An attractive starting salary, promotion on merit, generous leave entitlements and flexible working conditions make the NSW Department of Education and Communities the first choice of employer for teachers.

A beginning four year trained permanent or temporary teacher working full time earns a starting salary of $58,250 plus superannuation and leave loading. Casual teachers with the same level of training earn between $301 and $347 per day (depending on experience) which includes a loading in lieu of leave entitlements. Salary increases are by annual increments subject to continued satisfactory performance. Our school leaders are well remunerated, with a head teacher or assistant principal earning a salary of $99,982 and a principal of a large high school earning a salary of $149,317.

Our teachers enjoy highly attractive holiday and leave conditions. In addition to four weeks annual leave, there is no requirement for teachers to attend school during student vacation periods. Permanent and temporary teachers have access to sick leave, family and carers leave, maternity and paternity leave, leave without pay and long service leave (after seven years of service). Our permanent teachers can participate in the Deferred Salary Scheme which allows them to take a year off on 80 per cent of their salary to pursue other interests such as further study, overseas travel or industry experience. Flexible working options such as permanent part-time or casual employment allow you to balance work, lifestyle and family responsibilities. If you choose to work in one of our more remote rural schools, you may be entitled to a range of additional benefits and incentives. WORKING WITH US NSW public schools deliver high quality and internationally competitive education from early childhood through to Year 12. It is a broad arena in which you can share your knowledge in a field that interests you. The Department provides school education for over 730,000 students from preschool to Year 12 throughout NSW. We have around 80,000 casual, temporary and permanent teachers working in our schools. We are an organisation that values and celebrates the achievements of its students and teachers.

Teach what you love As a teacher in NSW public schools, you will be at the forefront of innovation in curriculum delivery. You can become a qualified teacher by completing: •a double degree program such as a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Teaching, or • an integrated program (such as a Bachelor of Education) which includes both subject content studies and teacher education, or

•a n undergraduate degree and a teacher education course (such as a Graduate Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Teaching or a Master of Teaching). Early childhood and primary teaching areas The undergraduate subject content studies in your degree should be aligned to the subject(s) you wish to teach. For primary teaching you need to have a range of subjects that cover all the primary curriculum areas. Guiding students through their first years of learning is one of the most important responsibilities you can have as a teacher and one of the most rewarding.

Secondary teaching areas NSW secondary school teachers deliver one or more subjects to students from Year 7 to Year 12. These subjects are broadly grouped into eight key learning areas: creative arts, English, human society and its environment, languages, mathematics, personal development, health and physical education and science and technology. When you’re choosing what to study for an undergraduate degree and you’re not entering a Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Teaching, choose a degree that is aligned with the key learning areas you want to teach.

Specialist teaching areas With additional study, you can broaden your teaching range and expertise by teaching in a number of specialist areas including: careers advising, English as a second language, school counselling, special education, teacher librarian and vocational education and training.

OUR PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES Teacher Education Scholarships Every year the NSW Department of Education and Communities offers Teacher Education Scholarships for one to five years as part of its continuing commitment to employ top quality teachers in subject areas and locations of high staffing need. Many previous scholarship recipients have come from a range of industry backgrounds, including maths and science related fields and are now enjoying successful careers as NSW public school teachers. Many Aboriginal people, including some who were already working in schools or working with young people, have become successful scholarship holders and teachers. Each year there are 300 scholarships on offer, of which up to 80 are available specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to train as teachers in primary or any secondary subject area. The remaining scholarships are for students to train as teachers in mathematics, science (physics), English and primary or secondary special education.

Scholars receive financial assistance of up to $5,000 a year plus a one-off grant of $3,000 when you begin you teaching career with a guaranteed permanent job. Graduate Recruitment Program The NSW Department of Education and Communities’ Graduate Recruitment Program (GRP) facilitates the transition of teacher education graduates to teachers approved for casual, temporary and permanent employment in NSW public schools.

Casual.Direct and Temporary Teacher Placement Programs Teachers who have approval to teach in NSW public schools are automatically registered with Casual.Direct, the Department’s computerised casual teacher staffing system providing casual teachers to schools upon request. Teachers registered with Casual.Direct are also considered for temporary teacher placement programs with opportunities through the Teacher Relief Scheme (TRS), Rural Area Relief Scheme (RAR) and Local Area Relief Scheme (LAR) to assist schools in covering longer term temporary vacancies.

Join Our Mob - Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islanders The NSW Department of Education and Communities is committed to increasing the numbers of Aboriginal teachers in its schools and has a number of initiatives in place to achieve this goal. If you are an Aboriginal person looking for a rewarding career and the chance to make a difference to your mob, why not consider training to become a teacher? To help you train as a teacher we offer generous incentives and financial support through our Teacher Education Scholarships, which provides guaranteed employment on completion of your studies and financial

assistance including a $5,000 annual training allowance plus a one-off $3,000 grant when you commence teaching. This comes to $23,000 for a four-year teacher education course. Scholarships are available for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students who wish to become either primary or secondary teachers in any subject, including school counselling and special education.

Many universities have Indigenous Education Support Centres providing cultural, personal and academic assistance and advice to Aboriginal students.
