Raise Your Cups! Merry Christmas Friends, Sometimes it's easy to take for granted how much fun there is in Texas. Sure, it's harder and harder to find places that haven't been explored, but it's also become easier to forget places that we've already been. That's exactly what my husband and I discovered when re-exploring local antique shops this season, and lucky for you, pictures say a million words. The adventure of finding restored pieces rescued from homes, attics and barns is thrilling.
It is art that speaks to us, history that wishes to be preserved in our home. We shall do you justice! In case checking antiques isn't cool enough, winter home tours around Texas showcase precious antique gems in their full glory. It's candy for the eyes, fruit cake for the soul.

Antiques Abound at
Canton’s
First Monday Photos and Editorial by Stephanie Miller
Shoppers who love antiques find endless possibilities in the 450-acre treasure trove that is Canton’s First Monday.
Held the weekend before the first Monday of the month in this convenient East Texas destination, First Monday presents a vast assortment of items, ranging from collectibles to home decor. One can also find art, jewelry, clothing, memorabilia, crafts and quilts. Tea in Texas found sought-after antiques, such as Staffordshire figures, Wedgewood china, vintage quilts and needlework, and antique sewing machines and clocks on a visit to First Monday in the Fall. We always begin our antique expedition at the Canton Civic Center and then explore the grounds for more. We found several examples of the china and silver in the specific patterns we were looking for, a wonderful range of quilts to choose from, and many other antiques to give us inspiration for new collections. What will you find in Canton? First Monday is on October 30–November 2 and November 27–30.

Historic Homes
here a Southerner’s Heart is:
Great Houses of the South by Stephanie Miller The celebrated houses of the South are like a brick-and-mortar tribute to ideals the South holds dear. The region’s great historic homes represent culture and refinement, education, family, reverence for nature, and sometimes a nod to theatricality or eccentricity.
“What makes a great house is the vibrancy of the story the house tells: the story of the people who commissioned it, the architect who designed it, the families who lived in it and saved and the people who continue to visit," Ossman said. “Historic preservation is the way these stories are passed down.”
Romanticized and idolized, the Southern home is often treated as a member of the family. Sometimes these houses even have names, always they have stories and fond memories, and, without fail, they occupy a special place in a Southerner’s heart.
Speaking at the Historic New Orleans Collection’s Antiques Forum last Summer, Ossman showed images of many iconic homes. They ranged from Thomas Jefferson’s acclaimed Monticello, George Washington’s picturesque Mount Vernon, which she said is the most recognized home in the United States; Louisiana’s gracious Oak Alley Plantation, which she said looks “exactly like one would expect” a Southern home to look; the glorious Drayton Hall in South Carolina, New Orleans ’distinctive Gallier House and Hermann-Grima as examples of how stately homes related to bustling cities, and Natchez’s
In her book “Great Houses of the South,” Laurie Ossman, director of Museum Affairs with the Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island, documents some of the South’s most remarkable architectural treasures, in an effort to encourage preservation of these sometimes-fragile gems.

imposing Stanton Hall as an example of the rural form used in a city setting to convey status, wealth and prestige. Many splendid homes were built near rivers, the source of commerce, as in the case of Louisiana Plantation homes along the Mississippi River, Shirley Plantation alongside the James River in South Carolina, and the Ashley River’s Drayton Hall. Drayton Hall, located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, is the oldest surviving example of Georgian Palladian architecture in the United States. John Drayton began its construction in 1738 and seven generations lived there until the home was sold to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1974. Drayton Hall, used by both Colonial and British forces as a staging ground, is the only plantation on the Ashley River to survive intact, and remains remarkably close to its original condition. A fivepart Palladian form with connecting buildings, Drayton Hall is wonderfully classical. Its majestic and expansive grounds, graced with moss-laden oak trees reflected in the pond, give it a poetic beauty. Shirley Plantation is an example of a great house that conveys authority through architectural form and mass, Ossmann said, noting that it has similarities in scale to the Governor’s House in Williamsburg.
Ossman said the refined architecture of the early great homes was used to “colonize the wilderness,” as in the case of Farmington, a Louisville, Kentucky, Federal-style residence that was designed from a sketch of a home designed by Thomas Jefferson. The Hermann-Grima House in New Orleans’ Vieux Carre was inspired by Colonial homes in Virginia and Philadelphia, but its second floor gallery shows the influence of Caribbean culture, and adaptation to New Orleans’ climate. The Founding Fathers recognized the opportunity the Colonial period presented to shape the nation’s image through architecture. Thomas Jefferson looked for architectural inspiration in Europe and “what an American aristocrat would be like and what that lifestyle was going to be. He used architecture to shape a national character.” L o n g w o o d in Natchez, Mississippi, is an example of whimsy and a touch of eccentricity. Dr. Haller Nutt commenced building this opulent, 32-room octagonal mansion with design by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan in 1859, and contracted workmen from Philadelphia to build it, Ossman said. When the Civil War began, Dr. Nutt’s cotton and land were seized, and construction stopped. One would never guess it from the gracious and stately exterior, but the Staton Hall by NPRO Studio

upper floors were never finished. For decades, the family lived in the basement. Descendants remained in the home until the 1970s, when the property was acquired by the Natchez Pilgrimage Garden Club. Southerners have always held a gracious home in high esteem. Proud owners of plantation homes and great houses took the task of furnishing and decorating very seriously, recognizing how the home defined their image. Families traveled to Europe to acquire furniture and commission paintings to display culture and refinement, grand libraries were built to house impressive book collections to display knowledge. The house is a stage, and the South values a sense of theatricality. As new areas of the country were developed in the 1900s, a beautifully designed, grand home was an important marketing tool for developers. Ca’ d’Zan, a Mediterranean Revival Residence in Sarasota Florida, built by John Ringling, circus owner, developer and art collector, was one such home that represented the good life. The grand 36,000-square foot mansion is an extravagant testatment to the American Dream. It was inspired by the Ringlings' European travels and specifically Venice’s Ducal Palace, Grunwald Hotel and Ca d’Oro. While the South is known for “honoring tradition,” Ossman said today’s great homes show how the region honors change within that tradition, as in the case of Longue Vue in Metairie, Louisiana. A Classical Revival mansion situated on eight acres of glorious gardens, Longue Vue is home to a stunning modern art collection housed alongside American and English antiques, antique pottery, and French and Oriental carpets. Great houses often have beautiful sentiment associated with them, such as Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, where decorative elements paid a charming tribute to the preferences of his late wife, Rachel.

Stories like these are what give these great homes their life, and their essence, and they are surely part of the reason a great house can touch our hearts and have such power over us. “The Great Houses are those that challenge us to tell the stories, and the challenge is to find our own stories for the next generation,” Ossman said.

Terrell Invites You to
Christmas
in a Small Town Some of Terrell’s loveliest historic homes, decorated for the holidays, are featured in the December 6 “Christmas in a Small Town” tour. Terrell, a city just outside of Dallas that was incorporated in 1874, has lovely examples of the architectural styles that were popular in fine homes of this era: Victorian, Classical, Prairie and Colonial. Established as a depot town along the Texas and Pacific Railroad Companies’ line from Longview to California, Terrell became the headquarters of the Texas Midland Railroad, which was one of the nation’s most prosperous short-line railroads. Its president, Ned Green, made the first automobile trip in Texas. Today, Terrell is a welcoming town with charming downtown shops and dining, and events such as the home tour in December and the Terrell Heritage Jubilee in the Spring. The Christmas in a Small Town Home Tour is a fundraising event organized by The Social Science Club, established in 1894 to promote “a better acquaintance among those interested in educational attainments and to enlarge opportunities for intellectual development and service”. In that tradition, the annual Christmas Home Tour helps raise funds for local charities, civic and educational organizations, and scholarships, while creating awareness of the historic city of Terrell. The tour will be held on December 6 from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. (tickets: $15 in advance and $20 at the door). For more information, visit www.sscofterrell.com. Winter 2014 | www.teaintexas.com

A three- course menu created by Becky Watts, included savory butternut soup, chive and cheddar scone, and an heirloom tomato salad followed by tea sandwiches featuring turkey pate on pumpernickel, cucumber and dill cream cheese on white, and an apple sandwich with cinnamon and pecans on raisin bread. The dessert course offered a honey lavender cupcake, fruit tartlet, chocolate tea bread with orange creme, and a dark chocolate dipped orange candy. Margie Wilkov of Tea and Chocolate provided a selection of wonderful specialty teas that complimented the menu and entertained the guests with stories along with facts about the enjoyment of tea. Mary Lou Smith and Raynell Kuehler printed lovely place cards and menus for each guest who also received a parting favor to remember this very special event!

Cast of Wicked Has Tea in Liverpool
The cast of the wildly popular musical “Wicked” recently paid a visit to our friends at Tea Parlour in Liverpool to partake in that quitessentially British pastime – afternoon tea. “This good-looking group apparently stops for afternoon tea at every city they visit on the UK tour, so it was lovely that Tea Parlour was their top choice in Liverpool to continue the tradition,” Tea Parlour reports. What woman doesn’t like to make that grand entrance and be showered with compliments such as, “Darling where did you get that stunning outfit?” The Chic Cherie Boutique at High Street loves helping customers feel like stars in a classic attire, accompanied by timeless accessories, and just the right costume jewelry. “My customers tell me how great vintage makes them look and feel,” said Chic Cherie Co-Owner Marilyn Harris. “I love to hear about their experiences in these outfits.” One of Marilyn’s clients scored her new job hands-down when she was interviewed in an impeccable 1940s suit. “They couldn’t take their eyes off of her,” Marilyn effuses. Another client, a trial lawyer, dazzles with confidence in the courtroom wearing vintage dresses and suits. An out-of-town architect flies in to shop at Chic Cherie. She makes all her presentations in vintage. “The way she looks and feels gives her great confidence,” Marilyn says. Shoppers can select a gown that once sold for hundreds or thousands, at a fraction of the original price. Expert alterations by co-owner Regina Wittenberg ensure the perfect fit. “The quality of the fabrics, the classic designs, craftsmanship and economic benefits make vintage a winning combination,” Marilyn says. Stop in Chic Cherie, and don’t miss the regularly scheduled fashion shows–the Holiday fashion show, the 1960’s vintage lingerie event, February’s romantic fashion show, and the Spring Vintage Bridal show with Steven Porterfield.

Bresenhan and O’Bryant Puentes credit their love of quilts, to their experiences of receiving star quilts as wedding presents, hand-pieced by their great-grandmother. These original star quilts were specially made and quilted at a family quilting bee. Bresenhan and O’Bryant Puentes have spent several decades collecting quilts.
Three of the Center’s four galleries will contain these antique quilts, each of which is unique in its color and star pattern, many being from the 19th century.. Many years later, my husband and I were in Old Town Spring for an outing. I visited Juliene’s Quilt Shop and saw a quilt top on the wall with a sign that said “Make this in one day”. Huh? I called my best friend and we signed up. We had our fabric pre-cut for the class and we did make our quilt tops in one long day. It was doable and that experience hooked me forever! Just knowing that I created such a memorable item thrilled me and I still use it today, almost 20 years later. If you are lucky enough to live near a quilt shop, go in sometime and feed your soul on the inspiring quilts on display. Touch the bolts of fabric and

A few years ago, a customer asked me when and why I started quilting. Hmmmm. My first attempt at quilting was after I graduated from high school in 1974. No one in my family quilted but I was inspired by the Earth Movement and leading a more back to nature kind of life. Having said that, my first quilt was small, made from double knit fabric (indestructible and ugly), cardboard templates and scissors. It was atrocious, so it is now in a landfill, probably still in perfect condition. So much for my contribution to the Earth!
find one that speaks to you. Quilting cottons have changed a great deal over the years. They are not the same ditsy calicos that were used in our grandmother’s quilts. Is a child turning three? Is a loved one graduating or getting married? Maybe a new baby is on the way. All of these joyful occasions can be punctuated with the gift of a quilt.

Institute of Texan Cultures Puts Classic & Contemporary Quilt Artisanship on Display
Quilts have brought warmth and comfort to Texas for generations. From being a matter of necessity to becoming a family heirloom, to a modern work of art, quilting traditions run strong in the Lone Star State. “Texas Art Quilts and Modern Masterpieces,” are two traveling art exhibits from the Texas Quilt Museum, being presented by the Institute of Texan Cultures through January 11. The exhibits feature more than 40 contemporary, artistic quilts. “Modern Masterpieces by Texas Quilters, 1989 – 2010” showcases 20 works by Texan aritsts, covering themes ranging from stars to gardens to fishing. New interpretations of old favorites allow these pieces to push the boundaries of Texas quilt making. “Texas Art Quilts, 1993-2011” presents 26 works by Texas artists, embracing abstract and representational modes. Themes include science, fantasy, political causes and natural beauty. Employing color and pattern in a painterly fashion, the artists show that contemporary quilt art in Texas represents a vital aspect of visual culture. “Texas quilts embody the spirit of enterprise and innovation of pioneer women in the Lone Star state," said exhibit curator Sandra Sider. “Contemporary quilts interpret that rich legacy for today’s world, with superb artistry and imaginative compositions,” she explained. The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. Cesar Chavez Boulevard, a short distance from the Alamo and River Walk. Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Saturday, noon – 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission: $8, adults, $7 over 65 and over, $6, children and free for members, UTSA or Alamo Colleges I.D. Call 210-458-2300 or visit www.TexanCultures. com. Project is funded in part by a grant from the Quilters Guild of Dallas, Helena Hibbs Endowment Fund.

by Michelle Lindsey Houston Yacht Club is known as the “friendliest yacht club on the Texas Gulf Coast” and many friendships are formed and blossom at the HYC Women’s Sailing Association established in 1983. The association hosted its annual Sail to High Tea event August 16 and neither wind nor rain could dampen the spirit of these members. The weather was not cooperating as the event attendees left on their voyage with the sail leaving from HYC in Shoreacres (Texas) to WSA President, Sabra Francis' beautiful bay-home in Morgan's Point (Texas). As soon as the boats left the harbor, the sunny day disappeared. The weather closed in... cloud cover, 15-knot breeze, chop with whitecaps. But, the tea party guest would not be deterred. Holding tight to their decorative hats, they braced against the winds with their eyes towards the shore. Once they reached their destination, the attendees were not disappointed and they were soon rewarded for braving the rough seas. Along with a variety of savory and sweet treats, members enjoyed silver blossom flowering tea, a green tea, plum ooling tea, masala chia, traditional Earl Grey, & a special holiday red rooibus as well as Long Island iced tea, wine, and champagne. The Houston Yacht Club’s Women’s Sailing Association hosts racing, social and educational events throughout the year. The events are sometimes formal, sometimes informal, but always fun. Celebrating
BAYTOWN’S
Creative Community Baytown has a rich history, with its legacy tracing back to the Texas War of Independence and earlier as well as a deep history in the oil and refinery industry, serving as the catalyst for Howard Hughes' fortune. But the community’s history is more than war and drilling. Baytown has a softer, creative side, where artists of different backgrounds have called this city home, including actors, singers, songwriters, journalists and painters. When it comes to cultivating the creative talents of Baytown’s residents, The Art League of Baytown is ready to lend their support. The Art League of Baytown’s mission is to promote the fine arts of painting, sculpting, and ceramics and to create fellowship among practicing artists. That has been the organization’s focus since it was incorporated in 1954. From providing classes to raising awareness of the arts in the community, The Art League of Baytown is dedicated to making its community a better place, and in some cases a more colorful place. The organization continued to grow as it continued to promote fine arts, and set its sights on a brick-and-mortar facility to help promote the city’s creative community. In 2008, with the help and support of the City of Baytown, the Art League acquired a residence at 110 W. Texas Avenue in the Historic Shopping District of Old Goose Creek. The building, which was originally constructed as F.W. Woolworth’s c. 1924, was named The Art Center of Baytown. Though the building was badly in need of repair, the organization’s members saw it as a blank canvas ready to be turned into a masterpiece. Though the facility is still a work in progress, the Art League continues forward with the continued support of its members and the financial contributions from community businesses, industries and citizens. Now, six years later the center hosts a full schedule with various workshops, classes and events.
2014 Scholarship Winners
Winter is the busiest time of the year for The Art League of Baytown. In addition to the activities at the Art Center, the organization hosts the Christmas on Texas Avenue and the Christmas Gift Gallery. The Christmas on Texas Avenue Festival, December 6th, 2014 is in its 17th year and the fourth year that the Art League has sponsored it. Texas Avenue in Old Goose Creek is closed off to through traffic for vendors and food trucks to set up for the crowds that come rain or shine. But there is always fun at this magical holiday event. Activities include pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus inside the Art Center, Kiddie train rides, face painting, caricatures, prizes for best costume and best decorated booth, door prizes and shout outs. Local businesses are open during the day. Starting the first week in November, the Art League begins its 60th annual Christmas Gift Gallery which will feature the art and crafts of over forty members, with creations in various art media such as paintings, pottery, jewelry, hand-painted porcelain, photography, greeting cards and casual crafts for the kitchen and home. The Art League is already planning the activities for 2015 as well, which will include an Afternoon High Tea Fundraiser in January. For more information on these events or to learn more about classes, workshops or membership in The Art League of Baytown, visit them at http://art-league-of-baytown.org or call The Art Center at 281-427-2222. PINK POWER Passions In Your Life
by GiGi Lewis
Have you ever been in a group yet felt isolated or alone? It happens all the time. At Second Baptist Church-Woodway, we encourage community. While the Heights Bible Study Class has various activities, the women wanted something more. Because of that desire to build friendships through community, “Pink Power” was born! We wanted to grow lasting relationships for women transitioning through all phases of life and are thrilled with the success. Recently, a couple of women in the group learned they shared a love for hospitality and hosting authentic English Teas. After hours of brainstorming and planning, “Passions In Your Life – An Authentic English Tea”, became a reality! The tea was hosted by Leslie Moore with the help of class member Teresa Brooks. Guest speakers were: Penny Ward, TEAinTEXAS Etiquette Columnist; Heather Clary, Houston’s only Certified Tea Master; Clista Woods, Personal Trainer and Certified Rehabilitation Specialist; and Coppelia Acevedo, Morning Show Host of KSBJ 89.3. Each woman shared personal stories about passions in their lives, while enjoying Leslie’s homemade traditional English tea fare of finger sandwiches, old world cookies, scones, tarts, and an assortment of Heather’s perfectly brewed teas. Pink Power continues to reach and change lives within our Bible Study and Houston. We give thanks to God our Father, our church, the women of Pink Power, our hostess, and our special guests. These women are amazing leaders in their respective industries who demonstrated their support and encouragement for each of us to follow our passions in life.

ANNA’S JOURNEY: A STORY OF EARLY SWEDISH IMMIGRANTS TO TEXAS
by Elroy Haverlah
Readers from ages 8 to 80 will find themselves enthralled by Elroy Haverlah’s recently released Anna’s Journey: A Story of Early Swedish Immigrants to Texas. July, 1848 finds Anna Palm aboard the ‘Augusta’ alongside her husband A nde rs a nd her six young sons. Desiring a better future for their sons, they leave Sweden and follow their nephew to Texas. Their experiences, shared from the viewpoint of young Andrew Palm, are inspirational and educational. Readers will develop a new appreciation for how the early

Texas immigrants overcame obstacles while settling the new frontier. Humor and romance intertwined with bits of history provide dimension to this novel. In addition, their hope “based on confidence in our own abilities and in God’s providence,” enables them to survive tumultuous sea travel, illnesses, harsh winter conditions, and provide food by hunting and gardening. Anna’s courage during difficult days provides an example for us to remain steadfast in our times of uncertainty. Today the Palm family legacy continues through various venues and business endeavors. History buffs might enjoy traveling to Round Rock, Texas where Anna Palm is buried in the Palm Valley Lutheran Church cemetery. The two homes built by Andrew Palm are open to visitors. One is a museum and one is located on the “original site where Anna and her sons first lived in tents.” Bibliophiles will be interested to learn that many of the 100,000 books donated to the University of Texas at Austin in 1897 by Swante Palm are currently housed at the Harry Ransom Center and the Perry Castaneda Library.

While author Susan Albert Wittig is primarily known for her popular mysteries, she puts her sleuthing skills to good use in her bestselling novel A Wilder Rose. “Based on Rose Wilder Lane’s unpublished diaries and letters,” Wittig successfully unravels “the surprising true story of the…collaboration that Rose and her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder, concealed from their agent, editors, reviewers and readers.” A “scholarly debate” began in the 1970’s when manuscript discrepancies were discovered, and Wittig provides clarification primarily from Lane’s point of view. Spanning eleven years (1928-1939), Wittig’s novel resolves this “literary mystery” as it vividly brings to life the relationship b e t w e e n Rose and her mother Laura. “It is the tale of two exceptional women: a m o t h e r who had a fascinating pioneer story to tell but whose writing skills were not up to the challenge of shaping and polishing it for publication; and a daughter, a gifted and much-published author who had both the skill to turn her mother’s stories into memorable books and the publishing connections that would get them into print.” Readers will gain a deeper respect and understanding of both Wilder and Lane as A Wilder Rose explores the many aspects of their complex relationship. Especially poignant is witnessing Lane’s “struggle with the daily angers, frustrations, and fears that distanced her from her mother and the duty, compassion, and caring that pulled her closer.” Devoted fans of the “Little House on the

Tea at the ready
Ta ck on Tea
by Paula Myers, Houston
The holiday season is upon us and one glance at the calendar makes it disappointingly clear that there is no time for that lavish tea you’ve been dreaming of hosting this year. The solution: Tack Tea onto your schedule! Almost any activity on your overflowing calendar can be enhanced with a spot of tea. After the traditional shopping day with your girlfriends, the school Christmas performance with the family next door, or even the annual home tour with your favorite cousin. Rather than fight the crowd at the coffee shop, invite your group into your home for a post-event teatime. All you’ll need is a seasonal tea blend, a little festive music and a simple treat or two. Not only will you extend your time together but you will also be setting a sweet example of the Tea at the Ready style of hospitality that you’ve been cultivating all year long.
Keep calm and Tack on Tea! Mix up these pretty sandwiches, add packaged gingerbread men and put on the kettle for an almost instant holiday tea party! Olive Tea Sandwiches 12 oz cream cheese, softened 3/4 c finely chopped pecans 1/2 c finely chopped pimento-stuffed green olives Combine all ingredients and use as spread on thin white bread with crusts removed.

Tea Etuquette Q&A
First Time Holiday Hostess?
TeaEtiquette
Q&A
This year will be my first time to host our families for holiday dinner. As it gets closer, it seems a bit intimidating for a first-time hostess! Do you have any ideas for a simple and quick, but festive holiday table? Also, I could use basic instructions on how to properly set the table. Being the hostess can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! A little planning and organization can make the difference between a calm and confident hostess and a frazzled one. Do as much as possible ahead of time. Setting the table is one thing that can easily be done in advance.
44
www.teaintexas.com | Winter 2014
For the table decorations, begin with your tablecloth. If your dinner is informal, use a festive tablecloth that reflects your personality. If it is more formal, use white, ivory, or something a little fancier from your collection. If your tablecloth doesn’t quite fit, layer several to add extra interest and texture to your table. For napkins, always use cloth! Cloth napkins elevate even the most informal occasion into something a little more special. Go simple for the centerpiece. Use elements from nature like leaves, flowers, nuts, pumpkins, and fruit. Add unscented candles for sparkle. Make sure your centerpiece is low enough for your guests to see over! Even the most beautiful and elegant centerpiece is unwelcome if your guests cannot see each other. After all, the purpose of the dinner is to share a special occasion with one another. Now is the time to use the dishes you have saved for special occasions. If you don’t have enough place settings, mix and match with colors that complement each other. It adds character to the table! For more tablescape ideas, check the Tea in Texas magazine archives. There are a few examples of fall tables that I previously did for the magazine; or, you can consult my website. You will find lots of illustrations on the internet of how to set a table, but be aware that they are not all correct. I have come across many beautifully set tables that have elements of the table setting out of place!
Houston--GulfCoast Houston Coast
The easiest way is to start with your dinner plate in the middle of your place setting. You may use a charger underneath to add color and interest. Silver ware is placed around the plate in the order it will be used, from the outside to the inside. Remember that forks always go on the left; knives and spoons go on the right. Knives are placed next to the plate with the blade of the knife facing the plate; the spoons to the right of the knives. The napkin is placed either to the left of the forks, or in the center of the plate. The bread plate is placed above the forks, with the spreader placed across it. Water glasses go on the right at the tip of the knife. Dessert forks and spoons may be placed above the dinner plate or brought out with the dessert course.

I like to use place cards to add a personal touch to the table. They convey a sentiment of “welcome; I planned for you” to your guests. Always keep in mind that being a good hostess is so much more than just the decorations, the food, or a beautiful table. It is about taking time with family and friends to build memories. It is about making them feel welcome, valued, and blessed. My wish for you this holiday season is that you will enjoy the abundant blessing of family and friends!

the leftovers from food that filled her family’s hearts and stomachs, sits waiting to be cleared. A china cabinet sits nearly empty and will soon be filled again, with dishes ready for food, made with love. She smiles as she watches her son ask his children once again to be careful near a glass vase or figurine. She has learned through the years that the children’s laughter is more valuable than the lamp he is trying to protect. Years later, a similar rocking chair, buffet or lamp found in an antique shop may remind a family member of the warmth and happiness that they experienced at those family gatherings.
As the holidays draw near, we look for ways to create new memories while reminiscing about those of our own past. Nostalgia is one of the most power elements in our daily lives and the holidays tend to increase those feelings. Whether its unwrapping treasured ornaments while decorating the Christmas tree or recreating a cherished family recipe for a holiday dish. The focus of these memories may be on an event or family activity, but in the background sits a stage with elements that lend itself to the creation of those memories whether we realize it at the time or not.
Antique shops are filled with treasures that once lay witness to a family making memories. Shop owners are the keepers of these treasures as they transition from one family to another and begin to experience the creation of more memories.
Imagine, its Christmas Day, and a grandmother sits rocking in her chair while she watches the children play with their new treasures. Peeking out from the dining room is a buffet where
Greg Nolte, owner of Gen’s Antiques in Houston’s Heights, agrees that antiques, whether it’s a piece of furniture, a decorative piece, or holiday decor, have the power to trigger memories when paired with the right person. “There is nothing more intriguing than the history or possible stories a piece could tell,” says Nolte.

Walking through an antique shop has the power to evoke emotion and memories such as, recalling the excitement felt at your grandparents’ farm, or listening to your parents talk long after they thought you’d gone to bed. Shops are filled with similar furniture, patterns of china, or old quilts which sat quietly in the background while those memories were made, and the sight of them can trigger a time long forgotten. Texas has an eclectic array of shops where these treasures can be found. From its large cities to its small communities, Texas is home to more than 2,000 antique shops, resale shops, flea markets and auction houses. Shopping at these venues combines the excitement of an exploration and the satisfaction of finally finding the “holy grail”. Their uniqueness and individuality is what makes them desirable. “Antique items have so much more character,” says Nolte, adding that whether you are buying these pieces to incorporate into your own home or give as a gift, it makes the piece that much more personal and unique. Notle knows that those looking at these shops for the first

time may be overwhelmed, but says it doesn’t have to be. “Find something that you have a passion for and many times that will give you an advantage as you gain knowledge (of the item) and the ability in finding those treasures with quality and value.” He adds that these pieces also retain their value better when cared for properly. “You can almost always break even when you want a change (in furniture) versus buying something new and paying someone to haul off the old piece.” Although purchasing for nostalgic purpose may be the initial reasons for acquiring a piece, one should consider the purchase as an investment as well. Nolte states that considering antique shops for holiday and celebratory gifts has the added bonus of giving a unique gift with character.

The Texas Tea Festival is Born!!! The great state of Texas has every kind of festival you can imagine—wine, hot sauce, music of every genre, food for every appetite, peaches, pecans, olives, lavender, holidays and rodeos. You name it, we’ve got it—except, of course, for one very important omission: a tea festival. After our third of four types of light-roasted Oolongs at the Steeping Room in Austin, my fellow tea lovers and I decided to take action. As we were wistfully discussing possibly attending the NW Tea Festival, the New York Tea Festival, or perhaps the Rocky Mountain Tea Festival, an idea was born. Why not ost our own tea festival!? And we’ll do it Texas style!
1ST ANNUAL
TEXAS TEA FESTIVAL Tea Tastin’ Texas Style (y’all!)
Mark your calendars! The 1st Annual Texas Tea Festival will take place on Sunday, February 8, 2015, all day, at the historic Saengerrunde Hall in Austin, Texas. There will be tea tastings (porcelain tasting cup included with admission), tea vendors, tea time treats, tea talks, a children’s tea party, live music (this is Austin, after all), and tons more fun! This will not be a dry, boring tea festival—it will be a lively, fun event for the tea connoisseur and novice alike! There will be a variety of teas to sample, including herbal teas, iced teas, and Kombucha. We hope to see y’all there— big Victorian hats, and all! For reasonably priced tickets, festival schedule, vendors, sponsors, and more, visit www.texasteafestival.com. There is an advance ticket discount—so pack your car and bring your friends! It’s the perfect time for a Tea in Texas road trip!

Texas tea Festival
No matter where your holiday and winter travels take you; whether “over the river and through the woods” to grandma’s house, or to quaint Texas towns on the plains, hill country, or near the ocean, one thing is for sure you will need a place to stay. This year, why not book a bed and breakfast to add to the enjoyment and experience of your travels? Each property is unique and has a character and personality all its own. The choices range from cabins on a ranch or in the woods, Victorian mansions, small cottages in town, or sea side bungalows and more. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, most will be creatively decorated to bring in the festivities of the area. Some will be participating in open house tours, dinners, tea parties, and more. Check specific properties and chambers of commerce or visitor centers for events in the area. The attention to details in customer service, ambience, and management usually far exceeds that which one receives from the
st
larger chain hotels. There is something very special about visiting with the owners of a bed and breakfast and getting to know the area and its people first hand. A stay at a bed and breakfast makes a wonderful and memorable gift. Most B&B’s offer gift certificates for future use. The recipient will be most delighted. If you have never had the opportunity to stay at a bed and breakfast, let this be the year you venture out and try one. If you have stayed at a Texas B&B property, you will return for another great time.

Cooking Class At Mosheim Mansion to Feature Cookies that are Edible Artifacts The art of making cookies from detailed elaborate molds dates back over 500 years! In Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland and other European Countries, these unique and exquisitely detailed cookies were used to tell stories and commemorate important life events. Bakers used elaborate wood, or metal molds depicting Christmas, Biblical tales, betrothals, weddings, victories and such. When many people could not read or write, these cookies served a very important societal purpose.
we have engaged one of the few American bakers expert in the necessary techniques. Her name is Connie Meisinger. She is owner of House on the Hill, Inc in Chicago. They provide working replicas of historic and hand carved molds and teach the art of using them to bake the most exquisitely beautiful cookies in the world. They are divinely delicious as well!
Few of these incredible molds survived the centuries and most of those that did are housed in museums. However, molds made from the original museum pieces are now a v a i l a b l e through a few precious sources.
The Mosheim Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Seguin Texas is a Victorian jewel and the perfect setting in which to master this the art of Springerle, Gingerbread and Frankfurter Brenton ( an almond paste based molded cookie). The class will be held at the Mosheim Mansion December 6th, in time for holiday baking. The class runs from 10:30AM to approximately 5:30PM. A lunch and after class reception is included. Tuition is $125 and registration is required. Molds will be available for purchase. This is a hands-on class, not just a demonstration. To register or get more information call the Mosheim Mansion at 830 372 9905.
Springerle Cookies (Swiss and German), Gingerbread (speculaas) and other cookies produced with these molds are rarely seen anymore. Baking them is nearly a lost art. In the interest of preserving this important part of European culture and artisan baking,

"I am Swiss and German and enjoyed these as a child and was very excited to sponsor the class and work with Connie." says Hirschi, owner and chef at the Mosheim Mansion. "We are real foodies here, with a great interest in German and Swiss food." This will be the first in a series of unique cooking classes to be sponsored by the Mosheim Mansion. Other classes will include: Swiss Cookies called Bratzeli made with a special iron, Rosettes (a delicate paper thin fried cookie), baked German Pancakes, the perfect omelet and many more delicious dishes.
