Focus on Immigration

Page 1

There are many immigrants in the United States, and with the bad economy that we have the government feels the need to deport all of the illegal immigrants in hope to help the economy recover.

In many places of the world from which the immigrants come from, with such harsh living conditions, who are we to be able to decide who is granted or declined freedom.

Quote “America was indebted to immigration for her settlement and prosperity. That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts." James Madison

According to the Census Bureau's 2009 American Community Survey, the US immigrant population was 38,517,234, or 12.5 percent of the total US population Of the 38.5 million foreign-born populations in the United States in 2009, 50.0 percent were female. Of the 38.5 million foreign born in the United States in 2009, 40.5 percent entered the country prior to 1990, 27.9 percent between 1990 and 1999, and 31.6 percent in 2000 or later. foreign born in the United States in 2009, 48.9 percent reported their race as white alone, 8.2 percent as black or African American alone, 23.9 percent as Asian alone, and 17.5 percent as some other race; 1.7 percent reported having two or more races. In 2009, there were 32.5 million immigrants age 25 and older. Of those, 26.8 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher, while 32.3 percent lacked a high school diploma. Among the 169.4 million native-born adults age 25 and older, 28.1 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher, and only 11.4 percent did not have a high school diploma. Issues: Overcrowded population in the US, People feel immigrant should pay Taxes, immigrants taking all the Jobs for lesser pay and benefits. Causes of immigration, looking for better education, think it b a better life for their family. Better jobs, they can acquire. The biggest is freedom.

Worldwide, there is an estimated 191 million immigrants; The last 50 years has seen an almost doubling of immigration; 115 million immigrants live in developed countries; 20% (approximately 38 million) live in the US alone, making up 13% of its population; 33% of all immigrants live in Europe; 75% live in just 28 countries; Women constitute approximately half of all migrants at around 95 million; Between 1990 and 2005 o There were 36 million migrations (an average of approximately 2.4 million per year); o 33 million wound up in industrialized countries; o 75% of the increases occurred in just 17 countries; o Immigration decreased in 72 countries in the same period;

Question: Did you know that immigrants make up 13% of the US population?

Quote: Ultimately, the danger to the American way of life is not that we will be overrun by those who do not look like us or do not yet speak our language. The danger will come if we fail to recognize the humanity of [immigrants]--if we withhold from them the opportunities we take for granted, and create a servant class in our midst- Barack Obama

Extra, Extra, Immigrations all about it! History: Australia was discovered over fifty-one thousand years ago. Europeans landed came between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. And now recently immigration has grown to three hundred thousand. That has been the highest since World War two. Country info:The location Australia with the capital being Canberra. Its population size is about 22,585,004. The total size of Australia is 2,941,299 square feet. The different languages that is has is about four. British English, Italian, Greek, and Cantonese. The current generations are all at least bilingual. The Child Mortality rate is 4.86, the life expectancy is 81.2, and population living on less than $2 dollars is 27.8.

If it's broken, then fix it!

The current problem is immigration. With illegal immigrants, this will make getting a simple job in our tough economy even harder. Most illegal immigrants will get paid a whole lot less than what the average person would. So the work system would more than likely hire them than yourself. Their would be no fair competition over who'd get the job. So what is it that we could do to control this? The government. The government could guard all the boards and make sure the only ones that get in are getting in. Fine and or jail the illegal ones and tax everyone who tries to cross the boarder. And to show SSI cards and passports. Every other country jails, and fines illegal trespassers, so why is America the only one really slacking? Carelessness is the answer. We need to fix this broken system. If it's broken, then fix it.

Is America really the land of the free? Current situation: The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that, based on their analysis of the Current Population Survey administered by the Census Bureau, there are currently about 12 million illegal aliens living in the United States. These illegal aliens account for roughly 5 percent of the American workforce (Lotsofessays). With a high number like that, the government finds that it is in their hands to stop the issue now. For example, in Arizona they have passed a law that orders immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there's reason to suspect they're in the United States illegally. And also targets those who hire illegal immigrant laborers or knowingly transport them. (CNN) Not only is this law unfair to citizens that are legal, but it also makes it unconstitutional. Not to mention, if you think about it, the United States of America was built off of immigration. If it were not for immigration, America would not be the same as it is today. The culture would not be as advanced as it is now, because it is a blend of all the mixed cultures that came together once the country became united. Case study: Paulina - Long Island, New York – When Paulina was 8 years old, her parents wanted to move to the United States to give their family a brighter future. Her father had gotten a visa to enter the United States, where he overstayed, and then moved her mother there with him. Soon after, her mother’s visa expired, making both of her parents illegal citizens. This also made it difficult for them to send Paulina to the United States, who was living with her grandparents in Poland at the time. Her mother was pregnant, and that made them want to have their family together even more. With that, they told Paulina that in order for that to happen that she would have to cross the border. Not knowing what that meant, Paulina willingly crossed the border to become reunited with her family. She now speaks English fully and has a high school diploma, yet her dream is to go to college and receive a degree in physical therapy. A dream that cannot be fulfilled due to her parents’ mistakes of bringing her into the country illegally. What should the government be doing? America was based off of immigration and the government should take that into consideration when it comes to the issue of immigration. And taking that into mind, the government needs to enforce laws against discrimination. Just because they are not from this country, does not mean that they’re less than equal in comparison to all of the born citizens.

In these bad times it is better to keep your neighbor close and allow them to lean on you for support rather than push them away. Help stop the discrimination rather than support it.
