Kickoff Day The 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition game has finally arrived! Everyone gathered in the Centre for Creative Learning, all extremely eager to see what this year’s game would be. Much speculation was heard from our team, as well as two other teams we had invited to watch the webcast with us.

Meanwhile, a Quick Build was being hosted for 18 local teams in the school’s Field House, helping them build their kitbots. It can extremely beneficial for teams to get their kitbot out of the way so they can focus on scoring and the other aspects of the game. Our new grade 9 students joined them and were able to build a kitbot of their own. They did an excellent job!

AERIAL ASSIST is played by two competing Alliances of three robots each on a flat 25’ x 54’ foot field, straddled by a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor. The objective is to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two (2)minute and 30-second match. The more Alliances score their ball in their goals, and the more they work together to do it, the more points their Alliance receives.

Week 1: Prototyping
The first stage in any build season is prototyping! This week, we’ve tested a component to fulfill virtually every game requirement including shooting, passing, picking up balls, and catching! Once we’ve finished testing we can move on to the real thing! This is a crucial part of the build season, one that defines the final product to an enormous extent. Ideas are flying around the room at breakneck speeds, with students trying to find the best way to play Aerial Assist.

Engineers of the Week The engineers of the week for week 1 are Grade 11 students Jonathan Pearce (right) and Matthew Riley (below)!
The duo designed, machined, and assembled our pre-season drivetrain, which turned out to be amazing! The drivetrain has proven to be invaluable for testing our prototypes. Jonathan and Matthew will also be designing this season’s drivetrain, and we expect it to be even better than the last! We are extremely proud of these two and we know they will continue to be huge assets to the team again next year. Congratulations, boys!
