Why combine OneNote and LearningStyles? • People who are familiar with their own LearningStyles strengths often hunt for the ICT learning tool that lets them exploit their Learning Styles potential effectively. • Often in vain - they alternate aimlessly between various programs. • The result is confusion and frustration. • For them, OneNote is the solution – is the personal learning tool.

Why combine LearningStyles and OneNote? • People who use OneNote often do not necessarily know how to use it efficiently. • They grope their way through the various features and make choices that do not support their learning processes. • The result is confusion and frustration. • For them, LearningStyles is the solution.

Thus… • OneNote and Learning Styles are a perfect match.

LearningStyles according to Dunn and Dunn
+
The methods we use when we
•
concentrate on new and difficult information, take this information in,
•
process it into knowledge,
•
absorb and store this knowledge, and
•
retain/use this knowledge.

Which LearningStyles Elements Are Directly Addressed in OneNote? • Psychological elements: analytic versus global. • All perceptual elements. • Emotional elements: task persistence (multi tasking versus single tasking), structure. • Sociological elements: alone, pair, peer group, team, expert, variation.

Which LearningStyles Elements Are Directly Addressed in OneNote?

Psychological Elements: Analytic - Global

Analytic (1) • The OneNote interface as such meets the needs of the analytic learners. • Basic layout principle: KISS. • Analytics often being less visual picture oriented tend to prefer text to icons. • They should consider removing the icon bar(s) and stick to the drop down menus.

Analytic (2) • The notebook feature and the basic tab organization make it possible for the analytics to organize their learning materials in great detail. • Separate notebooks can be set up for e.g. separate projects, subjects, issues, or topics. • Notebooks can be broken down into pages (sections) through the tab facility. • Pages can be divided into subpages.

Analytic (3) • Loosing control? No!

Global (1) • Globals often being strongly visual picture oriented should consider using as many tool bars as possible. • Basic layout principle F&C: Fun and Color. • OneNote offers a lot of such F&C possibilities. • Not least a variety of fonts and templates – quite a few with pictures.

Global (2) • Mind maps are easily made in OneNote by means of the drawing tools. • The possibility of increasing the pages / the full screen feature make it easier to create a large mind map. • For people who have problems to manage the drawing by tools, a tablet pc will be a blessing.

Global (3) • Loosing control? No!

All Perceptual Elements

The Auditory Element (1) • OneNote supports the auditory strength by allowing users to work with audio files. • Auditory learners are often non-tactile, and they therefore have difficulties taking notes. • They can switch on the recorder during lessons, lectures, etc. and save the file in the right context afterwards.

The Auditory Element (2) • Lectures etc. can be provided with comments and annotations in writing in exactly the right context. • Also thoughts, brainwaves, reminders, etc. can be recorded and stored for further processing – “sticky quotes”. • The MS Narrator can be used for reading text from the screen.

The Visual Elements (1) • Written text and all sorts of illustrations of course support the visual strength. • So do icons and tags (annotations), and there is a wide range of them in OneNote. • Furthermore, pictures of all kinds can be inserted – from one’s own or from Microsoft's gallery.

The Visual Elements (2) • Another important feature is video files. • Like pictures and audio files, they can easily be integrated in pages and subpages. • Connecting program and camera causes no
problems.

The Visual Elements (3) • Of course all sorts of mind maps, flow charts and diagrams are of importance for visual learners. • The design of such representations in
OneNote or the import of them from other programs into OneNote is unproblematic.

The Tactual Element • The tactile learners benefit from the mere use of a computer and, thus, the mere use of OneNote. • Drawing, making audio or video recordings, scrolling, following links, etc. strongly support the learning processes of tactile learners. • A tablet pc with its possibilities of drawing and writing by hand is a strong tactual tool.
© OL – ASB/HHÅ – 03-01-2008
The Kinesthetic Element (1) • The kinesthetic learners can let OneNote automatically convert audio and video files into a format that is compatible with mp3 players and thus learn while on the move. • If they have a tablet pc at their disposal, they can support their need to learn while moving to an even greater extent.
© OL – ASB/HHÅ – 03-01-2008
The Kinesthetic Element (2) • If the kinesthetic learners want to involve themselves as individuals they can set up the notebooks they use for e.g. homework, as projects that they manage. • Such a role play lets these learners be an integrated part of the learning process and take ownership of it.

Verbalising • Via Messenger, the verbal learners can meet their need for verbalizing by interacting with peers. • Often verbal learners like to talk with themselves, and they can support this preference by using the recording tool – the “sticky quotes”. • A recording is a stronger tool than words just vanishing in the air.

This Was Just an Appetizer… • Hopefully this presentation has whetted your appetite for introducing and marketing OneNote in a new way based on Learning Styles. • LearningStyles put into words what an enormous potential OneNote has. • OneNote and LearningStyles are a perfect match. • Be a matchmaker!
