Editor’s Debrief Hard to believe another year has come and gone and that Spring is just around the corner. 2006 was a banner year for logisticians working tirelessly around the globe supporting our expeditionary forces and securing the blessings of freedom and liberty for millions. Each of you professional logisticians should be proud of the role you play in ensuring the “jawbone” of logistics (as Lt Gen Leo Marquez, Jr., likes to call it) can make the operational “teeth” of our military forces clamp down hard on our enemies. We’ve got another interesting collection of articles for you this quarter on a wide variety of topics.

Col Deb Shattuck

We start things off in our Perspectives column with some insights from General Norton A. Schwartz, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command, on the immense capabilities USTRANSCOM brings to the fight. We follow that with a look at how one Air Force logistician is learning to “catch the wave” of surface transportation as G3, SOUTHCOM Team Chief at Headquarters Military Surface and Distribution Command (MSDDC) at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Switching gears to another Combatant Command, we have several articles featuring logistics operations in European Command. We look at

ER: EDITOR’S DEBRIEF

Humanitarian Assistance in the theater, TURBOCADS ’06, and SOCEUR Logistics. Captain Allen Husted, who recently returned from a tour as Commander, Detachment 1, 332d Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron, Al Asad USMC Air Station, Iraq, recounts how a multi-talented Combat Logistics Support Squadron expertly executed a difficult salvage operation of a crashed C130 at his location. Our big picture “think pieces” this quarter are Brigadier General Close’s overview of Air Force Maintenance “21” (AFMx21) and Col Bob Hamm’s, “Thinking and Fighting as an Enterprise.” Finally, we’ve got an interesting article highlighting the possibilities for re-integrating heavier than air balloons back into military service in a variety of roles. I don’t want to close this debrief without taking the time to congratulate Lt Col Cheryl Allen on her promotion to Colonel. In addition to being Chief, SAF/AQ Executive Action Group, Colonel Allen is “CINC-Photo” for the ER. Many of the photos you see in the ER each quarter were located by Colonel Allen who routinely scours various photographic databases to find us just the right images to complement the articles. Finally, I’d like to make one last plug for the ER survey you’ll find on page 44. Some of you have already filled out the survey, but we would like to hear from more of you so we can get feedback on how to enhance the ER into a premier professional development publication. The survey will be available for one more month on the LOA website; if you haven’t completed it yet, please do so soon! The ER is your publication! Help us make it everything you want it to be. And, speaking of feedback, thanks to the readers who contacted us about the “oops” on our front cover last quarter. It seems we accidentally published a photo of the front end of a KC-10 instead of a KC-135 as our “teaser” photo for the articles on the 50th Anniversary flight of the KC-135. We’ve decided that to atone for our mistake, we will publish a picture of a KC-135 on the cover of the issue that celebrates the 50th birthday of the KC-10 when that occurs. KEEP ‘EM FLYING—SAFELY!!
