sheet of white paper or cardboard. Ask them to fold their paper in half (lengthwise), open it again and then lay it flat.

2. Have them use a pencil to write their name in capital letters on the bottom half of the paper. Ask them to leave a space between each letter.

3. Have the students carefully cover each letter with removable tape.

4. Ask them to use crayons or markers to draw colourful designs over and around the tape.

5. Encourage the students to choose one paint colour to cover the entire page so the colour wash stays bright.

6. When the paint is dry, ask the students to pull off the tape, refold the paper, and use it as a name card for their desk.

Grow your initial

Materials

• 2 cups potting mix for each student

1. Give each student a paper strip and a tub. Then show them how to wrap the strip around the tub and cut one end so that it overlaps the other by about 2.5 cm.

Have them lay the strip flat on their desk.

2. Have the students draw a gardening scene on the paper strip and then use other decorative materials (e.g. glitter, ribbon, scraps) to embellish it.

3. Tell them to wrap the paper strip around their tub again and glue the ends together to make a 'collar' for the tub.

4. Have the students fill their tubs halfway with moistened potting mix.

5. Ask the students to draw their first initial in the mix with their finger and sprinkle some seeds into the indentation.

6. Ask them to cover the seeds with a layer of potting mix.

7. Encourage the students to water their seeds daily and watch their initial appear!

1. Photocopy a class set of the blackline master onto the cardboard. Give each student a set of shapes to cut out.

2. Ask the students to use a crayon or marker to write their name on both sides of the rectangle. Have them glue magazine or catalogue pictures or draw pictures that tell about their family on both sides of the square. Ask them to glue or draw pictures of their favourite things to do on both sides of the triangle.

3. While the students are completing Step 2, go around the room and punch holes at the top centre of their shapes.

4. Give each student a clothes hanger and four lengths of wool. Help them to use their wool to tie their shapes to the hanger at different distances (see below).

1. Divide the class into pairs and lay sheets of butcher's paper (taller than the students) on the floor.

2. Have one student lie down on the paper in either a straight or bent pose.

3. Invite the partner to trace the student’s shape with a pencil.

4. Tell the students to change places and repeat Steps 1–3 with a second sheet of butcher's paper.

1. Photocopy a class set of the blackline master on A4 paper. Give each student a copy.

2. Have the students cut out the animal parts.

3. Ask them to place the parts they like on a sheet of coloured paper. Encourage them to experiment with the arrangement and choice of pieces, making their pet as crazy as possible.

4. When the students are happy with their arrangement, have them glue their pieces in place.

5. Ask them to decorate their animal by adding paper scraps and drawing designs with crayons, markers or oil pastels.

1. Photocopy a class set of the tree blackline master on tan or brown paper and a class set of the canopy blackline master on green paper. Give each student one of each reproducible and a sheet of white paper.

2. Have the students draw green grass at the bottom of the white paper and colour the sky blue.

3. Ask the students to cut out the tree pattern and glue it on the white paper.

4. Tell them to cut out the tree canopies and add details to them with crayons or markers or oil pastels.

5. Have the students glue the canopies to the trees.

1. Give each student a paper plate, 25 squares and 10 triangles.

2. Demonstrate how to cover the paper plate with glue, using a paintbrush.

3. Have the students place the tissue paper squares on their plate, overlapping them.

4. Ask them to glue the tissue paper triangles along the outer edge to make rays for their sun. Let the glue dry thoroughly.

5. Ask the students to use markers to add a face to their sun.

1. Locate the sheet where two or three students can work on the project at a time.

2. Tell the class they are going to draw a picture of something they like to do. Encourage them to plan and sketch their picture on drawing paper first and use bold colours so that their pictures show up well.

3. Then have the students, in pairs or small groups, use fabric markers to reproduce their picture on their designated part of the sheet.

4. Drape the sheet over a table and use it for a special reading corner. Add pillows and stuffed animals, if desired.

1. Photocopy a class set of the blackline master on A4 paper. Round off the tops of the lunch bags using scissors.

2. Give each student a set of bear pieces and a lunch bag. Ask the students to colour and add details (e.g. whiskers) to the bear pieces and then cut them out.

3. Have them glue their bear pieces onto the back of the lunch bag, open side up.

4. Encourage the students to decorate the front and back of their bag with rickrack, stickers and other decorative materials.

5. Ask the students to think of a name for their bear and write it on an index card. Encourage them to write or dictate a sentence or two about their bear and then place the index card into their bag.

6. When the students are finished, ask them to place all the bags, open side up, in a stack.

7. Ensure all index cards are to the right hand side of each bag. Punch three holes on the left side of the bags; thread ribbon or yarn through the holes and tie it in a bow to create a book.

8. Read the book to the class. Then put it in the classroom library for them to enjoy.

1. Cover the small apple on the apple blackline master on page 17 with white paper so that only the large apple shows. Photocopy a class set of the blackline on white paper or cardboard.

2. Give each student a copy of the apple to place in the bottom of a baking tin.

3. Ask the students to carefully place two or three marbles into each cup of paint, lift them out with a spoon, and place them in the pan.

4. Ask the students to tilt the pan in different directions so the marbles roll all over the paper leaving swirls of paint on the apple.

5. When the paint on the marbles is used up, ask them to put the marbles back into the same cup of paint.

6. Have the students remove their apple painting and let it dry.

7. Ask them to cut out the apple and colour the stem and leaves with crayons, markers or oil pastels.

Comic Art Materials

1. From the cardboard cut several geometric shapes (e.g. triangles, rectangles, circles and squares) in various sizes. For older students, you may wish to use more complex shapes, as indicated in the illustration.

2. Have students use the card stock templates to trace the shapes on sheets of newspaper comics and cut them out. Encourage students to cut out other shapes: they may need to create a unique picture, such as leaf shapes, diamonds or hearts.

3. Ask them to arrange their shapes in an interesting design on a piece of white paper or cardboard.

Their picture can be a summer scene or an abstract, colourful design.

4. When students are happy with their arrangement, have them glue their pieces in place.

1. Photocopy the bookworm blackline on cardboard. Cut out the pieces, and use them as templates to trace the bookworm patterns on cardboard. Give each student a set of bookworm pieces.

2. Have students cut out the pieces.

3. Ask students to glue the circles together, overlapping them slightly.

4. Ask the students to glue on wiggly eyes or pom-poms and draw a mouth.

5. Allow them to decorate each section of the bookworm with paper scraps.

Note: This activity may also be completed using wooden geometric shapes. The sections of the bookmark may also be carefully covered with clear self-adhesive plastic and cut out before overlapping.

1. Photocopy a class set of the strawberry reminder board blackline on white cardboard. Then make one additional set and cut apart the pieces to use as templates to trace the top of the strawberry on green paper or cardboard and the bottom on red paper or cardboard for each student. Give each student the strawberry on white cardboard and the two photocopied pieces.

2. Have the students cut out the red and green strawberry shapes.

3. Ask them to use a thin black marker to draw tiny ovals to look like seeds on the red paper.

4. Show the students how to glue the red bottom and the green top to the white cardboard base, overlapping them slightly. Then have them cut out the shape.

5. Ask the students to decorate the green top with glitter or sequins, if desired.

6. Laminate the strawberry shapes for the students.

Alternatively, cover with wipe-clean adhesive plastic.

7. Have the students use a wipe-off marker to write notes on their strawberry reminder board.

1. Photocopy the elephant pencil holder blackline onto cardboard. Cut apart the pieces and use them as templates to trace the outer ears and trunk on grey paper or cardboard, the inner ears on pink and the eyes on blue. Give each student a set of elephant parts, a grey strip and a tin.

2. Have the students wrap the paper strip around the tin and tape it in place.

3. Ask them to cut out the elephant parts and glue the inner ear to the outer ear.

4. Have the students use crayons, markers or oil pastels to add details such as irises to the eyes and wrinkles on the trunk.

5. Have them tape the ears to the sides of the can.

6. Tell the students to arrange the eyes and trunk on the tin and then glue them in place.

7. Encourage the students to use crayons, markers or oil pastels to add details such as mouth or eyelashes.

8. Ask the students to place the finished holder on their desk and keep pencils in it.

4. Tell the students to glue a craft stick on the back of the face to serve as a handle.

4. Show the students how to glue a craft stick on the back of one fan half and then glue the backs of the fan pieces together.

5. Have the students wrap a piece of wool or ribbon around the handle and knot it tightly. Then demonstrate to the students how to tie knots at the loose ends to keep them from fraying.

Note: Adinkra are visual symbols from Ghana and West Africa. Use this activity to support a unit about multiculturalism or values education.

1. Photocopy a class set of the Adinkra designs and the Adinkra grid, and share with the students the information that the Ashanti people of Ghana wear patterned fabrics that symbolise their thoughts and feelings. (The internet has a plentiful supply of examples!)

2. Give each student a set of designs and a grid. Ask them to colour the Adinkra symbols and then cut out those they would like to use for their 'cloth'. Encourage the students to make up their own symbols to use as well.

3. Have them glue the symbols on their grid in a pattern and then use their completed grid to decorate a book cover or other belongings.

1. Give each student two paper plates. Ask them to decorate the back of both paper plates using crayons, markers or oil pastels, sequins, stickers or other decorative materials.

1. Mix together the flour and water until the paste is smooth. It should be the consistency of glue. Add 2 tablespoons (36 g) of salt to keep the finished product from turning mouldy.

2. Give each student a balloon to blow up and then tie off. (Some students may need help with this.)

3. Ask the students to dip newspaper strips in the paste, completely soaking them, and lay them on their balloon until the balloon is completely covered. Let the papier-mâché dry thoroughly. More than one layer will be needed. Allow to dry thoroughly between layers.

4. Have the students paint their balloons. Encourage them to paint pictures of fireworks or write an appropriate message.

5 When the paint is dry, have the students glue crepe paper strips to the bottom of the balloon for streamers.

6. Ask the students to tape a long length of wool or string to the top of their balloon.

7. Hang the balloons from the ceiling at different heights around the room.

1. Photocopy the blackline on cardboard. Cut apart the pieces, and use them as templates to trace the head and small part of the beak on yellow cardboard, the large part of the beak on red paper, and the flower on any brightly coloured cardboard.

2. Give each student a set of duck pieces. Ask the students to cut out the duck, beak parts and flower.

3. Have them glue the red beak part to the duck and then add the yellow beak.

4. Ask the students to add googly eyes and draw more eyelashes with crayons, markers or oil pastels if desired.

5. Tell them to add feathers on one side of their duck.

6. Ask them to decorate the flower with glitter, paper scraps, buttons or large sequins and then glue it on the feathers.

1. Ask the students to trace their hand six times on red or orange tissue paper to make petals, and cut them out. Tissue paper tears easily so care must be taken.

2. Ask the students to use a pencil to draw a light circle in the middle of a sheet of white paper.

3. Tell them to lay down their 'petals' (overlapping them) to create a flower shape around the circle they drew.

4. Ask the students to paint starch on the petals, one at a time, brushing from the bottom to the top of the petal for best results. This must be done very carefully.

5 When the starch is almost dry, the students drop black paint in the centre of their circle. If the black paint is too transparent when it is dry, ask the students to add another layer.

6. When the paint is completely dry, have students add drops of glue in the black area and drop popcorn kernels or yellow cake sprinkles on it.

3. Show the students how to bend six pipe-cleaner halves to make legs, and demonstrate how to glue, tape or attach them them to the middle cup through holes. Let dry thoroughly if using glue.

4. Have the students cut wings and antennae out of paper or cardboard scraps and ask them to glue the wings on the top of the middle cup and the antennae on an end cup.

5. Encourage the students to use glitter or other decorative materials to add eyes and designs.

6. Have the students place a ball inside the middle cup of their 'grasshopper', and help them push one pin through each side of the cup to secure the ball.

7. Ask the students to drop their grasshopper a few centimetres onto a hard surface and watch it 'hop'!

2. Give each student a paper bag, a set of frog pieces, and two googly eyes. Have the students spongepaint one side of their bag green and yellow. After the paint is dry, ask the students to turn over their bag and paint the other side. (If you prefer, use patterned paper bags instead of having the students sponge-paint brown ones.)

3. While the bags are drying, have the students cut out the frog parts.

4. Tell them to fold the mouth in half and glue it inside the bag fold.

5. Have the students curl the pointed end around a pencil and glue the straight end of the tongue on the mouth.

6. Ask the students to glue the rest of the body parts to the frog puppet, attaching the eyes last.

4. When the paint is dry, ask them to fold the paper on the line.

5. Ask students to cut out their caterpillar about 13 mm below the thumbprints, scalloping the edges.

Crinkle the foil, smooth it out, and use it to cover the cardboard.

2. Tape a blackline to each student’s desk and a sheet of plastic wrap (large enough to cover the cardboard) over the blackline at the corners.

3. Ask the students to use brightly coloured permanent markers to colour in the blackline on the plastic wrap.

4. Have them outline the blackline with a black marker and let the ink dry thoroughly.

5. Help the students gently lift the coloured plastic wrap off their desk, place it over the foil-covered card board, and tape the corners of the plastic wrap to the back of the card stock.

Note: This activity may be completed in conjunctions with a unit about healthy foods.

Sturdy plastic wrap must be used and care must be taken when colouring the picture.

This activity is best completed by older or more capable students.

2. Have the students lay two open sheets of newspaper (one on top of the other). Then ask them to close the newspaper sheets as they would close a book.

3. Tell the students to roll the sheets into a tube and tape it closed.

4. Show them how to make hair by cutting slits at the free (unjoined) edge of their tube.

5. Ask the students to colour and cut out the tie, arms, and eyes and then glue them onto their tube to create a character.

6. Have the students glue on a pom-pom or button nose and add any other features (such as a mouth) with markers.

7. Encourage them to write a Father’s Day message on the rectangular card and sign their name.

8. Ask the students to bring the arms forward and attach their card to the arms with tape.

2. Have the students write a message to their father or male guardian on construction paper. For example, they could write 'Dear Dad, I love you beary much!' or 'You are the beary best, Dad!' Remind them to sign their name.

3. Tell them to decorate their card with ribbon, crayons markers or oil pastels.

4. Ask the students to cut out the bear.

5. Invite them to decorate their bear with googly eyes, rickrack eyebrows, a pom-pom nose and pink paper semicircles inside the ears.

6. Have the students glue their note in the box on the bear.

3. Ask them to glue googly eyes to the body and then glue the beak below the eyes.

4. Invite the students to use crayons, markers or oil pastels to add details.

5. Have them crumple several sheets of newspaper and put them in a brown paper lunch bag.

2. Give the blacklines to the students and ask them to decide which set of creepy 'toes' they want to use on their Halloween feet. Have them cut apart their chosen pieces.

3. Have each student paint two tissue boxes.

4. When the paint is dry, ask the students to use paper scraps and other materials to decorate their boxes.

Suggestions for decorations include spiders, webs, ghosts, wrinkly skin etc.

5. Have the students glue the tabs of their paper toes to the end of their boxes and then put on their Halloween 'feet'!

1. If you are using paint powder, mix it with the flour and salt in a large bowl and then add the oil and water. If you are using food colouring, add it to the water first.

2. Knead dough until it is thoroughly mixed and divide it evenly among the students. One recipe makes enough play dough for 20 students.

3. Ask the students to mold their dough into a pumpkin shape. Encourage them to think about what kind of face they want their jack-o’-lantern to have (e.g. spooky, funny or friendly). To assist the students, draw some ideas on the board.

4. Have them add legs, arms, or other characters using more play dough.

5. To set the jack-o’-lanterns, bake them in an oven at 177 ºC for 45 minutes to an hour.

2. Have each student cut out several stars.

3. Ask the students to decorate their stars with glitter and sequins.

4. Encourage them to show variety with their decorations (e.g. gluing a smaller star to a larger one).

5 Ask the students to glue their stars to the paper plates to create class wreaths. Have them overlap each star.

6. Help the students to add a red, white and green bow to the top or ribbon to the bottom of the wreath.

1. Photocopy the reindeer gift blackline on cardboard and cut out the pieces. For each student, trace the outer ears on brown paper and inner ears and cheeks on pink paper.

2. Trace each student’s hands on brown paper, and have them cut out the tracings to create antlers.

Alternatively, the students may trace their own or work as pairs. Give each student a paper bag and ask them to glue their antlers to the corners of their bag.

3. Ask the students to cut out their reindeer’s inner ears, outer ears and cheeks.

4. Have them glue each inner ear to the centre of the outer ear and glue the ears in place on the bag.

5. Ask the students to position googly eyes, pom-pom nose and pink cheeks on the bag and then glue them in place.

6. Have students draw the reindeer’s mouth and glue wool above the eyes to make a tuft of hair.

7. Ask the students to use the optional materials to attach a bow and jingle bell to the bag with a pipe-cleaner, or simply have students add these decorations with markers.

8. To make the handle, help the students to punch two holes on one side of the bag, and run a piece of cording through the two holes. Have them tie a knot, and repeat this step on the other side of the bag. Reinforce the top, if necessary, to ensure that the handles do not tear the bag.

Tissue paper wreath Materials • 30.5-cm lengths of straight wire • green tissue paper

1. Cut all tissue paper into 15 cm squares. Divide the class into groups of four or five students.

2. Give each group a piece of wire and 25–30 green and 8–10 red tissue paper squares. Have students carefully push the end of the wire through the middle of each green paper square to string the paper on the wire.

Encourage them to crumple the paper to give the wreath fullness and texture.

3. After the students have several green pieces on their wreath, have them add one or two red squares to represent berries. Tell them to keep alternating the colours.

4. Twist together the two ends of each group’s wire to create a circle, and tie a red ribbon at the top to make a bow.
