Cherry Tong Make learning English fun again! When it comes to learning English, not every student is confident enough to risk making mistakes in speaking. In our English small group, we address this issue through creating a fun and safe learning environment. For example, students learnt vocabulary related to personality through a “Speed Dating Game”, in which students wore funny masks to find their “perfect match.” Using words learnt; they practiced basic conversation in dinning while guessing utensil etiquette in the “Table Manner” session. Students are more motivated to learn and try when they are having fun and enjoying themselves!

Hello, I am Cherry, a Year 1 Program Mentor working in TWGHs Kwok Yat Wai College. I graduated from the Lingnan University majoring in Psychology. I believe education is fundamental so I would like to contribute to the education of young adults, especially socially disadvantaged students. Apart from providing English learning support, as a Program Mentor, I cherish the time spent with students, to play, to share, to learn and more importantly to grow together. It is always heartwarming to see students feeling proud of their doing and being.

During a service trip, I held activities for the poor children in Chiang Mai. I realized i felt more passion in working with young people and decided to devote myself to education. Moreover, TUF is a place for me to learn and grow. I have learnt how to lead, mentor and teach. I want to equip myself to be an influential leader and walk with my pupils in these two years.

Student Story

01 Unearth the potential

My mentee R was shy and passive in class. She told me that she had experience hosting school events and she would like to be more confident at social occasions. Therefore, I invited her to be our school representative at the 7th Anniversary dinner. The first time I invited her, she said “I can’t do it. It’s too hard and I’m very nervous.” After much encouragement, she was willing to try. During the dinner, she was able to chat with the guests confidently. She told me that it was not as horrible as she thought and she enjoyed interacting with guests. I am proud of her courage and willingness to challenge herself.

02 From Giving Up to Keeping Up

I remember seeing TM in one of her English oral lessons back in September. She struggled to understand the teacher’s questions and looked to her classmates for help. I got to know her better when she joined my small class in October. TM moved to Hong Kong from the mainland when she was in primary school and had difficulties catching up with the English curriculum here. She told me she had given up on learning English. But over time, she has become more willing to learn. She asks questions, writes down the meaning of unfamiliar words, and follows along when reading aloud. I’m proud of her for her effort and progress! By Gigi Lung

Operation Desk At our 2nd TUF Dream Pursuing Day and the 7th Anniversary Dinner the growth of our PMs was evident through the preparation and execution of the events. Their positive impact on students was apparent in the performances during the anniversary dinner. Many have challenged the value of organizing large cross-schools events. “Why not let the PMs focus on their own work at schools?” I believe these events are beneficial in teaching PMs valuable skills in teamwork and time management. The PMs are confident and capable leaders and I hope they believe that with a bit of a stretch they can reach any goal. Our PMs are also beneficiaries of the TUF program. Class Observation at CFS On March 9, over 20 teachers joined us for the TUF Dynamic Learning Experience Open Lesson at Caritas Fanling Chan Chun Ha Secondary School (CFS). The Open Lesson was delivered by our alumna Debbie Mak, and Addi Chung. CFS English Panel Head Ms Chan shared her experience of sustaining TUF mentoring elements and incorporating TUF's Dynamic Learning Experience into the curriculum of Form 1 English writing. We observed how Debbie constructed an interactive, person-oriented class to motivate and encourage students in appreciating their talents and writing their goals into a well-designed booklet. Our Partner School Community Convener, Principal Chan Chin Lee, closed the day with hopes the community could further develop this network to exchange teaching ideas and resources.

Program Mentor Training Program mentors are provided with ďŹ eld coaching covering broad topics crucial to their career and personal development. For example, they have learned classroom management with Amelia Tsang, communication skills with social worker Annie Chan, and event photography with Edmund Kong. Through class observation, mentors received feedback to improve their planning and preparation, implementation and presentation, mentor-student interaction and teaching skills, to maximize time with students. Mentors gained insight on how to better engage with students by meeting and exchanging ideas with a social worker. Mentors learned the basics of photography through a hands-on tutorial. Now, they can conďŹ dently capture special student moments. It is often said "a picture is worth ten thousand words" and one photo could inspire communities into action.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Students mentoring program The mentoring program with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has provided a unique opportunity for our students to meet professionals. A total of 26 mentees from HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School were matched with 31 devoted, professional mentors of PwC from diverse backgrounds. Meetings were held both in school and the PwC office for the students and mentors to build a rapport where they were able to comfortably share personal stories, dreams and aspirations. Many students found this is an eye-opening and rewarding experience for them. From their mentors, they learned the importance of setting goals, time management and perseverance. Thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers from PwC, we witnessed the changes and growth in our students.
