We spoke of Terrell, McKinney, Houston Heights and Alvin. My heavens, I’m a one-woman billboard for all-things historic in Texas. Where’s my pink Santa hat?!

One of the highlights of the Christmas season is Christmas in Heritage Park, on November 30 and December 6 from 5:30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 8:30 p.m. Guests are invited to step back in time and enjoy the parks historic buildings with a spectacle of lights, strolling carolers, musicians, a live nativity scene and Santa Clause. Free hot cocoa, coffee, punch, cookies and other goodies are served by volunteers dressed in period costumes to help give guests the feeling so stepping into the past. Among the historic structures, the blacksmith shop is alive with the glow of metal and the sparks of burning coal as the blacksmith demonstrates his trade, according to the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website. The general store is filled with turn of the century items and is warmed by a wood stove. A cozy one room log house is warmed by fireplace and warm treats. The chapel is alive with the sounds live Christmas music. The Atkins House has a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with hostesses serving punch and cookies. On December 6, the Christmas Festival on the Square features the lighting of the Christmas tree on the square, as well as trolley rides, a Snow Tiger exhibit and Snow slide.

In the Wilson House the children visit with Santa and enjoy hot cocoa on the porch while taking in the beautiful light display. The parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1929 fire truck is decorated with lights. Peanuts roasted on a wood stove are for sale at the servantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quarters and hot popcorn is also available at the print shop. Homes range from classic 19th century homes built by Terrell’s founding families to an updated 1950s ranch, to a home built in 2003 with classic details. Additionally, St. John the Apostle Catholic Church which has recently been restored, features lovely stained glass.

Incorporated in 1874, Terrell has glorious examples of the architectural styles that were popular in fine homes of this era: Victorian, Classical, Prairie and Colonial. Home tour guests will enjoy wonderful holiday decor, such as nativity scenes and themed Christmas trees at the Turner-Lankford House, which dates to 1880; vintage holiday ornaments at the Sullivan House, a 1950s ranch; and family momentos and antiques in the Lewis/ Fairley House that dates to 1905.Established as a depot town along the Texas and Pacific Railroad Companies’ line from Longview to California, Terrell became the headquarters of the Texas Midland Railroad, which was one of the nation’s most prosperous short-line railroads. Its president, Ned Green, made the first automobile trip in Texas. Today Terrell is a welcoming town with charming downtown shops and dining, and events such as the home tour in December and the Terrell Heritage Jubilee in the Spring. The Christmas in a Small Town Home Tour is a fund-raising event organized by The Social Science Club, established in 1894 to promote “a better acquaintance among those interested in educational attainments and to enlarge opportunities for intellectual development and service.” In that tradition, “the annual Christmas Home Tour helps raise funds for local charities, civic and educational organizations, and scholarships, while creating awareness of the historic city of Terrell,” notes tour chairwoman Donna Broder. Holiday shopping and goodies are offered at the tour’s Christmas Shoppe, housed in the Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 407 N. Rockwall, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. The tour will be held on Dec 7 from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. (tickets: $15 in advance and $20 at the door). Have Tea McKinney’s tradition of opening historic homes to the public during the holidays began in 1973, when the Heritage Guild of Collin County opened their homes to raise money to purchase the 1916 Dulaney House and Cottage and the grounds that became Chestnut Square, according to Chestnut Square’s website.

So it is especially fitting that the 40th anniversary of the Holiday Tour of Homes includes the opportunity to have a lovely, three-course tea in the Dulaney House. The tea will be served on china and guests will have the opportunity to learn about the history of The Heritage Guild and the Holiday Tour of Homes. Tea, $15, is offered on both days of the tour. The menu includes garden salad, assorted sandwiches and pasta salad, dessert pastries and hot tea and cold beverages. Space is limited and reservations are required. Vintage is not just for collectors anymore – young professionals and socialites alike are finding that classic items can give their wardrobe depth as well as novel appeal. Marilyn and Regina recall outfitting an entire women’s group for a fundraising ball with a 1950s theme. Other clients come in to incorporate one piece at a time into their wardrobe. “We specialize in the things people can wear and add to their wardrobe and enjoy without breaking the budget,” Marilyn shares. And that includes their exquisite collection of furs. “Like clothing, furs had a Golden Age, they were once made here in America,” Marilyn shares. “Every step in making a fine coat was hand work. Noted designers like Oleg Cassini, Christian Dior, Fendi and Galanos produced wonderful coats and wraps. We have an original Hattie Carnegie designed in the 1930s as well as a Fendi sable coat.” Working with The Cat’s Meow in Midland, The Chic Cherie also provides vintage clothing and hats for the Silver Screen and for television programs such as Downton Abbey. Marilyn and Regina’s shop in High Street Antiques in Plano is meticulously arranged by color and stocked with the kind of iconic gowns, dresses and suits made famous by such classic American beauties as Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. Presenting the best in vintage fashions from the 1930s – 1960s, the shop is a “walking encyclopedia of Dallas fashion history,” notes Marilyn, a history buff who

enjoys sharing the stories behind the styles. The legendary Dallas dress shops and Dallas department stores where Dallas fashion history was made, are all represented. For example, one dress featured a label from the Orchid Shop, with its slogan “Clothes for the Women with Men on their Minds.” “Many of our pieces are from fur shops and wonderful dress stores in Dallas that are gone now but they live on at The Chic Cherie in the labels of these beautiful pieces,” says Marilyn. There is a fabulous bejewelled Oscar de la Renta gown that the designer created for Neiman Marcus, an Eisenberg suit, sumptuous furs, and classic handbags including some from such designers as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Judith Leiber. The selection also features hats and hand-made fur accessories and fascinators. Regina is a professional seamstress who can create custom gowns and accessories using vintage elements, as well as altering anything in the shop to fit the client perfectly. She shares that after the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the demand for custom fascinators increased markedly. A fascinator is a headpiece that is a chic alternative to a hat that when the outfit calls for something lighter. The pieces are attached to a clip or headband, and Regina enjoys working with clients to customize a fascinator using elements from a vintage dress, suit or gown. She can also create pieces from a photograph. When it comes to gowns, The Chic Cherie has one of the largest selections of vintage prom dresses in the area, as well as vintage pageant gowns, and Mother of the Bride gowns and dresses. Vintage costume jewelry includes rare pieces such as a Civil War-era cameo brooch and among the oldest bags was an alligator bag with silver accents that dates to 1902. Marilyn and Regina’s careful organization and maintenance of the collection makes it so easy to pop in and find exactly what you are looking for. The Dallas Woman’s Forum Presents

A French Fortnight

Once again the Dallas Woman’s Forum will open their stately home, The Alexander Mansion, for all to enjoy during the holidays. This year The Woman’s Forum goes to France! A French Fortnight 6th Annual Holiday Celebration begins the festivities on December 5-8 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Drawing upon the idea of a lovely French girl who introduces her handsome American fiance to her family on Christmas Eve, the 1904 Alexander Mansion will be transformed into the setting for this charming story as it might have transpired in the days before World War I. The grand foyer will become a winter wonderland of sparkling trees in the French Alps, and the adjoining rooms will be decorated for the family celebration of a Christmas Eve Reveillon dinner. Tours will be given on the half-hour. Upstairs guests can browse unique offerings in the gift boutique and lunch will be served daily in the Bistro Cafe with classic French fare such as French onion soup and homemade creme brulee. An Elegant Symbol of Tea’s Prestige Tea caddies are a useful and charming accessory that date back to an era of tea history when tea was an expensive luxury. These storage receptacles historically were lovely, ornate and proudly displayed, notes Jean Williams of McKinney’s Antique House. Their elegance reflects how much tea was cherished in the early days, when tea was first brought over to Europe and England from China in the 1700s and carried a heavy price tag. Antique House, located off the Square on Louisiana Street, has an exceptionally beautiful collection of wooden and silver antique tea caddies, most of which were purchased in England. The earliest tea caddies were made of Chinese porcelain and resembled the ginger jar. Originally called tea canisters, they came to be called tea caddies after 1800. Wood, brass, copper, pewter and silver were used later to make tea caddies, with wood eventually becoming the most popular material. Mahogany and rosewood were the most frequently used. Antique House’s fine collection is representative of the Georgian-era caddies that were often elaborately decorated with inlays, designs and knobs. One such tea caddy in Antique House’s collection features a domed lid and intricate marquetry work that never fails to catch the eye of visitors. The wooden caddies are lidded boxes that can feature elaborate shapes. Jean’s favorite is a Rosewood tea chest with an unusual silhouette that seems reminiscent of the outline of the classic tea houses found in China . It includes two compartments for tea storage, and a center circle occupied by a lovely Blue Willow porcelain bowl. “Tea caddies have storage areas for two types of tea – black and green, and a center opening for a bowl,” Jean notes. “Typically they included a lock “ Jean shares. “Tea caddies were found in the most affluent homes, and the owners locked them to keep the tea from the servants.” Tea was so valuable that servants were known to help themselves to the tea and to sell it.

One of the most unusual tea caddies in Antique House’s collection is a black lacquer caddy from Japan painted with a lovely scene. The silver plated and sterling caddies in the collection feature interesting shapes and several are engraved with monograms. As tea became less expensive later in the 19th century, caddies and tea chests became less popular. Jean shares that another factor in tea caddies’ declining popularity in the United States was the growing popularity of coffee. “Starting in the 1920s, coffee was more popular here,” she says. “Coffee tables became more popular than the tea table.” Tea caddies, however, remain popular today as sophisticated home accessories. “People use them to decorate, and decorators like them,” Jean notes. “If you look at home magazines you see them displayed on a table with a tea service or on a bookcase or coffee table as an accent piece.”

Office party behavior is of utmost importance in keeping your professional reputation intact. While the party is a more relaxed time and you are not technically “on the clock”, it is wise to consider it an extension of your job. Your behavior will be remembered, often in some cases, for years to come! Briefly, I see two main areas that require consideration. First, what you wear. Choose wisely; save the risqué’ for a different occasion. Second, don’t overindulge on alcohol. Too much alcohol can cause you to compromise your speech and behavior, often irreparably damaging your reputation. Have a good time, but do so responsibly. My best wishes to everyone for happy, blessed, and joyfilled holidays.

With the holidays upon us, I have a question about gift giving and receiving. If someone gives me a gift, especially one that is unexpected, am I obligated to give them a gift in return? You are not. The definition of a gift is something that is transferred to another without compensation. Accept the gift graciously and thank them for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Don’t forget to follow up with a written thankyou note. I am invited to several parties and would like to take a small host/hostess gift. Do you have any suggestions as to what would be appropriate? When I know the person well, I like to take something that is personal like a book, a special tea, a box of chocolates, an addition to a collection, or something of that nature. If you take food or wine, make sure you let your host know that is to be enjoyed at a later date so it does not interfere with the planned menu. Also, flowers are not an ideal hostess gift. Flowers require the host to leave their guests to find a vase, arrange flowers, and work them into the decor. It’s that time of year for the annual holiday office party. A P lace Where Teacups and Quilts Inspire By Michelle Lindsey

Tea and quilts go hand in hand, each offering warmth, comfort and character. There’s no better place to experience that warmth, comfort and character than Tea Time Quilting, located in The Heights in Houston. “We chose this location for our quilt shop because we already had a business here,” said owner, Jana Snider. “We have been on this corner for over 42 years with our flower shop, Jana’s Flowers.” Tea Time Quilting opened its doors in January 2003, beginning as a vendor at quilt shows and expos. This helped Tea Time Quilting integrate itself into hearts of Houston area quilters. “We support the local quilt guilds by being vendors at their shows,” she adds. “We have also been a vendor at the International Quilt Festival for the past 10 years. It is such a wonderful show!! We have the privilege of meeting very talented quilters from around the world including the United States, Japan, Iceland, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Holland, England, Spain, France, Germany, Canada, and so many more.” Serving Houston is a family tradition for Jana. “My husband and I opened Jana’s Flowers in 1971. When our daughters were born they became a part of it too. They have worked at the flower shop their entire lives,” she says. Quilting was a gift shared with Jana by the women who influenced her life from a young age. “When I was about 4-5 years old, I can remember my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother doing hand quilting around one of the old fashioned quilting frames that was suspended from the ceiling,” she recalls. “They would put a bucket of coals under the frame to keep their feet and legs warm while I was wrapped up in a quilt. They let me sit at one end and even gave me a needle and thread and let me do some quilting. Recently I remarked to my mom that they probably took my stitches out later and did not tell me. She did not deny it, so who knows.” Jana made her first quilt in 1972 and it was a staple for family camping trips, until their truck was stolen with the quilt inside in 1975. To this day, Jana still misses that quilt! Running a

flower shop and raising two girls kept her busy, so she didn’t make another quilt until 2000, after a cousin called to tell her about her new hobby. Their conversations inspired her to revisit quilting. This renewed interest was further fed by annual trips to the International Quilt Festival with family and friends. In 2002, with the support of her family, Jana decided to turn what she loved into a way grow and nurture that interest in others. “One of the hardest things to do was come up with a name for my business,” Jana said. “I thought of all kinds of names, but nothing that I liked. I wanted my name to be one that meant something to me.” Jana said a childhood memory was the trigger to finding a name for the store. “I have had a cup and saucer collection since I was 7 yrs. old. I now have over 100 of them. When I was 7 and living in Phoenix, AZ, our landlady asked my mother if I had a collection. Mom said no, and our landlady, a sweet elderly woman from Denmark asked if she could give me a cup and saucer to start my collection!! Jana said that despite all the teacups in her collection, the first one still remains the favorite today and continues to evoke special memories of her childhood. “Our landlady Mrs. Maroney used to invite me in to her house and we would sit and have tea with her finest china cups and fresh homemade Danish rolls. I loved those times and they are still some of my most favorite memories of my childhood!!” Today, Tea Time Quilting continues that tradition of making memories. Jana and her daughters work sideby-side helping customers with all of their quilting needs. Hello readers! This issue we will be moving from the lovely island of Taiwan to mainland China to explore another class of teas known as Pu’erh. You may have heard of this mysterious tea that has been known for hundreds of years as a soothing, healing, and cleansing tea. It also happens to be an incredibly tasty and enjoyable tea, as well!

Some qualities to look for in a sheng pu-erh are a nice, pleasing aroma in the dry leaf, a woody, complex, earthy aroma in the wet leaf, and an enjoyable taste. It really is up to you whether or not you “resonate” with this tea.

Today we will briefly discuss one of the two types of pu’erh; the raw or “sheng” pu’erh. This tea is made from the large leaf tea plants in Yunnan, China. The best comes from the older trees; some are hundreds, up to over a thousand years old. This tea is much like a green tea, in terms of minimal processing; however unlike a green tea, will improve with aging. A quality sheng pu-erh is best after 20-30 years!

To best learn about pu-erh is to buy small quantities from a trusted source, take their suggestions, and experiment! You do not necessarily need a bunch of tools (although these help) and experience, just some patience and practice. After just a few attempts, you will find you can make cup after cup of delicious tea from a very small amount. Puerh yields more liquid tea per ounce than any other type, even oolongs!

Pu’erh is often pressed into cakes or other shapes. A young sheng pu-erh will taste very lively; depending on quality, time of harvest, age of trees, and other factors. It can also be very complex, sweet, bittersweet, full flavored, and have a great mouth feel and throat feel. The Chinese swear by its health properties. While some studies seem to validate some of these claims, it is certainly easy to feel how it aids in digestion, for one thing. December 7 promises to be an exciting day in Baytown, Texas. For the 16th consecutive year, the Christmas on Texas Avenue festival will take place in historic Goose Creek Baytown on West Texas Avenue between Commerce and Jones Streets.

Visitors will enjoy festivities that include vendors, many activities for kids, train rides, a variety of food to tempt your palette, as well as the hospitality of area businesses along Texas Avenue, the Historical Museum, and the work of over thirty local Baytown artists at the Art Center of Baytown. This year as in the last, Christmas on Texas Avenue begins at 10 a.m. “We hope to have 20,000 visitors this year,” Chairman Gordon Ginzel states. “Our ultimate goal is to go from Alexander Drive all the way down to Market Street, and have the entire Texas Avenue involved.” There’s really not an established deadline for vendors and artists who wish to participate. Well, that’s not technically correct. There is one: “The day before,” Ginzel deadpans, meaning one can still fill out an application the day before the festival. Vendors with unique products are particularly encouraged to apply. All area scouts, churches, clubs, bands and social groups are invited to show their holiday spirit with a parade entry which will be held on the Friday night before the festival. If your company, organization, or church group would like to participate in the annual Baytown Christmas Parade, contact Baytown Parks and Recreation at 281-420-6597. The Festival will also include a callout to artists. All area professional and student artists are invited to enter their masterpieces in the 47th Annual Art Show and Exhibition on Friday, December 6, at the Baytown Community Center located

at 2407 Market Street. Artwork will be accepted Nov 12-19, and will be judged on November 30. Art Show categories now include photography, drawing, graphics, sculpture, quilt art, and paintings in all media. For this year’s festival, there will be contests with cash prizes for vendors who have the best holidaydecorated booths and best Christmas costumes. As in the past there will be Santa and Mrs. Claus, so bring your cameras and save your own memories of this magical event. While Christmas carolers will fill the air with song, and ensembles entertain throughout the day; the air force mini jet takes kids for rides and Casey the Crime Dog, provided by the Baytown Police Department, roams Texas Avenue in its remote-controlled car. The Art League of Baytown will assist kids of all ages on how to paint ornaments as well as using chalk to express themselves on the sidewalk out front of the Art Center of Baytown. There will certainly be enough activities and events to keep everyone entertained. “This has been an exciting experience,” Ginzel says. “ I am very gratified to find that this spirit is alive and well. I found an amazing group of people that jumped in to make this festival a great success. Thanks to them all!” The Art League of Baytown provided most of the volunteers and other resources. “This group was completely dedicated to the work that seemed to grow every week,” Ginzel explains. “I was totally impressed with the cordiality of this group as it was an enormous commitment.” But as any art league member might respond, “We have made a commitment to the City of Baytown to help promote the visual and performing arts in this historic section of our community.” As Ginzel says, “It’s all about the community coming together to celebrate with their neighbors and out-of-town company that comes to visit our beloved Baytown.” Merry Christmas Y’all!

Holiday Breads The Holiday season brings quiet evenings by the fireplace and hot tea to share with family and friends. My favorite accompaniment to tea at this time of year is aromatic baked breads with flavors reflective of the season, such as cranberry and cinnamon. But since I’m the kind of girl who likes to have her tea and eat it too, I often use tea as an ingredient in my holiday baking.

Many of the spices traditionally used in holiday baking, such as nutmeg and cardamom which are often used in chais, are complimentary to tea. Likewise, green teas pair well with orange and lemon baked goods, and any flavored black tea will leave your guests wondering what that special ingredient was in your scones. You can use brewed tea for the liquid in your recipe, or use tea leaves directly in the batter. I often infuse the milk called for in my bread recipes with my favorite blends of tea. The infused liquid in a recipe permeates the entire bread for a wonderfully blended taste. But remember to double the amount of tea and not the amount of steeping time, if you want stronger tea to use in your recipe. Try using tea as an ingredient in your holiday baking. The many varieties of tea, whether flowery, earthy, or spicy, can contribute subtle aromas and delicate flavors to your Holiday breads.

2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups white-whole wheat flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup chilled, unsalted butter 1 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped* 1 cup cold chai-spiced milk, see note 1/3 cup maple syrup For topping: 2 tablespoons maple syrup White sanding sugar 1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. In a large bowl, combine the flours, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in walnuts.

2. In a separate bowl, combine the chai-spiced milk and maple syrup. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until the mixture comes together. 3. Flour your work surface and scoop the dough out of the bowl onto the floured surface. Divide the dough in half. Working with one half at a time, gently pat the dough into a circle about 3/4 -inch thick. Transfer the circle to a parchmentlined or lightly greased baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining half of the dough, placing it on a separate pan. 4. Cut the dough circle into eight wedges like a pie. Gently separate the wedges so that they are spaced about an inch apart at the edges. Pierce the tops of the scones with the tines of a fork, and brush them with maple syrup. Sprinkle them with sanding sugar. 5. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re golden brown. Serve with your favorite jam or a seasonal spread such as pumpkin butter, apple or maple butter.

*When I toast small amounts of nuts, I prefer to do it on the stove-top. Do not chop the walnut halves before toasting. Heat walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Stir constantly to ensure even toasting. Remove walnuts to a plate to cool.

That is why everyone was excited for Annie’s grand opening last year in bustling Alvin, Texas. Owner Cissy Andrews has an enthusiasm for family recipes and good cooking. A young and energetic shop keeper that has lived in Alvin most of her life, Cissy offers freshly made items that have locals coming by for excellent lunches and parties. TT: Congrats, Who is Annie? Cissy: There are two Annie’s in my life. I named the tea room & cafe after my daughter Ann Elizabeth Mills. She was named after my grandmother Ann Frances Andrews from Sicily. Since we use her recipes, I think of her. Baby Annie is the inspiration for opening tea room hours 11 a.m.-3p.m. TT: What is important to you in the kitchen? Cissy: Freshness is key in our cooking, we look for the best ingredients and start from there. Thankfully we have Froberg’s Farm close by to supply local produce and Doreck & Son’s on FM646 butchers the best beef in town. A creamery in Beaumont delivers fantastic

dairy for us on Saturdays too. We do not store-buy any of our cakes or pie crusts. Everything is made from scratch ensuring old-fashion flavors, it’s the way my grandmother cooked. TT: Your tea room & cafe is located inside the Alvin Antique Center, do patrons enjoy this? Cissy: Sure, thankfully we have established our own clientele who love our burgers and soups. However, antique shoppers enjoy snacks or brunch. Our mall offers estate sales and live auctions on weekends, creating large crowds that enjoy a light meal during their stay. They can come in for a cup of coffee in the morning, then stop back for lunch and decide to have dessert before they leave the mall, it’s fun to see them again and again. TT: The shop is inviting, do they book parties? Cissy: Absolutely, from the old crystal glass to delicate lace, many antique shoppers are looking for vintage items for their wedding or themed party. I studied culinary arts at ACC, learning the business of the restaurant industry, and look forward to coming in every day.

TT: It’s fun to be at the initial stages of a business, did you create a large menu? Cissy: Not really, We have a small set menu and daily boards that change seasonally. I like to make everything creatively, keeping the desserts off-menu since we keep the flour flying and our sweets are always different, always good. At home, I enjoy cooking too, it doesn’t stop at work. Cooking is great therapy for daily stresses, I really enjoy it, but cleaning up is a different story.

My dad is a great cook, that’s why the cafe was added. I wanted to showcase our home-made burger creations, which are local sirloin beauties steamed to stay juicy. We have THE BOMB burger, FAT DADDY, THE ULTIMATE and more. Fresh tuna and salads complete the menu.

TT: What’s the most popular items? Cissy: Mastering our recipes, we’ve added a spin on popular tea room fare. Our daily quiches with fresh fruit and our soup combos sell quickly. We cook in small batches and enjoy when popular items sell out. It takes only a few minutes to whip up a fresh batch of chicken salad or a chocolate cake. The key is having a stocked pantry and keeping it simple. The best seller is our classic sampler which includes a cup of soup, sandwich, chips and dessert for $11.95.

TT: Very true, thank goodness for your staff. What item do you like to make most? Cissy: I like soups, I like playing with a good chicken stock: Broccoli-cheese, zuppa tuscana, tomato basil ... there is not a specific soup, I’m proud of them all. For my zuppa toscana (sausage, cream, kale) I start with fresh sausage from Froberg’s Farm, great stuff. TT: Beside your female patrons, who comes to Annie’s for lunch? Cissy: Everyone... we get men’s group, teenagers, and professionals, of course it depends on the day of the week. Local schools and clinics are good supporters as well as visitors from across the state. Everyone is welcomed to experience Annie’s Tea Room & Cafe.

Hello Tea in TexasThe Heritage Tea and Victorian Fashion Show held at Sandstone Street Bed and Breakfast in Llano,Texas was a sell out crowd. Guests enjoyed tea foods of Tarragon Chicken Salad filled bread cups, Cucumber-Radish on Butter Round Bread, Egg Salad on White and Ham Roulade, Pumpkin Bread Bites with Pecan Struesel, Lemon Curd filled tea cakes, and Strawberry Mousse filled chocolate cups, CranberryOrange Scones and Apple-Cinnamon Scones. Music for the event was provided by violinists Keenan Fletcher and Aileen Horan; this event was part of the Heritage Days celebration in Llano. The Fashion Show was moderated by the Texas Victorian Lady, J’Nean Henderson and hosted by Virginia and Jack Walker.

Reflecting on the heroism and sacrifices of American service members is our way of preventing their sacrifices from being in vain. According to the Department of Defense, as of 31 January 2013, there were 1,429,995 people on active duty in the armed forces, with an additional 850,880 people in the seven reserve components. The Wounded Warrior Project reports that as of August 2013, there were more than 35,000 wounded service members from Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn.

There are a variety of programs, organizations and communities dedicated to supporting these service members and their families. Organizations like Quilts of Valor provided donated quilts to service members. While other programs, such as Army Baby Quilt Project support families of military. For service members and their families, these small gestures of kindness and support can be a symbol of hope and healing in a time of crisis. Staff Sgt. Oliver Hughes was injured in April 2011. His wife, Megan, can still recall when she learned he was listed in very “serious condition” as most of the injuries sustained were to his legs. It would be a long journey of recovery and those first few days and weeks were filled with emotion. His recovery was remarkable despite losing a leg and enduring many surgeries on his lower extremities. His spirits remained high. He will claim that his wife and their four children were his source of strength and hope though she would argue that. She knew it was the man that she married who would fight this new battle for the chance to be with his family. “My husband is my hero, and so are his comrades in arms. They saved him and sent him home to me. For that I am forever grateful,” she said just 6 days after that life-altering day. Both would credit their support team of family, friends, and even strangers they met along the journey for helping them face the unknown road ahead. “One of the biggest comforts during his two months of inpatient stay, was cuddling under a handmade quilt instead of an extra hospital or hotel blanket,” she says as she recalls those first weeks. Laying there under a quilt while he slept, she reflected on the second chance their family has been given. It gave her hope and strength to face the challenges ahead.

Megan was by his side every day and the children as much as school and schedules would allow. Many times throughout his recovery, in the hospital and at home, Staff Sgt. Hughes could be seen draped with one of the colorful quilts given by friends and organizations. It was a common sight to see him with any variation of the four kids tucked under a quilt, reading a book, watching television or deep in conversation about the children’s daily activities. Even his older children were not shy about being seen snuggling as a family under a quilt, if room could be found among the little ones who often used Dad as a table for their toys. The Hughes home two years later is a reminder of those gifts of comfort as the quilts lay draped over a sofa or bed in exchange for a kayak or pair of hiking boots. Today the family rarely stops moving, always looking for a new adventure. But occasionally they can still be found lying among the quilts with the addition of a dog or two, or laughing under a blanket fort, just thankful to be together.

AT THE READY FOR A CHRISTMAS TEA Why not use this wonderful and hectic season to begin cultivating this style of teatime? You can make your preparations before the date, or even the guest list, is set. Make a tea table part of your holiday decorations. Gather a tea pot, creamer and sugar bowl and arrange them on a tray where they will be happily awaiting the whistling kettle. Don’t let it bother you if you don’t happen to own a Christmas tea service. With the popularity of vintage style today your set certainly doesn’t have to match. Use whatever you have. Add some red and green, or silver and gold, by lining your tray with a pretty tea towel or doily. A tiny vase with an evergreen sprig and a bloom or two from your garden will bring the setting to life! It is especially easy to find tea treats at this time of year. Grocery stores, department stores and even drug stores are overflowing with specialty items that are perfect accompaniments to a hot cup of tea. Pick up a few things to have on hand and any time you bake holiday goodies, bag a few extras for your freezer. You will also find many holiday tea blends available. If you would like to add sandwiches to your offerings use cookie cutters to make them festive. It might be fun to choose a particular symbol such as a star or tree and repeat it in cookies, candies, sandwiches and even napkins. A small ornament in that same shape, often inexpensively available by the dozen, could be used as a napkin ring and a party favor.
