Who is Sharmila Sharmila was simply and profoundly the most beautiful person I have ever met. Sharmila fought stage 4 cancer for almost 11 years. In the process she proved every doctor wrong and defied all medical statistics and logic. She was the ultimate example of how not to merely survive in a perilous situation but to thrive. Sharmila faced her seemingly hopeless situation with a unique and angelically hopeful smile. People often ask how she maintained her defiance and joy for over a decade. She had an exact plan. She let nothing “just happen” to her. She was actively engaged with her medical team in order to better understand her disease and always replied with fervent thank yous for all their efforts. She habitually thanked God that so many people worked so hard to attack her disease and stood ready to help her. Literally everything she did she would fiercely attack with a simple smile and a laugh. People that knew her would also tell you that you couldn’t be around her for more than a minute without getting a hug. She was always quick to remind me that if she had gotten cancer in 2012 she would’ve “whooped its tail.” She truly believed that ultimately anyone could defeat cancer if they become educated about their unique situation, surround themselves with love and most importantly, attack with reckless abandon all situations with a beautifully irrational smile.
