EICMA DELIGHTED DE PUNIET MEETS THE FANS AT EICMA IN MILAN

After the ultimate round of the 2009 season in Valencia, the premier class riders and Teams will be reconvening at Sepang in February for the first test session of 2010 including the LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet who will now have time to continue the full rehabilitation of the ankle he broke back in August. Before moving to the hospital to remove the screws from the left ankle, the Frenchman hit the 67th edition of EICMA fair in Milano last Satur8

day together with the Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello. The pair have been visiting the Team supporters stands (GIVI, REVI’T!, Arrow, PBR, Rapid Bike, Rizoma, Fren Tubo, Elf, Progrip and Mediaset) for the whole day taking photos and signing postcards to hundreds of fans. Randy: “Before going to the hospital to remove the seven screws from my ankle, I preferred to spend one day at EICMA with

Lucio and I really enjoyed the atmosphere! The fans have been very warm with me and the Team supporters have been very friendly. I’d like to thank them for their support during the last season and hope to share positive results with them in the future”. Cecchinello: “EICMA is one of the most important event for those who work in the two wheels market and it is also a unique event for the fans because they can meet their favourites. Randy has been very friendly and nice with everybody and I am pretty sure we will be coming next year too thanks to the warmth and the hospitality of our supporters”.

MOTOR SHOW SUCCESSFUL MOTOR SHOW EXHIBITION FOR DOCTOR GLASS AND LCR TEAM

Although the bad weather, the 2009 Motor Show exhibition, set from the 4th to the 8th of December at BolognaFiere, have reported a huge flow of public. The invitation to play with the 2 wheels and the 4 wheels (the official slogan was “COME AND PLAY) has been very appreciated by the public which crowded the exhibition gates early in the morning despite the rain and the cold temperatures. More than 450.000 visitors have visited the 34th edition of the Motor 12

Show throughout the 5 days enjoying the competitions and the previews related to the latest models. Even the Doctor Glass stand (LCR Honda MotoGP Team Official Supporter) set inside the Team Hospitality structure for the second year, has been crowded by 2500 persons. A huge number of friends, fans and collaborators, met the Doctor Glass staff at pavilion 36 enjoying the nice hospitality

thanks to the good food, the smiles and the friendly but professional atmosphere. Amongst the visitors even the LCR Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello who was there last Saturday to meet the fans and to take pictures aboard Randy de Puniet’s Honda RC212V. Unfortunately the Frenchman is still recovering from the last operation of the left ankle and was not able to attend the exhibition. Lucio Cecchinello: “I have been visiting the Motor Show exhibition from many years and although the 2009 edition has been shorter than the past ones, the public was very warm and this is very positive! People, especially the young, like the motor field and they have got a huge passion for 2 wheels and 4 wheels sports. It is a pity that Randy could not join us this year but he is still recovering from the last operation and he is proceeding with his rehabilitation programme. The Doctor Glass staff have managed the event in the best way once again and we are happy to work with them in this special and renowned occasion.

C. BOURGUIGNON LCR HONDA MOTOGP TEAM CHIEF ENGINEER CHRISTOPHE BOURGUIGNON ON DE PUNIET INCOMING SEASON ABOARD THE HONDA RC212V

Christophe Bourguignon has been involved in the racing field since 1989 when he started his career like a motocross mechanic passing through different roles and riders till the first cooperation with De Puniet on 2006 at the time of his debut in the premier class. Following De Puniet’s third next season in MotoGP class with LCR Team, we deepen the French rider’s performances and potential thanks to his Chief Engineer’s 16

expert eye. Please give us your point of view on 2009 season. “Of course we finished the season with lot of frustration because the 7th final position in the championship was reachable until he last race. But later, after some reflection, we had to take all the positive points

from 2009 and remember our mistakes to avoid them in 2010. We made some good progress compare to 2008; Randy had lot more confidence on the front (probably mainly due to the change of the tyres) and his racing approach was better. The start was much better and for most of the season we have been in our top 10 target. Unfortunately his ankle injury shadowed a lot his final ranking. Technically, after a difficult winter tests start, we had a relatively good performance. The adaptation and the lack of experience with the Bridgestone rubber cost us some points as we did not make the best tyre choice at every race. Then our bike set up, together with Randy riding style, was maybe too aggressive with the rear tyre and the bike seemed to perform really good at beginning of the race but the rear tyre performance seemed to drop quicker than others competitors at the end of the race. Valencia was the perfect example. But overall, considering the profile of our team and the human resources we had, we have to be satisfied of Randy’s 2009 results and we should look to 2010 with a positive attitude”. What about the 2010 season? Bourguignon: “For 2010 we had the confirmation from HRC that we will have a factory type spec. motorcycle. Thus all motorcycles should have almost equal performances. Also the fact that all Honda machines will use the Öhlins suspension should help us to accelerate our development and our set up.

(On 2009 Randy was the only Honda rider equipped with Öhlins). One year of experience on Bridgestone should improve our tyres selection during the race week end. We will keep all our LCR technical staff to perform properly from the beginning of the season. It will be the 5th season for Randy in MotoGP class (the 3rd with LCR Honda) and he should be back to his top physical performance after the last successful operation of his left ankle. I honestly think we should have a good overall package”. Your expectation for the incoming season. Bourguignon: “It is really hard to issue a final target for 2010 without knowing the exact performance of our bike and the potential of our competitors. But, on the paper and with the experience of the whole team, we should target a top 10 finish at every race and we could imagine to battle in the top 6 on specific situation or GP. I am confident that if we would give Randy a good feeling on the bike, he could easily race in the top group”.

THE TEAM IS READY TO START!

R. DE PUNIET I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK’S TEST IN SEPANG!

After a long winter break started last November at the end of Comunitat Valenciana GP and after the last successful operation of the left ankle in December, the LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy De Puniet is ready to return to action for the first test session at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia next week. The Frenchman and his premier class colleagues will “taste” the Malaysian asphalt for two days (4/5 February) aboard their new

18

bikes in preparation for the forthcoming season. Randy, who will turn 29 on the 14th of February, is eager to get on the new bike as his team were recently at Honda Racing’s workshop in Tokyo to work on the 2010 version of the RC212V. You will turn 29 in two weeks time: any special present for your bday? Randy: “Well… I am very excited to test the new bike. That’s a very special present

a long time...” What’s your TO DO list for Sepang test session? Randy: “Some of my colleagues already tried the new bikes in Valencia last year and I used the old one. Now it’s my turn to test it and I am really curious. We have much to do as the testing days have been reduced so we will work hard to find the right setting quickly. Then we are going to proceed with a race simulation and some flying laps to check my average speed”. Have you been training hard in the winter time? Randy: “I have done some good training after the Christmas holidays to resume from the ankle injury. My personal trainer Yves Demaria was always with me. Jules Cluzel (Moto2 rider) came to train with me and we did cycling, motorcycling, running, and many other things for between three and four hours per day, five days per week and over a three-week period. It was good for both of us”. for me. My team was in Japan last week to work on the new RC212V and I spoke with my crew chief. He told me that it will be closer to the factory prototype so I can’t wait to ride it. Then, between the two Malaysian test sessions, I will join one friend in Australia with my girlfriend. We will celebrate my birthday there”. This year is your 12th year in the MotoGP field. What’s your feeling? Randy: “It’s a long career but I still feel very young! I rode my first world GP in 1998 and the year after I began my career in the MotoGP championship. Honestly the first year season was not easy but I always knew that my father was behind me. He passed me the passion for this sport as he was a racer too. Sometimes I feel surprised about the time I have spent on the bike all around the world but I hope to stay in MotoGP for

SEPANG CIRCUIT 1TH TEST

MALAYSIA DE PUNIET MAKES HIS DEBUT ABOARD THE 2010 RC212V AT SEPANG TWO DAYS OF TEST The first official MotoGP Test of the year started yesterday in Malaysia with the 17 riders involved in the development of the new 2010 prototypes. Following a two month winter layoff the MotoGP World Championship riders returned to action at the 5.548km Sepang circuit for the two days of testing putting their new bikes through their paces with Rossi on the top of the timesheets with a best lap time of 2’00.925. 22

On Thursday the Malaysian track opened for testing at 09.00 and continued through a warm humid day until rain showers fell at 16.30 ending the session 30 minutes early. Today’s air temperature reached 31°C but once again the typical tropical rain affected the last day of testing since early morning. The LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy De Puniet made his debut aboard the new RCV

and got back on track in preparation for the forthcoming season. The Frenchman completed 62 laps on Thursday working with his technicians to improve the chassis and the suspension settings of his Honda machinery. He was on a long run when the rain came but today’s he has been back to his set up work (48 laps) trying several adjustments to make a step up in his machine performance. De Puniet posted his best lap time of 2’03.043 riding his Honda to the 13th position and will return to the Malaysian track at the end of February for further pre-season testing. De Puniet: “The first outing on the new bike has been a bit tough for us. The bike looks good but after few laps I felt that the feeling was quite nervous. So we have worked a lot on the set up especially on chassis regulations and suspension settings. After that I could ride with much confidence and we have started a long run gaining a god pace on hard tyres. This morning we have been trying several adjustments... some were good but much work has yet to be done. We rode another long run today (about 17 laps) and, at the end of the day, I went out on soft tyre but the surface temperature was not as good as I expected. I know that the 13th position is not brilliant but we did not look for the ultimate laps time. We gathered important data for the next test session to have clear ideas about the direction we have to follow”.

SEPANG CIRCUIT 2TH TEST

MALAYSIA YVES DEMARIA’S EXPERT EYE ON RANDY’S TRAINING PROGRAMME FIRST DAY In 2009 the LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet has decided to face up the season with a further support which was named Yves Demaria. Together with his country fellow Randy has begun a very important mental and physical training programme and the pair have travelled together throughout the whole season. Yves Demaria (born January 22, 1972 in Marseille) has been a very talented motocross racer gaining the MX3 World Title

26 26

for three times. Demaria won his first MX3 world championship in 2004, following with two more crowns in 2006 and 2007. He has also won several races in the MX1-GP and MX2-GP categories. Randy: “First of all Yves is a very good friend and I respect him for his incredible career. When I have decided to work with him people thought that it was a strange cooperation. I could have involved a real personal trainer or a former GP rider but I knew that Yves could support me in the

perience for both”. Please explain us the training programme you chose for Randy. Yves: “Randy likes sports very much so it has not been difficult to involve him in different activities. We decided to create a base programme which includes cycling and running… then, of course, we practice MX, Enduro and Supermotard”. As a former MX rider which are the main targets for a rider to be fitted for the competitions. Example: special diet, special training etc... Yves: “In my opinion to be at the top level in every sport, you must have a good physical condition and an irreproachable healthy life. Then you have to add a good training, a healthy diet and good sleeps. But the most important thing is that you have to do a lot sacrifices!”

right way. He is thick-skinned like all the MX riders. He could teach me how to improve my concentration and skills on the bike. If we consider that every GP rider usually practice motocross Yves was the right choice for me! Together we have planned a regular training programme which includes aerobic and anaerobic exercises considering the training typologies, their intensity and the powers of recovery. Thanks to the cardio equipment and a regular blood exam session I can easily check my physical form constantly”. When have you met Randy for the first time and how did you start your collaboration with him? Yves: “Well I met Randy 10 years ago during a Supermoto competition and we immediately had a good feeling. After that, we started to do some MX training in the winter time. At the end of 2008 season he asked me a further help to be more competitive and more concentrated at the races and I thought it could be an interesting ex-

Which are the main differences between a MX rider and a MotoGP rider? Physically speaking. Yves: “Compared to a MX rider, a MotoGP rider needs less physical training, it’s sure! For the GPs you have to work on the suppleness and not being too muscular. For the MX competitions you have to become physically strong, powerful and you must train a lot on the bike”.

DE PUNIET BETTERS HIS PACE AT SEPANG SECOND OUTING LAST DAY The premier class teams and riders returned to Malaysia for the second MotoGP winter test at the 5.548km Sepang circuit, after a three-week break. The 16 official riders were greeted by warm humid weather conditions and a good, clean track surface, conditions that allowed for optimum rider performances and fast lap times. Two days of testing at the Malaysian circuit concluded today with Rossi on the top of the timesheets with the best time of 2’00.271. HRC engineers and the LCR Team technicians had used the intervening time to further develop the RCV based upon the data gathered at the first Sepang test. LCR Honda MotoGP Team racer Randy De Puniet, who turned 29 some days ago, made the most of the hot, sunny weather at the Malaysian circuit to complete two days of development work with the new RC212V. The Frenchman improved his first test lap time of 1.063s clocking his fastest lap time of 2’01.980 today on lap 4 of 58. De Puniet put in a massive 134 laps of the

5.548km circuit throughout the two days of testing and will be back on track the 18th and 19th of March in Qatar for the ultimate test session before the season’s “kick off”. De Puniet - 11th: “If we consider the two days in total we made some progress with the suspension set up which was our main issue in the first outing here some weeks ago. Basically we have worked to develop the machine base set up using the data we gathered before and I am pretty satisfied about this second test session and about the lap time I have clocked up today.

It could be even better (maybe half second) as, at the end of the day, we have found a better suspension set up to test but we had just used tyres left. We did a race simulation and I feel more comfortable on the bike thanks to the step forward we made on the machine balance and on the weight distribution. Of course there is still work to do but I am more confident now ahead the last test session in Qatar.

LOSAIL CIRCUIT 2ND TEST

QATAR LIGHTS ON AT LOSAIL RACETRACK WITH DE PUNIET 5th FASTEST FIRST DAY Doha, 18th March: Under the state-ofthe-art lighting system at the desert circuit of Losail, the premier class Teams and riders completed their first day of testing with Rossi on the top of the timesheets. The two-night test in Qatar is the last chance for the MotoGP riders and teams to fine tune their 2010 bikes before returning to the floodlit track three weeks later 34

for the season’s “kick off” on the 11th of April. The premier class riders have been putting their new bikes through their paces since 6.00 pm local time continuing their set up process at the 5.380 km race track till midnight. Today the LCR Honda MotoGP team has displayed the 2010 livery branded with the

GIVI logo (LCR Team historical supporter which will be one of the great 2010 Event Title Sponsors) and the Official Team launching will be right prior to the first race! The LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet produced a best lap time of 1’56.588 on lap 32 of 54 carrying out further development at the desert circuit where the air temperature reached the 24 degrees (28 on the asphalt) but dropped at the end of the night testing. Despite some stomach pain, the Frenchman has completed his “TO DO” list increasing his confidence aboard the Honda RC212V no. 14 and remains the fastest Honda of the day. De Puniet - 5th: “Well.. apart from the stomach pain I am very satisfied. When I arrived here two days ago I was ok but this morning I felt the first cramps and it has not been easy to do my job in these conditions. Anyway when we left Sepang some weeks ago I knew that we have found a good base and today my positive feeling has been confirmed. I lapped consistently fast both on hard and soft tyres and I think we can get a further improvement on soft ones. We will see tomorrow...”

PRE-SEASON TEST AT LOSAIL ENDS WITH DE PUNIET 8th FASTEST LAST DAY Doha, 19th March: The two day of preseason test held at the floodlit 5.380 km Losail circuit in Qatar came to a close at midnight local time tonight with Stoner recording the best lap time of the day. The 17 MotoGP riders continued their busy schedules to try and ensure their prototypes are prepared in time for the first race at the circuit in just over three weeks. Weather conditions were close to perfect when the session opened at 18.00 local time with air temperature of 22 degrees. LCR Honda MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet was able to concentrate on engine performance with new mapping options and suspension setting during the six-hour test period. He steadily improved his fastest lap posting a best time of 1’56.504 in a 66-lap spell. The Frenchman aboard the GIVI liveried RCV was the second highest

De Puniet – 8th: “This morning when I woke up I felt okay (no more cramps) so I could work hard with my crew to fine tune the bike before the first round here. I am very satisfied as we made good progress especially on suspension setting and race pace. The bike is smoother now whilst in Sepang the feeling was quite nervous. We lapped a race simulation (20 turns) and I have posted my best time at the end of it... this is quite positive! I could do better today (probably 4th) but I found Barbera on my line in the last corner. Our issues are still with making the rear suspension work well for us and the bike feeling quite nervous going into the corners but I am delighted with the improvements of this test.

ECOSTYLE WORKING SYSTEM

ECOSTYLE REDUCING THE EMISSIONS THEY CAN OFFSETTING WHAT THEY CAN’T

Lucio Cecchinello’s Team have set themselves a difficult goal for the 2010 season, but for sure one with a high ethical value. During the entire 2009 season, LCR Honda Team has measured their GHG emissions (Green House Gas) in order to evaluate first the footprint and then the applicable reductions. The Team has chosen MEC srl from Torino as a partner for this kind of measuring, and some hardware has been installed in the structures inside the paddock to collect all the energy consumption 50

data. Then the calculation has been extended to all Team activities, from flights to traveling, from race tyres to the catering in the hospitality. It is for this reason that the LCR Team has been invited as guest to Energethica fair in Genova, Italy, last march, where they had the chance to give a new positive message: LCR Honda aims to show its eco-friendly work ethic, even if the core business is motor sport. After the measurements, with the help of a team of environmental consultants, the LCR Honda

Team has identified some improvements for the certified job procedures that will allow them to reduce the Team carbon footprint. Such improvements will be achieved with very high tech partners. Here are some examples: • the use of a new fleet of trucks, with an innovative hybrid fuel system mixing the LPG with Diesel, reducing the emission of these vehicles by 20% or more. The company that will provide this injection system named D-GID is Ecomotive Solutions. http:// www.ecomotive-solutions.com/

• the adoption of low-energy lighting systems also for the structures in the racetracks. • the use of recycled paper for common printings or FSC paper for high quality printings. • the shipment, delivery and storage of any document in digital format to reduce printed material. • the use of cotton team wear where possible. • waste sorting inside the hospitality. • the use of cutlery and dishes made of biodegradable materials such as MaterBi. These materials are provided by ECOZEMA. www.ecozema.com • the use of eco-friendly giveaways • the use of biodegradable shoppers made by Mater-Bi certified according UNI En 13432 and provided by Sisifo. www.sisifo. eu • the use of eco friendly detergents for everyday operations. • the purchasing of local food products in order to reduce the transport impact. • the monitoring of all our operations in order to be able to improve every day, made by MEC srl, specialized in environmental

consultancy. www.mecsrl.net Even if these actions are very important, they will not entirely offset the teams emissions, but they will reduce the carbon footprint. The following step is to offset totally the remaining emissions, through forest adoption and reforestation. To reach this target LCR Honda Team has decided to support FIRST FLORA which is an organization based in the United Kingdom. It has been involved for several years in protecting a particular region of the Rain Forest in Brasil, called Atlantic Forest, which has a unique eco system for both plants and animals. First Flora aims to protect from destruction a part named Janaina Reserve, and it’s possible to see details on their website www.firstflora.eu where it is also possible for every single citizen to adopt a single square meter of forest . The specific coordinates of the area are: 14°16’36” S 39°07’41”W. Edgar Mader, CEO of Energethica circuit, while inviting the Team to his Genova event, stated: ”The message coming out from this Team is very strong because of the contrast : a MotoGP Team becoming respectful

of the environment. But for this reason it is very powerful : if they can do it, if they can race at zero emissions, there are no more excuses for anybody else. The LCR Honda Team will finance the important protection program using a part of the seasons budget, provided by the partners of the Team. All these activities, reductions, respect and offsetting, will take part within the Team under the title ECOSTYLE project, which aims to give clear guidelines for doing the same job as before but in a better way, leaving a lighter footprint day by day or better, lap after lap !! Please go and visit the LCR Honda Team facebook page and leave a message on this subject.

ADVISE AND MUCH MORE...

L. CECCHINELLO “RIDE SAFELY TIPS FOR THE TEENAGERS” by Lucio Cecchinello

As a former 125cc class GP rider with a huge passion for racing competitions and motorbikes, I want to talk about safety on the road but would take more time and space. However these brief tips will help the teenagers and the motorbikes fans to prevent crashes! I have bought my first scooter (Vespa Piaggio) when I was 14 yearsold but I was immediately conscious about the dangerousness of riding the bike on the road.

Concentration, Protection, Attitude and Judgment are fundamental to prevent crashes together with some small adjustments as follows: HELMET This is the most important apparel while riding the scooter/bike on track and on the road. Thanks to this “safety instrument” many riders, including me, have been able to escape unhurt from the accidents. But

SPARK PLUG Spark plugs work well as long as you take care of them. Depending on how old/strong your engine is, you made to change your plugs often than the others. However this can alter performance drastically by giving you more power and less consumption. Remember: Iridium spark plugs may be expensive but they go off with a big big bang! If you follow these small simple steps I guarantee you the road will become a safer place! Will come back to you all soon with more tips to make you enjoy your bike safely….

remember… not buckling up your helmet, is about as clever not wearing one at all! TYRES If you do not look after them with the right pressure, sixe ect.. you will end up on the floor… and this is not FUN! Grip is very important if we consider the different surfaces. Remember: do not buy second hand tyres! FUEL AND LUBRIFICANTS The way you ride effects the amount of fuel you use so take your time and save extra cash! While you ride try to avoid sudden brakes and abrupt starts as this causes stress on the engine and fuel consumption. Remember: check periodically the oil level to get the best engine performance!

B. HARDEN LCR HONDA MOTOGP TEAM DATA RECORDING RESP. BRIAN HARDEN’S EXPERT EYE ON TELEMETRY SYSTEM

What’s your role inside the LCR Team and how did you learn this job? (past experiences, past teams and riders etc...) Brian Harden: “I graduated from Auckland University with Honours in Mechanical Engineering and entered the MotoGP field in 1999. At the end of this project I made some important contacts with the 2D company (who we still use today), and spent the next 6 years working for Kenny 58

Roberts. During this time I worked as chief data recording and engine management engineer for Jeremy McWilliams and Kenny Roberts Junior, and was fortunate enough to work with some of the very best engineers. After KR withdrew from racing, I spent a year with the Kawasaki test team, and began working for LCR in 2009. My responsibility within the team is for anything electrical, beginning with the setup of the pit garage and network. As far as the bikes

are concerned, I am responsible for all of the electrical systems on the bike, and the setup and maintenance of them. One of my most important roles during a test or GP is the modification of engine maps based on our discussions within the team, specifically between Rider and Crew Chief, and the data we receive from the bike”. Please explain us what is the telemetry and why is so important for MotoGP. Brian Harden: “We have many sensors on the bike which give us information from both the chassis and engine. Combining the riders comments with this data, we aim to make improvements to the bike setup, and improve the riders overall feeling of performance. Engine management has become an increasingly important factor in achieving the best laptimes since the change to 4-strokes, and I believe even more so since the change to 800cc machines. There is less room now for errors, and it is increasingly difficult for a rider to recover lost time due to a wheelie for example, or large amounts of spin. Therefore it is our aim to give the rider a machine which has the maximum amount of controllable power which he can use effectively, and provide maximum acceleration, using tools such as traction and wheelie control. Of course equally important is braking performance, and we have different forms of engine brake control to stop the rear wheel locking under brakes, or provide the feel on entry the rider is looking for. As well as these adjustments, we must also consider the fuel consumption as we are limited to 21L. The data recording system is essential if we wish to finish the race with the minimum amount of fuel, and use the HRC engine to its full potential”. Checking the data you gathered every week end can y please describe us Randy’s riding style aboard the RC212V and what he should improve for next season? Brian Harden: “During the 2009 season we have seen that Randy has a style we associate typically with a 250cc rider, keeping high corner speed. One of the most impor-

tant areas for laptime is the corner exit, and the area where the rider can first open the throttle. The sooner a rider can open the throttle on exit, the better the laptime and also top speed. This will be an area we concentrate on in 2010. Also, during the later part of the season, we did not cope well with the reduction in tyre performance towards the latter half of the race. This will be something we look to improve with bike setup and engine management”. Lucio Cecchinello – 125cc class former rider: “As a former GP rider I believe there are 3 essential parameters to consider checking the telemetry in order to improve the performance on track: the speed, the throttle and the engine revolution. You can easily compare your data lap by lap, session by session and, if you have got a team mate, you can compare them directly with him. The circuit graphic which appears on the monitor gives you precise instructions about the areas where it’s better to open the throttle earlier or not. Thanks to the telemetry system the Data Recording Engineer can analyze the performance of the machine but even the riding style of the rider and afterwards he can plan the bike best set up. One of the most important parameter which brings out the rider’s riding style (and consequently the engine set up) is the throttle: several riders use a striking ON/OFF riding style that means or completely open or completely closed (such as Ueda and De Angelis) whilst others have unusual features. Stoner for example was impressively fast opening the throttle before the others whilst Randy is more clever and brave in keeping the throttle open while he is at the maximum angle in the fastest areas of the different circuits...” 59

RC212V HOW WE “DRESS UP” THE RC212V

Every year, before the season’s start, the LCR Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello and his collaborators work diligently to be ready for the season’s kick off and the amount of work related to a racing team is vast. Starting from the renewal of the collaborators’ contracts to the infrastructures maintenance, from the new bike set up to the Team Presentation Media Kit and so on… Every single Team department must respect the targets and the time limit in 60

order to be on track for the first GP of the season which will take place in Qatar on the 11th of April this year again. Together with the Team Manager Lucio Cecchinello we want to deepen one of the technical and imaginative aspects of this job related to De Puniet’s RC212V … or rather the livery creation. Lucio Cecchinello: “The winter time is a

very tough period for me and the Team collaborators. Every single department fixes its own targets but the time is short as the Championship starts in April. Amongst the several works we face to prepare the Team we have to consider the graphic aspect which define the Team, the rider and the bike’s image for the incoming season”. Which procedure do you carry out to “dress up” the bike? L. Cecchinello: “After having set the contracts with our supporters, we usually start working on the bike layout fixing the logos dimensions and positioning together with a main colour which will stand out our bike image amongst the others. In 2006 we have created a special Australian livery for Stoner and that was a very successful feedback for us. Recently we have focused our work on the number plate using the fluo colour and last year we have prepared a special layout for the wheels colour. Together with the Graphic Department we study several combinations to make the bike more attractive and more visible on TV”.

Once you have settled the layout, how do you proceed? L. Cecchinello: “Every year the Manufacturers come out with new features including the fairings. With the support of our technicians we measure the complete fairing trying to adapt the layout we have planned before in every single part: the front, the back, both sides and the fuel tank. Once we have completed the graphic rendering with our supporters’ approval, we start with a new work phase tracing the bike with the adhesive tape and afterwards the fairing is ready to be painted“. Please give us some details about the GP machines fairings. L. Cecchinello: “The colouring process is long and laborious. First the carbon fairings are handmade treated and then they are painted with special water dyes of different colours. After 2 days and many work phases including the drying process, the fairings are ready and we put the stickers on. These carbon fairings are very light (one complete set weigh about 2.2kgs) and for this reason, in case of crash, they are not very strong. But if the damage is not big we can repair them even if this process is very delicate because if you ride a bike at 350km/h you get a lot of vibrations“. 61
