Immigration

How can we be more opened minded about immigration?

Are immigrants discriminated against in the United States? Sadly, yes despite being called the melting pot, immigrants are given the low end of the stick. This discrimination can be trace thought out the US history, and is still very true to this day. Many ethic minorities fall victim to anti-immigrant bias. This is because of negative stereotypes and because minorities come to the use looking for the American Dream. Also they are treated bad by having to get the worst jobs and the hardest jobs.

Today those of Arab Descent are experiencing an upsurges in hate crime. This started after September 11, 2001. The hate crimes included many things for example murder and beatings. The people who are hate against are only because they are Arab. That’s because the background of the hijackers responsible for attacking the World Trade Center and Pentagon where Arab. However Arabs are not the biggest groups that are hated against. According to hate crime statistics published annually by the FBI, anti-Latino hate crimes rose by almost 35% between 2003 and 2007, the latest year for which statistics are available

Former President Bill Clinton once said “The divide of race has been America's constant curse. Each new wave of immigrants gives new targets to old prejudices. Prejudice and contempt, cloaked in the pretense of religious or political conviction, are no different. They have nearly destroyed us in the past. They plague us still. They fuel the fanaticism of terror. They torment the lives of millions in fractured nations around the world. These obsessions cripple both those who are hated and, of course, those who hate, robbing both of what they might become. That quote is still very true today; the only way to stop the hate is to accepts the different in everyone.

Do you know People emigrate from one country to another for a variety of complex reasons. Some are forced to move to move, due to conflict or to escape persecution and prejudices, while others may voluntarily emigrate? Timothy Gorton Ash, is one of the most perceptive political writes of our time, once said that Canadians tend to be a bit more religious than most Europeans - though not more than the Poles or Ukrainians. Most important, their attitude to immigration and ethnic minorities is more positive than that of most Europeans.“

In 72 countries, the number of migrants decreased between 1990 and 2005. Seventeen nations accounted for 75 per cent of the increase in the migrant stock over that period -- the US gained 15 million migrants, with Germany and Spain adding more than 4 million each. Nearly half of all migrants worldwide are women. In the developed countries they are more numerous than male migrants Most of them come here for jobs in hoping to live in the land of free. Early on they came here for religious freedom, some still come here for that. There are many more reason why people come here.

“How would you feel if you were treated this way? Did you know that from 2003-2004 there was a total of 2,752,000 immigrants that came to America. From 2000-2005 there were over 3 million immigrants that came to the United States on 2 percent of them were legal. We continue to monitor U.S borders for immigrants but the numbers continue to rise.

History Mexico has a very long and rich history. Some of the most well known societies have lived in what we now call Mexico; societies such as the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Olmecs. Mexico also has some of the most noted tourist sites such as the Aztec ruins and the Ziggurats of Poncho Villa. The citizens of Mexico are of rich and proud heritage; however they are treated like inferior beings in our country

.

Mortality rates and wages In Mexico the child mortality rate is only eight years old for every 1,000 births. The infant mortality rate is 1 for every 1,000 births. Most children in Mexico are forced to work at a early age and do not receive decent payment. Those who do not work are often neglected, beaten and cannot afford food.

Respected Religions The religions that are recognized in Mexico today are Christianity and Catholicism.

Resources Most people in Mexico do not have access to clean water. In fact less than 24 percent of the people have access to clean water.

Literacy & Population Aside from the low mortality rates and poor wages Mexico has a high literacy rate. The literacy rate in Mexico is 92.8 percent. The population in Mexico is a astounding 13,096, 686 people.

Have we stopped and asked why?”

Currently in Mexico more than 33% of its people are fleeing the country. They are coming to America to seek better lives. The land in Mexico is dry and not suitable to grow crops, which makes finding food a difficult task for most. Also their home land is being ruined by pollution and garbage; combine this with the lack of fresh water and see if you can find a reason to say in that land. People from Mexico as well as other countries come to America to seek refuge from being oppressed and to have a better life; and we are trying to deport them. Why not give them citizen ship?

“Case studies” In 2005 a case study was done on the number of immigrants migrating here across the border. Local border patrol had taken a few immigrants and their families for questioning. They were asked questions such as: “why are you here?” and “Where are you from?” More than half of them answered that they were from Mexico and that they came here hoping to find a better life for them and there family. Mexico’s economy is on the verge of collapse, with only 6% of its citizens employed and the rest searching for jobs for which they will receive no pay.

Some solutions could be -Helping to re-build Mexico -Funding Mexico’s economy for a fixed period of time. If we use these solutions we could help to give these people a land to e proud of, and a land they want to live in.

“How can we help?” Currently 73% of all immigrants here in the United States are either illegal or un-employed. If we want to help fix this problem we could give citizenship to those who do not qualify or do not have a green card. We could also find or create job outlets for the one who are un-employed. The government argues that we should make all of them take test to become citizens, yet the government says that the paper work required is so vast that it would take months even years to process. On April 23rd 2008 another case study was done. His time the focus was on the Rodriguez family of Tacoma Washington. Richard Rodriguez the head of the household said he came to the U.S because he heard it was a land of understanding and a land of opportunity; but he says he is discriminated against for being a foreigner and is also denied jobs because of this fact. He also said “In Mexico it is hard to make money to feed a family of four. I could rarely find the means.” “What should the government be doing?” In order to help the immigrants here in the U.S we need to adopt a policy of understanding not discrimination. Also we need to grant citizenship to those who are deserving which are all of those who come to our country seeking to be equals, to be Americans..

Open your mind and accepts others. Without them we would not make it.
